WOMEN’S HEALTH SottoPelle® answers your questions.
What does SottoPelle® offer? SottoPelle® offers a scientific method of natural bioidentical hormone therapy that cannot be achieved with mass-produced synthetics. SottoPelle® pioneered an innovative web-based BioCalc® system that provides each patient with a precisely dosed hormone pellet based on their individual needs and slipped under the skin for the maximum effectiveness. The SottoPelle® method eliminates the risks associated with most synthetic hormones. While often imitated but never duplicated, SottoPelle® remains the leader in pellet hormone therapy with its groundbreaking science and proprietary method that puts patients and their health first above everything else. Why would patients come to SottoPelle® over other places that offer similar treatments? Since 1992, Sottopelle® has been the only precision-based hormone therapy with an individualized approach. Most doctors prescribe hormones in tablets, patches, creams, gels or generic pellets. Unlike other methods, SottoPelle® is based on science and works with the body in a way the body recognizes. Other doctors who do pellet therapy do not use this proprietary system and give patients a one-size-fits-all generic dose of hormone that is less effective and can trigger unwanted side effects. Such imprecision may sometimes provide short-term relief of symptoms but does nothing to achieve the level of hormonal balance. The SottoPelle® method delivers on the long-term benefits everyone needs for healthy aging and to prevent disease.
Mom’s Deserve the Best! You spend so much time taking care of others, now it’s your time.

Understanding Hair Extensions LIMITED TIME OFFER
$350 OFF!
Your first Hair extension service
CALL NOW! (480) 663.8994 Jo Paris Salon & Spa stylists have a creative flare and passion for helping clients achieve looks they never thought they could have. The best part of their job is when they do hair extensions on someone for the first time., Its very rewarding. Sometimes their clients cry tears of joy and amazement, it can be very emotional. Without hair extensions, they would never be able to achieve the look they’ve always dreamed about having. they love being able to help someone reflect their inner beauty. Are hair extensions high maintenance? Once hair extensions are applied, your only responsibility is to brush your hair daily. Home care requires nothing special; extensions can actually be more low maintenance than most people think. Use of your everyday products, blow-driers and irons are perfectly fine. Three to six months is the average amount of time to wear these extensions before reapplying them, due to hair growth. Do hair extensions break your hair? Hair extensions can be great for your hair. With proper application and removal, clients find that their hair is actually growing, rather than breaking. Breakage comes either from the type of bond used or the individual who is applying them. A stylist’s patience is paramount when applying and removing extensions. That’s the potential for most breakage. The bond must be 100 percent keratin, a natural protein from which human hair is made of. Very few companies actually use keratin; many use glue or tape, which suffocates and breaks the hair.
SS_12_23IN_May16.indd 13
Do hair extensions look fake? Many stylists use synthetic hair, bulky wefts or strips, which look overly shiny and stiff like a wig. We use only 100% human hair, the best quality and takes longer to get, but lasts up to four years. All strands are small, individual pieces so they move freely, like your own hair. With the application technique they use, the extensions are extremely discrete. Blending is critical and strand placement is an artistic process that requires special training. Jo Paris stylists have received additional training to develop the cutting and blending techniques needed to achieve this natural overall look. Call for a complimentary consultation to see what style and length works best for you!

ed note
M
ay connotes many things. The start of increasingly hot temperatures. Cinco de Mayo festivities. Memorial Day gatherings. And, of course, a day totally focused on Mom. In fact, Mom – or, rather, moms – is where we put a lot of our focus in this issue. Our feature spotlights seven moms who are making a difference right here in the Valley through causes they are each fiercely passionate about. Read about these amazing women, starting on page 55. Keeping moms in mind, we’ve rounded up places to wine and dine the woman of the month (page 78), as well as spa treatments to help her relax (page 80). And what would a celebration be without a toast? There’s a beautiful way to give her the toast she so deserves on page 91. Speaking of toasting, Cinco de Mayo gives us good reason to spice things up with tequila-inspired cocktails (page 122) and a tantalizingly swirled margarita (page 88), as well as festive fare like ceviche (page 124) and short rib tacos (page 123). We also talked with two experts in their fields: Katie Schnurr, aka The Tequila Goddess, (page 36) and Modern Margarita’s chef, Judd Cummings (page 86). Beyond these culinary accounts, we venture into all things community-focused with our cover story on Tyler Butler (page 48). As GoDaddy’s director of corporate social responsibility and a community volunteer multiple times over, Butler has made it her life’s work to bring positive change everywhere she goes. Perhaps this month, as temperatures inevitably climb, you may find yourself in need of a pick-me-up (we won’t judge if it’s tequila-inspired!). But truly, the stories of the kind-hearted people in our community dedicated to making a difference always does serve as a pick-me-up in my eyes. I hope it does the same for you. And to all the moms out there, thank you for all you do!

who
contributors What’s your favorite way to spoil your mom on Mother’s Day? For my mom, everyday is Mother’s Day - she is so lucky to have my sister, brother and me as children! But seriously, we like to focus more on creating new memories than on gifts if possible – we learned that from our memory-making machine of a dad, who we lost in 2002. This year we are going big and treating her to Napa, Calif., for a wine adventure of a lifetime. Like I said, she is SO lucky to have us!
ALISON BAILIN BATZ Alison Bailin Batz began writing on all things food, drink and travel for So Scottsdale! by accident in 2008. She is an award-winning veteran of the PR industry and was recently named among the “Five Women to Watch under 35” by Arizona Business Magazine. She spends her spare time planning cruises, and is willing to taste anything for a story, with the exception of beer, chardonnay or mushrooms.
MARK MORGAN Originally from the East Coast, Mark Morgan shot for various magazines, modeling agencies and catalogs in New York, Philadelphia, Miami and New Mexico before moving to the Valley. His stock photography of fashion and dogs is represented by Vogue Italia and his work can be found at www.markmorganphotography.org. He maintains a studio in the up-and-coming Coronado neighborhood.
GRETCHEN PAHIA Gretchen Pahia brings nearly 15 years of experience in both media and public relations. As the owner of a local PR firm, Media by Connection, Pahia also enjoys spending time writing. She’s an award-winning television news producer in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Portland, Oregon. Pahia is native to Arizona, born and raised in Phoenix, where she still lives with her family.
Spine Surgery? Get a second opinion first. If you’ve been told you need spine surgery, you may want to consider a second opinion. It may reveal that you don’t need spine surgery at all.
If surgery is necessary, minimally invasive spine surgery techniques are available that may allow you to return home the same day, for a faster recovery and return to activity. Some patients may qualify for the latest advancement in artificial disc replacement. Learn more about your treatment options with our spine encyclopedia at SpineGroupArizona.com. You also can request our free Home Remedy Book and download our Back to Life Journal filled with information on advances in spine care. imberly Joy Lipson’s road has been a winding one. And it all started with a babysitting job. “Growing up, I babysat for the kids of Danny Manning, who was a member of the historic Phoenix Suns team from the early ’90s,” says Lipson, a Paradise Valley native and Chaparral High School athlete. “One great perk was taking his kids to games.” continued…

up close It was during a game that she saw Julie Fie from the Suns’ communications team in action, handling press on the court. “While I knew I wanted to work in sports, I didn’t necessarily want to be on the court as a competitor,” Lipson says. “So it seemed like a career in sports communications, like Fie, was the way to go.” Eager to get an early start, Lipson dove in after high school graduation, working for the University of Arizona’s Sports Information Department all four years of college. But, as graduation approached, she opted for the business route. “My family was made up primarily of entrepreneurs, especially my father, who owns the Carlos O’Brien’s Mexican Restaurants in the Valley,” Lipson says. “I thought a business degree was a safer bet than focusing just on sports.” Safer? Yes. A fit? No. “While I did help my family expand the brand, neither business nor finance, which I also tried my hand at, made me happy,” Lipson says. “So I went back to school to become a flight attendant.” Lipson excelled at the courses. So much so that she was to be stationed with a fellow classmate out of Newark Liberty International Airport – a major transportation hub – after graduation. That is, until fate intervened. “I started celebrating graduation a bit early and paid the price, getting kicked out of the program,” Lipson admits. One of her first flights was to have been United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001. “My classmate lost her life along with the other 43 heroes on that flight while thwarting the terrorists on board,” says Lipson, who would get far away from the air and instead ground herself in real estate, as well as a marriage, after that fateful day.
Next Steps While her real estate career flourished, however, her marriage did not. “Confused, I let my cousin Eva bring me to a yoga class at One Yoga. I had taken yoga before, but this time was different,” Lipson says. “Laying in Savasana, which is basically nap time at the end of class, my mind went clear.”
That was 2005. “Yoga let me finally hear my inner voice, but it took a while before I really listened to all it had to say,” says Lipson, who would follow that voice and get divorced in 2006. She continued in real estate for several years, often focusing on material goods for fulfillment. “At one point, I think I had 500 handbags and thought nothing of buying half a dozen Louboutins on a whim.” At the peak of her “Material Girl” days, fate again intervened in the form of her now-boyfriend, Julian Cain. “We locked eyes in 2009 – at Red Revolver Lounge in Scottsdale of all places – and there was just something about him,” says Lipson, who would again turn to yoga to sort out her feelings, finally listening to her inner voice in its entirety. Over the next several years, she would shed the handbags, lavish homes, cars and (most) of the Louboutins. Once she got certified to teach yoga, she even left the security of her real estate career. Lipson excelled at both practicing her new “sport” and teaching it. Eventually, on the behest of her dear friend and local TV personality, Katie Raml, she started chronicling her everevolving yoga practice via her Instagram page, @kjoylipson. “From standing on my head atop

Camelback Mountain to going into a full wheel pose while on an escalator, I was finally living my life out loud and proud,” says Lipson, whose Instagram outrageousness would catch the eye of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. “Out of nowhere, I got a call from casting directors late last year for a new, topsecret reality show wanting to cast me from Instagram. I thought it was a joke.’” Alas, it wasn’t. Last month, Lipson debuted as a competitor on FOX’s “American Grit,” a military-inspired reality competition hosted by WWE wrestler John Cena. “Set in the wilderness, I found myself competing for $1 million with some of the country’s toughest men and women and being led on the adventure of a lifetime.” And while she is sworn to secrecy on the outcome of the show, she is very vocal about its impact on her life. “I’ve come full circle as a person, as an athlete and as a competitor,” says Lipson, who still teaches yoga full time while supporting several yogi-related nonprofits including Off the Mat Into the World, which uses yoga as a way to empower others and inspire change. “Turns out, I was always meant to be in the thick of competition,” Lipson says. “I was supposed to be Danny Manning, not Julie Fie, after all.”

A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, stylist and color expert at Sachi Studios
Rodney Gentry is one of those people whose Midwestern charm and enthusiasm can’t help but rub off on you. And in his line of work, that’s certainly a plus. Gentry is possibly the Valley’s most adored hair stylist. His clients (some of them might better be described as fans) will happily travel across state lines in order to have him handle their tresses. Many of them simply trust nobody else with their hair. Having operated his own salon in Chicago before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry brings big city expertise to the Valley, which he combines with his own unique passion for styling and coloring at Sachi Studios. Each client enjoys a truly personalized service. Gentry considers the condition and history of the hair before recommending a treatment program, style and (if desired) color. His focus is on nurturing hair back to full health at the same time as providing stunning styles and fabulous colors. “It’s my goal to make each client feel truly beautiful – and to leave them with a style that they can easily recreate themselves every day,” he says. Part of this comes down to the right products. Gentry only uses the very best brands available, not skimping when it comes to choosing those products that will bring about dramatic improvements in the hair’s condition. This applies to everything, from daily

shampoos to the color treatments that he uses, which are enzyme-based rather than peroxide-based. This means they enhance the condition of the hair as well as give it a wonderfully vibrant color. Color is Gentry’s true passion. From full hair makeovers to the subtlest of highlights or lowlights, he works with his clients to select the colors that are right for their skin tone, the shape of their face and even their preferred color of clothing. “Every single person is unique in their coloring, which is why personalized consultation is so important,” he explains. “You really have to care about each and every client in order to bring out the best in their hair. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to beautiful hair!” Gentry also believes that it is important to stay abreast of trends. From the Oscars to the latest catwalk shows, he’s up to speed with seasonal styles and colors in order to enable each of his clients to achieve a touch of Hollywood glamour. From super straight blonde locks to superbly highlighted plaits with the tiniest of accessories woven in, Gentry is available to provide advice and guidance on how those in the Valley can look their very best this summer, both color-wise and style-wise. If you haven’t yet checked out Sachi Studios then you’re not giving your hair the love it deserves!
Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, AZ. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for further information.

SJÖGREN’S SURVIVOR
Chronic illness motivates this mom into medicine BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

hen Jennifer Mattox was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 10 years ago, it was just the start of her health journey. “Even when I was in remission, something didn’t feel right,” says the mother of two, who would continually fall ill with many seemingly unrelated symptoms. It wasn’t until 2009 when doctors uncovered the issue – and it wasn’t cancer. “I was diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome, a chronic condition where white blood cells attack the mucous membranes and moisture-secreting glands of the body,” Mattox says. “While researchers have yet to determine the cause or cure, treatment focuses on relieving symptoms.” Buoyed by finally having a diagnosis, Mattox began a proactive care regime, and this inspired her to action. “This brought me to Carrington College, where I got my medical assisting certificate. My goal is to work with a rheumatology group to help those living with Sjögren’s,” says Mattox, who graduated in late April. Mattox’s desire to help others extends outside of the doctor’s office, too. “At Carrington, we are empowered to help to make the community a better place. This spring, we delivered 520 homemade heart-shaped pillows with messages of hope and healing to Phoenix Children’s Hospital through our annual Heart Pillow Project.”
Etc.
How common is Sjögren’s? Four million people in the United States live with the condition. While some people experience mild discomfort, others suffer debilitating symptoms that greatly impair their functioning. Who does it affect? Since the disease was first identified in 1933 by Dr. Henrik Sjögren, it has been proven to affect virtually every racial and ethnic group. However, nine out of 10 people diagnosed are women. How are you locally involved in helping support Sjögren’s research and education? I am a passionate volunteer with the local Sjögren’s Syndrome Foundation. We recently held a walk-about event at Paradise Valley Mall, in fact, raising more than $12,000. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

THE TEQUILA GODDESS

Katie Schnurr educates guests about this flavorful spirit BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

f you’re at a loss when it comes to deciding what brand of tequila to try, Katie Schnurr (aka the Tequila Goddess), will point you in the right direction. “This is honestly the best job ever,” she says. “Getting paid to talk about tequila, mingling with our guests and educating so many people about this spirit? Sign me up!” Nestled within the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is Mexican eatery La Hacienda by Richard Sandoval. Here, you’ll find Schnurr behind the bar, where she has one of the largest tequila selections in the Valley at her disposal. Hence, her nickname. “Tequila is very similar to wine. The color, flavor, profile ... everyone has a different palate, so having the ‘Tequila Goddess’ or the ‘Tequilier’ on hand really helps our guests select the perfect sipping tequila.” Schnurr’s expansive knowledge in high-quality spirits comes from her 10-year background in the food and beverage industry. Schnurr has been immersed in all aspects of the industry, and she continues to build upon her preexisting knowledge. So, what does this goddess opt to drink herself? “If it’s a really hot day, a crisp and refreshing blanco tequila on the rocks with a slice of lime sounds amazing,” she says. “Other days, I might have a hankering to sip on a sweeter aged anejo neat.”
Etc.
Can you tell us a little about your charitable involvement at the Princess? We have so much involvement with the community. We have a green team to make sure we are doing our part to keep Arizona clean. During the holidays we work with Ryan’s House to help donate to the organization. Do you have regulars that often seek your tequila expertise? Absolutely! I love seeing my regulars who are always asking for my expertise. It’s so fun to reintroduce tequila the proper way to many people who have had that awful experience once upon a time with tequila. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I really enjoy being outside as much as possible! Whether it’s at the park with my two daughters, hiking or out at the pool. I also love doing unique little projects around the house – it’s a fun way to feed the soul. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

POLISHED AND PROFESSIONAL Momar Ba talks personal style influences
sense of style is something that comes pretty easily to clothing expert Momar Ba. Ba, who works as a personal stylist at Nordstrom, says he likes to keep his own style innovative and trendy. “Depending on the day, I normally start with the shoes and work from there,” he says. “I carefully select my suit or sports coat and coordinate.” For Ba, it isn’t just about the clothes either; his style is also accessorized appropriately. “Complementary fragrances are important. For me, those are Tom Ford, Hermes and fragrances by Creed.” When not working, Ba’s professional style still blends into his everyday personal style. “I’m known to be seen after hours wearing my daytime professional attire. However, when I’m not, I prefer a more casual look that includes some of my favorite designers such as Zachary Prell, Gucci, Hugo Boss and Armani, just to name a few.” Friends and family would rarely catch Ba out of style. However, they may be surprised to find that he does still hold on to some traditional clothing from his homeland. “Being born in Senegal, West Africa, you’d find some African attire called boubou [a classic Senegalese robe] in my closet.”

With an emphasis on all things chic, CRUSH (www.shopcrushaz.com) specializes in high-quality womenswear, with a focus on the latest fashion trends spanning unique bohemian and rockerchic styles interspersed with swimwear, jewelry and stylish activewear. “Owning CRUSH has given me a creative outlet to express my inspirations, style and love of everything cool.” CRUSH pays tribute to Holm’s playful and carefully curated style. “I have definitely stepped outside of my comfort zone since opening CRUSH. It’s not about how much you spend. It’s about the ‘mix’ and combining textures and colors with the new and the old. Style is what one creates with these,” she explains. As a busy mom of two beautiful girls, Sophia and Chloe, Holm opts for comfort without compromising cuteness. “If it’s not comfortable, I won’t wear it,” she admits. Thanks to Holm’s tasteful eye and admiration for others’ style – she says Rocky Barnes is her ultimate idea of a trendsetter – CRUSH gives Valley women the opportunity to make fashion statements just as crush-worthy as Holm’s personal style.

Previously, she was a community lead at Microsoft, and before that, worked in the nonprofit world. “I have always been involved in community-related organizations, even as a child,” she says. “Since my time working in nonprofit, I have seen the positive difference people can collectively make when dedicated to a cause, and it has inspired me to continue pushing forward in being of service.” At GoDaddy, Butler focuses on showcasing the philanthropic aspect of what the GoDaddy brand does each day, not only with their employees but also with their customers. “One of the campaigns that I spend time focusing on is something called Round Up,” Butler says. “When customers buy a product from us, we ask if they want to round up their cents to the nearest dollar, and that change helps donate funds to our key partners, showcasing our commitment to those partners. Just that simple change really adds up, and we raise millions of dollars through that program.” Butler’s work at GoDaddy isn’t her only commitment to the community, though. She is actively involved in many other philanthropic organizations that help the Valley, from its youth to impacting the business environment. Among one of the organizations Butler serves on, or is a board member of, is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, which she says has been one of her greatest experiences. “I love working with the programs for this group, interacting with the youth and helping them find useful skills. It is through this opportunity that I get handson experience in seeing how the group work benefits the children of our community and how it can help our community grow leaps and bounds.” Butler is also president of a local corporate volunteer organization, Central Arizona Corporate Volunteer Council. This organization brings together a variety of corporations that provide volunteers for a
number of different roles Valley-wide. “This group allows us to be a think tank of sorts,” Butler says. “We share knowledge and share practices, and it’s pretty amazing. This group allows us to come together as like-minded individuals with very specific goals in mind.” It’s evident that volunteerism is a big part of where Butler puts her focus and her heart. She currently serves as a commissioner on the Arizona Governor Service and Volunteerism Board, which provides oversight on volunteer efforts for the state. She is also part of the Board of Trustees for the Arizona Science Center, another youth-related endeavor. “We are really looking to help provide greater engagement for guests and science center goers through the new CREATE space,” Butler adds. “As an advocate for the community, I have a responsibility to help our Valley community grow, and committing to projects such as these are just a small way I feel I can help.” There are other projects and boards which Butler is either a member or an advisor for – almost too many to name. Her charity work on advisory panels, fundraisers and community outreach projects are second nature for Butler, who has made community involvement her life’s work.
For the Greater Good Many may wonder how she takes on so many projects and initiatives. To that, Butler says, “Right now, I’ve got the bandwidth to be extremely active at this point in my life. My commitments are things I am able to make work and be a part of. Some of them are quarterly board meetings, some of them are monthly. Since I am already working on many of them in the community, it seems to come naturally to me.” In fact, Butler grew up always being on the move, quite literally. “I grew up in a nomadic environment as my family owned and operated a government construction company. So every year or two we would embark on a new adventure in a new place,” she says. “I attribute my ability to

adapt and assimilate to different situations to my upbringing, as change was the only constant.” Today, at the heart of Butler’s involvement is an inherent desire to making a difference in the community and helping make a change for the greater good. “I always say now that my position at GoDaddy is not a job or a career, and that my work in the community is more than volunteerism,” Butler says. “Collectively, this is my life’s work – to be a proponent for positive change.” She adds that doing philanthropic work is truly what adds purpose to her daily life. Working with all of these different groups gives her a way to feel fulfilled and engaged in so many ways. “I think [my community work] brings a lot of color to my life, helps me build relationships that are meaningful and allows me to see the community grow in exciting ways. It’s important to me that I fill my schedule with things that help me make a positive change in the world.” Although, it isn’t all work and no play. “I try to fill every single moment as much as I possibly can, but I do keep things fun as well,” she says. Likewise, Butler also keeps things fashionable. Over the past two years, she has been named one of Arizona Foothills “Most Fashionable Women Over 30.” “It is a great honor, and it’s a fun one as well. I enjoy dressing up and showing my style when I am out and about town. The more you get out, the more you get recognized as you grow you network.” Butler’s passion for the community is clear – and so is her focus on family. “My mom lives in Gilbert and my bother in Tucson. I’m very engaged with them, so I’m not going anywhere!” Butler says. When she’s not working or giving her time, the kind-hearted role model also enjoys spending time in the Valley with friends enjoying new restaurants, going to sports games, hiking and, simply put, being a Phoenician. “I love being here, the Valley organizations and my role to making corporate contributions. This is where I live, and this is definitely my home.”

Love after
Online
Dating s a freelance travel journalist, my articles have varied in content ranging from the turmoil in Afghanistan to Berlin restaurant openings and everything in between. My one hard and fast rule? Never write about myself. Apparently all rules were meant to be broken. When I divorced 5 years ago, at first it seemed exciting - a new beginning, a second chance at love. I tend to be a true romantic, and although proudly, more practical than Danielle Steele, my heart longed to flutter. My husband and I had a comfortable relationship, which turned into more of a friendship as the years droned – I mean went on. I loved the constant adventure of change and he loved the constant anything - my steady Eddie. (Don’t worry – he’s my proof reader to this day and he won’t be insulted, ‘cause it’s all true!) We were fortunate enough to split amicably and remain the greatest of friends to this day, right Eddie? I began my new life with gusto unaware that my enthusiasm was about to flat line. Through my work I met a gentleman who shared with me the world of online dating. He claimed to have had terrific results and showed me some of his correspondence as proof. You’d think the fact that he was getting these terrific results even though he was paunchy, deeply entrenched in the late 1980’s, and had chronic halitosis, would have been a red flag, but oh no. I figured, well if he’s doing well, I should be just fine! (Don’t worry he won’t be insulted, cause it’s all true! Not to mention the fact that he has since moved to Ohio.) So there I went. It was weird, uncomfortable, intrusive, offensive, and weird. Did I say weird twice? Definitely weird. All of me broken down to a paragraph along with the only pseudo recent photo of myself standing next to my daughter - sans daughter – I cropped her out. (She already had a boyfriend and I didn’t need the competition.) Then I ran across Mr. Paunchy Halitosis’ online profile. I knew it was him only by his screen name, “ Meyoursladies”. I wouldn’t have recognized him by his photo, since it wasn’t his - at least not from this decade. He was trim and handsome and even by the photo I could tell his breath was minty fresh. What crap! This is what I had to look forward to? I had already had enough. I’m sorry but just because your photo is a photo of you, if
SS_52_53Ads_May16.indd 52
it wasn’t taken within the last couple of years it doesn’t count. (I wish I could be 45 and still look the exact same as I did at 29) A girlfriend of mine had warned me of the misinformation, the wasted time, and the disappointment. I didn’t listen hard enough. I guess I needed to see it for myself. Done. Now what? I decided to up the ante and look into a real dating service. As any good journalist would, I began to do some research. That’s when I came across Phoenix Singles. A service that not only offers matchmaking services but events for the members. This was my turn to have fun, meet someone fantastic and live happily ever after, and those expectations were great. I called them up and spoke with Jennifer. She was really sweet and put me at ease almost immediately. She explained that they were particular about their membership and that I would need to come in for an appointment. I liked that too. I didn’t want to have to weed through the schmucks, so why not let someone else do it? I set up an interview and liked my first impression. Professional office in Scottsdale, check. Warm, personable staff, check. Amazing coffee, check. So far, so good.
50+ years of experience, an A+ rating with the B.B.B, and countless success stories as a result of their efforts, it’s no wonder Phoenix Singles is the #1 Dating Service in the entire State of Arizona.

Marcia and Ed, Happy Phoenix Singles Success Story prove it’s never too late to find love.
After speaking with the Center Director, Tammy, I learned a great deal about the company. They told me that they would take care of me, to hold my hand through every step, and although they would make recommendations of men I might like to meet, I would have the final say. Because they did an extensive photo shoot, there wouldn’t be any blind dating or 10 year old photos of shirtless men standing in front of their Camaros. I could live with that. I may not be a “10” myself, but I take good care of myself and am a solid 7 1/2 for my years, (48 of them) and wanted the same. They did background checks! Loved that! No games, just straightforward professionals looking for an actual, real relationship. I have to admit, my expectations were growing and I thought it might just be too good to be true. The programs were pricier than online sure, but I took the plunge trusting Tammy and her team. What the heck, you only live once, right? So there I went. It felt a little like jumping off a cliff. I surprised myself by being a nervous wreck for the photo shoot. This confident 7 1/2 felt like a shaky teenage 4. What had I done? Why don’t I just go to a bar and take my chances? Then came Carmen, the photographer. Thank God. I needed someone to make me laugh and put me at ease, she delivered the goods, just like they told me she would. Not only did I feel relaxed, but the photos were good. Really good. I would totally date me! With the tough stuff out of the way, I quickly realized behind the tough stuff was more tough stuff, actually going out on dates. Once again, the staff came to my rescue and Tammy had recommendations of men waiting for me. She told me about these men and why they would be great for me and then asked me what I thought. Nice. I didn’t want someone to tell me what I needed and match me up with my Uncle George. (Uncle George was a very nice man, but Clooney, he wasn’t.) I was happy with her choices for me and could see her 14 years
SS_52_53Ads_May16.indd 53
of experience shining through. We decided on two of them. Tammy had her Membership Services team, Lynea and Kristin, call them on the spot. Because of the world of digital magic, they were able to look up my information immediately. Bing, bang, boom – I had a date later that night. Yikes, an actual date! His name was Ken and what a great guy. And normal. And he looked just like his photos! Although there was no love connection, I soon became comfortable in my new dating life. My seventh date was with a man named John. Now we were talking! After four dates we “froze” our Phoenix Singles memberships and after six months, we knew this was it. I had met the man of my dreams and the adventure had begun. I knew I loved being in a relationship. I knew I wanted to find my person, the one I could count on no matter what – the one who adored me as much as I adored him, someone I could respect and admire, who viewed life the same way I did. I knew I had great expectations for my future. I just don’t think I believed it could be this good. John and I were married last year. So here’s to you, Phoenix Singles. You made me break my rule and write about myself. You exceeded my own great expectations – so to anyone who’ll listen …give ‘em a shot. Your happily ever after could be right around the corner. And don’t worry, they won’t be offended ‘cause it’s all true!

NICOLE STANTON
Founder and chair, Dion Initiative for Child Well-Being and Bullying Prevention
A
s office managing partner of Quarles & Brady LLP and Quarles’ assistant general counsel, Nicole Stanton is naturally a very justice-driven person, so when she saw her late brother Dion France being bullied relentlessly as a child, she knew something had to be done. In 2012, Stanton launched Stop Bullying AZ. The organization sponsored an anti-bullying summit at Arizona State University that year, providing school administrators and teachers with information and strategies to help stop bullying in schools. After receiving tremendous support, Stop Bullying AZ was renamed the Dion Initiative for Child Well-Being and Bullying Prevention (www.dioninitiative. org) and is now located within ASU as a research and resource program. Tell us about the Dion Initiative. We are committed to promoting environments that foster the health, well-being and academic success of children. To accomplish this, the Dion Initiative brings together renowned educators, dedicated direct-service providers and innovators to create a greater understanding of the obstacles children face and to develop and share evidenced-based and easily replicable programs that overcome those obstacles. Multiple projects comprise the Dion Initiative, including providing training for educators to improve school climate, improving the health and well-being of our community’s most at-risk children, and making cyberspace safer.
You are involved in the LGBTQ community. Why is this cause so significant to you? I believe in equality. My brother was gay, and I personally witnessed the hate and violence that was directed at him because of his sexual orientation. I want to prevent that from happening to others and assist others who have been similarly mistreated. My brother and his memory are always with me and fueled me to found this organization as well as speak up for the LGBTQ community, especially the youth within it, in any way that I can. How do you balance your community work with your family? I try to dispel the notion for other women that there is such a thing as balance. If it exists, it is an elusive creature. often very out of balance. From week to week I have to make difficult decisions about the priorities in my life. On the community front, I have started more and more to try to involve my children in my activities. My children are my priority and everything else has to take a backseat. What would you like to be remembered for? For being the type of leader that creates more leaders, not more followers. How do you plan on teaching your children philanthropy? I think the best way to teach my children how to give back is to teach by example. As they get older, they will get to experience more and more of our family's commitment to the community. It is something that will be unquestionably second nature to them.

SUNNY WIGHT Founder and executive director, Mindfulness First
A
fter suffering a stress-induced breakdown, Sunny Wight created the nonprofit Mindfulness First (www.mindfulnessfirst.org). Since then, through mindfulness practices, Wight has healed herself and made it her mission to share these healing practices with others. Mindfulness First educates and empowers through mindfulness-based life skills that increase awareness, resilience, kindness, connection and creativity. The organization is creating Arizona’s first Mindful School at Phoenix’s Crockett Elementary School, and there is a community center in Scottsdale where anyone can learn mindfulness. Ultimately, Wight is committed to creating a more peaceful world. Why is this cause important? I believe that mindfulness is the cause to end all causes. If we could teach our children how to manage their emotions and impulses, then we are just a generation away from a more compassionate and peaceful world. Through mindfulness, people can have a shared knowledge of the human experience. It is my firm belief, that once we all learn how to manage our bodies through mindfulness, we would have a very different society. What would you like people to know about Mindfulness First? Mindfulness First is for all people whatever their age. The life skills we teach are based on universal biological and neurological facts. And so, simply by default of being a human, mindfulness lessons
can transform your life. We all have an automatic stress reaction that kicks in no matter the source of stress. When we experience the stress reaction time after time throughout our daily activities, then we are never resting and healing our body. Through mindfulness, we can take control of this automatic reaction, and begin to take care of our body and mind. Mindfulness First wants to create a healthy Arizona by giving people their “user manual” (a phrase we often use to describe mindfulness lessons). Have you always been involved in the community? No. Before my breakdown I rarely volunteered; I was so caught up in my own life for the wrong reasons. After my personal transformation I began honoring my true self instead MAY 2016 |

of trying to conform to who I thought I should be, and that gave me a great capacity and desire to give back not only to my family but to my community in a tremendous and impactful way. What has been your greatest success? My greatest success story is my children. I couldn’t be more enamored with the way their independent minds work and how they know who they are at ages 10 and 12. Both are already following the dreams that they have for themselves, and I could not be more proud. How do you plan on teaching your children about philanthropy? It’s a part of their everyday life; they are both very involved in what I do. I hope that it is clear to them that helping others is a part of living a rewarding life.

GENEVRA RICHARDSON
Board of Trustees Chair, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Arizona Chapter
G
enevra Richardson is the owner of GovGroup (www.govgroup.com), a company specializing in contract lobbying. Her job is to work with people from both sides of the aisle to find solutions. This idea of solving problems also segues into her philanthropic life as she serves as the chair of the Board of Trustees for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), Arizona Chapter – with the mission to raise money to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Richardson has been involved with LLS (www.lls. org) for 11 years and joined the board six years ago, currently in her second year as chair. She has since helped grow the board to a very active group of 18 members who are making great strides for LLS. What inspired you to get involved with LLS? I am so passionate about LLS. It’s where I want to spend my time because I have so many personal connections that have been impacted by blood cancers. My high school friend, Cameron Clay, was diagnosed with leukemia right after we graduated. And my husband lost his older brother, Mark, to leukemia when he was just a toddler. What new things are in store for LLS this year? We have our two biggest campaigns coming up this year that are like no other in the community. Our fourth annual Man and Woman of the
Year campaign is a 10-week fundraising campaign, and we are in the middle of the campaign right now. We have 17 fabulous candidates running for the title, and our finale is on June 11 at Talking Stick Resort. Our Light the Night Walk is in the fall and it honors survivors, those who have passed and their families. It will be Nov. 5 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Have you always been involved in the community? Our close friends, Katie and Mark Cosmas, lost their daughter, Taylor, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and founded an organization called Three Butterflies. Each year they have a 5K race in Arcadia called Team Taylor. This is where I donate my extra time and resources – to their race to benefit research for SIDS. I am SO SCOTTSDALE! |

passionate about getting involved in all of the local foundations that directly impact our local communities. I’ve always said to my friends, if the organization is important to you, then it’s important to me. What has been your greatest success? My greatest success has been my family – my husband Jeff and having my children, Beau and Reese. I think every mother probably says that, but I am so proud of my kids. They put everything into perspective. Why do you think it is important for everyone to give back in some way? It’s always important to give back. It’s so rewarding, and we are so lucky to have health and family. Imagine if we were all involved in some way what a better world this would be!

DIANA DIAZ-HARRISON
Founder and executive director, Arizona Autism Charter Schools, Inc.
A
fter Diana Diaz-Harrison’s son, Sammy, was diagnosed with autism at age 2 1/2, Diaz-Harrison immersed herself in every parent training program she could find. But, when Sammy got to be school-age, Diaz-Harrison found that it was a struggle to find a public school program that would meet his needs. That is when she took to matters into her own hands. After years of research and banding together with others who shared her vision, she founded a nonprofit in 2012 with the sole purpose of starting a charter school focused on the learning needs of children with autism – and the first location of the Arizona Autism Charter School (AZACS; www.autismcharter.org) opened in 2014. Tell us about AZACS. AZACS is Arizona’s first tuition-free public charter school focused on children with autism. We use Applied Behavior Analysis strategies to help children overcome behavior and communication deficits associated with autism. We opened our school in 2014, serving 90 students in grades K-5. We’re currently in our second year of operation, and we’re getting ready to open a second campus next fall to serve middle school students. Why do you do what you do? I do what I do because there is a shortage of quality school choices for children with autism. There are very few schools using evidence-based strategies delivered by highly trained teachers and staff. It is such a relief for parents to know their
children are in a school that understands their needs and has the programs to move them forward in their skills. Seeing the children make progress is the most rewarding thing in the world. Why is this cause so important? One in 64 Arizona children are living with autism. If left untreated, children can have lifelong difficulties communicating and participating in the social world. I believe that with the proper therapies and education, children with autism can participate with their families and communities and become productive citizens. What would you like to be remembered for? I’d like to be remembered for being a great mom and for making a difference for families living with autism in honor of my son. MAY 2016 |

How do you plan on teaching your children about philanthropy? Giving back and being a part of the solution is our lifestyle. When I struggled to find the educational resources I needed for my son, we decided to build something to benefit him and other children. Building our school has been a family affair that will give back to our community for many years to come. Why do you think it is important for everyone to give back in some way? We are all faced with adversity at some point in our lives. Whether it’s a child with a diagnosis, a sick parent or the loss of something near and dear to our heart. Instead of giving up in these situations, it is much more empowering to take that life experience to help others.

LISA STROHMAN Founder and director, Technology Wellness Center
A
few years ago, psychologist Lisa Strohman began to notice that her clients were experiencing interpersonal conflict related to the increasing use of social media and exposure to technology. As a result, they were losing touch with living in the present, so she started the Technology Wellness Center (www.technologywellnesscenter.com) to address the issues that children and families face in regards to 24/7 online access. The organization offers parents guidance, support and resources to help manage technology-related issues. Strohman’s goal is to create awareness regarding the prevalence of technology in children’s lives – and provide tools for parenting during a digital age. Why do you do what you do? I am motivated to continue to dedicate my time, resources and heart to an issue that I see impacting so many people every day. I am naturally an empathic person – I can feel that the nature of people and how they connect is deteriorating. I do a lot of work with schools and organizations bringing awareness to this issue and I work with kids and parents. Making a difference, even one person at a time, makes all of the work that I do worthwhile. Why is this cause so important? Technology wellness, with a focus on the positive aspects that technology can provide when it is used with balance, structure and understanding, is so important to learn. Parents need to recognize that
children can succumb to the addictive programming that gaming platforms and social media create, which prey upon our need for acceptance and love. What would you like to be remembered for? I would like to be remembered as someone that passionately and soulfully cared about children and our community. That I did everything I could to help families keep their kids safe and to better understand the importance of developing interpersonal skills away from a screen or device. Would you share a favorite memory about one of your children? One of my favorite moments was when my very smart and witty daughter reminded me of what is really important. One day I was racing to send an email that I was certain SO SCOTTSDALE! |

was late, and she was trying to show me something she had learned at school. I asked her to wait until I was done, but she would not give up. Finally, she said, “Mom, is that email more important than me?” Hearing her words was a great reminder of the lessons I try to teach – it warmed my heart to hear this. How do you plan on teaching your children about philanthropy? We try to instill in our children the importance of getting involved in community events that provide opportunities to give to others. We encourage them to each pick one cause where they can donate their time or participate in some way, and then we also pick an organization or event to adopt as a family. We want our kids to learn empathy and compassion.

STACEY BECK Founder, PITCH 4 KIDZ
M
aking a difference in the lives of children affected by substance abuse led Stacey Beck, the wife of former MLB pitcher Rod Beck, to create PITCH 4 KIDZ (www.pitch4kidz.org). After her family’s own experience losing Rod to addiction, Beck saw an opportunity to help children navigate the emotional impact of living with a parent battling substance abuse. Thus, PITCH 4 KIDZ was born. The organization seeks to give children a voice in recovery while providing tools to make positive choices, learn effective communication, build self-esteem and have healthy emotional expression. What inspired you to start PITCH 4 KIDZ? It was a way to fulfill a promise to my daughters after the loss of their father. They attended a children’s program in California when their dad was in treatment, where they acquired skills to help them navigate the rollercoaster ride that is addiction. There was no program like it in Arizona, so on the third anniversary of Rod’s death, we launched PITCH 4 KIDZ. What would you like people to know about PITCH 4 KIDZ? PITCH offers fun, developmentally appropriate programs that provide children with education and various forms of emotional expression. They learn a language in which to communicate their experiences and understand that they are not responsible for their parent’s disease. This is a critical message for children in building self-esteem and coping strategies.
Why is this cause so important? The children in our community affected by family addiction are often overlooked, unseen and lack access to positive resources. As a community we do not talk honestly about this topic. Pervasive stigma and judgment results in families keeping secrets and children struggling alone. True prevention is available, but not valued and not well funded. Have you always been involved in the community? I was raised that it is my responsibility to do something to repair the world. This has manifested in several ways for me. I began working with Rod and the San Francisco Giants over 30 years ago to help those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. We created the annual event, Until There’s a Cure Day, which MAY 2016 |

was the first time a professional sports team addressed such a stigmatized issue. During his years in the MLB we continued to raise money and awareness. What has been your greatest success? Raising two incredibly good people. Every day I see Rod’s spirit in my daughters. Their kindness and perseverance are extraordinary. They have overcome great challenges and through all of it they are able to advocate for others. They understand the importance of giving to their community and have an unwavering dedication to friends and family. What would you like to be remembered for? That I, very imperfectly, tried to make a small part of the world a little better and that I loved my family with every ounce of my being.

fter the loss of her daughter, Ava, to cancer, Chrisie Funari felt called to help other families who were experiencing the same agony she and her family did during Ava’s fight for her life. When Ava was diagnosed, Funari traveled throughout the country seeking the best treatment for her daughter so she understood firsthand the struggles faced by families of children with cancer. With that deep understanding, Funari began the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (www.azcancerfoundation.org) with a mission to offer unique programs that help facilitate travel – regardless of financial situation – to children with cancer and their families. While Funari’s ultimate goal is to end pediatric cancer, she is equally committed to giving children and their caregivers greater peace of mind. Why do you do what you do? I want to offer families no regrets. When Ava was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of pediatric cancer, the survival rate was 40 percent. I knew we only had one shot at beating the disease. We traveled extensively throughout the United States seeking the best treatments. I had done everything in my power to save Ava’s life by leaving no stone unturned. I want to offer families a similar opportunity: To leave no stone unturned and no regrets. The foundation assists with travel expenses so families can get the best treatment for their child.
Why is this cause so important to you? Giving a voice to children with cancer is my life. After enduring the heart-wrenching loss of my daughter, this line of work is the only thing I know. I have to do it, and this role is a true honor and privilege. What would you like to be remembered for? Ava’s legacy. My dedication and commitment to children with cancer comes from my love for her. The children are inspired to keep Ava’s spirit alive while helping children with cancer in our community. Why do you think it is important for everyone to give back in some way? Life is short, and we are all in this world together. We all have a story or experience that has affected us, and giving back allows you to connect with the community or continue the legacy of a lost loved one. Donating your time, expertise or money is an amazing opportunity, a fulfilling experience and a great help for the cause you support.

The Valley’s newest ice cream shop, Creamistry, recently opened at the Scottsdale Waterfront. This Californiabased creamery does things a little differently, too. Customers choose a size or specialty (ranging from shakes to waffle bowls), then they select an ice cream base (including premium, organic, Greek yogurt, non-dairy, vegan and gluten-free options), and finally choose from nearly 40 flavors plus tasty toppings. Everything is mixed with liquid nitrogen right before your eyes, resulting in made-to-order ice cream that’s both fresh and indulgently satisfying. From May 9 to 12, buy one, get one free and on May 14, Creamistry will give away free single scoops. Another Scottsdale location at Scottsdale Quarter is soon to follow! www.creamistry.com.

Sanctuary Spa Ranked by Travel + Leisure as one of the top five hotel spas in the continental United States, the Sanctuary Spa is set among serene desert surroundings in the shadow of Camelback Mountain. While the spa offers a variety of massage therapies, body treatments and Asian-inspired services (such as Reiki), a feminine, perfect-for-spring treatment is the Citrus Lavender Softening Scrub. Using nourishing sea minerals in combination with lavender’s healing properties and the aroma of citrus, this full-body exfoliation leaves skin smooth and silky. The scrub is followed by a relaxing massage. $165-$245 depending on length and day. www.sanctuaryoncamelback.com. VH Spa Head to VH Spa at the retro-hip Hotel Valley Ho for a choice of two services, or splurge for both. The 90-minute Mother’s Little Helper Facial caters to Mom’s skin type using a customized masque, with a focus of bringing out her natural glow while counteracting the effects of aging. The Spring Again aromatherapy massage is ideal for moms who need to de-stress (and who doesn’t?). This customized 90-minute treatment features delicate notes of spring, using Lotus Wei’s floral essences to focus on harnessing energy, joy, peace or love. Both specials are available May 1-8 and include a glass of wine or bubbly plus access to the hotel’s two pools. Both services are $99 plus a service charge and gratuity. www.hotelvalleyho.com.

DINE AROUND TOWN How to eat your way through Arizona Restaurant Week like a pro
Pick a Prix Fixe That Fits Each restaurant offers a prix fixe menu – usually three to four courses with traditional, vegetarian and even gluten-free options – but there are two price points: $33 or $44. If you’re looking for a tasty $33 option, try SumoMaya Mexican-Asian Kitchen, which was recently one of only two restaurants in the Valley that made it onto OpenTable’s list of “100 Hottest Restaurants in America for 2016.” With their menu, you can have the best of both worlds as they are offering a more Asian-inspired option alongside a highend Mexican menu. Highlights include baconwrapped dates, ceviche of the day, street corn, sushi rolls and street-style tacos. For a $44 option, look no further than Binkley’s. Since James Beard darling Kevin Binkley will be closing this flagship location sometime this summer as he reimagines his Bink’s Midtown space to take over as the flagship in the fall, this will be Binkley’s – as we know it today – last Arizona Restaurant Week menu. And they are going out with a bang, offering fried okra with ranch foam, teriyaki eggplant with pickled Fresno chili, apricot bomb with anise oil, slow-cooked, whey-fed pork, and about a dozen other courses and amuses you won’t soon forget.

Take Note of Newbies After more than a decade, every restaurant that is part of the event already signed on years ago, right? Wrong! Each year, at least a dozen venues sign on for their inaugural chance at wowing the Valley. This year, there are several newbies of note to consider. La Bocca Urban Kitchen & Wine Bar: The cozy, High Street wine bar that brings together Mediterranean and Italian ingredients will offer everything from freshly made pastas and creamy hummus to savory seasonal bruschetta and made-from-scratch pizzas. Inde Fusion Restaurant and Lounge: Recently opened in Gainey Ranch, Inde Fusion focuses on marrying the rich flavors, sauces and spices of the Far East with American favorites like tacos, shrimp and grits, and baby back ribs. Their Arizona Restaurant Week menu includes crispy falafels, Thai noodles, pumpkin nut ravioli and even an Indian-infused twist on creme brulee. Restaurants fill up quickly, so reservations are recommended. For all the dining details, visit www.arizonarestaurantweek.com.

or the last four years, SMoCA Mix has delighted supporters with a fabulous fundraiser at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA). On Saturday, May 7, the museum will be animated by live entertainment and a runway stretching throughout the entire museum in honor of SMoCA Mix: Fashionably Avant-Garde. This fashionably avant-garde concept explores the connection between contemporary art and conceptual couture with fashion from innovative local and international designers. Be sure to dress in your very best black-tie, avant-garde attire in
themed colors of gold, silver, black, white and red. In addition to iconic garments seen in pop culture as well as those created exclusively for the event, the evening promises dazzling runway shows, gorgeous models and unforgettable art, all starting at 6 p.m. SMoCA Mix 2016 co-chairs Tracy Serena and Christian Serena (who is also an advisory board member) bring a fresh perspective to the year’s event, which helps support SMoCA’s mission. “We’re thrilled to be the chairs of SMoCA Mix and to show a broad

audience why the museum is so unique and dynamic,” says Christian Serena. “The Fashionably Avant-Garde evening will truly be a one-of-a-kind event that the Valley has never experienced before!” Rocky Gathercole, of Los Angelesbased fashion house For the Stars, will showcase a custom dress Katy Perry wore for her Super Bowl XLIX halftime show performance in Arizona along with 20 garments designed exclusively for SMoCA Mix inspired by the architecture of the museum itself. Additionally, one of the Valley’s own couturiers, Galina Mihaleva, will present her Galina Couture collection of custom gowns and performance art costumes, which blend contemporary technology and high fashion. “SMoCA is a young, vibrant and essential part of the dynamic art scene in Arizona,” says SMoCA Director and Chief Curator Sara Cochran. “We do things differently. This event is part of that – extraordinary visual displays, astonishing performances and uncommon foods. Join us and be part of the fun!” Individual tickets are $250 and can be purchased online. cuisine Modern Margarita is more than margaritas (although those are quite tasty!). The restaurant dishes out gourmet street tacos and a variety of delicious dips and bites, all under the helm of Judd Cummings, chef and director of kitchen operations. GROWING UP, WERE YOU ALWAYS FOCUSED ON A FUTURE IN FOOD? While I did grow up helping my mom make dinner every night, I was more focused on sports, playing rugby, lacrosse and even competing on my school’s ski team back in New York. In fact, I played Division 1 lacrosse while in college, where I studied political science. And while I worked in several kitchens during school, even running one at one point, once I graduated I took a very different road, to say the least. I chose to enter the military, joining just after September 11, 2001 and serving until 2011, including tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. HOW DID YOU MAKE THE MOVE TO FOOD? Once I completed my service, I was ready for a drastic change. I applied and was accepted to the French Culinary Institute (now the International Culinary Institute) in New York City. While there, I was able to complete an externship at the iconic Le Cirque, and eventually worked at Mario Batali’s Babbo, then Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, where I spent several memorable years growing the brand throughout the Northeast. WHAT LED YOU TO ARIZONA AND MODERN MARGARITA? Believe it or not – a whim! When I heard a friend was coming to the Valley to check out the growing culinary scene, I hopped in my car and drove the 2,500 miles here to see it for myself. What can I say? The food revolution in Arizona impressed me, and I wanted to be a part of it. I joined Modern Margarita and its family of restaurants late last year. WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN STORE FOR MODERN AS YOU MAKE THE MENU YOUR OWN? By this summer, expect some more sustainable ingredients, some quirkier menu spotlights and maybe even a little more seafood, one of my favorite proteins to experiment with for my guests. WHAT WOULD OUR READERS BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? Though I might not look it, I am an avid gardener. Right now, I have thyme, basil, sage, mint, tarragon, oregano, pepper, tomatoes and more growing in my backyard. That’s a huge reason we want to use more sustainable and local ingredients in our menu items when we can; many of us are already doing so in our own homes.

I’M YOUR HUCKLEBERRY Roaring Fork’s unique twist on the margarita BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
R
oaring Fork, known for its roasting and grilling techniques, has been a Valley staple for more than 20 years. Yet a special menu item pre-dates the venue itself: the Huckleberry Frozen Margarita ($7.50). “The original cocktail recipe was the brainchild of co-founders Guy Villavaso and Larry Foles, who helped launch other brands such as Z’Tejas, Eddie V’s, and Wildfish Seafood Grille,” says Stephen Perry, lead bartender at Roaring Fork. According to Perry, the Huckleberry has several distinctions from more traditionally flavored margaritas. “First, the type of tequila matters. We use Oro, or gold, tequila as our base spirit,” Perry says. “Second, the type of triple sec matters. We use Leroux, which has a richer flavor than most brands.” Perhaps the biggest secret to the Huckleberry’s success is the blender used to mix the cocktail – or lack thereof. “You will never see a blender behind our bar,” Perry says. “Instead, we use a machine, which gives a smoothie-style consistency to the drink.” Of course, the main ingredient itself, the huckleberry, is often what encourages people to order the drink and also gives the concoction its purple swirled look. “The huckleberry is primarily found in the Rocky Mountains,” says Perry, noting Roaring Fork has ordered its huckleberries from the same small farm in Idaho for two decades. “It has the intensity of a raspberry and flavor notes of a blueberry.” Roaring Fork, 4800 N. I love the arch she gave me! It was like getting an instant lift! I get so many compliments on how my eyeliner enhances my lash line and makes my blue eyes just pop! But it still looks super natural! —Tina Clemmons President/Owner De Novo Scan, Clinical Thermography
I am a breast cancer survivor and my Doctor trusts her patients to Rachell for the final phase of Breasthetics (3-d nipple tattoo and areola restoration) after breast cancer. My tatas are gorgeous thanks to Rachell! After that I totally trusted her to do my eyeliner, which I loved, so then I even did my Eyebrows and Lips! —Ellen Elson Realtor/Luxury Private Listings
I was most impressed with Rachell’s conservative approach to permanent makeup, she really stresses you can always add more and that made me comfortable. She is such a color genius and so experienced. I love that now I can just get up and go. —Dawn Billings Heartlink Founder, Creator of Primary Colors Personality Test

alm Springs, in California’s Coachella Valley, is a one-hour flight or four-hour drive from Scottsdale. Full of diverse activities, the town is a little funky and a whole lot of fun. From fine dining and exclusive hotels to nightlife and culture, Palm Springs is a perfect desert sanctuary for a weekend getaway.

Mid-century Modernism Palm Springs offers some of the country’s best examples of mid-century modern architecture. The use of clean lines, glass and indoor/outdoor living has defined the city since it became a mecca for Hollywood’s A-listers in the last century, and you can still feel those vibes today. Buildings by the great architects – Albert Frey, Donald Wexler, John Lautner and more – are around every corner. Stop into the Palm Springs Visitor Center, located in a revamped Tramway Gas Station, to pick up a map of the city’s best architectural landmarks. If you prefer a guided tour, Palm Springs Historical Society offers a variety of options. The “Inns, Architecture and Glamour Tour” showcases where the rich and famous partied, honeymooned and vacationed. Palm Springs Modern Tours offers longer and more focused small group tours that go into detail about the architecture and characters behind Palm Springs’ colorful past.
Dining With the Stars Dining goes beyond the expected in Palm Springs. From little cafes to gourmet restaurants, there are enough options to keep you returning just for the food. Palm Springs Restaurant Week (www.
Palm Springs Art Museum
palmspringsrestaurantweek.com) takes place June 3-12, and is the ideal time to sample all of the delicious eateries for a great price. Stop by Copley’s, an award-winning restaurant located in part of the former Cary Grant estate. The casual-yet-sophisticated restaurant serves up innovative dishes with fresh California ingredients. Opt to dine on the patio and order the Hawaiian ahi tacos to start. No visit to Palm Springs is complete without dining at Mister Parker’s at The Parker Palm Springs. This little bar, reminiscent of the speakeasies of yesteryear, is dark and seductive but with a fresh bistro menu and some killer desserts. For food with a new perspective, hop on board the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for a 10-minute ride up the mountain with breathtaking views and cooler temps. Peaks Restaurant at 8,516

Famed architect Irwin Schuman built this historic hotel in Old Palm Springs in 1958. It has welcomed famous guests such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Bob Hope, Beyoncé and Jay Z. Today, it offers a fun stay with all the luxury amenities. An evening spent by the fire pits and the pool, with dinner at Circa 59 and drinks in the Starlite Lounge, will take you back to Hollywood’s Golden Era. recently spent one week driving the tumultuous 707-horsepower, supercharged Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. It’s street legal and so powerful, you can expect to turn the quarter-mile at the drag strip in close to 11 seconds at just over 125 mph on Pirelli P Zero summer tires. Swap for drag radials and you’ll record times in the 10-second range. Top speed is 199 mph, and Dodge performance engineers tell us at that speed, the Hellcat will completely empty a full tank of gas in 13 minutes. For the record, the Hellcat is the fastest and most powerful production

muscle car ever made. Credit the 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 that delivers a massive 650 foot-pounds of torque to go along with the ample horsepower. But given all of those astounding numbers, the most impressive of all may be its price: $65,190 includes the delivery charge and a $1,700 federal gas-guzzler tax. By performance car standards, the Hellcat is nothing short of a spectacular and extraordinary bargain. If the incredible horsepower, the mellifluous rumblings of the operatic exhaust system, and the ascending whistling-whine of the supercharger forcing air and fuel into the combustion chambers aren’t enough to draw the wrong kind of attention, the bright blue pearl metallic clear coat paint on my test car alone is enough to do it. The engine’s power is impressive, but so is the incredible smoothness and quick shifting eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, perfectly set up to handle the massive power. A six-speed manual shifter is standard. Despite its capacity for furious and violent acceleration, especially when engaging “track mode,” the Hellcat’s throttle is sweetly civil, enabling the engine to trawl along through heavy traffic. The handling is confident and reassuring, the steering feel is excellent and the huge Brembo brakes just don’t fade or give out. I was especially impressed with the handling and firmness of the suspension with track mode engaged. Save the small snarling Hellcat emblem on either fender and alpha SRT affixed to the trunklid, the exterior look and design is essentially undistinguished from the $27,000 entry-level V-6 Dodge Challenger. While I wouldn’t say it was scary to drive, there’s little question the car wanted to be pushed, and pushed hard. With respect for safety, I’d say it’s best to test its full capabilities on the track. Appeals
Cathy got a terrible ruling from her judge in a divorce, is there anything she can do to fix it?
Yvette says:
First there are options to ask the judge to amend the ruling or award a new trial, but the request has to be filed within 15 days of the final ruling. A notice of appeal must be filed within 30 days of the final ruling if the court has misapplied the evidence or misapplied the law. A panel of three appellate judges will review the appeal and determine if the ruling will be upheld, reversed, or sent back to the judge for another trial or further findings.
Enforcement of Foreign Child Support Order
Jamie has a child support order from Kansas and her ex-husband, who owes her $25,000.00 in child support, moved to Arizona 7 months ago. How can she go about enforcing the judgment?
Jennifer says:
Jamie will have to domesticate the judgment in Arizona. Once she does that, she can move forward with a petition for contempt and a request for a child support arrest warrant.

Mixology that goes beyond the margarita BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
T
equila is the unofficial spirit of warm weather. And with Cinco de Mayo just around the corner, it’s no surprise that many Valley restaurants and bars are serving up cocktails using the Mexican liquor. The margarita may be one of the most popular mixers containing tequila, but that doesn’t mean all of the sipping spots in town are coloring inside the lines. We’re exploring how some of the Valley’s most innovative bartenders are making so much more than margaritas with this versatile ingredient.
The Clever Koi
The Paloma: Although it has the same name as Sierra Bonita’s offering, this Paloma has an entirely different feel. Rather than the orange kick, the cocktail adds in lemongrass soda and sea salt, along with fresh grapefruit and tequila for a fizzy and tart taste. Cost: $9 4236 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; 602.222.3474; www.thecleverkoi.com.

Some of the best things in life are unexpected, and while you may not think to get your taco fix at Old Town Scottsdale’s Citizen Public House, think again. Citizen recently rolled out a new menu of standout selections, and the jerk short rib tacos are no exception. Served as a trio alongside fried plantains, corn tortillas are generously packed with tender short rib meat and topped with a roasted corn salsa, creme fraiche and microgreens. Suffice it to say, these bad boys will take your taste buds right on over to the Caribbean. 7111 E. 5th Ave., Scottsdale; 480.398.4208; www.citizenpublichouse.com. CEVICHE, POR FAVOR!
Chill out with five takes on this seafood favorite BY TARYN JEFFRIES

Hula’s Modern Tiki
M
ay brings about Cinco de Mayo celebrations featuring below-the-border treats as well as an undeniable increase in temperature. Luckily, chilled ceviche is the perfect complement for both occasions. The beauty of ceviche is that the base ingredient (citrus juices) “cook” the fish through acid and a little bit of science, making it a quick dish to prepare and a light, refreshing treat to eat. Here in the Valley you can find so many variations, from traditional to extremely unique and modern. With so many interpretations, why settle on just one version? Check out these five recommendations to see what your ceviche style is!

HULA’S MODERN TIKI
THE RICH, TENDER PROFILE OF THE SEA BASS IS THE PERFECT COMPLEMENT TO THE BITE OF THE CITRUS AND THE POP OF HEAT FROM THE PEPPERS.
7213 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale 480.970.4852 / www.hulasmoderntiki.com Hula’s represents the classic tiki restaurants of eras past, and the menu is well-crafted to reflect the classic flavors of the ’50s and ’60s with modern influences. The fusion of Polynesian and American influences is unique and beloved by patrons. Their Hawaiian ceviche takes on new flavor with the incorporation of coconut milk, adding a hint of sweetness to the fresh white fish, citrus juices, chili, cilantro and garlic. The end result is a sturdier ceviche than you might find at other spots, with the majority of the juices being absorbed into the white fish. The crisp wonton chips served alongside the ceviche provide a perfect accompaniment, making this a dish you won’t soon forget.
SALT + LIME
CANTINA LAREDO 7361 E. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd., Scottsdale 480.951.3807 / www.cantinalaredo.com Cantina Laredo offers guest the opportunity to experience the traditional flavors of Mexican cuisine with a modern twist here and there. They offer a wide variety of dishes to choose from with gluten-free and vegetarian options popping up frequently on the menu. Their ceviche features Chilean sea bass marinated with lime juice and packs an extra heated punch with the addition of both poblano and jalapeno peppers, along with the traditional tomato and cilantro. The ample portion of this buttery fish is then topped with generous avocado, providing a creamy texture. The rich, tender profile of the sea bass is the perfect complement to the bite of the citrus and the pop of heat from the peppers.
DIEGO POPS 4338 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.970.1007 / www.diegopops.com Diego Pops is all about individualistic Mexican food; their unique menu celebrates the flavors of Mexico while putting a fun spin on tried-and-true favorites. The coconut lemongrass ceviche is a clever combination of the anticipated shrimp, cucumber, tomato, red onion, cilantro and fresno chili. The lemongrass lends the citrus the flavor that you’ve come to expect with ceviche, while the coconut provides a slight sweetness. The biting crunch and clean flavors of the red onion and cucumber give a light and distinctive flavor to this ceviche concoction.

9397 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale 480.661.5463 / www.saltandlimeaz.com Salt + Lime is an easy hot spot for refreshing margaritas and killer happy hour deals, but one glance at their modern interpretations on Mexican classics will keep you coming back for more. You’ll find a healthy mix of classic dishes, new interpretations and a merging of the two that creates a tempting selection for any diner. The ceviche is representative of the restaurant’s individualistic take on the cuisine. While most ceviches focus on only one protein, the dish here is a succession of shrimp, scallops and snapper amping up the flavor in the base alone. Add in the requisite cucumber, poblano peppers, onions, tomato, avocado, cilantro and lime and you’ll find that the slightly sweet and briny flavors of the proteins marry perfectly with the fresh base marinade.
SUMOMAYA 6560 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.397.9520 / www.sumomaya.com SumoMaya seamlessly melds Mexican and Asian cuisines into something that just makes sense. These distinctly different flavor combinations create new bold favorites that you may find yourself craving for days to come. If you’re seeking some serious ceviche diversity, you’ll be pleased to find that they have six different variations here. You can opt for the more traditional Mexican shrimp cocktail with a base of citrus and tomato broth – plus the unique addition of tajin-spiced popcorn. Or, if you’re looking for something a little different, try their hamachi tiradito, which unites the flavors of yuzu, truffle oil, green apple, micro shiso and ikura. The sourness of the yuzu and apple parlay into the heady flavor of the truffle, creating a very special dish. There is no room for boredom with the choices here!

SALT CELLAR The Salt Cellar has been a feature in the Valley since 1971 and consistently ranks among the top seafood restaurants year after year. As the chef is able to procure different seasonal fish throughout the year, you will see their menu board changing which can equate to a new experience as the year goes by. They always have seriously large live Maine lobsters on the menu. If lobster isn’t your thing, you really can’t go wrong with any of the Salt Cellar specialties. 550 N. One of the more exciting features of the restaurant is the Southwestern-inspired flavors that are incorporated into the seafood dishes. The coconut crunchy shrimp features crab fried rice with a citrus chili sauce, imparting a complex sweet and spicy flavor to the approachable entree. 7255 E. You’ll find a menu complete with Black Angus offerings paired perfectly with Moody Blue cheese, which are both the focus of this restaurants name. The restaurant pays homage to the spirit of Arizona’s ranching history along with that of the Cartwright family. The modern ranch cuisine combines dishes that our early settlers and ranchers may have enjoyed along the trail paired with modern techniques and styles, creating comforting dishes with New World flair. Dishes like their red chili elk balls combine this protein with cotija queso and a deep, rich red chili cream sauce. The steaks are simply prepared, allowing the flavors to stand alone. 6710 E. VEGETARIAN
FRESH MINT Here, you’ll find extremely fresh and flavorful vegetarian and vegan options with a Vietnamese twist. A variety of familiar options are improved upon with the use of unexpected and interesting ingredients. Their fresh cucumber rolls are addictive, and the curry apple tofu entree is an exciting, surprising dish. The flavor profile that is born from the combination of apples, raisin, tomato, pine nuts, soy and onion is something I would have never imagined and the turmeric curry sauce brings out the best in each component, creating a flavor you’ll be coming back for. 13802 N. GrabbaGreen hits the spot if you’re looking for a quick smoothie after a workout or a satisfying breakfast bowl after a long bike ride. The buckwheat bowl is a great morning option and comes complete with organic buckwheat, chia, strawberry, banana and honey. Are eggs more of your thing? Try out their steamed egg option – organic steamed eggs with sea salt served with half an apple and avocado. Breakfast of champions, indeed! 15689 N. There are concerns that they will not be fully satiated after a meal and that there will be all sorts of menu items with ingredients that they’ve never heard of or tried. True Food Kitchen offers an easy introduction into vegetarian eating, and a palate-pleasing one at that. Ease into your meal with their generous vegetable crudites, served with tzatziki and an earthy umami riddled black olive tapenade. Their entree options delight diners with vegetarian and gluten-free options and a few non-vegetarian proteins (just in case!). 15191 N. n order to ensure the launch of the Crab & Mermaid Fish Shop was a success, parent company Square One Concepts – known for their already established Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers and Wasted Grain brands in the Valley – did just that. They started at square one. “Creating a casual seafood concept for Old Town Scottsdale has long been our goal,” says Alecia Sanchez, Square One Concepts’ marketing director. “And we knew if we wanted to do it right, we had to go straight to the seafood mecca – the Northeast – to find the perfect chef.” And find him – they did. In late 2015, Square One recruited chef Isaac Carter, who culinary icon Todd English nicknamed the “Golden Boy” during their decade-plus working together, to help them conceptualize Crab & Mermaid, from the decor and location to the ingredients and recipes. “Carter – an alumnus of the Culinary
Institute of America in New York – is the real deal,” Sanchez says. “Not only did he work with English on the original Olives in Massachusetts and its eventual second location at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, he also helped open Todd English Pub and Eva Longoria’s Beso, both in Las Vegas.” He also served as sous chef at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, overseeing the nine restaurants in the museum, with an eye for seafood and passion for experimenting with bold flavors from across the globe without losing the flavor of the actual fish in the process. “My vision is to bring a taste of the East Coast and Gulf Coast to Scottsdale while still staying true to the more Bajastyle seafood preparations guests might be used to,” says Carter, noting his menu will go so far as to offer a “choose your own adventure” option wherein visitors can choose a fish, a preparation, a style and various flavor combinations for his team to

The casual seashore-themed venue has a 3,000-square-foot interior with a 940-square-foot patio, which features a full bar. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
