here are some people you meet who just exude a warmth and an enthusiasm for life that is contagious. That’s Carey Peña. Over the past year, as we’ve worked together on an event committee, I’ve gotten to know her better—and I’m so glad. I can tell you that she is just as amazing in person as you saw her to be on-air during her long career with Channel 3—she’s one of the most genuine people you’ll ever meet. If you’ve been wondering what’s she’s been up to since she left Channel 3, we’ve got the scoop on page 44. She took her enthusiasm for life and created a company that both inspires, helps, and celebrates others—just as she does. Make sure to not only read her story, but to check out her company. In this issue we also talk about luxury experiences on page 72. Get ready to embrace life and go have fun! Personally, I’m holding out for the car experience (hint to my husband for the holidays!). And, if you’re hungry, we’ve got the scoop on some of the best tacos around. Our food writer, Taryn Jeffries, scoured menus and taste-tested numerous tacos to bring you the selection on page 120. Let us know which is your favorite! Enjoy your month!

heir names conjure an image all on their own—El Hefe, Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row, American Junkie, The Lodge. Between Ryan Hibbert, Mike Troyan and Jon Wright, the three have created some of Scottsdale’s most legendary nightlife spots, and with a focus on setting—rather than following—trends, their Riot Hospitality Group (RHG) has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

up close “In the hospitality industry you have to differentiate yourself with the environments you create, and the quality of product you serve. We’re very good at creating an environment, a culture,” says Ryan Hibbert, CEO. Hibbert, an Arizona native and University of Arizona graduate, has a degree in molecular and cellular biology and joined forces with Troyan and Wright in 2010 to form Riot Hospitality Group. Hospitality has always been in his blood. “I am a big believer in managing by doing; grassroots develop all my management. That’s the difference between me and most of my competitors,” says Hibbert. “I run the restaurant business by developing talent and getting my hands dirty every day.” But Hibbert is just one piece of the talent. Jon Wright, who is a founding partner and president of RHG, and Mike Troyan have more two decades of experience between them. After working for almost a decade promoting some of San Diego’s hottest establishments, Troyan’s passion, creativity, and ambition for the hospitality industry lead him to be an integral part in the acquisition and conceptual development of American Junkie, which opened in 2008, and which quickly became one Scottsdale’s top bars. Troyan is now the vital component of the acquisition, conceptual design and operations for all of RHG’s concepts and locations. Always scouting for new locations and developing fresh concepts with his partners at Riot Hospitality Group, Troyan has also developed deep ties to the Scottsdale community and currently holds the position of vice president of the Scottsdale Downtown and Entertainment District Association. Wright originally hails from Chicago, and is an Arizona State University graduate. Thriving on his

one-of-a-kind concepts and keen entrepreneurial sense, Wright opened his first restaurant and bar, The Lodge, in the early 2000s in Scottsdale. Offering guests a retreat from the Scottsdale standard, Wright’s unique cabinesque décor, along with a laid-back staff and large patio, was an instant success. Wright’s partners credit his passion for the various concepts and creativity as the driving force behind the success of RHG. As president, his emphasis is on continuing the trend of innovation and creating new concepts while strategically growing existing successful concepts. “We give local residents an opportunity where they feel like they belong, and they love what they are experiencing,” says Hibbert. He adds that it’s easy to emulate another brand or look, which most operators do, but it takes true work and understanding of the hospitality industry to forge a new path like they have done. Each of their concepts has its own unique identity—El Hefe, Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row, and the group’s latest concept, Farm & Craft, which is scheduled

to open this February in the old Stingray Sushi location in Old Town Scottsdale. The owners are opening Farm & Craft for one simple reason—to fill a void in what they call the mundane and the status quo within the landscape of everyday eating and drinking. “We feel that the enhanced experience of eating great, exceptionally sourced foods will change your life,” they explain. “If we question the source of an item, can’t pronounce its name, or it doesn’t occupy the space between good for you (healthy) and good for the land, it’s simple—we just don’t use it.” They won’t be focused on counting calories or the stress of being on a new fad diet, or the next hip way to eat, they say. Instead, they will be true “flexitarians,” meaning Food & Craft will have the flexibility to add organic fruits and vegetables and great proteins to anything in any form. “We serve real food, which means using whole ingredients like whole grain flour, raw vegetables, fruits and legumes. We prepare everything the way it was done hundreds of years ago: raw, grilled, or cooked in a stone hearth oven. We keep our ingredient lists short and sweet, and avoid things like preservatives and artificial sweeteners,” Hibbert explains. The group promises a great selection of local craft beers, as well as some of the best handcrafted cocktails, which will be made only from responsibly sourced ingredients. For a group which currently employs more 350 people and has annual sales of over $30 million, there are no plans of slowing down, including the opening of Dierks Whiskey Row Tempe and similar concepts in other cities across the Valley and country. “The key is to create an environment that people love and want to be a part of, where friends can congregate, enjoy each other’s company, and truly experience the quality of the food and drink,” says Hibbert.

A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, Stylist and Color Expert, Sachi Studios

With every new year comes new possibilities; the urge for change, for a fresh start, is nearly universal. And if you’ve heard of master stylist Rodney Gentry, this year you’ll want to start with your hair. His clients could just as easily be called fans, even traveling from other states because they’ll trust no one else with their tresses – and if you talk to any of them, be prepared for some enthusiastic gushing. Renowned for his skill, Gentry has become one of the most sought-after stylists in the Valley. Before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry owned and operated his own salon in Chicago, where he perfected the techniques for which he’s become legendary. Now located in the Sachi Studios, he brings modern, big-city style, infused with a hearty splash of Midwestern charm that makes clients feel instantly comfortable: a combination which, more often than not, garners an unshakable loyalty. Drawing on years of experience, with a keen eye and attention to detail, Gentry strives to bring out the best in each of his clients, whether doing a routine trim or a dramatic hair makeover. He not only focuses on the style and color, but on restoring the health of the hair to full vitality, strength, and shine. “I don’t skimp when it comes to products,” he says. “I use the high-quality stuff. It’s all top of the line.” In Gentry’s capable hands damaged hair doesn’t stand a chance, transforming from dry, frizzy, lackluster locks, often within just a few sessions. Above all, Gentry specializes in color. Highlights are expertly placed to accentuate his clients’ features, color customdesigned to flatter each unique skin tone. AMERICAN DREAMS

Kevin J. Palmer’s book unlocks the secret to financial success BY KAMILLA GRAHAM PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

S

cottsdale resident Kevin J. Palmer had a middle-class upbringing in suburban New York. His hard-working parents nurtured him with all-American values of hard work, truth, honor and justice. These values led him to a successful career as an investment strategist on Wall Street and a behavioral finance researcher. Now, he is adding “author” to his impressive resume. Palmer—who describes himself as strategic and organized—along with his firm, SMA Institute, and a group of analysts, have scientifically mapped out the financial decisions of hundreds of “the quite rich” that created wealth. The research found that a person needs to not just work hard, but discover their own “spiritual-self, and then apply actions that uniquely fit their personality.” Palmer believes that, “Wealth is not one-size-fits-all, and so The Quiet Rich wasn’t written to get rich, but to help people find their own unique process for finding wealth. What works for me might not be what works for you.” The Quite Rich: Ordinary People Reawakening an American Dream is available at www.amazon.com.

Etc.

What advice would you give young adults to help them organically discover their road to success? One, foster an intuitive belief that you are on this earth for a greater unique purpose. Two, recognize that your particular purpose is bound to a moral responsibility to others. Three, understand that fantasies do not come true but dreams can be achieved when you have conviction to manifest your own vision. Four, maintain an unwavering work ethic that links your daily journey to future achievements. You’re a “champion of financial justice.” What does that mean to you personally, and how have you continued to achieve this? The name was given to me by someone when I volunteered with at-risk kids, and I’m glad it stuck. After economic arrogance resulted in the Great Recession in 2008, I made myself accountable to people who paid the highest price—my neighbors. I continue to defend individual divinity because it holds unknown supremacies that predispose each person to define a path based on their own personal value sets, so they can have all they want in life. ometimes you just need someone to help you with that perfect smoky eye. Or, with makeup that packs a punch for an all-important business meeting. Or those many gala events. Leiah Scheibel and Alexandra Bradberry have you covered with their new venture, The Sparkle Bar. The co-founders and beauty gurus spent 18 months planning each detail of the concept, from the soothing and classy interior space to the makeup services and classes offered. At The Sparkle Bar, every makeup application is customized to your needs— including the products and brands of makeup used. Talented makeup artists from around the state are there to work their magic—but you won’t find makeup to purchase here. Instead, it’s all about customizing an application just for you from the selection of high-quality products that were hand-curated by the co-founders. The services offered include everything from a quick “Blush Rush” application (eyes, cheeks, lips) for $25 to a fullface application for $40. There are bridal packages, teen makeup, beauty classes, one-on-one consultations, and more. “How fortunate are we that we’re able to play with makeup and meet amazing women?” says Bradberry. 4200 N. Marshall Way #7, Scottsdale; 480.941.3438; www.thesparklebar.com.

Etc.

What is the one product you can’t live without? Scheibel: Han Crème Cheek Stick because you can use it as your lip color or cheek color—and with your bright pink cheek, you look more happy, healthy and awake. Where are some of your favorite spots to go to when your makeup is done? Bradberry: Anywhere. I feel like anytime that I have my makeup done, I can go anywhere. I feel confident and like I can take on the world. How did it feel to see this concept come to fruition? Bradberry: We’re incredibly proud and super grateful. We could have very easily just quit when we found some huge obstacles, but we didn’t. We feel very proud of what we’ve been able to create here, and also about the amazing opportunity we’ve been able to create for other makeup artists. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

hen he walks into the office each day, you will typically find John Chapman wearing slacks and a button-up shirt. It’s pretty normal office wear, but Chapman says he does try to spice it up with some color and funky socks each day. “When it comes to business stuff, I typically stick to Calvin Klein or Express for my clothes because I’m more about the cut than the name,” he says. “I’m probably a little more conservative, but I certainly wear colors, like purple and bold hues, with no shame.” When it comes to life outside of work, Chapman is pretty easygoing and casual. During the warmer months around Arizona you will find him wearing a T-shirt and a pretty basic pair of shorts. When out with friends or on a date, Chapman leans more towards a nice pair of jeans, boots as often as he can, and usually a short-sleeved collared shirt. The one thing Chapman is sure to have on hand at all times is sunglasses— lots of sunglasses. From Oliver Peoples to Tom Ford, Chapman has plenty of pairs to choose from each day.

JOHN CHAPMAN Wears business casual with an edge

What colors are your favorite to wear right now? Because of the season I’m normally wearing blues, grays and blacks, with a few accents where I can. Is there anyone in Hollywood who your style emulates? I really like the classic looks, so George Clooney and Matthew McConaughey come to mind, but the JFK look is more me. Is there anything about your style or your closet that people would be surprised to learn? I don’t own more than a couple pairs of black socks. Fun socks are one of the few ways guys can stand out and be original.

KANNA REILLY

Loves a layered fashion look BY KAMILLA GRAHAM PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

K

anna Reilly has always been interested in beauty. She admits that she likes for everything to be beautiful, from her clothes to her home (which includes a 250-square-foot closet). Her business, Pure Vanity, was founded as way for everyone to enhance the natural beauty that they were born with, and because she believes that everyone deserves affordable luxury beauty treatments. While she knows that beautiful skin is a great accessory, she also believes that what you wear affects how beautiful you feel. When asked her best fashion advice, she offered this: “Feel beautiful in whatever you are wearing. Life is too short to not wear clothes that make us feel beautiful and good about ourselves every day!” Where do you find inspiration for your everyday fashion? Style blogs, fashion magazines, and I love to wear a lot of things at once. Layering is big for me—tops on top of tops, layering scarves, jackets, jewelry, shawls, wraps. Do you have a favorite designer? I really don’t have a favorite. I think it depends on the mood. I like classics like Chanel, but I also like the laid-back feel of Eli Levite’s brand Johnny Was. Each are on polar opposite ends of the spectrum in every way. What is one item that you’d never imagine parting with? Things in my closet come and go over the years. I think the things that I tend to keep have sentimental value—things that I wore on a special day or that have captured a special memory for me. My grandmother gifted me her diamond earrings before she died and I wear them every day. But most things in my closet are just things that can be replaced—and I usually do.

INSPIRING THE PUBLIC IN A NEW FASHION Former TV news anchor Carey Pe単a takes on the new age of media with a new business venture BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

or many people in the Valley, the name Carey Peùa is likely pretty easily recognizable. She has been a trusted source in the media for many years, as a popular face on Arizona’s 3TV. However, that all changed last year when she left the television business and ventured out into the corporate world.

SS_44_47CareyPena_Nov15.indd 45

10/26/15 4:41 PM

“Since leaving television I’ve launched Inspired Media 360. It has exceeded my wildest expectations,” she says. As for the name, “Inspiration is my favorite word. Everything I do is based on the premise of being inspired by and inspiring others. I loved working in traditional television news and I was so appreciative to be able to learn and grow in that industry. Starting this company was just the next step forward for me, personally, in this great journey.” For her latest venture, Peña is taking a different spin on spreading information not only across the Valley, but the nation. “My media firm has two divisions: news and strategy,” she explains. For the News Division, it is dedicated to uncovering and producing empowering and inspirational stories meant to convey a message to the audience. While the stories will cover a broad variety of topics, there will be a heavy focus on politics and public policy. There is also another side to Peña’s new company, the Strategy Division, which works with clients to create visual stories for use in the digital media world. “Through storytelling, we help individuals and businesses better define their brand and also increase their exposure,” she says. This part of the business will also focus on honing in the skills such as oneon-one media coaching and development. Peña says they aren’t stopping here, either. “The next step for the firm will be to get involved in some documentary projects, which is something I have wanted to do for a long time.” Two of the biggest influences behind Peña making the move from television life to a corporate and business life are her twins. “People used to tell me that when you have kids, time goes by fast. Now I see how true that is. My twins just started kindergarten! A lot of people in Phoenix literally watched me grow up on the air, and they’ve watched my babies grow, as well.” Peña decided the timing was finally right to make the move as her kids were growing up, but she admits that things are certainly different behind the scenes at the business than when working in television news. “As a news anchor and reporter, I didn’t really have to manage people. Now that I am running a company, I’m running it on all

fronts: editorial decisions, payroll, making money, building a team, and more. So I have a whole new set of responsibilities.” However, Peña adds, there is one thing that has remained constant. “One thing has stayed the same—the storytelling. Telling great stories, inspirational stories, was one of my favorite things when I worked in television news, and it continues to be important to me to be able to do the same with my new company.” Telling great stories has always been a part of who Peña is and strives to be. During her tenure on television, she had the opportunity to interview some of the highest profile people in the country, including President Barack Obama, secretaries of state, senators, congressmen and governors. She has also had one-on-one interviews with other popular personalities, including Martha Stewart, Dr. Oz and Deepak Chopra. Her commitment to telling a story, and the stories of those pivotal faces in the public, make her that much more of a reliable and believable voice for today’s news-gathering and storytelling. Peña believes that digital media has changed the game of journalism, which is part of why she is moving forward in an aggressive direction, hitting the ground running. According to Peña’s personal bio on her website, she recognized early on the significance and power the new digital media was having on the way she was reporting the news. She knew it was an exciting time, and she wanted to get heavily involved in the way news and information was being portrayed to the public. Sticking with the digital media idea, Peña is also getting her messages across with a new podcast. She is very excited about the progress so far, and can’t wait to see where things go from here. “We’ve already been featured on the front page of iTunes News and Politics. I set up a studio in Old Town Scottsdale and hired a great guy, a local radio personality, to produce my show, Carey Peña Reports. He is my right-hand man.” The show varies weekly, featuring a variety of guests. She interviews newsmakers; politicians; public figures; and experts in the worlds of fitness, finance, health, social media, real estate and business. However, the buck doesn’t stop SO SCOTTSDALE! |

there—her interviews could be of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. “I love stories that show strength of human spirit,” she says. Many women, young ladies, and want-to-be entrepreneurs can’t help but look to Peña as a mentor. When asked what advice she would offer these folks who are starting their own businesses, Peña says, “It is wonderful to have a dream, but you also need to have a game plan and be able to execute it. Surround yourself with people who share your vision and work ethic.” Peña stresses that while you need to put in the hard work and hours, it isn’t just about yourself and what you want to do. “Putting together the right team is key. Do not have analysis paralysis— sometimes you just have to know what works and what doesn’t. It if doesn’t work, keep moving forward.” Peña says that while she is happy to offer advice and speak with anyone about starting a business or making a career change, she does want to stress that, “Nobody can give you advice about what will make you happy. Only you know the answer. If you can tap into a passion and translate that into something that you do, life is good.” News, storytelling and media coaching aren’t all that Peña and Inspired Media 360 (www.inspiredmedia360.com) has to offer its clients. She has also served as the emcee for dozens of high-profile events, and moderated political and public policy debates. She also makes one fantastic Master of Ceremonies. Peña is a firm believer that it is important to make life matter, every day, and so that is what she is doing with Inspired Media 360.

“NOBODY CAN GIVE YOU ADVICE ABOUT WHAT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY. ONLY YOU KNOW THE ANSWER. IF YOU CAN TAP INTO A PASSION AND TRANSLATE THAT INTO SOMETHING THAT YOU DO, LIFE IS GOOD.”

INFO: www.thrdesignstudio.com What inspired you to found this? My belief in the benefits of design. My passion for the cannabis experience. My intuition that cannabis retail was/is our country’s next great social experience. After being involved in the cannabis industry for six years, I had to find a way to elevate these businesses and help them better serve their patients and communities. What was the most difficult challenge you faced? Inventing a career based on intuition and passion. And, convincing the cannabis retail industry that design was and is essential to its success. What was the biggest lesson you learned? The importance of good contracts and clear communication, especially when selling professional services to an unstable industry. What is one thing you wish people had told you? That a career based on intuition and passion requires more time, money, sweat and tears than you ever could expect. What do you hope is the future of the company? More clients. More challenges. More success. More talented team members. More innovation.

Kelley Bird, 45, Keely Newman, 45 COMPANY NAME: Grabbagreen® YEAR FOUNDED: 2013 WHAT IT IS: Grabbagreen is a fast food and juice restaurant where great-tasting, healthy food meet the speed and convenience of traditional fast food. There are currently three Valley locations. And, the pipeline of committed franchise stores since Grabbagreen’s franchise announcement in April now contains more than 16 franchise deals signed, and more than 150 development agreements that are slated to open over the next several years around the U.S. INFO: www.grabbagreen.com What inspired you to found this? We were moms and childhood friends, and found it increasingly difficult to feed our growing families nutritious meals between sports and all of the other extracurricular activities. Cooking was not always an option, and we were fed up with unhealthy fast food options. With convenience and health consciousness in mind, we decided to create Grabbagreen, a place to quickly grab healthy, whole and organic food. What was the most difficult challenge you faced? Operations. Neither one of us had prior restaurant experience, so we were challenged in the beginning with the immense popularity and lines in the store, and executing our orders in a timely and accurate manner.

What was the biggest lesson you learned? That anything is possible if you put everything you have into it. It is incredible when your vision comes to life, and with the success of Grabbagreen in less than three years, we truly are leading the charge in making fast food healthy. What is one thing you wish people had told you? “No” will never come between you and your dream job.

We are Arizona born and raised and we share a passion for this great state. From Arizona sports teams to the beautiful outdoors and the diverse culture, there is a lot to be proud of and we wanted to give people a stylish way to showcase that local pride. What was the most difficult challenge you faced? Balancing State Forty Eight with our full-time jobs. It limited what we could do and we sacrificed a lot of our free time to work on the company— but we’ve come a long way, and between the three of us, we have done a great job growing the business.

What was the biggest lesson you learned? Realizing that being a business owner doesn’t always mean you are right or that your ideas are the best ones. Listen to people who have been there before you, and most of all, listen to your customers. That’s key. What do you hope is the future of the company? We would like for State Forty Eight to become the apparel line of Arizona. We aim to be a household name within the community while still appealing to tourists. Down the road, we hope to create even more options for our customers and make the clothing more physically accessible in other parts of the state. It’s only up from here.

I created my new brand to inspire creativity through workshops, events, my books, art, and textile design. I help others hear the loving voice in their head and step into a passionate life. Creativity is the new black. What was the most difficult challenge you faced? Money. Time. They are both the same. There is only one me in my business and I’m wearing all the hats. What was the biggest lesson you learned? The only thing that matters in business is people. Period. Connect with your tribe. Honor your tribe. Kindness is the only way.

What is one thing you wish people had told you? If someone had told me sooner to make a map to get me from point A to point B instead of wandering organically with an open heart, I probably wouldn’t have listened to them. But I wish they had told me anyway. What do you hope is the future of the company? Six figures? Haha!

EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

Dr. Andrew Wolin brings over 20 years of experience in using patient’s own fat to sculpt and contour faces, breasts and bodies

LIPS AND LINES

So... you’ re looking in the magnifying mirror as you put on your eyeshadow, your mascara and your cheek foundation and now you get a good look at your lips. A gasp of disbelief permeates the atmosphere. “ Where did those lines come from...I didn’t see them there last week.. how will I ever hide the grooves and lines with my lip liner and lipstick? At the Wolin Plastic Surgery Center, Dr Andrew Wolin has found multiple solutions to the “lips and LInes” dilemma. For the past few years Dr Wolin has incorporated his 20 year experience with fat transfer with his 20 year experience with laser skin therapy to eradicate all those irregularities and grooves in the lips. By using MICROFAT transfer of a patient’s own fat and combining the MICRO FAT transfer with laser therapy, he has been able to conquer the battle of the lip lines. The procedure is an office procedure done under local anesthesia, taking less than 45 minutes. Not only is FAT being transferred, but STEM CELLS and growth factors are also transferred with the fat to improve the overall health of the lips as well as the appearance.

For those patients that want a faster, less permanent solution to the lip problems, Dr Wolin is using Micro Cannula injection of Juvederm to provide a painless and bruiseless solution to the lip line problem.

SS_58_61LowDown_Nov15.indd 59

For those who are looking to rejuvenate an aging lip or simply add volume to a lifelong thin lip, there are also fat transfer options for long term permanent correction or Juvederm for a shorter term temporary fix. By utilizing blunt cannulas rather than needles, the procedures are almost painless, do not cause bruising and provide the patients with a great experience.

Call The Wolin Plastic Surgery Center for your new fuller, smoother and more kissable lips...

Dr Wolin is the director of the Wolin Plastic Surgery Center and has been practicing aesthetic surgery in Scottsdsle for the last 28 years. n sixth grade, Deena Goldstein realized that art has zero boundaries. During holiday class time, Goldstein and her classmates were asked to draw and color the season’s jubilant poster child, Santa Claus. While her fellow pupils rummaged through the crayon box in quest of the perfect shade of red, Goldstein did what an artist would do and selected a non-traditional color. “I handed my piece to the teacher— she looked at me like a deer in front of headlights and said, ‘Deena, Santa is red!’ I thought to myself, ‘No, today he’s purple!’” she says, smiling. That purple Santa was a pivotal moment in Goldstein’s life as an artist. It taught her to never restrict her creativity to the confines of color and expectations; rather, to always color outside of the lines. Goldstein (www.deenagoldstein.

com) pursued her love for the arts at the University of South Florida in Tampa, where she received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. “In college, my area of focus was graphite illustration. I loved capturing the realism, texture, expression and detail in faces,” she says. Her art can be described as raw and unfiltered. Goldstein effectively captures her core with every brushstroke that sweeps across her canvas. “My art is free, flowing, light, layered, colorful, whimsical, and poignant. It is a mirror of my insides, a true and honest reflection of my heart and soul,” she explains. Goldstein’s work is dynamic and multi-dimensional. She does everything from acrylic and multimedia to reclaimed materials and—her personal favorite—digital giclee. The digital format offers Goldstein unlimited access to multiple mediums like airbrush, pen and ink, oils, acrylics and chalk. The freedom to utilize as many tools as she wants in one piece creates an extraordinary amount of depth and texture to a virtual image. What inspires this free-spirited artist? What other than life’s vast and limitless experiences. Goldstein’s creativity is fueled by the people she meets, the stories she hears, the moments treasured, and the feelings felt. “‘Capturing art from life’s inspirational journey’ is a phrase I coined which defines my creative process,” she says. Indeed, Goldstein’s muse is life and her journey as a traveler in it. This wife, mother and artist will never stop coloring outside of the lines. Her fascination for art began as a little girl, when she admired her mother’s sketchbook— and that fascination has never strayed. “What I love most about being an artist is the ability to share emotion and life on canvas with people and provide an opportunity for connection with others,” she adds. “The thought of being able to elicit joy and emotion in others from my work is an incredible feeling.” Goldstein’s work was already eliciting a response even in sixth grade. Her teacher had felt something—whether it was joy, disbelief, confusion, or happiness—she felt and reacted to Goldstein’s whimsical, artistic rendition of Santa Claus.

TABLE THAT

These handcrafted side tables are the epitome of functional art BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

These beautifully handcrafted side tables, called Pueblo Plum, are available in walnut, pine, dark cottonwood and light cottonwood, and are part of Millicent’s classic line of wooden furniture. They include hand-carved relief patterns on the exterior. The patterns were inspired by owner and designer Emily Henry’s upbringing in Taos, New Mexico. She grew up on the edge of Taos Pueblo, and along the acequias (irrigation ditches) dense thickets of wild plum grew. These are available in both two-door and three-door options, and can be ordered by a designer through John Brooks Showroom at the Scottsdale Design Center, 2712 N. 68th St., Scottsdale. Designer net pricing for the side tables starts at $10,373.

BROW HOW

Polished brows are your no-fail fall accessory BY LISA KASANICKY

E

yebrows are just as much a defining facial feature as a strong chin or a wide forehead—except of course, that splendid brows can be shaped and even faked when necessary. So once you’ve established the arc (or arch depending on what look you’re aiming for) of perfection, how do you maintain your frame between appointments? We tapped Nicky Mayers, owner of The Brow Lady in Old Town Scottsdale, for her tips on maintaining a better brow. Her first bit of advice is that while the fall/winter stylecasters appear to have taken a ride on the bushy brow bandwagon, it’s not a look for everyone. Thick, bold brows give you a more youthful look, but beware of the crossing the line into Neanderthal land. Opt for a natural, defined look. Mayers says the first rule of home maintenance is to only tweeze hairs that have grown outside of the brow line, and only underneath the brow. She recommends tweezing both eyebrows at the same time, taking a few hairs off each side at a time, rather than going overboard on one side and enduring the nearly impossible task of matching it on the other side. Shaping up unruly brows can be a bit trickier. Her rule of thumb is that eyebrows should start before the eye on the nose side and not after. Keep the shape even all the way across to avoid the odd but all-too-common “tadpole sitting on top of your eyes” look. When applying makeup to your brows, less is more—you should never be able to see where the makeup starts and the hairs stop.

Maintenance Must-Haves BrowLady Growth Eyebrow & Eyelash Enhancing Serum ($60) and BrowLady Fix & Shape brush-on brow color ($25). Both are available at The Brow Lady, 480.212.4000. FOR SHAPING: Tweezerman Stainless Steel Slant Tweezer, $23 at Sephora, 480.991.0915. They’re top-rated, easy to handle, precise, and all you need to snag stray hairs. FOR GROWING: Talika Eyebrow Lipocils Eyebrow Conditioning Gel, $44 at Nordstrom, 480.946.4111. It stimulates eyebrow hair follicle growth to develop thicker, fuller brows in 28 days. FOR FILLING: Blinc Eyebrow Mouse, $24 at Sephora. A water-resistant tint that tames, shapes and fills in brows. Available in nine colors, including clear. NEW YORK, NEW YORK

What’s not to love about the city that never sleeps? BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTO BY NYC & COMPANY/WILL STEACY

B

Now that it’s getting to be holiday time, you should also head to Rockefeller Center—the Christmas Tree will be lit this year on Dec. 2, and it’s a great way to ring in the holiday season. Of course, so is taking a spin on the ice rink there, as well! One other must-see is The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum. There are no words to describe it, except to say that you need to go.

right lights, big city—yes, it’s true that New York is the city that never sleeps. Wander outdoors in the middle of the night and there’s a good chance you can still find a restaurant open somewhere, and people still out and about.

Staying There From The Plaza Hotel to the Four Seasons Hotel New York, there are more hotels than you can count. One popular locale is the W Hotels New York, which has five locations throughout the city. They are all great, though the one on Lexington and the one in Times Square are my personal favorites due to their convenient locations. Bonus—you receive Bliss Spa products in your bathroom at all W Hotels!

Sights If New York is on your bucket list, there are few must-include sights to see. To get a perspective on the city, start with the Top of the Rock Observation Deck, where you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views of the city below. A walk through Central Park should also be on your list—an oasis in the middle of buildings, with expanses of green grass in the summer and winter snow and an ice rink in the winter, with lots of little nooks and crannies to investigate. For those of you who enjoy art, there are enough museums to keep you busy for a long time. The Metropolitan Museum of Art should be one that makes your list. If you’re able to, get tickets to a show on Broadway or at Radio City Music Hall. There are also many TV shows that film in the City, though you often need to get tickets well in advance. Though touristy, don’t leave without a visit to Times Square— the energy there is palpable (and I’m partial to the M&Ms store nearby, as well!). You’ll also want to make sure you stroll through Little Italy and Chinatown. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

SS_92_93Places_Wheels_Nov15.indd 92

Food Food, oh the food. It’s everywhere, and oh so good. You can simply restaurant hop, or take a food tour, but make sure you pick up all the basics, from bagels to “New York pizza,” as well as gourmet eats. Two favorite stops for dessert are Serendipity 3 for its famous frozen hot chocolate and Schmackary’s for its cookies.

Nightlife You won’t want for things to do at night in New York. Whether you’re into clubs, pubs or bars, or comedy clubs or coffee shops, there’s something open somewhere nearby. New York truly is the city that never sleeps, and if there’s something you’re looking for—from culture to music to food and more—you’ll find it here.

or almost two decades, the Lexus RX has been the benchmark for luxury midsized crossovers and SUVs. The yard marks are wide, but you’re going to shell out anywhere between $45,000 and $70,000 to purchase one. The competitive set includes the cream of the crop: Audi Q5, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and a few others. I recommend leasing such nonsense. Price notwithstanding, this segment is growing so fast, it seems that within five years, Americans will be issued one with their learning permits. You just knew that when Lexus decided to redo the RX, it was going to be awesome. And it is. The RX is a fantastic vehicle and has been a huge seller—absolutely saving the brand for more than a decade.

There’s no denying that Lexus makes some of the world’s best and most beautiful automobiles. I can’t help thinking the RX would have won the Lexus swimsuit contest had it not been the latest of its siblings born with the “spindle” grille. More about that in a minute. Slip into the driver’s seat and you’ll be greeted by Lexus’s handsome, rational interior, lined in lustrous aluminum trim, gorgeous wood veneers, French-stitched leather dash and door gussets, perforated leather seats, and an immense array of technological features. Among the exterior details, Lexus presents a challenging bit of design with the RX’s unfortunate proboscis. Let’s say it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. The cavernous opening of the brand’s signature grille, set between spear-shaped LED light tubes and severe sanguinary headlamps, encompasses nearly the entire front end. It’s even more acrimonious and equivocal than the one adorning the new NX compact crossover. I couldn’t stop looking at the maw—like that of Donatella Versace— more out of ravenous bewilderment and curiosity than enchantment. Behind the grille is the familiar 3.5liter V-6 that makes 295-horsepower and is mated to a new eight-speed transmission. There’s also an RX450h hybrid model powered by the 3.5-liter V-6 and an Atkinson electric motor for a combined 308 horsepower. The hybrid model sports a less-in-your-face grille. We drove three different RX models and each was consistently smooth, quiet, well constructed, and delivered more-thanadequate power. All told, the new RX is by far more visually outgoing in its redesign. We’re guessing it will not only appeal to RX loyalists, but will bring converts to the brand. Overall, a smart pick for a luxury five-passenger crossover. Automotive writer Jim Prueter is a spokesperson for AAA, and his auto reviews and travel stories appear nationally in print and online. TACO THE TOWN

We are blessed to live in a place where tacos are bountiful and seem to be on every menu, no matter where you go to eat. What makes a taco great can cause a heated debate, but we’ve scoured all the menus we could get our hands on and taste-tested countless hand-held treats to find the best our neighborhoods have to offer. Whether you are looking for the flavors of street tacos or something more non-traditional or gourmet, these Scottsdale spots have you covered.

the cigar bar to carry a wide selection of premium cigars. Whether you’re looking for the hard-to-find brands or one of the popular brands known all over the world, the owners are correct when they say they have it all. Their humidor features exclusive blends and very limited releases from some of the top cigar manufacturers in the world, and a tobacconist is always on hand to share their knowledge or offer pairing advice. “And while public perception of cigars has historically been that of a ‘good old boys’ club,’ we find that there are more and more women coming in to enjoy a smoke and a cocktail. And in an effort to encourage this, we’ve made every effort to create an environment conducive to everyone, including a state-of-the-art ventilation system,” says Cliff Coen, operating manager. As a collective group, Fox Cigar Bar strives to provide guests with the best selection of cigars, spirits and atmosphere. All of this is secondary only to a focus on customer service and making your visit memorable. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
