“I came to Dr. Gawley after going through 5 stressful years that seemed to age me overnight. I was in hopes of feeling good about myself again. He took the time to listen and hear my concerns and fears of not looking like my old self. With his talent and artistry he restored me to what I looked like not 10 but 20 years before. I have never received so many compliments on how natural and beautiful I look and feel. Thank you very much Dr. Gawley and your amazing staff.”

Here’s what some of our patients who have declared their Independence from Symptoms of Hormone Deficiency are saying: SottoPelle has really changed my life. I have so much more physical energy and mental clarity and don’t even have a headache anymore. The difference in just a few months has been truly amazing and I feel so much better every day.
I am 80 years old, struggling with fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, arthritis and heart disease, which have all improved since your hormone replacement therapy. I am able to do things I hadn’t been able to do in several years. Thanks, again and may God bless you as you help other people like me.
Joe DeLamielleure Rosemary D.
WOW! I’M LIVING WITH A NEW MAN!! (My husband’s) depression, which had been there for most of our marriage, was gone in a month within starting hormone therapy. His color improved, he looks rested. His whole outlook on life has improved, and he is soooo kind to me, I sometimes think to myself, What was your NAME again?
I am 52 years old and was used to the way I was feeling due to perimenopause and the gradual change it was giving me. I didn’t realize how long I had not been feeling like I used to when I was in my twenties and thirties until I started your (bio-identical) hormone therapy. It was almost, literally, an overnight change!
Pam O
Cheryl J
Thank you so much for taking the time so see me. I really started feeling much better in just a couple of days and I have got to tell you that I have energy that I never had before. Feeling so much more alert and active. For the first time in years I am chasing my husband around the house. Thank you so much for what you do. These hormones were exactly what I needed. Feeling so much younger and active. A true blessing for my life.
I live an active lifestyle and I am amazed at the increase (in energy). I no longer need ‘afternoon naps.’ I wake up refreshed and ready to go. The biggest surprise has been the mental and emotional change first noticed by my wife after natural hormone replacement therapy in Scottsdale. I am up and positive. Small problems no longer knock me down and create depression. Anxieties seem to have disappeared.

ow, it’s hot outside. Whew! To help you deal with the heat, we’ve got a super cool issue. Are you all-in for braving the outdoor temps? If so, check out the fun adult pool parties around town (pg. 56). Get ready to splish, splash and party! We also share our picks for resort pools (pg. 58). Want to know which have water slides? Which have lazy rivers? Or perhaps adult-only pools? We’ve got the low-down. We also share the fun swimsuits we picked to keep you fashionable while you’re lounging poolside. And, if you need a tote to carry your things in for your day at the pool, we’re loving the cute Kate Spade fish straw tote on pg. 67. If you find you need a break from the heat for a bit, head out of town for a short day trip for some of the fun summer festivals featured on page 50. Now, if you think the temps outside really aren’t so bad, and you’re ready to really spice up your day, embrace the heat with one of the five fiery food dishes we profile in our food section on page 100. We guarantee it—you’ll be sweating. Speaking of on fire, read our cover story on actress Sydney Scotia (pg. 42), who is taking the entertainment world by storm. A true triple threat, her star is definitely rising—and fast. We can’t wait to see how incredible her future will be! Stay cool during this heat and enjoy your summer!

PARADISE VALLEY VIA BENNETT LANE BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
“B

ack in the 1950s and ’60s, Napa [Calif.] was more orchards and dairy farms than wineries and tasting rooms,” laughs Randy Lynch, who spent many a summer in the area as a child exploring and waterskiing with his family. “But it was clear the area was special, even back then.

up close That’s why, years later, when his own family was seeking out a vacation home in the early 2000s, he piled them into the car to visit Calistoga, today a rustic-yetcharming town at the top of the Valley with the most picturesque views in the region. “By then, we were avid wine lovers, thanks to our travels to Italy,” says his wife, Lisa. “We found a lovely house on the Valley floor— which included 12 acres, four of them planted to produce cabernet right on the estate.” So, the Lynches, who already found great success in the business and marketing worlds in their own right, set out to re-model the home, grow their first harvest, and plan the rest of the property. “Unfortunately, we weren’t alone,” says Randy. “The market at that time very soft, and nobody was buying $100 bottles of wine right after the dot-com bust.” The only option was to find someone who would be willing to do a custom crush of their grapes, and then bottle it themselves as gifts for friends, family and employees. “Thankfully, just two miles down the road, we found a charming winery. Well, a formerly working winery,” explains Lisa. “We connected with the winemaker on-site, who gave us a tour and offered to help.” But then, as the Lynches said their goodbyes and started up the car, the winemaker noted in passing that the winery was for sale. “We looked at each other, parked the car and all got back out,” says Randy, still amazed at their luck to stumble on the picture-perfect vineyard and winery not far from their home. “I said right then to my family that we would own this one day. They all said back–in unison–‘I know,’
and my decision was made.” More than a decade later, their estate and nearby vineyard combined to make up Bennett Lane Winery, home to nearly 40 90-point wines that have been recognized by Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. In addition to award-winning wines, Bennett Lane also gained fame for its ability to buck the stereotype of who actually drinks wine in the United States. “It is a little-known fact, but wine is wildly popular on the racing circuit–yes, car racing,” says Randy. “In 2004, we became the first California winery sponsor in NASCAR. Our Bennett Lane team even won the NASCAR West Series Championship in 2007, along with an extremely dedicated fan base.” Lisa notes that the brand’s success on the race track even inspired their family to launch a new label to join their Bennett Lane varietal–Turn 4 Wines, available at Safeway stores across the Valley. “In racing, that fourth and final turn is the most exciting, heading to the green and checkered flags,” says Lisa. “However, our daughter Jade–who, with her fiancé, Chad Miller, markets the brand and will marry at our Napa home this fall–will tell you the four is because she was the fourth

born, and now it’s her turn.” Ingenuity and creativity didn’t stop at targeting race fans. The Lynches also set their sights on the sky, and in 2012 became the first winery in northern California to have its own branded hot air balloon. “We are also working on attaining our Napa Green certification,” says Lisa, whose team has instituted recycling and water re-use programs at the winery, among other sustainable initiatives. So, what could possibly be next for the wildly successful family? “Arizona,” says Randy. “We love everything about it here, even the heat.” The Lynches bought a home in the Valley a few years ago, at first more for relaxation and retreat, but now have their eyes set on bringing Napa Valley to Paradise Valley— and beyond. “With many wine club members already here, and some of Arizona’s top chefs blending Bennett Lane wines with their menus, we want our wines to find a home here just as we did,” says Lisa, noting that she and Randy recently hosted their first two Arizona wine club events at their Paradise Valley home, and both were wildly successful. On the restaurant side, while already available at El Chorro, Don & Charlie’s, The Mission and The House, the Lynches specifically note Zinc Bistro, Talavera, Binkley’s, Postino, Elements, Mastro’s Restaurants and The Henry as dream restaurants to carry their varietals. “As a family-owned winery, we want to partner with community-minded, good people here locally,” says Randy. “We want them to become a part of the family.” For more information, visit www.bennettlane.com.

How to handle fine hair -Ask the expert! Rodney Gentry, Full-service Designer and Hair Color Specialist, Sachi Studios
Q: We’ve focused on the problems and solutions of fine hair here, but are there also advantages to it? RG: Of course! Fine hair can look stunning, just like all other types of hair. Fine hair tends to be soft and silky. This makes it harder to style, but the flip side is that it can almost glow with a wonderful, natural shine. Those with curly fine hair will also find they spend much less time straightening it than their thicker-haired friends. Fine hair is also brilliant for the summer months, when it helps to keep the head cooler. Just like all other hair types, fine hair comes with plentiful advantages, as well as its own particular issues!
From static issues to limp, dull styles, fine hair can sometimes feel impossible to get right. Thankfully, expert color specialist Rodney Gentry, based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, is here to help! Q: First, why is it that some of us have finer hair than others? Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference. Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair. Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. There are also some great products on the market to help with fine hair. I’m loving the René Furterer Volumea range right now. The four products—shampoo, conditioner, conditioning spray and a volumizing foam—harness the power of natural ingredients like carob in order to create long-lasting volume that leaves the hair bouncy and lightweight. Products like these work wonders, and it is great to be able to introduce clients to them and know how much they will enjoy the effect that they have. Simple things like drying technique can also make a big difference. People with fine hair should lift the hair outward and upward as they dry if they want maximum volume. They should also avoid brushing it when wet, as fine hair can break very easily.
Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments. Q: Can you recommend any quick fixes for those with fine hair? RG: Well, a quick trip to Sachi Studios, for one! For those after a quick fix at home, I would recommend always having a deep conditioning masque on hand, ready to be used as a weekly treatment or whenever particularly luscious locks are required. On a daily basis, it really doesn’t get much better than the René Furterer Volumea line for those looking for added body.

LEONARDO LOO
Preserving the past, paving the way for the future BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
I
t is often said that one’s past does not determine one’s future. Leonardo Loo, however, takes great pride in honoring his past as he helps shape the future of Arizona. “I was born in Venezuela, and my family roots are in China and Mexico,” says Loo, today chair of Quarles & Brady’s Business Law Practice Group. “And my wife is African American, giving our children a more diverse background than either of us.” Eager to give back to diverse causes, Loo is chair of Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC), one of the largest Hispanic community development corporations in the United States that today provides assistance to disadvantaged individuals regardless of ethnic origin. He also serves on the boards of directors for the Arizona Asian American Bar Association, Black Chamber of Arizona, and Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, where he is also general counsel. Loo was recently honored with the Black Chamber Chairperson’s Award for his dedication to the organization, and named among the “Top Minority Leaders in Arizona.”
Etc.
Does having a diverse background help in your business? Yes! English is actually my third language—being able to communicate with our international clients, and having that cultural competency, helps them to know that they are in good hands. What is one major recent accomplishment of CPLC you can share? During our April gala, where we honored Congressman Ed Pastor, civil rights activist Dolores Huerta and music legend Chapito Chavarria, APS pledged $250,000 to provide scholarships to Latino students majoring in a STEM or public policy field in Arizona. What is the key to finding success in Arizona—no matter one’s ethnicity? Education and opportunity. As a community, we need to help as many Arizonans as possible—no matter their race or sex—to gain access to education, which then creates opportunities. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Q:
I hate the varicose and spider veins on my legs – they look so unflattering in shorts and swimsuits. How can I get rid of them?
A:
Try sclerotherapy! It’s low-cost, typically painless, highly effective, and scars or adverse effects are very rare. A small needle is used to inject the vein with a concentrated solution, collapsing it and turning it into scar tissue, which is reabsorbed by the body. (This can actually improve circulation, too!) For larger veins, we offer laser ablation – another minimally-invasive, relatively painless, inoffice procedure – which is often covered by insurance. We’d be happy to help make those embarrassing veins history – it’s time to show some leg! Have a question you’d like to ask? THE ACCIDENTAL CAREER Meet jewelry designer Gorjana Reidel
M
“I
BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
was born in Serbia, and lived there until I was 7,” explains Gorjana Reidel. “Back there, my grandmother made everything—our sweaters, our clothing… everything. She taught me how to make things. When I was 6, I was knitting clothes for my dolls. So, I always wanted to be creative.” Reidel had moved with her family to Scottsdale, where she grew up. She went to Chaparral High School, and later Arizona State University. She graduated with a marketing degree, but knew she didn’t want a typical 9 to 5 office job. So after college, she moved to Los Angeles, where a chance job led her to discover her love of the jewelry world. She trained with a jewelry designer, and soon launched her own company, Gorjana. “I love seeing [a piece] come to fruition, from idea to sketch to actually [being] able to put it on... that’s the best part,” she says. Today, her line includes items such as bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings and body jewelry (prices range from approximately $25-$120), and it is carried in all Nordstrom stores, more than 600 boutiques nationwide, on her website www.gorjana.com, and more.
Etc.
What is the one piece of jewelry you personally can’t live without? Earrings are definitely the one piece of jewelry I feel naked without. To me, earrings brighten up your face, and they always make me feel prettier. Right now, my favorites are the Ryder Ear climbers. Is there any celebrity you hope to one day see wearing your designs? Emma Stone! I just love her look and respect her work. When you’re not designing jewelry, we’d likely find you doing what? Spending quality time with my kids. Whether it’s at the beach or just watching a movie at home, it’s my grounding time. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

ROB DUBE Favors a modern retro fashion style
H
e works around stylish people and style all day as an administrative assistant at Scottsdale Quarter, so it is only fitting that Rob Dube is one stylish man about town, himself. “Modern retro, that’s definitely my work style. Patterned socks, skinny pants, skinny ties from Penguin or Burberry maybe—that is the look I go for most days,” says Dube. However, don’t look for Dube to give all his love to one specific brand or designer. “I like to shop around. I get stuff at a variety of places; I have clothes from everywhere,” he says. When taking a break from work and spending time with friends or enjoying a night out on the town, you’ll probably find Dube wearing a more relaxed style, such as a button-down shirt with a fun pattern and a nice pair of jeans. And, there is one thing you will certainly find him wearing: “I wear my Cole Haan shoes just about everywhere–they are my go-to staple,” he says. Another staple you’ll find in Dube’s closet? Multiple pairs of jeans. And just like the rest of his style, these are from multiple brands and designers, keeping things fresh and fun.

Is there anyone in Hollywood whose style you fashion yourself after? Brad Goreski, a celebrity stylist. Very fashionforward and fun! Where are some of your favorite places to go out and enjoy a night out on the town with friends and family? If I’m out at night, you’ll find me in Downtown Phoenix, but I’m definitely more of a brunch person. My favorite spots are Tanzy or True Food Kitchen! Where is your favorite place to shop at Scottsdale Quarter? Suitsupply! It’s like walking into the ultimate men’s dream closet.

he W Scottsdale Hotel is a glamorous, AAA Four Diamond hotel surrounded by the vibrant nightlife of Scottsdale. This lavish destination attracts fashionable locals and visitors alike. For Michele Rykalsky, W Scottsdale’s marketing and public relations manager, her style represents both her unique personality and the unique personality of the W’s brand. The media guru incorporates innovation into her fashion-forward work ensembles, as fashion is one of the W’s overall passion points as a brand. “I absolutely love street fashion and have found some very inspiring looks simply by walking down the street,” she says. “I also adore the boho chic trend–I love the light, airy fabrics, especially in the summer.” Whether she dons a designer dress at a fashion show or channels her edgier side at a music event for the hotel, Rykalsky always wears something that represents her true self. “I remember when I started at W Scottsdale, I was told ‘the W brand wants you to be you, so bring you every day to work,’” she says. Rykalsky certainty brings herself to work every day dressed head-to-toe in confidence. “To me, it is always important to wear something that makes you feel confident [because] confidence is the most fashionable thing anyone can wear,” she says. What is one staple item this confident, classy, and creative media fashionista cannot live without? A great pair of heels. “Heels can take any outfit from casual to dressy in seconds,” she says. Where is your favorite place to shop in the Valley? Crush Boutique. It offers some of my favorite labels, like Bec & Bridge, Lovers + Friends, MINKPINK, etc. What is one fashion/beauty secret you live by? Hourglass foundation. It’s absolutely amazing and makes your skin look flawless. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I’m a big animal lover and enjoy spending time with my rescue chihuahua, Lulu, as well as my friends and family. I love to travel, paint, read, try new restaurants, and have new experiences.

n the entertainment industry, performers who can sing, dance and act are known as triple threats. With an extra attribute to boot, namely wisdom beyond her 17 years, Sydney Scotia should be called a quadruple threat. Chat with her for just a few minutes and you’ll soon forget that you’re talking to someone who can’t even vote yet—it will be her combination of talent and smarts that takes her far. She’s also got another thing going for her: a memorable name. “Everyone always asks me about my name,” says Scotia. “My parents are from Sydney, Nova Scotia. They must have been a little homesick when they named me Sydney Scotia. Although, they don’t miss the 9-foot snow banks! In 1998, we moved to Scottsdale when I was 11-months-old.”

6/20/15 1:13 PM
“I WAS TOTALLY HOOKED BY THE ENTIRE CREATIVE PROCESS, AND I KNEW I WANTED TO DO THIS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.”
Growing up in Arizona, Scotia had a role model to look up to. “My brother, who is eight years older than me, was always a talented musician and writer,” she explains. “He did some community theater when I was very young, and I remember thinking, ‘I want to do that.’ He was actually nominated for an ariZoni Theatre Award. I found a different stage at the age of 7 when I focused on dance. I started late, so I had some catching up to do. I took lots of private lessons, as well as group classes in ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop and tap, so that I could join the company and compete.” And compete she did. What started out as something she simply enjoyed soon became the catalyst for a lifelong dream. “I loved dance and spent 20-30 hours per week training for competitions,” says Scotia. “I won scholarships, and some regional and national titles, but one of my best memories was training with Olympic gold medalist Olga Korbut and traveling with her to Hong Kong to dance and tumble in 11 of her appearances in 2008, just before the Beijing Olympics. I learned a lot about hard work from Olga. We were featured in over 30 newspapers in China and on several news channels. A mainland production company filmed a documentary while we were there, and I was hooked.” Instead of just focusing on dance though, Scotia broadened her entertainment arsenal with a new skill set. “I took acting classes in Scottsdale and Phoenix while continuing competitive dance, but in 2011 my mom asked me to choose between dance nationals or an acting camp in L.A.; I chose the acting camp,” she says. “My parents enrolled me in two camps that summer. The first one was a two-week sleepover camp at Occidental College. This was great training for the next camp, where I prepared and performed scenes for managers, agents and casting directors. I was totally hooked by the entire creative process, and I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.” When the studio director told Scotia’s mom that a move to Los Angeles would be required in order to seriously pursue a career in entertainment, they packed up the family car and headed west. Scotia’s father stayed behind in Scottsdale, and though it was hard to be separated, the family split their time between the two cities and took a chance on her burgeoning career. It soon paid off. “I remember my audition for [Canadian sitcom] Some Assembly Required,” says Scotia. “It was at Paramount Studios. I was thrilled to get a call back for a second audition in front of the producer, and then I waited. I was in downtown L.A. one day at noon filming a dance video when I got the call that I had to fly to Vancouver, Canada that very same evening. It was chaotic and exciting! Thankfully, the traffic cooperated as we dashed home and then to LAX. The next day in Vancouver, two actors for each

character in the script, who were chosen from nationwide searches in both Canada and the U.S., tested for producers and casting. Afterward, we all flew home and held our breath for a week, waiting to hear who got the part. I cried when I booked it.” The show, which will be released globally as a Netflix original on June 19, has proven to be Scotia’s breakout gig. “The creative producers of Some Assembly Required, Dan Signer and Howard Nemetz, are two of my favorite people,” says Scotia. “They gave me the opportunity to play Geneva as a series regular on the number one children’s show in Canada, a role that allowed me to win the Joey Award for Young Actress in a TV Series Comedy/ Action Leading Role. I love working for Howard and Dan, Thunderbird Films, and the cast and crew of Some Assembly Required—all incredible, talented and caring people. I can’t wait to return to Vancouver this summer to shoot season three.” In the meantime, Scotia is keeping herself busy. “During this hiatus I have been working toward finishing my senior year at Laurel Springs Academy,” she says. “It is very important to me to have a first-rate education so I can pursue a career on both sides of the camera. I am also writing a pilot, taking weekly lessons in scene study, singing, guitar, dance, improvisation, and swimming, in addition to making another fun music video. My biggest thrill was being hired for the Jamie Thompson film A Mermaid’s Tale, where I got to be the mermaid! I had to learn how to swim in an 8-pound rubber fish tail (created by the same man who made Daryl Hannah’s mermaid tail in Splash!) and dive into freezing, 50-degree harbor water in Oxnard, Cailf.—and I was never happier! I am still taking lessons from an Olympic swimmer who had me swimming like a mermaid in one week. A dive master was always present while I was in the water so I felt very safe, but to get even more comfortable in the water, my brother, Samson, and I took a dive certification course that included four 65-foot dives off the coast of Catalina Island.” Once she graduates, Scotia has her sights set on college, either in Los Angeles or abroad. She’d like to possibly add classical theater training to her repertoire, and says attending school is her immediate goal after she takes the SATs. From there, she has even bigger goals in mind. “In five years, I would like to have some strong film credits and be working as a regular on a major network series,” she says. “In 10 years, I would like to be producing my own series and films. I am currently writing a series that I am so
excited about, and hope to pitch in the fall.” Though Scotia certainly wants to build a career that is all her own, she has a list of entertainers who she looks up to, and movies that she loves to help guide the kind of legacy she’d like to create for herself. “I really admire Natalie Portman and I would like to follow her example,” says Scotia. “She is a talented actress who attended university, speaks several languages, produces, and just had her directorial debut in Cannes. I admire so many actors and actresses: Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, George Clooney, and so many more. Some of my favorite movies include The Breakfast Club, When Harry Met Sally, Pride and Prejudice, Good Will Hunting, Forrest Gump, Rain Man, The Hunger Games and Whiplash. My favorite TV shows are Friends, House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, The 100 and Supernatural. I think The Breakfast Club and Friends are my favorites for the same reasons. They both have strong character-driven scripts with flawed, compelling personalities in relatable situations.” Just as she looks up to those who’ve come before her, she also hopes to pass on what she’s learned to kids who want to follow in her footsteps. “I still have so far to go myself, but my best advice for anyone wanting to pursue a career in acting is to first study the basics at an acting school near you and pursue any opportunity to build your résumé,” she says. “Get audition experience and feedback at casting director workshops, and attend acting intensives and agent/manager showcases. Get an agent; surround yourself with good, caring people; and most importantly, love what you do and do what you love, and that will help you stay happy and optimistic when you face rejection and the constant ups and downs in this business. Also, it is very important to eat well and exercise every day. I keep busy and try to stay sharp and prepared so that when my next opportunity comes along, I’ll be ready.” Follow Scotia’s adventures on Twitter (@sydneyscotia), Instagram (sydneyscotia), Facebook and YouTube (Sydney Scotia). When she makes it big, you’ll be able to say you’ve been a fan since the beginning.
“IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME TO HAVE A FIRSTRATE EDUCATION SO I CAN PURSUE A CAREER ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CAMERA. I AM ALSO WRITING A PILOT, TAKING WEEKLY LESSONS IN SCENE STUDY, SINGING, GUITAR, DANCE, IMPROVISATION, AND SWIMMING, IN ADDITION TO MAKING ANOTHER FUN MUSIC VIDEO. JULY 2015 |

EXPERIENCE
COUNTS!
Looking great may be easier than you think. “I’d really love to do something to improve my face and figure, but I”m afraid of the pain, the post operative nausea and of course the cost. Isn’t there a way that I can enhance my appearance without all the hassles of a major production?” The answer is a resounding YES! Dr Andrew Wolin has found a great way to maximize the safety of facial, breast and body procedures while minimizing the pain and the cost. By utilizing an enhanced form of local anesthesia as well as sedation by specialists in ambulatory anesthesia, procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lifts, facelifts, rhinoplasties and liposuction can be done under a quick enhanced form of anesthesia and patients are be able to walk to their cars and go home after the procedure without nausea and pain. Part of the miraculous process is the use of a long acting local anesthetic at the conclusion of the procedure to give a 48 hour period of pain relief…no narcotic…no nausea. PRE OP

Patients have been raving about the experience and can’t believe they’ve ever had surgery any other way.
“Dr Wolin told me that I could undergo a breast augmentation in less than one hour without general anesthetic and then get off the operating room table and walk to my car. When it actually happened, I was amazed. What a great experience.” (verified testimonial)

His top-notch reputation as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and for cutting-edge procedures draws patients from near and far. THE ART OF CAMP
Pinspiration offers a unique summer option
P
inspiration’s camp recipe: “Take stories + art history lessons and combine with traditional crafts. Blend well. Expand to discover applications of traditional techniques in modern crafts.” “We really felt there was a need for this type of camp,” explains Brooke Roe, Pinspiration’s owner. “The parents wanted their kiddos to have an option that was indoors, and that was imaginative and creative.”

Pinspiration, located on High Street, is a DIY creative studio space inspired by Pinterest, where everyone from adults to children can embrace their creativity and create everything from paintings to jewelry to upcycled décor products, and more, without the hassle or mess. The camp, which is geared towards elementary-aged kids from K-6th grade, “is the only camp that really offers the DIY component. There’s an interest in making something by hand, to look at a more traditional piece and explore it in a more modern way,” Roe explains. There are three sessions in July—the weeks of July 6, 13 and 20—and each week offers a variety of themed classes. Some examples? · Swishes and Swirls: You’ll study Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Sunflowers paintings, and paint to music to discuss emotion and art. · Lumps and Bumps: Henry Moore was a 20th-century British artist who created huge sculptures from stone, bronze and types of plastic such as fiberglass. You’ll make your own abstract clay figures in this workshop. · Spirit Art: Kenojuak Ahevak is one of the best-known Canadian Inuit artists. Images from nature are important symbols in Inuit legend. You’ll use recycled materials to make your own Spirit Animals. · Jackson Pollack Splatter Painting: You’ll learn about Pollack’s technique and try your hand at it in Pinspiration’s very own splatter room! · Bubble Gum Wall: Pike Place Market, Seattle, WA: Get ready to talk about community art—and discuss all things bubble gum. You’ll make your own gum, make a gumball machine, and more! “The children have a lot of fun and they have an opportunity for some handson learning,” says Roe. “They get to explore some techniques they might not get into during abbreviated art classes at school.” Camp is $225/week and runs from 1-4 p.m. Located at 5410 E. High St., Ste. 105; 480.636.8010; www.pinspirationaz.com.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT PRESTON’S STEAKHOUSE? Honestly, I love the fact that I am able to work in a family-owned and -operated restaurant. Working with my mother, father and sister is deeply fulfilling for me. Plus, the fact that it’s truly an amazing steakhouse is a big plus. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE DISHES ON THE MENU THERE? The Tuscan Steak, Preston’s Salad, Preston’s Hamburger and Fries, Baked Sweet Potato, and the Classic Butter Cake. And I love the fact that we give this recipe out upon request. ONE TIP FOR COOKING THE PERFECT STEAK IS: Start with the highest quality steak you can find. Season it to your liking (we sell our steak seasoning to make it easy for you). The most important part of all is to have patience when cooking your perfect steak. You can’t rush perfection. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A CHEF? My inspirations came from my earliest childhood memories. My father and grandfather owned and operated two meat packing plants, one in Boise, Idaho, and one here in Phoenix. They were always making charcuterie and selling it in retail stores. Charcuterie is high-quality beef jerky, salami, hotdogs, pepperoni sticks, Polish sausage, steaks and such. To be able to walk into a convenience store and see the store selling the family’s products was very inspiring to me as a child. IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF, YOU’D PROBABLY BE… I probably would have followed my other grandfather, my Mom’s dad. He was a miner. He worked and lived in Globe. As a kid I would spend summers with him working his claims. I was hooked! So if it weren’t for my father and other grandfather, I would most likely be aimlessly roaming around the Superstition Mountains with a pickaxe, a gold pan, and that iconic gold miner’s donkey, searching for gold.

Liposuction

t is the procedure everyone is talking about. With unparalleled safety and minimal discomfort, Liposuction has quickly become the most popular cosmetic surgery in our modern era. With little to no downtime and much less bruising than in traditional methods, more and more individuals are opting to finally get rid of those love handles, saggy arms or extra chin they have tried desperately for years to trim off. Big changes in the methods of anesthesia and the instruments used in the procedure are all part of the positively remarkable change in Liposuction today. By injecting the fat cells with a local anesthesia to numb the treatment area, patients are fully alert during the

procedure and completely comfortable. A refined body image and path to a newer you are possible through body contouring with SmartLipo, Laser Lipo, and Vaser liposuction which are all forms of Tumescent Liposuction Body Contouring. William Hall, M.D. states "if a surgeon can truly deliver an improved figure, then just imagine the emotional enhancements that go along with it. How you feel about yourself when you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror can greatly affect your overall mood and all the interpersonal relationships with those around you." KEEP IT SHADY
Summer’s best fun-in-the-sun product finds BY LISA KASANICKY
Hear that? It’s the sound of diving board springs, the splash of a mighty cannonball, and the hum of a boat engine. Yes, summertime has officially sprung, and the lure of anything involving large bodies of water is at its peak—and so are the sun’s rays. Go ahead, dive in–but don’t go uncovered. Stay protected from head to toe and in the glow with these summertime must-haves.
Face Off If you prefer to go au naturel to avoid the thick, ghostly white cast of some facial sunblocks, you can stop that right now. Seriously. HydroPeptide Solar Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 30 fends off sun damage while self-adjusting to the color of your skin tone for natural, non-chalky coverage. A powerful punch of anti-aging ingredients like acai and green tea pair up with moisture-binding peptides to accelerate long-lasting hydration and clarity. $44 at www.hydropeptide.com.
Body Glove Even when you’re slathered in sunscreen, the sun can still sap your skin of nutrients and natural moisture. La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid for your body combats skin-sapping with its exclusive “Cell-OX Shield technology,” which combines UVA and UVB filters for broad spectrum protection with a powerful antioxidant complex to help protect skin from free radicals caused by UV rays. Ultra-light and fast-absorbing, the formula is safe for sensitive skin and water-resistant for up to 40 minutes. $36.99 at www.laroche-posay.us.
Lip-Lock Does your icy cold daiquiri taste a bit… off? It could be that lip balm you’re using. Coola Liplux SPF 30 keeps your pucker protected, minus that funky flavor of some lip protectants. The unscented lip balm contains a subtle blend of food-grade fruit butters to keep your lips hydrated while providing broad-spectrum sunscreen protection. Liplux is 70 percent certified organic, and is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Cannonball! $12 at www.coolasuncare.com.
Scalp Safe Avoid hat head while keeping your scalp protected with NIOS Shield Leave-in Conditioner SPF 15. The lightweight, spray-on conditioner protects the scalp from a sunburn, while nourishing hair with vitamins E and B5. The Moroccan argan oil tames frizz and gives a healthy, natural luster. $26 at www.niosshield.com.

My tatas are gorgeous thanks to Rachell! After that I totally trusted her to do my eyeliner, which I loved, so then I even did my Eyebrows and Lips! —Ellen Elson Realtor/Luxury Private Listings
I was most impressed with Rachell’s conservative approach to permanent makeup, she really stresses you can always add more and that made me comfortable. She is such a color genius and so experienced. alk about becoming one with nature… this home, dubbed the “Boulder House,” takes that literally. Located in North Scottsdale near the Boulders Resort & Spa, this historic home (called “The Most Original Home in America” by Stanley Marcus in his book Quest For The Best) was designed in the early 1980s by architect Charles Foreman Johnson and built into 1.6 billion-year-old granite boulders. The boulders, which make up more than 60 percent of the structure, were once used as an ancient encampment for Native American tribes.

“THE MOST ORIGINAL HOME IN AMERICA” BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
Set on nine acres of undisturbed high Sonoran desert, the granite boulders on the site, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, also feature Native American petroglyphs and unique rock art. The house itself features three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms, and does offer all modern amenities, including double Dacor built-in ovens and stainless steel appliances—making it a perfect balance of the modern and the ancient. FREDERICKSBURG A luxury escape in the Texas Hill Country BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM
F
redericksburg, founded by German immigrants in the 1840s, is about an hour north of San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country. The town is now filled with historic limestone buildings, some of the sweetest peaches in the world, luxurious B&Bs, world-class shopping, art galleries, restaurants, wineries, museums, and plenty of outdoor fun.
Get Outdoors The Texas Hill Country is renowned for the wildflowers that blanket the area from spring through fall. One of the best places to check out the wildflowers—and even pick up seeds to plant at your own home—is at Wildseed Farms (www.wildseedfarms.com). This family-owned business is the country’s largest producer of wildseed, and the fields of flowers that stretch across more than 200 acres, along with the associated birds and butterflies, are breathtaking. About 18 miles north of town is Enchanted Rock, the country’s second largest granite dome, which reaches 500 feet high. The Summit Trail to the top is fairly strenuous, but an easier four-mile Loop Trail is popular with hikers and bikers. Rock climbers prefer the park’s many climbs, including the 1,000-foot-long Enchanted Rock Fissure.
A Touch of History Fredericksburg is home to several museums, including the Pioneer Museum, which details the town’s history. The National Museum of the Pacific War (www.pacificwarmuseum.org), which also includes the Admiral Nimitz Museum, George H.W. Bush Gallery and Japanese Garden of Peace, is a spectacular interactive experience that chronicles U.S. life during the Pacific War years, and is ideal for visitors of all ages. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Fredericksburg Herb Farm (www.fredericksburgherbfarm.com) is a fantasy garden filled with walking paths, as well as luxurious Sunday Haus Cottages, the indulgent Nature’s Spa, farm-fresh dishes at The Farm Haus Bistro, and a selection of homemade soaps and lotions in the gift shop. EMBRACE THE HEAT
Fight fire with the fire of these 5 fiery feasts BY TARYN JEFFRIES
W
hile we may have had an easy breezy spring, our summer has definitely arrived–and we are going to be paying for those 70- and 80-degree days in the form of high-100s for a good long time. Your first response might be to head to the pool or to your local froyo spot, and no one would blame you. But why not switch things up a bit and fight fire with fire? Embrace the heat of the day by pairing the temperature of your dinner with that of the thermometer outside. Be sure to have a chilled drink at the ready to pair with this selection of the Valley’s hottest dishes. A heads-up though... most of these dishes come with warnings, which means you order it, it’s yours. No refunds or exchanges, so make sure you can handle the heat!

food files WHAT: Habanero Cheeseburger WHERE: Carlsbad Tavern, 3313 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; 480.970.8164; www. carlsbadtavern.com For 20 years, Carlsbad Tavern has been treating Scottsdale diners to the unique flavors of New Mexican cuisine in an eclectic and cave-like space. The majority of the menu items here have a spicy kick, but none more than the Habanero Cheeseburger. As the menu description warns, “This burger may cause temporary blindness or loss of hearing.” With a warning like that, you would expect some serious kick, and you will definitely not be disappointed. They use freshly ground habanero chile mixed in with lean ground beef. This process allows the heat to really permeate the burger, and in doing so, there’s no place to hide from the intense flavors. On top of the combustible flavors of the burger (as if that wasn’t enough!) they top it with melted jalapeño jack cheese. This addition adds to the level of flavors, as well as the levels of heat. The burger is a house specialty, but be forewarned, as the menu touts, “You order it, you own it.” WHAT: El Diablo WHERE: Hopdoddy Burger Bar, 11055 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.348.2337; www.hopdoddy.com Hopdoddy is becoming synonymous with high-end creative gourmet burgers, pairing unexpected ingredients into perfectly palatable patties. While it offers up a Burger of the Month that celebrates the season or specific events or holidays, the permanent menu is full of a variety of unique (and some expected) burger creations sure to please any taste. For the heat-seekers there is one gloriously fiery burger: the El Diablo. This burger pairs Angus beef with pepper jack cheese, caramelized onions, habanero and serrano chiles, salsa roja, and chipotle mayo. With so many flavors combined you might think that they would compete with each other, but they manifest as distinctive peppery levels of heat and flavor. The sliced peppers ensure a fiery kick in every bite, and the slight sweetness of the onions helps to cut that heat–but only a little. This burger is devilishly hot. For an extra dose of wicked, pair your burger with the Green Chili Queso Fries, and cool yourself down with a Caramel & Sea Salt Milkshake. WHAT: Courtney’s Favorite Burrito WHERE: Jalapeño Inferno, 23587 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, and 20825 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale; 480.585.6442 or 480.513.8332; www.jalapenoinferno.com With a name like Jalapeño Inferno, one would have certain expectations about the level of heat in the dishes. While this spot has several Americanized dishes, there is a whole section on the menu devoted to those who like it hot. Really hot. A seriously spicy option is Courtney’s Favorite Burrito, a distinctive and massive

burrito that is soon to become your favorite, as well. The 10-inch beast is loaded with grilled chicken or steak, black beans, onions and cilantro, along with red enchilada sauce and their Inferno sauce. Once the ingredients are all stuffed into the jumbo flour tortilla, they top it, enchilada-style, with chile rajas sauce, with rice and beans on the side. In addition to the perfectly seasoned meat, you’ve got the serious heat of the Inferno sauce, which is a secret blend of chili and spices. All of the flavors meld together and provide a really nice flavor to heat ratio. The sweat on your brow may not be tempered easily, but a sweet and salty margarita might help… a little. WHAT: Temple of Fire WHERE: Suh Noi—The Little Thaiger, 7150 E. Thomas Road, Scottsdale; 480.941.7210; www.littlethaiger.com More often than not, the first thing you think of in association with Thai food is heat. If that’s the case, you’re not necessarily wrong. Thai food features a variety of spices, curries and chilis, but the biggest components in dishes are balance, detail and variety. This is why you will find that you are presented with so many different types of sauces when you begin your meal. Suh Noi offers a tried and true menu, and if you are on the hunt for some serious flavor and spice, treat yourself to the Temple of Fire—a rice bowl with intense flavors. This spicy chili fried rice bowl can be made with your choice of protein (chicken, beef or tofu) and topped with a star (fried) egg. While this dish is almost combustible, you’ll still be able to spot and enjoy the perfect balance of flavors, from spicy to salty then back to spicy, with a little bit of sweet. Need a quick heat fix? They even sport a drive-thru. WHAT: Naan paired with the yellow or red chilli chutney WHERE: Tandoori Times, 8140 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; 480.794.1404; www.tandooritimes.com Tandoori Times offers an extensive menu that includes dishes for any taste and diet, with a focus on healthy eating. They offer seven different kinds of naan, a unique bread that is hand-shaped and cooked in a clay oven, served with an equally varied selection of chutneys for dipping. Naan can be considered a type of appetizer, or an accoutrement to your entrée selection. Naan paired with the yellow or red chilli chutney will create a steamy start to your dinner. The yellow chutney offers a complex flavor with the combination of lemon rind, vinegar and jalapeños, and has a nice balance of heat and tartness. If the yellow chutney isn’t hot enough for you, step up to the red chilli chutney, a combination of dry red chillies, spices and garlic melded into a paste and then combined and sautéed in oil to give it an aromatic and tempting texture that might be deceiving at first glance. Your first taste will awaken taste buds you didn’t know you had—and straighten up your posture. If things get a little too hot, a sweet velvety Mango Lassi might help.

GALLERY ART
is for you. If you are more into creating clothing, then you can learn the basics of Nuno Felting by “using soap and water to blend natural wool fibers into beautiful silk pieces” and where the “end result is a beautiful scarf.” That class is on Wednesday afternoons. The studio appeals to “people looking for something new and different, but fun and easy,” Senkfor says. “We are not a school, but a working studio/ gallery where the main focus is fun, easy but unique workshops.” The Creating Spot, located near Cowboy Ciao at 7127 E. 6th Ave., Scottsdale (480.272.6004), also sells original works. Senkfor and Harr are familiar with that corner of Old Town, as they both sold their wares at ArtBridge Thursdays, an artisan market on the Scottsdale Waterfront off Stetson Drive. Passion for art and creativity has been a mainstay in Senkfor’s life, especially after experiencing a life-threatening illness when she lived in Cleveland in 2003. “I soon realized that one of my missions in life was to design beautiful and imaginative pieces of jewelry,” Senkfor shares in her profile on The Creating Spot (www.thecreatingspot.com) website. “As I regained my health I was motivated and inspired to design and produce amazing pieces of jewelry. I shared these items with friends and family, who were impressed with my self-taught talents.” Her mission now is to touch “as many people as possible through creativity,” she says. So far the response has been “excellent and workshops are filling up,” Senkfor says. “We have already had a number of five-star ratings and customers are signing up for more workshops, all in just a few short weeks.”
A new studio/gallery offers fun classes BY MIKE SAUCIER
A
rt as therapy, art as an escape, art as a distraction and a way of melting the hours away—these are some of the wellknown and well-worn things people say about the process of creating art. All those things are true, and a new contemporary studio/gallery in Old Town is adding another use of art to that list: the fact that it’s fun. Artists Cheryl Senkfor and her business partner Bobby Harr recently opened The Creating Spot with the mindset that people of all ages will come to their studio to escape (both the pressures of life and the heat!), to spend an hour or more completely engaged in the creation of an original piece of jewelry or a work made from fused glass or from fibers. “When you are in that ‘creative zone’ there is no other ‘high’ that equals it, plus it has only good side effects: Better health, more happiness, and it opens up your choices in life,” Senkfor says. You don’t have to possess any creative or art skills whatsoever to fashion a piece of work. Senkfor, Harr and other artists are there to show customers the ropes. They are putting their collective years of creating pieces into showing others how it’s done, whether it be during a class or for an event such as a birthday, a bachelorette party stop, a book club gathering, or a team-building exercise. There are plenty of creative class options for those willing to try something new. For example, if you want to try your hand at creating a small, multicolored fused glass vase or dish to use for candles, candies or plants, then the Glass Dish class on Saturday afternoon SO SCOTTSDALE! |

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
