Parisian
Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon
J
o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color
line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

Summertime and the livin’ is … hot. But I didn’t have to tell you that, did I? In the creative world, many times our struggles become our inspiration. As such, the heat served as our inspiration for a few gems this month: cool bottles for hot days (page 76), island living right in your own backyard (page 50), and decor inspired by the Northeastern seaside (page 58). Other cool things to do in town this month? Take a tour, either one worthy of some Instagram shots (page 41) or in an all-new vehicle perfect for getting around your ’hood (page 69). Go a step further and take your taste buds on a tour of what’s growing in the garden, at least in chefs’ gardens (page 52). If an August escape is more your style, we can’t blame you. Find your own Arizona foodie adventure with our list of menus worth the miles (page 80). Plus, discover a cool reprieve and alpine adventure in Telluride, Colorado (page 72) – an escape I took myself and one that’s so stunning, it’s difficult to capture in words. The charming town is characterized by unbelievable scenery, fabulous food and festivals, and one-of-a-kind experiences. Along the lines of one of a kind, I think our cover gal Kristina Guerrero is just that. Guerrero, who hosts the television show The List, overcame a challenging childhood, rising through the ranks to land among the Hollywood stars before eventually calling the Valley home. Her hard work, tenacity and kindhearted nature have taken her far, and it’s people like her who are an honor to feature. Read about her journey to the spotlight and her latest projects, starting on page 36. As always, thanks for reading. Stay cool, Scottsdale. ARTFUL ENTREPRENEURSHIP A creative at heart, Gianna Nicole leads a multifaceted company that empowers others
A person with an entrepreneurial spirit has a knack for inspiring others. They are fueled by opportunities, collaboration and innovation. They are creators uninhibited by risk and they are natural-born leaders. They don’t just say, they do. Gianna Nicole has embodied this spirit since she was young.
“When I was in fifth grade, I wrote my first bucket list ever. The No. 1 thing it says on there is ‘travel the world as a photographer.’ It’s pretty spectacular to see that I had claimed this life for myself as a child,” Nicole reflects. Before she became the founder and CEO of Gianna Nicole

Pulse UP CLOSE Media (www.giannanicolemedia.com) – a boutique media house that offers digital marketing and production services to folks in the fashion, beauty and entertainment industries – she was a young girl with many creative outlets. Sketching, painting and taking pictures with her old Polaroid camera were some of Nicole’s go-to hobbies. As she got older, she dabbled in other mediums of artistic expression. While enrolled in classes at Paradise Valley Community College and Arizona State University, Nicole regularly picked the brains of her English professors or spent time in the schools’ art halls. She found refuge in things like creative writing and digital marketing, but mostly photography. “Finding creative ways to express myself has always been a need in my life,” she says. Beyond her professional pursuits, Nicole is a full-time mom. As soon as her three children came into the picture, Nicole knew what kind of parent they deserved – the kind that empowers them to reach for their goals and create real change. Leading by example for her children, Nicole pursued her goals and launched her own business in 2014. “I had worked very closely with many leaders in the entertainment and beauty industries over the years,” she says. “When I saw an opportunity to have my own voice and create my own lane in this crazy world, I jumped on it.” Her own lane, Gianna Nicole Media, is headquartered in Scottsdale’s Kierland Commons. Along with her team of multimedia strategists, Nicole offers a gamut of branding services to clients, namely young fashion models. From fashion styling on photo shoots to creative editing to curating electronic press kits, this creative entrepreneur and mom keeps a busy pace juggling her two worlds of career and kids. “If you want to build your brand into a household name and still have dinner on the table by 6 p.m., you just have to prioritize your life to make it happen,” says Nicole, noting that after the family nighttime routine, it’s back to work for her around 8 p.m. “Long nights turn into long weeks and even longer months, but in the same breath, I can easily say it’s the most rewarding part of my work, too. We’re all capable of living whatever life we claim; it’s all [in your] mindset.” Photography has always been Nicole’s favored creative medium. Throughout the years, she has honed this craft and become a sought-after children’s fashion photographer in search of the world’s next Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. With this aspect of her business, she travels a lot. “I’m like a little mama duck, collecting new kids everywhere I go,” she says. As part of this business, Nicole hosts Fashion Passport (www. fashionpassort.org), an annual retreat for children and teens in the modeling and entertainment industries and their families. The oneof-a-kind trip offers educational workshops with top photographers, fashion designers and modeling instructors. Fashion Passport – taking place on Italy’s Amalfi Coast in 2019 – is meant to teach young people to pursue their goals with a limitless mindset. Nicole’s own limitless mindset, the one she’s had since she

was a little girl, has enabled her to break down doors and run her own empire while raising three kids. And, she’s only 30 years old. “I’ve found the farther up the ladder I move, the more common resistance is to young, thriving women in business,” Nicole says. “However, I revel in the challenge of rewriting people’s perceptions and never forget to have a sense of humor about things. After all, everyone has the right to be wrong!” Nicole is the first to note that her industry is not all glamour, and that being an entrepreneur means putting in more hours than most, which is a part of the job rarely talked about. “I truly believe you’re either born with the soul of an entrepreneur, or you’re not. It’s easy to get excited by all the perks of being a business owner, like creating your own schedule, but you don’t always see the 24/7 grind they’re living to make that freedom possible.” Gianna Nicole Media and Fashion Passport are continuing to evolve. In fact, a New York office is already in the works, though Scottsdale will always be Nicole and her business’ home. “Although I travel a lot, nowhere else is home other than Arizona,” she says.
A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, stylist and color expert at Sachi Studios
Rodney Gentry is one of those people whose Midwestern charm and enthusiasm can’t help but rub off on you. And in his line of work, that’s certainly a plus. Gentry is possibly the Valley’s most adored hair stylist. His clients (some of them might better be described as fans) will happily travel across state lines in order to have him handle their tresses. Many of them simply trust nobody else with their hair. Having operated his own salon in Chicago before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry brings big city expertise to the Valley, which he combines with his own unique passion for styling and coloring at Sachi Studios. Each client enjoys a truly personalized service. Gentry considers the condition and history of the hair before recommending a treatment program, style and (if desired) color. His focus is on nurturing hair back to full health at the same time as providing stunning styles and fabulous colors. “It’s my goal to make each client feel truly beautiful – and to leave them with a style that they can easily recreate themselves every day,” he says. Part of this comes down to the right products. Gentry only uses the very
best brands available, not skimping when it comes to choosing those products that will bring about dramatic improvements in the hair’s condition. This applies to everything, from daily shampoos to the color treatments that he uses, which are enzyme-based rather than peroxide-based. This means they enhance the condition of the hair as well as give it a wonderfully vibrant color. Color is Gentry’s true passion. From full hair makeovers to the subtlest of highlights or lowlights, he works with his clients to select the colors that are right for their skin tone, the shape of their face and even their preferred color of clothing. “Every single person is unique in their coloring, which is why personalized consultation is so important,” he explains. “You really have to care about each and every client in order to bring out the best in their hair. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to beautiful hair!” Gentry also believes that it is important to stay abreast of trends. From the Oscars to the latest catwalk shows, he’s up to speed with seasonal styles and colors in order to enable each of his clients to achieve a touch of Hollywood
glamour. From super straight blonde locks to superbly highlighted plaits with the tiniest of accessories woven in, Gentry is available to provide advice and guidance on how those in the Valley can look their very best this summer, both color-wise and style-wise. If you haven’t yet checked out Sachi Studios then you’re not giving your hair the love it deserves!
Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at StainD in Sachi Studios, Suite 23-A1 in Scottsdale, AZ. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for further information.

BRAIN FOOD
Children’s book author Candice Imwalle illustrates the importance of healthy eating
BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
With so many children’s books on the market that teach life lessons, Candice Imwalle was surprised to find that none tackled healthy eating. As a medical sales professional, she regularly encounters patients who suffer from illnesses caused by a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. In effort to help future generations from making poor health decisions, as well as to fill a void in children’s literature, she wrote Sir Morgan and the Kingdom of Horrible Food. The book introduces young readers to the Kingdom of Terrible Food, a place where residents have zero consequences for eating high-fat, high-sugar and high-calorie foods. This changes when a witch casts a spell on the townspeople so that they finally experience the negative effects of their unhealthy choices. Her educational book, full of whimsy and colorful characters – Princess Isabella was named by Imwalle’s daughter Isabella – helps ignite a dialogue between parents and children about the importance of good-foryou foods. Since publishing, Imwalle has shared her book in classrooms across the Valley. Her fictional, yet not-sofar-fetched story resonated with young listeners, many of whom even called out their parents’ unhealthy habits in the Q&A portion. “The message motivated them to tell their parents to be healthier,” Imwalle says. “It was very inspiring.” Imwalle’s children, Cameron (14) and Isabella (almost 11), ensured that the book’s vocabulary was comprehensive for a young audience. In addition to being co-authors, they are also advocates for health. “It’s quite humorous to be in a supermarket with them. They both police each other and even debate over which one eats healthier,” she laughs. With back-to-school season on the horizon, Imwalle reminds parents to remain strong, regardless of the pushback they may receive, when helping their children thrive. Food is a huge factor in that equation. “You know what’s best for your children. Help them make good food choices, but give them a little wiggle room to splurge on occasion. With your guidance, they will grow to be happy, healthy adults.” Imwalle is currently working on a second children’s book (along with her kids) and a dating guide for women over 40. To learn more about Imwalle and her books, visit www.candiceimwalle.com.

FLOURISHING FOUNDATIONS Ken Peterson is in the business of building dream homes
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
From a young age, Ken Peterson was immersed in the family real estate and construction business where he learned the importance of hard work and dedication. So it’s no surprise the motivated Brophy College Preperatory and Arizona State University alum entered the homebuilding industry right after college and now serves as the vice president of sales and marketing for Shea Homes, a family-owned homebuilding company that has Valley roots dating back to 1989. Inspired by his father, Peterson learned the ins and outs of the real estate industry along with the values of tenacity, dedication, honesty and respect. Peterson joined the Shea Homes family 24 years ago and has seen the company grow tremendously, building more than 26,000 homes across the Valley. While leading sales team initiatives to drive a high level of customer service, Peterson has been instrumental in launching the new Shea Signature by Shea Homes luxury brand. “I can’t imagine doing anything else,” Peterson says. “I get to work with amazing people, participate in the construction of great communities, and help our talented team achieve remarkable things for our customers and our community.” Seeing the excitement on his customers’ faces when they move into their new Shea Home is Peterson’s favorite part of the business, and leading his team through one of the toughest downturns in the real estate industry’s history has been his most significant career moment. But Peterson’s focus is on the future of Shea Homes – and it is exhilarating. “We’re getting ready to open the new Azure, Paradise Valley luxury community, located on the most coveted piece of land in town,” Peterson says. “Part of the Ritz-Carlton Paradise Valley’s master plan community, Azure is a collection of 66 homes offering true resort-style living.” In addition to building these dream homes, this fall Shea Homes will launch a state-of-the-art Shea Homes Design Studio, a curated selection of interior finishes with Peterson at the helm. “After two years of extensive research, we’re looking forward to taking this innovative approach of assisting our customers,” says Peterson, who, when he’s not leading the team at work, is an avid photographer and budding cyclist.

Taking clothing cues from the experts defines Austin Bates’ sophisticated style

In a world where first impressions are imperative, fashion comes into play as well as professionalism – and Austin Bates has this down to a style science. The self-admitted “Nike snob” appreciates a professional, clean and classic look for workdays but never misses the opportunity to stock up on California beach shop T-shirts during summertime family vacations. Between running a team of mortgage professionals in the office and taking on husband and daddy duties at home, Bates’ style fluctuates between a professionally tailored wardrobe on weekdays and comfortable athleisure wear on the weekends. A navy custom-tailored suit serves as Bates’ go-to uniform, and he experiments with colored shoe laces and accent stitching when it comes to his career attire. In curating his overall style, Bates swears by hiring an expert (he works with Brothers Tailors) and admires George Clooney for his consistently classy look regardless of the occasion. “My career growth has been mirrored by my style; the better I’ve done professionally, the more professional my style has gotten and the more I’ve come to appreciate custom clothes,” Bates says. “I’m in dress clothes 75 to 80 percent of the time.”
What is your most prized possession? A Breitling watch that I worked very hard to get. It reminds me to stay focused and set goals. What is your favorite store? Brothers Tailors, where Peter Zistas does all of my professional attire. He knows me, my style, and my preferences, and he’s always dressed better than me so I’ll take his advice. How do you transition from work to nighttime? During the week, work rolls into the evening with events, so I might not get the chance to transition until late. When I do, it’s a sprint to get the work attire off and get lounging clothes on to spend time with my wife and kids.

Pulse HER STYLE
ELEGANT ACCENTS With a fondness for details, Taylor Schultz is perfectly polished
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Besides her professional appearance and friendly smile, Taylor Schultz has mastered the art of accessorizing to create her signature minimal-chic style. As the marketing and brand development director for Babbo Italian Eatery, Schultz depends on wardrobe staples from Zara and Topshop to serve as a canvas for her love of accessories. “It can be easy to focus on the clothing and forget about the accessories, but they’re important to not overlook,” Schultz says. “The right jewelry can pull a look together and make a T-shirt and jeans into a great outfit.” With style icons like Olivia Palermo and Blake Lively, it’s no wonder Schultz stays up to date on current accessory trends like sporting chunky heels and rocking a bold lip. Plus, her fashionable love affair with Nordstrom functions as a one-stop-shop with brands like Madewell for jeans and Steve Madden for shoes. “Nordstrom carries all the brands I love, and I can get accessories, makeup and shoes in one place,” she says. Whether she’s running around town between restaurants or enjoying newlywed life on date nights, Schultz notes, “I make an effort to pick outfits I know will work with my plans for the day. Feeling good about clothes is as important as looking good.”
What is your most prized possession? My Jimmy Choo shoes. They are elegant, and, as a bonus, they’re easily the most comfortable heels I own. I even wore them for my wedding. What are your favorite trends? I’m loving block heels. They’re flattering, easy to match with any outfit, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. I love to pair them with a fun and flirty summer dress. How does your career influence your style? I’m in a professional setting for work, and I’m still young so I want to look fresh and fun while also representing the restaurant brand accordingly.

COUNTS!
Dr. Andrew Wolin brings over 30 years of experience in Plastic Surgery as well as ENT/Facial Plastic Surgery
Pay attention to your eyes; they are the portal to your soul!
So you get up in the morning, amble to the mirror and stare in disbelief. “ My eyes used to be my best feature…why are they sunken, hollow and sad?” It’s a fact that as you age, the support of your face and eyes slowly vaporizes, leaving you a mere shadow of your former self. Is there a simple way, without complicated surgery, that you can PERMANENTLY improve your eyes, your brows, your temples and your forehead. Dr Andrew Wolin, an Aesthetic Plastic surgeon double boarded in Plastic Surgery and ENT/Facial plastic surgery practicing in Scottsdale says: “ABSOLUTELY YES!” PRE OP
POST OP
By borrowing fat from areas of your lower body, he has developed a way of transferring that fat, in a simple office procedure, to the areas around the brow, temples, and lower lids to fill in the hollows caused by the natural aging process. Nearly every child dreams of the kind of job they will have when they are an adult. For Kristina Guerrero, her dreams were big, and she overcame odds that were perhaps stacked against her during childhood. Ultimately, her success was written in the stars in the most literal sense. Guerrero is the host on pop culture and entertainment show The List that films here in the Valley, airs on KNXV Channel 15 in Arizona, and is syndicated in nearly 50 markets in the U.S. Guerrero’s career has taken her several places, but she grew up in a small farming town in the state of Washington as one of five children. Her hometown was rife with poverty and not much in the way of opportunities – being on welfare and food stamps was just a part of life. “I desperately wanted something better for my life,” Guerrero says. “My mom was a single mom, and my father was an alcoholic and in jail most of my life. We struggled a lot.” When she was five years old, Guerrero knew she was destined for something different than most kids. “While other kids were watching cartoons, I was watching Entertainment Tonight, and Mary Hart was my hero,” she says. “Early on, there was a God-given desire to succeed and to be driven. I felt that Hollywood was calling my name and that was where I was meant to be. My mom once gave me this nugget of encouragement – that I could be anything that I wanted. I took that nugget and I just went for it.” Watching her mom single-handedly raise five kids while taking public assistance had a profound impact. “It gave me an incredible work ethic. If I didn’t want to live that kind of life, I knew I was going to have to work really hard to get out of it. It also showed me the kind of strength a woman can have in order to survive, protect her family, and take care of herself.” Armed with undaunting tenacity, when Guerrero moved to Hollywood to pursue her dream, she felt she had nothing to lose. She earned an academic scholarship and attended the University of Southern California. Even in college, Guerrero was already working tirelessly toward her goal. “As soon as I got to USC, I knew in order to be great in front of the camera, I had to be great behind the camera,” Guerrero says. During college, she interned and paid close attention as she did everything from fetching coffee to handling scripts, learning everything she possibly could behind the scenes. She soon started writing and producing as well as interviewing celebrities. “Immediately after college, I had a wealth of knowledge and this
38

tenacity to get my foot in the door and not take ‘no’ for an answer.” One big opportunity that Guerrero found on her own accord was as co-host of The Rub, a multicultural show on CTV that began in 2004 and ran for a few years. “With that, I was able to get an agent who sent me to Access Hollywood,” says Guerrero, who was only a year out of college. “It was all divinely intended for me. It’s not supposed to happen that quickly and everything just started falling into place.” After that, she moved to San Antonio, Texas, to host a lifestyle morning show. It was there that she truly honed her craft. “I learned how to hold a show and learned to drive a show. I did that for three years with the intention of always returning to Hollywood because I wanted to be on red carpets.” Upon that return, she landed at Inside Edition where she remained for almost a year.
“E! called and by the time I was 27, I was a correspondent for E! News, which was the dream,” explains Guerrero, who was the first Latina host for the show, spending six years on it interviewing major stars, including Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock. She singles out George Clooney as her favorite celebrity interview so far because he treated her like an old friend, put her at complete ease, and spoke authentically. “He made me feel like I was the only person that mattered in that moment,” Guerrero says. In 2014, while at E!, Guerrero was nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Entertainment News Program category.
ARIZONA BOUND Behind the glitz and glamour, living in Los Angeles was a grind, although Guerrero didn’t realize it immediately. “I didn’t know it
until I had a baby. When you live in Los Angeles, it’s a lifestyle,” says Guerrero, noting the hectic pace of LA life. A few years ago, her agent called with the opportunity at The List in Phoenix, and Guerrero saw it as a way to take a proverbial fresh breath away from the craziness that can be La La Land. Although Guerrero initially thought of splitting time between Los Angeles and Phoenix, she and her husband – writer and producer Gibby Cevallos – decided they wanted to live in the Valley along with their young son. “When my agent first sent me to Phoenix, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Guerrero says. “I packed up my family, moved to [the Valley], and absolutely fell in love! We just found there is no reason to go back to LA, unless absolutely necessary. “I love the community element, and I love that people sit on their front porches and wave to their neighbors,” Guerrero continues. “I love to see kids on their bikes, and we can walk to our neighbor’s house and watch the kids play in their front yard. I also love that there is parking at the grocery store,” she adds with a laugh. Adding to her already impressive repertoire, Guerrero has also worked as a producer on two of Eva Longoria’s short ESPN documentaries, including ¡Go Sebastien Go!, which had its premiere at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. “These were not necessarily about sports, but things that culturally happened around sports that really made a difference,” Guerrero says. “I connected with Eva because she and my husband have been friends for many years, and my husband is also a writer and producer. She called him and said, ‘There’s this amazing story, and I would love for you to come and produce on it.’ I looked at him and said, ‘I want to produce on it.’ A little bit of nepotism goes a long way, I guess.” Most recently, Guerrero has co-created and co-written, along with Cevallos, her first TV pilot script for Adulting, which is loosely based on Guerrero’s life with her girlfriends and their chaotic world. “The goal of my career has certainly been hosting, and it’s what I love to do,” Guerrero says. “One of the other things I want to do is be able to write and produce TV shows.” Currently, the script is being shopped around, and she is hopeful to make that pilot made one day. “What I’ve found is that life is unpredictable, and while I might have an idea of what I want for my future, the divine plan for me is usually way cooler,” Guerrero says. The new season of The List begins Sept. 10 at its new 3 p.m. time slot. Learn more about Guerrero and her career at www.iamkristinaguerrero.com.

PREPLESS VENEERS
Transforming Patient’s Smiles BEFORE
AFTER Truly prepless veneers, with zero anesthetic used.
The conventional process of applying dental veneers generally involves shaving away a significant portion of the tooth. In many cases, temporary dental veneers must be worn while the permanent dental veneers are manufactured in a lab. Because a prepless porcelain veneer is as thin as a contact lens, the porcelain veneer application process requires little to no tooth reduction. The veneers are bonded to your teeth and you are left with the shape and color you’ve always wanted. The material is incredibly durable, and we stand behind them with a 5 year guarantee against breakage. The process is less invasive than the traditional porcelain veneer process. Most patients find that they immediately enjoy their new smiles without any post-procedure discomfort or sensitivity. You will be amazed at how beautiful, natural and authentic dental veneers look.

Fitz’s Supper Club celebrates 10 years of giving back through Larry Fitzgerald’s First Down Fund
He’s usually on the receiving end, but this time Larry Fitzgerald is serving up something special to his guests at his annual Fitz’s Supper Club. To celebrate a decade of community service, hometown hero and Arizona Cardinals superstar Larry Fitzgerald is trading his football cleats for an apron as he hosts his popular fundraiser, Fitz’s Supper Club 2018, Celebrities at YOUR Service, First and Ten. In addition to commemorating 10 years of giving from the Larry Fitzgerald First Down fund, guests will have the opportunity to mingle with notable personalities and athletes on the red carpet before sitting down to enjoy a five-star dinner served by Fitzgerald’s celebrity friends at Dominick’s Steakhouse at Scottsdale Quarter. Among the high-energy vibe of an upscale steakhouse, diners will enjoy an array of Fitzgerald’s favorite post-game dishes prepared by Dominick’s chef Marc Lupino. “This is huge milestone for the Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund, and we are thrilled to once again be a part of such a great event that helps so many in need,” says Jeff Mastro, co-owner of Dominick’s Steakhouse. In addition to the interactive fun provided by the celebrity waiters, there will be live performances, photo opportunities, and international celebrities at this can’t-miss social, philanthropic event. Guests are invited to bid on highly anticipated silent and live auctions while sipping cocktails and hearing about some of the unforgettable plays made through the programs on and off the field that the First Down Fund has supported. For the last decade, the Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund has helped kids and their families with significant donations of time, money and special resources through numerous associations across the country and beyond. has also made donations to refurbish a basketball court at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in Minneapolis, where Fitzgerald first played football as a child. This year, the Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund will continue the tradition of providing much-needed assistance to many worthy causes with the money raised at Fitz’s Supper Club 2018. “We have partners that have been with us since the inception of this event a decade ago, and it is so humbling to see them back again this year as we celebrate 10 years of Fitz’s Supper Club,” Fitzgerald says. “Every person that has participated in any capacity over the years is on our team playing a vital position in the sustainable change the First Down Fund has made from achievements with youth through educational programs to supporting the fight against cancer.”

BEACH VIBES
Head to six destinations to get into an island state of mind
Dreaming of sand and sea? With the heat continuing for the foreseeable future, the feeling of a breezy beach escape might be just what you need. From island-inspired eats to white sand and surfing, here are local places primed to help you feel like you’re on vacation.
BY MANDY HOLMES
South Beach Style Channeling the breezy South Beach lifestyle, Riot House (www.riothouse.com) – which recently opened in Old Town Scottsdale – is decked out in vibrant decor and fun design elements inspired by the flamingos and palm trees of South Florida. The indoor-outdoor concept allows guests to enjoy laidback games like cornhole, Connect Four, and giant Jenga while munching on tropical beach fare like mojo shrimp and citrus barbecue chicken flatbread. Coconut Craze Originally from the Hawaiian island of Maui, Coconut’s Fish Cafe (www.coconutsaz.com) serves up the famous fish tacos they’re known for in addition to dishes rich in tropical ingredients like mango, pineapple and, of course, coconut. Plus, the custom surfboard tables and aloha culture will put you in an island state of mind. Recently, Coconuts was featured as one of CNN’s top 10 places to eat like a local and among its top 100 seafood restaurants in the world. Tiki Time If yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum is your thing, the contemporary island-style hideaway of Hula’s Modern Tiki (www.hulasmoderntiki. com) recently debuted its first-ever Rum Flights Menu, which allows guests to take their taste buds on a self-guided tropical tour of 24 of the world’s finest rums. With an airy Polynesian vibe, Hula’s is the perfect place to rejoice in it being five o’clock somewhere. Surf’s Up No need to head to the coast to enjoy the thrill of surfing when you can do it right here in the desert at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa’s (www.kierlandresort.com) Flowrider surf attraction. Riders of all ages (who are resort guests) can embrace the surfer lifestyle and go with the flow on this adrenaline-pumping stationary surf machine. After all the action, wind down in the lazy river or on your own “island” at the Tommy Bahama Relaxation Reef – an exclusive area you can rent for access to a private cove. White Sand Wonder Lazy days with your toes in the sand become a reality at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess’ (www.scottsdaleprincess.com) Sunset Beach. With more than 800 tons of white sand hauled in from Florida, the 9,000-square-foot beach surrounds the largest of the resort’s six pools. When not cooling down in the water, relax in comfy, oversized beach chairs shaded by towering palm trees or take a turn at the nearby dueling water slides. Coastal Getaway Soak up the classic Northeastern coastal lifestyle right in Old Town Scottsdale within The Montauk’s (www.themontaukaz.com) breezy indoor and outdoor spaces. East coast-inspired bites such as lobster rolls and clam chowder mingle with beachy eats like fish tacos and crispy rock shrimp. A lively spot to brunch, The Montauk is reminiscent of a day on the Eastern seaboard with friends.

GOODIES FROM THE GARDEN Eateries that forage for their foods
Did you know there are a host of local chefs with green thumbs? Many, in fact, are using ingredients throughout their menus that they’ve either grown themselves or foraged from nearby forests, farms or the desert. We’ve done the “foraging” for you to find some of the best places for digging into the freshest finds around.
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Cartwright’s Modern Cuisine In homage to Native Americans’ long history of honoring the abundance that the land provides, executive chef Brett Vibber heads an entire foraging team to harvest more than a dozen items for the menu including prickly pear, mushrooms, grapes and mulberry, often from Mortimer Farms in Dewey, Arizona. They also have their own citrus orchard on site, which grows all the lemons, oranges, grapefruits and limes used in dishes. www.cartwrightsmoderncuisine.com. Prado While the pool, spa and spectacular views of Camelback Mountain often take centerstage at Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia, the resort’s signature eatery, Prado, is all about the on-site Meyer lemon trees. Smaller and rounder than traditional lemons, the Meyer variety is known for its sweeter taste – almost a cross between a lemon and Mandarin orange. At Prado, they pick these lemons to make a homemade jam, which is paired with Marcona almonds and warm sourdough bread then served with triple-baked brie as an appetizer ($9). www.omnihotels.com. FnB Executive chef Charleen Badman is an avid gardener and a proud member of the Arizona Herb Association (nicknamed The Herbies). Her mission is to showcase the best of Arizona’s farming and agricultural community, including some of her own homegrown fruits, vegetables and herbs. She changes her menu very regularly – sometimes weekly, in fact, based on what is in season in her own garden and at area farmers markets. Some of the items most often from her own backyard include edible flowers, seasonal herbs and lobster mushrooms. www.fnbrestaurant.com. Boulders Resort & Spa Tucked into the Boulders is a 5,600-square-foot organic garden featuring lettuce, carrots, celery, heirloom tomatoes, herbs, edible flowers, maize, and other desert root vegetables, while nearby prickly pear cacti provide desert fruit offerings. The walls of the garden are dedicated to a fragrant orchard of citrus trees. Additionally, kumquat, a Mission fig tree and grapes also adorn the perimeter of the garden. As a result, nearly all of the dishes on each restaurant’s menu have something from the garden on the plate. www.theboulders.com. JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa The JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge boasts a 21,000-square-foot Chef’s Garden with fresh produce like asparagus, artichokes and strawberries, plus herbs used at the restaurants and even in the spa’s signature lotions. The resort’s executive chef Ryan Lamkin, along with the entire culinary team, implement garden-fresh goods in dishes from salads to homemade pesto, which uses dill, basil leaves and nasturtium petals all grown on site. Try it at Meritage, an Urban Tavern, where the sauce is the star of the cavetelli pesto served on fresh pasta with seasonal vegetables and Grana Padano ($23). www.jwmarriottdesertridge.com.

Blending nature, style and art, Tiffany Paper Flowers is one of the newest collections from iconic jeweler Tiffany & Co. It’s comprised of delicate pieces inspired by the idea of abstract flower petals and is rooted in reinterpreting nature with a balance of refined femininity and industrial modernity. The line’s platinum diamond and tanzanite flower ring personifies this, featuring round brilliant diamonds and cushion-cut tanzanite, a particularly special gem for this jewelry house. Discovered in 1967 in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, tanzanite was introduced to the world by founder Charles Lewis Tiffany the following year. Ranging from deep blue to eye-catching violet, this rare gemstone is found only in its namesake country, Tanzania. $6,000 at Tiffany & Co., www.tiffany.com. So Scottsdale! August ‘18

There’s a new road warrior in town, one that’s poised to be the perfect way to get around the neighborhood, from school drop-off to golf outings to grocery store runs. This summer, Southwestern Moke launched as the latest in the lineup from TK West, the only authorized dealer in Arizona for this European brand. What began as a British army vehicle in the 1950s eventually rose to fame as an island style icon seen among the elite in the French Riviera and Caribbean. Today, the 20th-century collectible car has been reinvented as an ecofriendly auto legal on Arizona roads with speed limits of 35 mph, boasting zero emissions and a battery that is fully chargeable in eight hours. It can hold up to four passengers and is offered in a selection of nine colors. Optional equipment includes a stereo, Bluetooth and a Bimini top, with customizations available for the wheels, seats and top color. Pricing starts at $16,975. www.southwesternmoke.com. 2018 HYUNDAI KONA
This all-new crossover utility vehicle takes adventure and style to new heights BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS: Base price: $19,000
On looks alone, the all-new Hyundai Kona easily wins the beauty contest. It’s as attractive as any auto in the entire realm of crossover utility vehicles, including the epochal and highly acclaimed Porsche Macan. In the case of Kona, its beauty is more than skin deep. Like other smaller Hyundai SUVs, Kona is named after a vacation spot, the Kona district on Hawaii’s Big Island. According to the Korean automaker, the name is intended to conjure images of the area – such as marine leisure sports and the aroma of Kona coffee. Inside, the subcompact interior – with 94 cubic feet of passenger volume and an additional 19 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seat – Kona feels larger than its segment competitors. I liked the clean, simple design of the interior, one that exudes style and quality, despite ample hard plastic surfaces. Kona occupies the entry-level rung of Hyundai’s crossover vehicle offerings (it’s smaller than the Tucson and Santa Fe) and is offered in four trim levels with a choice of standard frontwheel drive or optional all-wheel drive ($1,300).
70
So Scottsdale! August ‘18
All trim levels include a standard rearview camera; hill-start assist control; a tilt-telescopic steering wheel; Bluetooth capabilities; Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; keyless entry; and power windows, door locks and mirrors. Kona buyers also have a choice of two engines: The standard 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder that delivers 147 horsepower and is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, or a sportier 1.6-liter, 175-horsepower turbo four-cylinder. While driving, Kona delivers the best on-road dynamics among all vehicles I’ve tested in its class, thanks to zippy acceleration from my test car’s 1.6-liter engine when entering the highway or passing other vehicles. My time behind the wheel included the Big Island’s smooth roads with twists, rough roads with uneven pavement, and steep mountain roads that climbed to 7,000 feet. Simply put, the driving experience is more than impressive. Overall, the Hyundai Kona is a terrific new crossover with virtually nothing to fault and just about everything to like. And when it comes to overall value, it’s nearly impossible to beat.
Price as tested: $29,775 Engine: 1.6-L turbo four-cylinder Horsepower: 175 Seating: 5 Fuel economy: 26/29 mpg city/ highway Fab features: Upscale exterior and interior styling Athletic driving and handling dynamics Vibrant exterior color options

HIGH COUNTRY HAVEN
Combining mountainside luxury with alpine adventure, Telluride, Colorado, offers a summertime escape unlike any other BY CHELSEA YOUNG
It’s been said that Telluride, Colorado, got its name from the phrase “to hell you ride,” a warning about the arduous journey miners took to reach the remote town. Though, in reality, with its blue skies, undulating landscape and small-town charm, Telluride is more akin to a mountainous paradise – a true heaven on earth. Nestled within a canyon in Southwestern Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, Telluride sits at an 8,750-foot elevation surrounded by the largest concentration of 13,000- and 14,000-foot peaks in North America. A welcome escape from the Valley’s summer heat, high temperatures average 85 degrees in August and 77 degrees in September. The former mining town eventually became a ghost town before reinventing itself into a world-class vacation destination with plenty of alpine adventure trails as well as a booming festival season. Telluride was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964, and, today, has only 2,000 year-round residents. While just eight blocks wide and 12 blocks long, Telluride is packed with treasures, from colorful, Victorian-era homes to boutiques, art galleries and gourmet restaurants. Perhaps Telluride’s crown jewel is its gondola. As the only transportation system of its kind in North America, the free service connects Telluride to neighboring Mountain Village (up the mountain at 9,540 feet), where most of the resorts are as well as additional dining and shopping.
Stay In the heart of Mountain Village is the Madeline Hotel and Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection (www.madeline. aubergeresorts.com). This beautiful ski-in, ski-out property features 83 rooms and 71 residences with an unmistakable sense of inviting luxury, from its heated outdoor pools overlooking the mountains to a variety of lounge areas for unwinding with friends and family. The residences, available with up to four bedrooms, are an ideal option for those who want a vacation home with all the perks of a hotel.
Spa With prime views of the peaks, The Peaks Resort & Spa (www.thepeaksresort.com) is aptly named. It also houses the largest spa in Colorado, with 42,000 square feet that include an indoor-outdoor pool, hot and Roman tubs, a fitness lap pool, an indoor waterslide, a full-service spa and salon, a movement studio, and a fitness center. There is also an oxygen inhalation lounge to help you acclimate to the elevation, and treatments feature eco-friendly products.
Dine It’s while you wine and dine that you’ll discover one of Telluride’s greatest charms – how locals know one another by name. On any

given night, when you saunter up to the bar at the New Sheridan Hotel, you’ll immediately notice the camaraderie between patrons, and it’s infectious. The New Sheridan Hotel offers a trifecta of F&B enjoyment: an indoor bar, a chophouse restaurant (also great for brunch), and a rooftop bar with views to boot. Nearby, two other can’t-miss eateries are 221 South Oak, of which chef/owner Eliza Gavin appeared on Top Chef. The restaurant is lauded for its two seasonal menus, one a mélange of seafood, game and poultry with farm-fresh accents and the other an impressive all-vegetarian selection. The other is La Marmotte, an intimate retreat perfect for a romantic night, with French-inspired fare that changes nightly in a building that was once an ice house. Located at the top of the gondola, Allred’s is a must for sunset views during drinks or dinner. The cozy atmosphere overlooking the landscape below is the perfect place to tuck in for some locally influenced dishes like a juniper-bourbon marinated elk strip loin or a roasted Colorado rack of lamb.
Do Of course, it wouldn’t be Colorado without some serious outdoor adventure. Though the city is well-known for its 2,000 skiable acres, the months outside of ski season (late April through early November) offer plenty to do beyond the slopes. Telluride is packed with trails primed for hiking, biking and running. An easy morning walk is simply on the trail following the San Miguel River, which snakes along the side of town, by a park and toward Bridal Veil Falls, giving you a picturesque view of them from afar. A locally loved hiking trail, with a major waterfall reward (i.e., photo ops) at the end, is Bear Creek. This 4.6-mile hike is mostly meandering with a few uphill climbs, but the altitude is what makes this seemingly easy trek more challenging. Alternatively, give your feet a rest while scaling some major mountain terrain on an open-air tour with Telluride Outside. The four-wheel drive tours take riders up 13,000 feet, traveling old mining roads through the mountains and ghost towns. The ride is full of fun facts and, fair warning, lots of bumps, twists and turns.
Play Telluride is affectionately known as the “Festival Capital of the Southwest” for its plethora of summer and fall celebrations. Notable festivals include the balloon, wine, film and jazz festivals as well as the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, held annually in September. Interspersed throughout festival season (June through October) are other activities, including a Thursday night art walk, movies under the stars, a Friday farmers market, and live music.
Getting There By car, Telluride is a 485-mile drive from the Phoenix area. By plane, fly to Denver then connect to Montrose Regional Airport, from which Telluride Express provides service from Montrose directly to your hotel in Telluride on a scenic, 65-mile journey. Alternatively, Telluride Regional Airport, located 6 miles from town, is open to general aviation and private planes. Founded in Nebraska nearly a decade ago, Pitch Pizza began as a pizza-and-salad concept, though the menu quickly evolved to include pastas, chef specialties and seasonal items. But, at its core, Pitch, which expanded into Scottsdale in 2017, knows good pizza. It starts with the dough, which begins with a secret ingredient of Caputo flour imported from Italy. Then, it’s all about fresh ingredients. Take The Doc ($21), named for a longtime patron. This pie features olive oil infused with roasted garlic and red pepper flakes drizzled onto the dough, and it’s topped with mozzarella, goat cheese, house-cured pancetta, asparagus, peperonata (an Italian vegetable medley), and housemade fennel sausage before being baked in a coal-fired oven. The result is savory, meaty and marvelous. Tip: Do as the Italians do and add an egg ($1). Pitch Pizza, 6350 E. Thomas Road, Scottsdale; 480.272.7500; www.pitchpizzeria.com. So Scottsdale! August ‘18

BEAUTIFUL BOTTLES Turn your bar cart into an art gallery
Have you ever found yourself mesmerized by the unique shapes, sizes and colors of liquor bottles behind the bar? Though what’s on the inside counts the most, a well-designed vessel can leave a lasting impression long after the bottle is empty, and can even be the reason you buy it in the first place. Here are some finds that taste as good as they look.
Ocean Vodka Ocean Vodka is the only vodka in the world distilled from organic sugar cane and blended with deep ocean mineral water. The spirit is crafted in Maui and made with water that originated from a glacier that melted near Greenland more than 2,000 years ago. Once the water is brought to the surface on the Kona coast, it is organically purified and desalinated through a proprietary, natural filtration process. The bottle, which is crystal blue and looks almost like one you would find on an island with a message in it, is a clear homage to the spirit’s namesake: the ocean itself. It retails starting at $39.99 and is currently behind the bar at Base Pizzeria.
Deleón Tequila Known for its abundant character and balance, Deleón Tequila is comprised of agave hand-selected at harvest for high-quality and peak ripeness. Slow roasting of the agave in traditional brick and clay ovens, combined with slow fermentation, enrich the depth and complexity of the agave’s natural sweetness, creating a remarkably nuanced character. It is displayed in a stunning bespoke-style bottle made from fragrance-grade glass and is boldly tattooed with the distinguishing mark of the Deleón brand. Fine-line detailing accentuates the crowning – an ornate metal closure – which was meticulously hand-carved by a jeweler from a one-pound sphere of sterling silver. It retails starting at $32 and is currently behind the bar at Steak 44 and Dominick’s Steakhouse.
Glenmorangie Pride 1981 This is Glenmorangie’s most sublime single malt whisky to date. Characterized by the longest extra-maturation period of any Glenmorangie variation, Pride 1981 is a rare, limited-edition liquor with only 1,000 bottles available. Laurence Brabant, a French designer, teamed up with fine crystal glassware company Baccarat to create a round vessel with glass on the front and back and a circle of wood sandwiched in between. It retails for $3,600 and is currently behind the bar at the Scotch Library at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa.
Hennessy Paradis Impérial Inspired by a blend of rare cognacs ordered by Tsar Alexander I of Russia’s mother as a birthday gift for him in 1818, Hennessy’s master blender Yann Fillioux created Paradis Impérial, which is a

refined and elegant cognac with floral, orange and jasmine notes as well as a subtle smoke and spice. The bottle was designed by Stephanie Balini, an award-winning Baccarat designer. The silhouette of the stunning crystalline glass decanter is the iconic Hennessy shape, with a luxurious crystal cabochon that tops the 18-karat gold and silver collar. It retails for $2,700 and is currently behind the bar at AZ88, W Scottsdale and Mastro’s Steakhouse.
I.W. Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Reviving a classic, I.W. Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is sweeter up front with grain and corn immediately apparent, then moves onto notes of oak, raisin, caramel, spice and vanilla. Aged 15 years, the finish leaves a long and lasting mouthfeel perfect for enjoying as bourbon on the rocks or whiskey neat to truly appreciate the full flavor profile. The bottle is cut glass and a modern take on a classic decanter style. It retails starting at $75 and is currently behind the bar at Pig & Pickle, The Gladly, Donovan’s Steak & Chop House, Fox Cigar Bar and Torch Cigar Bar.
Volcán De Mi Tierra Volcán De Mi Tierra (which translates to “volcano of my land”) pays homage to and is named after a real volcano that sits in the lowlands of Jalisco, Mexico, called Volcán de Tequila. A resemblance of the volcano can be found at the base of the bottle. An expression of that local terrain, this 100 percent blue agave tequila blends herbal, citrus and spice notes indicative of the lowlands with fruit notes of cherry, pear and peach from the highlands. It retails starting at $40 and is currently behind the bar at Casablanca Rooftop Lounge and Sandbar.
Don Julio 1942 Produced in small batches and aged for a minimum of 2 1/2 years, Don Julio 1942 is handcrafted in tribute to the year that Don Julio González began his tequila-making journey. The rich caramel and chocolate nose gives way to a warm oak and vanilla taste with hints of roasted agave. The bottle is reminiscent of an agave leaf and hard to miss. It retails starting at $100 and is currently behind the bar at Blanco Tacos + Tequila, El Hefe and Diego Pops.
Don Julio Real While 1942’s size is striking, it would be remiss not to also note Real, one of the few extra añejo tequilas available on the market today. With a taste that can only be described as exquisite, its rich aromas and incredibly smooth, sophisticated flavor make this tequila truly a one of a kind. The bottle features silver agave fronds on each side and a beautiful silver piña stopper that can’t be found anywhere else. It retails starting at $300 and is currently behind the bar at Sol Mexican Cocina, Barrio Queen and Cien Agaves Tacos & Tequila. So Scottsdale! August ‘18

FLORAL INFUSION
Marcellino Ristorante pours up a drinkable work of art with the Italian Passion
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE
In addition to an impressive wine list, each bottle chosen by Italian native and award-winning chef Marcellino Verzino himself, Marcellino Ristorante also boasts an ever-evolving mixology menu. In developing the “Summer Sensations” menu (available at least through Labor Day), the bar’s mixologists looked to chef Verzino’s theory behind his food – creating visual and taste sensations with only a few fresh ingredients and lots of garden herbs – for inspiration. The Italian Passion ($15), named for the exuberance and life chef Verzino exudes, is that vision executed in a glass. It starts with Patron Rocca Silver Tequila, a premium liquor made using a centuries-old process wherein a two-ton volcanic stone wheel breaks down agave fibers and releases the subsequent juice that will become tequila. The result is a very complex and distinctly earthy flavor. To enhance the “passion” quotient in the cocktail, quite literally, the mixologist combines the tequila with organic passion fruit juice and freshly squeezed lime in the shaker. The fruits add a bright tartness and flowery aroma into the mix, while a drizzle of organic honey ramps up the sweet notes in the tequila. Then, the contents are shaken. Rather than pour the mixture over ice, the bar team freezes edible flowers and water to make a colorful, eye-catching ice sphere. The contents are poured in a rocks glass over the sphere, allowing it to melt just enough to enhance the outrageous beauty of the flowers. The fragrant drink is garnished with a basil leaf from the garden, again in a nod to the chef’s love of fresh herbs. Marcellino’s Ristorante, 7114 E. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Chris Fisher of Kelly’s at Southbridge
Executive chef Chris Fisher is all about bringing a little upscale flavor – and new savory options – to the comfort food-focused menu at gastropub Kelly’s at Southbridge.
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
First, thank you for serving our country. Can you share some of your military background? While I started cooking as a young child thanks to my Aunt June, I come from a military family. I enlisted in the Navy at 17 years old, serving tours in Panama and Iraq during Desert Storm, and then serving again in Afghanistan after 9/11 in 2001. How did you formally transition to being a chef? I earned my business degree from Indiana University and then decided to attend culinary school. My first big break came when I moved to Los Angeles and earned a catering captain position at Spago by Wolfgang Puck in Beverly Hills. There, I had the opportunity to produce dinners for the Academy Awards, Emmy Awards and movie premieres. When did you make your way to Arizona? In 2013, my best friend moved to the Valley and raved about it. When the house next door to him became available, I moved out here and we became neighbors. Since making my way to Arizona, I’ve helped develop menus for Ak-Chin UltraStar Multi-tainment Center, Blue Clover, Dorian and more. What is your vision for the menu at Kelly’s? I joined Kelly’s in March 2018, and my plan isn’t to reinvent the wheel. Instead, I want to take the pub fare and give it some nuance, elevating our dishes but still keeping our comfort food vibe. Oh, and adding brunch is a priority this fall. What is your favorite thing to make when not working? Reservations! Seriously, I love nothing more than sampling other local chefs’ menus. My favorites are Southern Rail, Beckett’s Table, Clever Koi, Pig & Pickle and Chula Seafood. What would we be surprised to know about you? Don’t let my bearded biker look fool you. You can often find me sipping Earl Grey tea while enjoying a good book. Kelly’s at Southbridge, 7117 E. 6th Ave., Scottsdale; 480.393.3205; www.kellysatsouthbridge.com.

Page Springs Cellars & Bistro A family-owned winery and vineyard tucked into the volcanic landscape overlooking pristine Oak Creek Canyon, Page Springs Cellars produces Rhone-style wines. Where the vineyard sets itself apart, however, is with the on-site bistro led by executive chef Bryan Nowicki. A firstlevel sommelier with decades of experience, Nowicki’s menu, which changes seasonally, is rooted in taking advantage of local ingredients to complement the wines. Don’t miss a few of the chef’s specialties: mason jar rillettes, anything he’s pickled, and handmade spreadable smoked salmon, duck or roasted vegetables, respectively. www.pagespringscellars.com.

Merkin Vineyards Tasting Room & Osteria Like Page Springs, Merkin Osteria is a tasting room with award-winning wine from Merkin Vineyards out of Willcox, Arizona. Also like Page Springs, they’ve completely redefined the Northern Arizona culinary scene with the introduction of this full-service Italian restaurant and tasting room led by executive chef Chris Smith, lauded for leading the kitchens at Robert’s Creekside Cafe & Grill, Sedona Rouge Hotel & Spa, The Asylum Restaurant, and Los Abrigados Resort & Spa before joining Merkin in 2016. Crema Craft Kitchen & Bar Crema will knock your socks off at breakfast and brunch. Its head chef, Michelle Jurisin, studied in Italy under a James Beard Awardwinning chef before coming to Cottonwood to launch Nic’s Italian Steak & Crab House and then Pizzeria Bocce before turning her sights to Crema, pulling together recipes from mentors and marrying them to family dishes and her own culinary vision. Dahl & DiLuca Ristorante Italiano More than 20 years ago, chef and owner Lisa Dahl sought healing after the loss of her son by moving to Sedona. All these years later, Dahl is a James Beard House-featured chef and widely credited for Sedona’s emergence as a national foodie destination. Today, she boasts several fine restaurants in the area, but Dahl & DiLuca was her first. The restaurant’s ample
many of which take influence from the South. Smith’s Southern-fried Arizona hot chicken, shrimp and grits, and pecan-smoked spare ribs are prime examples of the Southwest-meetsSouthern concept. The drink menu is similarly a love of all things local, bursting with Arizonamade spirits, wines, beers and native produce. www.rootpublichouse.com. Josephine’s Modern American Bistro Refined without being pretentious, chef Tony Cosentino uses the seasons – yes, they have them up in Flagstaff – to direct his menu at Josephine’s, taking advantage of the best produce and seafood from across the country month by month and often suggesting wine pairings from the Wine Spectator-awarded wine menu to accompany each dish. Of particular note is his achiote-smoked pork osso bucco, which is slow-braised and served with luscious Tillamook green chili polenta. And try the Southwestern crab cakes at any time – as a Benedict at brunch, in a sandwich or salad at lunch, and even as an entree at dinner, served with a sesame-crusted quinoa masa cake, jicama slaw, spicy remoulade and avocado tomatillo sauce. www.josephinesrestaurant.com.
Tucson menu spans a variety of pastas (don’t miss the lasagna), grilled surf and turf, and classic Italian specialties including chicken piccata and veal marsala. www.dahlanddiluca.com. Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill Perched atop a scenic bluff with panoramic views of Sedona’s majestic red rocks, Mariposa is also a Dahl venue taken in a totally different direction. By using a wood-fired grill and wood-burning oven, Dahl creates handmade delicacies inspired by her travels to Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. The lunch, tapas and dinner options are beyond impressive, but for something truly exceptional, splurge on the “Prix-Fixe Tomahawk for 2” with a wine pairing option, which features four courses showcasing a little bit of everything that makes Dahl’s cooking so special (including a whopping 34-ounce USDA prime rib-eye steak!). www.mariposasedona.com.
Café Poca Cosa Chef and owner Suzana Davila is a proud native of a native of Sonora, Mexico – and incorporates her rich Hispanic culture in every aspect of her restaurant. The authentic menu, which has been lauded by the likes of The New York Times and USA Today, is printed in Spanish on a portable chalkboard that servers take from table to table. And while it changes twice daily, rest assured every item can be paired with the extensive tequila and margarita options. For a variety of flavor, opt for the chef’s plate, which features a selection of items chosen by Davila – and you won’t be disappointed by the surprise. www.cafepocacosatucson.com.

Its signature eatery, Cress on Oak Creek, takes full advantage of this sought-after locale as its patio dining sits right along the babbling brook and lush forest landscape, while its interior is modern, sleek and romantic. Open only for dinner, each night executive chef Michael O’Dowd – famous in the Valley for putting Kai at the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass on the culinary map – dreams up a tasting menu available as a three-, four- or six-course dining experience inspired by three natural elements: earth, water and sky. www.lauberge.com.

Innovative BuyerHunt and BuyerHunt Agent apps give exclusive access to new homes on the market
BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTOS BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Imagine finding your dream home. Now, imagine finding it before anyone else knows it’s on the market. This is the exciting, cutting-edge real estate scenario that BuyerHunt founder Greg Hague is offering potential homebuyers. The brand-new BuyerHunt and BuyerHunt Agent apps, which just hit the real estate market in June, are poised to change the industry in a way that benefits homebuyers and sellers. Response has been tremendous. In the first few days of BuyerHunt’s premier, there were already 143 buyers signed up for the app. With a rich and diverse background in real estate, including becoming the No. 1 Christie’s Luxury Home brokerage in the Southwest, Hague set out to create a paradigm shift in the real estate industry. And he is hopeful to revolutionize the real estate industry in a way that benefits buyers and sellers. The BuyerHunt apps were created as a way to challenge third-party companies that are not necessarily part of the real estate profession, but rather publicly traded entities looking to monetize information shared by listing agents.

“The idea was that if I could find a way to get buyers to come to our profession first, then we would have a chance to take back the buyers,” says Hague, noting that BuyerHunt provides the opportunity for buyers to get access to home listings firsthand by avoiding those not directly involved in the listing process. “Every buyer wants to find their perfect home and get a good buy,” Hague says. “The best way to do that is to be the first to know about newly listed homes and learn about them before they are on MLS.” Hague says the app for potential buyers gives them a two-day advantage on a new home listing. “BuyerHunt is also a way for home sellers to showcase their homes to a massive database of buyers on the same day they list it,” he adds. By providing one version of the app for agents and one for buyers, BuyerHunt creates an advance notification system where an agent can put up a brand-new listing and potential buyers don’t have to wait to find it on MLS. Hague provides an example of the magic. “If a buyer notes that they’re looking for a certain type of home in a certain price range in a certain area, they would get pinged on their app,” Hague says. In minutes, a potential buyer can click the phone number to call the listing agent. The app also has the ability to set an appointment to tour the home, and the agent will get that information directly on their phone. By giving buyers advance listing notice and sellers the opportunity to get a group of interested buyers almost immediately, the homebuying and home selling processes may start moving much more quickly with BuyerHunt and BuyerHunt Agent. “If I can technologically pull it off, this will be a major game changer,” Hague says. BuyerHunt is free for potential homebuyers and BuyerHunt Agent is $35 for agents. For more information on the apps, visit www.buyerhunt.com.
