MEET DR. SAEED, MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF CANCER TREATMENT CENTERS OF AMERICA OUTPATIENT CARE CENTERS Different from other cancer treatment centers, Cancer Treatment Centers of America Outpatient Care Center in Scottsdale strives to provide the Mother Standard of care—treating patients as their own loved ones. As Medical Director, Dr. Saima Saeed understands that each patient has a name and a face, as well as their own personal history. “We realize that we are not only treating their cancer, we are treating the whole person. Our goal is to provide quality, whole person upto-date cancer care, while ensuring the patient feels heard, empowered, and is treated in a caring and dignified manner.” Before joining CTCA, Dr. Saeed was in private practice for 12 years, and also served as section chief of Hematology and Oncology at a large local hospital. These experiences provided her with the insight into what it takes to run an outpatient clinic. “It has helped me realize what it is that I want to do differently now that I am with CTCA, which is to spend more time with patients, listening to their questions.” Dr. Saeed believes that, in addition to medicine, other factors play a role in patient cancer care, including exercise, eating nutritious whole foods, managing stress levels, and quality of sleep. “I believe that if you are going to take care of others you must take care of yourself,” she explains, striving herself to exercise, meditate, and follow a healthy diet. The Outpatient Care Center in Scottsdale opened in March of 2018 as an outpatient facility, aiming to provide more accessible cancer options for patients in the Valley. “For me, it is a true honor and privilege to be able to care for cancer patients. I am proud to be a part of this amazing team of caregivers in Scottsdale,” says Dr. Saeed. TELL

August has a connotation of getting back to the grind. School is in session once again, and the promise of a busy fall is in the air. But with temperatures hotter than ever, summertime is far from over. So, does that mean lazy days and summer escapes – whether near or far – are a thing of the past? We think not! Head to the pines for foodie fun in Flagstaff (page 50); park yourself poolside at a resort to sip on the coolest cocktails around (page 78); or dig into a refreshing, superfood-packed bowl, smoothie or juice perfect for a summertime health kick (page 82). Think a bit bigger and plan a holiday to Healdsburg, a quaint Northern California town where one wine-growing family has a special September viticulture excursion in store (page 75). Or, think even bigger by booking a ticket to explore the historic charm of Vienna, Austria (page 76). But if getting back to the grind is on your radar, then we’ve also got a desk you won’t mind putting in the hours at (page 71) and a chic little backpack to tote around, even if you’re not heading to class (page 57). Eating between meetings and activities? You won’t have to sacrifice flavor or quality at some of our favorite fast-casual spots (page 52). This month, I am particularly excited about a couple features. First, there’s Martha Picciao-Mazor, the founder of Whiz Kidz Preschool (you may have passed by the Scottsdale location at Cactus and Scottsdale roads). Her story, on page 21, is one of believing in your vision enough to bring it to life, no matter what. I’ve actually done readings of my book, The Color of Mother, at Whiz Kidz so this school has a special place in my heart. Second, while I have not met our cover girl – singer and songwriter Julia Rizik – I know we’d get along because we both have a passion for giving back through our respective crafts, especially to kids. Learn how Julia is using the universal language of music to help others while paving her way in the industry on page 36. As always, I hope the people and places within these pages leave you feeling inspired. Stay cool, Scottsdale! EDUCATE & INSPIRE

Martha Picciao-Mazor has made it her life’s work to support children and families in the community As the founder and CEO of Whiz Kidz Preschool, both Martha Picciao-Mazor’s life and career have been shaped by her passion for serving and supporting those around her. After two years teaching first grade in a local school district, Picciao-Mazor made the decision to stay home with her first

child and start her own in-home preschool. She transformed her garage into a classroom, providing local families and their children with not only educational programs, but a safe community to learn and grow. Five years and another baby later, Picciao-Mazor’s home

Pulse UP CLOSE preschool operation – her first adventure in entrepreneurship – was rocked by a divorce. “Being a single mother, I needed some sort of security,” she says. “It was a very difficult time in my life. I had no family around and nothing but my teaching degree to fall back on.” With her oldest child about to start kindergarten, PicciaoMazor began looking for a stable teaching job to support her family. But the school year had already begun, and this unfortunate timing meant that Picciao-Mazor was unable to find a full-time position. She began selling appliances online to make ends meet. But soon came a stroke of good luck. “Months later, I got a call that would forever change my journey,” Picciao-Mazor says. “I was offered the chance to take over a failing early childhood education center and, knowing this would make my dream come true, I jumped without hesitation or reserve.” The preschool was in worse condition than she had anticipated, but Picciao-Mazor worked tirelessly – for years without profits or pay – to save the program, motivated by the support system around her. “It was not easy,” Picciao-Mazor says. “Many days I second-guessed my decision, but I never gave up. My father always taught me that tough times don’t last, but tough people do.” Her father, who moved to the U.S. from Italy, and her mother, who immigrated from Mexico, instilled in Picciao-Mazor the importance of hard work and excellence in everything she does. With these lessons from her immigrant parents in the back of her mind, Picciao-Mazor was able to adapt and evolve, scaling her preschool business from her repurposed garage to a successful childcare business with campuses in Scottsdale and Phoenix, with a third location opening in Mesa this month. Whiz Kidz Preschool is centered around a play-based curriculum that lets children explore their own expression through outside learning environments, all-natural meals, and family events that help busy parents ensure their children are able to be active in extracurriculars and preschool programs. Whiz Kidz is focused on creating a community that provides an essential support system for both children and their parents, something that PicciaoMazor knows the importance of firsthand. “My career and businesses have evolved thanks to people,” she says. “I thank God every day for the amazing people that have been part of the Whiz Kidz journey, from its first days in that rehabbed garage until now.”

Live to Learn Especially as a business owner – and one in education, no less – Picciao-Mazor believes it’s important to continue evolving. “As a leader, I am a lifelong learner,” she says. “If you’re not growing, you’re dying. I am always seeking ways to learn, not just for the children and families I serve, but for the army of educators I lead.” This focus on learning has also contributed to the advancement of Picciao-Mazor’s career. As Whiz Kidz Preschool started to grow, Picciao-Mazor’s need for quality staff increased as well. After noticing that other educational centers had the same need, she started Whiz Teachers On Demand, a staffing company that

22

provides trained substitute teachers for early learning centers. “I love serving children and their families as well as the people and professionals who are the hands and heart of early childhood education,” Picciao-Mazor says. Picciao-Mazor, a proud wife and mother of three boys, knows that this willingness to grow, as well as the ability to ask for help, can be the key to success. After years of growing her business while supporting her family, Picciao-Mazor attributes much of her success to the people around her. “I don’t see myself as self-made,” she says. “So many people and life lessons have helped get me to where I am and where I’m headed.” Picciao-Mazor proves that with the power of a great support system, you can achieve your dreams, and then some. In addition to all that she does already, Picciao-Mazor is working on publishing an educator’s journal to help empower and encourage early childhood professionals. Having felt the powerful influence of a supportive network of friends and family, Picciao-Mazor aspires to serve others with that same sense of dedication. “My hope is to inspire others on my team and in my circle, and those that I may have the privilege to influence,” she says. “One of my biggest passions is giving others significance. Even the most successful people want to know that they are significant. At the end of my days, I want to know that I mattered and made others feel important.” To learn more, visit www.whizkidzpreschool.com.

Celebrating 8 Years in Scottsdale Rodney Gentry, Top Hair Color Expert

Rodney Gentry is not only a color connoisseur, but also an expert with fine hair. His charm and zeal, in part, are why his clients adore him and refuse to settle for anyone else. Simply put, many of them do not trust anyone but Rodney with their hair. Keeping an open mind is how Rodney maintains his long list of loyal clients. “I keep communication open between a client and myself. I listen to people and what they have to say; their concerns or struggles with their hair. I think listening has turned into a lost art, but it’s something I do naturally,” he says. Based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, Rodney says he is happier than ever, having experienced many successes in Scottsdale over the past eight years. After a biking accident, Rodney moved to the Valley from Chicago, where he had owned and operated a studio. “I wanted a better, dryer climate. The humidity and cold of Chicago no longer held appeal for me.” Here, he opened a very successful studio, but running it took time away

from his true passion: coloring and styling. “I found myself reevaluating life and what was most important to me. I got back to my roots and back to what I love to do.” Rodney’s true joy and expertise is color. He specializes in creating a natural look that highlights the features of a client’s face and their complexion. By considering the history and condition of the hair, he provides each and every client with a unique experience catered to the individual. Rodney focuses on the needs of their hair, nurturing it back to full health, and providing a style that can be easily cared for at home. Rodney stays on the cutting edge of new and current trends. He is extremely knowledgeable with styling products, and almost exclusively uses Goldwell styling and color products. Enzymebased rather than peroxide-based, Goldwell color products nurture the hair at the same time as giving it a remarkably vibrant color. Along with color, Rodney performs wonders for fine hair to add volume and texture. His clients are amazed at

how different their hair looks after a color treatment. When talking with a client, he can recommend highlights or lowlights to achieve the desired texture and volume. Simple drying techniques can also make a big difference for those with fine hair. Part of why clients rave about Rodney is that he shows them how to achieve the same styled looks outside of the salon. “It’s important to live authentically and to do what you love. I’m happy where I’m at because I’m able to meet really great people and provide personalized care for each,” Rodney says.

ANY QUESTIONS?

Fasturtle CEO Eric Olsen finds success by seeking answers

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Both the local small business and philanthropic communities have Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson to thank for one of its staunchest advocates. “Gatorade and Nike debuted two iconic campaigns when I was growing up,” Eric Olsen says. “Gatorade’s ‘Be Like Mike’ and Nike’s ‘Bo Knows’ campaigns changed the face of branding forever.” Olsen became so engrossed by the “hows” and “whys” behind these viral pre-Internet sensations that he ended up with an odd hobby. “I would rip compelling ads out of magazines and collect them the way other kids collected baseball cards,” Olsen says. He went on to study psychology and marketing at Arizona State University as a direct result. After college, Olsen got his start in the digital marketing space just in time for the tech boom – and bust. “Working with flash-in-the-pan businesses that professed one thing then did another rubbed me the wrong way,” says Olsen, who quit his job in 1999 with a vision to start his own business. In 2000, his company, Fasturtle, was born. An oxymoron by design, the full-service digital marketing company works at the speed of light, but spends real time getting to know the people and mission behind each brand. It seeks to answer how the business best provides a specific service, and why it is important. “We’ve done work for mega-brands like Disney and ESPN, but today we focus on helping small businesses ‘Be Like Mike’ in their own way, within a reasonable budget,” Olsen says. This vision earned Fasturtle a spot in Entrepreneur magazine’s 2018 “Entrepreneur 360 List” for its impact and innovation. Just as impactful away from the keyboard, Olsen recently completed five years on the Fiesta Bowl committee and began volunteering on the men’s board for Fresh Start Women’s Foundation. He’s also on the board for Tonto Creek Camp, which offers STEMfocused outdoor youth education. Olsen’s next project: connecting his digital expertise with his philanthropic nature. “Fasturtle is seeking nonprofits in need of web assistance and pro bono digital services. We want to connect their stories to as many donors and volunteers as possible,” says Olsen, who’s already helped MakeA-Wish Arizona, St. Joseph The Worker and Playworks.

PUPPY LOVE

Ragan Grossman specializes in upgrading dogs’ duds through Fetch Denim

BY KAYLOR JONES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

For Ragan Grossman, co-founder and chief marketing officer of Fetch Denim, life is all about her furry friends. In fact, Grossman met her husband of 14 years at a dog park. “It happens in real life, not just in the movies,” she says. “We even had the dogs in our wedding!” But while her personal life has been ruled in part by her love of dogs, the same was not always true of her career. After nearly 15 years of working in sales in the hospitality industry – including being a sales manager at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale and the director of sales at The Phoenician – Grossman felt like she might be ready for a change. And last spring, Grossman found the courage to take that chance. “Even though I loved what I did and got to travel all around the world, something was always missing from the creative aspect. I wanted to make something of my own.” So, she and her husband, Andrew, who was also ready for a change in his career, put their heads together. “Our brainstorming conversation was quick because we knew there was one thing we both loved – dogs,” Grossman says. From this, Fetch Denim (www.fetchdenim.com), a company proving that pups can express their personalities through fashion just like people, was born. With a line of collars and leashes made from natural fiber (notably durable hemp and cotton denim), Grossman prides herself on running a company that is not only stylish but environmentally friendly – hemp is a sustainable, low-impact crop, and its natural plant fibers decompose in a landfill in only five to six months. In the works for the line are the additions of harnesses and dog beds as well as a new denim color option. “It’s been fun, exciting, messy and unpredictable,” Grossman says. “Andrew and I started with an idea, but then took it a step further and made it come alive. The real work begins where most people quit.” Grossman knows as well as anyone that with big risks come big rewards, and she wouldn’t change a thing about her journey. “One of my biggest accomplishments is jumping off the pristine corporate ladder into the chaotic mud puddle of business ownership,” she says. “I’ve been humbled by this process and have a newfound appreciation for anyone willing write their own script.”

STYLE WITH SUBSTANCE Kip Meany believes fashion is more than skin deep

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Whether you’re looking for a little touch-up or a red-carpet makeover, Kip Meany, manager of luxury beauty retailer Cos Bar at Kierland Commons, brings more than 25 years in the beauty industry to everyone who walks into Cos Bar. The Arizona State University alumnus turned stylish skincare guru has a distinctive fashion sense that is classic with a modern edge. He exudes confidence without being over the top and looks to Tom Ford and George Clooney for their attire and the poise they exude. “For suiting, Hugo Boss has always been my go-to for the modern fit. For casual, I stick with Joe’s Jeans, Ted Baker, and Calvin Klein.” Immersing himself in the world of luxury style, Meany knows that elegance goes beyond what’s in his closet. How he carries himself, treats others, and what impression he leaves are all contributors to his personal brand and warm persona. Living in the desert, Meany leans toward cool tones and understated prints, rarely wearing loud patterns so that his outfit doesn’t enter the room before he does. And his style must-have? A pair of modern, designer ankle boots that he can dress up or down.

What is your No. 1 style tip? A neatly pressed shirt. Nothing distracts me more than a wrinkled shirt. Besides clothing, what else contributes to your style? Personal grooming. Our weather can be brutal, and us guys need to get better at taking care of our skin. A unique scent tops it off – nothing too intense, just enough to leave an impression. Do you prefer to follow trends or set your own? I believe in observing the trends, and then tweaking them to work for me. As I get older, it’s important for me to maintain my individuality even if I follow a trend.

A STYLISH LEGACY Alecia Reilly sets her own trends and creates her own jewelry

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Alecia Reilly, owner of Legacy Blvd Jewelry, has made it her mission to help women feel their best by creating custom one-of-a-kind necklaces with meaning. Like the dainty jewelry she makes, her style is simple and polished. Following in the footsteps of Kristin Cavallari, Reilly prefers an effortless look and sticks to structured pieces and solid colors, including a variety of all-white ensembles. Working from home allows Reilly to spend the majority of her week in athleisure wear. “Lululemon is my holy grail!” she says about her love of the brand. When she’s not producing her ultrafemme necklaces – which can be customized with letters, birthstones and other special symbols – the mom of two loves to throw on a dress or romper to spend time with her daughters and frequently turns to online shopping from Lulus and Amazon, a busy mom’s best friends. Following trends is not at the top Reilly’s priority list, and she advises others to dress for their body types when creating a personal style. “I like to set my own trends because not every trend flatters my figure,” she says. “Style is whatever clothing and accessories make you feel beautiful and comfortable in your own skin!”

What is your must-have item when it comes to fashion? I think accessories can really perfect your look. I wear my Legacy Blvd necklaces every day and every night – since they’re so dainty, they pair well with any outfit or location. What is your most prized possession in your closet? A pearl necklace my mom had custom-made for me and my sister before she passed away. What would someone say if they looked in your closet? You have every piece of clothing color-coordinated – even your workout clothes!

Singer and songwriter Julia Rizik inspires others through music

Julia Rizik’s musical journey began at the tender age of 11, when, as a young girl with hopes, dreams and undiscovered talent, she took the stage at open mic night – an evening that would change her life. Full of nerves and just a little bit of stage fright, she began to sing and wowed the crowd. She would leave that stage to chase her dreams and become the rising star she is today. Rizik was born and raised in Scottsdale on a street surrounded by her large Armenian family. The youngest of three sisters, she spent her days chasing after them, attempting to keep up. While extremely close to her mom, it was her father who truly introduced her to music. “I always had music in my blood,” Rizik says. “When I was born, my dad wrote a song just for me. One of my favorite memories is dancing in the kitchen as he sang it. I remember him twirling me, and it was a moment that truly touched my soul.” Soon after her open mic debut, Rizik began honing her craft. She has trained with vocal coach Adriana McPhee – a coach on American Idol – since age 12. At the same time, Rizik learned how to play guitar. Her two talents combined, a signature sound emerged. Since those formative years, Rizik’s voice naturally gravitated toward country music, and this has shaped her continually evolving career. Now, at just 18 years old, Rizik is taking the musical world by storm and is already considered an on-stage veteran, having performed at major festivals such as Stagecoach and Country Thunder as well as Scottsdale Fashion Week earlier this year, always with her custom pink Fender guitar. With four singles released in the past year, Rizik is on a trajectory to accomplish international acclaim. “I used to sing and write mostly country songs, but lately I feel like I am coming into my own and experiencing a new level of confidence in myself and my voice,” Rizik says. “My new singles have more of a pop and R&B feel to them, with the elements of storytelling that I have always loved in country music.”

xGxiving Back

A frequent volunteer at hospitals and charity events, Rizik notes that her favorite part about singing is using her voice to give back. “I always dreamed of playing at

Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The idea that I could bring hope to the kids with my voice with just the right song really hit home for me,” Rizik says. “I was so lucky when a friend from Fender introduced me to the organization Musicians on Call. They run a program that allowed me the ability to make visits and create smiles. I am so very grateful to them.” Backed by Musicians on Call’s mission, Rizik has had the chance to go room to room to play for children with life-threatening illnesses, veterans facing PTSD and injuries related to their deployment, and other patients in hospitals in Phoenix and Nashville. These opportunities taught her much about not only the fragility of life, but also the power her voice could have. “One of the most memorable moments I have experienced was at a Nashville hospital,” Rizik says. “My guide took me into a critical care floor and warned me this visit might be a little more intense. A family ushered me into a room where a man was lying covered in a bed. They asked me to play Adele’s Make You Feel My Love, and through the whole song, they cried inconsolably. I couldn’t help wondering if I was helping at all, but at the end they hugged me and thanked me.” Rizik walked away shaken, unable to forget the grieving family and hoping she had given them some solace. A few weeks later she received a Facebook message from the family. The man had passed during the song. It had been his favorite. “I just broke down in tears,” Rizik says. “I felt so connected to that family in that moment. Music had done that.” Since then, Rizik continues to be inspired by her visits to local hospitals and remains focused on building her budding music career. With several new singles set to release this fall, she continues to watch her fame rise and her songs pop up on Spotify playlists. For Rizik, it truly is a dream come true. “I love what I do, and I hope to keep growing as an artist,” Rizik says. “For me, music is about listening to your own voice and not being afraid to share it. So I’ll keep writing and connecting with my fans, and we’ll see what the future holds for me.” Lean more about Rizik at www.juliarizik.com and find to her music on Pandora, Spotify, iTunes and Apple Music.

Testosterone Therapy

The Hormone Zone’s doctors talk its benefits in helping men lose weight Cristina Romero-Bosch and John A. Robinson are the husband-andwife team behind The Hormone Zone, a boutique medical practice in Scottsdale. The board-certified naturopathic doctors have 26 years of combined experience in hormone replacement therapy and age management medicine, including unique therapies for weight loss. The doctors offer several weight loss programs for men and women. Programs are customized to a patient’s unique needs, so no one program looks alike. They provide patients with a comprehensive health plan that incorporates diet, exercise, a specific regimen of supplements, and very often, testosterone replacement therapy. The benefits of testosterone supplements are countless. Robinson notes the benefits and more in an observational study titled, “Effects Long-Term Testosterone Treatment on Weight and Waist Size in Men with Obesity.” The study

followed eight obese men over eight years who all had testosterone treatment and captured their results. Bosch and Robinson review the important discoveries of the study and offer their direct thoughts: STUDY: TESTOSTERONE PROVIDES LONG-TERM WEIGHT LOSS. Bosch and Robinson: When we are talking about weight loss, real weight loss, we are talking about long-term permanent weight loss. There are many diet therapies that lead to rapid weight loss in the beginning but have a difficulty in maintaining the loss over time, particularly over the first year. But testosterone therapy can help with weight loss and maintaining it even years after the therapy has started. TESTOSTERONE THERAPY FOR UP TO EIGHT YEARS RESULTS IN PROGRESSIVE, CONTINUOUS AND SUSTAINED

REDUCTION IN BODY WEIGHT, WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE AND BODY MASS INDEX, REGARDLESS OF AGE. The key to any successful hormone replacement therapy program is consistency. Keeping testosterone levels consistent and keeping the patient consistent will yield the best results, not just with weight loss, but with mood, energy, libido, physical enhancements and motivation. In the study, patients who used testosterone consistently for eight years lost more weight than patients who were given a weight loss program to follow. IMPROVEMENTS IN WEIGHT LOSS PARAMETERS ARE ACCOMPANIED BY SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN GLYCEMIC CONTROL, INFLAMMATION, BLOOD PRESSURE AND QUALITY OF LIFE, REGARDLESS OF OBESITY GRADE AND AGE. These simple blood tests are rou-

tinely performed at The Hormone Zone. These “metabolic markers” help to show how any therapy is working. Testosterone therapy helps improve sugar (glucose) levels and overall inflammation in the body. TREATING OBESE MEN WITH TESTOSTERONE FOR EIGHT YEARS IS SAFE. We have heard a lot of noise in the media in late 2014 and early 2015 about the safety of testosterone therapy in men. This false narrative has been refuted by thorough analysis and commentary on the copious literature that shows that testosterone therapy is safe and very effective at aiding in weight loss, improving cardiovascular outcomes, and lowering the risk for diabetes and insulin resistance. The answer is a resounding YES! Dr Andrew Wolin, a surgeon with training in Plastic Surgery as well as ENT/Facial Plastic Surgery, has been sculpting the nasal form for the past 30 years and has well over a thousand happy and satisfied nasal patients. form utilizing computerized imaging as well as free hand drawing analysis to solve every patient’s individual problems. He feels that the ultimate goal of restoring facial harmony should satisfy the patient’s wants and needs first, rather than many surgeon’s approach of providing “ the same nose for all patients”. “It is the patient’s right as well as the surgeon’s duty to listen to the patient and provide a plan to satisfy every individual patient’s need. Only in that way, will the best outcome be reached and the melding of art and science be achieved” says Dr Wolin.

The reimagined Arizona Good Food Expo brings together local purveyors and wholesale buyers

BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

IF YOU GO… What: Arizona Good Food Expo When: Aug. 26, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; reception, 3:30-5 p.m. Where: Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, 11111 N. 7th St., Phoenix Tickets: $25 Information: www. goodfoodfinderaz.com

Arizona Good Food Expo, formerly known as Arizona Farmer + Chef Connection, caters to culinary professionals and wholesale buyers – as well as those with an interest in or connection to the local food industry – looking to source more local ingredients and products. The expo welcomes more than 75 Arizona purveyors into a marketplace setting at Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, where attendees will learn more about local sourcing and foster relationships with Valley-based suppliers. Local First Arizona, a nonprofit that celebrates independent, locally owned businesses, has hosted the event for 10 years. And throughout the years, chefs weren’t the only ones in attendance. Grocery purchasers, culinary students and food distributors were on the roster, too. In

an effort to incorporate all of the attendees, and to usher in the event’s 10th year, Local First Arizona rebranded the event. “Changing the name to Arizona Good Food Expo better reflects the mission behind the event – to showcase Arizona’s best local food and build lasting relationships between food producers and wholesale buyers – but is more inclusive of the state’s broad range of food buyers who aren’t necessarily chefs,” says Emily Bell, Good Food programs manager at Local First Arizona Foundation. So, what exactly can you expect from the 10th annual Arizona Good Food Expo? Besides meeting face to face with farmers, food artisans and specialty beverage producers, attendees will enjoy seasonal samples, interactive displays and wholesale

discounts. After the expo, Charleen Badman, a recent James Beard Award winner and co-owner of Scottsdale’s FnB restaurant, will impart her food wisdom as the featured speaker during a reception at the resort’s Different Pointe of View restaurant. There, attendees will nosh on menu items crafted by executive chef Anthony DeMuro that utilize ingredients from this year’s vendors. Beyond eating delicious foods, the industry-focused event is built upon lasting connections that help local businesses thrive. “Sourcing Arizona's homegrown foods is essential to building a healthier Arizona, and the relationships made at the expo will leverage our agricultural bounty for the benefit of all,” says Kimber Lanning, founder of Local First Arizona and Local First Arizona Foundation.

SAVOR THE SUMMER

Escape to Flagstaff for an epicurean adventure Flagstaff is experiencing a gastronomic renaissance of epically delicious proportions, and there is no better time to head up north and savor it all than during the summer. Here are five can’t-miss stops to fuel up.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

FOR COCKTAILS: Annex Cocktail Lounge Tinderbox Kitchen is often credited among the restaurants that launched the region’s current foodie movement. The restaurant itself became so successful, in fact, that the owners were able to acquire the space next door a few years ago and reimagine it into Annex Cocktail Lounge, a hip, indoor-outdoor cocktail bar on par with the Valley’s Bitter & Twisted. Their mission is for each of their drinks to tell a story. And the stories thus far have clearly been impressive considering Sunset magazine named Annex among its 2017 “Travel Stars” as well as one of the chief reasons to visit the Southwest. www.annexcocktaillounge.com. FOR WINE: Brix Restaurant & Wine Bar Contemporary and cool, Brix not only spotlights all things local by sourcing ingredients from farmers and ranchers across Northern Arizona and the Four Corners region, but does so while simultaneously shining a light on the ideal wines to pair with each resulting dish. Case in point: The drink menu, which predominately features local, regional and international wines by the bottle and glass, is an eye-popping 14 pages long! But don’t worry, there is always a sommelier nearby to offer suggestions, recommendations and insight. www.brixflagstaff.com. FOR BEER: Historic Barrel + Bottle House With 20 beers on tap and growlers to go, Historic Brewing Company’s Barrel + Bottle House provides guests with a wide selection of locally brewed favorites. Don’t miss creative pours including Historic’s signature Piehole Porter, a traditional brown porter infused with cherries and vanilla. Or, go even richer with the barrel-aged version of this brew. There are also summer offerings with infusions like lemon and grapefruit available through October. Bonus: The dog-friendly patio is open year-round. www.historicbarrelandbottle.com. FOR BRUNCH: Criollo Latin Kitchen Specializing in dishes from South and Central America including Mexico, Brazil and Haiti, Criollo Latin Kitchen been recognized by Arizona Highways and USA Today for its inspired fusion. And while the modern, sleekly decorated hot spot also offers lunch and dinner, be sure to visit during weekend brunch, which is offered Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are Southwestern comfort food classics such as huevos rancheros as well as out-of-thebox takes on Navajo fry bread and pancakes infused with mezcal. www.criollolatinkitchen.com. FOR DINNER: The Cottage Farmhouse French Bistro Formerly The Cottage Place and famously run for more than 20 years by acclaimed chef Frank Branham in a bungalow first built in 1909, The Cottage Farmhouse French Bistro opened in 2017 under new ownership. Now in the deft and delicious hands of Scott Heinonen, known for his work at Tinderbox Kitchen and as the one-time private chef to Sir Paul McCartney, The Cottage serves seasonal bistro cuisine inspired by the flavors and beauty of the French countryside. www.thecottageflagstaff.com.

PDQ Short for “People Dedicated to Quality,” this hybrid of fast food and fast-casual dishes out fresh (never frozen), hand-breaded chicken tenders, nuggets, sandwiches and bowl options. Everything is made to order in front of guests via an open kitchen, and the meat is free from added hormones and steroids. The award-winning restaurant features homemade sauces including sweet Sriracha and creamy garlic, as well as salads and sides including zucchini fries and chile-lime corn. PDQ also offers hand-spun milkshakes, homemade cookies, a kids’ menu, and a drive-thru. www.eatpdq.com. Ramen Hood This Asian-inspired build-your-own-bowl concept opened in Scottsdale in 2018. Guests first choose either traditional or gluten-free noodles, then one of five broths, which include both meat and vegetarian options and vary in spice level. Then, there are three optional proteins: teriyaki chicken, cha siu pork or tofu. Beyond these ingredients, guests may choose from nearly 20 additional items ranging from vegetables to more adventurous fare such as fish cakes and seaweed. www.eatramenhood.com. Coconut’s Fish Cafe Oozing with island charm, this family-friendly, Hawaiian-inspired eatery expanded to Scottsdale in 2013 from Maui, where it was recognized by Zagat for having “the perfect fish taco.” Now with two locations in Scottsdale, Coconut’s serves only sustainable, wild-caught fish that are hand-cut daily. The menu is divided into 10 categories ranging from appetizers, soups and salads to baskets, taco plates, sandwiches and pasta. There is also a “Keiki” menu for kids with quesadillas, hot dogs and fish. www.coconutsfishcafe.com. Dog Haus In April, this California-based hot dog shop moved into Scottsdale Quarter. They offer hormone- and antibiotic-free all-beef hot dogs, hamburgers and sausages on sweet King’s Hawaiian rolls as well as similarly antibiotic-free chicken and plant-based options. You can build your own dog or choose from a menu of unique offerings. Among the signature items is the “Sooo Cali” with arugula, avocado, tomatoes, crispy fried onions, and spicy basil aioli, or the “Pineapple Express,” a bacon-wrapped hot dog topped with seasoned mayonnaise, sweet ginger glaze, pineapples, scallions, pickled jalapenos, and crispy onions. www.doghaus.com. Modern Market Eatery Now with two Scottsdale locations, this restaurant prides itself on being a fast-scratch kitchen where the focus is on farm-fresh ingredients from local purveyors like Abby Lee Farms, Duncan Family Farms and Cartel Coffee Lab, among others. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the eatery has hearty grain bowls, toasted sandwiches and flatbreads, but really excels at its hand-carved plates, which give guests the option to mix and match their own well-balanced meals of protein, vegetables and starches. www.modernmarket.com.

WEARABLE ART Kathryn Guler’s art takes jewelry to a new vibrancy

BY HEATHER LYNN HORVAT

Scottsdale artist Kathryn Guler has always had a passion for color, shape and texture. “From a young age, I knew that I wanted to design unique items. From there, the desire to create spread to working with glass, colors and exploring metal,” Guler says. Wielding various mediums like glass, enamels and metals, Guler uses her sharp eye for color to create wearable art such as bracelets, necklaces, earrings, pendants and rings in addition to Southwestern bolas, which showcase her own spin for womenswear. She constructs unique beads by layering glass, metals, enamels, frits and murrinis, which are cross sections of patterned glass canes. She also fashions beads and bead sets for jewelry designers and collectors. “It started out that my glasswork drove all of my work, but as of late, some of my work hasn’t included glass,” Guler says. “Sometimes my hands guide the work, and at other times my hands are reacting to the media, helping me learn new ways to present my ideas through my work.” Guler aims to keep her work fresh while expanding her skills with new techniques. In 2013, the artist was introduced to copper enameling, which sparked new energy into her already vibrant glasswork. Her enameled work, which fuses glass to metal, is kilnfired and counter-enameled to provide brilliant colors, durability and protection against fading for everyday wear. “I like a challenge, whether it is a themed exhibit or including a given item in my work,” Guler says. “It pushes me to explore ways to bring different mediums together.” Currently, Guler’s favorite pieces are mixed media that incorporate glass and metal, especially her latest works featuring Prismacolor pencils. “Using the colored pencils allows me to bring a new depth to my work by creating patterns and blending colors in exceptional ways,” she says. To advance her experience of art, Guler studied art at both Scottsdale Community College and Arizona State University. Some of her artistic influences include hot glass flame worker Bronwen Heilman and studio jeweler Deb Karash. Guler is affiliated with the Arizona Society of Glass Beadmakers, the International Society of Glass Beadmakers, the Sonoran Arts League, and Arizona Designer Craftsmen. For the past two years she has participated in the Camelback Studio Tour, and she recently taught a workshop on enameling at SW Art Glass in Phoenix. Her jewelry is available for purchase at Van Gogh’s Ear in Prescott and Tubac Art and Gifts in Tubac, which has online shopping and shipping available. To see more of Guler’s one-of-a-kind pieces or to contact her, visit www.kathrynguler.com.

2020 KIA TELLURIDE The highest-ranked midsize SUV on the market BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: 2020 Kia Telluride Base price: $31,690

Kia just introduced the all-new Telluride, a three-row midsize SUV with seating for up to eight people. It is the largest Kia ever offered, much larger than the hugely popular Sorento. The newcomer is 8 inches longer and 4 inches wider, with a wheelbase that stretches nearly 5 inches farther. The Telluride joins the market at a time when the public is begging for more SUV choices, especially those with room for eight. The Telluride is a few inches bigger than the Honda Pilot and the new Toyota Highlander, creeping up on the size of a Chevy Tahoe. The bold, boxy design has no sloping, hatchback-like roofline to rob interior space. The back is as squared off as the front, with attractive, L-shaped rear tail lamps that only serve to emphasize its width. On the interior, it’s clear that practicality hasn’t replaced comfort. The instrument panel is wide and simplistic, with classy, open-pore wood that resembles reclaimed driftwood. It’s adorned with brushed silver metallic trim and switchgear

Driver and passenger visibility is superb. Power comes from a responsive 3.8-liter V-6 engine with 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Four trim levels are offered in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive, including the toptier SX, tested here. The most amazing thing about the new Telluride is its absolutely impressive driving, handling and ride character. The Telluride is a superb midsize SUV. With a large cargo hold, a long warranty, and excellent predicted reliability ratings, this SUV bests anything in its class.

HOLIDAY IN HEALDSBURG

A luxury wine experience provides an immersion into the culture behind Northern California’s viticulture

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

More than 25 years ago, husband-and-wife team Ken and Diane Wilson invested in a recently shuttered 100-year-old winery in Northern California. Without any formal training, the couple set out to fulfill a long-discussed dream – making their own wine. The result was an award-winning, full-bodied cabernet. Buoyed by the popularity of the varietal, the couple built an empire in the wine-growing region of Sonoma County over the next two decades. Today, what is now known as Wilson Artisan Wines is a family business, where Ken and Diane’s three adult children join their parents in all aspects of running it. Together, they and their partners oversee 650 total acres of planted vineyards as well as 11 different wine brands – Wilson Winery, Mazzocco Sonoma, deLorimier Winery, Matrix Winery, Pezzi King, St. Anne’s Crossing, Jaxon Keys, Greenwood Ridge, Rockpile Vineyards, and their newest addition, Coyote Sonoma, which includes two boutique inns, winery accommodations, and a taproom and wine bar called The Coyote Den. And each September, the family invites travelers to experience it all with them through the Wilson Family Experience. The three-night, four-day program, which takes place this year from Sept. 16 to 19, starts at $3,950 per couple. It includes all transportation, meals,

nightly accommodations in one of the Wilson’s properties (Grape Leaf Inn), and a behind-the-scenes insider’s view into every aspect of winemaking with the winemakers themselves. The Grape Leaf Inn, located in downtown Healdsburg, is not only a charming Victorian retreat, but sneaky cool. In addition to both rooms and suites, the inn has an in-house chef and a speakeasy accessible through a secret door behind a seemingly nondescript bookcase. Night one begins at the Grape Leaf Inn with a welcome reception hosted by the family. There, guests can enjoy small bites paired with a sampling of the wines they will experience during their journey. From there, guests will be whisked away to Soda Rock for a formal winemaker dinner. Each of the next three days, guests will experience a gourmet breakfast at the inn before being chauffeured to VIP experiences at the Wilson’s wineries and vineyard properties. On day one, for example, expect a custom tour of the Jaxon Keys estate where winemaker Antoine Favero will lead everyone through sampling brandies made on-site. After the tour, Favero hosts a catered, intimate lunch paired with wines on the winery crush pad in the middle of all the harvest action. Other highlights include an aroma seminar at Matrix Winery; a private, four-course dinner at celebrity chef Charlie Palmer’s nearby Dry Creek Kitchen; a chance to harvest grapes and compete in a grape-stomping competition; and other hands-on activities. The grand finale is, perhaps, the most fun. It starts by being formally “adopted” into the Wilson family with commemorative “adoption papers” and is followed by a trip to the Relish Culinary Academy. There, guests work in teams to dream up – and cook – culinary pairings with various Wilson wines. Learn more about the experience at www.wilsonartisanwines.com. So Scottsdale! August ‘19

AUSTRIA BOUND Discover architecture, art and historic charm in Vienna

BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

Austria brings to mind visions of Mozart, Alpine villages, imperial palaces, and the opera. The Central European country has all of that and so much more to offer visitors. Its capital city of Vienna – Wien in German – sits almost exactly at the center of Europe. Perched along the Danube River and filled with exquisite architecture, history and expansive green parks, it is the ideal place to begin exploring Austria.

See the City

PHOTOS BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

Vienna is a magical city, with architecture from the imperial time of the Habsburgs and traditional coffeehouses on every corner, both offset by the vibrancy of a modern city. The juxtaposition of old and new is everywhere. When you arrive, stop by the Tourist Information Office at the Main Station or the airport to pick up the Vienna City Card (www.viennacitycard.at), which gives you free travel on public transportation for up to 72 hours as well as discounts at various museums. One of the best ways to see Vienna is to book a tour with a certified tour guide (www.wien.info). There’s more to do than you can experience in a single visit, so this is a great opportunity to see the highlights before exploring on your own. Several tours are offered by the city, and it is also popular to take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the old city center – a UNESCO World Heritage Centre – with the guides offering fun commentary during the ride.

Exploring Classical Vienna Vienna’s Ringstrasse is a boulevard running more than 3 miles through the city’s center. A walk or drive around the Ringstrasse gives you a chance to see the Vienna State Opera, the Austrian Parliament Building, the Imperial Palace, the City Hall and more. One of the best ways to get a glimpse of everything along the Ringstrasse is to hop on the Vienna Ring Tram. The yellow tram follows the famed boulevard and takes about 25 minutes. Narration is available in English, and the ride is free with a Vienna City Card. With the tallest tower reaching nearly 450 feet, one of the most visible landmarks in Vienna is St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Built in the 12th century, visitors can tour inside the magnificent Gothic cathedral and even climb the 343 steps to the top of the tower. Another destination of near-overwhelming size is The Hofburg, the former imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty and now the residence and offices for Austria’s president. You can tour the Imperial Apartments, wander the gardens, and visit the Austrian National Library – Europe’s largest Baroque library – in one wing. Continue your explorations by taking a stroll to Michaelerplatz (St. Michael’s Square) in The Hofburg to see the famous white

Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School. There are often evening performances, but during most mornings you can watch the horses exercise. You don’t want to miss the MuseumsQuartier, or MQ, near the Imperial Palace. This complex includes the Leopold Museum, Kunsthalle Wien and the MUMOK – a museum of modern and contemporary art. These museums creatively show the old and new sides of Vienna. For some fuel while you’re in MQ, stop by Glacis Beisl and order a traditional schnitzel with beer. While the Habsburgs called Hofburg home, they spent their summers at Schonbrunn Palace, now easily accessible by tram (www.schoenbrunn.at). This magnificent Baroque estate has more than 1,400 rooms, many of which you can tour. Make sure to allow time to explore the beautiful, groomed gardens outside the palace.

Luxury Shopping Vienna offers bountiful shopping, especially in the area around Kohlmarkt, which is home to both Viennese luxury brands and international shops. Jewelry shops are especially popular, and you will see all that glitters as you amble along the pedestrian zone. Step into the marble and wood entrance of high-end jewelry store Schullin on Kohlmarkt to take a peek at some luxurious accessories. The Goldenes Quartier (www.goldenesquartier.com) is Old Vienna’s newest luxury shopping area. Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Armani and Prada are just a few of the shops you can find here.

Famed Coffee Vienna’s coffeehouses have been an institution since the 19th century. Once the meeting place for artists, writers and intellects, they remain the hot spots in town to relax and sip coffee. While the most famous include Cafe Central and Cafe Sperl, it can often be impossible to get a seat. You might want to try one of the smaller coffeehouses so you can soak up the atmosphere. For a coffee with cream similar to what you have in the U.S., order a grosser brauner. For something typically Viennese, try the melange with foamed milk or an einspanner with whipped cream and sugar icing.

Where to Stay For a luxury hotel option, try Hotel Altstadt, an easy walk to both MQ and Ringstrasse (www.altstadt.at). This boutique hotel, a member of Small Luxury Hotels, is in the middle of the vibrant arts district and no two rooms are the same. The entire hotel is filled with artwork, but the real treasure is the hotel breakfast – it has a reputation for being the best breakfast in Vienna. There is always something special coming from the kitchen, where the menu rotates daily and features sustainable, regional dishes.

POOLSIDE POURS Cocktails served on deck all summer long BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Wondering what you should sip while lounging poolside during your summer staycation? Here are some of the best summertime cocktails available at local resort pools through Labor Day, Sept. 2.

Parisian Rosé Crushed Cocktail The Hermosa Inn Designed to beat the heat while packing tons of flavor in every sip, this cheeky cocktail features an intoxicating blend of rosé wine, Luxardo maraschino cherry liqueur, pomegranate syrup, and fresh lemon juice. The kicker: It’s mixed with crushed ice and served in an actual pouch a la a Capri Sun. $12. www.hermosainn.com. Prickly Pear Margarita JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa Indigenous to Arizona, the prickly pear is one of the best ways to add a little desert to any drink. Offered on the rocks or frozen at the resort and all its pool bars, this prickly pear margarita has just the right amount of sweetness from the fruit and kick from the tequila. We recommend drinking it while floating down the lazy river. $15. www.jwdesertridge.com. Cocojito Fairmont Scottsdale Princess This take on the classic mojito is frozen and features a dizzyingly delicious combination of coconut rum, lime, mint and pineapple. It is available at all six resort pools, and one sip is sure to make you feel like you are in the tropics without ever leaving Scottsdale. $14. www.scottsdaleprincess.com. Mexican Mule Boulders Resort & Spa The Boulders gives the Moscow mule a south-of-the-border makeover by subbing the standard vodka for reposado tequila. It is served by the pitcher and easily pours enough for four. And yes, copper mugs come with it for an authentic mule experience. $70. www.theboulders.com.

The Rum Diary The Scott Resort & Spa This rum punch features both overproof and Jamaican rums as well as sweet grenadine and aromatic vanilla. It’s finished with lemon, Velvet Falernum and bitters to balance out the sweetness with both sour and citrus elements, resulting in a flavor that’s fruity, juicy, sweet and bitter in the best way possible. $12. www.thescottresort.com. Lava Flow The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch For those unfamiliar, a lava flow is a cross between two of summer’s most beloved cocktails: the pina colada and the strawberry daiquiri. Decadent and delicious, it starts by combining coconut rum with pina colada mix. Then, it’s topped with a freshly made strawberry puree that’s swirled in slowly for flavor and visual effect. $13. www.thescottsdaleresort.com. Peachy Passion Freeze Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia The combination of bright flavors in this cocktail makes it poolside perfection. Ultra refreshing, it features Belvedere Peach Nectar Vodka, peach puree, passion fruit juice, and a squeeze of lemon. Served frozen, it tastes of summer in a glass. $15. www.omnimontelucia.com. Aperol Spritz Frozen Cocktail Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows The Aperol spritz is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, and this frozen version of the Italian-inspired “it drink” of the moment uses traditional Aperol and sparkling wine. It adds a modern twist with a hint of gin and Kelvin Slush Co. Frosé Blanc, a white wine slushy mix. $12. www.andazscottsdale.com.

Kasai Asian Grill, founded by Mike Russello and Patrick King, might feel familiar. In 2000, Russello and King were the original brains behind Sapporo Scottsdale. The team repurchased the space in 2018, reimagining it as Kasai. Of special note are the signature sushi offerings the culinary team created as part of the menu revamp, including the light, refreshing Tropical Island Roll ($14). This carb-conscious roll – there’s no rice – features blue fin tuna, housemade lump crab mix, avocado and mango, and is rolled with nori (seaweed). The roll is plated with seasonal greens as well as wasabi mayo, eel sauce, garlic butter and masago, resulting in umami in every bite. Kasai Asian Grill, 14344 N. MUDDLED MASTERPIECE The Thai Basil Mojito at Malee’s Thai Bistro is a quintessential summertime refresher

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

For more than 30 years, Malee’s Thai Bistro has been a Scottsdale mainstay. “The key to our success – other than amazingly loyal patrons and staff – has been our ability to infuse bright, explosive flavors into everything on our menu, including our cocktail program,” says Oi Janboonruang, the bar manager at Malee’s. The cocktail menu includes both traditional options as well as a handful of Asianinspired twists on the norm. The Thai Basil Mojito ($10), for example, is a spin on the beloved Cuban muddled drink. It is offered both frozen and on the rocks. “Before building either, our team makes its own simple syrup by reducing sugar with lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves, both key ingredients in Thai cooking as well as other Southeast Asian cuisines,” Janboonruang says. “The result is sweet but with herbaceous notes and intense citrus zest.” To make the frozen version, the syrup is combined in a blender with Bacardi White Rum, ice and both sweet Thai basil and mint leaves. Then, it’s topped off with soda water. It is served in a hurricane glass with a lime wheel and sprig of the basil. “For the rocks version, we start by muddling the sweet Thai basil and mint leaves in a mixing glass, then add all of the same ingredients and shake before serving in a hurricane glass over ice with the same garnishes,” Janboonruang says. According to Janboonruang, the basil gives the mojito a kick of spice and a hint of anise, which complements the ultra-refreshing mint and lemongrass elements and tempers the sweeter notes in the syrup without overpowering the rum. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Carlos Garcia of Tommy Bahama Restaurant, Bar & Store

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Carlos Garcia is the executive chef of Tommy Bahama Restaurant, Bar & Store, specializing in eclectic, island-inspired fare that’s as refreshing as it is tasty – especially during the summer.

What inspired you to cook? I was born in Aguascalientes, a small Mexican state. As a child, I loved visiting the mercado, which is akin to a farmers market, with my grandma. The mercado, coupled with my mother’s and grandmother’s talents in the kitchen, fueled my passion for food. How did you make your way to the United States? My mother, a California native, was diagnosed with scleroderma, an autoimmune disease, when I was 12. We moved to California soon after the diagnosis to take advantage of the medical care there. Tell us about your education and early chef experience. I worked as a line cook in high school. After graduating in 1994 and getting a bit more experience, I was accepted into the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College to study culinary arts. As I approached graduation in 1999, I took on my first major kitchen position at the then-new Gordon Biersch in Orange County. Within a year, I was named sous chef. How did you end up in Arizona? I began working with Yard House in 2002, and they relocated me here to open locations in Desert Ridge and Scottsdale in the mid-2000s as executive chef. I would eventually transition into fine dining, taking a chef position at Morton’s The Steakhouse at Kierland Commons in 2010. While there, I happened to stop by Tommy Bahama one day. It sounds odd, but I knew immediately it was my destiny. Was Tommy Bahama next? First, I briefly relocated to California to help care for my mom in 2013. There, I took on an executive chef position at Paul Martin’s American Grill. When they announced plans to open in Scottsdale in 2014, I jumped at the chance to come back. Within months of the move, the executive chef role at Tommy Bahama opened. The rest is history. What would we be surprised to know about you? I play the piano, tuba and saxophone! Luci’s at the Orchard, Luci’s Healthy Marketplace, and its newest location – Luci’s at The Grove in Central Scottsdale – have extensive smoothie and juice menus as well as acai and protein-packed bowl options. There’s even a build-your-own juice menu available with nutrient-rich ingredients including apples, cantaloupe, carrots, kale, spinach, parsley, mint, ginger and much more. Don’t miss the Acai Superfood Bowl with chilled acai, organic fruits and hemp granola. www.lucisurbanconcepts.com.

Berry Divine Acai Bowls

Divine doesn’t even begin to describe this healthy eatery, which was founded in Sedona before expanding to the Valley. The menu is based on 12 ingredients, each with vitamins, nutrients and healing properties: acai, guarana, blueberries, strawberries, dark chocolate, bee pollen, chia seeds, goji berries, flaxseed, spinach, hemp seed and kale. Signature bowls are offered two ways: A blended bowl option where the acai is blended with frozen fruits and a nondairy milk or juice, or a soft serve option, which is an organic frozen blend of acai, apple juice, beet juice, lemon juice and cane sugar. Both are topped with fruit, granola, honey and other healthy ingredients. There are also eight smoothies, all made using frozen acai instead of ice. www.berrydivineacai.com.

Brunch Cafe

This newly opened eatery focused on breakfast, brunch and lunch features smoothies, coldpressed juices, and a fruit-filled berry bowl. Each of its smoothies is made with organic fresh fruit and low-fat vanilla yogurt. The cold-pressed juice menu has four creatively named offerings including: Sonny & Cheer with pineapple, lemon, orange and turmeric; Root Root Baby with ginger, carrot, celery and apple; We’ve Got the Beet with beets, apple, lemon and carrot; and Kale Yeah with kale, cucumber, celery and ginger. www.brunchcafe.com.

Ironwood American Kitchen at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Open to resort guests and locals alike, Ironwood celebrates American cuisine while bringing Arizona agriculture to the forefront as often as possible. The restaurant partners with farmers and artisans across Arizona to ensure it is offering each season’s finest local and organic produce, dairy and beverages. This is especially evident on the breakfast menu, offered daily until 10:30 a.m. and featuring a heavenly take on an acai bowl with fresh local blueberries, sundried fruit, pistachios, freezedried strawberries, and lime posset, which

Juby True

As a spinoff of True Food Kitchen, Juby True’s name is actually short for “Juice by True Food.” As such, its unique recipes balance flavor and nutrients made from the season’s ripest ingredients. In fact, each 16-ounce bottle of juice contains 5 to 7 pounds of raw, 100 percent organic produce that is cold-pressed and never pasteurized. In addition to juices, there is a menu of vitamin-rich smoothies. Juby True also offers optional add-ons including chia seeds, organic yogurt, flaxseeds, coconut oil, almond butter, hemp protein, and pea protein. www.jubytrue.com.

Kaleidoscope Juice

is a silky, light cream. There is also a daily cold-pressed juice option that changes weekly based on local fruit selections and a smoothie menu with berry, kale and peanut butter banana options. www.scottsdaleprincess.com.

A local success story, Kaleidoscope Juice began as a venture fueled by a $6,000 grant from the Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative at Arizona State University and was founded by a then-student at the school, Alexandra Maw. Her initial goal was to develop a brand offering clean, handcrafted items that tasted as good as they made one feel. The result: A product line that now features 90 different items, all of which are natural and organic. Among the most popular offerings are the acai and pitaya bowls, each blended with bananas, blueberries, raspberries, almond butter, coconut oil, cinnamon and coconut water; smoothies with ingredients including collagen, cacao, avocado and goji berries; and cold-pressed juices with spinach, kale, cucumber, broccoli, celery, beets, pears and more. www.kaleidoscope.love.

Nekter Juice Bar

Nekter operates under ingredient transparency by eliminating hidden fillers, unnecessary sugars, processed ingredients, and artificial flavors from its menu of made-to-order juices, smoothies and acai bowls. Its antioxidant-packed acai bowls are naturally sweetened with fruit and topped with superfood add-ons like goji berries, cacao nibs and hemp hearts, while the smoothies feature energizing, immunity-boosting ingredients blended with coconut water or housemade cashew milk. Six juices address a variety of health needs, including increased energy (try The Buzz) or detoxification (try the Green Apple Detox). New to juicing? Ease into it with a fusion blend, a cross between a juice and a smoothie that provides an entire day’s serving of fruits and veggies. www.nekterjuicebar.com.

True Food Kitchen

True Food Kitchen’s philosophy, spearheaded by founder Dr. Andrew Weil, is rooted in the notion that food should make you feel better, not worse. Since its opening more than 10 years ago, True Food has done just that, focusing its menu on an anti-inflammatory diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats. This notion is clear in its brunch selections, notably several smoothies and juices, including a kale and coconut option bursting with the flavors of

AUTHENTIC FLAIR Agave del Scottsdale cooks up Mexico City cuisine

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Mexico City, Mexico’s capital and the oldest capital city in the Americas, boasts flavors and ingredients as rich as its 500year history. “Our ownership group’s ancestors are from different regions in Mexico including the Yucatan, Mazatlan, Puebla and Veracruz, so we wanted to showcase Mexican cuisine by bringing our largest city’s culture to Scottsdale,” said Hector Soto, general manager of Agave del Scottsdale, which opened in June in McCormick Ranch’s Mercado del Lago plaza. “Our fully renovated dining room and unique menu will redefine what Phoenicians know of as high-end, authentic Mexican cuisine.” Massive wooden doors imported from Mexico welcome guests as they enter the 2,500-square-foot space. Garage doors over the bar provide an open-air dining experience, pending the weather. “Our dining room is tough to forget,” Soto says. “It features bright colors, including glistening pink chandeliers and a custom-made copper-topped bar that will catch diners’ eyes.” There are also large sliding glass doors that open to the spacious patio,

providing additional space to enjoy lunch, a happy hour drink, or dinner. The menu is as vibrant as the decor and includes traditional mole, modern seafood and classic comfort dishes all made from scratch. Among the biggest standouts on the menu are the four ceviche options; the fresh Chilean sea bass served with a sophisticated pasila chile sauce; and the prime filet mignon, which is topped with a creamy corn truffle sauce and served with potatoes as well as a 48-hour mole based on recipes passed down through several generations. The cocktail menu is similarly sizeable and inspired by Central America. It has a variety of margaritas and tequila-based drinks using fresh-squeezed juices and fruits. “We offer our margaritas traditional as well as with infusions of watermelon, spicy cucumber, kiwi or even hibiscus,” Soto says. “There is also our tequila library, which currently features more than 100 varieties of the popular agave spirit. We also have a tequila cart, which is a mobile extension of the library that delivers tableside service of our extra anejo selections.” Agave also boasts both tequila and mezcal tasting flights, a menu of gin-inspired cocktails, beer and wine. Agave del Scottsdale is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Agave brings in a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 8 p.m. Brunch is offered on weekends from 9 a.m. to noon, and happy hour occurs daily from 3 to 6 p.m. During happy hour, guests can enjoy small bites and select entrees including enchiladas, burritos and even a Mexicaninspired burger for less than $10. There are also $4 beers and $6 margaritas, sangrias, well cocktails, and wines available. Agave del Scottsdale, 8390 E. Via de Ventura Blvd., Scottsdale; 480.248.6901; www.agavedelscottsdale.com.
