ed note

I

’ll never forget the way I spent my Fourth of July just five years ago, toasting good friends in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge as fireworks burst over the San Francisco Bay. But, here’s the kicker – I was wrapped in a scarf and zipped up in a fleece jacket! In fact, I was bundled up for most of my two summers in SF. You know Mark Twain’s saying, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco?” Well, it’s very true. Being a Texas girl, I was used to a hot (and humid) summer, usually spent on a lake and definitely not wearing winter gear. For you desert dwellers, perhaps a chilly Fourth, and summer season, seems idyllic right about now. Though, no matter where you find yourself this month, I encourage you to embrace it. If you’re in town, we’ve uncovered many ways in which to do so: theater-hop at Scottsdale’s upscale dine-in options (page 60); wine and dine on a dime (or, at least for a steal, page 62); and empower yourself at IGNITE, Bizzie Gold’s transformative weekend at the Sanctuary (page 58). If summertime equals boat time in your book, set sail aboard a luxury dinner cruise on Lake Pleasant (page 78) – just know I may be joining you! And, if you choose to escape to the cooler high desert in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I may also see you there. My parents own Doodlet’s, one of the shops travel writer Susan Lanier-Graham encourages you to explore in her article on page 79. At the heart of it all – the fun, our day-to-day goings-on, our society and the community – is the law. And that’s something our cover story delves into with attorney Monica Lindstrom, who is also a local radio and TV personality with appearances on national networks too. Read about what kind of legal input she provides and why she’s so passionate about it on page 42. However you choose to spend this next month, make it a memorable one. I hope we help you along the way. Happy July! Chelsea Young Editor-in-Chief chelsea@richmanmediagroup.com

up close Her resume already reads like that of an industry veteran. As a military child who spent time in England and Japan before settling in Scottsdale at age 10, she started her own wardrobe style company, Love Jenesis Styles, at only 17. She has worked behind the scenes from New York to LA Fashion Week as a stylist and has been involved in production as well as executing photo and video shoots. She was named Phoenix Fashion Week’s top wardrobe stylist two years in a row, and is currently the buyer for four local fashion boutiques. On top of it all, Laforcarde is the founder and designer of her own fashion line, Woman’s Touch Apparel. With total creative control, she produces tangible items that exemplify her modus operandi: female empowerment. “Fashion is my first love, and what better way to express my creativity as well as my personal belief on the empowerment of women?” Laforcarde says. Woman’s Touch Apparel boasts bold designs and eyecatching (and sometimes cheeky) slogans designed to make those around the wearer think. The vintage-inspired, festival-ready and feminine-forward collections promote body positivity, selfexpression and, of course, girl power. “I wanted to make a difference in how the world viewed women while combining fashion and women empowerment together,” Laforcarde explains. “A line that would also speak for women with no voice. Fashion speaks without saying a word.” This is especially true when the clothing speaks for you. The line’s popular bold statement T-shirts have phrases such as: “I Vote for Women,” “CEO” and “Thou Shalt Get Her Own Money.” Even the sizing is redefining how women approach fashion, with a system where small, medium and large labels don’t exist. Instead, sizes have fun,

feminine names like sensual, mesmerizing, luscious and extravagant. “Women shouldn’t fit into the same categories as the size drink you order at the movies,” Laforcarde says. “I want women to celebrate their sizes. You are not large – you are luscious!” Not only do her clothing designs

speak loudly of her passion for female empowerment, her entrepreneurial spirit thrives on supporting other strong women. From the seamstresses to screen printers, Woman’s Touch Apparel is entirely produced by women. “The majority of women clothing brands are designed by men. Where do we fit in? I plan to step into that space.”

Paying It Forward Laforcarde’s desire to advocate for women in the workplace extends beyond that of

She also encourages everyone to seek out and support local, women-run businesses in Scottsdale. “There are several small businesses located in Scottsdale, the majority being woman-owned. We need more female CEOs in this world, and it is always inspiring to see other women taking larger risks. Now we just need more women helping women!” But Laforcarde also recognizes that not all women have the resources available to reach their full potential, and some need a helping hand before they can help themselves – whether they are a victim of circumstance or culturally suppressed. Woman’s Touch Apparel is dedicated to helping those in need by participating in local and national events that support nonprofit organizations focused on helping women. Such events include this past May’s 100 Women Event in Phoenix, in which women who have met unfortunate circumstances are given a day of glam by local stylists, as well as one-on-one time with financial advisors, potential employers and health care professionals. On July 16, Laforcarde will co-produce the Brave Wings Fashion Show, which will benefit the Arizona Burn Foundation. And thanks to her dedication, compassion and keen designer eye, Laforcarde is well on her way to promoting a more positive perspective of strong women in society. “I really just want my brand to make a difference in the lives of others. I hope for Woman’s Touch Apparel to be more than a clothing line. I want it to be a movement. A movement of women standing together, speaking up for one another, and supporting women who are killing it!” Woman’s Touch Apparel is available at Custom Kreations Boutique located in Laveen, Downtown Phoenix and Mesa, or online at www.womanstouchapparel.com.

A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, stylist and color expert at Sachi Studios

Rodney Gentry is one of those people whose Midwestern charm and enthusiasm can’t help but rub off on you. And in his line of work, that’s certainly a plus. Gentry is possibly the Valley’s most adored hair stylist. His clients (some of them might better be described as fans) will happily travel across state lines in order to have him handle their tresses. Many of them simply trust nobody else with their hair. Having operated his own salon in Chicago before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry brings big city expertise to the Valley, which he combines with his own unique passion for styling and coloring at Sachi Studios. Each client enjoys a truly personalized service. Gentry considers the condition and history of the hair before recommending a treatment program, style and (if desired) color. His focus is on nurturing hair back to full health at the same time as providing stunning styles and fabulous colors. “It’s my goal to make each client feel truly beautiful – and to leave them with a style that they can easily recreate themselves every day,” he says. Part of this comes down to the right products. Gentry only uses the very

best brands available, not skimping when it comes to choosing those products that will bring about dramatic improvements in the hair’s condition. This applies to everything, from daily shampoos to the color treatments that he uses, which are enzyme-based rather than peroxide-based. This means they enhance the condition of the hair as well as give it a wonderfully vibrant color. Color is Gentry’s true passion. From full hair makeovers to the subtlest of highlights or lowlights, he works with his clients to select the colors that are right for their skin tone, the shape of their face and even their preferred color of clothing. “Every single person is unique in their coloring, which is why personalized consultation is so important,” he explains. “You really have to care about each and every client in order to bring out the best in their hair. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to beautiful hair!” Gentry also believes that it is important to stay abreast of trends. From the Oscars to the latest catwalk shows, he’s up to speed with seasonal styles and colors in order to enable each of his clients to achieve a touch of Hollywood

glamour. From super straight blonde locks to superbly highlighted plaits with the tiniest of accessories woven in, Gentry is available to provide advice and guidance on how those in the Valley can look their very best this summer, both color-wise and style-wise. If you haven’t yet checked out Sachi Studios then you’re not giving your hair the love it deserves!

Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, AZ. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for further information.

TRAVELIN’ MAN

Drew Goldberg gains followers and perspective as he explores the world BY STEPHANIE LOUGH

D

rew Goldberg first caught the travel bug during a study abroad trip in 2012. Even then, he knew he wanted to turn traveling the world into a career. His blog, The Hungry Partier, started as a travel journal to share with friends and family, but he soon found his niche by utilizing social media in ways other travel bloggers had yet to conquer. Today, his blog is considered one of the top travel websites with recognition from The Huffington Post and U.S. News & Travel. With a target audience of millennials under 25, Goldberg carved out his place in the crowd of travel bloggers by capitalizing on the activities they love most. “My niche is nightlife, and I focus on writing descriptive nightlife and festival guides around the world,” Goldberg says. Goldberg credits Snapchat as the tool that set him apart. After two years of growing his viewership, his Snapchat (@drewbinsky) exploded in 2015. Today, he receives about 20,000 views per snap. “It’s almost like I’m hosting my own travel show, and people tune in on their phones. My goal is to provide a realistic perspective on life as a full-time traveler.” Even though the world is now his lucrative playground, Goldberg could not be more appreciative of Scottsdale, his home base for about a quarter of the year.

Etc.

What do you love about Scottsdale? I can say with complete confidence that Scottsdale is one of the best places to grow up and live in the entire world. The desert and mountains are things that we take for granted; most of the world has never even seen a cactus before. Where is your favorite place to travel? I’m pretty hooked on Asia after spending the majority of the last three years there. My favorite countries to visit are Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar, Korea and Japan. These countries – along with most countries in Asia – are extremely safe, cheap, and they all have the friendliest people. What advice do you have for people looking to travel more? The most common question I get from people is, “I want to travel, but I have no idea where to start.” Fear is the No. 1 thing that holds people back. I always tell people to look for jobs abroad. There are so many opportunities to work and live abroad – you just have to find them. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

THE PINNACLE IN PLANES Orin Anderson helps people travel in style BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

hen you work for Arizona’s largest and most prestigious private aviation company, a sense of sophistication and attention to detail are must-haves. Orin Anderson, the director of business development for Pinnacle Aviation, executes these qualities with ease. Pinnacle Aviation provides premier aircraft solutions with an array of aircraft services spanning sales, acquisitions, management, charters and maintenance. Anderson’s role within the aviation industry proves to have many dynamic and complex components when working with such highend individuals and corporations. “I use a variety of communication strategies to highlight the appropriate jet solutions for each client or prospect,” Anderson says. “It is inspiring to meet with very successful and influential people to talk topics they are excited and passionate about.” While his passion for aviation runs deep, Anderson’s ability to understand the various needs of individuals is innate. “My passion comes from a genuine curiosity about people and the details that make each person’s life experience unique,” he says. “The highly successful individuals with the good fortunate to use private aviation very often have exceptionally interesting experiences and perspectives about life.”

Etc.

What do you love most about your job? Working closely with a full range of private jets is very cool, but it is earning the confidence of the extraordinarily successful individuals who use private jets that is the most rewarding to me. What are some of the most interesting requests you’ve had for a flight? One client flew several of his employees to an all-day meeting in Kansas City and requested his favorite Z-Man brisket sandwiches from Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que for the ride home. With proactive planning, the pilots were able to get across town, pick up the food order, and get back to the jet for an on-time departure back to Scottsdale. The client was surprised and thrilled to share his favorite Kansas City barbecue with his team. What are some of your hobbies? I’ve had a blast coaching my twin boys in basketball and flag football. I also love playing golf when time permits. JULY 2016 |

hen he isn’t in the operating room or making rounds in his scrubs, Dr. Mitchell Kaye can be seen in a mix of ensembles. When it’s family time, you’re likely to find him sporting laid-back gear of the T-shirt and shorts variety. However, when it comes to a big meeting or charity event, Dr. Kaye easily transitions to a suit and tie. “I certainly like to push the envelope with patterns. I like a variety with patterns, but when it comes to colors I do tend to keep it simple with blues, grays and blacks,” he says of his suit selections. The urological surgeon and president of the Natural Restoration Centers of America says, “While I will shop at stores like Nordstrom and Ted Baker, I also like to have custom suits for important meetings. I have used the same tailor overseas for nearly 20 years.” The father of three girls also enjoys special accessories, yoga beads or stones that he has bought during his travels. Dr. Kaye notes that the accessories allow him to showcase his uniqueness. “I am able to change these pieces based on where I am going and what I am doing. They all have a special meaning, and I enjoy showing them off.” What do you love about your job? I get the most enjoyment from the positive impact I have, and can have, on my patients’ lives. As president of Natural Restoration Centers of America, it has been invigorating for me to see what our state-of-the-art, natural, nonsurgical therapies have done to help people. What do you love about fashion? I like that you can approach each day with a personal style, flair, attitude or scent that is selfexpressive, be an individual and still fit in. What do you like to do with your family? The reality is that most of our time is centered around school and activities such as sports and music lessons. It has been important for me to expose the children to a wide range of the Valley’s cultural offerings, such as the theater and concerts. We love the many lessons that come along with travel as well.

A FIGHTER WITH FLAIR Sally Cashman emanates timeless beauty BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES PROVIDED BY DIVA DIVINE

P

rofessionally, Sally Cashman is a real estate agent with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty. She’s also a breast cancer survivor, a wife and a mother who exudes perseverance and sophistication – and she loves helping people’s real estate dreams become a reality. “My passion for real estate comes from my love for Arizona and the amazing properties I am privileged to see every day,” she says. Cashman thrives on helping people through major life transitions no matter what they may be. She can personally attest to this as a survivor of breast cancer. “With the incredible support from my family and friends I took on a new career in real estate in 2009 and founded Bad Girls Do Good Things, which has grown to become a small but thriving nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for cancer.” As a businesswoman with a fighting spirit, Cashman reflects her poise and confidence through her clothing, which certainly speaks volumes of her fight and flair. “I like to feel pretty but not frilly, professional but not stuffy, colorful but not garish, on-trend yet classic,” she says. “My style depends on what my day holds, whether it be personal or professional.” Depending on the time of year, Cashman will don the likes of a cool maxi dress with wedges or capri-length leggings, a long tunic and statement jewelry. Much like her ability to help residents find their dream home, Cashman’s style comes to her just as effortlessly. Give us a fashion secret of yours. A genuine, confident and positive attitude. Never fully dressed without a smile! What do you enjoy most about your job? I love the creative process and valuable relationships that come from what I do, the long-term relationships with my clients and, of course, my friends in the business. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? We are empty nesters … I love spending time with my husband, Andy, and our two Australian Shepherds (they love to swim), working on our home remodel, cooking, and I’m devoting more time to personal improvement and fitness.

Radio and TV personality Monica Lindstrom makes her case on legal news

A

successful attorney by trade, Monica Lindstrom never fancied herself a broadcast journalist when the chance came knocking in 2007. “The opportunity fell into my lap, says Lindstrom, explaining it was actually her husband looking for media exposure to promote his own executive coaching gig when he connected with local news outlet KTAR (92.3 FM). The radio station was in need of a female attorney to talk about a big legal story at the time, an offer she was skeptical of at first.

“I thought he was crazy. After all, I was a lawyer, not a TV person! Well, he convinced me to give it a try. It was a great decision.” Within just four days of working with KTAR, Lindstrom was booked for national spots on Fox and Friends and The O’Reilly Factor. She followed with appearances on HLN, Good Morning America, CNN’s Headline News and more, and soon became a fixture of media’s legal news coverage. Today, Lindstrom co-hosts The Agenda on KTAR, serves as the station’s news and Arizona sports legal expert, and writes for KTAR’s #LegallySpeaking blog. Locally, she contributes on Fox 10, NBC 12 News and AZTV Morning Scramble, in addition to being a go-to commentator for network and national outlets. “My favorite thing about being in the media is the challenge of it,” Lindstrom says. “Nothing in media moves slow; it is always fast-paced and can change at the drop of a dime. It keeps me thinking and on my toes. It intrigues me.” As the owner of her law practice and licensed to practice in both Arizona and California, Lindstrom’s diverse legal background and experience as a former criminal prosecutor for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office provides her with the ability to cover the broad range of legal topics that make up the headlines. She is as dedicated and committed to the facts and details of her stories as she is with her own clients. “With every segment I do my due diligence and research,” she says. “Armed with the information, I try to explain the issues by using a common sense approach so that everyone can understand what is really going on.” Delivering unbiased news is a responsibility Lindstrom takes very seriously, one that can be especially delicate when reporting on legal matters that are more controversial and emotional. Her unique position covering stories that continue to develop and change – with facts that are not always as cut-and-dry – requires her to analyze, speculate and, at times, play the devil’s advocate. “When I have my legal expert hat on, I try to remain neutral and explain the law so others can draw their own

conclusions,” she says. “I want listeners to know they can trust that I will shoot them straight. “I am authentic and sincere. However, when asked for my opinion I often will not hesitate. That makes good TV and radio!” And legal stories also make good TV. In a culture obsessed with sensationalizing legal issues and case coverage, her busiest times include some of the most controversial and dramatic cases of recent years, such as the trials of George Zimmerman, Casey Anthony and Dr. Conrad Murray (doctor of the late Michael Jackson).

SO SCOTTSDALE! |

SS_42_45CoverMonica_Jul16.indd 44

44

She admits part of her success is due to the media circus surrounding the Jodi Arias trial that happened in her own backyard, gaining her more national exposure. But not all of her biggest stories are centered around the tragic and shocking. Having carved out a niche in sports legal commentary, Lindstrom spent countless (and admittedly, enjoyable) hours going over every intricate detail of the infamous Deflategate case. She tackles sports law with the enthusiasm of the most passionate fans. “I dig into the legal sports stories with a passion and a purpose – to learn everything about it that I can and then

| JULY 2016

6/22/16 2:14 PM

reiterate it to the audience,” Lindstrom says. “The sports world is dynamic, intriguing, exciting, frustrating and exhilarating, and then when you throw law on top, for me, it takes it to another level.”

For the Greater Good While Lindstrom thrives off the excitement and media frenzy surrounding the hot-button legal stories, she knows there is a greater good that comes from bringing these issues to the forefront. Paying

attention to legal matters is important for society and individuals, and news coverage helps promote dialogues to encourage social change, or give someone insight into their own rights and community needs. “Everyone is impacted by the law in one way or another. It is important for people to be aware of the current legal stories because it could affect them personally,” she says. “You cannot protect and take care of yourself and your family

JULY 2016 |

SS_42_45CoverMonica_Jul16.indd 45

45

unless you have a basic understanding of what is going on in your community and nation legally.” With this mindset, Lindstrom sees her platform as a way to fulfill her desire to teach and educate others. “I love teaching, and being in the media is one way I can share my legal knowledge, my life experiences and my thoughts with others. One of the greatest things you can do is empower those who want to learn and succeed.” Off the air, Lindstrom educates others in the more literal sense as an adjunct professor at Arizona Summit Law School, teaching a class on mediation and interviewing as well as counseling. And while she hopes her reporting helps educate people of their legal rights, she notes that “nothing can really take the place of getting sound advice from a living, breathing attorney.” Lindstrom embodies this sentiment through her involvement with the Paiute Neighborhood Center Legal Clinic, where she organizes legal assistance to those in Scottsdale who cannot otherwise afford help, and by being part of a Judge Pro Tempore, a group that volunteers time mediating cases for the courts of Maricopa County. She also sits on the board of Ambassadors of Compassion, a nonprofit that teaches leadership, character, responsibility and accountability to high school students and equips them to succeed as they take responsibility for their own lives. “Giving back to the community is important for everyone,” Lindstrom says. “None of us live in this world alone. We all need each other in some capacity, and everyone plays a role.” While her resume as a legal commentator, adjunct professor and practicing attorney continues to grow, the role that is most important to Lindstrom is being mother to her two young sons, a wife and a dedicated family member. “Although I am a lawyer by education and trade, that is only part of me. Family is a big help. My husband, my mom, my brother and my father are always there for me so I am so very lucky.” Lindstrom lives and practices law in Scottsdale. Learn more about her at www.monicalindstrom.com, and read her blog at www.ktar.com/monica-lindstrom.

A PICTURE IS WORTH A 1000 WORDS For plastic surgeons to turn back the hands of time and create a more youthful sensual face, they must meld soft curves within a 3 dimensional tapestry of highlight and shadow. Dr. Wolin is a double board certified plastic surgeon and expert in fat transfer. He uses his patient's own fat as a permanent volumizing and sculpting tool and often combines fat transfer with other leading edge facial rejuvenation procedures to achieve an outcome in which the whole is truly greater than the sum of all the parts.

s one of the world’s leading personal development and wellness experts – and dubbed “the millennial voice of personal development” – Bizzie Gold is bringing her groundbreaking IGNITE program to Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa July 17-20. Gold has appeared on The Dr. Oz Show, TODAY and ABC News, among others, and her past clients include Julia Roberts, Pink and Jennifer Love Hewitt. With the resort’s spectacular mountain views as an inspirational backdrop, the three-day IGNITE retreat focuses on facilitating sustainable transformation in three primary areas – movement, nutrition and personal development – and is designed to help participants achieve immediate breakthroughs. Participants will learn how to apply “spiritual intelligence” to their practices in each area and will leave the retreat with new ways to ignite passion, refuel their internal physiology and approach goals without the baggage of emotional addiction. Gold’s socially innovative and collaborative approach fosters bonding between participants, and the friendships that emerge from the retreat help support the sustainability of the transformational work. Each morning begins with movement to awaken the body, balance the chakra system and fire up students’ passion for transformation. Four personal development sessions throughout the weekend help participants peel away layers of emotional patterning and destructive behavior. Nutrition is covered in three segments, including an evaluation of students’ current nutritional beliefs, simple nutritional solutions based on a healthy Paleo diet to rid the body of chronic symptoms, and a personalized nutrition program to continue the transformation beyond the retreat. In addition to these sessions, the IGNITE package includes: three nights’ luxury accommodations, two 60-minute spa treatments, retreat materials, a welcome gift, Paleo meals (dinner July 17; breakfast, lunch and dinner July 18 and 19; breakfast July 20), and access to the spa lounges, fitness center, Arizona’s largest infinity pool, and a 25-yard lap pool.

THE ART OF BREWING

Real, Wild & Woody Beer Festival showcases the best suds in the state BY CHELSEA YOUNG

I

f you’re into craft beer, make your way to downtown Phoenix for the Real, Wild & Woody Beer Festival that’s hosted by the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, which seeks to promote the state’s craft brewing industry with educational opportunities for brewers, distributors and consumers. In fact, the guild represents more than 75 breweries, craft beer bars, breweries in the planning stages, partners and distributors across Arizona. And you’ll get a chance to interact with and sample

many of them at this festival celebrating the art of craft brewing. This year’s toast to the state’s rare, unique and unconventional brews and brewing processes will take place at the Phoenix Convention Center, with fresh flavors and seasonal specialties poured by more than 50 of the Southwest’s best craft brewers. Festival-goers can sample specialty casks, rich and unique flavor combinations and other never-before-sipped brews. Plus, the festival has partnered with some of the region’s top restaurants to provide bites to complement all those brews. General admission tickets include 20 beer tasting tickets as well as food pairings and a commemorative glass. While designated driver tickets mean no drinking, of course, they do include select food samples. So, it seems the only question left is: What’s with the festival name? “Real, wild and woody” each connote different beer terminology. Get yourself ahead of the pack with this know-how: “Real” ale means the beer is served straight from the cask (so it’s not processed), “wild” beer has a certain yeast strain that gives it an earthy taste, and finally, “woody” beer refers to a wood- or barrel-aged brew. And with that, let your discovery of brewing begin!

I

ndoor entertainment opportunities during Arizona’s summer months are a must. And thanks to the influx of dine-in movie theater concepts in Scottsdale, there is no shortage of luxury (and air-conditioned) options to take in dinner and a show. So, what’s a dine-in theater, you ask? It’s part-theater, part restaurant – with cocktails and not-so-typical food – all in one space. Most dine-in theaters offer adult-only cinemas and luxury seating, often of the leather and reclining variety.

RoadHouse Cinemas This dine-in movie theater, featuring reserved seating and gourmet popcorn (such as jalapeno) as well as a new startof-the-art sound system for the optimum movie-going experience, is Scottsdale’s newest. The Arizona-based RoadHouse Cinemas took over the former space of UltraStar at the Pavilions Shopping Center earlier this year, and after a $3 million renovation and facelift, opened its doors in May. Primarily catering to adults, especially those of drinking age, RoadHouse does not typically permit children under age six, and never permits children under age 13 into R-rated films, whether with a parent or not. Their menu boasts flatbread pizzas, burgers, gelato, root beer floats, gourmet candies and cheesecake as well as happy hour deals and a decent list of wines and local craft beers. They also have an on-site specialty bakery. Not in the mood for a movie?

They also have a full beer, wine and cocktail menu that rival any fabulous Scottsdale restaurant. Menu standouts include the filet mignon sliders, buffalo chicken spring rolls and ratatouille pizza. If you’re in the mood to keep the party going after the movie, iPic also owns Tanzy Restaurant next door, a Las Vegas-inspired restaurant with an award-winning chef, seasonal cocktails and nearly 360-degree views of the Valley. www.ipictheaters.com.

AMC Desert Ridge 18 Though the theater has been around for decades, it wasn’t until late last year that the AMC-owned theater converted over to more a “dine-in” feel, now offering several levels of cinema experiences, including reclining chairs, a wait staff and even adult-only theaters. Of all the local dine-in options, this is probably the most kid- and wallet-friendly. However, it does offer a full bar for those 21 and over called MacGuffins, named in homage to a term coined by Alfred Hitchcock for a plot device that motivates the characters and advances the story, like the ring in “Lord Of The Rings.” Now, we’ll raise our glasses to that kind of motivation! www.amctheatres.com.

Sapporo Scottsdale focuses on Pacific Rim fare of sushi, stir fry and teppanyaki. As the executive chef at Sapporo and the western regional corporate chef for Tavistock Restaurants, Stephen Stromberg shares his passion for Asian cuisine. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A CHEF? My sister and I grew up in a single-parent household in Fort Collins, Colorado. With my mom working, I started cooking for us at a really young age. Most kids opt for video games and sneaking into their parents’ liquor cabinet, but I was more into thawing meat and sneaking into the spice cabinet. By 16, I was not only cooking for my family but also working in restaurants.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Stephen Stromberg of Sapporo Scottsdale BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

HOW DID YOU GET TO ARIZONA? I moved to Boulder, Colorado, to mentor under Chef Kenneth Moody at the Hotel Boulderado in the mid-90s. After three years, we opened Dolan’s, growing it into a Boulder dining hot spot. There, I really fell in love with Asian flavor profiles and seafood. When Moody moved on, I stayed on as the executive chef. Just 22 at the time, it was like being back in my mom’s kitchen, albeit with more ingredients to play around with. After a few years, I missed family and friends and wanted an adventure. Since my dad lived in Arizona, I set out to the Valley. TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO EXECUTIVE CHEF AT SAPPORO. I made a list of 20 Valley restaurants that I liked or heard were cool. My goal was to knock on every door until one gave me an interview. Roy’s was first on my list – and the last. Then-chef Justin Beckett hired me on the spot. Working at Roy’s was like earning a master’s in Asian-influenced cuisine. Beckett was to thank for my next gig, opening Latitudes 30 at the Arizona Grand Resort. I then made stops at Pure Sushi and LGO Hospitality, but when I heard Tavistock Restaurants purchased Sapporo, I again jumped at the chance to be a part of (re)developing a concept from the onset. HOW HAS YOUR ROLE GROWN? In addition to Sapporo, I am now the corporate regional chef for all of Tavistock’s West Coast restaurants, including properties with varied menus and concepts across Arizona, California and Nevada. WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? Most people know I am a competitive runner and triathlete, most recently competing in a 109-mile race, but I am also an urban farmer! I just planted 100 fruit trees at my house to accompany my three gardens. Sapporo Scottsdale, 14344 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.607.1114; www.sapporoscottsdale.com.

t’s time to toast the red, white and blue. Or in this case – red, white and Bink’s. That’s because Bink’s Kitchen + Bar’s lead bartender Sarah Hundley, a master-level mixology maven, has gone all out on an Independence Day drink. “We call it our 1776, in honor of the year the United States earned its independence,” Hundley says. “A limited edition menu spotlight, it’s available until July 31.” Along with creating the 1776 ($12), Hundley also reimagined the rest of the cocktail menu at Bink’s in recent months. While Bink’s could have easily mixed together some red grenadine syrup, white RumChata and Blue Curacao to elicit a similar Fourth of July theme visually, Hundley didn’t go the easy route with this showstopper. In fact, she couldn’t, given Binkley’s Restaurant Group has made the formal move to use fresh juices, fruits and herbs in its cocktails moving forward. “The base is St. George Terroir Gin, which has an earthier flavor profile than a traditional juniper-flavored gin,” Hundley says. “Then, we add St. Germain liqueur to give the cocktail a floral note, followed by Lillet Blanc, which is a very aromatic aperitif wine harvested primarily from sweet moscato grapes in France, a U.S. alley during the Revolutionary War.” Hundley then adds raspberries, blueberries and lemon zest. The final touch? “We create a foam to float on top with Crème de Violette, a brandy liqueur made from actual flowers to keep with the floral notes throughout the cocktail.” Bink’s Kitchen + Bar, 6107 N. adillac’s highly anticipated CT6 large flagship luxury sedan is just now beginning to show up at dealerships. About the same size as a BMW 7-Series, it is intended to assert itself as a worthy alternative to large, super-luxury sedans like the BMW 7-Series, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Lexus, at a lower price point. In the very long rebirth of Cadillac, the brand has struggled to find buyers more than most, with unsold inventory piling up on dealer lots. In mid-2014, GM hired former Audi and Nissan-Infiniti executive Johan de Nysschen to lead global Cadillac sales. In all fairness, the CT6 was well along in development when de Nysschen arrived. But, he’s been upbeat and a

JULY 2016 |

SS_76_77Haute_Wheels_Jul16.indd 77

77

huge supporter of the vehicle, saying the vehicle is “prestige luxury reimagined.” When I first eyed the CT6 last year, I confess I was a bit smitten by its stylish looks that cut an elegant and expensivelooking stage presence. It has gorgeous vertical, jeweled LED light bars in the headlamps and taillights; a sculptured accent across the rear deck lid and the low, wide stance of an exotic Felidae ready to pounce. To be sure, the look won’t be mistaken for anything from Germany. However, the overall design language is a solid triple, if not a home run. But open the door and slip behind the wheel and you’ll find the interior isn’t within a three-iron of attractive. A cynic would take one look at the mixed textured materials that include leather, perforated fabric, carbon fiber elements, chrome accents and glossy wood trim panels and think, “Made in China.” The switchgear is a time capsule that dates back to the Lutz era of GM. Still, there is plenty to like, starting with a choice of three engines. In addition to the standard 2.0-liter, fourcylinder engine, Cadillac offers a 3.6-liter, 335-horsepower V-6 and a 3.0-liter, 400-horsepower, twin-turbo V-6 with all-wheel drive. Each comes with an eightspeed automatic transmission. I tested the mid-trim level Premium Luxury model with all-wheel drive and the 3.6-liter, V-6 engine. On the road, it felt athletic and nimble with sharp steering. Power shows up when you need it, and Sport mode dictated performance sedanlike handling. The best thing about the CT6 is how it drives and handles. I also liked the spectacular Bose Panary sound system – a $3,700 option that includes 34 speakers – and the industry-first rearview mirror that can switch from conventional reflection to a camera view, expanding the field enough to view up to seven lanes of freeway. Overall, the new CT6 is a huge improvement over the Cadillac XTS flagship it replaces and is easily the most advanced Cadillac ever built. And, it does have a price advantage over competitors. However, it lacks the cachet, size, technology and opulence to compete with the full-sized premium luxury sedans.

The Scottsdale-based company keeps the two-story vessel docked on the placid waters of Lake Pleasant, just an hour north of Scottsdale, where it effortlessly outshines the neighboring watercraft. Here, Valley dwellers can find slightly cooler temperatures, although the cruise keeps the air conditioning flowing. The boat’s main cabin, outfitted with nautical decor, merges into a state-of-theart galley. The upper deck, accessible by one of two spiral staircases, features navy and white upholstery beneath twinkling chandeliers. Also onboard are plush sleeping quarters for 12 and two immaculate bathrooms. Since its recent Memorial Day debut, the company is already making waves with a selection of carefully executed excursions, available to the public through online ticket sales. Guests looking for something a little more intimate, however, are scrambling to book the private dinner cruise, a custom voyage for groups of up to 75 people. The 16-by-75-foot upper deck can be set for a formal sit-down meal, although most groups prefer to indulge in butler-passed hors d’oeuvres while

With the opening of the Agua Fria River last month, Out of the Blue Excursions has reworked its evening route to deliver an unparalleled experience. Rather than taking several leisurely laps around the lake, guests are ferried along the narrowing waterway into the depths of the towering canyon, where they’ll raise a glass and toast to good fortune as the sun slips below the horizon. Base pricing for this cruise is $6,500 for parties of up to 30 passengers. Each additional passenger after 30 is $185. orld renowned for its exquisite Native American handcrafted goods, art, sculpture and Southwestern cuisine, Santa Fe is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. Situated 7,200 feet above sea level in New Mexico’s high desert – with summer temps in the mid-80s – it’s the perfect weekend getaway from the Arizona heat.

Must-See Sites

Shop ‘til You Drop

As the oldest city in New Mexico, Santa Fe (which translates to “holy faith”) was founded in 1610 and holds a rich history to discover. Be sure to plan time to visit the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi that dominates the Plaza in downtown Santa Fe. Art enthusiasts will enjoy walking Canyon Road, a street lined with art galleries, as well as exploring the museums along Museum Hill. The Santa Fe Opera performs in a breathtaking outdoor venue every July and August – and this year marks their 60th anniversary season. Historic Walks of Santa Fe (www.historicwalksofsantafe.com) offers daily tours of downtown, as well as specialized tours for art, shopping and food, along with a fun evening ghost tour.

Shopping in Santa Fe draws international crowds as there is no shortage of unique trinkets to peruse and purchase. Start with the Native American vendors selling their merchandise at the Palace of the Governors just behind the Plaza. After that, wander through the unique shops throughout the Plaza area. Trujillo Plaza was once the intake office for the top-secret Los Alamos Scientific Lab in 1943. Today, it houses some quirky artwork. To find a special gift, head to Doodlet’s, an eclectic shop that’s been making people smile for 61 years with hidden treasures spanning folk art, toys, books, cards and nostalgic keepsakes for the young and young-at-heart. New Mexico Noshes Santa Fe is well-known for its innovative, made-from-scratch cuisine using regional and seasonal ingredients. In fact, you could plan an entire trip to Santa Fe around food! A visit to the Santa Fe School of Cooking (www.santafeschoolofcooking.com) affords an up-close-and-personal experience with New Mexican cuisine. Here, you can roll up your sleeves and help prepare your meal, or you can simply watch a demo and enjoy the mouthwatering food. For an authentic meal, dine at Gabriel’s of Santa Fe, located a few minutes north of town. Gabriel’s serves some of the best Old Mexico food you’ll taste and is considered one of America’s best restaurants by Zagat. Along the Plaza, you won’t want to miss Café Pasqual’s, which serves creative cuisine with New Mexican flair in an intimate setting.

Staying in Santa Fe There are a variety of accommodations in downtown Santa Fe. Two of the best are La Posada de Santa Fe, a AAA Four Diamond historic property with elegant rooms, beautiful artwork, a welcoming spa and one of the best patios in town. Another option is Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi, a luxury boutique inn inspired by the region’s early Native American inhabitants. Dinner at Anasazi Restaurant is the perfect end to an idyllic weekend in Santa Fe, a town that truly embraces its mixture of cultures.

NECTAR OF THE GODS A perfect summer spirit by Belvedere BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

V

odka has been a popular go-to spirit in cocktails for decades, due in large part to its chameleon-like ability to pair with a seemingly endless range of other flavors, be it fruit, vegetables, juices, candy and even soda. But thanks to brands like Belvedere, whose Old World approach in distilling its high-end vodka results in enhanced flavor characteristics, including texture and creaminess on the palate, drinking the spirit on its own or with a dash of ice or lemon is now more popular than ever. “With such a devoted following to our flagship vodka, it has only been natural we expand the brand, adding several new varietals to our growing portfolio, including limited edition and seasonal offerings,” says Sadr Amir, business development manager at Belvedere Vodka. “Enter Belvedere Peach Nectar.” Belvedere Peach Nectar is juicy and rich to the taste, with notes of vanilla, ripened peaches and a hint of apricot. On the nose it is bright and aromatic, with a clear citrus note and a light bouquet of toasted almond. “We wanted this summer-focused flavor to be big and rich, with the flavor of peach as the clear star. But, in addition to the peach, we wanted to bring in a little additional sweetness, so we added a hint of almond, vanilla and even a touch of baked marzipan to tickle the nose and palate,” Amir explains. “It is perfect either for those who enjoy their vodka on the rocks or in a splashy summer cocktail.” Belvedere Peach Nectar is available now through September at most grocery and liquor stores across the Valley, starting at $23.99.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Though the newly relocated Grape Bistro has brighter, more modern decor and far more space than its original North Scottsdale home, owner Kellie Kerley was careful to keep long-time guests’ favorite things about the bistro front and center. Among the most beloved items – in addition to the 200 wines by the glass or bottle – is the Strawberry Spinach Salad ($11). Often paired with a white or rosé wine and topped with almonds, goat cheese and strawberry balsamic vinaigrette, it is fresh and flavorful. Add proteins such as salmon, chicken, shrimp or filet mignon for summer salad perfection. 23335 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.305.0907; www.grapebistro.com.

ome of the best things in life are unexpected, right? And when it comes to food, that’s no different. Let it be known you don’t have to go into a restaurant to get a great meal. In fact, there are a number of places dishing out wow-factor foods, yet they they may not be obvious dining choices. We’ve taken out the guesswork of where to grab some tasty grub, no matter if you’re hitting the club (comedy club, that is) or simply filling up on gas. Bon appetit!

Desert Botanical Garden Desert Botanical Garden is home to a host of trails, exhibits and special activities. You can take flashlight tours during the summer months and explore the beauty of the desert at night with a complete sensory experience. There are also workshops where you can learn about planting your own desert landscapes and edible gardens. Gertrude’s, the garden’s on-site restaurant, features menu items that read like a love letter to Arizona. This is the epitome of garden-to tabledining, as the majority of the ingredients are plucked straight from the garden, creating a uniquely local dining experience. Any salad on the menu is a perfect introduction to the vast dishes that pay homage to Arizona and the Southwest with ingredients that thrive in the desert environment and have unique flavor profiles. The quinoa tabbouleh is another dish that embraces and celebrates the flavors of Arizona, and don’t miss out on the blackened scallops. 1201 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix; 480.941.1225; www.gertrudesrestaurant.net.

Musical Instrument Museum The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) features a collection of more than 6,500 instruments from all over the world. As you peruse the museum, you’ll have the opportunity to experience their sounds and see them played in performances that showcase their original context. Among all that culture and music, you’ll also find a menu of from-scratch dishes at the museum’s casual, self-serve restaurant, Café Allegro. Using fresh, local ingredients, the menu includes cuisines of the global, regional and local varieties and offers vegetarian, vegan and kid-friendly options. You’ll even find some exhibit-focused menu items like their recent Johnny Cash and June Carter menu, where folk-country favorites spanned “Man in Black” fried chicken and “Juke Box Blues” macaroni and cheese. Pro tip: Grab one of their housebaked cookies! 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix; 480.478.6000; www.mim.org.

The Comedy Spot – Scottsdale There comes a point in the summertime when the weather is laughable. So, why not embrace it and get out of the heat and into The Comedy Spot? You’ll immediately cool off and have your spirits lifted with acts spanning stand-up, improv and sketch

comedy, including well-known headliners. The intimate venue allows for a more authentic experience, similar to what you’d find in the LA, New York and Chicago clubs. And then there’s the food, which features selections from The Gelato Spot. You can sample items like Caprese salad, a trio of savory dips served alongside focaccia bread, an array of paninis and gourmet wood-fired pizzas. Try the honey basil pizza, which combines three cheeses – fresh mozzarella, gorgonzola and Parmesan – with basil and a honey drizzle for a slightly sweet kick. 7117 E. 3rd Ave., Scottsdale; 480.945.4422; www.thecomedyspot.net.

The Thumb What’s one to do when you need to gas up, wash your car and fill yourself up while you’re at it? Luckily, The Thumb (formerly Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market) can take care of all of the above – and then some. This all-in-one gas station, car wash, auto detail, gift shop, wine and beer store, bakery and restaurant opened in January 2012 with a goal of making mundane daily activities (like filling your car with gas) extraordinary. Here, you can fuel up on breakfast, lunch or dinner. The standout selection is the Southern barbecue, and top sellers are the pulled pork sandwich and brisket sandwich. Pair your entree with the shoestring fries, or delve into the baked mac ‘n’ cheese. 9393 E. Bell Road, Scottsdale; 480.513.8186; www.thethumb.com.

TopGolf TopGolf is much more than just a driving range. It’s a massive entertainment complex with more than 10 bays, three floors and a rooftop terrace where you can practice your swing or gather with friends for an exciting, point-scoring game, whether you’re on your way to the Masters or just playing around. All of that competition is going to make you a little hungry and thirsty. Enter the Bay Hosts, who will serve a variety of cool drinks and tasty foods directly to your bay. The refreshing TopGolf Tea is a play on a Long Island Iced Tea with high-quality spirits, and they frequently feature specials on beer and wine. The food menu spans the sharable, such as bacon mac ‘n’ cheese spring rolls, craft beer queso and a variety of flatbreads to items you’ll want just for yourself, like the to-die-for chicken and waffles sliders. 9500 E. igh Street’s newest tenant, Torch Cigar Bar, is the result of more than just blood, sweat and tears – try about a million frequent flier miles. “To say we did our research would be an understatement,” says owner Jon Harrington, who, with his wife and coowner Kelly, completed the entire Kentucky Bourbon Trail and then made 12 trips in 12 months from Vancouver to Jamaica to seek out the best cigar bars in North America. “From start to finish, we probably visited 40 or 50 cigar bars, and took something – good or bad – from each.” Among the first things they learned – they stink. Literally. “Far more a novice on cigars than Jon, I actually found myself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of smoke in even the most fabulous of bars,” Kelly says. “Let’s be serious – what woman would want to join her man or go out with her girlfriends to a dark, smoky anything?” As a result, the Harrington’s single largest purchase for the bar was a ventilation system that rivals those used by top Las Vegas resorts. It also boasts glass windows throughout and garagestyle doors that open to a massive 1,800-square-foot patio to further ensure

a comfortable atmosphere. “It’s also imperative that cigar bars have an impressive offering of bourbons, whiskeys and scotches from around the world, but they should also have an array great wines and custom cocktails,” says Jon, who worked directly with managing partner Austin Keane, a veteran of Sapporo Scottsdale and McDowell Mountain Ranch Country Club, to develop

a flavor-forward drink menu taking all types of guests into account. Another commonality in many cigar bars: membership required. While Torch is open to the public, the venue also offers a total of 130 VIP memberships, which can be shared or divided between four individuals (say, a golf foursome or two couples, respectively) for $6,000 per year. VIP membership includes a private locker, 20 percent off of all visits to Torch, member-only events, $1,200 in annual bar credit, private concierge services and even a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Whiskey, among other amenities. “Our selection of 200-plus premium cigars, 100 whiskeys, 200 spirits, eight taps, craft cocktails and wines are for everyone,” says Kelly, who notes that while the bar will not serve food, they have partnered with their sister restaurants along High Street for member-only delivery service. “We want to work together to show just how hot High Street has become.” The bar also includes a 400-squarefoot humidor, which allows for retail sales, making it one of the only cigar shops in the immediate area. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
