TELL
Well, hello, 2020! It’s hard to believe that this month begins not only a new year, but also a new decade. For many, that means embarking upon new goals, new adventures, new ideas, new growth – basically a whole lot of new! For that reason, I always love this time of year, as it brings about a time to reflect on what was and plan for what is to come. And for the first few months here in Scottsdale, there is a lot to come. Of course, it wouldn’t be January in Scottsdale without auto auction week and the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, which rolls into its 49th anniversary this year. Our cover story (page 40) features Overhaulin’ and Long Lost Family TV host Chris Jacobs, who is auctioning a custom 1968 Plymouth GTX coupe to benefit U.S. Navy SEALs. For auto aficionados, Toyota is also bringing back its GR Supra from a 20-year hiatus. Get the details on page 110. If you’re into toys of the flying kind, take a look at a sky-high adventure available to those who stay at Four Seasons Las Vegas (page 111). And for fulfilling any resolutions to check a few places off your bucket list, get to know travel expert Janet Semenova (page 27), and then commemorate those travels with a handcrafted globe by local artist Shannon Bundschuh (page 90). Other things to try in the new year: unique ways to wellness (page 88), places with delicious pizza (page 120), creative takes on classic cocktails (page 116), mocktails for the healthy-minded (page 79), and a new brunch spot with decadent morningtime poutine (page 130). One of my favorite articles this month is on those who have dedicated their careers to giving back. Head to page 44 to meet the leaders of five local nonprofits, including those that help give hope to children, animals, people in domestic violence situations, and communities around the world. Here is to 2020 and all that it may bring – happiness, health, prosperity, and good ol’ fun! Travel expert Janet Semenova aims to foster cultural connection while building her own American dream
Now the co-founder of luxury travel design company Boutique Travel Advisors, Janet Semenova’s journey to Arizona involved countless obstacles. “I was born in 1983 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan,” Semenova says. “At that time, it was a communist republic in the former
Soviet Union.” Her family’s freedoms – from what books they could read to when and if they could leave the country – were restricted. “For years, my parents planned our emigration to the United States, reminding me daily not to utter a word about it to anyone,”

Pulse UP CLOSE says Semenova, noting that families who considered fleeing were seen as traitors. “I didn’t actually know when – or if – we were leaving. Then, when I was 7, my parents took me out of school one day and drove to the airport.” They boarded a plane to Chicago, officially becoming refugees. After arriving, her parents soon divorced, and Semenova and her mother, Irina, began life on their own with just two suitcases to their name. “I didn’t speak any English,” Semenova says. Her mother – a journalist in Uzbekistan – worked in a factory and as a cleaner to put Semenova through a school that taught English and Hebrew. “Words cannot describe how hard that first year was for us.” But the pair persevered. “Once we got more comfortable socially and financially, we traveled as often as possible,” Semenova says. “People don’t realize the freedom a U.S. passport grants to explore all of the beauty in the world.” Their trips together, however, came to an abrupt halt when Semenova was a high school senior. “In 2000, my mom was diagnosed with liposarcoma, a rare cancer,” Semenova says. “Despite her battle, she insisted I go to college upon graduation.” Though hesitant, Semenova did as was requested and entered Indiana University to study business. “I ultimately lost my mom in 2002. Although this was a devastating experience, it created a new sense of clarity that led me to live life with deeper purpose,” Semenova says. “Once I was able to focus back on school, I made the decision to switch my major to nursing, inspired by the people who helped care for her.” Semenova enrolled at Rush University’s nursing school, graduating in 2005 and earning acceptance to the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a master’s degree, allowing her to become a nurse practitioner. “I also fell in love with an emergency room physician named Jon between classes, studying and clinical work,” Semenova says. The two married and began planning a life together – one that didn’t involve snow. Eventually, they decided Arizona would be their new home. “In 2008, we moved to Desert Ridge. I was 35 weeks pregnant, so my son, Zachary, was born just three weeks after arriving,” says Semenova, who also had a daughter, Isabelle, in 2010. The family settled into life, eventually moving to Paradise Valley. Semenova also took on a position at Phoenix Children’s Hospital as a pediatric pain management nurse practitioner, helping children with cancer and chronic and terminal illnesses. “But no matter how busy our lives got, we always made it a point to travel with our children,” Semenova says. Her kids have visited 17 countries since learning to walk. “Exposing them to other cultures and ways of thinking in the way my mom did with me is a priority.”
Down to Business During a trip to Costa Rica in 2017, Semenova was inspired to take her love of travel to a whole new level. “We sat next to a travel adviser at dinner one night. I didn’t know they still existed,” Semenova says. She spent the next several
28
So Scottsdale! January ‘20
hours learning how the adviser customized journeys for individuals, couples, families and friends far beyond anything the internet could do. “Something clicked. I wanted to do the same thing.” Once back in Arizona, people called Semenova crazy for considering a profession many assumed could be done by computer – except Angie Rice. “Angie’s kids played soccer with mine. She was equally as passionate about travel and a bit burned out by her forensic accounting job,” Semenova says. “So, we put the wheels in motion to launch our own business.” In 2017, Boutique Travel Advisors (BTA; www.travelbta. com) was born. It is based on a process the women developed wherein they explore a guest’s travel preferences, bucket list dreams, vacation style, and budget before even putting pen to paper on plans. “We invest time in becoming our client’s long-term and trusted advisers for their travels anywhere in the world,” Semenova says. Today, she advises across the country under the BTA umbrella and regularly visits and plans trips everywhere from Fiji and Africa to Australia and Greece. Trips encompass a variety of interests, including those focused on culinary, groups, family and luxury. And in 2019, BTA began assisting companies in planning off-the-beaten-path incentive travel for employees. They are also passionate about bringing like-minded people together for trips, recently taking a group of local health care professionals on a trek along the Inca Trail. And in June, Semenova and her husband will lead a group through Norway and Iceland. “Our mission is to change the way people travel and create opportunities for them to have transformative experiences,” Semenova says. “We believe that travel is necessary to foster open-mindedness, bridge cultural differences, and create a more compassionate and understanding society.”
Make Your Hair Color Sparkle for the New Year with Color Specialist, Rodney Gentry
“This season, it’s all about blends and natural, warmer tones,” says Rodney Gentry, hair color expert and master stylist. “There is so much you can do with your hair to create just about any look you want.” There’s no surprise that Ombré is extremely popular this fall. It’s a hair coloring trend that doesn’t seem to be wavering; only changing by the season. This fall, the Ombré style uses warmer tones are blended for a subtle, more natural look. Another gorgeous blended color that’s hot this season is Mushroom Blonde. Mushroom Blonde is an ashy mix between blonde and brunette, creating an ashy, gray blonde with dark undertones—think of the color variety on the underside of a mushroom. “It’s excellent for weaving colored pieces around your face to create a subtle and natural change,” says Rodney. This color option is a great way for blondes to spend time on the darker side. Conversely, there is Mushroom Brown for the brunettes who want
to go a little lighter, while creating a multi-dimensional hair color. In this instance, the colors are subtle shades of brown and gray. Copper tones are all the rage as more and more people desire a look of red without the commitment and hassle of keeping up with red hair. Additionally, rooted gold tones are a favorite this season. There’s also a variety of feminine chestnuts and browns. “These colors tend to not fade as much so it’s more low-maintenance,” Rodney explains. For those pesky gray hairs, Rodney reveals that the key to gray coverage is to not cover it 100%. Instead, he prefers to use a neutral color on select pieces to make the grays look highlighted. This way, people don’t have to recolor as often. By doing this technique, it saves the condition of the hair since you’re not covering all of your roots as often. For those of us who lived through the 80’s, you may see familiar-looking accessories making a comeback.
Hair color specialist Rodney Gentry is located in a private studio at Sachi Studios, 10201 N. Scottsdale Rd., Suite 10, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. For an appointment, please call 480.639.2000, or visit www.rodneygentry.com for more information.
Fun-colored bobby pins, bows, and scrunchies are back in style, along with toned-down versions of 80’s hair styles. “You get volume in the body of your hair, with tamer roots,” says Rodney. Rodney takes into account a person’s features, skin tones, and routine when he artistically crafts a new hairstyle. “”The right color will make the right hair cut. Texture with color is the way to go,” he says. Schedule your appointment with Rodney Gentry at Sachi Studios 480.639.2000 or visit www.rodneygentry.com.

MAKING MEMORIES
Everything Etched president and founder Tyler Cadwell preserves meaningful moments
When Tyler Cadwell combined his construction skills with his background in film production, Everything Etched (www.everythingetched.com) was born. For Christmas 2013, after Cadwell handmade and engraved a wooden box for his mom, the Arizona State University graduate felt compelled to start selling similar products on Etsy. Since then, Cadwell has upgraded to more than 70 products, eight laser engravers, and a showroom. Today, he and his team of 15 employees handcraft remarkable personalized keepsakes for life’s most unforgettable moments, including engraved glass, metal and wood mementos. The Arizona native, who describes himself as driven, passionate and creative, finds joy in his 4,500-square-foot warehouse in Scottsdale Airpark, a far cry from his original production facility: his mother’s garage. “I’m inspired to be the best version of myself and to leave a mark on this world when I’m gone,” Cadwell says. Besides collaborating with his team of dedicated creatives, getting to know his customers is the most rewarding part of his job. “I love working with customers on custom projects and learning about who the project is for. It’s very rewarding seeing all that come together in the final piece,” he says. Cadwell also takes pride in the speed of his craft. In as little as 15 minutes, the team can personalize items ranging from wine glasses to cheese boards to replicated photos on wood wall hangings, all while shipping out orders within 24 hours. “Besides our speed, our relentless pursuit of creative and unique gifts sets us apart,” Cadwell says. In 2018, Everything Etched hit $1 million in sales, marking a turning point for Cadwell as the company went from a startup to a small business that now sells worldwide. Early this year, Cadwell will launch a new website where customers can create their own designs as well as new etching services, including mobile engraving. “We will be able to take our engravers to any event, including weddings and company parties, for people who want to do something unique for their guests,” Cadwell says.

S
Scylvia-Elvira Danese of Danese Creations
cylvia-Elvira Danese, owner of Danese Creations, has been in business since 1971. Through her gift of custom designing, men and women can get all their custom designing, tailoring, alterations, bridal wear and all accessories, fabric, jewelry and the best fitting bra. “I’m a 3rd generation Custom Designer/Tailor in my family, I follow My Mother Maria and Grandmother Chapita,” said Danese. “My designs have made it to the Emmys, The Country Music Awards, the Oscars, the White House, The Oprah show, I’ve also been featured on First Edition, total Divas, all the local TV channels. It’s been an amazing ride for these last 48 years!” While Danese is proud of the accolades and the high profile clients that have graced her designs, some of her fondest memories are the ones that have changed the lives of others. “I saved a brides wedding day by making a beautiful, custom
wedding gown from scratch, on the day of the wedding, in 2 hours and 50 minutes, that is how I got dubbed “the Fairy Godmother Of Fashion”, she explains. “I’m also called “The Boob Whisperer” for the expert bra fittings that I do. Your boobs can either make you or break you. If they look good, you look good and feel good, sexy, young, (even if you’re old) thin, (even if you’re heavy), and your clothes fit well.” Danese is committed to helping every man or woman find their perfect fit, in addition women can get a free bra fitting. Clients need to set an appointment with her shop, and with zero obligations to purchase bras from her. “Most women just don’t know what a bra is supposed to do, how a bra is supposed to fit, how a bra has been designed, or what bra size is right for them. Industry estimates are that anywhere from 70 to 80 perfect of women are wearing the wrong size bra, although in my opinion, informed by more than 48
years of experience, it’s more like 90 percent. And there’s been no reliable source for women to go to and find out the truth about bras, bra measuring and bra sizing, until now.” If clients are not in the market for custom designing, you will find original Danese Creations designs, ready-to-wear one of a kind bridal gowns, mother of the bride or groom gowns, evening gowns, cocktail dresses, skirts, blouses, and more. Danese Creations prides themselves on being able to make custom garments from a picture or a drawing or an idea and she can do this all without requiring the client to be local. Above all, Danese has one goal for her shop “To do the impossible to get to solve all the sewing problems that come my way. My motto that I got from my Father Giacomo Danese is “Nothing is Impossible, Difficult but not Impossible”, she explains. “We never say no, it’s always yes we can, just say when!”

Bob Roth is a partner in aging and activism for senior population statewide
Bob Roth got into a career of caregiving after years of being an actual caregiver. “In 1985, my mom had a massive heart attack, followed by four more. She spent nearly six weeks in the hospital,” Roth says. He then cared for her with his father and brothers in their native Maryland before moving her to Arizona in 1987. Wanting to help ensure other families had assistance during times like this, Roth and his family founded Cypress HomeCare Solutions (www.cypresshomecare.com) in1994. Through it, they provide in-home care services including companionship, personal hygiene and care assistance, medication reminders, shopping and errand services, light housekeeping, meal planning and preparation, transportation, and mobility assistance. “When someone has a life-changing event such as an accident, heart attack, or being diagnosed with a serious medical condition, family members are often hundreds of miles away and cannot be there for their loved ones,” says Roth, who became the company’s managing partner in 2003. “We are able to care for people’s loved ones by enabling them to stay in their homes, and at the same time, we are able to give their family members peace of mind that their loved one is safe and cared for.” Cypress eventually led Roth down the path of advocacy as well. Over the past decade, Roth has served on the Task Force Against Senior Abuse in partnership with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office and was appointed in 2017 by Gov. Doug Ducey to the Arizona Governor’s Advisory Council on Aging, fighting for the rights of the elderly population on the local and national level. He also played an active role on the boards of the Banner Alzheimer’s Foundation, Home Care Association of America, Arizona Geriatrics Society, and Private Duty Home Care Association. Today, Roth is a member of the board of directors for Duet Partners in Health and Aging, a nonprofit that helps older adults and their families cope with challenges related to aging, regardless of their means. They also provide services such a transportation and offer classes and support groups for the senior population. “Both Duet and I share a vision: a world where no one has to face life’s aging challenges alone,” Roth says.

Dre Brown’s aesthetic is a blend of luxe streetwear and a well-trimmed haircut BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
When many of the Valley’s top athletes need a haircut, they visit Dre Brown, owner of Mug & Mane Barber Lounge. The sports lover is passionate about more than style and men’s grooming – he has made it his mission to support the community by mentoring young men to become their own boss. With a blend of urban streetwear and business casual styles – often dressing in layered T-shirts, jackets and skinny ripped jeans paired with Vince boots – Brown has catapulted into the “cool dad” category according to the kids at his daughter’s school. Brown sticks to a palette of neutral tones like white, black and gray but loves a pop of color for special occasions. He shops at Zara, Topshop and Lululemon to stay on trend and comfortable. Working as a high-profile barber, it’s important for Brown to be hip to new styles. “I’m a walking brand. If my haircut is sharp and my attire is clean and on point, people gravitate to that,” he says. His must-have stylish staples? A great jacket with a hood or high collar, a designer watch, and a fresh haircut, of course. “You can get away with wearing almost anything with a fresh haircut,” Brown says. “Look good, feel good, everything is good!”
How does your career influence your style? When I used to go to the barbershop, I would look at the barbers to see who dressed the nicest and who had the nicest haircuts. I figured if they cared enough to look as nice as they did, they would apply the same courtesy to me. What is the most prized possession in your closet? My shoe collection – it ranges from Vince boots and Birkenstocks to Yeezys and Balenciagas. You can never go wrong with a pair of nice shoes. What is your favorite store? My favorite store is Wang’s Closet. They have high-end fashion streetwear mixed with legendary vintage pieces.

DRESSING FOR THE DAY Bethany Liebentritt uses creative freedom and balance to craft her look
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Health care and fashion may not be the most likely of matches, but for Arizona native Bethany Liebentritt, each day is a new opportunity to use fashion as an artistic medium at her job as the vice president of physician human resources at Banner Health. Liebentritt practices event-specific styling and is always accessorized. She pulls off her classic-meets-edgy look with structured pieces and by rocking pops of color with statement jewelry, scarves and purses. But for Liebentritt, it’s all about balance. “When you add something unique, it means the outfit must scale back to make way for what’s on display,” she says. “So, ‘cleanly creative’ is a great way to ensure balance.” Beyond this balancing act, she is constantly on the lookout for high-quality, great-value additions to her closet. “My only go-to brands are for workday staples: AG jeans and Via Spiga shoes. Other than that, the hunt is always on for the absolute best price, which can be found anywhere from Etsy to eBay to vintage shops and estate jewelry sales.” Recently, her employer implemented “Dress for Your Day,” which enables creative freedom for employees to dress based on their schedule. “Big meetings mean a blazer. But a Tuesday with no meetings? That’s a professionally artistic opportunity,” Liebentritt says. “Getting dressed in the morning is a chance to be expressive, so the goal of the day drives the creativity.”
What is your must-have item? The perfect jewelry. I tend to opt for pearls, but I go for any unique piece that can tie an outfit together. What is your No. 1 style tip? Risky is one step further than you think it is. Do it. Try it. You’re already a piece of art, so adorn yourself and smile. What is your most prized possession? The rose-colored leather purse I bought when I got my first job out of college. I named her Rosy. She represents that hard work pays off.

Television host Chris Jacobs auctions a custom 1968 Plymouth GTX coupe at the 49th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction to benefit U.S. Navy SEALs

For television host and self-described automotive enthusiast Chris Jacobs, life revolves around inspiring others. Born and raised in Chicago, Jacobs made California his permanent home when he moved there for college in 1988. After getting his bachelor’s degree in English at Whittier College, he graduated from Western State University College of Law and passed the California bar exam on his first try. Despite this achievement, his true passion lied elsewhere.
42
So Scottsdale! January ‘20
“For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be in the entertainment business,” Jacobs says. “Law school was always a backup plan in case it didn’t work out, but I was always interested in making people laugh or cry or feel any emotion.” And he’s been a natural since a young age – when his parents hosted dinner parties during his childhood, Jacobs recalls holding a party of his own, putting on miniature talent shows in the basement. “I’d make everyone come down to watch,” he says.
“I’m sure I was annoying!” But his dedication paid off, and in 1995, Jacobs got his start in the entertainment world with parts in several TV shows and movies. His resume contains plenty of familiar names, from roles in smash-hits like The X-Files and Two and a Half Men to films such as The Nick of Time, which starred Johnny Depp and Christopher Walken. In 2003, Jacobs got his big break when he was selected to co-host Overhaulin’ alongside automobile designer Chip Foose. “It changed my life,” Jacobs says. “My love of cars goes back as far as I can remember. Growing up, my dad and my brothers always had cool cars.” In each episode of the fan-favorite show, a deserving person, nominated by family and friends and selected out of a pool of thousands of submissions, receives an automotive makeover from Jacobs, Foose and their team without the person’s knowledge. The eight-day remaking period is usually preceded by a good-spirited ruse to get the person’s car out from under their noses, with diverting explanations ranging from insurance fraud to repossession by the IRS. A large part of what makes the show special is the way it celebrates the link between a person and his or her car. “My favorite part is the reaction we get when the people see their overhauled cars for the first time,” Jacobs says. “There’s usually a very strong attachment to these cars. You can see the person fill up with emotion and that is so cool to witness.” Among Jacobs’ most treasured memories is when he and his team overhauled co-host Foose’s own truck in 2005. “I’ll never forget the look on Chip’s face as he hugged his dad Sam, his mentor who passed away in 2018, as he said, ‘This isn’t supposed to happen to me!’ It was an incredible moment,” Jacobs says. And it’s moments like those that prove that Overhaulin’, now streaming its 10th season on the MotorTrend app, isn’t just about the rides – it’s about the people. The show revolves around the simple deed of doing something special for an ordinary person who deserves an extraordinary act of kindness, be it someone facing hardship, someone who lost a family member, someone who has done something nice for others, former military, and so on. Jacobs’ impact in the lives of others extends far beyond his role on Overhaulin’. He also hosts Long Lost Family on TLC, a show that follows the journey of those searching to find their biological parents or children after a lifetime of separation. It’s a show that hits particularly close to home for Jacobs. When he was 22 months old, Jacobs was adopted into a loving and supportive family, and when he was 22 years old, he contacted an adoption location service in the hopes of reconnecting with his birth mother. By a stroke of luck, his birth mother had registered with that same agency a few years earlier, and the two were reunited. “I can still remember the exact moment when we saw each other in person for the first time,” Jacobs says. Decades later, the pair is still close. Now, Jacobs considers himself lucky to be able to help people that are in the same situation he was through his role on Long Lost Family. “It’s an honor and a privilege to be a part of such a happy experience,” Jacobs says. “I’m so lucky that I get to play
such a crucial part in changing people’s lives for the better.”
START YOUR ENGINES Jacobs will continue his goal of making a difference in the lives of others by auctioning off a custom car at the 49th Annual BarrettJackson Scottsdale Auction, taking place this month from Jan. 11 to 19. Proceeds from Jacobs’ car will benefit the C4 Foundation. The organization – named in honor of Charlie Keating IV, a Navy SEAL who died in action in Iraq – utilizes science-based programs to support U.S. Navy SEALs and their families. “This charity really resonates with me,” Jacobs says. “Our Navy SEAL community puts their lives on the line every day to keep us safe and free. Our support is important for their morale, so we need to let them know that we appreciate them and their sacrifice.” In order to accomplish this goal, the C4 Foundation provides a variety of workshops and classes to help strengthen family ties for active duty SEALs, placing an emphasis on gratitude, communication and positivity. Their research-backed programs aim to combat potential strain on families due to the stress of deployment and injuries suffered in training and combat. “I always want to support our Navy SEALs in any way that I can,” Jacobs says. “Our special ops are literally our last line of defense. Without them in place to protect our freedom, who knows what our lives would be like?” The car being auctioned, a custom 1968 Plymouth GTX coupe that Jacobs has owned for 20 years, embodies the spirit of partnership. The showstopping vehicle – decked out with a custom paint job and wheels in collaboration with Foose – is a manifestation of the same tireless dedication that the duo invests in their Overhaulin’ builds. The ride also boasts a 392 Hemi swap from Mopar Performance, installed by Mark Worman and his team from the show Graveyard Carz, in addition to a MagnaFlow exhaust, a Magnumforce K-Member suspension, and a Hotchkins front sway bar. This isn’t the first time that Jacobs and Foose have joined forces to support a good cause. In 2006, the Overhaulin’ team remodeled a 1993 Hummer H1, a makeover that included inspiring images of troops and correspondents on the body to commemorate the journalists who risked their lives to tell the stories of the war in Iraq. After CNN used the vehicle for wartime coverage, it was auctioned at the 2007 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction for the Fisher House Foundation, which serves military and veterans’ families by providing free housing while loved ones receive treatment. This year, Jacobs will also be reprising his role as the host of MotorTrend’s live broadcast of the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, taking guests through the action at the eight-day event in what he calls a dream job. “Getting to be around and talk about all of the amazing cars is something I’d do for free – but don’t tell them that!” At the end of the day, Jacobs is happy to have been able to serve others through both his philanthropic endeavors and his career. “Making a difference in people’s lives is a humbling experience,” Jacobs says. “It’s true that if you do something you love for a living, you’re never really at work.”

LORRAINE TALLMAN CEO, Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels In 2009, Lorraine Tallman’s 9-year-old daughter Amanda Hope was diagnosed with leukemia. After a nearly three-year battle, Amanda went into remission. “Then, in 2011, she complained of a headache and nausea,” Tallman says. “But test results showed the symptoms were unrelated to a relapse.” The family brought Amanda home, but hours later, the left side of her face became paralyzed. “We rushed her back to the hospital. It was a brain tumor,” Tallman says. “We lost our angel nine months later.” But not before Amanda accomplished some amazing things, such as visiting the Vatican and making Tallman promise to help other kids like her. “She hated the lack of privacy during chemo treatments,” Tallman says. “So, we came up with ComfyCozy’s for Chemo, clothing designed to have pockets, zippers and snaps to allow port access without requiring children to expose themselves.” Tallman launched the free clothing line months after Amanda’s passing and obtained approval on an overarching nonprofit – Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels (www.amandahope.org) – soon after. “Under that umbrella, we began offering the ComfyCozy’s and hosting spa days, teen nights, craft days and more for children fighting illnesses. We also expanded to provide free counseling, art therapy, play therapy, and supportive services to children and their families,” Tallman says. As CEO, Tallman has recently been focused on advocacy and innovation. “Amanda endured tremendous pain whenever medical teams had difficulty accessing her port,” Tallman says. “So we partnered with Bard, a medical device company, to help ease this pain for others.” The result is the AllPoints Port Access System Port Stabilizer, FDA-approved in 2018, which assists with needle insertion into ports and lessens the chance of pain. “Thanks to a grant from the Fiesta Bowl, I am also publishing a book, Butterfly Kisses, this year, which will focus on helping families who are going through similar situations as we did,” Tallman says.

HEATHER ALLEN President and CEO, HALO
Heather Allen is proof that someone can be both a dog and a cat person. A Valley native, Allen grew up a dog lover – so much so she participated in a 4-H program at 12 years old to learn how to best care for her Pomeranian, Bear. “We even competed in dog shows together, winning several,” Allen says. After finishing high school in 1991, she began working at PetSmart. It was while working there, and after connecting with the kitten adoption team on-site, that Allen and her mom Michel began fostering cats for a local nonprofit called Kitty Love. They provided care for as many as 50 at one time – and eventually up to 30 dogs – spending most weekends attempting to get them adopted. In between, Allen married her high school sweetheart and worked toward her college degree while working full time. “In 1994, Kitty Love transitioned from helping get animals adopted to a spay and neuter advocacy group, so my mom and I founded HALO (www.halorescue.org) – short for Helping Animals Live On – to continue our work,” Allen says. They started the nonprofit, first from home, and continued to work there until they opened their first shelter and office in 2008. Last year, the organization celebrated its 25th anniversary. “All these years later, we have a thriving thrift shop and no-kill shelter,” says Allen, adding that her mom is still her partner while her sister and two of her close friends are also involved in their work. HALO also partners with other rescues locally and in Mexico, including Barb’s Dog Rescue in Rocky Point, an organization that helps legally bring dogs into Arizona to be adopted. “To give perspective, we adopted out 200 animals in 1994 out of our homes. Last year, between Barb’s and our other partners, plus the animals we’ve taken in, we adopted out over 4,000,” Allen says.

MIKE NEALY
Executive director, Fiesta Bowl Mike Nealy grew up in a small Minnesota town. His father was the local doctor, and before that, his grandfather was the same. “Like them, I wanted to help people, but I knew medicine wasn’t my path,” Nealy says. A standout athlete in high school, he began coaching youth football upon graduation in 1983. Over the next 10 years, while earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business at the University of Minnesota and getting his start at a Fortune 500 company, Nealy continued to coach, winning eight league championships along the way. “I hung up my whistle in 1994,” Nealy says. “But sports would come calling again soon enough.” That opportunity came in 2001, when the NHL’s Minnesota Wild recruited him for their leadership team. Then, in December 2005, the then-Phoenix Coyotes reached out. “If you’ve been in Minnesota in December, you’ll understand why sunny Phoenix was so appealing,” says Nealy, who became the team’s executive vice president and CFO in 2006, advancing to president and CEO in 2010. During his time with the Coyotes, Nealy also got involved in local volunteer efforts, joining the boards for both the then-Partnership for a Drug-Free America’s local chapter and the Fighter Country Partnership Foundation. “My dream became finding a way to marry my business, sports and volunteer passions,” Nealy says. “Enter the Fiesta Bowl, which not everyone knows is a nonprofit.” Bringing it full circle, the former youth football coach now serves as the Fiesta Bowl’s football coach (www.fiestabowl.org). In 2014, Nealy became the organization’s executive director. Since taking on the role, Fiesta Bowl has raised its status in local philanthropy, donating more than $10 million each year to hundreds of local youth, sports and education-focused organizations. It also launched Wishes for Teachers in 2016, which annually gifts $5,000 grants to 200 Arizona teachers so they can invest in their classroom and student needs, including field trips, technology and supplies.

CARRIE BORGEN
Executive director, Sojourner Center Growing up, Carrie Borgen was fascinated by the social sciences. “However, it would be business that I studied in college, primarily because I understood the importance of skills such as accounting and finance,” says Borgen, who not only worked her way to an undergraduate degree, but put herself through graduate school and earned her CPA designation while working full time. “In 2006, after working as a health care executive, I purchased two companies, merged and then sold them and founded a consulting firm,” Borgen says. In 2015, she was introduced to Sojourner Center (www.sojournercenter. org) as part of a consulting engagement. Two years later, she got a call from the then-chairman of the board. “He asked if I had any hours available to assist Sojourner,” Borgen says. “When I asked how many, he said all of them.” At the time, the organization, which is one of the largest domestic violence shelters in Arizona, was losing nearly $2 million per year. Borgen joined Sojourner as executive director and got it back into the black within a year. And by then, she was hooked on its critical mission. Today, Borgen and Sojourner are undertaking several groundbreaking initiatives. In addition to the life-saving programs and services it provides to women, children and their pets, Sojourner, in conjunction with the CACTIS Foundation, is leading a collaborative of law enforcement entities, research scientists, and social workers working to address the societal epidemic of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in domestic violence. Through this, Borgen says, “We can better serve the women under our care as well as share what we’ve learned with our national collaborators. The program has already found that over half the women who come to Sojourner have experienced a head injury as a result of abuse.” As such, Sojourner is now modifying training for the entire staff, hiring full-time TBI advocates, and will be expanding the wellness programming significantly.

JERI ROYCE CEO, Esperanca
In the U.S., access to care and necessities such as health, clean water, clothing and food is something many people just have. “But that’s not the case everywhere,” Jeri Royce says. As a child, California-born Royce and her family vacationed in Mexico. “We frequently spent time interacting with the local community,” Royce says. From a young age, she was struck by the welcoming-but-impoverished families in Mexico – so much so that she and her sister hosted bake sales and sold mistletoe back home to raise funds to help. Over the years, giving back has remained important to Royce. She began her career in the nonprofit sector, and when her family moved to Phoenix in 2003, she launched a nonprofit consulting firm. “It was while consulting that the board of directors asked if I would consider stepping in as the interim CEO of Esperanca,” Royce says. “That was mid-2017.” The Phoenix-based nonprofit Esperanca (www.esperanca.org) works in some of the most vulnerable communities worldwide by coordinating volunteer surgical missions and connecting with local partners to provide ecological housing, disease prevention and education, food security, and clean water. Domestically, Esperanca serves the Valley’s most under-resourced populations with health education and resources. “The way Esperanca provides people with knowledge and access to care – with the utmost respect to individual cultures and beliefs – resonates with so many.” In November 2017, Royce learned she had breast cancer. Thanks to preventive screening, it was discovered early. When faced with her own health crisis, Royce felt a renewed commitment to be of service to those who are not as fortunate. In March 2018, with her breast cancer in remission, Royce transitioned to full-time CEO of Esperanca. This year, Esperanca will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Among the notable anniversary events is a free public screening of PBS’s The Visionaries, a popular docuseries narrated by Sam Waterston that examines their work here and abroad, in February.

Christopher Zachar
Willing to Take the Next Step For His Clients
C
hris Zachar of Zachar Law Firm, P.C. has been practicing law for 27 years, and continues to aggressively represent personal injury victims. “I always knew I wanted to be in a profession where I could help people. After deciding on personal injury law, I have not looked back since,” he says. The thing that makes Zachar Law Firm stand out from other firms is the work. “Attorneys are supposed to work for you,” says Zachar. “If someone’s been involved in a car accident and they start researching law firms, how do they choose the right one? How do they know the real trial lawyers vs. the pretenders? They should be willing to file a lawsuit, to take that next step if necessary. Not all firms are prepared to do that. We are, and we do.” As a Certified Specialist in Personal Injury and Wrongful Death trial lawyer, Chris deals with insurance companies and lawsuits on a daily basis. In Chris’s opinion, if you need a personal injury
lawyer, find one who focuses only on injury law, not someone who ‘dabbles’ in it. How do you know the difference? “Always ask your attorney about their jury trial record,” he advises. They don’t have one? They say something like “all of my cases settle”? Hmmm... The Arizona Board of Legal Specialization identifies lawyers who have “demonstrated superior knowledge, skill, integrity, professionalism and competence in a specific area of law, to better serve the public.” Being recognized as a Certified Specialist is not a minor thing—it truly means something. Out of 18,500 lawyers in the Arizona State Bar, only 122 are Certified Specialists in injury/death law. Chris takes great pride in being a Certified Specialist and a trial lawyer, and the results for his clients speak for themselves. Zachar’s highest amount earned for a client was for a wrongful death case in 2015 against the state of Arizona for two families who had family members killed in a car crash. The jury came back with a
verdict for his clients of 45 million dollars. Chris grew up in the Midwest and still considers himself just a good, hardworking Midwestern boy. His incessant drive to do good translates into relentless representation for his clients. His credo: “’Good luck’ happens when hard work meets opportunity” (but, he says, the hard work must come first). His drive to help people extends outside of the office. “My wife Michelle and I feel very blessed with three great, healthy kids. It is our desire to support charities around Phoenix that make a difference in children’s’ lives,” including the Ronald McDonald charities, PCH and St. Vincent de Paul. Is there a recipe to Chris’s success? “Yes,” he says. “Being willing to continue the fight, to file the lawsuit when needed to get the best result for your client when no one else is willing to.” Contact Zachar Law Firm at www. My Sister’s Closet is dedicated to our community
B
ack in 1991, no one knew what sustainability was. Discerning consumers didn’t want to wear other people’s used clothing – luxury or not. Nevertheless, we had this crazy idea that buying and selling high-end used items could be good business if we created an experience that equaled traditional retail. That meant designing a store that looked, felt, and smelled like a trendy boutique, not like some dingy thrift shop. Impeccable customer service was non-negotiable. With our plan in place, we opened the first My Sister’s Closet store in 1991 in Central Phoenix. After 28 years, our stores continue to show vibrant year-over-year growth. In the retail world, that’s rare. Today the resale bandwagon is jam-packed with wannabe stores, some of which are even backed by venture capitalists. However, My Sister’s Closet continues to be the gold standard for the industry. One of the areas where we have always forged a new path is our
dedication to community involvement. For 28+ years we donated unsold merchandise to the thrift stores of our favorite nonprofits. We came to realize those stores weren’t producing as much revenue as they could have been for their organizations. It was time to raise the bar and raise it we did. In 2014, we opened our own 501(c)3 thrift store in Chandler. This would be the first brick and mortar initiative of our nonprofit arm, My Sisters’ Charities. Over $100,000 was generated in less than six months and in 2018 the store netted $300,000. This helped propel us to making a $1 million donation to the Arizona Humane Society. My Sisters’ Charities also proudly supports Fresh Start Women’s Foundation, Defenders of Wildlife, Phoenix Art Museum, SW Wildlife Center, and Rancho Coastal Humane Society (San Diego), to name a few. As community leaders, the sisters also serve as board members for some of Phoenix’s most respected organizations.
Ann currently sits on the Board of Directors for both the Arizona Humane Society and the Phoenix Art Museum, after previously serving on the boards of Fresh Start, The Nature Conservancy, and SW Wildlife Conservation Center. Tess was recently named a Trendsetter in 2019 for her charitable work for the Arizona Humane Society, Fresh Start, SW Wildlife Center, and the Phoenix Art Museum. We plan to make the 20’s roar! Initiatives are being rolled out that will yield even higher quality inventory, improve customer service, and enhance the look and feel of the stores. We’re as committed to our brick and mortar locations as we were back in 1991. We might have graduated from the school of hard knocks when we started out, but as our mom taught us, “Until you fail, you don’t succeed.” Contact My Sister’s Closet at info@mysisterscloset.com or www.mysisterscloset.com.

How Lisa Westcott helps many
L
isa Westcott fell in love with real estate back in the 1990’s when working for the original developer of the Scottsdale Four Seasons, and became a licensed Realtor in 2002. “I love my career. I am very fortunate for the privilege of helping people to buy or sell their home,” she says. As a part of The W Group with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty, Lisa is loyal and dedicated to working tirelessly for her clients. As a result, over 95% of their business comes from repeat and referral clients. “For me, it’s about commitment, knowledge, and integrity. My professional philosophy is to always do the right thing, even when no one is looking,” Lisa says. It is through her high integrity and impeccable standards that she has earned herself a position among the top 1% of Arizona’s Realtors and ranked as the #1 Realtor at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International two years in a row. She was also named one of the Top Women
in Real Estate, Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate, and is a Certified Luxury Home Specialist. In addition, Lisa has her Broker’s license, affording her clients the topmost expertise in the real estate industry. Lisa’s passion for real estate is evident with her client interactions—whether it’s staging, marketing, negotiations, or a showing. “Success, to me, is going the extra mile to create an experience any client will enjoy and feel confident with my expertise, knowledge, and commitment to them,” she says. Rest assured that Lisa will guide you in finding the right home for you and your family. Clients new to the area—including international clients—will appreciate her decades of local Scottsdale area experience and insight with current market trends to aide in negotiating the strongest sale of homes. Lisa is a luxury expert in addition to golf course properties. Lisa gives some advice for home buyers in 2020: “In my professional
opinion, buyers are switching gears to a more transitional, timeless style of interior design. Because our inventory is very low (and demand is high and only getting higher) buyers will have to find a location they love and a home they may need to remodel to make their own.” Beyond real estate, Lisa and her team remain active stewards of their community with routine volunteering and donations for causes near and dear to them. This past December, they volunteered with Feed My Starving Children, inviting clients and friends/family as well, and then treating them to a free meal as a thank you. “This is our first volunteer event that we opened to clients to participate in, and we look forward to doing more such events. We are very excited to give back and share that with our clients,” Lisa says. Contact Lisa Westcott at 480.229.3455 or lisa@thewgroupaz. com, 20909 N 90th Pl, Suite #209, Scottsdale, AZ 85255.

Noelle Creamer redefines wellness
N
oelle Creamer, Certified Health Coach and Founder of Wellness with Noelle, takes a holistic, open approach to help her clients make low-stress and nutritional lifestyle changes. “I like to describe health coaching as a mix between a nutritionist, therapist, educator, and cheerleader all wrapped in one,” she says. After being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, Noelle decided to take her healing and well-being into her own hands. “I was frustrated at the thought of having to use life-long pharmaceuticals that would do more harm than good to my body. I began transforming my own life. This led me down a path of developing a heart-felt desire to share everything I had learned with others.” Noelle believes that health and wellness are natural states of the body, so if people aren’t experiencing energetic, vibrant health right now, then something is preventing them from feeling it. “I believe we all have the answers within us. It’s my job to help my clients find those answers
and learn the fundamentals of nourishing the body so that they feel empowered to make choices that come from a deeper, wiser, more embodied place.” Noelle’s number one goal will always be to support as many people as possible to find their way to health. To her, it’s more than just nutrition, though. Noelle looks at the whole picture—stress management, sleep, relationships, career, body image, spirituality, emotional eating, and much more. “Health coaching is definitely a partnership. When clients keep an open mind, the possibilities for their transformation are endless,” she says. Always learning and growing, Noelle has certifications from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and the Institute of Eating Psychology. She is also certified in The Autoimmune Paleo Protocol and is currently pursuing her Board Certification in Health & Wellness from the National Board of Medical Examiners. In 2020, she will be offering more workshops and online programs for corporate wellness education.
Noelle cautions that there are no “quick fixes” when it comes to wellness and health. “None of those supplements or workout plans matter until you’re actually introducing healthy habits to your life. The only way to get sustainable results is to make permanent lifestyle changes, and health coaching helps you do just that,” she explains. To help clients navigate the confusing and contradicting world of health and wellness, Noelle offers one-on-one health coaching services in her Scottsdale office or virtually. She also offers educational workshops to companies and organizations locally in the Valley. “To be successful, you need to become independently healthy!” Noelle jokes, also adding that she views success as when her clients no longer need her services. As a former corporate attorney specializing in asset protection, Allison now uses the same skills of negotiation, market analysis, and contracts in the real estate business. “This provided a framework for my passion in real estate, and helps me navigate the waters of the luxury market in Scottsdale, a market that is always evolving and requires a great deal of adaptability from agents,” she says. Compared with other residential real estate groups, Allison’s business is unique with its boutique-style model in that the client can choose which services they would like included when selling their home. While many Realtors rely on rental services for staging, Allison manages her own staging company to offer her clients full staging services, which includes stateof-the-art furnishings. Allison also offers full professional videos, virtual Matterport tours, high
res photography, drone photography, and lifestyle shoots. “My marketing plan is unique in that it is a combination of custom-tailored marketing for the particular property. When I market a home, it will be seen by over a thousand websites.” All of her listings are featured in the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Her analytical, yet creative approach to transactions—be it buying or selling—earns her the highest praise from her clients. While her emphasis is on luxury real estate, she is making affordability a top priority in 2020. “I’m currently embarking on a project to expand affordability to a plethora of first-time buyers, but most notably, seniors and retirees.” With sales at an all-time high, Allison plans to continue providing exceptional white glove service tailored to each individual client. She will also introduce new components to her marketing plan, including a bi-weekly podcast and an increase in the number of her videos. “In an era of ever-changing technology, I’m confident
that our team can reach out to a broader audience through a greater focus in a wide scope of multimedia platforms,” she explains. “Maricopa County is the fastest growing county in the nation,” Allison says. “With low interest rates, and our population growth, it’s no surprise that sales over $500,000 in Scottsdale and the greater Northeast Valley are at record highs. In November 2019, our area broke sales records. This trend is predicted to continue as people continue to leave Southern California for the Valley of the Sun.” Allison is a Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist (CLHMS), giving her an edge in marketing and negotiation for luxury listings. “I’m thrilled to be able to play an active role in this rapidly evolving market, one that I’m confident will continue to grow as per optimistic forecasts and a growing population.” Contact Allison Cahill at 215.262.7066, allisoncahillslp@gmail. com, or www.allisoncahill.com.

Shahe Koulloukian
Changing the “crooked mechanic” ideology one car at a time.
I
magine you’re stranded on the side of the road with a dead car battery, so you call a mechanic shop. When your rescue comes, you’re surprised to see that it’s a 13-year-old boy, driving an old Ford truck, sitting on a stack of phone books so that he can see over the steering wheel. Imagine your even greater surprise when the boy handily jump-starts the car and sends you on your astonished way. You can’t believe he was able to do it, but you aren’t the only one learning a lesson that day – because the 13-yearold has just come to a valuable realization himself: even though grownups all own cars, they don’t all know how to be car owners. That boy was Shahe Koulloukian. And that realization was a very big part of what led him to grow up and open his very own mechanic shop. Since Mazvo Auto Car Care Center opened its doors in 1995, Koulloukian’s mission has been to not simply fix people’s cars, but to fix the public’s perception of his
industry – empowering his customers to understand their vehicles better so they can be their own first line of defense, but just as importantly, debunking the age-old “dishonest mechanic” stigma. At the heart and soul of Koulloukian’s business philosophy is teaching Mazvo’s customers to be familiar with their own vehicles, so they can be 100% confident that they aren’t being swindled by a crooked mechanic. He encourages them to ask questions, never hesitates to offer explanations in layman’s terms, and even offers car care classes – free of charge – to help clients go from intimidated to confident when it comes to automotive matters. Complete transparency and a willingness to educate has become the cornerstone of Koulloukian’s everyday practice. For nearly 25 years, he has dedicated himself to setting Mazvo apart from its competitors not by focusing on the bottom line, but on building these trusting relationships with clients, and his loyal
(and ever-increasing) client base reflects this. Though Mazvo has been in business for over two decades, Koulloukian approaches each day with the same gusto: “I treat every day like it’s my first grand opening, loaded with passion and enthusiasm that I’m going to not only help someone, but empower them forever,” he says. As automotive technology changes, Koulloukian himself never stops learning, and sharing that knowledge with those he serves. His unparalleled integrity and drive to provide above-and-beyond customer service has made Mazvo Auto Car Care Center not only a reputable place to have your car repaired, but a place where you can learn to understand why it needs repaired in the first place. That 13-year-old on the stack of phone books would certainly be impressed. Contact Mazvo Auto Car Care Center at 602.248.8711 or at Mazvo. com. 4610 N 7th Street, Phoenix.

“Y
our home (and my home) should truly be a place where time stands still,” says Jessica Wiebe, founder of Dwell Designs Co. Her goal is to offer a solution to an aesthetically tranquil and organized space. She will create functionality, comfort, and style to inspire the sense of feeling at home. From a young age, she loved decorating. “I feel like design and creating beautiful spaces has always been a part of who I am. I knew that what I surrounded myself with would have an impact on me, so I was constantly looking for ways to improve my surroundings.” Jessica founded Dwell Designs Co., an interior design and organized space company, to offer modern design solutions for the North Scottsdale and Paradise Valley area. Services include home staging, lighting design, remodeling and restoration, green/sustainable living spaces, material and hardware selection, furniture selection and placement, and more. Believing in close connection
between client and designer, she works closely to understand a client’s objectives, vision, and to maximize space. “The four walls of our homes are not just about providing our basic needs for everyday survival, but for creating an atmosphere where memories can be built and love can be fostered,” Jessica explains. After losing her mother at a young age, she has since learned how precious family is and how important it is to create a home that each family member can find comfort in, as well as a place to be celebrated. Now, she defines success as enjoying a cup of hot coffee at the end of a long day, the company of her children, and long walks with her husband each evening. Aside from creating beautiful spaces, Jessica is equally passionate about organizing and decluttering. “I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to thinking of new and creative ways to style my pantry or give my closet a face lift.” Jessica predicts that a huge trend
for 2020 will be minimizing the amount of harmful products brought into our homes. “Healthy, detoxified living is definitely going to be something that is on trend. I have seen a rise in individuals’ awareness of their health and how the objects we put in our homes can have either a positive or negative effect on our health.” She goes on to explain that bringing in natural elements will give off positive changes to our environment. Such elements include certain air purifying indoor plants to help pull toxins out of the air and improve air quality, soy and beeswax based candles, and detoxifying our homes with naturally derived essential oils. “I like to use natural fibers in my home with such things as linen, cotton, and flax bedding and throw pillows. Introducing wood, stone, and metals into living spaces helps bring more of the outdoors inside,” Jessica says. Contact Jessica Wiebe of Dwell Designs Co. at 480.787.8981 or DwellDesignsCo.com.

As the laws continually change, these attorneys remain focused on their field. “Laws are fluid and continue to evolve each year. We’re seeing many people leaning away from the huge law firm to the more personalized, concierge legal experience that we provide,” says Tyler Allen, who represents employees in employment matters. Tyler Allen Law Firm has an excellent reputation because of the results gained for their clients and the personal relationships that they build. In fact, many clients have become personal friends of the attorneys at this firm. “We care deeply about each case we take. While we can never guarantee a

Lindsay discovered a passion for justice and righting wrongs from an early age, and holds this belief outside of work by chairing animal rescue events and by helping shelter animals find their forever homes. For Tyler, the legal profession was a way to pursue his entrepreneurial spirit and passion for public service. One client fondly referred to Tyler as the perfect combination of compassion and pitbull. Outside of law, he works with charities who focus on improving the lives of children. “Our clients know that someone is fighting for them, taking the weight of their legal matter off of their shoulders and taking a genuine interest in their wellbeing. Many of our clients come to us for help during some of the most challenging times of their lives. Watching them
transform and take back their power is extremely rewarding.” The Firm prides itself on being a longterm partner for their client’s legal needs, not just a one-time service provider. They recently hired a new Client Relationship Manager to focus exclusively on the client experience and minimize the anxiety clients feel when faced with a legal matter. “This is a personalized service that is now included with all of our engagements, and the feedback we’ve received so far has been overwhelming. We know that when our clients feel supported not only professionally but emotionally, their cases can go more smoothly, which is ultimately what we want for our clients,” Tyler says. It is very rewarding to see my art in motion and to know that a portion of all Pax Philomena proceeds goes to support Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Phoenix.” Jean Marie, born in Kolkata, India to British-Indian parents has always been struck by Mother Teresa’s mission to care for the poorest of the poor. “Mother Teresa said that: ‘Peace begins with a smile.’ I believe that by wearing beautiful, bright clothing, we make people smile and do our part for spreading peace,” says Jean Marie. In fact, part of her inspiration for Pax Philomena lies within the name: Pax, Latin for peace and Philomena, her mother, which means ‘daughter of light.’ Pax Philomena brings a piece of
India and Italy, right here to the Valley. It fuses rich, hand printed Indian block prints and timeless Italian silks to create beauty, color, and comfort in clothing. Collections range from women’s dresses and tops to men’s shirts and boxers, to even a baby collection. The block printed cottons are artisanally crafted in Jaipur, India and the Pax couture silk line features Italian printed silk crepe of the highest quality. “We bring designer quality to the marketplace because we don’t want quality to disappear. Our one-size dress silhouette is universally flattering to every body type. It is a dress that makes women feel good about themselves, and looks fabulous on!” Jean Marie explains. Pax Philomena is primarily an online boutique; however, for locals, Jean Marie loves to invite clients by appointment to visit her atelier that is not open to the public. Inside this magical, historic adobe house-turned-studio one can enjoy a very personal experience, that Jean Marie
would ideally offer to all of her customers. For 2020, Jean Marie says her goal is to keep growing Pax Philomena and to “dress America.” Pax Philomena plans to expand its Italian silk collection and dabble further into the baby world. “There will be new, fun additions to the men’s collections, and I will make a foray into the jewelry world as well.” Dramatic colors, big botanicals, and geometrics are all on trend for clothing in 2020. The Future of Body Sculpting Dr. William Hall is changing the game
D
r. William Hall, founder of Infini Cosmetic Associates, has always had a passion for medicine. By nature, he is fastidious and detailoriented, and he approaches surgery the same way. “I felt that I would excel in an area that required precision and a meticulous approach. Liposuction and cosmetic enhancement, as a whole, are very different than other areas of medicine with respect to the fact that there is a visible end result,” says Dr. Hall. Body sculpting continues to gain momentum as the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure each year. Infini Cosmetics is a true liposculpture and fat transfer specialty clinic, and it’s the only procedure they perform. “We are unique in that we focus on one procedure, while most cosmetic practices do many surgical procedures. We are fat specialists,” Dr. Hall says. Through on-going training and instruction with the best national and international specialists, Dr. Hall is able to
offer his clients the safest, most effective and advanced treatments. He is one of the founding inaugural members of the World Association of Gluteal Surgeons, an organization dedicated to improving patient safety and outcomes in surgery. “Modern liposuction has changed, and is not what most people think of it as. At Infini Cosmetics, we perform all our surgeries in the safest way possible under local anesthesia with micro incision sites. This allows our patients to recover and be back to basic activities in 24 hours,” Dr. Hall explains. “We strive to not only achieve great surgical precision, but also to treat our clients as we would want to be treated. That starts with honesty and only taking clients that we feel can achieve what they desire.” While Dr. Hall focuses solely on the surgical specialties of liposuction and Brazilian Butt Lift, Infini Cosmetic is also one of the largest Valley practices for non-invasive procedures like Botox, fillers,
skin care, and laser procedures. The practice is AAAHC accredited. Infini Cosmetics is bringing the future to their patients by offering the latest technology to further enhance liposuction results: Renuvion J Plasma Skin Tightening. This non-surgical procedure targets specific areas to refresh and tighten loose skin. “We are a very progressive practice, and demo and research all new technology related to body sculpting before bringing it in to use on our patients. We are skeptics because so many things don’t work as advertised. This technology, however, is an absolute game changer!” In 2020, Infini Cosmetics will continue to offer the very best in customer care and patient experience. “We are quality and patient oriented, not a growth oriented practice.” Dr. Hall says. As a third generation Custom Designer and Tailor, she followed her mother, Maria, and grandmother, Chapita. “I started sewing at an early age because I wanted different designs than what my mother would make for me,” Scylvia says. Scylvia has a true talent for what she does, working with both men and women for custom design pieces, tailoring, alterations, bridal accessories, fabric, and the best fitting bra. Size and style are no object for Scylvia; she looks at the shape of your face and body, and also your eyes. She doesn’t need to see you face to face in order to design and make your perfect garment, and you have a choice on everything you want down to the smallest detail. “I can custom make anything for men and women from just an idea or picture,” she says. In fact, her customers dubbed her ‘The Fairy Godmother of Fashion’ because of her gift to fix what seems
unfixable and to get it done for when they need it. “Most of my customers come to me because they know what they like and what they like is not necessarily what is trendy, even though we do stay in flow of the current fashions,” Scylvia says. “They are getting things custom made or redesigning what is already in their closet to look unique.” Scylvia’s designs and dresses have gone all over the world, having been seen at the Emmys, Oscars, Country Western Music Awards, and the Oprah Show, to name a few. She has been featured on numerous local TV channels, First Edition, Total Divas, Sonoran Living, the Arizona Republic, and more. “I’m also called ‘The Boob Whisperer’ for the expert bra fittings that I do. Your boobs can either make you or break you. If they look good, you look good and feel good, sexy, young (even if you’re old), thin (even if you’re heavy), and your clothes fit well.” Clients need to set an appointment
with her shop, with zero obligations to purchase bras from her. If you’re not in the market for custom designing, Danese Creations carries original designs ready-to-wear bridal gowns, cocktail dresses, blouses, and more. “My goals are the same as always: To solve my customers’ design and sewing problems effortlessly. To take the stress off their plate,” Scylvia says. “For me, it is about being helpful, caring, and constructive, and always knowing that my best is still yet to emerge.” A problem solver to her core, Scylvia is committed to helping men and women look and feel their best through perfectly designed clothing. “If you say it can’t be done, I find a way!” she says. “I live by these words that my father, Giacomo Danese, said: ‘Nothing is impossible. MOCKTAIL MOXIE BE WELL
Part of a comprehensive wellness routine is recovery – especially after intense exercise or, let’s be honest, a busy holiday season. To help, Scottsdale-based Balunsd is gearing up to open its second location this month at Scottsdale and Thunderbird roads, offering people – whether runners, yogis, pro athletes, or gym-goers – a place to recharge their muscles with stretching, an infrared sauna, a cold plunge and hot tub, cupping, massages, and compression therapy. Through the end of January, you can receive a founders monthly membership (Balunsd Prime) that includes access to both facilities for $79.99 and one guest day pass each month. www.balunsd.com.
As the calendar rolls into another year, people gravitate toward recharging and rejuvenating, particularly when it comes to what they consume. Taking a cue from this and the “Dry January” trend, Sushi Roku has rolled out a new mocktail menu featuring cocktails with no alcohol. But that doesn’t mean the beverages lack in taste or spirit. The colorful, tropical mocktails include the Coco Loco with coconut water, coconut syrup, lime and pineapple juice as well as the Zen Garden, a fusion of cucumber, mint, lemon, lime and pineapple juice with fizzy organic tonic water. www.sushiroku.com.
NEW DIGS
Mastro’s City Hall has unveiled a refreshed look after a four-month renovation. Patrons will notice a modernized ambiance throughout the steakhouse, including upgrades to lighting, art, furniture, and decor. Perhaps most notable is the updated outdoor patio for cozying up fireside, new tableside wine service, and a bottle display that wraps around the bar. The updates are complete with new menu items including sliced Japanese A5 wagyu and true Kobe beef – making City Hall one of only two venues in town that serve the latter. www. mastrosrestaurants.com.

THE NATURAL FAT SOLUTION
PRE OP - FAT TRANSFER TO UPPER 2/3RDS OF FACE WITH LIFT TO LOWER 1/3 OF FACE
POST OP - FAT TRANSFER TO UPPER 2/3RDS OF FACE WITH LIFT TO LOWER 1/3 OF FACE
Have you ever looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize the image staring back at you? Sunken eyes, cheeks, temples and lips tell you you’re melting away. How is it possible that the extra fat of your thighs, hips and abdomen will NOT melt away with diet and exercise, but your facial fullness and softness too readily deflates into nothingness. There’s a solution to this dilemma…the Natural Fat Solution. Why not use your hated body and thigh fat to correct the deflation of facial aging? Over the last 25 years, Doctor Andrew Wolin has been using fat harvested from each patient’s lower extremity and torso to rejuvenate, restore and reclaim their youthful facial form. A pioneer in the field of auto fat transfers, he has performed thousands of rejuvenating procedures on many patients who were reluctant to undergo more invasive surgery and were candidates for re-volumization rather than classic face lifting. Although Dr Wolin does incorporate fat grafting in many of his facelift patients, he has found that in many cases, fat alone will be an amazingly rewarding procedure and provide his patients with a phenomenal, natural and permanent tool against the deflation of aging. Another benefit is the definite improvement in the health and quality of the re-inflated skin. It appears that the simultaneous transfer of Adult Stem Cells with the Fat Cell Transfer contributes to the amazing results…. a result that is greater than the sum of all the parts. Call today and see if you’re a candidate for the Natural Fat Solution.
Dr. Andrew Wolin has been a leader in the plastic surgical community of Scottsdale since 1985, and his extensive years of experience benefit each patient. His top-notch reputation as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and for cutting-edge procedures draws patients from near and far. The Spa at Civana Beyond Civana’s 22,000-square-foot spa, the entire resort is structured as a wellness center and restorative escape. As such, there is a full menu of daily programming throughout the resort that draws upon varied disciplines and techniques, including fitness (such as aerial yoga), culinary (such as juicing workshops), and personal and spiritual growth. But of particular note are the more mystical offerings, including the 45-minute Angel Messages program and the 50-minute Spirit Animal workshop, both free to resort guests. During each, a professional guide helps guests use cards to deepen their understanding of themselves and how they interact with the world around them. At Civana Wellness Resort & Spa. www.civanacarefree.com. The Phoenician Spa Discover a new level of spiritual wellness and revitalize your inner peace during the Illumination Through Tarot treatment at The Phoenician Spa, available for 50 or 80 minutes for $165 or $245, during which one of the intuitive guides will lead you through a fulfilling session personalized to your own desires and needs. Before the treatment, you will be able to express the specific areas you would like to focus, allowing the guide to cater to your individual journey. Using the ancient art of tarot, the guide will then read your cards and delve into a deeper understanding of your life and overall being. Through this experience, you will explore new answers to your challenges and how to overcome these obstacles. At The Phoenician. www.thephoenician.com. Spa Avania Spa Aviana combines science with the art of healing via its Spa.Wave Binaural Acoustic & Dynamic Stimulation programs. Available for 30 or 60 minutes and ranging in price from $75 to $150, this system was initially developed by scientists to treat post-traumatic stress disorder in American veterans. After the computer-controlled acoustic and vibrational therapy was found to benefit the greater population, it was launched at Spa Aviana to help guests achieve the deepest possible level of relaxation. Similar to meditation, specific sounds slow down mental activity, and vibrational frequencies act specifically on the body’s chakras. The treatment is available on its own and as an add-on to other services or packages. At Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch. www.hyatt.com. Joya Spa Joya Spa has four distinct meditation treatments – each 60 minutes and $159 – in addition to its traditional and naturopathic services, which include cupping, acupuncture and IV therapy. First, one-on-one private meditation is offered for those who wish to learn the basics of the practice. Then, there are the Sacred Sleep & Healing Dreams and Stress Management Meditation programs, the former helping quiet the mind to decipher one’s dreams and the latter helping increase focus while reducing tension and stress. Finally, there is a hypnotherapy option, which delves into the subconscious to help overall well-being. At Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia. www.joyaspa.com.

WHIMSICAL WANDERLUST Shannon Bundschuh adds artistry to tokens of travel
BY HEATHER LYNN HORVAT
Shannon Bundschuh’s artistic endeavors are a true reflection of her business name: Artful Melange, meaning “artful mixture.” Using a variety of mediums, Bundschuh creates one-of-a-kind art ranging from painting and macrame to mixed media and jewelry. But it’s Bundschuh’s hand-painted vintage globes and hanging maps inspired by her travels that continue to steal the hearts of those with a wandering spirit. “Vintage globes are so very intriguing to me – the color, the age, the wear and tear, the story behind each one,” says Bundschuh, who tries to date each globe that she finds, with the oldest dating to around 1920. “I am often absorbed in looking at the countries and how they have changed over time.” With travel lovers and wanderlust seekers in mind, Bundschuh’s hand-lettered vintage globes – on which she writes meaningful quotes and messages – are often used as a unique wedding guestbook, a graduation gift, a baby room night light (yes, some globes light up!), and a way to display travel memories with push pins. Bundschuh enjoys working on these personalized pieces, using oil-based permanent ink to customize each globe. “Being able to think about the globe’s intended recipient displaying it, using it, and maybe even putting pins in it to mark their travels brings me joy,” she says. Growing up in a family of artists – her grandmother drew and painted while her mom quilted, crocheted and knitted – Bundschuh was fascinated with all forms of art from an early age. She went on to study fine art and graphic design at The University of Arizona, working in the graphic design field until making the switch to a fulltime artist, in addition to a full-time mom, in 2010. “I was doing so many crafts and paintings and giving them as gifts,” she says. “When I saw a friend selling her pieces at Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market, I decided it was something I wanted to get into doing as well. It’s an incredible feeling when complete strangers buy my pieces.” Bundschuh, who has been selling her artwork at Junk in the Trunk since 2013, takes classes in all kinds of art to continually expand her repertoire. “The mediums I use really have to do with my mood and what inspires me at the moment,” she says. “I am currently diving into metalsmithing, which has me enamored with the process and working with fire,” she says. Bundschuh’s vintage globes and mixed media canvases can be found at her Etsy shop, Artful Melange (www.artfulmelange.etsy. com), while her jewelry is available at her shop, Carry A Torch, LTD (www.carryatorchltd.etsy.com). All of her art will also be at the next Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market in April at WestWorld of Scottsdale. “The art, for me, comes naturally,” Bundschuh says. “Those who can smoothly brand themselves, run a business, and make money from their art are who I tend to be most inspired and influenced by.”

PINHOLE SURGICAL TECHNIQUE:
A revolutionary new way to achieve your best smile! BEFORE A University Study revealed that 89% of patients over 20 years old have gingival recession. Receding gums can be caused by gum disease or because of excessive brushing, certain medications, clenching or grinding, or smoking. Not only are receding gums painful and unattractive, but the actual bone underneath is being lost, leading to tooth loss. The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a revolutionary procedure that solves the problem of receding gums. PST offers natural-looking, long-lasting healthy smiles to those suffering from receded gums, giving patients a beautiful new smile in as little as an hour. Since nothing more than local anesthesia is needed, patients can return to work after their appointment. The Pinhole Surgical Technique takes the place of traditional gum grafts, with minimal discomfort or pain. In fact, recovery time is virtually nonexistent with PST. The results are more predictable, less noticeable, and will last as long as any other gum correction procedure. Stunning new smiles can be seen immediately. Dr. Erik Svans, DDS was among the first dentists to study the Pinhole Surgical Technique under its inventor, Dr. John C. Chao, DDS in 2014. Since introducing
AFTER PST to his practice, Dr. Svans has seen very predictable and reliable long-term results. There is no scalpel, incision, or stitches with PST, making it virtually painfree. This innovative procedure uses a .1 inch “pinhole” opening to reposition a patient’s receded gumline to its healthy, natural location. After repositioning the gum tissue to cover the exposed root surface, Dr. Svans strategically places collagen through the Pinhole to stabilize the tissue in place. The collagen resets the gum tissue and makes it stronger than before. Patients can return to normal eating that very night.
BEFORE
Previously, treatment for receded gumlines was very painful and required cutting donor gum tissue from the roof of a patient’s mouth. The donor tissue was then stitched to the receded site, which had also been cut or “flapped” in preparation for the graft. Recovery for this traditional surgical technique requires two to three weeks with prescription pain medicine. In contrast, PST is a kinder, gentler procedure since it only requires a repositioning of existing gum tissue over the exposed root surface. With PST, Dr. Svans can treat one to all teeth in one visit, in as little as 30 minutes. Patients are amazed with the results, instantly falling in love with their healthy, beautiful new smiles. If you’re ready to stop living with the pain and embarrassment of recessed gums, the Pinhole Surgical Technique may be right for you! Schedule a complimentary consultation by calling Dr. Erik Svans at 480.219.8760 or visit www.PinholeAZ.com.

2020 TOYOTA GR SUPRA The revival of this time-honored sports car is well worth the wait BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS 2020 Toyota GR Supra
After a two-decade hiatus, the Toyota Supra – originally sold in the U.S. from 1979 to 1998 – is returning as a fifth-generation two-seat coupe. The newest Supra was built as a collaboration between Toyota and BMW, sharing the same platform and engine as the latter’s Z4 roadster. The coupe boasts a 3.0-liter, 335-horsepower, twin-scroll turbocharged inline V-6 engine. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission available. When coupled with the standard launch control, these factors rocket the Supra from a resting stop to 60 mph in a scant 4.1 seconds, making it the quickest production Toyota ever. Based on first impressions, the Supra is one of the most sensational and gripping vehicles on the market today. The acceleration is undoubtedly impressive and the 365 pound-feet of torque fully engages at just 1,600 rpm, delivering the sonorous sounds of power and pushing its occupants deep into the heavily bolstered bucket seats. The paddle shifters behind the steering wheel deliver seamless, lightning-quick shifts. The super sticky tires offer superb handling and accent the smooth steering, while the huge Brembo brakes handle the heavy snubs with

zero fade. Toyota’s Gazoo Racing suspension – where the GR in the name comes from – and the perfect 50/50 front/rear balance lets Supra carve through corners on the racetrack. Inside, the cabin feels more like a BMW than a Toyota. The sporty seats are comfortable, with enough room for most taller drivers. Cargo space is slightly limited, though there is room for most daily needs. The touch-screen infotainment system has a 6.5-inch display with the option to upgrade to 8.8 inches with navigation and Apple CarPlay. A Driver Assistance Package is available for an additional $1,195 and includes safety features such as blind spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, dynamic cruise control, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Supra is available in three trim levels: 3.0, 3.0 Premium and the Launch Edition model, tested here and limited to just 1,500 units. Overall, there’s a lot to like about the new Supra, from its audacious, in-your-face-styling to heart-pounding driving excitement. It’s a car that begs to be driven on both the road and on the track, and after years’ worth of suspense, it certainly doesn’t disappoint.

SKY-HIGH SPECTACULAR Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas offers private helicopter experience of a lifetime BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
The Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas, a luxury nonsmoking and nongaming hotel located on the Strip adjacent to the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, is taking the guest experience to new heights – quite literally – with its Natural Wonders Package, starting at $7,550 per couple, inclusive of taxes and resort fees. Available throughout 2020 to resort guests only, the package features a private helicopter tour for the ages, and so much more. It begins (and ends) with round-trip car service to and from the airport. Once at the hotel, the package includes a two-night stay in either a 550-square-foot deluxe room with a view of the Strip or an upgraded option to the 1,100-square-foot one-bedroom suite with a king bed, a marble master bathroom, a living room with a pullout couch, and a powder room. A bonus: All suites are located on floors 35 to 39 to ensure the ultimate view of Sin City both during the day and when it comes alive at night. But as gorgeous as the view from either the room or suite might be, it will pale in comparison to the next – and signature – portion of the experience. After a private transfer to nearby Maverick Helicopters, guests are whisked into the clouds for a five-hour helicopter and land tour. The journey
begins by flying over the Valley of Fire State Park, a 46,000-acre nature preserve located 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas and named for its stunning red Aztec Sandstone formations throughout, which often appear to look as though they are on fire when the sun’s rays hit just right. From there, the flight heads to the Grand Canyon, where it lands 3,500 feet below the West Rim. Once safely out of the vessel, guests are served a gourmet picnic lunch, which includes Champagne, beer and wine, courtesy of the Four Seasons’ culinary team. The menu changes regularly and is based on seasonality as well as guest preferences and requests, but expect multiple courses featuring items such as lobster salad, Tuscan chicken, and caprese skewers. The final leg of the tour takes guests over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, and Downtown Las Vegas as well as the Strip. Before being transported back to the hotel, each guest is given a professional photo from the tour as a keepsake. Once back, the adventure need not be over. All Four Seasons guests have complimentary access to the hotel’s private pool as well as the entire Mandalay Bay pool complex nearby, which features a lazy river, three swimming pools, and a sandy beach. In addition, resort guests can enjoy discounted tickets to all Mandalay Bay concerts, shows and other performances, notably including Michael Jackson One by Cirque du Soleil. They can also book one of several dozen treatments at the Four Seasons spa, arrange for a curated personal shopping experience via the concierge, and partake in the on-site culinary offerings, including the lauded Charlie Palmer Steak and craft cocktail hot spot Press, all for an added charge. SNOW WAY!
Park City wows with awe-inspiring attractions all winter long
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS COURTESY OF WALDORF ASTORIA AND PARK CITY MOUNTAIN RESORT
Park City – located in Utah about 30 miles from Salt Lake City – has silver to thank for becoming the gold standard in U.S. winter escapes. First mined in the mid-1850s, Park City was the largest silver mining camp in the country by the late 1800s. It would continue to serve primarily as a mining town until the 1950s, when the price of silver took a steep dive. Desperate to save the region from becoming a ghost town, savvy promoters began marketing it as having “The Greatest Snow on Earth,” a play on the tagline of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, much like the Phoenix Open’s “Greatest Show on Grass” tagline. The rebranding worked like a charm. Today, Park City Mountain is home to the country’s largest ski resort (the term for the ski region as well as towns or villages hosting all things related to winter sports and activities in the area), featuring 330 trails, 43 lifts, and eight terrain parks across its 7,300 skiable acres. And at this time of year, the entire region comes alive in a way one has to see to believe.
Where to Stay The perfect visit starts with the perfect accommodations. Lauded by Forbes, Conde Nast and Travel + Leisure, the Waldorf Astoria Park City boasts a ski valet and slope-side access to Park City Mountain as well as 159 newly refreshed rooms, suites and private residences, each with new furnishings and decor, fireplaces and Waldorf signature bedding. The suites even have full-size kitchens with Viking appliances, plus washers and dryers. Beyond that, its spectacular 16,000-square-foot Waldorf Astoria Spa offers therapeutic and beauty treatments, and its signature restaurant, Powder, delights in providing sustainable, local and seasonal dishes. To keep warm, there are plenty of fire pits, in addition to a heated pool and hot tubs – including an adults-only hot tub. Hit the Slopes After settling in, it’s time to hit the mountain! Park City Mountain is one of the best places in the country to learn how to ski or snowboard thanks to the newly opened High Meadow Park. Family friendly and located midway up the mountain near the top of the Red Pine Gondola, High Meadow has a dedicated learning area with a wide-open, gently-graded slope and three adventure trails for easy progression. Another similar option, First Time Park offers skiers and snowboarders enclosed surface conveyors and beginner terrain as well as convenient access to the First Time Lift.

And then, of course, there's the Ski and Snowboard School, which offers children’s lessons; private lessons for individuals, families and groups; and specialty programs for every level of expertise (or lack thereof). Among the best programs available for those with some prior experience is the Peak-to-Peak Guided Mountain Tour, in which an expert guide takes you around the area to uncover the best runs and conditions on the mountain. The best choice for those who just want to get on the mountain and start shredding, the Epic Day Pass provides unprecedented flexibility and season pass discounts to guests skiing as little as one day. With the customizable pass, guests can unlock discounts of up to 50% off lift ticket prices by selecting the number of days they plan to ski or ride – from one day to seven days.
Beyond the Slopes Park City is also the site of a zip line adventure, a snow toboggan called the Alpine Coaster, snowmobile tours, and sleigh rides. For history buffs, the free Silver to Slopes Historic Mining Tour offers a guided ski tour that takes guests of all ages on an exploration of the region’s rich and colorful past. For some serious adverture-focused fun, be sure to visit Utah Olympic Park, which was originally built for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Today, it is both a designated U.S. Olympic Training Site and a popular tourist attraction, offering daily guided tours that include a ride up to the world’s highest Nordic ski jumps and one of the fastest sliding tracks in the world, a 2002 Olympic museum, zip line adventures, a bobsledding experience (for those 16 years or older), and both advanced-level and intermediate-level ropes courses. And finally, Park City is among the greatest après ski – the term for the entertainment following a day on the slopes – destinations in the world, with 16 restaurants on the mountain alone. Of particular note is the fine dining at The Farm Restaurant, an award-winning dinner spot that offers seasonal menus celebrating locally-sourced, sustainable cuisine. For more casual fare, the newly opened Tombstone BBQ, formerly a food truck, was so lauded for its house-smoked meats and homemade sauces that it built a permanent home last year. And if drinks are on your radar, don’t miss High West, the world’s first and only ski-in gastro-distillery; Umbrella Bar, located in Canyon Village below the mountain and known for its massive outdoor deck with 360-degree views and live music; and Old Town Cellars, located on the Historic Main Street and often touted as serving the “official wine of après.” Discover more at www.visitparkcity.com. CREATIVE CLASSICS Twists on pours made popular during Prohibition BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
2020 is the 100th anniversary of Prohibition. Ironically, that time also marked a massive increase in the popularity of several cocktails, even though they had to be enjoyed in secret. To mark the centennial, here are some updated takes on classics inspired by that era.
Modern 75 Modern Oysterbar Chophouse While the traditional French 75 is made with gin, Champagne, lemon juice and sugar, the Modern 75 has its own take. It has lemon juice and Champagne, but it also features St. Vivant Armagnac brandy and St-Germain in place of the gin for a fuller flavor profile. $15. www. modernoysterbarchophouse.com. The Old Fashion Salty Sow This drink may be a shortened version of the famed cocktail’s name, but it has far more flavors than its predecessor. It features, of course, whiskey, plus an orange peel and a cherry. The twist is a caramel-forward Demerara sugar cube, which hails from the exotic isle of Mauritius. The cubes are produced in volcanic ash, giving it a more full-bodied flavor. $11. www.saltysow.com. Silver Tulip Kelly’s at SouthBridge An inspired update to the gin fizz, which is made with gin, lemon juice, sugar, simple syrup and an egg white, this fan favorite opts for a fruitier spin. The gin and lemon juice are there, but the simple syrup is infused with raspberries and ginger beer replaces the egg white, giving the cocktail that signature fizz and a sweet pop. $14. www.kellysatsouthbridge.com. Amelia Mary Earhart Volanti Restaurant The Mary Pickford – white rum, pineapple juice, grenadine and maraschino liqueur – was a bigtime Prohibition-era cocktail. This twist, which combines the original name with Amelia Earhart as the restaurant is located at Scottsdale Airport, features pineapple, grenadine and amaretto as well as coconut rum, a clever addition given Earhart was lost in the tropical Bermuda Triangle. $11. www.volantiscottsdale.com.

Oxhopper Fat Ox Among the most popular after-dinner drinks during Prohibition was the minty, sweet Grasshopper, known for its use of creme de menthe. This version keeps the signature ingredients: creme de menthe, Fernet Branca Menta, and creme de cacao. But, it’s served in a Collins glass versus the usual martini glass, with the addition of egg whites, soda and volcanic black sea salt. $16. www.ilovefatox.com. Cold Brew Old Fashioned The Vig As the name suggests, The Vig’s take on the Old-Fashioned adds High Brew cold-brew coffee to the recipe, which also includes Four Roses bourbon and a combination of Orange Sunshine and Figgy Pudding Bitters, both by AZ Bitters Lab. The result is a rich, robust take on the ultimate cocktail classic. $12. www.thevig.us. Pineapple Yuzu Mojito Tommy Bahama Though the mojito originated in Cuba centuries before Prohibition, it didn’t gain popularity in the U.S. until it made its way onto secret speakeasy menus. This version amps up the island flavors by using Cruzan Citrus Rum and then muddling it with pineapples and mint before adding in yuzu syrup, which is highly fragrant and a bit tart, and a splash of soda for pop. $11.50. www.tommybahama.com. Fro-Mosa Mowry & Cotton Among the easiest ways to disguise alcohol was by pairing it with juice. Hence, the rise of the mimosa during Prohibition. At Mowry & Cotton, the mimosa gets an upgrade with freshly made sorbet – blood orange, raspberry or passion fruit – versus orange juice (or try all three in a flight!). $9; flight, $18. www.mowryandcotton.com.

Though Bourbon & Bones is often lauded as a contemporary steakhouse and for its 320-bottle selection of bourbons, whiskeys and scotches, it’s also a standout place for seafood. Of particular note is executive chef Kevin Gage’s Pan Seared Scallops ($35), which are flown in weekly from Hokkaido, Japan, a region known for exceptionally rich, sweet scallops. To make, each scallop is delicately seared with olive oil before getting a touch of salt and pepper. The team then makes a citrus-infused beurre blanc and spoons it on the plate before placing each scallop on top. The dish is completed with a brunoise – a fine dicing – of red and yellow bell peppers, shallots, garlic, ginger and cilantro. The final touch is a garnish of colorful micro basil. The Cosmo Tamarindo debuts as part of the all-new ZuZu
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE
ZuZu, Hotel Valley Ho’s signature restaurant, recently completed its biggest renovation since opening in 2005. With the update, the lounge and dining room have been combined as one expansive space. Visually, midcentury modern and contemporary furnishings abound, and both a wine room – The Vine Vault – and a hidden private dining room have been added. The update also includes new offerings on the food and drink menus. Among the most popular of the new cocktails is the Cosmo Tamarindo ($14). “It offers guests something familiar, yet elevated and whimsical,” says PJ Baron, ZuZu’s beverage ambassador. It starts by combining zesty, fragrant Ketel One Oranje – which is infused with the essence of Valencia and Mandarin oranges – in a shaker with a little-known spirit to the United States called Destillaré Orange Curaçao. “Most people hear the word ‘Curaçao’ and immediately think of that super-sweet blue spirit,” Baron says. “This variation, however, is made by macerating orange peels and spices in apple brandy wine before adding botanicals and aging in a brandy barrel for three to six months, then finishing with orange blossom-infused honey.” The result is balanced with natural sweetness from the honey. It has bursts of citrus zest and warming baking spices on the nose and palate, perfectly complementing the vodka. “We then add cranberry, pineapple and lime juices, as well as sweet-and-sour tamarind, which gives a kiss of the tropics but still lets the spices and citrus shine,” Baron says. After being shaken with ice, the contents are poured into a coupe glass, and the stem is garnished with a tamarind-flavored candy wrapped in a corn husk, highlighting the Latin influence and adding a little flair. You’re a native to Arizona, yes? I was born at Williams Field Air Force Base and grew up in both Phoenix and San Diego. Our family moved back and forth depending on my father’s station during his time in the military. In 2001, I graduated from Alhambra High School in Phoenix. What inspired you to cook? With my dad often out to sea, my mom was tasked with caring for me and my three brothers while working full time, so I started helping in the kitchen. I enjoyed it so much that I signed up for the Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP) in high school. How did you get your professional start? Through C-CAP, I earned a scholarship to the Culinary Institute of America in New York City. After graduating in 2003, I got my start at Arizona Biltmore. Over the next 10 years, I worked my way up in the kitchens at Renaissance Phoenix Glendale Hotel & Spa and Hyatt Regency Orlando before joining the Omni Scottsdale in 2013. In 2016, I was named executive chef. Any highlights since taking the position? Prado is always a point of pride, but I am especially gratified that we added a tapas bar within the restaurant, which is a wholly different experience, as well as the Chef’s Kitchen Dinner Series. We also launched Taqueria Centro. There, we create mash-ups of American and Mexican dishes. Can you share an example of a mash-up? A favorite lately has been the carne asada fries. The skirt steak is marinated and cooked over a wood fire and then heaped on crispy fries along with homemade queso, pico de gallo, and locally sourced cheese. Any favorite and least favorite foods to eat yourself? I grew up in a Mexican household, so menudo, tacos and tamales are always at the top of the list. Conversely, I detest ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise in all forms. Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia, 4949 E. Lincoln Drive, Scottsdale; 480.627.3200; www.montelcuia.com.

PIZZA PARTY Unique slices of pie to try
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Valentina
Il Bosco Pizza Honey is the secret ingredient here. After Il Bosco makes its own dough and tops it with spicy pepperoni that cups when cooked as well as smoky, mildly fruity Italian Calabrian peppers, this work of art is finished with a drizzle of honey. The sweetness enhances both the salty and spicy flavors of the meat, while making the mozzarella seem even more marvelously melty. $16. www.ilboscopizza.com.
Pinsa Romano Margherita
Pizzicata A Roman take on a traditional pizza – with 85% less fat and 48% less sugar – expect a super crispy crust thanks to the way the dough is made using cold water and 100% GMO-free wheat, rice and soy. The menu has several options and toppings, but first-timers may want to opt for this classic pie with mozzarella and tangy red sauce. $11-$16. www.pizzicatausa.com.
Prosciutto & Fig
Sophia’s Kitchen The classic combination of salty and sweet come together perfectly on this pie and are complemented by a wood-fired crust. To make, a base of fig jam is spread over homemade dough and layered with fresh mozzarella, gorgonzola and thinly sliced prosciutto di Parma before being baked in wood-fired oven. It’s topped with arugula and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. $16. www.sophiasaz.com.
The Lou
Though at one time considered a “peasant meal,” pizza is now one of the singular most beloved menu items nationwide. Be it thin crust, deep dish, traditional or alternative, here are 12 truly sensational slices to order around town.

Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria This deep-dish beauty is billed as “so good we gave it his name,” meaning this is the pizza named after founder Lou Malnati. It starts with the garlic-infused Buttercrust. As the name implies, the dough is made using butter and garlic, and it goes through a 48-hour fermentation process to infuse flavor. It’s topped with spinach, mushrooms, sliced Roma tomatoes, and three cheeses – mozzarella, Romano and cheddar – before being finished with red sauce. $11.55-$27.75. www.loumalnatis.com.
Bianca
North Italia In addition to traditional pies, North offers gluten-free versions of its five signature pizzas, plus a pizza of the day, that won’t have you missing regular crust. A gluten-free guest favorite, the Bianca is North’s take on a white pizza using smoked mozzarella, aged provolone, ricotta and arugula. One of the secrets to eliciting such distinct flavor is the use of lemon oil in addition to the rich toppings. $17.50 (or $15 with traditional crust). www.northitalia.com.
with mushrooms, shaved Italian fennel sausage, and hand-pulled fresh mozzarella. For an added pop of flavor, it is sprinkled with ParmigianoReggiano before it’s cooked in a brick oven, which is in homage to the traditional Italian method of making pizza. $15. www.ciaograzie.us.
La Quercia Prosciutto Pizza
Fellow Osteria & Pizzeria Named in honor of the award-winning brand of cured meat that is among the stars of this pizza, expect equal parts earthiness, saltiness, smokiness and even herbaceousness. The dough is light and airy by design to allow the ingredients to shine, including prosciutto (of course), a hearty truffle zest, and an herb mix that is crisped to bring out even more nuanced flavors. $14. www.fellowosteria.com.
Calabrian Chile Pizza
EVO EVO owner Nick Neuman’s family hails from Rome and Milan, where he often had the chance to visit as a child, eating his way through the true Italian flavors. As such, EVO’s pizzas are made with the Italian spirit in mind. The Calabrian Chile Pizza is particularly authentic, using fresh dough sprinkled with a touch of Maldon salt, pomodoro sauce, prosciutto, and fresh mozzarella. The flavors are amped up by adding spiced honey for sweetness and arugula for a hint of bitterness and balance once done baking. $15. www.evoscottsdale.com.
The Little Nicky Smoked Salmon Pizza
KOVO Modern Mediterranean Served during weekend brunch, this pizza is reminiscent of a bagel and lox. It features a very thin, housemade crust and is topped with a combination of savory ingredients: garlic-herb cream cheese, smoked salmon, red onions, capers, and dill. Each item is layered on the dough, and the pizza is cooked in a wood-fired oven. Once out of the oven, the pizza is topped with a poached egg. $13. www.kovomedi.com.
Crust Simply Italian Rustic – and with family recipes that hail directly from Italy and Sicily – this white pizza offers simple, straightforward flavors. The dough is first topped with ricotta, garlic and mozzarella as the base before getting a generous smattering of fresh spinach and Roma tomatoes and a quick cook in the oven. $12.50-$26.50. www.crustrestaurants.com.
Mashed Pizza
PHX Beer Co. This mash-up of a pizza and potato skin is both the ultimate party pie and comfort food. It uses a base of a classic pizza dough and mozzarella but trades red sauce for mashed red skin potatoes. In addition, bacon, green onions and garlic puree take the place of more traditional toppings. $15-$19. www.phxbeerco.com.
Pizza Margherita
Marcellino Ristorante Marcellino recently added six wood-fired pizzas to its lunch menu, including this beauty, which features imported bocconcini mozzarella, fresh tomato sauce, and basil from the chef’s garden. The process of making the dough begins a day prior to baking so it may rise overnight before being cooked until crisp in a wood-fired oven. $15. www.marcellinoristorante.com.

OEB Breakfast Co. makes over the most important meal of the day
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Founded in Calgary, Alberta, in 2009 and with six locations around Canada, OEB Breakfast Co. chose Scottsdale as the home of its first U.S. location, which opened in late November. The concept is the brainchild of chefowner Mauro Martina, a native of Italy who trained across Europe before moving to Canada in 1992 for his first executive chef role at just 21 years old. He has worked in Michelin-star restaurants across the globe including Georges Blanc in France and Mosimann’s in the United Kingdom before opening OEB with a vision. “OEB stands for ‘Outstanding people,’ meaning our local suppliers, our staff and our customers; ‘Embracing evolution,’ meaning pushing culinary boundaries as well as welcoming growth; and ‘Bold food integrity,’ meaning farm-to-table practices and fresh ingredients,” says Martina, noting they’ve already partnered with Vital Farms in Scottsdale and plan to continue pursuing relationships with local suppliers. The menu itself is fresh, balanced and eclectic, with modern twists on classics. It is divided into nine main sections and includes farm-fresh fare, unique

sandwiches, and Blue Plate Specials. “Most know the term ‘blue plate special’ from diners, as it was usually their special of the day,” Martina says. “Our vision was to pay homage to the term while highlighting our seasonal specials. We even go so far as serving them on blue plates.” These diner-inspired dishes range from a croque madame with black truffle carpaccio to a luxurious lobster and shrimp crepe. The menu also features a breakfast poutine section, which takes the iconic Canadian comfort food to a whole new level. “Our breakfast take on the Canadian mainstay features nearly a dozen elevated versions of the dish. First, we swap the French fries for breakfast potatoes, but that’s only the beginning,” Martina says. “For example, we have the Gold Digga, which has a base of duck fat-fried herb potatoes topped with Saint Cyrille curds and brown butter hollandaise instead of gravy, not to mention poached eggs, Berkshire roast pork and black truffles.” Beyond that, OEB offers a variety of plays on eggs Benedict, lighter fare options, and combination egg dishes that blend scrambled eggs with omelets. On the sweet side, French toast lovers will rejoice at the delectable offerings, including banana cream pie-inspired, Nutellaadorned, and cheesecake-stuffed choices. There is also a Belgian waffle, a Frenchstyle crepe, and buttermilk griddle cakes. The space itself sprawls across 2,900 square feet with a contemporary interior featuring splashes of welcoming yellow accents. There is an open kitchen, and a full-service terrazzo bar serves as a centerpiece, offering hand-crafted cocktails, local beer, and Frizzante on tap. OEB is open weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and weekends and holidays from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. OEB Breakfast Co., 17757 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.597.4463; www.eatoeb.com.
