FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR SKIN & HAIR AGAIN. NHL’s highly effective services will revitalize your hair and skin this Fall with natural collagen boosting treatments with instant, visible results.
REVIVE YOUR HAIR & BOOST HAIR GROWTH Damage brought on by heat, exposure to chlorine and prolonged exposure to the sun can cause hair to be thin, brittle, dry, and prone to breakage in the Fall. Harness the power of your body’s stem cells to restore vital nutrients, and boost thicker hair regrowth with Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and Growth Factor treatments. Stem cells have proteins with rejuvenating effects,
such as the stimulation of collagen synthesis, triggering the growth of new blood vessels, as well as hair growth stimulating effects after one session. Improve your hair health and increase density with NHL’s regenerative stem cell treatments and medical grade stimulants. NOURISH SKIN & REPLENISH COLLAGEN During the Fall months skin can be starved for moisture, leading to dry skin and the
formation of wrinkles. Give your skin a new start and a healthy glow with our professional aesthetic treatments. Helping to rebuild collagen can benefit skin hydration in people over the age of 30 and slow the formation of deep wrinkles. NHL offers anti-aging aesthetic services to restore skin healthy and vitality. Naturally boost collagen for a non-surgical lift to smooth and firm skin with our High-Performance Facial with Plasma Pen. Maintain a collagen boost for 30 days

THE COOLEST CLIQUE IN TOWN Andrea Notaro and Tony Likaj inspire joy in others by capturing special moments and making memories
As a husband-and-wife team and the owners of locally based Clique Photo Station, Andrea Notaro and Kliton “Tony” Likaj know a thing or two about the passion and dedication it takes to run a business – and raise a family. The duo considers themselves to be in the business of
providing lively and memorable experiences through their professional, open-air photo booths – available for celebrations of all kinds – but times haven’t always easy. Likaj was born and raised in Communist Albania, when the economy was heavily restricted.
So Scottsdale! October ‘19
29
Pulse UP CLOSE “There were many nights I went to bed hungry as a young boy,” he says. “But as little as we had, my parents always found a way to provide for happier times.” Likaj found himself gravitating toward soccer as a way to make a better life from himself, eventually joining FK Tirana football club, the No. 1 club in Albania. “Even with two jobs each, my parents always made the time to see me play,” Likaj says. When his father fell ill in 1989, Likaj gave up his dream to help provide for his family, coming to the U.S. at 30 years old and opening an Italian restaurant in Phoenix with his sister in 2004, the same year that he met Notaro. At the time, Notaro – originally from Long Island – was working at a startup of her father’s in Downtown Phoenix. The two married in 2006 and after their son, James, was born the next year, Notaro left her job to focus on raising him. But in 2009 – just two years before they would welcome their second child, Ashlyn – Likaj was forced to leave the family business and found himself in the same position that his own parents had been in, working two full-time jobs to support his family. After years of Likaj working 16-hour days, five days a week, a stroke of luck came in March 2018 when Likaj and Notaro learned that another couple was looking to sell some of their businesses, and in May of that year, they purchased Clique Photo Station. A major factor behind this decision was the chance to work from home and spend more time together as a family.
The Family Business Today, Notaro considers herself the driving force behind Clique Photo Station, which offers photo booth rentals for any type of occasion, including weddings, birthday parties, and corporate events. Their three elegant photo stations, complete with fun props and backgrounds (the latter can be customized by Notaro), print glossy copies of the photos before the guests even leave the open-air booth. “I’m the one doing the sales, marketing, and day-to-day operations from the moment we book with our clients to execution at an event and the days following,” she says. “Tony helps to fill in the gaps whenever needed. He’s the one that you’ll find out on a job without fail, come rain or shine, attending one of our three fabulous photo booths, always equipped with so much enthusiasm and a true, genuine passion for what he does.” And it’s this shared passion that sets the couple – and their business – apart. “The emphasis we put into nurturing and maintaining our relationships with our clients is a fundamental part of who we are. It doesn’t matter what time it is – it could be 11 o’clock at night, or we could even be on a family vacation, and we will still always find the time to correspond with them,” Notaro says. In addition to their dedication, Clique Photo Station’s all-new Mirror X Booth gives them something especially unique to offer locals. “We are currently the only company in Arizona to have this particular model of booth because of how fresh off the market it is,” Notaro says.

So Scottsdale! October ‘19
The 6-foot-tall, tempered glass mirror combines the fun of a photo booth with technological advancements like interactive animations. “It really is quite the showpiece – almost like a giant iPhone, with an ultra-modern, futuristic design and capabilities that can really knock your socks off,” Notaro says. After experiencing some tough times, Likaj and Notaro reflect on one of the greatest motivators in their lives. “Our children are our inspiration behind everything we do, and the reason behind every important decision we make,” Likaj says. “They give us the drive to want to give 150% all of the time, to work harder and smarter, to take risks but do it responsibly, and to set the best possible example for them that we can.” It’s this love of family that makes Clique unquestionably special. “Clique Photo Station was founded by a couple that was planning their own wedding and wanted something truly original when it came to capturing moments for their special day. When they weren’t able to find anything that met their needs, they decided to create it themselves,” Notaro says. “Every great company has a story to tell, and this one just so happens to be built on the strongest foundation there is – love. The fact that Tony and I get to carry it on and help in its evolution is an honor and privilege.” Clique Photo Station is currently taking bookings for the holidays and beyond. Call 844.425.4783 to book, and learn more at www.cliquephotostation.com.
The Hottest Fall Hair Trends with Color Specialist, Rodney Gentry
“This season, it’s all about blends and natural, warmer tones,” says Rodney Gentry, hair color expert and master stylist. “There is so much you can do with your hair to create just about any look you want.” There’s no surprise that Ombré is extremely popular this fall. It’s a hair coloring trend that doesn’t seem to be wavering; only changing by the season. This fall, the Ombré style uses warmer tones are blended for a subtle, more natural look. Another gorgeous blended color that’s hot this season is Mushroom Blonde. Mushroom Blonde is an ashy mix between blonde and brunette, creating an ashy, gray blonde with dark undertones—think of the color variety on the underside of a mushroom. “It’s excellent for weaving colored pieces around your face to create a subtle and natural change,” says Rodney. This color option is a great way for blondes to spend time on the darker side. Conversely, there is Mushroom Brown for the brunettes who want
to go a little lighter, while creating a multi-dimensional hair color. In this instance, the colors are subtle shades of brown and gray. Copper tones are all the rage as more and more people desire a look of red without the commitment and hassle of keeping up with red hair. Additionally, rooted gold tones are a favorite this season. There’s also a variety of feminine chestnuts and browns. “These colors tend to not fade as much so it’s more low-maintenance,” Rodney explains. For those pesky gray hairs, Rodney reveals that the key to gray coverage is to not cover it 100%. Instead, he prefers to use a neutral color on select pieces to make the grays look highlighted. This way, people don’t have to recolor as often. By doing this technique, it saves the condition of the hair since you’re not covering all of your roots as often. For those of us who lived through the 80’s, you may see familiar-looking accessories making a comeback.
Hair color specialist Rodney Gentry is located in a private studio at Sachi Studios, 10201 N. Scottsdale Rd., Suite 10, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. For an appointment, please call 480.639.2000, or visit www.rodneygentry.com for more information.
Fun-colored bobby pins, bows, and scrunchies are back in style, along with toned-down versions of 80’s hair styles. “You get volume in the body of your hair, with tamer roots,” says Rodney. Rodney takes into account a person’s features, skin tones, and routine when he artistically crafts a new hairstyle. “”The right color will make the right hair cut. Texture with color is the way to go,” he says. Schedule your appointment with Rodney Gentry at Sachi Studios 480.639.2000 or visit www.rodneygentry.com.

Chelsea and Trevor Martin cook up delicious, inventive cookies designed to gift
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
Chelsea and Trevor Martin are the duo behind a sweet operation that can best be described as an online gourmet gifting company specializing in personalized (and edible) gifts for any occasion. The story of Noms Bake Shop (www.getnoms. com) doesn’t begin with any formal culinary training. Instead, the family business, helmed by Chelsea and Trevor, is made up of diverse backgrounds ranging from computer programming to finance and education. “What led us here was an entrepreneurial drive and a passion for bringing something unique to a – sometimes literally – stale market,” Chelsea says. Noticing that gift baskets lacked imagination and fueled by a desire to build something meaningful, Noms was born. Trevor’s father is credited with the original recipes, but the menu has expanded to offer additional and seasonal flavors. Building a brand with their family motivates the Martins to continue to create something that senders can feel great about gifting and that the recipient will enjoy unboxing down to the last crumb. “The fact that just five years ago, this company was just a conversation at the breakfast table and now it’s a fully operational business that makes customers around the nation feel good about gift-giving is mind-blowing,” Chelsea says. What started out in a home kitchen baking cookies for local farmers markets is now an operation with 15,000 square feet of commercial space and an oven that cranks out 500 sweet treats at a time. Although cookies are not something new to the gifting industry, Noms sets the bar high with their quality, convenience (order from home and it’s delivered for you), and stylized delivery. “We believe premium cookies should be showcased in a premium gift box,” Trevor says. “Whether it’s a classic box with a magnetic closure or a deluxe wooden box with a cigar-style top, our giftboxes can be customized with corporate branding or personal messaging that makes the recipient feel special.” Trevor’s favorite cookie is the Chocolate Crinkle, a brownie-like chocolate cookie coated in powdered sugar, while Chelsea opts for the Pumpkin Pie Shortbread cookie this time of year. Even gluten-free and vegan customers have options, and Noms has partnered with Phoenix Children’s Hospital to provide cookies to the families and friends of patients.

SPELLBOUND BY SCOTTSDALE Jason Adler helps to reimagine Old Town’s entertainment district
In 2001, Jason Adler was a newly enlisted member of the U.S. Air Force in the midst of basic training in Texas. “But it wasn’t the regime that exhausted me back then. It was my newfound love: Scottsdale,” Adler says. Almost every weekend, he drove 15 hours to visit his sister, who was attending Arizona State University. Within a year, he put in for a transfer to a local base, where he could serve in a reserve capacity while starting a life here. “I wet my feet in hospitality at the Hyatt in Scottsdale,” says Adler, who worked assorted industry jobs and in homebuilding over the next several years. By 2008, however, both industries were freefalling due to the recession. One of the only bright spots was the then-impending opening of the W Scottsdale hotel. “I took a barback job to get my foot in the door,” Adler says. “It was my turning point.” Adler would soon serve as the resort’s bar manager before being tapped by parent company Spellbound Entertainment Group to open Maya Day + Nightclub in 2013. He then helped open The Dakota, The District and Aloft Scottsdale for the brand over the next two years, earning the role of Spellbound’s director of operations in 2015. “Our vision is to produce experiential entertainment options in Old Town while earning the area a reputation of being a viable, nationally recognized entertainment district,” Adler says. This month, Adler will reinvent Maya Day Club as Clubhouse at Maya, outfitting the space with yard games, flat-screen TVs and cozy seating – not to mention a new menu – to welcome fall and winter crowds. “We beta-tested this vision last year, and now we are ready to officially unleash it,” Adler says of this permanent fall/winter version of Maya (the pool will come back in the summer). Upcoming plans include themed nights, pop-up events, holiday parties, and movie and TV-themed events now through February. By year’s end, Spellbound will also complete the renovation of Shade, the W’s swanky lounge. Facelifts to other spaces will follow. “In coming months, we’ll also break ground on The Edition, a new boutique Scottsdale hotel off Camelback and 73rd Street, and Marquee, commercial office space nearby,” says Adler, who is already eyeing another boutique hotel for the area and preparing to expand the brand into Houston over the next two years.

79,454 REALTORS in the state of Arizona!
LISA LUCKY, just one member of the dynamic Luckys trio, is consistently acknowledged year after year as one of the top Realtors in the Valley, in Arizona and the entire U.S.
RANKED #229 out of 1,359,208 REALTORS in the United States! Rankings, as advertised in The Wall Street Journal, are provided by REAL Trends, Inc. and are based on total sales volume.
As impressive as those rankings are, her only goal is to be RANKED
“My wife and I have bought and sold a lot of real estate in six different states. The Luckys are the best team we have ever worked with by far. Very professional, great marketers, strong understanding of the market in terms of what sells including how and at what price and access to lots of resources to help the process. They managed the process start to finish without much help from us and kept us informed along the way. We are using them again on the purchase of a new home. We would highly recommend them. They way exceeded expectations.” – Barb and John
#1 within the most important grouping:
“They are the best! From the time we interviewed multiple Realtors and choose them over others, it took a week to get the house prepared, pictures taken, and listed. Then it took less than a week with 11 showings to get multiple offers bidding against each other to raise the price to the full listing price and an accepted offer with no contingencies other than an inspection. From offer acceptance to closing about 2 more weeks, the entire process in about a month!!” – JR
“Lisa and her team went above and beyond to facilitate my house sale and closing of escrow. Could not have done it without her. THE BEST. I was ready to give up but she made it happen.” – Marie Ann

Pulse HIS STYLE
ITALIAN INFLUENCES When it comes to style, Marco Garbarino is in a class of his own BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Marco Garbarino’s entrepreneurial spirit, passion for teaching, and love of Italian-made goods help shape his edgy, eclectic style in and out of the classroom as a teacher at Rancho Solano Preparatory School. With 18 years of teaching high school under his designer belt, Garbarino splits his time between the school and serving as the chief financial officer of a private real estate lending company based in San Francisco. “As a teacher, it’s a slight struggle to not be over the top. I want to be myself while staying within the ‘standard uniform guidelines,’” Garbarino says. 7 For All Mankind jeans, a crisp button-down, and Louis Vuitton shoes bring those elements together for a day of teaching advanced economics. Garbarino’s secret to a great outfit? Shoes. “Shoes are the finishing touch as well as the item that distinguishes a gentleman the most,” he says. In fact, Garbarino turns to his alligator leather Empresa Italian shoes for nights out with his wife and two daughters. “Being a fashion-forward family is more fun than a chore,” he says. When he’s not in the classroom, Garbarino rolls his sleeves up to reveal an arm full of tattoos that play to his edgy style. “Style is an expression of the soul and is ever-changing as we evolve as a person. I didn’t get my first tattoo until I was 40!” he says.
What looks do you love? Not love? I like clean lines and mixed elements. In Italy, you always dress clean when you are out, so no sweat pants. Birkenstocks for men? Never. Who would you trade wardrobes with? A combination of George Clooney meets Ryan Reynolds. Classic and stylish but still edgy. What is your No. 1 style tip? Go to a barber regularly to get a haircut and professional shave, or have your beard trimmed and shaped. Keep your hairline clean and groomed.

Pulse HER STYLE
FUNCTIONAL FASHION
From her outfits to her patients, feeling good is the name of the game for Jasreen Stortz
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Jasreen Stortz shapes her style around the two most important things in her life: motherhood and her career as a chiropractor. Owning four practices in the Valley, Stortz is constantly pulled in different directions and maintains a wardrobe that is as flexible as some of her patients. Weekends call for athleisure wear and workdays call for jeans with a trendy top and some fun, flat shoes for style and comfort. A firm believer in having her wardrobe play a pivotal role in defining her reputation, she says, “Your first impression is how others will continue to perceive you and the work you do.” While the chiropractic industry isn’t known for high fashion, don’t expect that to stop Stortz from taking risks with trends like snakeskin and cheetah prints. “I love fashion so I find myself looking through magazines and Pinterest to see what is currently in,” she says. Sarah Jessica Parker’s creative and mixed pattern looks inspire Stortz, and these are two aesthetics she applies to her outfit whenever she leaves the house. “I love to dress up, whether I’m going to run a couple of errands or going to work,” Stortz says. “It makes me feel good, and I think we all function well when we look and feel good.”
What are your favorite trends? I am a huge fan of leather, floral, lace and plaid. Pink is my favorite color. I love how designers are incorporating pink this fall as well. What is the most prized possession in your closet? My Chanel purse because it was my push present after having my daughter. It’s the type of purse I can go out with, wear to work, and use daily. How do you transition from work to nighttime? I put on a pair of trendy heels or boots and grab a smaller purse, which can instantly elevate your entire look for nighttime.

THE FAIRY GODMOTHER OF FASHION AND BOOB WHISPERER
S
Scylvia-Elvira Danese of Danese Creations
cylvia-Elvira Danese, owner of Danese Creations, has been in business since 1971. Through her gift of custom designing, men and women can get all their custom designing, tailoring, alterations, bridal wear and all accessories, fabric, jewelry and the best fitting bra. “I’m a 3rd generation Custom Designer/Tailor in my family, I follow My Mother Maria and Grandmother Chapita,” said Danese. “My designs have made it to the Emmys, The Country Music Awards, the Oscars, the White House, The Oprah show, I’ve also been featured on First Edition, total Divas, all the local TV channels. It’s been an amazing ride for these last 47 years!” While Danese is proud of the accolades and the high profile clients that have graced her designs, some of her fondest memories are the ones that have changed the lives of others. “I saved a brides wedding day by making a beautiful, custom
wedding gown from scratch, on the day of the wedding, in 2 hours and 50 minutes, that is how I got dubbed “the Fairy Godmother Of Fashion”, she explains. “I’m also called “The Boob Whisperer” for the expert bra fittings that I do. Your boobs can either make you or break you. If they look good, you look good and feel good, sexy, young, (even if you’re old) thin, (even if you’re heavy), and your clothes fit well.” Danese is committed to helping every man or woman find their perfect fit, in addition women can get a free bra fitting. Clients need to set an appointment with her shop, and with zero obligations to purchase bras from her. “Most women just don’t know what a bra is supposed to do, how a bra is supposed to fit, how a bra has been designed, or what bra size is right for them. Industry estimates are that anywhere from 70 to 80 perfect of women are wearing the wrong size bra, although in my opinion, informed by more than 47
years of experience, it’s more like 90 percent. And there’s been no reliable source for women to go to and find out the truth about bras, bra measuring and bra sizing, until now.” If clients are not in the market for custom designing, you will find original Danese Creations designs, ready-to-wear one of a kind bridal gowns, mother of the bride or groom gowns, evening gowns, cocktail dresses, skirts, blouses, and more. Danese Creations prides themselves on being able to make custom garments from a picture or a drawing or an idea and she can do this all without requiring the client to be local. Above all, Danese has one goal for her shop “To do the impossible to get to solve all the sewing problems that come my way. My motto that I got from my Father Giacomo Danese is “Nothing is Impossible, Difficult but not Impossible”, she explains. “We never say no, it’s always yes we can, just say when!”

Natalie Grancharov Camacho returns to the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships for the ninth year BY BRITTANY MARONEY / PHOTOS BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
So Scottsdale! October ‘19
45
Perched atop of Saint, her gorgeous Champagne paint pony, Natalie Grancharov Camacho is a sight to behold. With just the right balance of grace and experience, she flies across the grassy field, mallet in hand, flanked by her fellow equestrians. At the sound of a thump, the small, hard ball soars to her left. And the chase is on. Unlike many of her fellow players, Grancharov wasn’t born into the world of polo. As a child growing up in California, she filled her shelves with horse figurines and her bed with stuffed ponies. It was this small child’s dream to ride horses – not as a princess, but as an athlete. Brought up far away from the countryside, it wasn’t until she attended University of California, Davis that she actually lived out this dream. There, she was introduced to the local polo club and had her first experience with the sport. “The incredible thing about your first time playing polo is that almost everyone describes it with the same awe and satisfaction,” Grancharov says. “It’s like we all share the same experience. There’s a magic to being on a horse, soaring across the field, and that feeling as you make contact with the ball for the first time. I can only describe it as a moment of true bliss and happiness. And then you want more. You want to play more, practice more.” After that day, Grancharov would go on to become quite the equestrian, not only joining the local polo club but also delving into the world of hunter jumping and equitation. Polo would later introduce Grancharov to her husband and a move to Scottsdale would precede her welcome into the prestigious Arizona Polo Club. In both instances, it was love at first sight. “Here in Scottsdale, polo has truly made a family for me,” Grancharov says. “My husband is a fifth-generation polo player from Colombia and we met on the polo field, just like his parents did. Now we have eight horses together, and we play almost every weekend with family and friends. It’s our shared hobby and a way to enjoy time with the people we love.” These bouts rarely become truly competitive. Normally, the friendly matches end in relaxing backyard barbecues, but that changes during one very special weekend each year. The Ninth Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships (also
46
So Scottsdale! October ‘19
known as The Polo Party), taking place Nov. 2 at WestWorld of Scottsdale, will mark Grancharov’s ninth year competing alongside her polo team and numerous polo all-stars, including world-renowned polo player Nacho Figueras and Melissa Ganzi, the owner of the Aspen Valley Polo Team and Grand Champions Polo Club. This year’s featured match brings the reigning champions, the Aspen Valley Polo Team, back to the desert to take on the Royal County Berkshire Polo Club, which is making its first appearance in Arizona (and whose first member was Prince Charles). There will also be the first-ever charity match featuring Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center and Arizona Equine Rescue Organization. Plus, there will be a military match-up between the Airforce and Marines, and the Centtrip Wales Polo Team will take on Grancharov’s team, the Arizona Polo Club. Of course, the action-packed event will
also feature fan-favorite activities like The Canine Couture Dog Fashion Show, The World’s “Longest” Catwalk Fashion Show presented by Phoenix Fashion Week, a preview of the 2020 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, and halftime performances by the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. And no event would be complete without some incredible musical productions. Performances will include the Phoenix Symphony’s top oboe player; a “hip-hopera” performed by hip-hop artist Ali Tomineek and the Phoenix Opera; an acoustic guitar showcase in the Sanderson Lincoln Black Label Lounge; and new songs from Americano!, Arizona’s most intriguing new musical debuting in 2020. It’s an event like none other and Grancharov has been instrumental in its growth for close to a decade. “Natalie has become the First Lady of Arizona Polo through a passion for the
sport and a desire to see the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships become the extraordinarily special event it is,” says Jason Rose, co-founder of The Polo Party. “Because of her contacts and creativity, Natalie has helped bring gender equality and diversity to the Scottsdale Polo Party in a way that few, if any, major polo events can match. Simply put, we would not be where we are without her.”
A Sport for Everyone
For Grancharov, polo is truly about fair matches and an even playing field. This is more than a passion to her; it is what makes the sport truly unique. “Polo is one of the few sports where men and women play alongside each other and are evenly matched. We are even graded on the same handicap,” Grancharov says. “No other sport compares, and I think there is a beauty and a trueness in that fact.” Even in the face of stereotypes, Grancharov is a fierce defender of polo, insisting that the family-friendly sport has the potential to bring people from all backgrounds together. “I understand that polo is always going to have a stigma of Champagne and caviar,” Grancharov says. “But the real truth of the matter is it’s just plain fun; there is a draw to it. To some it’s about the fancy dresses and big hats, but the other part is just normal people relaxing after a match, enjoying one another’s company and barbecuing. We are not royalty – we’re just a group of family and friends spending time together.” Grancharov is not shy about her excitement to return to The Polo Party. In fact, one of her favorite reasons to go is that she gets to talk directly to polo novices and share her love for the sport. A small goal of hers? To inspire other women of any age to join the ranks. “It’s an amazing thing to see first-timers fall in love with polo,” Grancharov says. “And it is so much fun to chat with spectators along the sideline. I always like to remind everyone that polo is a sport for any age, any gender and all backgrounds. We can all share the joy and adrenaline that a match can bring. And let’s face it, there is nothing greater than spending your day on a horse.” To learn more about the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships and purchase tickets, visit www.thepoloparty.com.

JENNIFER PAIGE BOONLORN SOUL CARRIER Tell us about Soul Carrier. Soul Carrier is a fashion accessories company with a goal of bringing beautiful objects to life. We want you to follow your soul and to be authentic as you carry our products. Describe your brand in three words. Soulful, graceful and sophisticated. What is the inspiration behind it? A love of creating, designing, and wanting to put products out into the world that could spark conversations around alignment, authenticity, and having a true north. How did you get into design? I graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York City, then spent time at Oscar de la Renta and Women’s Wear Daily and designed products for Henri Bendel before doing an art project for Barneys that sparked the idea for Soul Carrier. What designer do you look up to the most? The team of creatives behind Alice + Olivia and Chloe. And I have mad respect for Jolie Andreatta – she was the costume designer behind the TV show Suits. The cast’s wardrobe was on point! What’s been your greatest achievement? In college, I lost both my parents in a tire blow accident. And then I lost a best friend to suicide. Learning how to walk through the fire and find the tenacity to thrive again is my greatest achievement. Your greatest challenge? My greatest challenge is learning to say “no” so that I can say “yes” to the projects, people and goals that truly matter to me. Putting the ideologies of essentialism into practice is something I must work on every day. What advice would you give to an aspiring designer? Start! You will modify and tweak your business so many times. It’s better to edit along the way versus being a perfectionist and never starting. Listen to podcasts and read – there is so much free mentorship out there! BART WALKER JACK GRACE USA Tell us about Jack Grace. Jack Grace was developed to support an invention I created on my kitchen table with my wife’s kitchen shears and a handful of old golf shoes. I wanted to create a premium golf shoe that allows people to express their individual styles in a fun way never before seen on the golf course. Golf shoes are often boring; our interchangeable saddles allow you to coordinate your shoes to your outfit so that your shoes are continually customizable. Describe your brand in three words. Innovative, premium and fun. What is the inspiration behind it? Inspiration for the name Jack Grace came from my son, Jack, and daughter, Grace. Our latest addition, baby Henry (born December 2018) showed up a little late. We’ll have to find a way to make it right down the road. How did you get into design? I don’t have any formal design training, but I’ve always loved shoes. As a kid, when I’d get a new pair I’d place them on my dresser and study them as I laid in bed. I suppose that fascination and attention to detail has served me well in this new endeavor. What designer do you look up to the most? Easy, the greatest of all time … Ralph Lauren. What’s been your greatest achievement? Aside from being a father to my kids, I’d say having so many happy customers. It’s pretty neat to have high-profile organizations like the PGA Tour, Arnold Palmer Enterprises, and some professional sports teams as customers. Not long ago, I was a banker with a crazy idea to chop up old shoes on our kitchen table. To have this level of acceptance this soon is pretty awesome. Your greatest challenge? Managing my high expectations and patience in general. What advice would you give to an aspiring designer? Be decisive even if it means that sometimes you’ll be wrong. JADE MCCLENDON STUDIO BB DESIGNS Tell us about Studio BB Designs. We are a mother-and-daughter duo that has turned our passion for jewelry, creativity and connecting with women into a business. We absolutely love what we do and feel like that shines through in our pieces. Our glass art starts with a single rod of glass and is melted freehand into one-of-a-kind wearable jewelry. Describe your brand in three words. Handmade, legacy and unique. What is the inspiration behind it? Our brand was born from two of our biggest passions: The desire to create incredible, one-of-a-kind artistic pieces and our love for seeing women feel beautiful. Once we began to see our pieces showcased on their arms, marrying our art and connecting with these women was such a special thing. How did you get into design? I have always loved jewelry, stringing beads and creating. We heard about a glass (lampwork) bead-making class and have been hooked ever since. We love that the ideas are endless; being able to escape into a creative outlet is such a gift. What designer do you look up to the most? My mother. She has incredible style and knows exactly who she is. What’s been your greatest achievement? There have been so many rewarding milestones along the way. However, if I’m honest, it’s the loyal fan base that we have established. That’s what challenges us to create new pieces, constantly evolve with our designs, and grow as artists. Our art resonates with so many women across generations. Your greatest challenge? Like any working mom, the biggest challenge is finding a healthy balance between creating in the studio and family. What advice would you give to an aspiring designer? Love what you do. If you can’t stop thinking about it, do it! Find a way and don’t look back! Find products online at www. studiobbdesigns.com.

AMBER ANDERSON FLOWER POWER CLOTHING Tell us about Flower Power Clothing. Flower Power is all about modern vintage apparel for the dreamers. We want to encourage people to live and love a little bit more. If we all do that, we can make the world a better place. Describe your brand in three words. Fun, chic and vintage. What is the inspiration behind it? I love music and movies – especially those from the ’60s and ’70s – and that’s where I draw most of my inspiration. The brand was inspired by the Flower Power movement. I wanted to take a modern approach and empower people to live and love a little bit more. How did you get into design? I’ve always had a passion for fashion. My grandma had a passion for it, and I think that influenced me. When I was young, she tried teaching me how to sew, but at the time, I didn’t really have an interest or appreciation for it. I eventually started designing when I ran an online boutique. I was very picky and didn’t really like my options, so I started looking into designing my own clothes. What designer do you look up to the most? Ralph Lauren inspires me the most. His career journey and creative process have really helped shape my vision for this brand. What’s been your greatest achievement? I had the honor to dress Natasha Castles of Live 101.5 for her TEDx Talk. Your greatest challenge? Being self-taught. I didn’t have someone there to tell me what I was doing right or wrong. My biggest design obstacle was trying to get the perfect fit. It was a very long trial-and-error process! What advice would you give to an aspiring designer? Work hard and never give up. Find products online at www. loveflowerpower.com and at Phoenix Fashion Week this month.

SEBASTIAN SANDERSIUS EZRA ARTHUR Tell us about Ezra Arthur. Ezra Arthur is owned by myself and my three brothers, honoring our grandfather’s name by crafting lifestyle accessories worthy of everything he stood for. By sourcing only the finest American materials – such as the highest quality leathers – and handcrafting each item, we hope to restore value in goods designed for life. Describe your brand in three words. Heirloom, quality and Americana. What is the inspiration behind it? We sought to combine modern engineering with century-old practices to handcraft dependable keepsakes that look great and last a long time. At the height of the economic downturn, skilled trades and first-rate manufacturing methods were abandoned. We wanted to save this crucial component of American manufacturing by building our own facility in the heart of Phoenix’s waning warehouse district. How did you get into design? I got into design toward the end of 2010. I was finishing my Ph.D. in physics, and I became very interested in design while I was on a trip to Brussels. I had been to most European capitals, but there was something about Brussels that inspired me to get into design. I really appreciated the fashion and culture of the city. What designer do you look up to the most? I have always admired the work of Hugo Boss. What’s been your greatest achievement? Knowing that I haven’t yet achieved my greatest achievement. Your greatest challenge? Finding great people to work with. What advice would you give to an aspiring designer? Study mathematics. You will be more powerful if you can speak both the languages of engineering and design. Find products online at www.ezraarthur. com and at select stores worldwide.

Charles has an eye for up-and-coming trends and uses that to his advantage, being the first to introduce new ideas to the Valley. One such trend Glo Medspa incorporates is a brand new device called Trusculpt ID. It is hands down amazing for killing fat and tightening the skin at the same time. The best part is, Trusculpt ID is only 1 treatment that is 15 minutes long and has permanent results. “I strongly believe this will be replacing old technology, such as Coolsculpting.” Contact Glo Medspa at 480.245.6881 or www.glomedspas.com. 6990 East Shea Boulevard, Suite #218, Scottsdale, AZ 85254.

FEEL CONFIDENT THE NATURAL WAY At Desert Holistic Health, less is more natural For natural-looking results, Desert Holistic Health is the med spa to visit. “We promise to keep you looking great and like you,” says owner Megan Davies, MSN, FNP-BC. Clients can expect a personalized experience when they visit Desert Holistic Health. The med spa staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and above all cherishes each one of their clients. “I first spend time understanding my client’s goals and then take time to go over a plan so they can make an informed decision about what path they’d like to take. I want my clients to be happy and feel confident when they look in the mirror.” Megan says. Free consultations are offered to discuss fears a client may have about looking unnatural. It is no wonder that Desert Holistic Health has an excellent reputation for fixing subpar work from other med spas, and frequently receives referrals for more complicated cases. The staff is experienced with everything regarding injectables. In fact, Megan is one of the top injectors of Xeomin in Arizona, as well as is an expert in many advanced injection techniques and overall facial rejuvenation. She believes in going slow and adding more treatments down the road, if needed. For those who do not want to go under the knife but want to combat sagging skin, Desert Holistic Health offers non-surgical lifting and skin tightening services with Ultherapy. “Ultherapy is great because, unlike many other procedures where you have to keep coming back, this procedure requires only one treatment
and lasts 18 months,” Megan explains. Megan has worked in the Nursing field for over 15 years, and earned her Master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2014. She is board certified in Family Practice. In 2017, Megan was nominated as a Realself Top Injector and, in 2018, won the Best of Arizona Business Award in the categories of Weight Loss, Hormone Replacement, and Cosmetic Treatments. SAY GOODBYE TO FAT And hello to healthy at Arizona Aesthetics When exercise and diet alone are not shrinking those unshakeable love handles, Arizona Aesthetics is the Valley’s place to go for non-surgical body contouring treatments, one of which is Coolsculpting. Even post-pregnant women are finding this advanced technology an excellent way to tighten their bodies, with results being seen after only one treatment. During a one-on-one consultation, a highly skilled member of Arizona Aesthetics works with the client to provide a customized treatment plan. “We provide the absolute best service,” says owner Erik Borchardt, making it easy to understand why the med spa’s motto is to treat every client like they are family. This comes natural for Erik, since his family members are also clients of Arizona Aesthetics. Arizona Aesthetics differs from other med spas in that they are a specialized med spa, offering fewer treatment specialties. This niche allows the staff to be the absolute best at what they do. “We aren’t the biggest med spa, but we are more customized and we’re experts at what we do,” Erik says. The staff is not only passionate about their work, they are the best in the cosmetics field with each having a minimum of three to four years experience before coming to Arizona Aesthetics. In addition, Arizona Aesthetics is a Coolsculpting certified practice, and each technician has at least six years experience in Coolsculpting technology. All of the technicians at Arizona Aesthetics are highly trained and certified directly from
the Coolsculpting University. Arizona Aesthetics is a Club 1,000 member, an honor that is earned after having performed 1,000 Coolsculpting treatments. For the last four years, Arizona Aesthetics is proud to have donated services to be auctioned for Driving Out Domestic Violence. Arizona Aesthetics was one of the first to perform stem cell hair restoration, and has made it one of their specialties. Other cosmetic treatments with stem cells include facial rejuvenation and erectile dysfunction. The practice’s injection expert—Erik Wagner, FNP-BC—has advanced training for injectables that include PRP, Amnion, Stem Cell, and for the extremities: knees, shoulders, hips, and spine. Clients are assessed and treated on a individual basis, so they are guaranteed a personalized approach to target specific areas of their body. The staff at Arizona Aesthetics is very professional, extremely knowledgeable, and energetic. “I’m passionate about making people feel better about themselves, and helping them feel better about their bodies.” Being a specialized med spa allows Arizona Aesthetics to offer all-around superior service to their clients. “I love getting up every day and coming to the office. I don’t view it as work. Interacting one-on-one with clients is my favorite part,” Erik says. With over 30 years of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgical experience, Dr Wolin and his staff not only Talk the Talk… they also Walk the Walk. Listen to what his patients have to say about their care and surgical results… (Verified independent interview) Just a few months ago I got a good closeup view of my lips in the mirror. I was horrified. How could I possibly have gotten so many wrinkles in not only my lips but also in the areas surrounding my mouth? I never even smoked cigarettes..I immediately decided that I would try and remedy the situation. I went to a local spa where I was told that a temporary filler combined with a standard skin peel would solve my problems. After undergoing multiple injections, it was evident that the solution to my problem not in a little jar of magical potions nor in a minuscule injection of temporary filler. The problem could only be solved by a combination of permanent volumizing as well as resurfacing my skin. I had heard of Dr wolin and his greater than 25 year experience using Fat Transfer techniques to revolumize and smooth wrinkles around the mouth. I also found that he was using a fantastic chemical peel resurfacing technique called “ The Croton Oil Peel” which produced amazing smoothing of the skin without the downtime associated with Laser Resurfacing. In just 45 minutes, under local anesthesia, I have been able to reclaim my deflated and wrinkled mouth…My results were amazing…natural and permanent.

The Taste of Cave Creek celebrates 27 years of Cave Creek’s culinary community
BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE
Outdoor shopping district Stagecoach Village will set the scene yet again for the highly anticipated Taste of Cave Creek – an annual event that celebrates the Cave Creek community and the food it dishes out. “Every year we look forward to this great event,” says longtime event chair and Cave Creek town marshal Adam Stein. “I think my favorite part is seeing all our friends and neighbors coming out and enjoying our awesome local restaurants.” For 27 years, The Taste of Cave Creek has welcomed attendees from near and far to enjoy two days of live entertainment and food and drink samples from more than 30 local restaurants. From barbecue to seafood to hand-churned ice cream, a variety of cuisines are accounted for at this beloved community gathering. Featured restaurants will include Tonto Bar & Grill, Indigo Crow Restaurant & Bar, Corrado’s Cucina Italiana, Cartwright’s Sonoran Ranch House, and Harold’s Cave Creek Corral. Attendees can wash down their culinary delights at the event’s Craft Beer Garden, where samples from Huss Brewing Co. and SanTan Brewing Company can be enjoyed alongside other esteemed brands. Wine and spirit tastings will be available, too, with Frankly Organic Vodka being this year’s newest addition. As such, participating restaurants will duke it out in a mixology competition where they must create a cocktail using one of Frankly Organic Vodka’s five flavors. This year’s event is expected to have more than 8,000 people, marking a new record for the event. Guests are advised to come early as there is no on-site parking (except for a handful of handicapped-accessible parking). Attendees will park offsite and take the event’s shuttle buses to and from Stagecoach Village. “You can come out, have fun, enjoy the food and just relax,” Stein says. “Everyone’s a neighbor of Cave Creek – there are no strangers here.”

Not only are receding gums painful and unattractive, but the actual bone underneath is being lost, leading to tooth loss. The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a revolutionary procedure that solves the problem of receding gums. PST offers natural-looking, long-lasting healthy smiles to those suffering from receded gums, giving patients a beautiful new smile in as little as an hour. Since nothing more than local anesthesia is needed, patients can return to work after their appointment. The Pinhole Surgical Technique takes the place of traditional gum grafts, with minimal discomfort or pain. In fact, recovery time is virtually nonexistent with PST. The results are more predictable, less notice-
BEFORE
AFTER able, and will last as long as any other gum correction procedure. Stunning new smiles can be seen immediately. Dr. Erik Svans, DDS was among the first dentists to study the Pinhole Surgical Technique under its inventor, Dr. John C. Chao, DDS in 2014. Since introducing PST to his practice, Dr. Svans has seen very predictable and reliable long-term results. There is no scalpel, incision, or stitches with PST, making it virtually painfree. This innovative procedure uses a .1 inch “pinhole” opening to reposition a patient’s receded gumline to its healthy, natural location. After repositioning the gum tissue to cover the exposed root surface, Dr. Svans strategically places collagen through the Pinhole to stabilize the tissue in place. The collagen resets the gum tissue and makes it stronger than before. Patients can return to normal eating that very night. Previously, treatment for receded
gumlines was very painful and required cutting donor gum tissue from the roof of a patient’s mouth. The donor tissue was then stitched to the receded site, which had also been cut or “flapped” in preparation for the graft. Recovery for this traditional surgical technique requires two to three weeks with prescription pain medicine. In contrast, PST is a kinder, gentler procedure since it only requires a repositioning of existing gum tissue over the exposed root surface. With PST, Dr. Svans can treat one to all teeth in one visit, in as little as 30 minutes. Patients are amazed with the results, instantly falling in love with their healthy, beautiful new smiles. If you’re ready to stop living with the pain and embarrassment of recessed gums, the Pinhole Surgical Technique may be right for you! Schedule a complimentary consultation by calling Dr. Erik Svans at 480.219.8760 or visit www.PinholeAZ.com.

STAIRWAY TO COCKTAIL HEAVEN Cheers to Scottsdale’s best rooftop bars
Looking for a new perspective (literally) when it comes to happy hour or a night out on the town? Try these great Scottsdale rooftop bars and clubs that are well worth the climb.
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
The Grapevine At nearly 50 years old, The Grapevine is not only the granddaddy of rooftop bars in Scottsdale, but the granddaddy of most bars in the area, period. Located in the heart of Old Town, The Grapevine’s upstairs bar has a massive patio covered with bright red umbrellas that provide colorful shade on sunny days and strung-up lights that illuminate the space at night. Its award-winning margaritas, beer, wine and sneaky good Mediterranean fare make it the perfect place to relax now that the 100-degree (and higher) days are behind us. www.grapevineaz.com. Degree 270 Named for the cactus-dotted, mountain-lined, city-lit views that are unique to the Valley of the Sun, Talking Stick Resort’s 14th floor nightclub is Scottsdale-meets-Vegas every Friday and Saturday night. Both nights, DJs spin electronic, pop, hip-hop and house music while guests party on the ample dance floor. In addition to cocktails featuring top-shelf spirits, the wine menu boasts dozens of award-winning varietals and there are plenty of beer options from which to choose. www.talkingstickresort.com. Balcony Bar Opened earlier this year, this 1,800-square-foot Old Town Scottsdale patio bar and lounge is on the second floor of Social Tap Eatery but meant to serve as a completely different concept. While Social Tap has more of a party atmosphere with a focus on craft beer and scratch-made comfort food, Balcony Bar provides a date night vibe with plush lounge chairs, an impressive wine menu, its own DJ booth, and a cozy fireplace. Balcony Bar is also available to rent for private events and parties. www.socialtapeatery.com. Onyx Bar & Lounge There are million-dollar views, and then there are the views from Onyx, which are priceless. Located at the base of Pinnacle Peak Mountain and looking southward from North Scottsdale so the entire city is within view, this indoor-outdoor second-floor bar at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale has the service and sophistication one would expect from the Four Seasons brand, yet a personality all its own. Barrel-aged spirits and locally sourced cocktails are always on the menu as well as small plates ranging from oysters on the half shell and hamachi crudo to brisket burgers and flatbreads. And don’t miss dessert! www.fourseasons.com. Rockbar As the name suggests, Rockbar shies away from traditional club music and instead focuses on all things rock ‘n’ roll. Featuring live bands and DJs spinning everything from The Rolling Stones to Metallica, during the fall months guests flock to the upstairs portion of the bar that is open-air and laid-back with good beer and great pizzas and sandwiches. With ample flat-screens, Rockbar also serves as the official bar for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Philadelphia Eagles during football season. www.rockbarscottsdale.com.

FALL FUN
Attractions and activities abound in autumn
Break out the candy corn and apple cider because it is finally fall! When not enjoying the perfect weather and football being back in action, here are some great attractions and seasonal events taking place this month.
Scottstoberfest Scottsdale’s first Oktoberfest will take place Oct. 5 from noon to 5 p.m. at Scottsdale Fashion Square’s events area located on the north side of the mall. The 21-and-over event, which costs $5 to enter (food and beverage purchases are additional), will feature food trucks serving German dishes, Samuel Adams Oktoberfest beer, games, a cornhole tournament, stein hoisting competitions, and entertainment. www.facebook.com/scottstoberfest. Pumpkin & Chili Party As the family-owned Schnepf Farms’ biggest event of the year, the Pumpkin & Chili Party is held every Thursday through Sunday in October. Admission starts at $20 per person, and children under age two are no charge. Currently, there are discounted tickets available at Fry’s Food Stores. Activities include pumpkin picking, amusement rides, hayrides, a BMX show, bonfires, marshmallow roasting, corn mazes, pig races, mini golf, and a dog show. Yes, it is in Queen Creek, but well worth the drive. www.schnepffarms.com.

Arizona Fall League Regarded throughout professional baseball as the “finishing school” for top prospects since its inception in 1992, this six-team league features elite young players from every MLB Club. Through late October, the Arizona Fall League will play three games per day, six days a week. Daily start times are 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The league’s 14th annual Fall Stars Game will take place Oct. 12, and its championship game will take place Oct. 26, both at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. Tickets start at $7. Ages 15 and under are free. www.azfallleague.com.

Spooktacular Hot Air Balloon Festival On Oct. 25 and 26 from 5 to 9:30 p.m., Salt River Fields at Talking Stick will once again host its family-friendly Spooktacular Hot Air Balloon Festival, which costs $15 for adults, $10 for children ages three to 12, and is free for children under three. During the event, expect more than 4,000 pounds of candy to be passed out to trick-or-treaters, live music, food and beverages for purchase, a kids zone, tethered hot air balloon rides (additional cost), a hot air balloon glow, fireworks, and much more. www.azspooktacular.com. Haunted Graveyard Arizona A Scottsdale tradition since 1986, this free event (with an optional $5 donation suggested) will take place Oct. 27 to 31 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. And yes, it is in an actual Scottsdale neighborhood near Granite Reef Road and McDonald Drive. Every year, local DJ Chris Birkett converts his five-bedroom home into a combination haunted house and spooky graveyard with impressive production value. And given it is more along the lines of Disney’s Haunted Mansion than A Nightmare on Elm Street, it’s both date night-approved and kidfriendly. www.hauntedgraveyardaz.com.

MEET DR. CHRIS SERAFINI, DC: OFFERING A NEW APPROACH TO TREATING PAIN By the time a patient comes to me at Valley Spinal Care-Kierland, often they've already seen other specialists—medical doctors, neurologists, other chiropractors. They've tried numerous other methods, treatments, and medicines. Some patients admitted that I was their last hope for pain relief. I've had so many great success stories from patients suffering from headaches and migraines, neck pain, back pain, and even pain in the extremities like the knees and shoulders. These successes are due to the holistic approach I take to your health no matter the underlying cause. I treat you as a whole individual, not simply targeting the pain area. Early on in my practice, I was getting good results for my patients, but something seemed to be missing. I didn't feel like I was seeing enough improvement with some of my patients. I sought out the top chiropractors in the US, so that I could learn from them. In doing so, I learned techniques they were using and getting great results with. I incorporated these new techniques that have proven to be successful into my practice at Valley Spinal Care-Kierland. I can now say with confidence that I offer a diverse number of treatment options that are hard to find anywhere else. These additional techniques I offer truly have helped patients become pain-free. I can honestly say that I'm getting amazing results that I can be proud of, because these results give my patients a better quality of life. They have less pain, they're happier, they are overall healthier, and that makes me extremely happy to witness. My techniques are all nonsurgical and drug-free. I go beyond the surface pain to find the root cause with holistic and noninvasive solutions. I have a figurative treasure box of various techniques that I reach into when I see a new patient. Every patient is unique, their bodies are individual, so I
create a personalized treatment plan based on the specific needs of each person. My techniques include the Gonstead Technique, a type of highly focused manual adjustment, as well as Fascia Work, Dry Needling, Laser Therapy, Spinal Decompression, Spinal Rehab, and BrainTap. We also have a physical medicine & therapeutic procedures room to offer a full range of chiropractic and wellness options. I've created a healing environment to promote a comfortable yet effective setting. I surround myself with friendly, intelligent, passionate, like-minded staff, and we are all in agreement that our patients are like family to us. We care for our family and want to help them live their life pain-free. Whether you are suffering from headaches, migraines, or pain in your neck, back, or joints, I would love the opportunity to help you feel better and live your best-quality life! MAKING MUSIC Meet local musician and songwriter Steve Ayotte
BY HEATHER LYNN HORVAT / PHOTOS BY O’SHEA TOMETI
Local musician and songwriter Steve Ayotte has music in his soul. A full-time musician for the last seven years – playing guitar and drums, singing and writing music – Ayotte has played music his entire life, dabbling in piano as a child, singing in church choir, perfecting his vocals in voice lessons, and playing trumpet from elementary school into college. In fact, he’s been friends with his bassist since middle school, where they played trumpet together in the school band. While on tour with his former rock band, Idle Red, in 2005, Ayotte felt a spark that kicked his music career into motion. At that time, he realized that playing music – and touching lives – was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. “The biggest reason I’ve continued to pursue a career as a professional musician is that it allows me the opportunity to meet new and interesting people every single day.” Ayotte specializes in original remixes of popular songs from all genres and eras, while also writing and performing his own music. He blends folk, soul, pop, classic rock, R&B, and country into his remixes and original songs – and his sound has been described as a diverse blend of these genres. While his process for writing is different with each song, he normally begins with a groove and builds a song around that. “That’s how I create all of my remixes and covers, so it makes sense that my originals are written the same kind of way.” Ayotte has opened for major artists, including The Beach Boys, Maroon 5, The Chainsmokers and Enrique Iglesias, but also plays at smaller club venues and special events, such as weddings and company parties. Depending on the gig, Ayotte performs solo, as a duo, or with his full band: Steve Ayotte & The Get Down. “The smaller clubs are some of my favorite places because the show is different every single night. I vibe off the energy in a room and play songs that I feel fit that energy.” Recently, Ayotte launched a fully customizable online booking service, Ayotte Music & Entertainment, with plans to continue to expand it. The service is built on a foundation of collaboration. “Rather than compete with fellow musicians for gigs, why not create a service that connects each of us with aligned opportunities?” he says of the service, which plays into one of his goals as a musician: helping other artists kick-start their careers. At the heart of his work, Ayotte hopes to make an impact on those who hear his music. “I want to make music that makes people move and feel moved,” he says. See Ayotte perform every other Wednesday at Kelly’s at Southbridge, every other Friday at Blue Martini, every other Saturday night at W Scottsdale, and during brunch every Saturday at SumoMaya and every Sunday at Local Bistro. 2020 LINCOLN AVIATOR This all-new luxury SUV is set to soar BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS: 2020 Lincoln Aviator Base price: $51,100
The Lincoln Aviator is an all-new, three-row luxury SUV positioned between the larger Navigator and the smaller Nautilus. The Aviator name was previously used from 2002 to 2005 when Lincoln gussied up a Ford Explorer to look like a Navigator, but the vehicle never caught on. For 2020, Lincoln is bringing back the Aviator, this time taking styling cues from the Lincoln Continental and Navigator. Its upright grille and graceful, tapered body create an aeronautic feel that’s clean, simple and gorgeous. The Aviator offers seating for seven, or six if it’s equipped with second-row captain’s chairs. The Perfect Position 30-way power-adjustable and massaging seats are inspired by the Navigator and upholstered with supple leather. The inspiration for the interior comes from Lincoln’s Black Label, with colors like cashmere, luggage tan, or mahogany red, with khaya wood surfaces and quilted leather seating. Machined and brushed aluminum appliques add upscale accents. State-of-the-art technology includes the Revel audio system with 28 speakers, a standard 12.3-inch touch screen, and air glide suspension that lowers the height of the vehicle as the driver

approaches, making it easier to get in or load gear. In addition, a smartphone can act as a key, unlocking the doors, opening the rear liftgate, or starting the engine through the Lincoln Way app. Road Preview uses a camera to spot potholes or uneven surfaces, adjusting the suspension accordingly. The Aviator is available in five trim levels. The vehicle tested here was the mid-level all-wheel drive Reserve, powered by a twin-turbocharged, 400-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Touring trim includes the same 3.0-liter V-6, but adds a plug-in hybrid feature that enables roughly 18 miles of electric-only driving. Delivering 494 horsepower and a massive 630 pound-feet of torque, it’s the most powerful engine ever offered in a Lincoln product. Even with its base engine, the Aviator is noticeably quick. On the road, it is extremely quiet, capable, confident and substantial, handling road conditions and corners with aplomb. Lincoln has spent a tremendous amount of time, effort and money on the new Aviator. With its combination of luxury, technology and attention to detail, it easily earns two thumbs up.

This 7,913-square-foot home, situated in a secluded enclave near Paradise Valley’s Mummy Mountain, boasts seven bedrooms, 6 1/2 bathrooms, and a charming Spanish colonial design that has almost as much wow factor as the corner lot it rests on. Upon entering through the towering porte cochere, hand-carved Cantera stone details immediately stun. Through sweeping, detailed arches waits an elegant parlor and a great room with further stone sculpture work adorning the walls, moldings, and built-in fireplace. The telescoping doors sweep you right into the outdoor entertaining area, giving the indoor space an open, airy feel. In addition, the timeless design of the house is underscored by cutting-edge smart home technology. The kitchen continues the trend of Cantera stone with a statement backsplash that is delightfully contrasted by the sleek appliances, which include multiple ovens and a large gas cooktop, and the luxury is expanded upon by a spacious wine cellar that faces the butler’s pantry. The master suite includes two separate closets and bathrooms along with a fireplace and a secluded master patio. Two of the additional rooms currently function as a lush home theater, an office space, and an exercise room. Outside, the resort-like entertainment area features a heated pool and spa with a waterfall and a slide. The patio also houses an outdoor kitchen and bar area with ample room for lounging around and admiring the view of the mountaintop during cooler fall nights. Just off the backyard, the 1,237-square-foot guesthouse showcases exposed wood beams and a gourmet kitchen dressed up in cool grays. It also has a separate kids room with two sets of built-in bunk beds, a laundry area, and another expansive patio space. 5129 E. Desert Jewel Drive, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253. Set sail on Norwegian Cruise Line’s spectacular ship-within-a-ship
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS COURTESY OF NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE
For years, cruise aficionados often had to choose between two types of experiences: a smaller, more intimate ship with sometimes-limited dining and entertainment options, or a massive “super ship” with ample amenities but as many as 5,000 fellow passengers on any given sailing. That is, until The Haven by Norwegian. A true ship-within-a-ship and exclusive to Norwegian Cruise Line, The Haven takes the concept of first class (and its associated perks) to new heights. Accessible only by keycard, The Haven – a section within a larger ship – features the most luxurious and well-appointed rooms found on the cruise, ranging from 450-square-foot penthouses to the 6,694-square-foot, three-bedroom garden villa featuring a private outdoor terrace with a hot tub and dining area. There are less than 100 rooms available in The Haven, with the amount varying by ship, ensuring the ultimate in service and privacy. Each of the rooms is within The Haven complex, which also gives guests

access to an upscale restaurant and lounge (with a wine list unavailable anywhere else on board) as well as a private courtyard, a pool, a fitness center and a sundeck, all at the top of the ship and hidden from traditional guests. Some ships also offer private observation lounges as well as complimentary access to the Mandara Spa’s thermal spa suites during regular spa hours. Additionally, guests can indulge in the personalized service of a certified, 24-hour butler and a concierge team, who will make guests’ arrangements on board and on shore, including priority embarkation and disembarkation. Beyond all of this, guests staying in The Haven are able to take advantage of any of their ship’s specialty dining options, which range from a high-end steakhouse to a sushi bar to a French bistro, for no added charge and are provided passes for access to beer, wine and cocktails anywhere on the ship 24 hours a day. And if you prefer a night in, white-glove in-room dining is just a call away. When it comes to entertainment, The Haven guests can enjoy a private attendant and reserved seating to all of the ship’s programming, including Cirque du Soleil-style productions, Broadway-caliber shows, comedy performances and themed parties. There are also nightly invite-only events, including a posh cocktail party with the ship’s captain and officers, exclusive to The Haven guests. If staying in The Haven, all off-ship excursions are also included. In each port, beyond priority embarkation and disembarkation, expect to get private escort by a concierge to your program host. And finally, if work beckons a bit while at sea, guests in The Haven can also access free Wi-Fi throughout their stay. The Haven by Norwegian is available on Norwegian Bliss, Joy, Escape, Getaway, Breakaway, Epic, Gem, Jade, Pearl, Jewel, and its newest ship: Encore, which debuts in November. OH, OCHO RIOS!
Jamaica’s north coast offers luxe amenities and natural wonders
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOS COURTESY OF MOON PALACE JAMAICA
Bob Marley and James Bond. You never thought you would see those two names linked together, did you? Yet, St. Ann Parish – which sits on the northern coast of Jamaica and is best known for Ocho Rios – is both the birthplace (and burial place) of Marley as well as the location of the first James Bond film, 1962’s Dr. No with Sean Connery as Bond, and 1973’s Live and Let Die with Roger Moore as Bond. The 25th James Bond film, No Time to Die with Daniel Craig, set to be released in 2020, was also filmed in Ocho Rios earlier this year. Beyond that, Ocho Rios is an exotic land full of sandy beaches, a rainforest, flowing rivers, majestic mountain ranges, towering waterfalls, and award-winning resorts. It also happens to be temperate throughout the fall and winter, making it an ideal vacation destination through the end of the year and beyond.
Where to Stay There are many resort options in the area, but Moon Palace Jamaica, which opened in 2015 in the heart of Ocho Rios and marked the Palace hospitality brand’s first property outside of Mexico, should be at the top of any visitor’s list. The 704-room, all-inclusive resort has already earned a AAA Four Diamond rating and features 17 acres of ivory sand on the longest stretch of private beach in Ocho Rios. All of the rooms, most of which boast magnificent views of the Caribbean Sea, feature Chi bath amenities and styling products, Apple TV, an in-cabinet liquor dispenser with premium spirits, a Lavazza coffee maker, and wireless internet. The most lavish rooms, however, are the 10 governor’s suites as well as a spacious two-bedroom presidential suite.
Exciting Activities Beyond the opulent accommodations, there is much to do, see, eat and drink both on property and off. On property, guests can enjoy the only FlowRider Double Wave Simulator in Jamaica, four sparkling pools, four dining destinations with premium quality cuts of Certified Angus Beef, the ultra-chic Noir nightclub, a dolphin habitat, a dedicated children’s area for ages 4 to 12, a sushi bar, a fitness center, 24-hour room service, and the 35,000-square-foot Awe Spa. The spa includes 23 treatment rooms, hot- and cold-plunge pools, a steam room, a sauna, a sensory pool, and a relaxation area. The resort also brings in internally recognized entertainment on a regular basis. Arrangements can also be made on-site to take advantage of

several watersports, including kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, catamaran rides, sailing and more. Thanks to a dedicated on-site concierge team with first-hand knowledge of the area and all of its secret – and not-so-secret – hot spots, guests are able to preview and book dozens of public, semi-private and private tours as well as unique activities throughout Ocho Rios and other areas of Jamaica at any of the information desks throughout the resort, or without leaving the privacy of one’s own room. Among the most popular activities are the Blue Mountains, Dunn’s River Falls, Konoko Falls and Park, Mystic Mountain, and Dolphin Cove Ocho Rios. The Blue Mountains form the longest mountain range in the country. This area is prime real estate for hikers, mountain bikers, wildlife enthusiasts, and naturalists of every skill level. Dunn’s River Falls is a series of three waterfalls in Ocho Rios. Together, they are 180 feet high and 600 feet long. Because they are terraced – formed in such a way with rocks and lagoons so that they appear as massive stairs to the human eye – visitors are able to climb from the lowest to highest point, as long as they don’t mind getting a little wet along the way. Konoko Falls and Park has a waterfall of its own that’s smaller than Dunn’s but still climbable, a swimming area, river gardens (a botanical garden with pathways over small ponds and streams teeming with fish), a small zoo known for its collection of exotic birds, and a museum focused on the area’s rich history. Mystic Mountain is, as the name implies, located at the top of a mountain and features three distinct attractions. First, there is the SkyExplorer, which is a slow, relaxing ride to the top of the mountain with 360-degree views of Ocho Rios. Then, there’s the rollercoaster-like Jamaican bobsled, which is sure to make guests feel like they’re in the movie Cool Runnings. Finally, there is a canopy zip line, which allows guests to zip line across a rainforest. Beyond the main attractions, there is also a pool with slides, shopping, a museum and dining options on-site. Finally, at Dolphin Cove Ocho Rios, guests can see – and even swim with – dolphins, sharks and stingrays in their natural environment. When not in the water, there are 5 acres of lush rainforest to explore thanks to its jungle trail, which features tropical birds and iguanas. There is also a sandy beach for those who aren’t as keen on getting up close and personal with wildlife as the rest of their group, but still want to be in on all of the action (and photo ops). HIGH SPIRITS Fall in love with Arizona-made liquors BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Distilleries are popping up all over Arizona, and with Halloween right around the corner, October is a great time to get spirited by sampling some of their spirits. Here are some to try this fall that are all treat and no trick.
Meyer Lemon Vodka O.H.S.O. Brewery & Distillery Distilled with sugarcane and fresh Meyer lemon peels, this bright and crisp vodka with a tart, candied finish is one of many flavored vodka options at the brewery’s Arcadia distillery operation. Though great in cocktails, its meringue undertones make it perfect neat or over ice too. $25. www.ohsobrewery.com.
Papago Dark Rum Adventurous Stills Adventurous Stills uses its own handmade equipment to distill and bottle every spirit in its lineup. Developed to complement Tiki-style cocktails or be enjoyed on its own, this dark rum bursts with candied tropical fruits and toasted coconut, tasting like a beach vacation in a glass. $32. www.adventstills.com.
Tea-Infused Gin CaskWerks Distilling Co. This gin started as an exclusive offering at Scottsdale’s Citizen Public House, but proved so popular that it is now available to the masses. While it retains all of its herbaceous botanical elements, expect clear notes of cardamom and rose petals thanks to an infusion of various teas. $25. www.caskwerks.com.
Saint Anne’s Kashmir Spice Gin SanTan Spirits After more than a decade of building its craft beer brand, SanTan Brewing Company opened SanTan Spirits, a craft distillery, in recent years. Their Saint Anne’s Botanical Spirits use a mix of traditional and unconventional ingredients. This gin, for example, features 10 Indian spices including sarsaparilla, lemongrass and star anise. $25. www.santanspirits.com.
Bloody Basin Bourbon Whiskey Thumb Butte Distillery Distilled in Prescott, this air-dried and port wine-infused whiskey has some spice – and gets its name for the nearby region that was home to one of the worst battles between settlers and Native Americans in the 1800s. It is deep and rich, just like Arizona’s (sometimes shameful) history. $45. www.thumbbuttedistillery.com. Prickly Pear Vodka Canyon Diablo Spirits The colorful prickly pear is among the few flavors that truly screams “Arizona.” This Flagstaff distillery – named for a one-time town during the wildest days of the Wild West in the 1800s – infuses its homemade vodka with the prickly pear fruit while it’s in bloom, resulting in a distinctly subtle sweetness that isn’t too overpowering. $27.99. www.canyondiablospirits.com.

AZ48 Resort Vodka Sonoran Spirits Located in Cave Creek, this distillery uses fresh Sedona spring water in its corn-based vodka, which is filtered five times through activated charcoal. It is exceptionally smooth and quite subtle, making it the perfect addition to a cocktail one might – as you can likely guess from the name – enjoy at a local high-end resort. $22. www.cavecreekbourbon.com. Blue Clover Gin Blue Clover Distillery This Scottsdale distillery focuses on adding modern twists to its spirits. Case in point: The key botanicals in this gin are blood orange, rose and peach rather than traditional elements like juniper, coriander, anise or lavender. The result is floral yet clean and still slightly herbaceous. $22. www.bluecloverdistillery.com.

Northern Italian native and restaurateur Stefano Fabbri – who counts Mora Italian, Luna Gelateria and Meat the Ball among his concepts – may have named his first Valley restaurant Pomo Pizzeria (initially in the Borgata and now in Gainey Village as Pomo Pizzeria Napoletana), but his menu goes beyond just pizza. His pasta, in fact, is handcrafted with imported Italian semolina flour. His Linguini Salmone ($19.95) is not only made using the specialty flour, eggs and salt, but also black squid ink, giving the dish dramatic color and nuanced flavor. Once al dente, it is plated with a rich rosé sauce featuring salmon, shallots and green onions that have been flambéed with vodka and cooked over heat with cherry tomatoes, San Marzano tomato sauce, cream, basil, and lemon zest. CAMPARI QUEEN
Pigtails’ Negroni Treaty transitions from a one-time special to a full-time star
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
When The Whining Pig opened its Desert Ridge location last year, it marked a new era for the local brand. “Our other locations to date had been cozy haunts that served beer and wine only, plus a small food menu. At over 4,000 square feet, the Desert Ridge space lent itself to adding something new. Enter Pigtails,” says bar manager Kyla Dahl. Pigtails is a 2,500-square-foot hidden bar located inside The Whining Pig Desert Ridge. Accessible via a dark hallway, the speakeasy-style bar mostly offers a combination of classic and modern cocktails. And then there are options like the Negroni Treaty ($10), a modern take on a classic cocktail. “We challenged our team to each develop a riff on the cocktail for Negroni Week in June,” says Dahl, who created the Treaty. “We put them all on our menu for that one week and were blown away by the response.” Given the positive feedback, when the fall menu rolled out in September, the Negroni Treaty made the cut. It starts with citrus-forward Bluecoat Dry Gin and Campari, the key ingredient in any proper Negroni and known for its bitter orange flavor. “My twist is subbing out the traditional sweet vermouth in the cocktail for a fortified blend of three sherries: sweet Portuguese Madeira, nutty Amontillado, and creamy Pedro Ximénez,” Dahl says. She also adds Tiki bitters before stirring, pouring into a Nick and Nora glass, and garnishing with a burnt orange twist. “It’s silkier than a traditional Negroni and has great notes of baking spice for fall,” Dahl says. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Drew Holowicki of The Scottsdale Plaza Resort
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
Drew Holowicki is the executive chef at The Scottsdale Plaza Resort, overseeing all culinary operations including JD’s Restaurant and Lounge, Garden Court, Cafe Cabana, in-room dining and banquets.
How did you get your start in cooking? I grew up in Detroit and studied criminal justice at Michigan State University, thinking I might go into federal law enforcement. But, I loved cooking. So much so I took a year off after my junior year to work more seriously on my craft. But, with only one year left in college, I went back and earned my degree before moving to Scottsdale in 2002 to attend the Scottsdale Culinary Institute. Tell us about your trajectory in Arizona. I started in the kitchen at Desert Mountain Country Club before moving over to the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in 2003. There, I met a kindred spirit in fellow chef Erik Forrest. I eventually became a chef for Nordstrom Restaurants, including the location at Scottsdale Fashion Square, where I worked for nearly six years and served as executive chef from 2010 to 2015. What was the best thing about heading up the Nordstrom kitchen? Be jealous. I got 33% off at all Nordstrom locations nationwide. How did you make your way to The Scottsdale Plaza Resort? Erik Forrest, the executive chef at that time and my above-noted kindred spirit, recruited me to be his sous chef back in January. When he transitioned to food and beverage director in May, I was named executive chef. Tell us about your newly launched menu at JD’s Restaurant and Lounge. While we aren’t going so far as foams or emulsions, JD’s has evolved into a gastropub. We launched a new menu to match this vision. Ingredients are fresher, techniques have been modernized, and the menu is a now mix of elevated comfort food and sharable date night bites. What ingredients do you love right now? Or hate? Kale needs to go back to being a garnish, where it belongs! Conversely, Mexican oregano is one of the most underrated spices of all time. The Scottsdale Plaza Resort, 7200 N. SINFULLY DELICIOUS Take a fabulous foodcation in Las Vegas
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon
Legendary chef Joël Robuchon had 32 Michelin stars, more than any chef in history. And though he passed away last year, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon – open for dinner in the MGM Grand – lives on. L’Atelier is French for workshop, and that’s exactly how the team treats the restaurant; it’s a culinary workshop to tinker with ingredients and flavors. Each dish is prepared in an open kitchen so guests get to see all of the action. There are multiple tasting menus, most three or four courses with intermittent surprise treats in between. Dishes run the gamut from veal sweetbreads and Kusshi oysters to caramelized quail and seared Dover sole. www.mgmgrand.com.
Charlie Palmer Steak Las Vegas
Located in the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas, this elegant dinner restaurant was designed with comfort in mind. The dining room’s grand arches, meant to remind one of a high-end Spanish home, welcome visitors without overpowering the eye, while deep couches and overstuffed chairs help make guests feel right at home. The menu is a combination of raw bar delicacies, seafood, shellfish and impressive cuts of meat, including A5 wagyu beef from Kagoshima, Japan. Unique to the venue and among its longtime bestsellers is a two-pound, Ritz Cracker-stuffed Maine lobster. Yes, really! A bonus: There’s a specialty menu for vegetarian and vegan guests. www.charliepalmersteak.com.
Rivea
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, unless we’re talking about food. It is nearly impossible not to rave about the area’s culinary scene – the food alone could rival any Vegas attraction. Here are some of the hottest, most decadent spots to try on your next stop in Sin City.
Chef Alain Ducasse, known as the first chef to own restaurants carrying three Michelin stars in three cities, founded this stunner, which is open for dinner in the Delano Las Vegas. And while the decor is laid-back and relaxed – think maritime blues and breezy whites throughout – the menu is anything but casually prepared and presented. The dishes have French, English and Italian nods, with seasonal West Coast ingredients. The menu, which is teeming with flavor and clever pairings of things like English pea velouté with quail eggs and sea bass with oranges, lemon and grapefruit, is designed to transport one to the French Riviera without leaving the Strip. www.delanolasvegas.com.
Bavette’s Steakhouse & Bar
Offering what it refers to as French flair without the formality, this stylish dinner restaurant located inside Park MGM aims to blend fine dining with frivolity and fun. Visually, a combination of vintage art and art deco mirrors adorn the walls while velvet chairs offer plush seating. Chandeliers light the space just enough to read the menu – and what a menu it is. Americana
Located off the Strip on Lake Las Vegas, Americana – open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch – is an upscale, lakeside dining restaurant that offers American cuisine blended with European influences. Drawing inspiration from his Italian grandmothers, owner and executive chef Stephen Blandino, who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park and worked under Charlie Palmer, has mastered the art of creating both fresh, flavorful dishes and memorable guest experiences. A best bet is opting for one of his specialty tasting menus – including a vegan option – featuring five seasonally-inspired courses. www.americanalasvegas.com.

oysters are offered from both coasts along with double-bone Berkshire pork chops, decadent truffle mac and cheese, and a seafood platter that towers over guests with Maine lobster and king crab. www.bavettessteakhouse.com.
This French- and Spanish-inspired dinner restaurant tucked into the Bellagio Las Vegas is headed by two-time James Beard Foundation Award-winner Julian Serrano, known for dreaming up dishes that are as much works of art as the Picassos that hang throughout the restaurant. The menu features two options: a pre-theater, three-course tasting menu and a traditional six-course chef’s tasting menu (which can be modified for vegetarians as needed). The chef’s tasting menu starts with a tapasstyle offering based on seasonality. It always features several main entrees from which to choose and a fois gras “steak” as well. Caviar and wine pairings are available for an additional cost. www.bellagio.com.
Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House
Known for what he calls his “New New Orleans” style of cooking, which puts a twist on Louisiana’s classic Creole dishes, chef Emeril Lagasse’s namesake fish house located in the MGM Grand kicks everything up a notch, as Lagasse would say. Expect market-fresh fish and shellfish creations at both lunch and dinner alongside flavorful steaks and brilliant pork and chicken dishes, all paired with Wine Spectator magazine’s Best of Award of Excellence options, beer and craft cocktails. And thanks to the imaginative, sea-inspired interior design by New York’s acclaimed Rockwell Group, the restaurant makes you feel closer to the sea than the Strip. www.emerilsrestaurants.com.
Morels Steakhouse & Bistro
A true jewel in the Palazzo Las Vegas’ crown and open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, Morels Steakhouse & Bistro was thoughtfully designed with warm woods and cool blue walls and is adorned with provocative art from Tom Cannon. The wine menu features more than 60 options by the glass, 450 varietals by the bottle, and a wine system that allows guests to sip two-, five- or eight-ounce pours. Menu spotlights include crepes, 18-hour braised short ribs, both Iowa corn-fed and Kansas grass-fed steaks aged 28 days, and a Prime option aged 35 days. Also, don’t miss

WINDY CITY WOWZA Chicago-based Maple & Ash opens in Scottsdale
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
The Valley’s many Midwest transplants and longtime locals alike are not going to want to miss Scottsdale’s latest import from Chicago: Maple & Ash. Located on the Scottsdale Waterfront and opened in August, this modern take on the classic American steakhouse is as much a feast for the eyes as the stomach. At more than 10,000 square feet, the space is expansive. It features eight different seating area options, some private, and can accommodate more than 300 guests. Visually, the restaurant features a combination of contemporary colors as well as rich, jewel-toned leathers and natural woods for contrast. The lounge is warm and vibrant, featuring plush seating and sleek, low-profile cocktail tables in a candle-lit atmosphere. Draped with semi-sheer and velvet curtains, the multiple dining rooms are centered around a celebratory atrium strung with a showstopping, custom-made chandelier. The brand itself is led by chef Danny Grant of national restaurant group What If Syndicate. He actually grew up in Scottsdale and worked at Elements at the Sancturary before moving to Chicago in the early 2000s. Grant drew national acclaim

as executive chef of Ria and Balsan restaurants at the former Elysian Hotel (now Waldorf Astoria Chicago), where his menus earned him Food & Wine Magazine’s best new chef award in 2012. Grant is also the youngest U.S. chef in history to earn two Michelin stars (2011 and 2012). Though he will work primarily from the Chicago location, Grant will collaborate with Scottsdale’s day-to-day executive chef Sean Currid. The two actually worked together at Elements years ago, and Currid also brings experience from JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn, Michael’s at the Citadel, Mary Elaine’s at The Phoenician, and Zuzu at Hotel Valley Ho. At Maple & Ash, the menu features dry-aged, wood-fired steaks as well as premium seafood and shellfish, including impressive towers; a caviar menu; handmade pasta; and shareable, comfort food-focused sides such as fire-crisped shishito peppers, Yukon Gold au gratin potatoes, and mac and cheese. The Butcher’s Reserve menu includes elevated cuts of meat, like the 8-ounce Snake River wagyu filet mignon ($128) as well as massive cuts, like the 45-day dry-aged tomahawk that clocks in at 40 ounces. There is also a special option where, for $155 per person, you can enjoy a multicourse menu dreamt up by the chef – and certainly larger portions than you might expect from a traditional chef’s tasting. The extensive wine program is under the direction of award-winning and advanced sommelier Jason Caballero – most recently of the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess – and the cocktail menu boasts 12 signature offerings, with a mix of spirit-forward, classic and modern options. Maple & Ash is open Sunday to Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. Maple & Ash, 7135 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; 480.400.8888; www.mapleandash.com.
