Parisian

Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon

J

o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We’ve even got our own massage therapist. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

SS_14_27IN_Jan16.indd 15

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

ed note

I

t’s that time of year where our focus often takes a fresh direction. At times it may seem trite as many of us vow to make certain changes or improvements, and yet, there’s something highly symbolic about the turning of a calendar year. As we say farewell to the previous year’s happenings, the New Year breathes new life into us with new projects and new goals; perhaps a renewed commitment to a healthier lifestyle or finally doing that ‘thing’ (and we all have one!) you’ve always dreamed of doing. So, welcome to 2016! And welcome to our January issue, which is filled with lots of new. Two new openings include a confectionary (page 130) and a Western-inspired venue (page 74), while the Hotel Valley Ho reveals a chic update (page 60). A beloved Valley restaurant, Postino WineCafe, will open two Scottsdale locations early this year; read about the restaurant’s visionaries, Upward Projects, on page 29. Then, there are those whose careers are focused on perfecting the art of beautiful new beginnings, that of planning a wedding (page 48). And, of course, it simply wouldn’t be January in Scottsdale without car collector auctions. In fact, on our cover this month is Frankie Muniz (page 44). The former “Malcolm in the Middle” star, who shares with us his varied interests and current projects, is passionate about cars – he’s even auctioning the first car he ever bought at Barrett-Jackson. With all of the new, who can deny that most of us also aim to be a bit healthier at the turn of the year? We’ve got you covered there, too, with fun fitness places to try (page 72), kitchen gadgets to up your healthy cooking game (page 82), skinny cocktails to sip (page 124), and a supercool and convenient way to eat healthier (page 58). Plus, check out how to liven up your look with eye-catching new bling (page 88) and surefire ways to give your beauty regimen a total refresh (page 90). As 2016 unfolds, new discoveries await – and perhaps even a new chapter in which to write whatever story you choose!

GROWING NEIGHBORHOODS ONE RESTAURANT AT A TIME

Upward Projects develops culinary concepts with community in mind BY GRETCHEN PAHIA

ervice with smile means so much more to the folks behind Upward Projects – it means great food and drink, an inviting atmosphere and above all, a sense of community. “We create restaurants that are meant to inspire and that are connected to the communities in which they serve,” says co-founder Craig DeMarco. Craig and Kris DeMarco, alongside Lauren and Wyatt Bailey, are the brainchildren of Upward Projects, the company behind such Valley restaurants as Postino WineCafe, Federal Pizza, Windsor, Churn and Joyride Taco House.

up close “We built a foundation on historically relevant buildings that are integral to the neighborhoods they surround,” DeMarco says. He adds that it is their hallmark to pair delicious food with local ingredients, boutique beverage programs and a warm, friendly culture that brings everyone together. Upward Projects, which has been in business for 15 years, is continuously growing, and in turn, helping communities thrive. Now, the company has set its sights on two areas in Scottsdale and is gearing up to open two new Postino locations – one at Kierland Commons in the old Soma Lingerie space and another at Highland Avenue and Scottsdale Road (with projected openings in February and March, respectively). “We drove around for years looking for something to repurpose, and a large portion of our customers are in that area,” Lauren Bailey says. The team adds that they searched for several years to nab this particular piece of property (the Highland location). The Bailey’s drove by the property about five years ago, and after fervently trying to get a deal done to take over the space, they were unable to do so at the time. Fast-forward to now, and the stars finally aligned this time around, allowing them to get the building they wanted, and the team couldn’t be more excited about the future ahead. “People are excited to see that it’s happening,” DeMarco says. “Customers have been asking for it and we can’t wait.” When you talk about all of the amazing restaurant concepts owned and operated by Upward Projects, it isn’t hard to see how they would have difficulty choosing a favorite. “Postino is what brought the Bailey’s and DeMarco’s together, so it has a special place in my heart, but they are all amazing,” DeMarco says. Lauren Bailey adds that each restaurant is very special in its own right. “Windsor is so special; that building is amazing. Joyride is where we got to take some risks we hadn’t before, Churn was super exciting, and ice cream is such a cool and fun idea that brings together any neighborhood. And, of course, Federal Pizza is just such a cool concept.”

A Community Focus For Upward Projects, it isn’t just about making money. While they enjoy doing that, of course, at the end of the day it isn’t why they do what they do. The team at Upward Projects feels like they have a higher purpose in the wonderful communities where they choose to plant restaurant roots, and that purpose is to go out into these communities and build with them in mind. While Postino is the company’s core project and the one that is currently expanding, it isn’t the only focal point for the team. The group is always looking toward the future. “We just built a great place [Postino] in Denver, and we are always looking for unique and special projects,” DeMarco says. The team is always up for a challenge and taking on the next “it” community. According to Bailey, “We really like to find the next neighborhood and then have others follow us to see what we’re doing, see us tap into the next community. We’re always looking for something

SO SCOTTSDALE! |

SS_28_31Trendsetter_Jan16.indd 30

awesome and building that next great concept.” The Upward Projects team believes the Valley will continue to see their concepts evolve and grow over the next few years. At the heart of that sentiment, the team feels a responsibility to put out new eateries for the community – and they also feel very blessed to do so. According to DeMarco and Bailey, there is nothing else they would rather be doing with their time than what they are accomplishing with their team right now. “We are just so excited to get to run down to our office on Central Avenue every day and participate with this team, this amazing team who genuinely cares about the business,” DeMarco says. “And, we’re really excited to see how things grow in Scottsdale, too. Meeting the folks there, feeling the atmosphere, and getting imbedded in that community, and overall, seeing how it grows.” Visit www.upwardprojects.com to stay up-to-date with Upward Projects’ exciting (and delicious) ventures.

STRIKING A CHORD

Musician Julia Grayling lays her heart out onstage BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

A

musician tells a story that is only heard. A great musician tells a story that is both heard and felt. Julia Grayling is the latter. “I write about very personal life experiences and have never been afraid to be brutally honest in my lyrics,” she says. Grayling, a native Chicagoan, has been playing guitar and singing ever since her first performance at age 14. “I wasn’t nervous on that night,” she recalls. “The stage is, without a doubt, my happy place.” Grayling’s passion for music blossomed at an even earlier age. “I started writing songs before I could even hold a guitar,” she admits. Her father, also a musician, taught her the first song she ever learned on the guitar. “My family always encourages me to keep moving forward and to never give up. I’m very lucky to have that.” Grayling’s newest album, “Talking Crazy,” is a creative collaboration between her and Grammy Award-winning producer James Sanger. “My new album is an open diary of my thoughts and feelings. I think people will really get to know who I am, not only as an artist but also as a person, while listening to the songs.” Visit www.juliagrayling.com to learn more, and catch her performing regularly at The Vig McCormick Ranch, JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa and Paradise Lounge.

Etc.

What do you love most about being a musician? I think writing has always been my first love, but performing live is easily the most exciting thing I’ll ever do in my life. I also love it when people tell me they can relate to something I’ve written. Whether they laugh or cry, it doesn’t matter; if they felt something, then I succeeded. Did growing up in Chicago inspire you as a budding artist? Chicago inspired everything I am. It is where I fell in love with music, learned to play guitar and learned to write. Had I not grown up there, I possibly would not have written some of the songs I still play today. The “Shallow Heart” music video was just released. Are you planning to release more videos from the album? I’m very happy with the video. I filmed, directed and edited it myself, which is not that easy to do, but it is fun! I’ve got many more ideas for other songs off the album and will definitely put my visions to work. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

A HEART OF SERVICE

Vicki Mayo is on a mission to transform government while changing children’s lives BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

V

icki Mayo’s mission is to make a difference in people’s lives – and boy, has she. As the chief transformation officer (CTO) at the Arizona Department of Economic Security, Mayo’s focus is on transforming government by teaching new business skills, problem-solving and creating a standard work process. Her tactics help frustrated taxpayers see hope. “Having the ability to show people there is a way to get things done easier, faster and cheaper, and then seeing them get excited about it, is exciting,” she says. Originally from the South and raised in Sedona, Mayo now calls Scottsdale home. Her helping hand not only extends to Valley taxpayers but also to foster children. This passion for child welfare developed in her first job at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Sedona. “People would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I would say, ‘I want to help children.’” With more than 15 years of experience in child welfare, Mayo has helped countless children rediscover hope and new beginnings. In fact, she adopted two abandoned boys the day she graduated college. “I went and picked up the boys from their apartment, and just like that, I became an instant mom.” Truly, Mayo is a woman of many roles, each of which requires one thing that few acquire – pure loving kindness.

Etc.

Do you ever welcome foster children into your home or care for them until a permanent placement can be made? Currently, we have our hands full with our own two little biological ones. My daughter is four and my son is seven. My older adopted kids are 24 and 25. We are very close. How do you do it all? It has its moments! I am big on lists to keep organized, but really, at the end of the day, it’s about priorities. My kids and my family are my first priority. After that, I do my best to be very efficient and fit everything in! What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I spend time with my kids! I also enjoy gardening and am a voracious reader. My friends will tell you that I spend a lot of time making and caning jams and jellies. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

FASHIONABLE FUSIONS Restaurateur Rupesh Shetty cooks up a mix of elegance and sophistication BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

upesh Shetty, founder of a new Gainey Ranch restaurant Inde Fusion, knows a thing or two about style. With a closet full of Hugo Boss, Diesel and a tuxedo or two, the restaurateur is ready to shine just about anywhere he goes. “I am a big fan of sophistication and elegance. To put it simply, you have to dress the part, and when I am at work, I am representing not only myself but the brand and the restaurant,” Shetty says. Inde Fusion, scheduled for a Jan. 4 opening at press time, will deliver a sophisticated, upscale dining experience with Indian-infused flavors spanning anything from American to Italian to Asian fare – or whatever inspires Shetty and Chef. “It’s a place you can come to have a good meal and good conversation, and enjoy some great service,” adds Shetty. Previously, Shetty spent more than 20 years in hospitality management, including eight years with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. And, restaurants are in his blood; his father is a restaurateur in Mumbai where Shetty was raised. Shetty does get to enjoy some occasional time off. “If I go out to dinner with family or friends, you are still likely to find me wearing Diesel or Seven jeans, a button-down shirt and dress-appropriate shoes. I want to make sure my style is reflected at all times.” Learn more about the restaurant and Shetty at www.indefusion.com. Who are your fashion inspirations? I love fitted Hugo Boss suits and Prada sunglasses. No one rocks a suit better than Daniel Craig as James Bond. What do you like to do for fun? I am usually always at home hanging out with my 8-year-old son, Donovan. We love to travel as a family. My wife, Allison, and I also enjoy dining out and going to movies. What type of dishes will you offer at Inde Fusion? Fusion-style dishes inspired and influenced by Indian cuisine. For example, Executive Chef Michel Cottabarren created a pumpkin cashew nut ravioli served with an Indian-spiced, tomato-based sauce drawn with butter and cream (so, Indian-Italian Fusion).

S DRESSING THE PART

Boutique owner Amy Yount makes fashion part of her daily life BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

tyle maven Amy Yount definitely knows what she’s talking about when it comes to fashion trends and staying upto-date with the latest styles. As the owner of Amy, Inc., a clothing boutique in Old Town Scottsdale, the fashionista is certain to keep on top of the latest looks. This winter season, Yount says she gravitates toward darker colors and a monochromatic look layered with texture, perhaps paired with a statement jacket and ripped jeans. Yount also likes to mix in her feminine, girly side by sporting a fuller skirt or layered dress, adding some pizazz with a colorful jacket or an edgier leather accessorty. “As I’m getting older, I’m staying away from white and cream, and I tend to focus more on gray and black,” says Yount. While she doesn’t have a go-to color, Yount does say this season she’s focused much of her wardrobe on wine-colored items, with a pair of Sergio Rossi pumps and a Chloé shoulder bag that are both versatile enough for any occasion. What are some of the biggest trends you see coming in fashion for 2016? A muted color palette; lots of white, flouncy skirts; lace-up tops and dresses; ’70s-inspired looks; and lots of suede, especially in footwear. What do you like to do with your downtime when you aren’t running the store? Hop out of town and give my undivided attention to my adorable Royal Frenchel (French bulldog/Cavalier King Charles spaniel mix) named George. If you could take only three of your favorite clothing items with you on a deserted island, what would they be? My Camilla button-front kaftan, my black-and-white Lauren Moshi peace and love T-shirt, and my Tibi rose gold tulip front gown.

FRANKIE MUNIZ SHARES HIS ZEST FOR CARS AND LIFE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA

F

rankie Muniz is a man of many trades. Known for his television and movie roles, the Scottsdale resident is also a drummer, former race car driver and car aficionado. In fact, he’s extremely passionate when it comes to all things car-related. “I’ve always loved cars and have always had a crazy passion for them,” Muniz says.

Muniz, who turned 30 in December, says he has always been a car fanatic. “The only toys I wanted when I was a kid were remote-controlled cars or matchbox cars, anything car related basically.” Muniz adds when he was finally old enough to get his driver’s license, his love for cars turned from fantasy into reality. And now, that reality is one Muniz is sharing at Barrett-Jackson this month, as he will be auctioning his own 1995 Jetta from the original “The Fast and the Furious” film. Beyond being made famous by this film, Muniz’s Jetta was the first car he ever bought, so it holds a special place in his heart – and will surely continue to do so long after the next owner claims it. Muniz also has a Ford Explorer concept car which was built for the SEMA Show, a Kia K900 and a 1965 Daytona replica that he purchased at Barrett-Jackson a few years ago. “That car [the 1965 Daytona replica] is super fun to drive. It’s fast and loud and everyone stops to look, point and take pictures,” Muniz says.

Despite all of his cars, Muniz does not consider himself a collector in the sense that he purchases cars to merely store them. “I guess you can say the Jetta from “The Fast and the Furious” was a car I collected, but I didn’t buy it with that intention,” Muniz says. When he purchased the Jetta, Muniz says it didn’t sit in a garage somewhere just waiting to be turned around and sold. “I drove it to the grocery store, I drove it to the mall, I went on dates. I didn’t buy it to let it sit. I like my cars, and I drive them all.” For Muniz, this love of cars extended beyond owning them; he also raced them. “I did it professionally for five years until I got hurt at the end of the 2009 season,” Muniz says. “By the time I was able to get back out there behind the wheel, I was more focused on doing other things. I do miss it, and I still love watching racing.” So, what does an auto admirer and former professional race car driver dream of owning? Muniz says what he likes to drive has evolved over the years – going from super fast sports cars to ones that put comfort and style first. That being

said, power is still an important carbuying consideration. “I really like the Mercedes E63. People don’t expect it to be that fast, and it still has plenty of room and space.” The Pagani Zonda also top Muniz’s list. When asked if he has his eyes on a particular vehicle at this year’s BarrettJackson auction, he laughs. “I’m notorious for bidding on a lot of cars. I’m never looking for specific things – just anything with four wheels and steering wheel!”

Acting Roots

Many people know Muniz from his first major break on television, starring as the lead character, Malcolm, on the sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle.” When asked about still being associated with such an iconic show, Muniz was quick to respond. “It’s one of those things, like when you do anything in your life, and you’re ‘in’ it, it’s just your life. It’s great and you enjoy it, but you don’t think about how amazing of an opportunity it is to be part of something until you step away from it.” The show, which ran from 2000-2006, followed the lives of a family of six and stole the hearts of viewers. “I think of the experience and the people I met, and how people still come up to me and say they loved it. It’s really cool that people enjoyed the show. We put in a lot of work into it, and looking back at it now, I’m a lot more appreciative of the opportunity.” Muniz is also very thankful for the relationships he made on the show, noting that he still stays in contact with Bryan Cranston, who played his father. “He is such an amazing guy and friend. He makes sure to reach out to me monthly to see how I’m doing, and he supports me. I’m happy to have a good friend in him.” Today, though, Muniz is busy doing other acting projects. The only one he can currently talk about is a movie he recently filmed at Big Surf Waterpark, right here in the Valley. It’s called, “Another Day in

“I DROVE IT TO THE GROCERY STORE, I DROVE IT TO THE MALL, I WENT ON DATES. I DIDN’T BUY IT TO LET IT SIT. I LIKE MY CARS, AND I DRIVE THEM ALL.”

JANUARY 2016 |

SS_44_47FrankieCover_Jan16.indd 47

47

Paradise.” “It was a blast to film,” Muniz says. “It was nice to be home and get to film something here.”

Music and More

Over the last few years, it hasn’t just been acting and racing that kept Muniz on the move; he was also very active on the music scene for several years as a drummer for the band Kingsfoil. “I loved that band and was a fan before I joined. So, it was so cool to play drums for a band I joined as a fan,” Muniz says. However, a busy touring schedule and being on the road all the time made it difficult to do the other things Muniz was also focusing on; his last stage show with Kingsfoil was Feb. 7, 2014. Still, the music industry is very much a part of Muniz’s life, just in a different way. Muniz says he is starting to work with a few bands from a management perspective and getting involved with those he thinks have a lot of potential. “When I was in the band, I handled the business and management side. I loved performing but also loved the behind-the-scenes stuff, and it’s hard to do both at the same time. So, I’ll still be involved in the music scene but just not onstage.” With Muniz’s many interests and pursuits, one might wonder what prompted him to settle down in Scottsdale eight years ago, in 2008. The answer is pretty simple. “You know, you have those moments where you sit back and think, ‘Where do I want to go.’ I’d been to the area for different events and liked it. But the real reason is that I used to get “Dream Homes Magazine” sent to my home in L.A. and some of the pages featured homes in Scottsdale. The only houses I really liked were those in Scottsdale,” Muniz says. “It was honestly a spur of the moment decision. I came out here one day and bought a house, and it was the best decision I ever made. I love it here and know I’ll live here for the rest of my life.”

It’s no secret that nearly every little girl dreams about the happiest day of her life – her wedding day. She envisions floral arrangements, color schemes and, of course, the white dress. Amina Garrison and Whitney Lewis Years as wedding planners: 10 Company: Some Like It Classic - Wedding Design (www.somelikeitclassic.com) Top venues to get married at in the Valley: We think these places consistently provide a five-star experience: Four Seasons Resort, Arizona Biltmore, Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa, Royal Palms Resort and Spa, Hyatt at Gainey Ranch, The Country Club at DC Ranch "It" colors for 2016: Peaches, pinks, Pantone 2016 rose quartz, soft purples – yes please! We are also loving gray, navy or black for go-to classics, and we think yellow is going to be the color of the year to wear as a guest. Most enticing invitations: The Pretty Paperie, The Event Essentials, Celebrations in Paper and idieh design. These are just a few of the great paper vendors we work with. Bridal boutique(s) or store(s): Mariée Bridal, Destiny's Bride Favorite place for cake or desserts: Heartsweet Cakes, Ruze Cake House, Let Them Eat Cake, Classic Cakes and Confections Loved local band or DJ: The Instant Classics, Desert House Productions, Got You Covered Suggested videographer(s): Serendipity Cinematography and eMotion Cinematography Most unique touch: “Never-beforeseen” is the mantra in our company. We love the quote, "Go big or go home!" Suspended ceiling decor is luxe; we recently did a 15-by-15-foot overhead bar chandelier made of flowers for the creator of Groupon. Sunday brunch locale: Stay on property if you're at a resort, or having brunch at a nearby family home is always a nice touch. Why do you think people choose Arizona for their nuptials? Eighty percent of our clients are destination brides or grew up here; the desert is stunning, and the weather is beautiful and fairly predictable.

Stephanie Antoinette Years as a wedding planner: I’ve been an event planner for about 10 years, starting in corporate. I have been doing weddings since 2012. Company: Events By Stephanie Antoinette (www.eventsbystephanieantoinette.com) Favorite florist(s): Butterfly Petals, Flower Bar, Brady’s Floral Gallery and The Flower Studio. Most enticing invitations: Victoria York with Vee Creative is my go-to girl for invitations and paper products! Bridal boutique(s) or store(s): BHLDN (Anthropologie’s wedding brand), Rent the Runway, Mariée Bridal Bridal and Destiny’s Bridal are some of my favorites. Best rehearsal dinner spots: Eddie’s House in Old Town Scottsdale is a family favorite! It’s actually where I had my own rehearsal dinner. Favorite location for engagement photos: Some of the best engagement shoots I’ve seen have been done in their own kitchen. I also like to see shoots at places like Sugar Bowl or ice cream parlors! Top two photographers: Andrew Jade Photography and Katrina Wallace Photographers if I can only pick two. Most unique touch: One of my grooms had a dining table made for his bride as a wedding gift – it had both of their names engraved on the legs. He told me about the table the night before the wedding and really wanted to incorporate this into their wedding somehow, so I decided to use this as their cake table! So, the bride and groom got to share their very first piece of cake as husband and wife at the table they will be dining at for years to come! Craziest thing you’ve done to save the day: We had a wedding at a private estate years ago where we rented a restroom trailer. A little girl had accidentally locked herself in the restroom and couldn’t get out. Her mother was crying, and we couldn’t get ahold of the trailer owner, so I pulled a bobby pin out of my hair and was able to the pick the lock and get the little girl out! SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Ashley Gain Richardson Years as a wedding planner: Five Company: Ashley Gain Weddings (www.ashleygain.com) "It" colors for 2016: Blue, pink, Marsala and green. While it’s not a “color,” exposed woods in natural stains. Favorite florist(s): I stay very focused on who the bride is and then pick the designer that is best going to fit her vision of the day. My top picks of fabulous work by outstanding designers would be Petal Pusher, The Flower Studio, Carte Blanche Design and Sarah’s Garden Wedding Floral & Styling. Favorite place for cake or desserts: As a girl with quite the sweet tooth, it’s very hard not to list 15. My favorites are a BakeShop, Classic Cakes and Confections, and Ruze Cake House. Best rehearsal dinner spots: For the foodie Monarch Café, for the “Arizona” western experience Mummy Mountain Cookout at Camelback Inn or Crown P Corral at the Fairmont Princess, for a stunning backdrop and ambience El Chorro. Favorite location for engagement photos: Somewhere that is special and unique to the bride and groom that is not exactly like their wedding day. They are about to have 1,000 wedding photos, so I suggest they do something a little different! Suggested videographer(s): Serendipity Cinematography, Bright Bokeh, Everly Films and NoBox Films Preferred hair and makeup artist or salon: Hire me and you can see. This is my secret weapon so I can’t share! Sunday brunch locale: My advice for a good morning-after mimosa with your guests is to have it at the hotel where the majority of your guests stayed during the weekend. Make it easily accessible, so you get more quality time in with your loved ones! Must-have item(s) in your wedding day kit: Safety pins, needle and thread, and breath mints. We need them at every single wedding!

Sandy Walker Years as a wedding planner: 11 Company: In Awe Weddings and Events (www.inaweweddings.com) Top venues to get married at in the Valley: The Valley has so many great venues, but so many couples are choosing private homes. They love the intimacy and privacy that it brings. “It” colors for 2016: Shades of blue, rose quartz and peach echo. The trend is typically set by the Pantone color palettes. Bridal boutique(s) or store(s): Lillian Lottie Favorite place for cake or desserts: Paula Jacqueline Cakes and Pastries Best rehearsal dinner spots: Cantina Laredo Loved local band or DJ: Mancini Entertainment Favorite location for engagement photos: Downtown Phoenix Preferred hair and makeup artist or salon: Allison Pynn Most unique touch: I own a lot of wedding decor that I allow my couples to use at no charge. It gives them an opportunity to glam it up a bit without any added expense. Why do you think people choose Arizona for their nuptials? The beautiful weather and perfect backdrop! Must-have item(s) in your wedding day kit: Safety pins. I pretty much pull those out for some needed repair at every wedding. Craziest thing you’ve done to save the day when something went wrong: Recently the videographers were in a car accident on the way to the wedding so they obviously didn’t make it. I had one hour to find a videographer and get them to the venue. We ended up delaying the ceremony for 30 minutes, but the guests chatted and didn’t seem to mind at all once the officiant explained the situation. Favorite part of a wedding: Seeing how happy the couple is once they have just been pronounced husband and wife and watching them head back down the aisle – so awesome! SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Michelle Scarzone Years as a wedding planner: 20+ years in the industry, 10 of those years planning weddings. I worked my way through the trenches, so to speak. Company: Simply Refined Events and Prep2wed, a self-planning workshop for do-it-yourself brides. (www.simplyrefinedevents.com) Favorite florist(s): Jan Dekker Designs because she is amazing both as a professional and as a friend. Petal Pusher – Tamara and Matt – are outstanding! Most enticing invitation company: Celebration in Papers – Renee is the BEST! Loved local band or DJ: The Hamptons (a band) is one of my faves! Favorite location for engagement photos: Stagecoach Pass in Cave Creek (lots of texture) or DC Ranch Marketplace Suggested videographer(s): Amoroma Productions (Daniel) and Esthetics In Motion – both are great to work with. Top two photographers: This is tough – there are so many amazing ones to choose from in the area. Image-Industry (Scott Foust) and Rachel Solomon Photography. Why do you think people choose Arizona for their nuptials? Arizona has so much to offer guests and their families: beautiful weather, beautiful scenery and LOTS of activities! Craziest thing you’ve done to save the day when something went wrong: I’m not sure how crazy this may sound, but it seems as if the guys never try their suits on prior to the wedding. One wedding, we literally had to play “Musical Suits” to find out which one fit the groom best! In the end, I took out three hems and cut a vest right down the back so a groomsman could button it in front. I safety pinned the loose ends to his shirt, put his jacket on and sent him on his way. Favorite part of a wedding: Just before the bride is getting ready to walk down the aisle, the last moment and exchange of words with her dad, mom or whoever is escorting her. It’s a moment in which I am privileged to witness as they say “Okay, let’s do this,” and off they go! JANUARY 2016 |

EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

Dr. Andrew Wolin brings over 20 years of experience in using patient’s own fat to sculpt and contour faces, breasts and bodies

LIPS AND LINES

So... you’ re looking in the magnifying mirror as you put on your eyeshadow, your mascara and your cheek foundation and now you get a good look at your lips. A gasp of disbelief permeates the atmosphere. “ Where did those lines come from...I didn’t see them there last week.. how will I ever hide the grooves and lines with my lip liner and lipstick? At the Wolin Plastic Surgery Center, Dr Andrew Wolin has found multiple solutions to the “lips and LInes” dilemma. For the past few years Dr Wolin has incorporated his 20 year experience with fat transfer with his 20 year experience with laser skin therapy to eradicate all those irregularities and grooves in the lips. By using MICROFAT transfer of a patient’s own fat and combining the MICRO FAT transfer with laser therapy, he has been able to conquer the battle of the lip lines. The procedure is an office procedure done under local anesthesia, taking less than 45 minutes. Not only is FAT being transferred, but STEM CELLS and growth factors are also transferred with the fat to improve the overall health of the lips as well as the appearance.

For those patients that want a faster, less permanent solution to the lip problems, Dr Wolin is using Micro Cannula injection of Juvederm to provide a painless and bruiseless solution to the lip line problem.

SS_58_61LowDown_Jan16.indd 59

For those who are looking to rejuvenate an aging lip or simply add volume to a lifelong thin lip, there are also fat transfer options for long term permanent correction or Juvederm for a shorter term temporary fix. By utilizing blunt cannulas rather than needles, the procedures are almost painless, do not cause bruising and provide the patients with a great experience.

s an award-winning producer of juried fine art and wine festivals in Arizona, Thunderbird Artists will host its inaugural Sculpture & Wine Festival Jan. 15-17 in Fountain Hills. The juried show will feature more than 60 acclaimed sculptors from around the globe, giving patrons a chance to view and purchase stunning, diverse pieces comprised of bronze, stone, copper, clay, wood, metal, glass, gourd, steel, found objects and mixed media. For 34 years, Thunderbird Artists has been instrumental in showcasing the talents of sculptors worldwide, and this event is the organization’s first foray into a show exclusively dedicated to sculpture. Denise Dale, Thunderbird Artists’ vice president, says the Fountain Hills show will provide a rare chance to meet many of the renowned sculptors in one setting. “Our roster of sculptors will exhibit a breathtaking array of small, medium, life-size and monumental sculptures,” Dale says. “Whether you are seeking to enhance your home decor or you want to begin a sculpture garden, you’ll find a diverse selection of original, high-quality pieces to choose from.”

Art enthusiasts will marvel at elegant floral sculptures and luminescent bowls and vessels carved from alabaster by Camp Verde artist Susan Zalkind, and they’ll be equally mesmerized by pieces on display by Idaho artist Ken Newman, a bronze and wood sculptor who observes, interprets and then sculpts both wildlife and figures. Patriotic attendees will be captivated by the military bronze sculptures of Mesa artist David Paul Venell, while other art enthusiasts may be drawn to the bright, colorful glass pieces by Phoenix artist Johanna Dozer. “While the sculptures are diverse, the artists share the same passion for creativity,” Dale says. And, this passion is one that continues to receive support from Thunderbird Artists. “We’ve been honored to watch many of our participating sculptors’ careers soar over the years, and we’re also very excited to welcome new sculptors to the Thunderbird family,” says Judi Combs, Thunderbird Artists’ CEO. Thunderbird Artists will donate 25 percent of festival admission ticket sales and 25 percent of all wine sales to the nonprofit International Cancer Advocacy Network (ICAN). Through their extensive advocacy network, ICAN serves stage 4 cancer patients across the United States and in 53 countries, empowering them to navigate rapidly expanding diagnostic and personalized treatment options. “Thunderbird Artists has always been an ambassador for the arts and community,” says Combs, a cancer survivor. “And ICAN’s mission is one we support.”

Repair Where?

Automotive industry insider Shahe Koulloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Care Center, gives us tips on choosing the best facility for maintenance and repair.

When it comes to cars, there are people who know everything. There are people who know nothing. And there are people who rely on Google for all the answers. But no matter your level of automotive expertise (real or perceived), you will eventually have to depend on a repair shop for help in your time of need. The smartest decision you can make is to build up a solid relationship with a reputable auto mechanic. We asked Shahe Koulloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Care Center (and someone who genuinely falls into that“knows everything about cars” category) for tips on finding a place you can truly trust – and Google is not always the answer. Before you consider where to take your vehicle for maintenance and repair, Shahe says, you first need to understand the difference between the two. Routine maintenance items are listed in your vehicle’s owner’s manual as part of the model’s service schedule, intended to keep your vehicle in top operating condition. Repairs are services that need to be performed to fix a particular problem. (If your vehicle is new, you don’t have to go where you purchased it; federal law gives you the right to service it wherever you like without affecting your warranty coverage.) In finding the right place for your car, you should brush up on your owner’s manual; it will help you gain a better basic understanding of your vehicle, and an idea of what its maintenance schedule should look like. After all, how can you know you’re paying a good price for a repair without fully understanding how it works and why it failed? Be proactive – you want to find a good mechanic before you really need one.“Once your car has broken down and you’re desperate to get it running, you’re not going to be in a very good position to shop

SS_62_75Do_Cal_Events_Out_Jan16.indd 73

around,”says Shahe.“Use routine maintenance as an opportunity to find out if the mechanic is a good fit.” Your best option, he advises: ask around. Nothing confirms great service better than a real person telling you how their experiences have gone. Online, it’s sometimes hard to gauge the accuracy of a story; you never know whether a positive review was purchased by a third party, or if a negative review was written by a disgruntled exemployee. Always consider the source. Just because someone likes their mechanic doesn’t mean that shop does great work or charges fair prices – and vice-versa. Reading online reviews are helpful for building a consensus, but don’t necessarily paint a complete picture. Whether routine maintenance or necessary repair, good service all boils down to trust; there’s lots to be said for knowing you’re not being taken advantage of. Even if you’re mechanically disinclined, you should always be able to rest assured that the problem will be fixed, and fairly – not just a scenario where you fork over $1000, a guy turns the thingamajig and tweaks the flippidy-wazoo, and your engine still makes that funny noise. That scenario is why Shahe and Mazvo Car Care Center are devoted to empowering their customers. When you’re that passionate about what you do, it’s not about money. It’s about truly solving and not selling. “We’ve spent multiple sessions investigating some annoying problem only to figure it out, recommend a $30 fix, and teach the customer how to do it themselves next time,” says Shahe. “For my customers, that kind of integrity is priceless.” For more information, contact Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, 4610 North 7th Street, Phoenix, (602) 248-8711, www.mazvo.com

Take it from Dr. Holden’s and Dr. Tsujimura’s patients I came here for a rhinoplasty earlier this year. They had me meet with Dr. Holden who is probably the most amazing doctor I have ever met. He was awesome both before and after the surgery. He always took the time to address my problems and concerns and I felt like he really wanted me to be happy with the result of my nose. I would recommend Dr. Holden to anyone and everyone out there. I couldn’t have asked for a better surgeon!! —N.D.

Dr. Holden performed a CO2 laser treatment on me 7 weeks ago and my beautiful results just keep getting better. My experience with Dr. Holden and his staff exceeded my expectations. Dr. Holden is fantastic, I will trust none other when it is time for my facelift!! —Margaret

Dr. Holden in incredible. I cannot say enough good things about him. I had upper and lower blepharoplasties done and he was there for me every moment I had a worry or question. I am very happy with my results and besides obviously being an amazingly talented surgeon, he is the most caring and nicest doctor I have ever met. —S.S.

I LOVE the fact he specializes in the face. I knew I was in good hands, literally. He is an artist. I am all healed and do not look “done”. He took 10 years off my face. I cannot praise this man enough. I know that anything I may need in future, he will rise to the occasion and to THE BEST job. —K.K.

I went to Dr. Tsujimura for my breast augmentation and tummy tuck on the recommendation of my cousin, and I am so happy with my results. —Jennifer R.

Dr. Tsujimura’s bedside manner is impeccable... As well as the surgery he performs. Everyone compliments how natural my surgery looks, and that I have chosen the Perfect size. —Briana

He genuinely cares about giving people the best possible result and making sure they feel comfortable with everything, not things I commonly say when it comes to doctors so that’s why I’d highly recommend him!! —Cindi

He’s perfect! I am glad I did my research and didnt go with the other two surgeons I had picked out, I 100% believe my experience with Dr T couldn’t have been better! —Ann

his month, a one-of-a-kind exhibit is making its first and only stop in the United States right here in Scottsdale. As part of its five-year anniversary celebration, the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) welcomes Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker, on display Jan. 16 through June 5. The exhibit will showcase 10 historic and modern violins from the 16th to 19th centuries, including a 1728 Stradivarius violin on public display for the first time in the U.S. Stradivarius introduces the story of early violin makers from Cremona, Italy, and how they have influenced music since the 16th century. These timeless masterpieces were handcrafted by master luthiers, including Andrea Amati, the founding father of the violin; violin maker Guarneri del Gesù; and the master himself, Antonio Stradivari. The exhibition also includes several modern masterworks that demonstrate the continued influence of the early masters. In true form to MIM’s multisensory galleries, guests will be able to see and hear the stringed instruments with audio and video technology that brings the violins to life. “When visitors walk into the gallery, they will be taken on a journey from the Fiemme Valley forest, where the early masters sourced their wood, through violin makers’ workshops, European royal courts,

science labs, and finally to the thrilling concert stage. It will be an experience like no other,” says Kathleen Wiens, Ph.D., MIM’s curator for Europe To commemorate the exhibition, MIM will host concerts featuring some of the world’s most renowned violinists: Rachel Barton Pine, Regina Carter, Mark O’Connor and Midori. Special opening weekend activities include a VIP fundraiser for the nonprofit MIM, Jan. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m., with wine, hors d’oeuvres, an exhibition preview, a performance by Rachel Barton Pine, and a dessert reception. Tickets start at $200. On Jan. 17, Rachel Barton Pine graces the stage once more in a live violin “playoff,” commencing the Stradivarius exhibition concert series. In this interactive show, Pine will play several masterpiece instruments from the exhibit in a “blind test.” The audience will cheer for their best-sounding instrument – and then discover which of the masterpieces they chose is the crowd favorite. Tickets range from $43.50 to $48.50. Admission is $10 for the Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker exhibition only and $7 when purchased with general museum admission. WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY ON FOOD? Always trust your buds – your taste buds, that is. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISH TO COOK? Believe it or not – soups! Given my Hispanic heritage, I especially love to cook authentic posole. It takes hours, even days, to develop the right layers of flavor. So in addition to being a challenge, each time I set out to make it, I get a valuable lesson in patience and timing. WHAT TYPES OF DRINKS DO YOU LIKE TO PAIR WITH YOUR MENU? Variety is the spice of life, and while I do love to do cocktail and wine pairings across my menus, right now I feel like beer gives me lots of room to play. With everything from stouts and seasonal favorites to ciders and ales, there is not a flavor profile of food out there that can’t be matched with the right brew. WHAT’S NEW AT BLUEFIRE GRILLE, YOUR SIGNATURE RESTAURANT, FOR 2016? Only everything! We are just finishing a $5 million renovation of the resort, with much of it focused on the restaurant. We have new technologies throughout the space as well as a new menu, new cocktails, new local beer and wine options, and an expansive new community bar, among other things. TELL US SOMETHING WE’D BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. I was such a picky eater as a child that I wouldn’t even eat strawberries. Once I started working in kitchens, I had to force myself to taste anything that was to be served to a guest. Thirty years and 80 or so pounds later, I love it all! he atmosphere at Sushi Roku, located at the W Scottsdale, is enchantingly sleek, with a menu that showcases a passionate expression for traditional and contemporary sushi creations, as well as dynamic meat dishes. This dedication to craft extends to an innovative cocktail menu featuring beverages that work harmoniously with the menu, including one of its new additions: the Osaka Smoked Old Fashioned ($14). “My vision for this cocktail was a modern twist to a classic,” says General Manager Stephen Dean. “There are many interpretations, but I wanted to utilize an amazing Japanese whiskey, giving a Roku flair to a traditional beverage.” Served up, Roku’s take on the Old Fashioned marries Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky with Alessio Vermouth Chinaco, smoked cherry bitters and Fabbri cherries, all garnished with a slice of fresh orange. But the real gem of this drinkable work of art – which provides its unmistakable smoky flavor – is the technique of putting a glass over a small fire of cherrywood, enclosing all the smoke in the glass. “Smoking it helps enhance the whiskey and creates an experience of sitting by a fireplace in the winter and sipping an amazing Old Fashioned,” Dean says. “We continue to raise the bar with our food, beverages and service, and I wanted to create an experience of excellence with this cocktail.” 7277 E. TOTAL REBOOT Out with the old, in with the pretty BY LISA KASANICKY

A

moisturizer like Estée Lauder Revitalizing Supreme Global Anti-Aging Creme. $50$90 at Dillard’s, 480.949.5869.

new year means a chance for a fresh start, so begin this month by auditing your cosmetics and skin care collection. Make room for the season’s best and brightest beauty loot by tossing out last year’s products that didn’t work, didn’t flatter your complexion or are just plain suspect. Here’s what to pitch and what to poach.

Mangled brushes and combs If your favorite hairbrush is sporting misshapen bristles, you could be damaging your hair. And is your post-shower comb missing teeth? The same rules apply here. Upgrade your hair arsenal with a quality brush that promotes healthy hair like the Gloss Dual Boar Paddle Brush. $22 at Sephora, 480.945.0100 .

Unidentified mascaras The simple rule for mascara is that when you’re in doubt, toss it out – way out. The FDA recommends ditching mascaras at the three-month mark because of repeated microbial exposure, which carries a high risk of eye infections. Get long and flirty lashes with a shiny new tube of Guerlain Cils d’Enfer So Volume Maxi Lash Mascara. $30 at Nordstrom, 480.946.4111.

Gummy hair sprays If your current hair spray is coming out in sporadic bursts, it’s not doing you or your bathroom floor any good. Start 2016 by trying something new, such as the weightless Living Proof Flex Shaping Hairspray. $24 at Sephora.

Jars of creamy things Good things come in pretty jars – except when nasty stuff starts growing in said jars. Skin creams that require you to dip your finger in for a dollop can introduce bacteria into the product. Make a resolution to use a tiny application spoon (or wash your hands before you dip), and make room on your vanity for a luxury

Funky nail polish colors Toss out the likes of neon green and orange polishes to make room for the soft, feminine hues of winter, like this whimsical color (Bamboo White) from the Victoria Beckham-inspired collection by Nails, Inc. $25 at Sephora.

WHERE THE HEAT IS ON

A new kind of boutique resort reinvents Miami’s luxury travel experience BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOS BY NICHOLAS KOENING

B

ienvenidos a Miami – where extravagances abound! Among the newest and most impressive ways to indulge in everything Miami has to offer is by visiting The Miami Beach EDITION, a boutique hotel nestled in the heart of Miami Beach that boasts 70,000 square feet of pristine shoreline. The EDITION was designed by Ian Schrager, the hotel and entertainment industry giant credited with initially creating the concept of the “boutique hotel.” “He is also known as the co-founder of both Studio 54 and Miami’s own Delano Hotel, the iconic venue that propelled South Beach onto the international stage in the 1990s,” says General Manager Mathew Pargament. “In no little part due to the work of Schrager, Miami has emerged as an international tourism and cultural capital that rivals any of the world’s urban centers and attracts people from every corner of the globe. The EDITION seeks to satisfy these diverse travelers’ cravings.”

The Dining Accenting Miami Beach’s Latin flavors with the freshest Florida foods, internationally acclaimed Michelin-rated chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten – often seen on the Food Network and the Cooking Channel – offers not one, but three, dining concepts at the EDITION. At The Matador Room, chef JeanGeorges serves a distinctive, modern interpretation of Latin cuisine influenced by Spanish, Caribbean and South American flavors. The restaurant’s historic, oval-shaped dining room recalls all the excitement of Miami Beach’s heyday of the 1950s and ’60s. Market at EDITION, inspired by the century-old markets in Madrid and Barcelona, is an imaginative reinvention of a food bazaar that’s part patisserie (pastry shop), part boulangerie (bakery) and part salumeria (butcher). Tropicale offers casual, alfresco dining with a selection of fresh, light menu items. Pargament says the venue is a

Adding a unique flair to Miami Beach nightlife, the EDITION’s on-site “Basement,” which is, quite literally, located in an expansive basement space, features a nightclub in homage to Schrager’s Studio 54 as well as a bowling alley and a 2,000-square-foot ice skating rink. Each space boasts a state-of-the-art sound system, dramatic lighting and projection effects created by world-renowned lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe, a concert lighting specialist who has worked with the likes of Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.

The Sandbox Taking luxury beyond simple beach and pool offerings, the EDITION developed its playful “Sandbox” concept, nestled in a tropical nook just off the water. With hammocks, low-lying beds, a ping pong table and an outdoor movie screen for special events, it’s the perfect escape for an afternoon nap, private party or leisurely cocktails.

The Rooms In addition to the resort’s 294 rooms and suites, the EDITION boasts 28 of the most coveted spaces in all of South Beach – its private bungalows. These super-exclusive rooms are a feast for the eyes, with sleek finishes like light woodpaneled walls and ivory porcelain-slab floor tiles. Upper-level bungalows include a roof deck with plunge pool, direct ocean view and custom furnishings. The crown jewel of the resort is the 2,500-square-foot bungalow penthouse, featuring marble bathrooms with a rainforest shower, a personal elevator and a private rooftop lap pool. Rates during the winter months range from $800 to $10,000 per night. To discover more and book your stay, visit www.editionhotels.com.

recently got my first look at and the opportunity to drive the latest retro-futuristic interpretation of the classic Camaro. The 2016 redesign is the first since Chevrolet reintroduced the muscle car in 2010, after an eight-year hiatus. While the 2010 iteration was a wanton and delightful disregard for finesse and etiquette, this sixthgeneration pony car is better in every way: It’s quicker, more responsive, lighter and a welcome step up in quality execution. Chevrolet came up with a plan to introduce the new Camaro to the automotive media by encouraging them to “Find New Roads,” covering the 48 contiguous states, culminating at the Los Angeles JANUARY 2016 |

Auto Show in November. Numerous east and west route segments were offered, and I chose to travel from Orlando, Florida to New Orleans. The route from Florida to Louisiana was for my choosing, but I was encouraged to use back roads through small towns, visit historic landmarks, drive scenic byways and, essentially, discover Americana. I had my choice of two models: the SS, a 6.2-liter, 455-horsepower V-8, and the RS, a 3.6-liter, 335-horsepower six-cylinder with a six-speed manual transmission (tested here). The six-cylinder was exceptionally enjoyable, with ample power in every instance, and the manual transmission was buttery smooth and geared perfectly. A first-ever four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 275 horsepower is also available for 2016. My first stop was at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, Florida, and then on to Weeki Wachee, Florida, where the world-famous mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs perform on a daily basis. From there, I continued north and west along U.S. Route 98, the scenic drive along the Gulf of Mexico into Alabama, picking up U.S. Route 90 to Mississippi. I used Chevy’s OnStar system to find and book a hotel room in Mississippi, and by the time I got to the hotel, I had clocked more than 500 miles with an excellent day of sightseeing and sidetracking. After a stop in Madisonville, Louisiana, new roads eventually led to the Big Easy. With more than 700 miles logged, the Camaro was an exceptional performer that did everything better than expected. Although the 2016 Camaro looks similar to the outgoing model, it is an even more exceptional vehicle, with an upgraded interior and new technology, such as available high-definition color displays and a sophisticated ambient lighting system. And while you might be determined to opt for the powerful 455-horsepower SS model, don’t overlook the V-6. I was quite impressed. Family Law

with Yvette and Jennifer Custody

Stacey and Joe are in the middle of a custody battle and Stacey has evidence that Joe abuses drugs/alochol‌

Yvette says:

Stacey may have grounds to file an emergency petition for temporary legal decision making and supervised parenting time. Stacey can request a hair follicle test and weekly random drug and alcohol testing with a court approved facility for a period of time.

Child support

Julie and Richard divorced a year ago and Richard just lost his job and stopped paying child support‌

Jennifer says:

If Richard wilfully fails to pay child support when he has the ability to pay, the court can find him in contempt and issue an arrest warrant. A child support order is effective until a party requests a modification of the amount from the court. To modify child support, the loss of a job must be found to be substantial and continuing. SKINNY SIPPERS

9 cocktails for a happy (and healthy) New Year BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

I

f you’ve made a New Year’s resolution to be healthier (and, really, who hasn’t?), rest assured it doesn’t have to interfere with your social life. Skinny cocktails – those with 250 calories or less that are low in sugar and fat – abound at venues across the Valley. Here is a look at some of our favorites:

Steak 44

Cocktail: Watermelon Mojito Details: Instead of using sugar, the bartender muddles watermelon and mint together. Rum and sparkling water are then added for a sweet mojito with a twist, resulting in a concoction that contains half the usual calories. Calories: 100 Cost: $15 5101 N. 44th St., Phoenix; 602.271.4400; www.steak44.com.

Yard House

Cocktail: Juniper Fusion Details: Hendrick’s Gin is blended with fresh strawberries and cucumbers, then combined with orange bitters for a perfect mix that is sweet, sour and satisfying – without processed sugar. Calories: 160 Cost: $9.95 21001 Tatum Blvd., Phoenix; 480.563.9273; 7014 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; 480.675.9273; www.yardhouse.com.

Cibo e Vino

Cocktail: Raspberry Hibiscus Details: This unique and invigorating cocktail starts with a mixture of white rum, fresh lime juice, club soda and plenty of fruit. Hibiscus is then muddled and mixed in, and the drink is garnished with raspberries, blackberries and basil leaves. Calories: 160 Cost: $8 34522 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.595.6600; www.ciboevinoaz.com.

Salty Sow

Cocktail: Sparkling Sangria Details: More than your average sangria, this libation blends elderflower liqueur, lemon, orange, grapes and opal basil with a hint of sparkling wine for a refreshingly light treat. Calories: 150 Cost: $8 4801 E. Cactus Road, Phoenix; 602.795.9463; www.saltysow.com.

Boulders Resort & Spa

Cocktail: Arizona Sunset Cosmopolitan Details: Sweet Chambord raspberry vodka is the basis for this non-traditional cosmopolitan that features citrus, sour flavors and fruit. Calories: 200 Cost: $12 34631 N. Tom Darlington Drive, Carefree; 480.488.9009; www.theboulders.com.

32 Shea

Cocktail: Triple Berry Mint Fizz Details: This stunner contains both gin and vodka, relying on stevia and the natural sweetness of fruit to satisfy sugar cravings for under 150 calories. With a light mint note, the drink reminds you that spring is just around the corner. Calories: 140 Cost: $10 10626 N. 32nd St., Phoenix; 602.867.7432; www.32shea.com.

Copperleaf Gastrolounge

Cocktail: The Showstopper Details: With a little lemon and tingle of tangerine, this vodka-based cocktail combines several fresh citrus fruits with a splash of lemon-lime soda. Calories: 200 Cost: $5 4225 N. Craftsman Court, Scottsdale; 480.941.4155; www.copperleafgastrolounge.com.

Maya Day + Nightclub

Cocktail: Cucumber Crush Details: Muddled cucumber, lime juice and fresh basil mingle with St. Germain and cucumber-infused vodka to please the palate without punishing the waistline. Calories: 160 Cost: $10 7333 E. Indian Plaza, Scottsdale; 480.625.0528; www.mayaclubaz.com.

The District Bar

Cocktail: District 75 Details: Part sparkling cocktail, part ruby red grapefruit refresher, this dazzler combines Deep Eddy’s wildly popular grapefruit vodka with a healthy serving of fresh lemons and Champagne. Calories: 225 Cost: $8 7301 E. Indian Plaza, Scottsdale; 480.664.0356; www.districtbaraz.com.

Holy halibut! At $29, Rhythm & Wine’s eye-popping Hawaiian Halibut is new to the menu, but it’s already a crowd favorite. Sourced from the Pacific Ocean and never frozen, the flaky halibut is quick-seared, bringing out its meaty flavor and natural juices. It is then layered with a chili-butter sauce that packs a major flavor punch thanks to a hint of Chef Terry Craig’s secret ingredient (Sriracha) and served on a bed of slightly sweet forbidden rice. 7605 E. CAULIFLOWER GETS CLEVER

These five creative concoctions make getting your veggies in a cinch BY TARYN JEFFRIES

C

auliflower has become a well-known, low-carb substitute for potatoes and rice, but this cruciferous vegetable also packs a ton of nutrients – carotenoids, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin B and a decent amount of protein. Beyond that, cauliflower is incredibly versatile; its unassuming taste is a great basis for a variety of ingredients and flavors, making the culinary possibilities seemingly endless. Here, we highlight five unique dishes featuring this meaty garden flower.

BOOTLEGGERS MODERN AMERICAN SMOKEHOUSE 7217 E. 1st St., Scottsdale 480.404.9984 www.bootleggersaz.com It’s no secret that Bootleggers is widely known for their bacon boards and smoked meats, but they’re also doing some pretty incredible things with what is typically an afterthought at a smokehouse. If you’d like to infuse your diet with an alternative protein, try the Grilled Cauliflower Steak. This

dish features a combination of delicately charred cauliflower and a bounty of sweet whiskey onions. It’s topped with lots of melted cheddar cheese and dusted with pretzel breadcrumbs. While this may not be the healthiest way to get your cauliflower in, it’s a tasty way to start the introduction!

PITA JUNGLE 7366 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale 480.922.7482 www.pitajungle.com Pita Jungle is all about catering to a variety of diets with fresh and healthy menu options. You can certainly fill up on their hummus platters, but if you want to add

Pita Jungle

a little more variety to your meal, opt for a side order of the Caramelized Cauliflower with Tahini. The caramelization of the cauliflower introduces a hint of sweetness, and the crispy onions add a great contrast of texture. The addition of the tahini imparts a layer of flavor that complements the creative dish.

ingredients, such as the Cauliflower & Wild Rice Casserole. This hearty casserole is comprised of cauliflower, wild rice, almonds, Parmesan and a delicious garlic cream sauce. The cauliflower is ovenroasted, allowing the vegetable to maintain its structure, and the wild rice adds a complexity in texture. The salty nature of the Parmesan cheese pairs well with the slight sweetness of the garlic cream sauce to balance out the earthy profile of the other ingredients.

SCOTTSDALE BEER COMPANY 8608 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale 480.219.1844 www.scottsdalebeercompany.com Restaurants have been suggesting wines to pair with meals for years, and now, breweries are following suit, crafting menus around what dishes and beers pair best together. The thoughtful menu at Scottsdale Beer Company includes a Roasted Cauliflower dish that adds almonds, scallions and smoked tomatoes to the veggie for a healthy and flavorful accompaniment to the beer selection. The roasting process gives the cauliflower a bite, enhanced even more with an intoxicating smoky tomato sauce. The addition of almonds and scallions add extra flavor and crunch. If you aren’t going the vegetarian route, ask for the addition of pork belly cracklings.

TWISTED GROVE PARLOR + BAR 8220 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale 480.699.0811 www.twistedgrove.com Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar is quickly gaining traction as the go-to spot for sophisticated comfort food. Many menu items may sound familiar, but this modern American kitchen is hard at work creating the unexpected. Take their Cauliflower ‘Grits’ side dish as an example. While this Southern staple is usually made from ground corn, the version here combines grated cauliflower florets with asadero cheese and reduced cream, resulting in a super creamy dish with a tinge of tang, thanks to the kick of the asadero.

SWEET TREATS

Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery makes Scottsdale even sweeter

S

mallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery, which features gourmet cupcakes and small-batch ice cream, opened its Scottsdale doors last month. This confectionary offers 12 signature flavors of cupcakes, baked fresh every day from a repertoire of more than 200 flavors. Founded in 2008 by Jeff Martin in Kansas City, Smallcakes has more than 100 locations. Martin received national recognition from three appearances on the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” a feature on the “The View,” catering cupcakes to star-studded events such as the MTV Video Music Awards, and from Smallcakes being listed as one of the top 10 cupcake places to try in the country by USA Today. The Scottsdale location is owned and operated by local resident Michelle Arena. “I’m excited to share our cupcakes and ice cream with the Scottsdale area and provide a friendly spot that neighbors can walk and bike to.” The cupcakery’s daily menu features the 12 signature flavors: chocolate cream, birthday cake, lemon drop, red velvet, pink chocolate, pink vanilla, vanilla-n-chocolate, peanut butter cup, cookies-n-cream, chocoholic, caramel crunch, and hot fudge sundae. The ice cream flavors play off of these, with crossover flavors like red velvet and chocohlic (the ice cream versions of both have cupcake pieces sprinkled on top). Can’t decide between the cake and the cream? Order a cupcake shake – pick your cupcake, pick your ice cream flavor and they’ll blend them into a super sweet treat.

“I hope our customers can see our commitment to baking amazing cupcakes and creating delicious ice cream the minute that they step into our store,” Arena says. “Add to that our friendly and dedicated staff and you have the perfect combination for a great experience.” Beyond its decadent goodies, Smallcakes is actually doing good as well. As a community-driven franchise, Smallcakes prides itself on giving back to the community by reaching out to local organizations and charities. Leftover cupcakes are donated to Waste Not, a local nonprofit food rescue organization that delivers perishable food to families in need. “It’s another way of giving back to the community that we live in,” says Arena. Now, how’s that for sweet? Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery, 9699 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; 480.282.8611; www.smallcakescupcakery.com.

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
