TELL

As I started planning what to say here, I thought, “This may be the most important editor’s note I’ve ever written.” I am writing this on March 19 from my home office, where I am quarantined with my rescue dog, Hope, as I watch – like all of you – the ever-changing updates on the coronavirus. What our community and the world is experiencing right now is unprecedented and unbelievable. And as an editor, I believe it is my responsibility to provide you with content that is timely, knowledgeable, and above all, sensitive and mindful about all that is going on with COVID-19 – and how this is affecting the place you call home. I believe that this is the highest calling of a journalist: to deliver information that matters to your audience, from a place of societal awareness, and to know when and how to pivot if needed. The week leading up to our print date involved a lot of pivoting – especially since each issue of the magazine is planned 60 to 90 days in advance. This means that when April stories were assigned in January, we (along with you) had no idea that this pandemic would unfold in the way that it did. Stories we were excited about – such as shareable group cocktails, charitable events, or luxury train travel in Europe – were all changed or cut in light of current circumstances. Even so, we decided to move forward with this issue, including spotlights on some venues that are temporarily closed or offering modified services. We did this for a few reasons: to provide an escape and some light reading for our readers during this stressful time; to show our support of the many people in the magazine currently fighting to keep their businesses afloat; and to provide some ways to help pass the time at home as we all take every precaution to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. And then, there are some instances where pivoting wasn’t an option if we were to meet our print deadline because so much was changing – and continues to change – by the day, hour and minute. You’ll see much of our usual food and beverage content, which includes places that are fully closed as of March 19. Though all restaurants are closed for dine-in eating, many have new pickup and delivery options; I wrote a special section on this to help you while helping those restaurants, starting on page 46. Should you choose to try anything spotlighted in this issue, please call or check online in advance. In light of COVID-19, our home design-focused issue comes at an interesting time – when we are all turning inward and focusing on being at home as much as possible. None of us could predict the present that we’re living, and the best I can do as an editor is help shine a light on deserving people and businesses while providing a welcome distraction and sense of reprieve during this time. I hope that within these pages you find moments of escape, entertainment and inspiration, whether you can partake in our suggestions now or save them for a not-so-rainy day. From myself and all of us here at So Scottsdale, please enjoy this modified version of our April issue, stay healthy, and be kind to yourself and others during this time. We are all in this together. ll the best, A Chelsea Young Editor-in-Chief chelsea@richmanmediagroup.com Instagram: @young_chelsea onnect with us! CALL OF DUTY

Holly Brauer, a major in the Arizona National Guard, serves soldiers and civilians through financial education

Holly Brauer’s life began on a small ranch in Utah – a llama ranch. “My parents happened on the property during a road trip through Utah in the early 1980s, and my dad got it in his mind to become a self-described llama entrepreneur,” Brauer says. “It

sounds strange, but he once traded a llama for a family vacation to Europe, and he let us bring them to school for show and tell, so we loved it.” As one would imagine, much of her young life involved caring for the up to 40 llamas on property at any given time. But

Pulse UP CLOSE a good portion of her time was also spent studying math and investing in the stock market. “My dad handled the bills, so when my parents divorced after 19 years, I saw firsthand the struggle my mom endured simply because she was not involved in the finances,” Brauer says. “As a result, I learned about investments from my grandparents, studied, and eventually bought my first stock at the age of 15.” In 2002, after graduating from high school in just three years, Brauer was accepted into Southern Utah University to study business and military science. “During college, I not only kept up with my financial education, but entered the Army ROTC program with my brother and worked for a private investigator doing alcohol stings,” Brauer says. “They are much like what you’ve likely seen on television. I would wear a wire with police supervision and though not 21, I attempted to buy alcohol at local establishments to determine if said venues were following the law.” Though she still loved investing and continued studying business, the operations inspired her to look into the FBI as a possible career path. Then, as she excelled in the ROTC – where she became the first female in her program to attend airborne school – she set her sights on the U.S. Army. After boot camp in 2004, Brauer completed ROTC training, earned her first degree, and began her first deployment in Iraq in 2008. There, she served as the executive officer, coordinating everything from her unit’s missions to their meals at just 23 years old.

Home is Where the Heart Is Returning from her deployment in 2009 was a pivotal point in Brauer’s life, and not just because she started living in Scottsdale full time after initially setting down roots here in 2007. In the midst of the recession, Brauer saw several of her fellow soldiers coming back to foreclosed homes and few job prospects. Some even lived out of their cars. Over the next few years she began using her financial prowess to help veterans with the adjustment back into civilian life, earning her master’s degree in financial coaching along the way. In 2015, she took a position with a large financial firm as a financial adviser while maintaining her role with the Arizona National Guard. “There, I found a mentor in Dustin Mac Brown, a fellow advisor,” Brauer says. “I didn’t know at the time, however, how kismet the encounter would be.” She would deploy two more times, making stops in Abu Dhabi and then in both Qatar and Afghanistan. During this time, in addition to helping veterans back home, Brauer also started helping soldiers in her unit better understand their military benefits and retirement options, proactively educating them on the best ways to financially care for themselves and their families once back home. “I returned from my third deployment in October 2019,” says Brauer, who was decorated more than a dozen times for her service, with honors including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal,

and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Once home, Brauer reconnected with Brown. By then, Brown had 16 years in the financial industry under his belt as well as his certified financial planning and accredited asset management specialist designations. He had also established his own firm, DM Brown Financial Services in Scottsdale. Consequentially, their conversation transitioned from catching up to talking about partnering up. “In February, I joined Dustin as both an adviser and leader on the executive team,” Brauer says. “Now I can squarely focus on my three core clients: females like my mom, veterans like me, and athletes.” To that point, physical health goes hand in hand with military duty – Brauer is heavily involved in the local fitness community as a seven-time marathon runner, a Ragnar competitor, and a fitness competition participant. She is even training to run the Great Wall of China Marathon and an Ironman in 2021. “I spend a lot of time in the gym, and when fellow gym regulars – many of them professional athletes – learned what I did, they began seeking advice on their transition into retirement, which I quickly learned was not unlike a soldier’s transition into civilian life,” Brauer says. “Both take people from strict routines to wholly unplanned lives full of uncertainty when it comes to money.” Today, Brauer – a member of the Sports Financial Advisors Association and Veterans Advisory Council – brings together all of her life’s experiences to ensure these groups are armed with the tools to live life on their terms, just as she does.

FANTASTIC FLORALS Angel Gould creates larger-than-life floral arrangements

Adding a touch of elegance to events is what Angel Gould does best. As the co-owner of Honeysblooms (www.honeysblooms.com), Gould specializes in creating oversized floral numbers and letters with her mother-turned-business partner. Originally from Manchester, England, Gould moved to the United States when she was 16. Fastforward to age 21, when the idea for Honeysblooms began after Gould was unable to find a giant floral arrangement for her party. When her mom surprised her with a 5-foot-tall floral “21” that she made herself, guests were in awe of the beautiful display – and immediately started placing orders. With no official training in creating floral art, Gould and her mother officially started Honeysblooms, making sustainable floral arrangements using silk flowers that can be reused on other designs. The pair has been elevating birthdays, weddings, and events ever since. “When we first began, we focused on floral numbers and have now expanded to create flower hearts, frames and letters,” Gould says. “I love the innovation of creating new and exciting installations for events around the Valley, as we get to see them begin with an idea and end with a real, tangible product.” Through a bit of trial and error, the mother-daughter duo has worked together to overcome any challenges along the way. When making the numbers, for example, they realized the statue-like formations couldn’t stand on their own, so they went back to the drawing board and got professional advice to find a solution. “We settled for large cardboard boxes that are cut and designed with a foldable flap similar to a hinge that holds the weight and keeps them standing upright,” Gould says. From there, the designs have evolved to utilize grass stands and non-floral installations. The eye-catching floral arrangements use around 700 silk flowers each, and Gould prides herself on staying on top of industry trends. “I spend hours online searching for the next trend and making sure we are the first and best product on the market,” she says. Gould, a full-time student at Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University, has been able to grow her business and find ways to innovate and enhance Honeysblooms’ designs – all while remaining on the dean’s list, a feat she ranks among her proudest accomplishments to date.

SHOWER POWER Steve Sunshine gives new meaning to spring cleaning

BY KAYLOR JONES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Entrepreneur Steve Sunshine prides himself on fixing things, especially things people don’t even know are broken. This is evidenced in his passion for collecting, restoring and selling vintage autos as the owner and founder of Steve Sunshine Classic Cars. It’s also what led him to a wholly different industry: plumbing. When Sunshine’s mother, an 82-year-old cancer survivor, became ill in 2013, the pair consulted with numerous specialists in an attempt to decipher her mysterious respiratory symptoms. When one doctor instructed them to swab her showerhead for lab testing, they discovered it was covered in mold and infected with dangerous bacteria. “I found out there are a lot of people that get sick from showerheads, something we unconditionally trust,” Sunshine says. “I bought her a new showerhead and tried to find one that could be cleaned by the consumer. There were none.” And thus Sunshine, who still collects, restores and sells cars in addition to practicing life insurance and estate planning, began his entry into plumbing. In 2014, he created Shower Clear (www.shopshowerclear.com), a removable showerhead that can be unclasped with one hand for easy cleaning or air-drying after each use. Standard showerheads, in comparison, must be manually unscrewed and flushed with bleach or vinegar in a time-consuming procedure. The product, which is fashioned from luxe metals and available in a variety of finishes, has been featured in W Magazine and Men’s Health and on the Today Show. Sunshine notes that people with compromised immune systems are susceptible to the effects of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM), an organism naturally found in water and soil. When inhaled, the bacteria can lead to NTM pulmonary disease, with possible symptoms including a low-grade fever, fatigue, a persistent cough, and weight loss. “Our skin is our largest organ. We shower every day,” Sunshine says. “People go to the gym, do yoga, and eat organic, all in order to live a long, healthy life. Shower Clear is another part of achieving one’s health goals.” While Sunshine wishes to add another facet to people’s wellness routines, his other goal hits a bit closer to home. “My mother passed away in 2018 at 87 with complications from lymphoma and what was in her showerhead. This is for her memory.”

DRESS FOR SUCCESS Scott Roelofs balances business fashion with an unexpected twist BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Scott Roelofs manages to juggle fatherhood and a career in the financial services industry – as the owner of Scottsdalebased RCG Valuation – while pulling off a unique style that not everyone can present with such ease. Most recently, Roelofs has been drawn to vintage looks. A usual staple is his 1980s denim jacket with the Kiss logo on the back from The Vintage Cowboy, a company owned by his best friend that sells trendy pieces embracing past decades. In addition to nostalgic items, quality jeans, and a great pair of sunglasses, Roelofs flexes his style by implementing trends and incorporating a single expressive piece to add flair. “Wearing sneakers with an expensive suit is like defying the society suit rules, and I’m on board for that trend,” he says. “You would be surprised at the number of people that will comment on your outfit if you give them something unexpected to talk about.” But even with a knack for following select trends, Roelofs also follows a classic rule of thumb: Dress one step above whoever he’s meeting with. “You can imagine how versatile looks can get from meeting to meeting,” he says. “I keep several outfits in my office, just in case.”

What are your favorite brands? For jeans, my go-to is 7 For All Mankind because the fit is reliable. 3sixteen also sells amazing denim, and the quality and style reflect my personality. What is your must-have item? Great sunglasses because this is Arizona, after all. You can tell a lot about a person by the sunglasses they wear – how on-trend someone is or if they are more minimalist. What would someone say if they looked at your closet? That I own a lot of darker colors and overall sleek looks. These looks are always true to my personal style and definitely keep my closet full.

Pulse HER STYLE

FASHIONABLE FORM Hailey Hyde makes a statement in and out of the yoga studio

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

As a busy entrepreneur and owner of YogaSix in Scottsdale (with a new location opening in the fall), Hailey Hyde dresses in effortless, glamorous and feminine cuts in and out of the studio, favoring dresses and closet staples from Veronica Beard and Alice + Olivia thanks to the fit and quality. “Veronica Beard pushes the envelope and brings my style to life while encompassing all of my wardrobe goals,” Hyde says. But no matter the outfit – from pencil skirts to yoga leggings – Hyde relies on her extensive shoe collection. For heels, her go-to is Valentino and for yoga attire, Hyde loves Linea Paolo’s vibrant wedge sneakers. “I would rather be overdressed for anything than underdressed,” she says, noting that most of her ensembles easily transition from daytime to nighttime with easy swaps like trading a workday blouse for a lacy camisole and jacket combo. Given her career in yoga, Hyde’s workday attire is casual and comfortable, consisting mainly of leggings, crop tops and wedge sneakers, yet also versatile in and out of the studio. “For meetings, I’m usually in a pencil skirt, cami, jacket and heels,” she says. “On weekends, it’s yoga clothes in the morning, a sundress for brunch, and a little black dress with stilettos – or lounging in my comfies with my fur babies – in the evening.” And one thing that’s always in style for Hyde? An hour of Zen at her studio.

What are your favorite trends? Highwaisted bottoms, whether jeans or skirts, paired with a crop top or tucked-in top. What is your must-have item? A versatile little black dress that can be dressed up or down. My current favorite is a V-neck, cinched waist cotton dress by Good American. What is your No. 1 style tip? Wear what you love, what makes you feel good, and what gives you life.

Experience Counts Dr. Andrew Wolin develops exclusive products to build fresh, vibrant skin

DISCOVER THE SECRET TO HEALTHY, YOUTHFUL SKIN

For decades, top Scottsdale plastic surgeon, Dr. Andrew Wolin, has sculpted thousands of Arizona faces, creating results that please patients and impress their families and friends. Through that vast experience, Dr. Wolin discovered that the patients with the very best outcomes were also those who started out with the healthiest skin. Dr. Wolin wondered, “is it possible to help my patients grow vibrant, youthful skin before surgery, to improve final results?” Thus began his quest to crack the code of skin renewal. Using the combination of exclusive medical-grade products for a period of time before facial plastic surgery, Dr. Wolin’s patients reduced recovery time, sped up healing and ultimately enjoyed significantly better looking results. “But these aren’t just over-thecounter, one-size-fits-all products. I custom formulate compounds for each patient’s unique needs to help invigorate and plump up their skin for a younger, youthful look, both before and after surgery,” says Dr. Wolin.

THE BIG AH-HAH MOMENT

“Then something really remarkable happened,” recalls Dr. Wolin. “We started getting visits from friends of our patients, who just wanted our skin building products.” Dr. Wolin and his staff discovered that these products worked wonders

Before

not just for surgery patients, but nearly anyone who wants fresh, younglooking skin. To make these remarkable products available to more people, Dr. Wolin set up an on-line store with his exclusive products. “But to really get the best results, I need to examine new patients first-hand, to create a skin-building program customized for their unique needs,” advises Dr. Wolin. With this personalized plan, patients can reorder these medical-grade products for fast and easy delivery right at home. You may start your own personalized skin-building program right away with a consultation appointment with Dr. Wolin by calling 480-945-8440 or visit wolinplasticsurgery.com to learn more about these innovative new products.

A TASTE OF PARIS Darlene Richert of Avery Lane

Imagine a Parisian boutique right here in Scottsdale. Avery Lane offers an enchanting shopping experience of the top brands, including Maitland Smith, Theodore Alexander, Restoration Hardware, etc. at a fraction of the retail prices. They’ll even pour the Prosecco! Specializing in luxury consignments with a focus on designer furnishings, European antiquities, and collectible art work, Avery Lane is a fine consignment showroom with very eclectic design elements. “Expect the extraordinary” is what store owner, Darlene Richert, and her staff strive to deliver. “We are fearless in pairing things in unexpected ways to make older pieces feel new again. Our revolving door of inventory challenges us to ‘design on the fly’ every day and it’s a team effort. We don’t have just one person, but lots of great talent lending their skills to making the showroom uniquely beautiful,” says Darlene. “Every day poses a different creative challenge and I love designing new vignettes to showcase exquisite pieces. But, even more so, I savor the opportunity to help people stretch their own design skills and take chances in decorating their homes.” Avery Lane just completed its third renovation in 24 months and now has close to 30,000 square feet of showroom space. People are invited to take a stroll around the showroom, seeing, touching, and inhaling the specially curated wonders. “Not only has our showroom grown, but also our philanthropy and our support for the arts, children’s programs, and cancer

survivors. The Avery Lane team is committed to giving back.” With that, Avery Lane has raised over $60,000 for Boys & Girls Clubs of Scottsdale and want to help more. Additionally, Avery Lane is involved with many charitable events and organizations around the Valley. “We’d like to collaborate with more residents who want to benefit a worthy local charity when they move, downsize, or redecorate. Our staff and customers love helping out a worthy cause.” With Avery Lane being the place to shop for unique finds and surprising discounts, it’s no surprise they’ve been named Best Consignment Store by Ranking Arizona and Faces of Phoenix by Phoenix Home & Garden for two years in a row. Darlene is a member of EO (Entrepreneurs’ Organization) and was a TED TALK Speaker. People may be surprised to know that she grew up on a horse and cattle ranch in Montana. “I’ve also performed in a lot of musical theater and cabarets, and I’m addicted to my Peloton.” Passionate for design, Darlene uses her skills to help clients create a focal point in a room with exceptional art work, truly believing art speaks to our hearts and experiences. “The piece you fall in love with that doesn’t really match anything in your home will be the one item people notice and will make a true statement about you,” Darlene says. THE ART OF PERSONAL ATTENTION Janet Brooks of Janet Brooks Design

A premier, luxury home interior designer, Janet Brooks, ASID is an award-winning Interior Designer appealing to a sophisticated clientele. For over 30 years, her interior design studio—Janet Brooks Design—has the reputation of exceeding excellence. Janet focuses on designing high-end custom homes in North Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, boutique retail, and hospitality projects. “I love residential design due to the intimate interaction I can have with my clients. This adds another layer to the process. It’s not just about creating exceptional design; it’s about effective communication with clients that results in them embracing my vision and having the confidence to take the next step,” she says. Janet holds a degree in Art History. “I could have gone a lot of directions, but early on, obtaining a position with an interior design studio in Colorado gave me a taste of the profession that immediately felt like a perfect fit.” Since 1987, she’s called Scottsdale her home. “Although being an interior designer is sometimes tedious and incredibly detail-oriented, it fits my OCD personality and the rewards are so satisfactory, it’s worth all the work,” Janet says. As the lead designer on every project, Janet provides personal service to each, distinguishing her from other Interior Designers. Drawing inspiration from her clients and the way they life their life, the architectural designs and detailing are completely unique to each home and never duplicated.

Through collaboration, Janet and her team continuously rise to new levels of creativity. “The concept of a cooperative team working together is very important. Mutual respect and a common goal between the interior designer, builder, architect, and landscape architect results in uncompromised quality and design for the client.” Although Janet Brooks Design provides CAD drawings—and sometimes 3D photo-realistic renderings of their design concepts—Janet stresses there must also be an element of trust between designer and client. “I understand it can be scary because it ends up literally ‘set in stone.’ However, if you have done your homework when selecting your interior designer (checked their previous work, reputation, references, etc.) and feel that he/ she is honestly listening to you, your chances for success are high,” she explains. When she is not designing, Janet is into outdoor sports and traveling to study historic architecture, both in the U.S. and abroad. “I had dreams early on in my design career that my son might take up the mantle in either architecture or design. However, there’s not an artistic bone in his motocross-riding, back-country skiing, rockclimbing, West Point graduate’s body!” Janet jokes. “I design every project with the thought in mind that it should be the best I’ve done yet…and maybe award-winning,” Janet says. YOU DREAM IT, WE CREATE IT Roland Martinez of Outdoor Xscapes

Outdoor Xscapes is a full builder specializing in luxury outdoor living environments. “Your front and backyard are extensions of your living spaces. Our goal is to take your indoor living environment and extend it outside. We create space where you can find tranquility and make lasting memories in the Valley of the Sun,” says owner, Roland Martinez. Passionate about building all aspects of outdoor life, Outdoor Xscapes provides both hardscape and softscape options. Design and build services include pools, landscapes, firepits, cooking areas, lighting, putting greens, ramadas, and more. A certified arborist, Roland started Outdoor Xscapes in 2009, in part, from the evolution of his tree company Tree Pros, LLC. His team has been with him since the beginning, shaping a company that practices fairness, honesty, and dependability. Outdoor Xscapes operates with the highest integrity and, as a result, receives many referrals from their happy clients. Roland leads by example, personally supervising the design process and installation to not only help his team, but also to ensure everything runs smoothly for the client. He promises only the best workmanship and honest customer service, offering high-end luxury results with a fair price. “We have made a commitment to our customers to exemplify the highest ethical standards. Nothing is final until the client is absolutely happy.”

When he’s not helping clients to realize their dream outdoor living space, Roland shares his love of the outdoors and camping with his 5 kids and one grandchild. “If I didn’t have to work, I’d spend all of my time in the mountains,” he says. Roland enjoys taking a blank slate and turning it into an outdoor livable space that a client will enjoy for years to come. “Our talent turns your dream into a reality. Really, the client is the soul of the project. We strive to illustrate your values and individuality through design, while producing a unique artistic image and functional solutions,” he says. Outdoor Xscapes takes on projects from idea and concept development to mind-blowing realization. “Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it works,” Roland explains. “The first phase is a discovery phase for both me and the client. I mix their visions with mine and present them with a design of what their yard will look like.” For Roland, all the hard work of a project is well worth seeing the ‘WOW’ factor in a client’s eyes when the outdoor space is completed. “They see the design and the mess of their torn-up yard. But once that last piece is placed and everything is cleaned up, they see their dreams realized. That’s what is so rewarding to me,” says Roland. Contact Roland Martinez of Outdoor Xscapes by calling 602.296.6255, or visit www.outdoorxscapes.com.

Local grocers AJ’s Fine Foods, Bashas’ and Food City have a designated shopping hour for those 65+ (or their caretakers) every Wednesday from 5 to 6 a.m. Other stores with modified hours include Albertson’s and Safeway (Tuesday and Thursday, 7-9 a.m.), Target (Wednesday, one hour before opening), Costco (weekdays, 8-9 a.m.), and Whole Foods (one hour before opening daily). Check details on age specifications as they differ per store.

POMO PIZZERIA

Pizza and wine night never sounded better with Pomo’s offering. Available for delivery or curbside pickup, all Pomo Pizzeria locations and Pomo Pizza are offering guests 30% off of orders that are $30 or more and the option for free delivery. This offer is only valid by ordering online or via phone directly from the restaurant (not through third-party delivery apps). Plus, you can add wine to your order, and if you buy one bottle, the second bottle is half off. The pizzeria is also encouraging guests to support local by offering a special gift card promo – if you purchase $100 in gift cards, you’ll receive $50 back to use for dine-in service at a later date. www.pomogroup.com.

THE VIG

All locations of The Vig are dishing out to-go orders of elevated American eats such as sliders and fish tacos from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and you can also enjoy free delivery through Postmates or Uber Eats. But there’s more: You’ll also get 20% off regular menu pricing for pickup orders and a $20 gift card with each $100 gift card purchase. www.thevig.us.

FELLOW OSTERIA

Located at ASU SkySong, Fellow Osteria has launched family-style menus to help you feed your crew, with both takeout and curbside to go as well as delivery via Postmates and Uber Eats. The Family First pack ($50) feeds four, while the Date Night selection ($25) is perfect for two people. Those who do takeout or curbside will get 25% off all orders from regular menu items placed over the phone by calling 480.207.1864. Mobile payments are also available to streamline the process and prioritize your health when picking up food. www.fellowosteria.com. So Scottsdale! April ‘20

OUTDOOR LIVING Ideas for sprucing up your backyard while supporting local

Winter is over and current circumstances have led us all to spend more time at home. While curating the perfect outdoor living space may not be at the top of your list right now, thinking about a future home improvement project might just give you a little mental escape – and help you support local homegrown businesses when you’re ready to take the leap to create your own backyard oasis.

BY MANDY HOLMES

Set the Scene Transform your backyard from blah to beautiful with Wall Sensations, which specializes in creating colorful, panoramic wall murals that add beauty and sophistication to any wall outside your home. Let the Games Begin AZ Board Source combines more than 25 years of carpentry experience with detailed craftsmanship to create hand-painted giant lawn games, available for purchase with a custom design (you can also rent noncustom games). Your friends and family will be entertained for hours with games like Jenga, Connect Four, and cornhole that are guaranteed to liven up any backyard shindig. www.azboardsource.com. Talkin’ Turf Since water can be costly and grass can be difficult to grow – especially in the Valley – artificial turf is a viable option to ensure your yard looks pristine year-round. AZ Turf and More offers a range of solutions that includes synthetic grass, pavers and travertine to make your home that much closer to maintenance-free. And not only does artificial grass help conserve water and lower the irrigation bill, but it serves as a beautiful backdrop for barbecues and family time. www.azturfandmore.com. Landscape 20/20 adds a touch of flair with uniquely designed patios, gardens, and flowerbeds for color, vitality and liveliness, making your yard a highly desirable place to relax and recharge. Turn up the Heat Spring temperatures can take a dip when the sun sets, but that doesn’t mean you have to head inside. Enhance the functionality and year-round usability of your backyard by adding a fire feature like a stone fireplace or fire pit from PHX Pavers & Landscaping. Both options won’t just keep you warm – they’ll serve as standout centerpieces in any entertainment space. www.phxpavers.com.

Luxury living comes in all styles – but with an emphasis on high-end, on-trend, and all things custom. From elaborate retreats to modern farmhouses, the Valley is brimming with gorgeously designed and executed estates. This jaw-dropping estate, located in the gated community of Silverleaf at DC Ranch, includes everything you could ever need – and more – across its expansive floorplan of eight bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. From rolling greenspaces and elegant fountains to parking for 12 of your prized cars, the 17-acre outdoor living space leaves nothing to be desired. The trend continues inside the Spanish-meets-Tuscan home, which features a room dedicated to wine storage with space for more than 1,000 bottles, an NBA-worthy indoor basketball court, a fully functional indoor shooting range, an exercise room, a library with built-in bookshelves and a fireplace, and a home theater. Add that to a 7,500-square-foot guest house fit for a king, lush gardens, and a heated pool and spa with a rock and waterfall feature, and you’ve got a home that truly doubles as a piece of exclusive paradise. 10696 E. At the end of a private cul-de-sac sits this stylish four-bedroom, 5 1/2-bathroom modern farmhouse estate. Throughout the space, high ceilings, an abundance of natural light, custom tile floors, and thoughtful black-and-white accents catch the eyes. A 60-inch statement fireplace marks the focal point of the living room, while expansive doors open up to the picturesque outdoor living space. In the master suite, notable features include a stone fireplace, floor-to-ceiling marble walls, and an expansive closet. Equally impressive, the gourmet kitchen has two islands with marble countertops and a tumbled white brick wall stretching from the black marble counters to the vaulted ceiling. But some of the most unforgettable memories will surely be made outdoors, where the home’s black-and-white theme segues into the design of the pool and spa, while lounge areas, a fire pit, and an outdoor kitchen offer unprecedented views of Camelback Mountain. 4715 N. The picturesque country French design of this five-bedroom, eight-bathroom home situated on 2 acres in Silverleaf resembles something straight out of a fairy tale. The grand staircase, gleaming tiles, and charming chandelier in the entryway hint at the luxury within, while arched windows let morning light stream into the main living space and adjacent wet bar. The kitchen is the epitome of gourmet, featuring Clive Christian cabinetry imported from England and zinc counters. The 2,000-square-foot office, which has reclaimed wood flooring from a French castle, is the perfect space to read a selection from the sophisticated built-in bookcases. In the inviting master suite, luxuriate in the sauna or soak in the spa-like tub, which takes centerstage in the romantic en suite. Outside, immaculate landscaping, a graceful fountain, a pool and spa, and sweeping mountain views set the scene for a day well-spent. 21297 N. 110th Way, Scottsdale, AZ 85255. 14,313 square feet. PINHOLE SURGICAL TECHNIQUE:

A revolutionary new way to achieve your best smile! BEFORE A University Study revealed that 89% of patients over 20 years old have gingival recession. Receding gums can be caused by gum disease or because of excessive brushing, certain medications, clenching or grinding, or smoking. Not only are receding gums painful and unattractive, but the actual bone underneath is being lost, leading to tooth loss. The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a revolutionary procedure that solves the problem of receding gums. PST offers natural-looking, long-lasting healthy smiles to those suffering from receded gums, giving patients a beautiful new smile in as little as an hour. Since nothing more than local anesthesia is needed, patients can return to work after their appointment. The Pinhole Surgical Technique takes the place of traditional gum grafts, with minimal discomfort or pain. In fact, recovery time is virtually nonexistent with PST. The results are more predictable, less noticeable, and will last as long as any other gum correction procedure. Stunning new smiles can be seen immediately. Dr. Erik Svans, DDS was among the first dentists to study the Pinhole Surgical Technique under its inventor, Dr. John C. Chao, DDS in 2014. Since introducing

AFTER PST to his practice, Dr. Svans has seen very predictable and reliable long-term results. There is no scalpel, incision, or stitches with PST, making it virtually painfree. This innovative procedure uses a .1 inch “pinhole” opening to reposition a patient’s receded gumline to its healthy, natural location. After repositioning the gum tissue to cover the exposed root surface, Dr. Svans strategically places collagen through the Pinhole to stabilize the tissue in place. The collagen resets the gum tissue and makes it stronger than before. Patients can return to normal eating that very night.

BEFORE

Previously, treatment for receded gumlines was very painful and required cutting donor gum tissue from the roof of a patient’s mouth. The donor tissue was then stitched to the receded site, which had also been cut or “flapped” in preparation for the graft. Recovery for this traditional surgical technique requires two to three weeks with prescription pain medicine. In contrast, PST is a kinder, gentler procedure since it only requires a repositioning of existing gum tissue over the exposed root surface. With PST, Dr. Svans can treat one to all teeth in one visit, in as little as 30 minutes. Patients are amazed with the results, instantly falling in love with their healthy, beautiful new smiles. If you’re ready to stop living with the pain and embarrassment of recessed gums, the Pinhole Surgical Technique may be right for you! Schedule a complimentary consultation by calling Dr. Erik Svans at 480.219.8760 or visit www.PinholeAZ.com.

2021 ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE ROADSTER Massive performance meets killer good looks BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: 2021 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster

For those who find joy in the unrestrained pursuit of excellence, the all-new Aston Martin Vantage Roadster will certainly raise a royal ruckus. The Vantage Roadster will join Aston Martin’s lineup alongside the Vantage Coupe, which was launched in 2018. The Roadster, which retains the low, wide stance of the coupe, features a Z-fold canvas roof that raises and lowers in under 7 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph – the fastest folding cycle of any convertible mechanism. Further acknowledging the luxury British automaker’s absolute commitment to a thrilling driving experience is the vehicle’s formidable 4.0-liter, 503-horsepower twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. It’s sourced from Mercedes-Benz’s AMG performance subsidiary but tuned with mellifluous and menacing exhaust notes specific to the revered sports car manufacturer. All that power is delivered via a quick-shifting eight-speed ZF automatic transmission). The Vantage Roadster accelerates from zero to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and is capable of a top speed of 190 mph. Flip the switches between the Sport,

Sport+, and Track chassis modes to progressively increase the overall responsiveness and performance excitement, whether on twisty roads or the racetrack. Simply put, the V-8 transforms the Vantage, making for an intense ride with keen steering, adaptive suspension, a hair-trigger throttle, and a torque-vectoring differential that has the 20-inch tires madly grabbing around hairpin turns. The beauty of the muscular yet graceful exterior is continued in the highly-customizable interior, with a parade of options for the modern, dynamic, handcrafted switchgear instrumentation and patterned leather sport seats. To further personalize the cockpit-like interior, multiple choices of luxurious wood, metal, or composite trim are available. The Vantage Roadster is priced about $15,000 more than its similar coupe sibling, but for many, the added benefit of droptop driving is worth the money. Perhaps when a vehicle possesses this level of comfort and customization, money should be no object. The 2021 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster is available for preorder now, with deliveries beginning later this year.

According to the Arizona Office of Tourism, more than 1 million Canadians visited Arizona last year, pumping $2.4 billion into the local economy. Perhaps it’s time we return the favor. Vancouver, a picturesque coastal city in western Canada with glistening ocean views, soaring mountains, lush greenery, and an electric urban vibe, is just a three-hour flight from the Valley. It also happens to be the hometown of Ryan Reynolds, Seth Rogen and Michael Buble as well as the backdrop for Fifty Shades of Grey, Deadpool, Elf, The X-Files, Riverdale and many more. The spring and summer months are especially magical given the temperate weather, the blooming rainforests and parks, and the thousands of migrating whales popping up from the water to say hello. The only challenge is deciding what to see and do given the nearly endless options.

Where to Stay

When choosing where to rest your head at night, look no further than Fairmont. The award-winning brand boasts four properties across Vancouver, notably the Fairmont Pacific Rim and Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Fairmont Pacific Rim is located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, just a block from the waterfront. The sleek 45-story tower features 367 guest rooms and 47 suites, as well as the full-service Willow Stream Spa, a bicycle concierge, and a collection of vintage toys, including whimsical yo-yos and kaleidoscopes. Its eclectic array of culinary options include Raw Bar, the first 100% Ocean Wise sushi bar in Vancouver, and Botanist, a fine dining hot spot with a cocktail lab that celebrates the bounty of the Pacific Northwest. The historic Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is similarly impressive, especially after its recent $75 million, five-year renovation was completed last year. Often called the “Castle in the City,” the hotel is considered one of the region’s most iconic architectural landmarks. The renovation preserved the 81-year-old hotel’s historic grandeur while providing luxurious updates to the lobby, the dining areas and all of the rooms, including the newly renovated Fairmont Gold rooms and Specialty Heritage suites, part of the brand’s exclusive “hotel within a hotel” experience, which offers elevated amenities, a private concierge, an exclusive lounge and more.

What to Do Both hotels are ideally situated, ranging from steps to just a few miles from the city’s biggest attractions, including whale watching, Granville Island, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Queen Elizabeth Park, Chinatown, Kitsilano Beach, the Vancouver Art Gallery, BC

Place stadium, the Stanley Park Seawall, the Vancouver Aquarium, Gastown, Science World, the Museum of Anthropology, and Grouse Mountain. If you’re traveling between now and fall, definitely opt for a whale watching tour. March through October is prime season for orcas, humpbacks, porpoises, dolphins and sea lions. Wild Whales Vancouver offers public and private tours in open-air vessels, semi-covered vessels and zodiac boats. Tours range from three to six hours with departures in the morning and afternoon. They also guarantee a whale sighting, or each guest may take part in another tour for free. Other outdoor adventures abound, especially at Grouse Mountain. During the spring and summer months, the popular peak – just 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver – springs to life with hiking, lumberjack shows, bird demonstrations, mountain disc golf, grizzly bear and wolf viewing, free movies, zip line adventures, tandem paragliding, and truly distinctive culinary experiences in the SkyDeck, The Observatory, and Altitudes Bistro. There are two ways to get to the top: an epic tram ride and Grouse Grind, a 1.8-mile trail up the face of the mountain. If you opt for the climb that’s been nicknamed “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster,” you’ve been warned. Granville Island is another best bet. A short ferry ride from downtown, the region is home to over 300 independent businesses ranging from cheesemongers to glass blowers. Explore on your own or take a hosted food tour at Granville Island Public Market, an indoor oasis featuring 50 premier food purveyors. You’ll likely rub elbows with the area’s top chefs as they shop through the epicurean wonderland of fresh produce, seafood and confections.

What to Eat Among the area’s acclaimed chefs are Hector Laguna, David Hawksworth, and Ian McHale. Each chef’s handiwork is worth a closer look (and taste) at their Vancouver eateries – Laguna is the mad-scientist of food behind the lauded Botanist; Hawksworth heads Vancouver’s elegant Forbes Four-Star Hawksworth Restaurant, serving contemporary Pacific Northwest fare; and McHale helms Wildebeest, where he dishes up Canadian country-style cooking at its finest. There’s so much good food in the area, in fact, that you may want to book a food tour. The original Vancouver Food Tour, a favorite of locals and visitors alike, offers 10 different touring options, including a progressive dinner through the historic (and historically delicious) Gastown district, an urban brewery experience, and even a vegan tour. Finally, no visit to Vancouver would be complete without a sip or two of local wine. Fraser Valley, one of the province’s five Designated Viticultural Areas and less than an hour from downtown, is known for exceptional pinot gris, pinot noir and sparkling wines. Other must-try options are Seaside Pearl Farmgate Winery, which offers tastings in a chapel; Single Tree Winery, located on a 67-acre operating farm; Glass House Estate Winery, which pairs wine flights with small bites and fresh oysters; and Chaberton Estate Winery, which contains its own French-inspired bistro. VIOLET FEMME

Toca Madera’s La Morada showcases femininity in a glass by marrying strong yet delicate flavors

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Last year, West Hollywood’s Toca Madera found a chic new home in Scottsdale. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response, especially to our farm-to-glass cocktails with agave spirits,” says global director of beverage Charity Johnston. According to Johnston, among the most popular spring menu items is La Morada ($17). Spanish for “The Purple,” the vibrantly violet cocktail first debuted at the West Hollywood location in homage to women. “The original recipe showcases Yola 1971 Mezcal, which is owned and operated by three women in Oaxaca, Mexico,” Johnston says. “However, Yola is not yet available in Arizona, so the Scottsdale location’s base spirit is the similarly bright, earthy, smoky Los Vecinos del Campo Espadin, a brand with a female CEO.” To make the cocktail, this mezcal is combined in a custom bucket glass with Dolin Blanc Vermouth that’s already been mixed with butterfly pea flower. “Mixing the Dolin, known for its floral and citrus notes, with the pea flower first is key in getting the cocktail’s signature hue. Mixing with the mezcal first would turn it blue,” says Johnston, who then adds Yellow Chartreuse, a sweet French liqueur, to the glass. The final ingredient is pisco, a South American brandy known for its aroma and smooth finish. All of the elements are then stirred together in the glass along with ice and a bit of water, which work together to open up the bouquet in the glass and extenuate each flavor profile. Finally, it is garnished with tiny edible viola flowers that come in a variety of colors. Floral, delicate, sweet, strong, seductive and spirited, it captures the essence of being all things female today. Toca Madera, 4736 N. Goldwater Blvd., Scottsdale; 480.930.4357; www.tocamadera.com.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Rebecca Tillman of The Phoenician

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Rebecca Tillman is executive sous chef at The Phoenician, where she specializes in developing menus using farm-focused fare for all of the property’s award-winning venues.

Tell us about your first job, as it will make longtime residents smile. I was an ice cream scooper at Swensen’s, a one-time restaurant icon known for its bubble gum ice cream, among other flavors. There, I learned to make homemade ice cream, a skill my kids appreciate today. How did you get your more formal start in the kitchen? After graduating from Northern Arizona University in 2001, I enrolled in a culinary program at The Art Institute of Phoenix and soon after started working at Arizona Biltmore. There, I met then-chef de cuisine Rick Boyer. He became my mentor and frequent colleague. How so? After the Biltmore, he recruited me to The Biltmore Company (no relation), a grand estate with extensive fine dining culinary operations in Asheville, North Carolina, and then to Destination Kohler, a five-star property in Wisconsin. He also recruited me to The Phoenician in 2017, where he is currently executive chef. I also served as executive chef of Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort from 2014 to 2017 – the only female executive chef at an Arizona resort at the time. Speaking of that, how has The Phoenician embraced female culinary leadership? In addition to me, the resort’s food and beverage director, sommelier, lead mixologist, executive banquet chef, and pastry sous chef are all female, as is Mowry & Cotton’s chef de cuisine. In fact, over the past several months, we’ve hosted monthly wine and cocktail dinners called Fierce Females at The Phoenician collectively developed by our team of women. What are three things we may be surprised to know about you? I was born in Ireland, I hate mayonnaise, and I paint – mostly watercolors – in my spare time. The Phoenician, 6000 E. TAKE A DIP

Start your meal out right with these sumptuous spreads

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Dip Trio

Kovo Modern Mediterranean This trifecta pays homage to the Middle East and Mediterranean by offering its take on hummus, feta cheese and tzatziki. The hummus is a creamy blend of chickpeas, garlic, fresh citrus and tahini, and guests have the option of keeping it traditional or opting for either a roasted red pepper or smoked chipotle variation. The dip is a combination of salty, savory and spicy, with whipped feta cheese, olive oil, jalapenos and chipotle peppers. Refreshing tzatziki, a traditional Greek yogurt-based dip of garlic, cucumber and dill, finishes the trio. Warm pita triangles and fresh vegetables accompany the dish for dipping. $17. www.kovomedi.com.

New School Spinach Dip

Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar A delicious take on the American classic, this dip starts with sharp, aged-to-perfection Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and cooked spinach. For both texture and that signature earthy, nutty flavor, tender artichoke hearts are then added before being baked until the ingredients are sizzling. The dip is topped with an additional helping of fresh Parmigiano-Reggiano and served with tortilla chips that have a healthy drizzle of sour cream as well as mild pico de gallo and Fresno peppers for an extra kick. $12. www.twistedgrove.com.

Kelly’s Three Cheese Jalapeno Dip

Once relegated to sports bars and big-box chain restaurants, dips have come into their own on appetizer and small bites menus across the Valley. Now elevated and often elegantly served, these spreadables can easily be the stars of the meal. Here are some local favorites, and for now, be sure to play it safe and smart when ordering – divide and conquer when it comes to sharing dips by portioning them out on your own plate.

Kelly’s at Southbridge Equal parts spicy and rich, this ultra-decadent appetizer starts by dicing jalapeno peppers and serrano chilies before combining them with aged American sharp cheddar, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, cream cheese, and heavy cream. All of the ingredients are baked until melted and bubbly, and then the dish is topped with crispy, salty Parmesan crumbles that have been toasted in the oven. The dish is served piping hot with warm housemade potato chips. $13. www.kellysatsouthbridge.com.

Ceviche

The Canal Club This South American dish has become a popular appetizer (and sometimes main dish) in the U.S., especially when paired with chips for dipping. At The Canal Club, large chunks of chilled shrimp and cucumber are marinated in fresh pico de gallo with extra cilantro and zesty lime juice until the shrimp is layered with flavor. The dish is served chilled in a bowl and garnished with microgreens. It comes with a side of blue corn tortilla chips and fried plantain chips and is meant to transport one to Havana without leaving Scottsdale. $16. www.thecanalclubaz.com.

is produced in Chihuahua, Mexico, and known for its mild flavor and stringy texture. After being baked in a cast-iron skillet, it is topped with fire-roasted corn, black beans, and housemade pico de gallo bursting with fresh tomatoes, onions and cilantro. Before arriving at the table with tortilla chips, the skillet gets one last topper: crumbly chunks of cotija cheese for a bit of saltiness. $14. www.jwdesertridge.com.

Artichoke, Shrimp and Crab Dip Babbo Italian Eatery As decadent as it is delicious, this seafood lover’s dream starts with large chunks of fresh lump crab and shrimp. The salty, slightly sweet crab and cooked shrimp are then combined with both sharp Romano cheese and pepper jack cheese, which is a blend of buttery Monterey Jack and a combination of peppers including jalapenos, serrano peppers, and habanero peppers. Before being baked to simmering perfection, a mound of nutty artichokes is added for texture, a hint of salt, and earthy goodness. The dish is served with toasted garlic bread. $11.50. www.babboitalian.com.

Drunken Goat Cheese Fondue

Buffalo Chicken Dip

Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers Warning: This fiery update to classic Buffalo chicken wings is not for the faint of heart. It gets its kick thanks to the chicken, which has been cooked with cayenne pepper hot sauce and butter. While still hot, the chicken is shredded and combined with sharp American cheddar cheese and a copious amount of blue cheese crumbles before being baked until bubbly. It’s topped with green onions and served with cold veggies and house potato chips. Tangy, spicy, salty and savory, it is a perfect partner to Cold Beers’ long list of refreshing beers. $12.50. www.coldbeers.com.

Rusconi’s American Kitchen A marriage of several complex flavors, this dish starts with drunken goat cheese versus the more standard cheddar, Swiss or Gruyere cheeses found in most fondues. Originally developed on the Spanish coast, this cheese is cured for several days in red wine, making it very smooth and even a bit fruity without being cloyingly sweet. To give it texture and complement this unique flavor, roasted garlic and caramelized onions are added before it is baked and presented with artisan bread for dipping. $10. www.rusconiskitchen.com.

The Paleo Dip

Sapiens Paleo Kitchen The menu at Sapiens features dishes that are all free from dairy, soy, grain, corn and beans. It further notes that items are also free of processed sugars and trans fats. As a result, one would think it impossible to make a palatable dip, right? Think again. This unique option is made by processing seasonal vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices together – with the vegetables being nearly pureed to give the dip its velvety texture. Light yet filling, it is packed with flavor you want and the critical phytonutrients you need. $9. www.sapienskitchen.com.

unprecedented level of healthcare. The future of wellness has come to Arizona, with the goal of preventing acute and chronic diseases one person, one neighborhood, and one community at a time. The Prevene™ difference is evident from the moment you step through the door; its setting is casual, not clinical. You will find no sick patients, no prescription medication influences, only a holistic approach focusing on your lifestyle and your health. Best of all, you don’t have to fork over the extra cash to get the cutting-edge preventive care you deserve – it’s billed to your insurance just like an annual physical or a regular office visit would be. The healthcare paradigm is shifting its focus from treatment to prevention, and Prevene™ is at the forefront. “It’s time for preventive healthcare to become its own specialty, set apart from the primary care offices that are already overburdened with sick patients,” says Dr. Rotella. In a blind review, with an overall 4.95 star rating, the majority of patients stated they preferred a separate location from the busy, crowded doctor’s office – a testament to the need for programs such as Prevene Wellbeing®. Experience for yourself the amazing feeling of understanding your entire body as it relates to the future of your health with Prevene™. Your insurance plan covers your preventive healthcare, so why not take advantage of the benefits and biohack your way to a better you? Your body – and your mind – will thank you. Prevene™ utilizes advanced 3D body scanning technology which provides you with a comprehensive look at your physical makeup, allowing you to see your body in a whole new light. workout plans and direct support, it’s a tool for ongoing success right at your fingertips. “We are seeing an overall greater need in prevention, and studies show that there is not enough time for it to be done in an overcrowded traditional treatment-based clinic,” states Joseph A. Rotella MD, DC, creator of the Prevene Wellbeing® program. Today’s patients are eager for a personalized focus on wellness, early detection, health screenings, mental health, nutrition, and an appropriate diet and exercise program for their lifestyle. ARIGATO, CHEF! Famed Japanese eatery Nobu opens in Scottsdale

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY MICHAEL BAXTER

The story behind Nobu sounds more like a Hollywood movie than a once-small business success story. It even features an Academy Award winner with co-owner Robert De Niro. The story starts in Japan in the mid1950s when, at just 7 years old, Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa lost his father to a car crash. Raised from then on by a single mother, he helped his family by working in a restaurant in his early teens, eventually serving as a live-in apprentice for a local sushi bar. His natural talent in the kitchen soon led him to Peru in 1973, where he opened his first restaurant. There, he found one problem: The restaurant was meant to focus on Japanese cuisine, but Peru did not have all the ingredients he required. His improvisation, using a combination of Japanese and Peruvian ingredients, quickly earned him acclaim. So much so, he eventually moved to the U.S. in the 1970s to set out on his own version of the American dream. After working in restaurants in Alaska and California, Matsuhisa opened his first namesake restaurant, Matsuhisa, in Los Angeles in 1987. A hot spot for the culinary and

Hollywood elite alike, the venue found a big fan in De Niro, who eventually approached Matsuhisa about opening a PeruvianJapanese concept in New York City. The two, along with partners, opened Nobu in New York’s Tribeca district in 1994. The James Beard Foundation quickly took notice, honoring Nobu as its Best New Restaurant soon after. The restaurant has grown from that one location to 42 worldwide, including locations in London, Barcelona, Dubai, Ibiza, and Tokyo. The brand expanded further with the launch of Nobu Hotel at Caesars Palace in 2013 and quickly expanded to 10 locations as of 2019. And then there is the brand’s latest move. Earlier this year, Nobu opened in Scottsdale, marking its first location in Arizona. At over 10,600 square feet, the palatial space is purposefully minimalist and ethereal in its design with an open, airy layout and a dramatic skylight in the main dining room. There is a traditional bar with a lounge area as well as a sushi bar and ample seating for more than 230 guests between the bars, the main dining room, and the patio. The menu is divided into several sections, notably with snacks, classic items, hot and cold options, a tasting menu, sushi, sashimi, and a section with Nobu’s take on tacos. Of particular note is the menu’s black cod with miso ($36), a longtime signature offering. There is also a Japanese A5 wagyu section, which features four types of the coveted beef, all for $35 per ounce. Happy hour is held daily in the bar and lounge from 5 to 6 p.m., offering discounts on sake, wine, beer, cocktails, sushi, and select hot and cold small bites. Nobu is open for dinner from 5:30 to 11 p.m. daily. The bar and lounge area are open from 5 to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. Nobu, 7014 E.
