"Who Did Your Hair?" Scottsdale’s Hair Color Guru, Rod Gentry, is the go-to expert for coloring your tresses

Hair color is tricky. Ensuring the perfect shade, finishing the process with hair that is still healthy, creating the perfect look—there are not many who can do it all or who are known as the go-to expert in color. But now Scottsdale has a color guru. Rod Gentry, one of the industry’s color experts, has relocated from Chicago— where he spent 24 years working in the field—to Scottsdale.

HIS WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE WILL ALLOW THEM TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK THEY WANT; AND THAT THE COLOR WILL BE PERFECT, EVERY TIME. His clients know four main things about Rod: They’ll receive undivided, personalized attention at their appointment (no double booking!); he’ll use only the top and best products to ensure their hair stays healthy; his wealth of knowledge and expertise will allow them to achieve the look they want; and that the color will be perfect, every time. Rod approaches hair color differently than others, first working with a client to determine the look they want, and then taking into account the client’s complexion and lifestyle to make sure that the end result will be something that is both flattering and workable. One of his main focuses is always on the health of the hair, and so he uses only high-end, enzyme-based

developers (rather than peroxide-based ones) so that hair is left in a better condition, and extremely shiny. He also always finishes a color process with a conditioning treatment as part of the color service. “You can have long hair and great color, but if it’s damaged, it won’t look as good,” he explains. He relentlessly pursues education to stay at the top of his field, traveling worldwide to learn about the newest innovative techniques, products and knowledge, training in such places as London and New York. “I really think that education is the key to success,” he explains. Rod’s services include single process color, highlights, color gloss, color paneling, ombre, extended conditioning, color correction, color removal and more, as well as cuttingedge haircuts. “I guarantee my work. Period,” he says.

Hair color specialist Rodney Gentry is located in a private studio at Sachi Studios, 10201 N. Scottsdale Rd., Suite 10, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. For an appointment, please call 480.639.2000, or visit www.rodneygentry.com for more information.

TELL

I think it’s safe to say we are all greeting July with some trepidation. Over the last month, things around town were slowly easing back to normal – until they weren’t. While it’s business as usual more so now than it was during the last few months, we’re entering this month in a state of flux. Places are open and there are things to do, but with vigilance. People are getting out more, but proceeding with caution. As for me, I’ve been sticking to armchair explorations of our city through putting this issue together, staying quarantined at home and only heading out for essentials (Postino to go is an essential, right?). It has been a very interesting and challenging time as the editor of a magazine that relies so much on sharing things to do and places to see with its readers. In this issue, you’ll find a mix of virtual events, at-home activities, and places to explore if you’re up for venturing out – with a mask at the ready, please and thank you. For some virtual fun: book a group wine tasting via Zoom with Wine Spencer, a local Black-owned wine-tasting event company helmed by two sisters (page 35); partake in a wine and popcorn pairing via Instagram Live with local wine bar GenuWine (page 39); take a DIY faux succulent workshop (page 38); or attend LUNAFEST, a film festival highlighting women filmmakers, from the comfort of home (page 39). To upgrade your at-home time: order family-style meals to go that will feed your quarantine crew (page 40); outfit your backyard with summer essentials (page 50) and yourself in equally summery ensembles (pages 52 and 53); or sign up for Give Garden, a subscription cooking activity box perfect for kids and parents to do together (plus it gives back; page 38). If you’re venturing out: escape the heat at Northern Arizona wineries, where you can socially distance on outdoor patios (page 42); plan a late 2020/early 2021 culinary adventure at Terra Farm + Manor in Prescott National Forest (page 68); do a daycation at Hotel Valley Ho (page 36); exercise your creative side at Scottsdale ArtWalk, which returns with a sweet theme of Art & Chocolate on July 9 (page 38); sip on colorful summer cocktails (page 70); or savor artfully crafted sushi (page 74). And, finally, it simply wouldn’t be Arizona without AZ Family, the award-winning station that helps many of us start our days with Good Morning Arizona. Our cover features AZ Family producer and reporter Jessica Parsons. After a storied career that’s brought her back to AZ Family time and again, she has found her home there, where she shines a light on people and organizations in the community and aims to inspire others to make a difference, which is something we could all use a little more of, especially these days. Read her story on page 32. While summer 2020 certainly isn’t what any of us expected, I hope that you can glean some inspiration and ideas from this issue to make the most of it – safely and with the well-being of yourself and others top of mind. A Competitive Market

REALTOR LISA ROBERTS EXPLAINS THE POWERFUL UPSWING IN THE HOUSING MARKET AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU

THE REAL ESTATE market is very hot right now. Home prices are regaining—and surpassing—pre-COVID levels and won’t be decreasing any time soon. Super low mortgage rates are motivating buyers, increasing demand. Just recognized as Top 10 Realtors for Volume sold in Arizona by REAL Trends, Realtor Lisa Roberts offers tips whether you’re buying, selling, or staying put.

Q: WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU OFFER SELLERS? Roberts: People may not realize it, but the market is moving and recovering quickly, making it an ideal time to list your home for sale. And it’s only improving with each month! There is a surge in demand, with double the number of contracts over $500k than there was this time last year. In fact, the number of contracts has increased over 70% since April 5th, 2020.

Q: WHAT DOES THE SCOTTSDALE AND PHOENIX AREA INVENTORY LOOK LIKE? Lisa Roberts: Inventory is extremely low right now. There is a total surge in the housing market and it’s a frenzy. Buyers are outnumbered by sellers many times over so sellers have the upper hand in this market. However, for buyers, it’s still a great time to buy because interest rates are at a historic low. Contracts are up 70% since April 5th and up 179% in past 2.5 months, so things are moving! We have over 1,000 more houses under contract this year compared to the same time last year.

Q: WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU OFFER BUYERS? Roberts: There is not enough inventory on the market right now, which is driving up house prices. We are only going to see it get worse for buyers if they wait. Summer is generally slow in the real estate market; however, as of right now, there is an increase of 18% under contract houses than this time last year. Right now, things are on fire!

Q: SHOULD I BUY NOW OR WAIT? Roberts: Prices are increasing due to the low inventory. Since 2015 prices have gone up almost every month in the Scottsdale and Phoenix Area. Because interest rates now are so low, we are at the same buying power as two years ago even though prices are higher. So, if buyer can afford the payment and has a good job, it’s a fabulous time to buy before price and interest rates go back up.

Q: HOW DO YOU HELP YOUR CLIENTS STAY AHEAD OF THE MARKET DURING THIS PANDEMIC? Roberts: The secret sauce to my success—and any Realtor’s success—is staying up to date with the ever-changing market. I stay educated on exactly what is happening in this crazy real estate market week by week. By doing so, I’m able to show value to past and current clients. In any market, follow-up and staying in communication with clients is so important. Contact Lisa Roberts for a free consultation on how the market is doing in your specific neighborhood and what she can do to achieve top dollar. 480.232.3291.

A HELPING HAND

Amid COVID-19, Heather Clark pivots and expands her company, Pomchies, while giving back

Heather Clark, the co-founder and CEO of Pomchies (www. pomchies.com), started her business to take care of scraps. Clark, who was born in Wisconsin and grew up on the East Coast before going to college in Switzerland, started a sun protective swimwear company while living in Asia. When she

closed the company almost 20 years ago, Clark was left to figure out what to do with the spare pieces of fabric, and the idea for Pomchies was born. The scraps of swim fabric she used for the brand’s hair and travel accessories proved to be so popular that today, Pomchies

Pulse UP CLOSE products are still made of the UV-protectant material, which is not only vibrantly colored, but waterproof, stretchy and easily washable. Over the years, globetrotting Clark hopped from the Philippines to Thailand to develop Pomchies factories, eventually moving production to Vietnam. Her experiences with different cultures while living abroad taught her the importance of adaptability, a lesson that proved useful just a few years down the line. Clark soon expanded her business to meet the demand for new patterns, colors and styles, eventually selling her products in more than 2,000 stores, boutiques, bookstores and schools across the country. Pomchies accessories, which can also be found in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Thailand, Japan and Australia, have been featured on platforms as ubiquitous as the Today show. But things started to change a few months ago when the coronavirus pandemic shook the world. The majority of Clark’s orders were cancelled in early March of this year, and she had to think fast to save her company. Seeing the demand for face masks, Clark asked her factory in Vietnam for a prototype mask. The samples were perfect. Now, the employees of Pomchies make more than 5,000 Pom Masks every day. “It’s been amazing to see how many people have pitched in to help us promote the masks, and that’s really what allowed us to grow this line so rapidly,” Clark says. “The masks protect others, and my circle helped protect my business from failure. It feels amazing.” With so many types of fabric on hand, Pomchies was specially equipped to launch this new line. To date, Clark has sold over 300,000 two-packs of Pom Masks, which are nonmedical and intended for ages 6 and up. Each purchase helps more people follow CDC guidelines by keeping themselves and others safe from airborne sources of infection, in addition to saving essential medical-grade masks for health professionals.

Paying it Forward For Clark, this is just another initiative in a long history of using her company to support others. Pomchies has made donations to more than a dozen organizations since it was founded in 2002, including Defenders of Children, Special Olympics Arizona, Teach for America, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix. In addition, a portion of all proceeds from Pomchies’ pet products – which include leash accessories and bow ties – are donated to a different animal-based charity every quarter. “Helping others is a big part of who we have been forever,” Clark says. “My parents always gave back by donating time and money and by exposing us to so many things, including hosting refugees from Asia in our home. It’s in my DNA as part of my family tradition to give back.” Through it all, Clark’s family has not only been a positive influence, but a wellspring of strength as times began to change and business ramped up. “It’s been a blessing to have my son assist me in the customer service arena. He lives in Seattle and is able to work his

day job remotely, so he came here to Phoenix to assist us in this massive endeavor,” Clark says. “My parents and my husband, Harry, are also constant sources of inspiration, as they are all go-getters. My mom has been helping me in the office, while Harry always has amazing words of encouragement.” With the help of her loved ones, Clark has used this time to seek out ways to make her company, which also sells scrunchies, headbands and luggage tags, even more efficient. “Those around me have helped me streamline our processes to make things easier and allow us to ship as rapidly as possible. This pandemic helped me innovate our product line and our process – two things I would not have expected.” At the end of the day, persistence can lead to great things. Clark’s quick thinking rescued Pomchies, and she encourages other business owners who may be struggling to look to each other for strength and know that everyone is in this together. But above all, Clark says to never give up, especially not when things get tough. For entrepreneurs in particular, the ability to look for opportunities when presented with challenges is a critical skill, and there’s no better time than the present to practice. “Keep at it, because the business will come back to life and you need to be ready to seize every opportunity,” Clark says. “Just remember it’s never too late to pivot and change your own life.”

A GOOD SPORT

How fate and fitness led Andrew Sampson to financial services

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Andrew Sampson believes that it isn’t the athlete that picks the sport, but the sport that picks the athlete. “Early on, I meant this literally,” Sampson says. “Later, it became a metaphor for my life.” The Arizona native played multiple sports from age 6 into high school until a hip injury sidelined him from many, including football. As a result, he found track. “Something clicked when I put my feet into those starter blocks,” Sampson says. Track not only found him, but when he moved to Washington senior year, it led him to a state championship in the 100-yard dash. It also led him back to Arizona and into the fitness field. “After getting my start in gyms, I founded my own personal training business in the Valley in 2005,” Sampson says. By 2009, Sampson was considering his next move. A friend who worked in finance began bending his ear about getting into that field. “He preached about how the principles of helping people with their financial goals were no different than helping them with their wellness goals,” says Sampson, who took a chance, joining Edward Jones in 2010. Feeling as though the industry chose him, Sampson’s passion for helping people through goal setting, accountability and discipline was an immediate fit. Life was humming along until 2012, when his first child, Avrie, was born prematurely at just 13 ounces. “Financially, we were prepared. Thank God, because emotionally we were not,” says Sampson, whose daughter persevered and is celebrating her eighth birthday this month. The experience, and Sampson’s desire to do more to help families like his as well as small business owners like he was for so many years, led him to family-owned Wilde Wealth Management Group in 2015. The move gave him the ability to provide comprehensive retirement, investment, mortgage, insurance, legal and tax planning services to clients all under one roof. Wilde also gives the now-father of two flexibility for family time and the ability to give back through the firm’s community outreach efforts, including a recent program in light of COVID-19 to help Child Crisis Arizona provide 6,000 curbside meals to families in need. “I will always be an athlete at heart,” Sampson says. “But now, I feel chosen every day by the sport of helping others.”

BREWED FOR THE TROOPS Kimberly Guimarin founded Pop’s Coffee to celebrate her father and pay it forward

BY KAYLOR JONES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

As the founder and CEO of Pop’s Coffee (www. popscoffee.net), Kimberly Guimarin sells great coffee for an even better cause. A former corporate litigation paralegal, Guimarin is a dedicated wife and mom of two who is inspired by family. “As a woman, I proudly wear many titles – wife, mother, chauffeur, chef, CEO and daddy’s girl.” When her kids began to spend more time at school and the entrepreneurial spirit came calling, Guimarin looked to her father for encouragement. “Throughout my life, my father has taught me not only by his words, but by his amazing example,” she says. “He instilled in me that I can do anything I set my mind to and that my only limitations are those I place upon myself.” To honor her coffee-loving father, known as “Pop” to his grandchildren, Guimarin founded Pop’s Coffee. Each of Pop’s high-end, artisanal coffees starts with Arabica beans grown by sustainable, fair-trade farmers in Nicaragua. They are roasted in small batches by a master roaster in Minnesota, available for purchase as ground or whole beans via the Pop’s Coffee website, and mailed within a week of each order. “With every sip of Pop’s Coffee, you’re living my father’s legacy of strength, integrity, passion and compassion – and that’s enough to keep you going all day!” she says. At the heart of Guimarin’s business is the Pop’s Fundraising Program, which allows organizations such as schools, youth programs and nonprofits to retain 50% of all sales from coffee sold with no out-ofpocket costs. “I’m proud to say that Pop’s Coffee is a company that lives by its values and is committed to enriching the lives of other people and causes,” Guimarin says. In addition, with every bag of coffee purchased, Pop’s Coffee donates a bag to U.S. troops. “From my husband’s great uncle, who stormed the beaches of Normandy, and my great uncle, who survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor, to our siblings, nephews and cousins currently serving, both my husband’s and my family have a long and proud history of military service,” Guimarin says. “The freedoms and opportunities I have as an American come with a price, a price paid by those in serving in our military. Treating our troops to a great bag of great coffee is my way of saying thank for your service.” So Scottsdale! July ‘20

Matthew Shields dresses to impress in classic-cool ensembles with edge BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Matthew Shields describes his fashion sensibilities as sharp and professional with a dash of SoCal style. Originally from Nashville, Shields works in the medical device industry and is passionate about self-growth and helping others. On workdays, you can find him in a trendy sports coat and dress pants or a suit with no tie, but on weekends, he turns to cuffed fitted jeans or shorts and V-neck or crew neck T-shirts. “My career and personal styles are totally different; however, I can go from a sharp suit to walking on the Venice Beach Boardwalk in seconds,” Shields says. Some of Shields’ favorite brands include Buck Mason, Bonobos, Magnanni, and Ted Baker London for the quality fit, while he relies on J.Hilburn, Topman and Tommy Hilfiger for well-fitted suits with an edge. And speaking of edge, Shields doesn’t shy away from bold colors and styles. “I love wearing raspberry and maroon,” he says. “I also love plaid and patterns, and I’m a big fan of the sneakers with no socks and ankle-high slacks trend.” When it comes to style, Shields advises pushing the envelope. “Don’t be scared to move out of your comfort zone,” he says. “You never know who you’ll meet or strike up a conversation with because of something you are wearing!”

THE BOLDER, THE BETTER Leah Bold Mondlick’s signature style is all about color

BY CHELSEA YOUNG / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Living up to her maiden name, Leah Bold Mondlick describes her style as bold and vibrant yet also timeless. “I love bright colors, especially pinks and reds,” Mondlick says. “You’ll typically find me in something colorful. I also love prints, florals, textures, added details like ruffles, and pieces that show character.” With a career as a leasing manager for Taubman, a luxury mall developer, Mondlick’s job – which involves traveling to shopping centers throughout the U.S. – has a huge influence on her style. “My job takes me to fashion houses and shopping malls across the country, so I’m constantly around fashion and see each new season launch in showrooms or see stores turn merchandise in the mall,” Mondlick says. “I love it because I feel like I get a firsthand look at the styles and colors that are trending for the next season.” As a mom of two boys (with a girl due in October), Mondlick gravitates toward a variety of brands, including Aritzia, Alice & Olivia, Ulla Johnson, Saint Laurent, and Lululemon for athleisure – especially for comfort when spending time with her kids. But no matter what outfit she’s wearing, you’ll always find Mondlick rocking her key accessory: a bold lip. “My signature look includes a vivid bright pink or red lipstick,” she says. “A pop of color on my lips just pulls any outfit together by day or night.”

Who would you trade closets with? Rachel Zoe. Her style is timeless and memorable. We share a lot of the same vision in our styles. Tell us your No. 1 style tip. Wear something that fits right and makes you feel confident and comfortable. Add a pop of color! What is your must-have item? Accessories to complete any look. For AZ Family producer and reporter Jessica Parsons, the third time’s a charm

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Jessica Parsons believes that if a little is good, then more must be better. “I’ve certainly applied that philosophy to my work at AZ Family, given I’ve left and come back three times,” Parsons says. The seeds for what grew into Parsons’ passion for storytelling were sewn in the Valley, where she grew up in the 1980s. “It all started with my parents,” Parsons says. “Their specialty was taking small moments and turning them into big life lessons.” One of her most memorable lessons came in early grade school. “While watching TV, I told my dad that everyone needed to know the information being shared,” says Parsons, who doesn’t recall the exact stories that evening but remembers the conversation as if it were yesterday. In response, Parsons’ father – recognizing her love of the written and spoken word – asked her how she might one day help share important facts with the masses. A lightbulb went off, and Parsons practically screamed, “By being on the news!” After vowing to eventually work in news, she even convinced iconic local newsman Dave Munsey to let her shadow him for a school project on careers when she was a teenager. “Exploring his station – especially the control room – was epic,” Parsons says. “The energy I felt from the lights, cameras and never-ending action that day was electric.”

32

So Scottsdale! July ‘20

After graduating from Corona del Sol High School in 1990, Parsons studied journalism at Arizona State University. During this time she earned an unpaid internship at 12 News before her first big break came just a few months later. “AZ Family offered me an internship for $5 per hour,” Parsons says. “I worked every shift I could to absorb it all, even in the middle of the night.” Impressed by her drive, the news director offered her a rare opportunity. “They were starting a show called Good Morning Arizona, and he said I just became the luckiest intern alive, because I would get to stay on to intern for it,” she says. Her job was rough. Starting at 4 a.m. most days of the week, Parsons organized crews, welcomed guests, and kept an ear on the police scanners for breaking news, while still carrying a full load of classes. “Only motherhood was more exhausting, but not by much,” says Parsons, who graduated in 1994 and stayed on with the station, eventually as a producer, leading the charge on major national news including the Oklahoma City bombing, the O.J. Simpson trial, and the JonBenét Ramsey case. “Speaking of motherhood, I sort of have AZ Family to thank for that, too.” That’s because Parsons met her husband there. “It was 1995, and I was settling into my new role as a line producer for the show,” Parsons says. “And while we worked opposite schedules, I couldn’t help but notice Jeffrey Parsons in the editing halls.” The two often exchanged pleasantries and were strictly friends until one fateful weekend. “A co-worker invited me on a camping trip to Bartlett Lake, an invitation I initially declined,” Parsons says. “Then Jeff called, saying he wished I was going.” Parsons changed course and braved the great outdoors. The couple has been together ever since, but not without a challenge or two. “In 1996 and only six months into dating, I was offered my first reporting job. I had to take it – that was the dream, the goal all along. But it was 1,400 miles away at the Fox station in Memphis,” Parsons says. While it was exhilarating to be on air, she missed Jeff – and Arizona. “I moved back in 1997 without a job,” Parsons says. “Thankfully, AZ Family came calling again.”

RETURNING TO HER ROOTS

For the next several years, Parsons worked multiple positions at the station, though nothing on air, and married Jeff in 2000. Soon, the two began focusing on other dreams beyond the station and their own careers. “In 2002, we started talking about kids, and I wondered if it was time to try something new,” Parsons says. “I got my real estate license and left the station once again.” Within a year, Parsons welcomed a son, Casey, and started an initially lucrative career in real estate, working with developers in DC Ranch and Silverleaf. “The recession quickly put an end to that by 2008,” Parsons says. She found freelance work as a writer, producer and copy editor over the next five years, notably producing Arizona Highways TV. By 2015, Parsons’ love of local TV news got her back to where it all began. Good Morning Arizona contacted her, needing help enterprising live and in-studio segments. And in 2017, she earned her first on-camera interview as a reporter and producer. “My dad’s response was priceless,” Parsons says. “He quipped that there is nothing like a long-term goal that takes a very long time to come to fruition.” Today, Parsons says her third time around at Good Morning Arizona has been the most rewarding, both in front of and behind the camera. “I love sharing stories of Arizona nonprofits and educating viewers on how to get involved,” says Parsons, who also reports on and produces one of the show’s most popular franchises, the Emmynominated Field Trip Friday. “Through it, we highlight both smalltown America and big cities alike, while showcasing local businesses.” And during COVID-19, bringing the news to Arizona viewers has taken on an enhanced meaning for Parsons. “Now more than ever, we’ve been shining a light on community members who need help the most,” she says. “My greatest hope working on Good Morning Arizona is that we inspire folks to get involved. If we can deliver the news, bring a little levity to people, and make a difference in our community, then I feel we’re doing our jobs. It’s a profound trifecta. And I’ve learned in my life that all things go well in threes.”

GRAPE ESCAPES Northern Arizona wineries worth the drive

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Missing patio weather? Consider a drive up north, where it's cooler all year long and especially nice right now compared to the heat at home. Enjoy a glass of wine with friends at any of these tasting rooms, all just an hour or two from the Valley.

Page Springs Cellars A family-owned winery and vineyard tucked into the volcanic landscape overlooking Oak Creek Canyon, Page Springs Cellars is just 90 minutes north of Greater Phoenix and produces Rhonestyle wines, working primarily with syrah, petite sirah, grenache and mourvedre grapes. Beyond its indoor tasting room, the vineyard offers the option to enjoy wine on the front porch, which is outfitted with comfortable outdoor furniture and spaced to ensure social distancing. There is also an expansive back terrace, offering views of the entire vineyard as well as a walkway to savor wine closer to the actual vines. A bistro menu includes cheeseboards, paninis, brick-fired pizzas, and shareable plates that pair beautifully with the wines. Vineyard yoga, massages and even hoop dancing programs are also offered but require reservations. A bonus: In recent months, Page Springs began offering Vitae Spirits craft rums, gins and liqueurs. As with the wines, the spirits are available in tasting flights as well as by the bottle to take and enjoy at home. www.pagespringscellars.com.

Javelina Leap Winery Just half a mile from Page Springs is Javelina Leap, which makes about 3,000 cases of estate-grown wine each year – meaning all wines are made from grapes grown on the property – and is across the street from both a bird sanctuary (tip: bring your binoculars) and the Page Springs Hatchery. The combination vineyard and winery is earning more and more accolades, which has, in turn, helped them expand the tasting room space in recent years. Of particular note are both the cozy indoor-outdoor bistro as well as the patio, which has a newly added cactus garden. As with Page Springs, there is a kitchen and chef on staff that delights in creating locally sourced small plates and entrees. However, beyond the savory items is something truly special: truffles! Along with tasting flights, housemade sangria, and wines by the glass and bottle are decadent, scratch-made chocolate truffles made specifically to pair with the wines, especially the red varietals. www.javelinaleapwinery.com.

Southwest Wine Center Just 20 minutes west of Page Springs is the town of Clarkdale. And while small, the region is mighty when it comes to wine, thanks in great part to the Southwest Wine Center, which is home to Yavapai College’s viticulture and enology program. The full-scale winery

and farm features a 13-acre teaching vineyard where students of all ages take part in the ultimate hands-on approach to learning. But don’t worry, you don’t have to sign up for classes to enjoy the area’s wine. Nestled into the vineyard is an opulent tasting room and patio, where wine tastings are available Saturday and Sunday by reservation. Limited to ensure social distancing, samples of their most recent azcentral Wine Competition, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, and Jefferson Cup Invitational Wine Competition winners are all available. www.southwestwinecenter.com.

Chateau Tumbleweed Also open by reservation only Friday to Sunday each week this summer, fellow Clarkdale tasting room and patio Chateau Tumbleweed was born out of four friends’ – all veterans of the Arizona wine industry – desire to build something from the ground up. The friends source their grapes from both Verde Valley and Willcox, which are Arizona’s premier wine-growing regions. The patio is safely socially distanced while still feeling intimate, with greenery and wildflowers circling the space and picnic tables throughout. There are red, white and rosé tastings and glass and bottle options as well as great views at sunset. Still new to the scene, the winery is already attracting big attention, including a recent interview on PBS’ popular Start Up series. www.chateautumbleweed.com.

Alcantara Vineyards Outdoor enthusiasts will love Alcantara, which is about 90 minutes from the Valley. The family-owned vineyard is focused on sustainable farming and offers nearly 20 varietals to taste and purchase along with antipasto, cheese and dessert plates. Plus, it not only has a massive deck overlooking the Verde River and its vines, but also offers kayak tours before tasting. Thanks to a partnership with Sedona Adventure Tours, groups of two to 10 can reserve this package in advance, which costs $108.50 per person on weekdays and $120 per person on weekends. Once reserved, guests meet outside of the vineyard and are whisked directly to the Verde River. After a safety briefing, a guide leads the group on a wet and wild journey in inflatable kayaks along the river, which only has a few very mild rapids that even a beginner can navigate. After the tour, sit back and relax with a custom wine tasting on the patio, or use a $20 credit (given to those who purchase a kayak tour) to buy a bottle, open and enjoy. www.alcantaravineyard.com.

Clear Creek Vineyard & Winery Located in Camp Verde, Clear Creek has the distinction of being the first Silver Certified Arizona winery by the Sustainability Alliance. Featuring all estate-grown wines, the winery currently offers tastings Wednesday through Sunday, and while reservations are not required, they are recommended to ensure outdoor seating with a view of the property’s pond and lush greenery. Gourmet picnic lunches and cheese boards are also available if reserved in advance. For something more intimate, consider the winery’s party bus option – affectionately called Club Rio – which is a retired school bus outfitted with custom artwork on the outside and a sound system on the inside. www.clearcreekwineryaz.com. PAINTING THE DESERT Watercolor artist and designer Paige Poppe delivers happiness through color

BY HEATHER LYNN HORVAT

So Scottsdale! July ‘20

An Arizona native, Paige Poppe creates art that puts the vibrant colors of nature on display while spreading the joy of color. “Growing up, I took Arizona and the desert for granted. It wasn’t until I left for college and came home for breaks that I realized how vibrant the desert is,” Poppe says. “Now, I want to show people the many colors to be found in the desert and nature.” Poppe’s degree in architecture helped her see the world differently in terms of light and dark, shapes, and spatial awareness. Poppe also took watercolor classes, introducing her to blending colors, and she began painting as a form of self-care as a sophomore at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. “This was a way to get back in touch with my artistic self,” Poppe says. “Then, with the online maker movement and the creative community growing in Phoenix and Scottsdale, I realized painting could be a career. It felt very right and makes me so happy.” Poppe has an entire product line based on her original art, including a giftable line of more than 300 products like candles and earrings, all under $50. Her products are carried in shops around the Valley and beyond, with a large selection available at Leela Market in Old Town Scottsdale. Original artwork can also be viewed and purchased on her website (www.paigepoppe.com), where she also sells children’s books and a coloring book she illustrated. One of Poppe’s favorite endeavors is a wall calendar, which is going into its fourth year. “It’s a great way to enjoy art and change it up throughout the year. I love being able to see my inspiration carry through to the final product. Plus, it’s a fun process to design each page in a way that’s different but has a cohesive theme.” Poppe gets much of her inspiration from observing nature in different ways, whether she’s going for a walk or bike ride. “Every day I photograph images or memories that inspire me,” says Poppe, who then uses these photos to create her illustrations. Poppe often combines two original art pieces digitally. Her artwork is usually a combination of watercolor and colored pencils or pastels to give each piece textural contrast. Additionally, Poppe also does commissioned work, most of which are large-scale pieces. In collaborating with each client, she marries their vision with her flair for color. One of her favorite projects was painting 12 murals in the cabins at the Bob & Renee Parsons Leadership Center for Girls and Women at Camp South Mountain. “I used to be a Girl Scout myself and it was such an honor to be the sole artist to create the pieces,” she says. In collaboration with the local Girl Scout Council, the murals honor women and seek to spark the imagination of the girls. “For me, art is a form of storytelling, of creating a different world and sharing my interpretation with others. I want to spread happiness through bright, bold colors.”

Permanent Make-up

& BEYOND Microblading

BEYOND MICROBLADING As a permanent make up technician and trainer for nearly 30 years I’ve seen many trends come and go. These days one of the first things I hear from people inquiring about services is “I don’t want tattooed eyebrows. I want the soft powdery look that you did for my friend.” This is when I educate the public on the truth about permanent make up and the truth is it’s all tattoo. Years ago when permanent make up was just a fledgling industry in this country many of us worked in the offices of plastic surgeons. We called the procedure micro pigment implantation. Then different techniques were marketed using trade words like soft tap, and recently microblading has been all the rage. Known as the “queen of conservative” My specialty is custom blending colors for each person. Shape, color, technique and science are what create the artistry for beautifully natural eyebrows. Eyelash enhancements. Due to the lockdown most people have lost their eyelash extensions. This is the perfect time to touch up permanent eyeliner before reapplying lashes. I love to create a rich smokey looking lash line rather than a harsh eyeliner look. Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

STRESS-FREE MOVING WITH GET YOUR MOVE ON Not only does Get Your Move On offer easy and affordable storage and moving solutions but the team delivers a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Over 1 million people downsize every year, and it is no small task. “We call this rightsizing. Get Your Move On provides an expert level of project management resources from the estate sale to fine art to automobiles. Derek and his team even work with Realtors to pack belongings and stage a home. “We figure out how to manage these resources so that our clients don’t have to worry. We have vetted all of our resources and built long term relationships with many estate sellers, art dealers, and more.” Derek and his team are committed to providing their clients with a Pampered Moving Process, including those with a tight deadline. “We walk our clients through the process for a quick move so that they can focus on what’s important. Along with

that, we help those who are downsizing to understand that it’s more cost-effective to donate items versus pack and store them,” Derek explains. 2020 RANGE ROVER VELAR Near-perfect execution of design and performance BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS 2020 Range Rover Velar

New Range Rover models have been somewhat rare over the last 50 years. But recently, the British automaker introduced the Velar, a midsized two-row beauty that slots between the smaller Evoque and larger Range Rover Sport. The luxury vehicle is available in four trim levels, including the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition tested here. The Dynamic boasts a supercharged 5.0-liter, 550-horsepower V-8 engine with 502 pound-feet of torque and an eight-speed automatic transmission to power its all-wheel drive setup. It reaches 60 mph from a standing start in 3.8 seconds, and it smoothly and effortlessly conquers a quarter-mile in just 12.2 seconds. It’s not the same type of enjoyment you get from driving a Porsche 911, but it will bring a smile to your face nonetheless. Though most won’t venture beyond a paved road in a Velar, it still possesses world-class capabilities. It’s arguably the best off-roader in its segment and comes standard with a terrain response system, a locking rear differential, a low-speed crawl control system, and adaptive air suspension. Instantly recognizable as a Range Rover, the Velar distinguishes itself with a unique front

bumper design, larger air inlets, an integrated lower spoiler, 21-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers, an exaggerated sloping roofline, and four extra-large exhaust pipes. The Velar’s minimalist cabin is a celebration of rich materials with superb fit and finish. There’s room for five on the heated and cooled Windsor leather seats, which are accented by comfortable suede bolsters. The front seats come equipped with power massaging, while the rear seats include power reclining. The center console features two 10-inch touch screens, with the upper screen operating navigation and infotainment functions including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The lower screen and two dials control the climate and seat settings, drive modes and other functions. The downside of this system is that it can require a lot of driver attention. With formidable competition, it’s no easy task to stand out from the crowd. But the Velar’s impressive performance, futuristic styling, luxurious interior, and overall addictive driving experience make it a compelling choice despite the nearly six-figure price tag.

A GOURMET GETAWAY

Terra Farm + Manor offers a one-of-a-kind adventure in Prescott National Forest

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOS COURTESY OF TERRA FARM + MANOR

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: A culinary adventure in the Arizona wilderness. The destination: Terra Farm + Manor. Located on 100 acres in Prescott National Forest about an hour from the historic and charming city of Prescott, Terra Farm + Manor is unlike almost any other vacation destination on the planet. The three-part gourmand getaway – a working farm, a vineyard and an exclusive guest manor – is the brainchild of chef James Porter who Valley residents will likely best remember as the man behind Petite Maison, an award-winning fine dining eatery in Scottsdale. Beyond Petite Maison, however, Porter’s culinary resume goes back to the early 1990s when, after attending Scottsdale Culinary Institute, he was accepted into the coveted apprenticeship program at The Greenbrier, one of the country’s preeminent luxury resorts and dining destinations. From there, Porter spent more than 25 years honing his craft, notably as the chef de cuisine of Arizona Biltmore; chef de cuisine of The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida; executive chef of Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi; and as chef-owner of Scottsdale’s now-closed Tapino Kitchen & Wine Bar. In envisioning the idea of Terra Farm + Manor, Porter drew inspiration from all of his years in the kitchen as well as from Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a high-end farm-to-table restaurant in New York serving tasting menus in a refurbished barn, and Fäviken, a similar concept in Sweden that was known for its 30-course dining experiences. When Porter sold Petite Maison in 2014, he began to draw up plans for his culinary dream: an epicurean oasis in The Grand Canyon State. And after nearly five years, in 2019, Porter made his ambitious dream a reality with Terra Farm + Manor.

The Lodging Reservations must be made in advance to stay at Terra, and the property is limited to no more than 16 guests at a time, often capping it at just eight to 10 to ensure a supremely intimate journey. Stays are all-inclusive and offered as three-, four- and five-day experiences. Once booked, the journey begins at an undisclosed location in Prescott, where guests are picked up by private transportation and whisked deep into Prescott National Forest. After about 15 miles along a dirt road into the forest, a magnificent stone gate appears as if from nowhere. Upon reaching the gate, the property reveals itself. Stunning and sprawling, within Terra’s 100 acres lies a vineyard, planted farm land, greenhouses, pastured land, rustic barns, orchards, wildflowers, forest trails, black walnut trees, towering cottonwood trees, a fishing pond, a 3,000-square-foot lodge, and

animals including Iberian pigs, Spanish turkeys and Japanese beef cattle. Within the lodge are eight guest suites, including one 700-square-foot master suite with a large soaking tub, a walk-in shower, and a romantic private patio. There are no TVs at Terra, but Wi-Fi is included with all stays. Attached to the lodge are both a 1,500-square-foot cooking studio as well as an 8,000-squarefoot patio with sparkling twinkle lights, a pizza oven, a cast-iron cooking pit, and a French stove. The entire property is powered by solar power and propane. Once checked in, guests are given an itinerary for the long weekend. Most weekends are given a central theme, be it cooking, wine pairings, or food and photography.

The Experience Each stay begins with a lavish welcome reception and a custom tour of the property and amenities. After breakfast each day, guests can expect about three hours of hands-on instruction in cooking, farming and/or wine blending (and tasting) followed by lunch and then a host of optional recreational activities both onand off-site. On-site activities include bocce ball, hiking, sporting clays, fly fishing, archery, guided nature walks, hatchet throwing, yoga, horseback riding, meditation, and indoor and outdoor games such as corn hole, pingpong, poker and darts. Off-site activities – some of which are an added cost and can be booked upon arrival – include golf lessons with a golf pro, helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon, massage services, and kayak tours of the nearby Verde River. Each night is capped by a themed six- to 10-course dinner – held alfresco on the patio weather permitting – with wines from around the world (Terra vineyard wines included when ready in two to three years), locally sourced cheeses, and dishes made entirely with items grown or raised on-property from fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs to meat like wagyu beef, poultry and fowl. Erich Schultz from Valley-based Steadfast Farm leads the bountiful vegetable and fruit farming program, and the results of his harvests are a particular high note. After each dinner, guests can relish drinks, stargazing, fire pits, and hand-rolled cigars. Terra Farm + Manor is now accepting reservations for fall 2020 and will open 2021 reservations by month’s end. Notable themed programming coming this fall includes Exploration: Wine & Food, Flavors of France, Truffles, and Masterclass in Handmade Pasta. Rates start at $2,250 per room (double occupancy) for three-day adventures and go up to $11,000 per room for five-day adventures. Learn more and book online at www.terrafarmandmanor.com. Fox Ox executive chef Rochelle Daniel delights in bringing diners contemporary fare with bold rural Italian flavors. Among her stellar seasonal summer dishes is the Bellwether Farms Roasted Tomato Ricotta ($12). The sheep’s milk ricotta, which is so fluffy it almost has the consistency of a marshmallow, is sourced from Bellwether Farms in Northern California and folded with housemade tomato conserva to infuse brightness before plating. It is topped with roasted summer tomatoes and a pesto-like sauce made from olive oil, lemon, orange, parsley, basil and a puree of Italian herbs as well as artichoke petals cooked with lemon, thyme and herbs. The dish is finished with bitter dandelion greens dressed in shallot vinaigrette and crispy shallots cooked in charcoal to bring out their sweetness. The result is light and creamy, yet also rustic and rich. Fat Ox, 6316 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.307.6900; www.ilovefatox.com. So Scottsdale! July ‘20

TROPICAL OASIS

Tommy Bahama brings the island life to desert dwellers with its Grapefruit Basil Martini

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

When you walk into Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar, you are on island time. “Every element of our restaurant is designed to transport one from the desert to the beach without ever leaving the Valley,” says Rob Aspaas, cocktail director and regional manager of restaurants for Tommy Bahama. This is especially true when it comes to the beverage menu, featuring 17 island-inspired signature cocktails all summer long. “People often assume we’re a rum bar,” Aspaas says. “And while we have amazing rum cocktails, a point of pride for us is using all types of spirits on the menu.” Beloved for its tart and tangy flavor profile, the Grapefruit Basil Martini ($13.50) is a popular offering for those looking for something beyond traditional rum cocktails. “While they grow throughout Arizona now, grapefruit was actually discovered in Barbados in the mid-1700s when two orange varietals crossed paths,” Aspaas says. “A bonus: During summer months they are extra juicy.” Each day, Tommy Bahama bar members hand-squeeze 50 to 75 grapefruits solely for the cocktail, using the juice of approximately one grapefruit in each individual drink. “We combine the grapefruit juice in a shaker we’ve muddled with fresh basil, which is actually native to tropical regions around the world, along with ice and smooth yet spicy Grey Goose Vodka,” Aspaas says. Housemade simple syrup is then added and the contents of the shaker are given a quick shake before being strained into a martini glass and garnished with a basil leaf. The result is a colorful creation with a burst of citrus and a smooth finish in every sip. Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar, 15205 N. Kierland Blvd., Scottsdale; 480.505.3668; www.tommybahama.com.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Branden Levine of Sel Restaurant

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Branden Levine is co-owner and executive chef of Sel Restaurant, an intimate restaurant offering progressive American cuisine.

How did you get your start? I got my first restaurant job – alongside my mom – at just 14. But I’d say my real start came during and immediately after my formal training in the culinary arts program at Johnson & Wales University. Upon graduating in 1997, I ventured to Kenya to launch a catering company with a friend and the rest is history. Tell us about your journey. After a year in Kenya, I worked steadily for a decade, including as executive sous chef at Charlie Palmer’s iconic Aureole in Las Vegas in the early 2000s. A major turning point came in 2004 when my mom, a lifelong waitress, asked me to buy a restaurant with her in Virginia, which we ran successfully until the market crash in 2008. How did you make your way to Arizona? After another trip to Africa to run a safari company’s expansive culinary program and taking time off to bartend, we visited my wife’s family out here in August 2012. We fell in love with Arizona and made it our home three months later. And then the Food Network came calling? Upon moving here, I took the executive chef position at Rio Verde Country Club. About the same time, the Food Network recruited me for Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell, where I took second place. Then, while working as executive chef of Café Monarch, I filmed Beat Bobby Flay in 2015. When it aired in 2016, my family and I invested in Sel and were weeks from opening. How did COVID-19 lead to changes at Sel? When our dining room was closed, we pivoted from our fixed-price offerings to a curbside menu of elevated comfort foods and veggies. Some items proved so popular that we are now offering two fixed-price menus – one of which is vegetarian – and a menu of upgraded takes on classic comfort dishes, including a wagyu burger and a lobster bun BLT. Crab + Mango Roll

Ling & Louie’s Asian Bar and Grill Refreshing with the perfect balance of sweetness and spice, this roll starts with kanikama, often called imitation crab meat for its crab-like texture and taste. So, grab some chopsticks and dig into these 10 rolls showcasing unique ingredients, fresh flavors, and beautiful presentation.

Sushi Roku Each bite of this signature roll explodes with spice and freshness and also brings together both Asian and Southwestern flavors in the most harmonious of ways. Sunshine Roll

Sushi Brokers Spicy, creamy and crunchy come together in this bright, citrus-forward dish. It starts with Sushi Brokers’ signature melt-in-yourmouth spicy krab (imitation crab), which is then mixed with silky cream cheese, crisp asparagus, refreshing cucumber, and small chunks of avocado. Once rolled with rice, it is finished with salmon and sliced lemon and then garnished with scallions and house ponzu sauce, which has the perfect balance of citrus and soy. $14.75. www.sushibrokers.com.

Crazy Monkey Roll

RA Sushi Bar & Restaurant Creative and crazy-good, this roll starts with smoked salmon, slices of mango, and cream cheese. Once rolled in rice, it’s topped with sliced avocado, red tempura bits, and sauteed cashews to give it a distinct nutty crunch one would not expect from a sushi roll. Before serving, it’s garnished with tropical mango and sweet eel sauces. $12.30. www.rasushi.com.

Sweet Mushroom Roll

the roll is garnished with a generous portion of seared spicy salmon, savory yet sweet eel sauce, sliced jalapenos, and Kasai’s secret ingredient: rich garlic butter made in-house. While big enough to share with your friends, you may very well want this roll all to yourself. $16. www.kasaiscottsdale.com.

Bei Sushi While there are nearly 30 specialty rolls with fillings from snow crab to baked salmon on this sushi spot’s menu, vegetarians will love that there is also a special section featuring an additional dozen rolls without seafood or meat. Among them is this earthy dazzler, which is filled with cucumber and avocado before being rolled with rice and topped with a teriyaki-glazed mushroom that has been sauteed. $6.95. www.beisushi.com.

Ahi Tuna Tataki

Nori Sushi & Asian Dining In Japanese, tataki refers to a cooking method where fish or other meat is seared on the outside yet still raw in the middle. This take on tataki starts by combining spicy tuna with earthy asparagus and cooling cucumber. After being rolled with rice, the dish is crowned with thinly sliced layers of tataki tuna and velvety avocado before being garnished with savory, crispy fried onions and a drizzle of Nori’s modern dressing, which is a sweet and citrusy soy-based onion blend. $15. www.noriaz.com.

Surf & Turf Roll

Toro Latin Restaurant & Rum Bar The best of both worlds come together in the tastiest way possible in this indulgent yet approachable dish, which starts with spicy lump crab meat (versus crab salad or imitation crab), tempura shrimp, and avocado. Once rolled with rice, pan-seared rare New York strip steak is placed on top. An infusion of Latin flavor follows, courtesy of truffle-infused chimichurri sauce and Brazilian-inspired churrasco aioli, which has both garlic and spice elements. $22. www.scottsdaleprincess.com.

End NEW IN TOWN

PIZZA PARTY

The acclaimed chef behind Virtù Honest Craft debuts authentic Neapolitan concept

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY DEBBY WOLVOS

In 2013, chef and restaurateur Gio Osso garnered acclaim when he opened Virtù Honest Craft at Old Town Scottsdale’s Bespoke Inn. There, Osso strived to compose each artfully crafted, often locally sourced dish into a symphony of sights, scents and tastes for guests. And it did not go unnoticed. Within a year, the progressive Mediterranean hot spot was named one of the best new restaurants in the U.S. by Esquire magazine and nominated as the best new restaurant in the country by the James Beard Foundation. Today, Virtù Honest Craft is among the most decorated and consistently delicious eateries in Arizona. But never one to rest on his laurels, Osso opened a sister concept, Pizzeria Virtù, earlier this year. Located just down the street from Virtù Honest Craft, Pizzeria Virtù is a celebration of Neapolitan pizza, or pizza Napoletana, which originated in Naples, Italy, and is known for its airy crust, raw tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and olive oil. A true Neapolitan pizza may only be made with San Marzano or Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio tomatoes from the volcanic plains of Mount Vesuvius, as well as

either di Bufala Campana or Fior di Latte di Agerola mozzarella – both also from Italy. Of Italian descent, this pizza is particularly close to his heart. In fact, Osso is a certified pizzaiolo by the Accademia della Pizza Napoletana – a denomination of control (DOC) established by the Italian government giving special designation to individuals who meet strict requirements that respect the tradition of Neapolitan pizza-making. The venue itself is also special to Osso. It inhabits a space that was occupied for the last two decades by a local pizzeria, and coincidentally, that pizzeria was the first restaurant Osso worked at when he moved to the area 17 years ago. Inside, fans of Osso will recognize direct inspiration from Virtù Honest Craft throughout, including the same custom-made copper bar top. An elegant color palette of black and white encapsulates the space, which includes indoor seating and an expansive, inviting patio. Pizzeria Virtù’s Neapolitan pizza offerings highlight both traditional preparations and local influences, with a focus on using seasonal ingredients from Osso’s longstanding relationships with farmers and purveyors in both Arizona and California. Expect everything from Calabrian chiles and pancetta to broccoli rabe and a chestnut honey drizzle on the pies. There are also small plates, salads and wood-fired vegetables. As with Virtù Honest Craft, the cocktail menu is a stunner. Look forward to Italian offerings like the Negroni as well as more out-of-the-box cocktails, many with Italian or Italian-inspired ingredients including amaro, vermouth and amaretto. There is also an impressive wine list by the bottle and glass, with a focus on Italian brands. Currently, only curbside pickup is available Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. Call or check online to verify opening hours and dine-in availability. 6952 E. Main St., Scottsdale; 480.663.9797; www.pizzeriavirtu.com.
