THEin BESTthe Biz Why so many women, including celebrities in the entertainment and fitness industries, are becoming National Hair Loss devotees.

I

t’s an indisputable fact: women want beautiful hair. Throughout history, we’ve been obsessed with making it that way. Unfortunately, another fact is that the majority of women will face some sort of hair loss in their lifetime, and that presents a definite challenge in our quest for a lush, gorgeous ‘do. Female hair loss occurs for an astonishing variety of very common reasons. We can shed our strands post-pregnancy, when we’re stressed out or eating an unbalanced diet, or after surgery or weight loss – but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hormones, medications, illnesses, and genetics can all play a role in diminishing our “crowning glory.” It’s a problem that doesn’t escape many women, even those in the high-profile entertainment and fitness industries. And when you live your life under the sharp gaze of the public eye, always expected to look your best, having less-than-luscious locks can hit especially hard. Enter National Hair Loss, a company that is fast becoming a favorite of its clientele – women and men, celebs and non-celebs alike – because of the unprecedented results people are achieving. The name pops up more and more frequently in outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter and Women’s Health Magazine, as those whose hair is a professional asset entrust National Hair Loss to preserve and maintain it. One such celebrity is Letitia Frye – a renowned motivational speaker and “Auctiontainer” who has helped raise over $200 million for charity alongside A-list stars. Her lifelong commitment to helping others, along with her endurance of two unspeakable tragedies, gave way to her unique and engaging speaking career. An avid runner all her life, Letitia was struck by a car while jogging, which left her with a severe concussion and traumatic brain

injury. Previous thyroid-related hair loss issues had led Letitia to seek help from National Hair Loss, and she sought them out within ten days of her accident to help with the trauma to her scalp. Within a few months, her hair was back and healthier than ever thanks to the interventions of the National Hair Loss team. When you demand a crowd’s attention and all eyes are on you, you want to feel your best … and now, Letitia does. National Hair Loss’s popularity is due to a combination of factors – for starters, it’s staffed by people who have firsthand experience with hair loss, either their own or a loved one’s. This lends to the supportive and understanding atmosphere so crucial for client success. They understand, perhaps better than most, that there are nearlyinnumerable reasons for hair loss, and that it requires much more than a one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why each client receives a comprehensive workup using cutting-edge technologies, and a program is specifically tailored to target their unique issues. “Through a hair analysis, we can learn about a lot of things, including nutritional deficiencies, concentrations of certain metals, and food intolerances,” says Carly Klein, founder of National Hair Loss, who makes it her personal mission to stay on top of the latest in hair therapies. When we start noticing thin patches or a drain full of clumps, it’s alarming at best, especially since we’re rarely sure why it’s happening. “Women don’t realize that some of the normal things they do can harm their hair,” Carly states. For example, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – a common treatment that, ironically, helps women feel and look younger and rejuvenated – can lead to

hair loss. But according to Carly, National Hair Loss can stabilize the hair so that there isn’t an issue, letting women reap the benefits of their HRT worry-free. “Lots of women, even those in the spotlight, struggle with hair loss,” she says. “But we’re masters at what we do.” And whether it’s genetics or medication or diet or another reason altogether, National Hair Loss has the perfect solution

to preserve and protect each precious strand. Watch for our upcoming series highlighting the personal hair loss challenges of several of your favorite local celebs!

Experts in MonaLisa Touch News Update: The MonaLisa Touch has now been FDA approved in the U.S. for over 2 years and at Arizona Women’s Care more than 1000 procedures have brought amazing results to women across the Southwest region. This amazing NON HORMONAL treatment for vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, frequent bladder or vaginal infections and other symptoms that result from a lack of estrogen has revolutionized our success in treating these disheartening issues. In a recent Stanford University study, reductions in dryness and painful intercourse were especially marked, dropping an average of 75% and 66% respectively. As Lindsay (age 56) states, “I was skeptical, but I needed to try something. After the 3 treatments, intercourse was so much better I could not believe it. I actually asked my husband if we could do it again, and he was shocked! It has made such a difference in our relationship.” The MonaLisa Touch uses fractional CO2 laser therapy

to regenerate collagen and rid the vaginal mucosa of the dry atrophic cells. Three simple treatments in the office 6 weeks apart have shown incredible improvements in vaginal atrophy. These treatments take about 5 minutes and are virtually painfree, no anesthesia is needed. As women caring for women, our expertise and customer service are unsurpassed in the valley. Our staff of all-female physicians were the 1st board certified OB/GYNS in the state of Arizona to perform the MonaLisa Touch procedure. We welcome you to any of our open house seminars to learn more about the MonaLisa Touch! You will have the opportunity to meet with the doctors and talk with the patients who have had this life changing procedure. One last testimonial from Rhonda (age 61) sums up why we do what we do, “Thank you Arizona Women’s Care for offering me the MonaLisa Touch! It is an amazing treatment. I am 100% back to feeling like I did 20 years ago!”

AMERICAN FEDERAL BUYS COINS TRUE STORY: A local woman inherited a $20 Gold Saint Gaudens coin and took it to several coin shops. She was offered $1,200 - $1,400 for the coin. When she brought the coin to American Federal we knew that it was actually a rare variety 1907 High Relief $20 Saint Gaudens and we paid her over $25,000 for the coin!!!! She felt very lucky that she didn’t take any of the initial low-ball offers.

1907 High Relief $20 Saint Gaudens

I’VE SEEN A LOT OF ADVERTISEMENTS FROM DEALERS WANTING TO SELL COINS TO ME. A DEALER EVEN TOLD ME THEY SELL COINS BUT DON’T BUY THEM BACK. WILL YOUR COMPANY BUY COINS THAT I PURCHASED FROM OTHER DEALERS, I INHERITED OR JUST FOUND IN OLD DRAWERS? A: YES! My company, American Federal Rare Coin & Bullion will buy your coins regardless of where they came from. Many people purchase coins for fun or as an investment. I regularly meet nice people that have inherited coins they don’t know much about or simply don’t wish to hold on to. American Federal specializes in buying rare coins and precious metals from the public. We have buyers for coins worth $500,000 to $50.

I WAS THINKING OF GOING TO A LOCAL COIN SHOP OR PAWNSHOP TO SELL MY COINS. DO THEY ALL PAY THE SAME FAIR MARKET VALUE? A: Coin shops may or may not be a good place to sell. Generally, they have small local markets to sell their coins to and often coins may sit in their display cases for months or even years before they sell. They can only afford to do that if they buy your coins at deep discounts. A pawnshop will pay even less for coins and many have little knowledge of coin values. Overall, neither of these options is a good choice, if you want top dollar out of the coins you own.

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT MY COINS ARE REALLY WORTH? A: American Federal offers Complimentary Appraisals on your coins. We tell you what they are worth and will make you an offer for your coins should you want to sell. We will tell you exactly how to get the most from your holdings. We have a nationwide network of dealers and collectors who depend on us to supply them with rare and semi rare coins. Of course, we buy gold, silver and platinum bullion and coins also. Give us a call to schedule an appointment or simply send a copy of your list of coins. We will give you a very good idea of the true value of your coins right over the phone. You can also visit us in person in our Carefree, AZ office. We also travel to you and review your coins in the privacy of your own home or your bank.

Call American Federal Rare Coin and Bullion at 480-553-5282 or email me personally at nick@americanfederal.com for more information. I’ll be pleased to send you a Complimentary Coin Price Guide to get you started.

ne of the underlying notions of being a writer and editor is that people entrust you to tell their life stories, or at least give a glimpse into who they are. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly, and I always find myself enthralled with learning how they got to where they are, what hurdles they had to overcome, and what advice they share. Such is the case with this month’s feature on power couples (page 44). The idea struck me many months ago, and I knew I had to run with it. So many people are out to make a difference in the world, but it’s definitely something special when you find your partner in that same mission. That’s exactly who these couples are, and I hope you find them as inspiring as I did. Even our cover story on former actress Natalie Marston-Salem (page 40) highlights another power couple. Together, with her husband, Marston-Salem opened Fountain Hills Recovery in honor of her late father and with a goal of helping others on their road to healing. Undoubtedly, September indicates the start of football season. We accept that not everyone bleeds Arizona Cardinals red, and, luckily, for select teams, there are places to find like-minded fans. Pick your team, and then head to page 78 to find your bar. As we inch closer to the finish line of summer, it’s evident that we’re eager to get there; we’re already thinking about fall trends in beauty (page 92) and fashion (pages 90 and 100). I’ll confess I’ve been dreaming of cooler days for far too long, as I’m sure most of you have. So, until then, we recommend seeking reprieve at five local spas with ultra-relaxing amenities (page 80) – best enjoyed in the company of your friends, of course.

STEPPING INTO THE SPOTLIGHT Lifestyle expert Julie Xander discusses her transformation and how that’s shaped her into being a voice of inspiration for others BY BRITTANY MARONEY

he was six years old, and it was the biggest day of her young life. Little Julie Xander had been working hard the past few months to perfect her spins, her dips, and her hand movements. Every day after school was spent practicing. She was a little girl bursting with excitement, and it was her day to shine.

up close Her mother had helped tie her hair up in bows, and the recital was just minutes away from starting. Even now, her dance teacher was grinning with excitement. Young Julie Xander knew she was one of the best in the class. She may not have a cookie-cutter ballerina body like some of the girls, but she was a good dancer. That is when she heard the words that would haunt her for years: “Julie, honey,” her teacher said. “You know your spot is in the back.” Xander grew up the only daughter in a family of three boys. She spent her weekdays roughhousing in their home in Scottsdale and her weekends skiing and camping in the wilds of Northern Arizona. Despite her tomboyish tendencies, she loved dance classes and baton twirling, two activities that always seemed to highlight her weight. “As a child, I was always selfconscious about my weight,” Xander says. “As a dancer and championship baton twirler, not having the skinny little body was very hard. I was always placed in the back row, coaches would ask about my eating habits, and the other little girls didn’t want to play with me. The fashionable, cute girl clothing didn’t come in my size. I went seasons wearing boys clothes because those hid my shape.” What made it more difficult was that Xander’s family came from a long line of fashion-forward entrepreneurs. Her grandmother started one of the first all-women’s department stores in New York, and her grandfather was one of the most prestigious dress buyers in the Big Apple. Not surprisingly, Xander grew up surrounded by fashion, making it a big conversation topic during her formative years and an important aspect of her life. As an adolescent, Xander recalls struggling with body issues and selfconfidence. She couldn’t fit in the clothes she most admired and felt out of place in a world seemingly obsessed with being a certain size.

Turning a New Leaf “As I entered adulthood, my views on healthy living, staying active, and keeping

fit started to shift. It also changed the way my body was feeling and functioning,” Xander says. “One day, I was shopping and the clothes fit me in a whole different way. The fashions I had always admired were in my size and they seemed to hug me in brand new places.” Xander experienced a whole new perspective on life after that moment. She began balancing workouts with eating right. She incorporated hormone therapy, cryotherapy, massage and vitamins into her new healthy lifestyle. She found

confidence in fashion, and launched a blog to share her experiences. “I have always been a person who loved to share, and, for years, people were seeing this transformation in me,” Xander says. “They wanted to know how they could transform their lives; find confidence, health and beauty; and be the best they could be. They wanted to know where to eat, how to work out, and how to build themselves up. I had answers to that, and blogging was a way to pass on my favorite things to a much larger group of people.” Xander’s blog, Lifestyle Jules (www.lifestylejules.com), encourages “beauty from the inside out” and falling in love with taking care of yourself. As her blog increased in popularity, she incorporated videos into her social media sites. Her Facebook now boasts more than 10,000 eager followers. Xander has truly taken center stage in a big way. “I love that anyone can follow me to get great advice on fashion, fitness, beauty and wellness,” Xander says. “What was even more interesting is that I now could help businesses showcase their products and services – the very same products that helped me become the person I am. I could bring my followers into their offices or shops and introduce them to amazing brands that could change their lives.” As a fashion and fitness influencer, Xander now offers her expertise to others seeking a healthier lifestyle, nutrition, fashion tips and brand advice. She has worked as a spokesmodel, barre choreographer and has earned a physiology degree. She is also a mother of three and has grown a successful lifestyle coaching business. Undoubtedly, she has come a long way from being that little girl in the back row. “I am my own inspiration, and I believe you can be too. I was the chubby girl who nobody wanted on their team, and now I am a strong woman who can go head-to-head with any great athlete,” Xander says. “It just proves that it’s a matter of consistency, hard work and determination. We all have it in us, and I’d love to help others in finding that.”

How to handle fine hair -Ask the expert! Rodney Gentry, Full-service Designer and Hair Color Specialist, Sachi Studios

Q: We’ve focused on the problems and solutions of fine hair here, but are there also advantages to it? RG: Of course! Fine hair can look stunning, just like all other types of hair. Fine hair tends to be soft and silky. This makes it harder to style, but the flip side is that it can almost glow with a wonderful, natural shine. Those with curly fine hair will also find they spend much less time straightening it than their thicker-haired friends. Fine hair is also brilliant for the summer months, when it helps to keep the head cooler. Just like all other hair types, fine hair comes with plentiful advantages, as well as its own particular issues!

From static issues to limp, dull styles, fine hair can sometimes feel impossible to get right. Thankfully, expert color specialist Rodney Gentry, based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, is here to help! Q: First, why is it that some of us have finer hair than others? Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference. Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair. Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. There are also some great products on the market to help with fine hair. I’m loving Goldwell Kerasilk Repower range right now. The four products—shampoo, conditioner, volume plumping cream, volume blow-dry spray— harness the power of natural ingredients like carob in order to create long-lasting volume that leaves the hair bouncy and lightweight. Products like these work wonders, and it is great to be able to introduce clients to them and know how much they will enjoy the effect that they have. Simple things like drying technique can also make a big difference. People with fine hair should lift the hair outward and upward as they dry if they want maximum volume. They should also avoid brushing it when wet, as fine hair can break very easily.

Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments. Q: Can you recommend any quick fixes for those with fine hair? RG: Well, a quick trip to Sachi Studios, for one! For those after a quick fix at home, I would recommend always having a deep conditioning masque on hand, ready to be used as a weekly treatment or whenever particularly luscious locks are required. On a daily basis, it really doesn’t get much better than the Goldwell Kerasilk volume line for those looking for added body.

LOVE IN HER SOLE

Becki Coakley talks shop on her luxury line of footwear BY BRITTANY MARONEY PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

W

hen you put your best foot forward, you want it to be spectacular. At least that’s what Becki Coakley believes. A shoe lover from a young age, it took a heartbreaking loss for her to find the inner strength to pursue her love of fashion and footwear. “Shoes had always been a love that my mother and I shared,” Coakley says. “Even when I was young, I dreamed of being a shoe designer but always put it on the backburner because I thought it was unattainable. When my mother passed, I realized that life was too short to wait.” Her mother’s memory fueled her namesake footwear company, as well as her logo, which can be seen at www.beckicoakley.com. Created with the sophisticated woman in mind, Coakley’s collection is comprised of elegant shoes with flair – think colors that pop, sumptuous leather, eye-catching details, and unique architectural designs – all handcrafted in Italy. “I design for the woman who is strong and fashion-forward,” Coakley says. “She has her own style and is confident in it. It’s for the woman in all of us, who loves to dress up and throw on an amazing set of heels.”

Etc.

How would you describe your style? My style is classic, yet simple, with a little bit of sexy-chic. I love straight lines and symmetry as well as pieces that are timeless. What’s hot in your collection for fall? This season is about playing with different materials like velvets and satins. My three signature designs – which are the Julie bow shoe, Charlene bootie and the Tanaia shoes – will be coming back in fall colors and materials. I also am playing with ruffled materials, cutouts and flaps. Flats and kitten heels are coming back, too. What advice would you give shoe buyers? I always advise others to really love the shoes that they are selecting. Never settle and make sure they’re totally your style. I also suggest looking at shoes as an investment into your wardrobe. One pair of high-quality shoes is worth more than 10 pairs that are not of higher quality. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

ADVOCATE FOR DIVERSITY

Simone Colgan Dunlap embraces what makes us all different and unique BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

G

rowing up on an oil company compound in Saudi Arabia, Simone Colgan Dunlap was surrounded by people from all corners of the world. “The experience profoundly influenced my thinking. I learned the value of difference but to question inequality, particularly for women. I felt compelled to take advantage of opportunities that were not available to Saudi women,” says Colgan Dunlap, who is a partner in the Health Law Group at Quarles & Brady. Colgan Dunlap’s passion for diversity led her to work at her college’s intercultural center, to teach in Japan, and, later, to law school where she interned for the U.S. Department of State, taking her to the United Nations in Geneva. Her commitment to diversity and leadership continue – for many years, she chaired Quarles & Brady’s Women’s Forum and is now the chair of the firm’s Health & Life Sciences Industry Team, all while serving on its diversity committee. “Inclusion matters – every person matters, every single day,” Colgan Dunlap says. “Employing a diversity of thought, creativity and experience to understand each other is what makes us all better.”

Etc.

Why are diversity issues so dear to your heart? Diversity was a fact of life growing up. My mom is from India, and my dad is from Minnesota; we are a melting pot. Embracing differences and how they can enrich life was a natural by-product of that environment. How did your mom inspired you? Calling my mom a strong woman is an understatement. She moved by herself to Saudi Arabia in the 1970s to work for an oil company, bucking multiple traditions. I have definitely been inspired by her example. Why law? I actually started out wanting to be a physician because I wanted to help people. When I spoke to practitioners in the field, they shared the less idealistic view of the profession so I decided to explore other options. Through law, I can act as an advocate for my clients and help them solve problems in a practical way. Health care law was a good fit given my initial interest in medicine. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

MORE THAN R MEETS THE EYE Motivational speaker Rudy Montijo’s grounded sense of style BY EMILY GLYNN PHOTO BY JAMES PATRICK

udy Montijo is living proof that our worst decisions often instigate our best. In 2013, after a near-fatal car accident and years of poor judgment jeopardized his life, Montijo traded a toxic lifestyle for the opportunity to help others learn from his mistakes. These days, the professional speaker and certified yoga instructor shares his experiences with corporate companies, collegiate athletes and school-aged children, communicating the importance of self-betterment through his sophisticated, yet spiritual, wardrobe. “I’m always wearing mala beads,” he says of his trademark accessory, which is a string of beads commonly used in prayer and meditation rituals. “They help me stay grounded and remind me to breathe. Whether I’m in a suit, buttondown or T-shirt, I like to coordinate the appropriate color of stones on my wrist to what I’m wearing.” On and off the clock, the former University of Arizona football player is wary of trends, leaning more toward simple, clean-cut pieces from Nordstrom and lululemon that strengthen his professional image. Montijo’s favorite outfit, however, isn’t an ensemble you’ll find in stores. “I had some custom suits and shirts made in Bangkok a few months ago,” he says. “They fit like a glove.” How important are first impressions? I think it depends on the context. There are times when you want to be noticed and times when you don’t. Knowing the difference is just as important. What goes into coordinating the perfect outfit, on and off the clock? On the clock, it has to be crisp – loafers with no socks in the summer, and if I’m wearing a suit, I need my pocket square. Off the clock, I’m usually in a pair of Vans, rag & bone jeans, and a Spiritual Gangster T-shirt or button-down. Picture yourself five years from now. Where are you and what are you wearing? I’m in Costa Rica or Hawaii hosting a retreat, on my yoga mat, wearing board shorts and mala beads.

ARTFUL AESTHETICS Diane Howard has an undeniable eye for the elegance of simplicity BY EMILY GLYNN PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

A

s a registered nurse and the owner of Esthetic Finesse (www.estheticfinesse. com), Diane Howard spends much of her time honing in on the finer details to help others look and feel their best. It’s only natural, then, that the rest of her life follows suit. “I’ve got my routine down to a minimum,” she says of her schedule, which incorporates green juices, meditation and an unassuming approach to fashion. “I rely on my professionalism, hair, makeup and nails to represent my style. Part of being my best is continually looking for ways to simplify.” Years in the beauty industry inspired Howard to embrace the “less is more” ideal, and her wardrobe – a collection of seamlessly fitted classics with a proclivity for dresses, blush tones and clothing with black detail – allows her to exude a natural attractiveness without the addition of extravagant accessories. “I know my body type and what styles work best for me,” she says. “My rule of thumb is to only buy [something] if you love it.” It’s a talent Howard has been cultivating since she was a young girl, when she would venture to San Francisco with her family to ogle the street scene and scour boutiques for one-of-a-kind pieces. And her critical eye has only improved with age. “I spend time studying aesthetic visuals on marketing ads, celebrities, models, the wealthy and successful, and the beauty of nature,” she says. “I look to see what works, what doesn’t and why.” Which items do you find yourself wearing the most? High-waisted, long, flowy skirts paired with form-fitting crop tops. What is the most unorthodox piece of beauty advice you’ve ever received? Outer beauty fades while inner beauty is timeless. Continuously develop your inner beauty. What is something aspiring business owners need to know? It’s a birthing of sorts. Plan to open your availability to attend to this new “baby.” Organization is key! Having all areas of life organized keeps a clear mind for growing and learning.

FORMER ACTRESS NATALIE MARSTON-SALEM PAYS TRIBUTE TO HER LATE FATHER WITH THE CREATION OF FOUNTAIN HILLS RECOVERY

atalie Marston-Salem’s eyes well up when she thinks about her father, Maurice Marston, on what would have been his 67th birthday.

She believes she could have done more to save his life, but the 30-year fire captain was too mired in his own battle with drugs and alcohol. The two were estranged for years, but spoke again shortly before his death. “After he passed away, I felt a lot of guilt. I’m not sure if that’s the right word,” she says wistfully. “There was a little bit of denial about him having the issues as severe as he did. I wished I had tried harder to get him the help that he needed.” That’s easy to say in hindsight. But the forward-thinking Marston-Salem and her husband, John Salem, wanted to help others emerge from this downward spiral. So, last year, they opened Fountain Hills Recovery, a drug and alcohol treatment center that provides high-end care with a wide range of options. The initial goal was to bring awareness to the struggles of first responders, firefighters, law enforcement officers and veterans with substance abuse issues, as addiction among those groups is more common than one might think. MarstonSalem says it’s often overlooked because they are prideful and tend to keep their problems to themselves. Even so, since its opening, Fountain Hills Recovery has seen many different types of individuals seeking help for addiction, from doctors and lawyers to athletes and college students.

| SEPTEMBER 2017

“This disease doesn’t discriminate based on your social status or your career,” Marston-Salem says. “It’s an epidemic and the damage it does to families is heartbreaking.” In her clinic that overlooks Fountain Hills’ namesake park, Marston-Salem says, “This is dedicated to my father and his memory. That passion drives us and our business. We wanted the best possible treatment center as far as our clinical programs and amenities.” Fountain Hills Recovery provides inpatient care, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient programs. In addition, detox services are available. “Inpatient is the best way to get help,” Marston-Salem says. “We take them out of their environment, and the ugliness they’ve been in. We get them away from everyday reminders. We bring them in, care for them, and show them the love, support and compassion they deserve.” Fountain Hills Recovery’s staff, which includes clinical and medical directors as well as three therapists, addresses the underlying causes and conditions that spurred the addiction. According to Marston-Salem, many patients have dual diagnoses, including depression, bipolar, anxiety and PTSD. “We give them a safe place to address their addiction properly,” she says. “It is so rewarding to see those who do graduate from our program begin to get their lives back. The change we see in them from when they first walk in our doors, so broken from addiction, to when they complete the program is so rewarding for us. It’s the best feeling to see that evolution in our clients.” Drug and alcohol treatment isn’t easy, so comfort was a priority in creating the center. Fountain Hills Recovery provides two multimillion-dollar homes that serve as living facilities. The men reside in Vista House, a $3.9-million, 12,000-square-foot home with multiple elevators, a movie theater and a spa. Meanwhile, the women stay in the 8,000-square-foot Sonoran Home, which sits on 11 acres with a view of the fountain in the distance and amenities like the men’s residence. Equine, yoga and adventure therapies can be big parts

of the program for both men and women as well. “We’re proud of the homes,” Salem says. “But we’re not pitching a country club. That’s not our goal. Our goal is to give proper care and a high level of care.” Marston-Salem adds that the patients need to be comfortable and feel safe, which is why such focus was given to the physical spaces and amenities themselves. She notes, “They need to have time to reflect on what they’ve learned throughout the day.” Fountain Hills Recovery’s high staffto-patient radio is important to the couple. Although the facility can handle 60 to 90 patients at a time, the staff allows a maximum of 20. Patients at Fountain Hills Recovery meet one-on-one with their primary therapist to gain the trust they need to delve into “some really deep stuff.”

A New Venture Fountain Hills Recovery is a departure for Marston-Salem and her husband. A native of Yonkers, New York, Salem owns Statewide Promotions, an online promotion company that works on behalf of 1,700 major automotive service centers across 27 U.S. markets and three in Canada. It was the largest company of its kind from 2012 to 2016. Though Marston-Salem is known for her acting career. Born in Upland, California, she started acting in commercials at age 5. “I pretty much did Barbie commercials when I was growing up,” she says. “If there was a call for a glamorous little girl with long hair, that was me.” When she was older, she acted in films and on TV, most notably The Agency with Will Patton; Time Share featuring Timothy Dalton; and Magnolia, a Paul Thomas Anderson movie starring Tom Cruise. Marston-Salem also appeared in an episode of Criminal Minds directed by Seinfeld actor Jason Alexander. “It was my passion, and I really enjoyed it,” says Marston-Salem, who was later hired to play Snow White at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Her mother kept her grounded by putting her thumb on the pulse of her

daughter’s career. Marston-Salem says her mother and her own conservative morals kept her on the “good side of the business.” “It’s a very cut-throat business,” she says. In 2007, Marston-Salem and her husband met at real estate school in Anaheim, ultimately falling in love and marrying in 2010. “We fell in love with Scottsdale and we love calling Scottsdale home,” says Marston-Salem, who has two young children with Salem. “John comes from a large family and most of his siblings live here in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley.” Marston-Salem and her staff are pleased that the facility has touched the communities of Fountain Hills and Scottsdale. She chalks up its success to staff members, like clinical director Dr. Justin Evans and the master’s degree therapists who work under him. “We have a great culture,” she says. “We’re all like-minded individuals. The proof is in the pudding when they walk through the door, and we do everything within our power to give them long-term sobriety. Ultimately, though, they have to be the ones to do the work.” Fountain Hills Recovery’s staff deal with “gut-wrenching, emotional stuff all day long,” Marston-Salem says, adding that it’s important to dig in and expose inner thoughts, something that is usually a challenge for addicts. “It’s a peaceful environment. We give the clients every possible chance at sobriety and give them all the tools they could possibly use to achieve that. At Fountain Hills Recovery, we’ll take the first step with you.” That, Marston-Salem says, is her way of honoring her father “My dad’s addiction took us away from each other for many years,” she says. “It was part of our estrangement. I’m so grateful that, before he did pass, we had a chance to spend time together. “Not everybody gets that chance when they’re dealing with loved ones who have an addiction. I know he’s looking over this new business venture and would be very proud of what it’s becoming.”

Not only is a power couple comprised of two people who are unified in love, they are unified in life. Either individually or together, they are forces within their industry. Both of them are go-getters, entrepreneurs, trailblazers, innovators and share a common vision. No matter their profession, it’s clear that power couples seek to make a contribution bigger than themselves for the greater good of humanity. For that – and so many more reasons – we present five driven duos.

Acts of Love:

MATTHEW AND LEEANN DEARING

In acting, the scene in which a future romantic couple meets for the first time is called a meet cute – and Matthew and Leeann Dearing certainly have a fitting real-life meet cute. In 2007, the actors met starring opposite each other in a play, both sensing almost right away that this was “it.” They got married in 2008, at just 24 and 26 years old, so in many ways they grew up together, both personally and professionally. Since 2007, The Dearings have owned Dearing Studio, an actors’ training facility where they have coached thousands of students, many of whom have gone on to roles in TV and film. Beyond that, they are both working actors who stay busy in Arizona’s commercial market, with credits that include ads such as GoDaddy for the Super Bowl, Discount Patio and Grand Canyon University. Even their two young children have followed in their footsteps. But it wasn’t bright lights from the start. The Dearings began their business by teaching acting classes out of a doctor’s office lobby during off-hours. The tiny (but free) space allowed them to save money to lay a foundation for a dream much bigger than the two of them – inspiring others to pursue their own dreams. It’s a dream rooted in The Dearings’ belief that there is work to be done in the Valley’s acting industry, and they intend to leave it better than they found it. With a vision of never-ending growth, The Dearings say that love is at the core of what they do. The couple’s mission is to spread light and love into the acting industry and the world, while always remaining curious and open to innovation. Throughout their journey, a few constants have remained: sharing the same

passions and dreams, working as a team, and pushing each other to be better while still loving each other exactly where they are, their definition of a power couple. “There are no limitations to where we may end up and what we are capable of doing, but wherever we are – mentally, SEPTEMBER 2017 |

physically, emotionally and spiritually – we choose to be grateful,” The Dearings say. “We both still enjoy our marriage, 10 years in. That takes attention and effort, but the payoff is incredible. You are the playwright of your life – manifest success, joy and get creative!”

Leading the Way:

LUKE AND NAJLA KAYYEM What’s meant to be will be – so is the love story between Luke and Najla Kayyem, who met in seventh grade, dated throughout high school, and went their separate ways during and shortly after college, before reconnecting and marrying in 2006. Though The Kayyems are in different fields, both have made it their lifeworks to connect with, support and help others. They seek to inspire those around them to be better as they move forward toward a common goal. Truly, they are leaders of their respective packs. As the owner of management consulting firm Kayyem Marketing, Najla connects people through networking, sales and marketing, and is responsible for launching and marketing some of the country’s most notable mixed-use developments. And with more than 17 years in the fitness industry, Luke transforms lives as a master lifestyle coach, vlogger and inspirational speaker, as well as through his virtual fitness program, The Fittest Tribe Alive. He’s especially passionate about empowering men to find their sense of purpose, and hosts mastermind groups to help men become better fathers, husbands and leaders. Together, The Kayyems are fiercely committed to health living, with a focus on longevity and a higher quality of life – and making that possible for others. They have raised nearly $200,000 for local charities and organizations, including Arizona Baseball Charities, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Playworks, and Pat Tillman Foundation. The parents of two also launched a Health and Wellness Week at Desert Canyon Elementary School, which focused on the importance of exercise, wholesome food choices, and a healthcentered lifestyle. The Kayyems, who are regularly featured health and wellness experts on TV

and in national lifestyle publications, say their “glass half-full” outlook has led them to live a life full of purpose, passion and positivity while deliberately making time for their family and each other. “To us, a power couple means that we show up every day and support each SO SCOTTSDALE! |

other’s individual goals, life goals and family goals. We both do work that will create more opportunities and achievements, individually and collectively. We maintain consistency day in and day out with our beliefs, goals and follow through on our commitments.”

Empowering Couples:

AARON AND JOCELYN FREEMAN Aaron and Jocelyn Freeman are dedicated to being a new kind of power couple. Focused on creating a life and relationship of ease, alignment and being purpose-driven, they have made it their mission – and have even written a book – to redefine what “power couple” means. Having met four years ago, The Freemans each left successful careers (Aaron as a corporate engineer, Jocelyn as a nurse) to fulfill on their joint vision: to experience financial freedom and contribution through speaking, investing and mentorship, while empowering couples to fulfill their dreams together and, ultimately, lowering the divorce rate. Describing themselves as empowered, bold and purposeful, The Freemans, who have shared the stage with Tony Robbins and were nominated for Phoenix Business Journal’s 2017 “40 Under 40,” are an undeniable example of these qualities. As trained leadership coaches and even ordained ministers who officiate wedding ceremonies, The Freemans recall that as they began mentoring others, they saw their lives transform – and a business, brand and belief was built. Now, they lead speaking events, host a relationship podcast on iTunes called EmPowered Couples, host a monthly couples brunch at JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn, coach and mentor people worldwide, and are angel investors in a socially conscious business. Fittingly, their published book is titled The New Power Couple. So, how do The Freemans define the new power couple? Rather than categorized by status, influence or wealth – which are based on the perception of comparison, judgement and the idea of perfection – the new power couple is where each person is aligned with their individual desires and purpose first before joining

together to form a collaborative vision. It’s this collaboration that is so central to The Freemans’ marriage, business and service to others. “Our No. 1 value in being a power couple is our commitment to growing as individuals – physically, financially and spiritually – so that our SEPTEMBER 2017 |

relationship is an example and invitation for others to live and love full out,” they say. “As Jim Rohn has stated, ‘service to many leads to greatness’ and couples creating strong relationships, leading to a declining divorce rate, is the legacy we hope to leave.”

Tech for the World:

HAMID AND LAWDAN SHOJAEE

Changing the world through the technology space is the commitment of Hamid and Lawdan Shojaee. The couple, who met nearly 20 years ago and got married eight months later, now run two local software companies in addition to being parents of two. In 2002, Hamid founded Axosoft, a project management software used by more than 11,000 teams worldwide. During this time, Lawdan received her doctorate in physical therapy, practiced for a year, and then became the director of development for Mission Montessori School before taking over as CEO of Axosoft so Hamid could focus on running his new creation, Pure Chat, a live chat software. At the heart of their work, The Shojaees seek to create technological advancements that will outlive and outperform their life expectancy, and, ultimately, make a positive contribution. And their vision is one rooted in humanity: “We want to leave this earth better than we found it, so we build software tools that help companies like NASA, Apple, IBM and many others be better at what they do. We provide them with the hammer that allows them to build what they need.” And The Shojaees are steadfast in their mission and stand firm in their beliefs, such as advocating for greater diversity in the tech space. They launched a female empowerment campaign, #ItWasNeverADress, which went viral – appearing on BuzzFeed, The New York Times, CNN and The Huffington Post – and, subsequently, started a scholarship for females in tech at Arizona State University. The ideals of improving the tech industry and shaping future generations transfer into the collaborative, contributive

culture of their companies. The dynamic duo preaches teamwork, communication and persistence in overcoming roadblocks, especially in the ever-changing tech landscape, walking the talk of their family motto: Never give up! You get up and you work as hard as you can and that SO SCOTTSDALE! |

is all that is asked of you. “We don’t give up. When we fail, we just get back up and do it again,” The Shojaees say. “The end game is the privilege of getting up and working alongside brilliant minds and helping change the world.”

Community First:

The power of community and service to others is at the heart of Rodney Riley and Jill Krigsten Riley’s partnership. The newlyweds – they were married at Sanctuary Resort in February – are passionate about helping those in need. Though they each have busy, successful careers, they prioritize giving back and continuing to grow, individually and as a couple. Jill, an avid yogi and hiker, is a media consultant for Cox Media and a former director of sales for 12 News and 12news.com, while Rodney is the regional sales director of investor services for CBRE’s Southwest region, in addition to being selected to this year’s Valley Leadership Class and a competitive Masters cyclist. Above all, though, The Rileys are deeply devoted to bettering the community. They are wish granters for Make-AWish Arizona and also serve on the board for Florence Crittenton. Jill devotes her time to a plethora of other causes; she is a board member for Phoenix Children’s Hospital Leadership Circle and Make-AWish Arizona (and co-chair for the 2018 Wish Ball), on the Heart Ball committee, and has chaired the Dream Bags fundraiser for the Teaming Up for Girls Luncheon for the past four years. The Rileys stand as a unified team living by a shared personal truth: True power means having the ability to help the lives of others. “Our vision is to care and then care more – about anyone and anything we do in life. That means never giving up on trying to be better in every aspect of life.” Central to these ideals, The Rileys credit surrounding themselves with a

effectiveness. “One thing we often say to people who see us at events is that we don’t have any children in our house, so our charitable work takes on a significant importance. Rather than going to baseball practice and dance recitals, we have traded that time for the service of others.”

Every Body is a Work of Art Dr. Marc Malek, MD of Marc Malek Plastic Surgery

IN EVERYBODY IS a work of art. This simple yet powerful phrase is the first thing that greets visitors to the Marc Malek Plastic Surgery website. It’s placement and emphasis on ‘work of art’ is 100% intentional. “I am simply recognizing that everyone is innately beautiful. I just help patients visualize the potential that is within each of them, both figuratively and anatomically,” explains Dr. Marc Malek. Plastic surgery combines Malek’s two passions: art and science. By age 9, he already knew that plastic surgery was the right path to pursue. He received his plastic surgery and reconstructive training at the prestigious Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine. With 17 years of experience in private practice as a board certified plastic surgeon, Malek is highly sought-after by Scottsdale patients. His artisan hands focus on reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries, sculpting his patients’ ideal figures and restoring their youthful faces. His areas of specialty include body, breast and facial procedures. Malek also offers patients noninvasive treatments such as Botox, Restylane, Juvederm and numerous other injectables. Since opening his practice in 2001, Malek has continued to adhere to a very personalized and meticulous approach. From a patient’s first consultation to their final postoperative visit, Malek gives every single patient his undivided attention and support throughout the entirety of their cosmetic journey. “I truly care for my patients like my own family. I have always wanted to help people, and I feel that this profession has given me the best opportunity to utilize my skills and compassion for the interest and safety of my patients,” he says. Marc Malek Plastic Surgery’s promise is to deliver the absolute best care in terms of safety and results. Malek is a man of his word. Because of this, his practice has grown exponentially by an influx of satisfied patient referrals. You cannot find his name online without five-out-of-five stars sitting beside it. Malek was featured in the 2016 edition of Doctors of the Desert, and since then he has opened a new and advanced center

for aesthetics and skin care. The center is all inclusive, offering both surgical and noninvasive rejuvenation procedures. Malek also launched his own laboratory formulated, probiotic-based skin care line, NutriPlex Beauty, which combats aging skin. The probiotic active base is the ‘latest science’ in skin rejuvenation. This powerful ingredient is the best discovery since vitamin C. “I’m extremely excited to have just opened our new practice as it has been my long standing personal and professional dream to provide a diversity of options all in one modern, spacious and very elegantly designed setting,” Malek elaborates. As one of the leading plastic surgeons in the Valley, Malek utilizes his personal approach and mastery of sculpting to give patients the results they are looking for. With his help, patients discover the beauty within. “The boost of self confidence that I witness in each patient postoperatively absolutely gives me the greatest satisfaction.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MARC MALEK PLASTIC SURGERY, CALL 480.551.2040 OR VISIT WWW.MARCMALEKMD.COM.

Saving Skin

Dr. Anne Walter, MD, FAAD of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists

IT’S A FACT that the skin is our largest organ, so taking care of it – especially in sunny Arizona – is a major responsibility. And one that Dr. Anne Walter, founder and medical director of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists, welcomes with joy. A Board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, the Harvard graduate attended medical school at the University of Southern California. She subsequently completed an internship at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and a residency at Northwestern University, and an accredited Mohs surgery and cosmetic fellowship. Walter’s path was a dream realized from a young age. “I have wanted to be a physician since I was a toddler. My grandfather was a general surgeon, and I grew up wanting to ‘be like Poppie,’” she says. “Medicine offers a unique fulfillment that other professions cannot compete with. There is no other field where people share their lives with you in the same way.” In 2015, Walter and her husband, Keith, founded Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists. The Scottsdale practice provides expert medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatological care in a highly personalized, boutique setting. “Seeing the practice grow and getting positive feedback from patients has been very rewarding,” Walter says. “Of course, the ultimate compliment is when patients trust us with the care of their family and friends.” Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists offers a comprehensive range of services to treat any condition of the skin, hair, and nails as well as providing the latest cosmetic treatments to help patients look and feel their best. Not surprisingly, the most common reason patients visit Walter is for a skin cancer screening. “I am very passionate about all aspects of dermatology but have a special interest in skin cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment,” she says. “I pride myself on trying to make what could otherwise be a very stressful diagnosis into a positive experience for my patients. It is very rewarding to have a patient start his/her day with a cancer but leave our office knowing that they are cancer-free!” Not only is Walter passionate about skin cancer treatment,

she is highly skilled in it. “While many dermatologists may perform Mohs surgery, a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon dedicated an additional year after their dermatology residency to refining their Mohs micrographic surgery and surgical reconstruction skills,” Walter says. Patients will find that Walter offers a wealth of skin cancer prevention advice, and they’ll also find an expert who walks her talk. Though she admits she rarely used sunscreen as a collegiate water polo player, the fair-skinned physician now shields her skin with sunscreen, sun protective clothing, and a large floppy sun hat. So what keeps Walter going? “The constantly evolving science behind the skin keeps me interested and learning, and I love that each day presents a different mix of patients and challenges,” Walter says. “Equally important, it is a privilege to interact and develop relationships with patients based on mutual trust to enhance their health and well-being.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DERMATOLOGY & SKIN SURGERY SPECIALISTS, CALL 480.418.1087 OR VISIT WWW.SKINSPECIALISTSOFAZ.COM.

A Strong Foundation

Ali and Tamir Mosharrafa, MDs of Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery

A STRUCTURE CANNOT endure without a good, solid foundation. The surgeons of Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery built their practice upon three tenets: integrity, relationships and results. This foundation — known as The Mosharrafa Experience — is the reason their practice thrives. Since 1997, Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery has been serving patients in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. The practice’s board certified surgeons, Dr. Ali Mosharrafa and Dr. Tamir Mosharrafa, have 35 years of combined experience in the field and a lifetime of experience as brothers. “[Working with my brother] is a unique experience that allows for a trusted business partner each and every day,” Ali says. “[Ali] has always been the person that I look most up to,” Tamir adds, “Getting to work with him every day is an amazing blessing,” The surgeons offer all aspects of cosmetic procedures, including body contouring and breast and facial surgeries. They also do breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients or women with an increased genetic risk of a breast cancer diagnosis. Within the doctors’ practice is Mosharrafa Skin Rejuvenation Center, offering patients medical grade skin care products and aesthetic treatments to help turn back the hands of time. When it comes to their patients, the doctors go above and beyond. Their concierge style service grants patients 24/7 access to the doctors directly. The surgeons get to know their patients by fostering relationships built on trust and understanding their personal struggles and goals. At every preoperative, operative and postoperative visit, patients receive the doctors’ full time and attention. “It is impossible to operate on a stranger, which is why we take the time to get to know each of our patients,” Tamir explains. With modern plastic surgical techniques, performed with precision and expertise, both doctors help patients look as good as they feel. There is no better feeling in the world to either of them than helping improve the overall quality of a patient’s life.

Why improve the quality of life for one person when you can impact the lives of many? In an effort to be more effective giving back to the Valley community, the surgeons co-founded Beauty for Good, a 501c(3) non-profit organization. The practice donates a portion of proceeds from every cosmetic surgery they perform to Beauty for Good. Through Beauty for Good, the surgeons provide monetary support to and create awareness for organizations like The Phoenix Dream Center, Prevent Child Abuse Arizona and Singleton Moms. “Cosmetic surgery is a beautiful thing when it improves the life of one person. What an even greater experience it is when it improves the lives of many,” Tamir shares. Since moving to the Valley — Ali in 1996 and Tamir in 2004 — the Mosharrafa surgeons and brothers have left an imprint on the lives of their patients and on the Phoenix-metro community. Their foundation is one that can endure. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MOSHARRAFA PLASTIC SURGERY, CALL 602.513.8133 OR VISIT WWW.MOSHARRAFA.COM.

Making Miracles

Dr. Millie Behera, MD, FACOG, FRCSC of Bloom Reproductive Institute MOST PEOPLE DREAM of having children, and for those who find it doesn’t come as easy, Dr. Millie Behera, the medical director and founder of Bloom Reproductive Institute, helps makes those dreams a reality. Given this, you could say Behera, who has been practicing reproductive medicine for more than 10 years and is also an adjunct faculty member at University of Arizona and Duke University, is a miracle maker of sorts – and it’s a task the compassionate, kind-hearted physician doesn’t take lightly. Having completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and fertility at Duke University followed by practicing academic medicine there, Behera founded Bloom Reproductive Institute in 2015 to address the unique needs of fertility patients and their health care challenges on a more personalized level. “We wanted patients to have a place where they feel comfortable and supported in every aspect of their fertility treatment, with a team of providers who are not only experts but have genuine compassion,” says Behera, who is board-certified in both OB/GYN and reproductive endocrinology and fertility. Behera specializes in all aspects of these vocations, including in vitro fertilization, genetic testing, egg freezing/fertility preservation, and fertility enhancing surgery. The practice’s success rates are among the highest nationwide, even higher than the national average, and still rising. Behera attributes this to the practice’s state-ofthe-art IVF laboratory technology and expertise. The personalized approach to fertility is also a major factor in patients’ success rates and feeling at ease throughout their journey. “Each couple or person is different, and they deserve a unique treatment plan. We aim to create a unique bond with each patient where they feel supported, have their questions answered, and can speak with us about anything. We are all dedicated to our patients and their dream of becoming parents.” Behera and her practice’s philosophy is summarized by the four Es: Expertise, Experience, Ethics and Empathy, all of which are evident in the way Behera – a mother of four herself – handles the delicate situation faced by patients trying to conceive.

Like any career in medicine, fertility can be rife with challenges, yet these trying challenges also present the greatest reward for Behera. “I love taking on each challenge as it comes, as difficult as it may be, as the reward is even greater when we are able to overcome complex health issues to achieve a successful pregnancy with a healthy baby.” It’s clear that the evolution of Bloom Reproductive Institute and Behera’s patients continues to, well, bloom. “My favorite part of the journey is the moment I get to meet babies after they are born,” Behera says. “It feels like we are always connected and we are able to watch that baby grow from a tiny egg to the first little heartbeat to the precious little child in front of me. “The most rewarding aspect is helping bring new life into this world as we help patients achieve their dream of parenthood.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BLOOM REPRODUCTIVE INSTITUTE, CALL 480.434.6565 OR VISIT WWW.FERTILITYBLOOM.COM.

Getting to the Root of the Problem

Dr. Angelina Alejandro, NMD of Core Optimal Health Solutions AS THE DAUGHTER of a dietician, Dr. Angelina Alejandro grew up eating healthy, whole foods and talking about vitamins and minerals. The first thing any one will notice about Alejandro is her passion to change people’s lives. A native of Arizona, Alejandro earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture — specifically Dietetics — at the University of Arizona. She later graduated from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe where she became a licensed Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD). “As a NMD, I can write prescription medications; however, most people come to me so they can get off of their medications due to bad side effects. I address the true underlying cause of chronic diseases rather than removing or masking a patient’s symptoms like modern medicine does,” Alejandro explains. Medications — while necessary given the right time and place — often create a false security that slowly destroys quality of life, including finances. Fueled by her passion and knowledge of plants and foods as medicine, Alejandro uses a proactive approach to help people without hurting them. “My goal is to treat the whole person. [My team and I] work together to get to the root of the problem and restore health to the system. By doing this, my patients have longevity, quality of life and can fulfill their dreams,” she says. Alejandro has been in practice for six years now. She became the owner of Scottsdale’s Core Optimal Health Solutions (COHS) this past January. “[Moving to COHS] was the best move I ever made because I can ultimately get patients better with my team and the programs that I have to offer.” The COHS team believes in the body’s innate ability to heal itself from the inside out. By providing wellness programs that utilize the four pillars to health — nutrition, detoxification, hormone balancing and fitness — Alejandro and her team empower and coach patients to take care of themselves the natural way. “We at COHS provide education, materials, classes, resources and hands-on demonstrations on various health

subjects, along with taking step-by-step action.” She adds, “This is why our patients do so well.” Alejandro also offers patients a myriad of services, including preventative care and concerns with belly fat, weight gain, stress, fatigue, diabetes, thyroid conditions, cardiovascular disease, hormone imbalances, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure, sleep disturbances, digestive issues, desires to get off medications and many more. “My team and I proactively help create individualized care with resources, support and tools patients need to succeed,” Alejandro states. And succeed they do! Alejandro’s dedication to holistic care is evident with every patient she guides and supports toward better health. “I love seeing my patients transform into the people they want to become — to be healthy and stay health long term.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT CORE OPTIMAL HEALTH SOLUTIONS, CALL 480.418.2653 OR VISIT WWW.COREOHS.COM.

Artistry & Compassion

Dr. Shepherd Green Pryor V, MD, FACS of Valley Facial Plastic Surgery TO SOME, Dr. Shepherd Green Pryor V is known as The Nose Whisperer – and it’s no wonder why. As the founder of Valley Facial Plastic Surgery, he’s double board-certified in head/neck surgery and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and he takes great pride in helping his patients achieve lasting, life-changing results. “It’s an incredibly rewarding opportunity to return someone back to their original appearance after a skin cancer operation, a facial trauma, a nasal fracture, or just the standard problems we all experience with facial aging,” says Pryor, who completed a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of California Davis Medical Center, honing his skills in cosmetic surgery and helping correct major facial defects, before opening his artistic-based Scottsdale practice. Most commonly, patients visit Pryor for nasal injuries including nasal fractures as well as septal deviations and breathing-related problems, but, naturally, many of his patients are also interested in altering the appearance of the nose. Pryor recognizes the desire patients have to look and feel their best, especially in today’s youth- and beauty-focused culture, and he is dedicated to providing an individualized approach to restoring and enhancing patients’ natural beauty. In fact, he says 75 percent of patients will also undergo primary or revision rhinoplasty. With surgery, of course, many patients feel nervous. Though they can rest assured they’re in good hands. Pryor and his assistant – Jocelynn Fintak, his skin care expert, surgery-scheduling extraordinaire, and right-hand gal – take a compassionate approach to these life-altering decisions. “Surgery is scary, but at some point, it’s important to hand off that anxiety to me,” Pryor says. “Patients know upon meeting any qualified and skilled surgeon if things will go right. I truly believe in patients relying on their ‘gut feeling.’ It’s almost always right.” This philosophy of “excellent and empathetic care” is evident – Pryor seeks to build relationships with his patients so that they gain not only a physician and surgeon, but also a friend and

confidant who always has their best interest at heart. “I love being able to help people, and the artistry of being able to work with my hands,” he says. “One of the most rewarding comments a patient can make is when they inform me they want to refer a family member. It’s the biggest compliment one can give for a job well done.” Throughout his career, Pryor has used his expertise to give back and be an innovator in his field. He’s traveled to China to help children with facial deformities, and he remains committed in his humanitarian efforts to charitable causes locally – and in pioneering developments in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Even with all of this, Pryor is an avid trail runner and a family man at heart – and he’s even planning his greatest adventure yet, climbing Africa’s Kilimanjaro. “I have crazy fun with my wife and three kids, who are six, four and two, and trail running up the side of mountains.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT VALLEY FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY, CALL 480.614.0499 OR VISIT WWW.VALLEYFACIALPLASTICSURGERY.COM.

Simple and Affordable Solutions

Dr. Jeffrey J. Ptak, MD of Silhouette Surgical Spa

“PLASTIC SURGERY COMBINES the science of surgery and anatomy with the art of visualizing a positive physical change, therefore helping people improve their self-image and selfesteem. It’s like being a psychologist with a scalpel.” Dr. Jeffrey J. Ptak first became fascinated by human anatomy and surgery in high school. After he completed his undergraduate studies in music composition and performance at Stanford University, he took his interest in science to medical school and attended Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. He then entered a seven-year intensive general and plastic surgery residency culminating in achieving his board certification in plastic surgery in 1989. Ptak now has over 30 years of experience as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the prestigious American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Along with being a member, he is on the teaching faculty at both societies. His practice thrives on the philosophy that one’s internal sense of self can be made visible to the rest of the world without breaking the bank. Ptak offers patients safe, simple and affordable small surgical and nonsurgical solutions that allow them to attain their ideal body and self-image. In turn, patients’ self-esteem soars. As one of Scottsdale’s leading plastic surgeons, Ptak’s level of expertise is demonstrated by his extensive list of services. He offers patients everything from facial rejuvenation like facelifts, rhinoplasty and laser resurfacing to breast and body contouring procedures. He utilizes the latest techniques in fat grafting and fat transfer as well as ThermiRF, an aesthetic device that employs temperature controlled radio frequency to tighten skin. Ptak warns all of his patients to avoid one-shot makeovers and instead take “baby steps” into the possibilities that plastic surgery affords. His approach is meticulous as he takes his time explaining and detailing the options available to his patients.

In doing so, he achieves an extremely high rate of patient satisfaction. “I use a very personal and comprehensive interview process to get to know the patient and their wishes for self-improvement that often go beyond the surgical plan,” Ptak states. Ptak has been voted as a Phoenix “Top Doc” in Phoenix magazine for multiple years. Likewise, this is his second year being featured in Doctors of the Desert. Since his appearance in the 2016 edition, Ptak has added a new esthetician to his talented team who offers the latest techniques in facials, skin treatments and microneedling with human amniotic fluid. After working with patients, Ptak ensures that they will see an image of themselves in that mirror that finally matches the spirit within. “What I love most about being a plastic surgeon is getting to know each patient and helping them achieve their goals with little discomfort, cost and recovery time.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. Women Caring for Women

The physicians of Arizona Women’s Care SINCE 1998, Arizona Women’s Care has been providing comprehensive obstetric and gynecological care for women of all ages in the Valley. The practice’s five female physicians — Dr. Anne Castilla, Dr. JulieAnn Heathcott, Dr. Kelly Helms, Dr. Julie Baskin Kwatra and Dr. Ann Langer — have over 100 years of combined experience. Together, they give the utmost care and support to every patient at every phase of her life. The physicians hail from all over the country. After completing their residency training in Arizona, they all decided to call the Valley home. “The Valley of the Sun is so beautiful and a great place to put roots down that the five of us never left,” Kwatra says. The doctors were initially drawn to obstetrics and gynecology given its diverse nature. It is an amalgam of various specialties, from primary care to surgery to delivering babies. The doctors distinguish themselves from other OB/GYNs by not only monitoring a patient’s physical health, but mental and spiritual wellness too. At Arizona Women’s Care, attention is drawn to the whole woman and all of her needs. “We became passionate about women’s health during our training and remain fully committed to it today,” Castilla and Helms explain. The Arizona Women’s Care mission is simple and packs a powerful punch: to provide the most up-to-date, patient-centered care in a warm and inviting environment. By resisting the corporatization of medicine — a common theme in medicine today — the physicians forge lifelong relationships with their patients. “We have structured our practice in a way that enables us to really get to know our patients and be with them at some of the most awe-inspiring moments of their lives,” Langer continues, “It’s fun!” The doctors utilize traditional and cutting-edge technologies for routine and high risk obstetrical care. They offer patients everything related to gynecology and pregnancy as well as hormone replacement therapy and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries. Castilla, Heathcott and Langer all perform SculpSure,

a cosmetic procedure that reduces body fat without surgery or any recovery time. Arizona Women’s Care was one of the first practices in Scottsdale to offer Novasure endometrial ablations and the breakthrough MonaLisa Touch. Novasure is a quick procedure that resolves abnormal vaginal bleeding. MonaLisa Touch laser therapy treatment is designed to reverse some of the negative side effects associated with menopause such as painful intercourse, vaginal dryness and urinary incontinence. Doctors Castilla, Heathcott, Helms, Kwatra and Langer are women who get women. Whether they are welcoming new life into the world or performing a routine pap smear, the doctors are devoted to putting the health and well being of every woman first. “The five of us love a lot of things about this job, but delivering babies is definitely near the top of the list. It never gets old,” Heathcott smiles. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ARIZONA WOMEN’S CARE, CALL 480.451.8454 OR VISIT WWW.ARIZONAWOMENSCARE.COM.

Dr. Alexandra Mayer, ND of Ethos Integrative Medicine DR. ALEXANDRA MAYER is an advocate for living a healthful, happy life. By providing individualized healthcare solutions, she helps patients realize their full potential so that they can live a life they love. “[My business partner and I] believe that patients want to be healthy so that they can do the things that make them happy in life. Whether that’s having the energy to play with their kids, travel the world or compete in a Crossfit competition — if you love something, we want to help you do it,” Mayer elaborates. Her passion for health led her to Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine where she learned the art of combining traditional diagnostics and treatment with a more natural approach. “My passion is health, and my mission is to provide my patients with medical options that get results and fit with their busy lifestyles,” she says. Understanding busy schedules, EIM operates at various times throughout the week so that health is attainable for everyone. Mayer specializes in women’s health and medical aesthetics. She treats women with concerns ranging from hormonal issues and hypothyroidism to anxiety. Her love of aesthetics comes from her aunt who owned a spa during her childhood. “[My aunt’s] knowledge of aesthetics changed my skin, and my overall confidence. I love being able to offer my patients more long term, natural looking solutions that make them feel better and more confident about themselves,” Mayer states.

By focusing on regenerative treatments that use Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Mayer is able to treat problem areas like hyperpigmentation and acne scars. She also offers hair restoration for patients experiencing thinning hair who want to stop hair loss and encourage regrowth. Mayer always goes the extra mile when it comes to her patients. She truly hears them out and addresses any concerns they may have. She also provides unparalleled support and encouragement throughout her patients’ healthful journey. “We have fun at our office. We like to get to know our patients, laugh with them and be a part of their lives,” Mayer continues, “What’s important to us is being part of our patients’ team by celebrating the wins and helping them navigate their challenges. We have clear communication with everyone that walks through our practice’s doors so they understand what is going on with their health.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ETHOS INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE, CALL 480.360.0115 OR VISIT WWW.ETHOSSCOTTSDALE.COM.

Veteran Turned Holistic Dentist Dr. Jason A. Jones, DMD of Pure Smiles

“I LIKE TO SAY, ‘Be kind to your dentist. He has fillings too.’” Dr. Jason A. Jones is no stranger to dental work. He understands the hesitation often associated with visiting the dentist. “I have had some painful experiences as a child and didn’t like almost all of my dentists growing up, so I know what patients are going through,” he recalls. His mission as a holistic dentist is to create healthful smiles by minimizing any discomfort. “I spend quality time giving my full attention and it shows in the results,” Jones says. Jones served in the US Navy for six years and was deployed overseas three times. After leaving the military, he attended Penn State for his Bachelor of Science degree in premedicine and received his doctorate degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He migrated to Santa Monica where he worked in a hospital treating compromised patients, including those with oral cancers. “Working in a hospital made me want to help patients gain overall health beyond the oral cavity,” he explains. Four years ago, he relocated to Phoenix to be closer to his in-laws and benefit from the sunshine as an outdoor enthusiast. In his spare time he enjoys rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking the Valley’s scenic trails. “The outdoors here is quite amazing, especially coming from the Pacific Northwest, [which is where I am originally from]. I plan to be in Arizona for a long time,” he states. Jones opened Pure Smiles — a center for advanced and holistic dentistry — in Scottsdale this past January. He works alongside his dental hygienist wife, Jenna Jones. Their mini goldendoodle, Penelope Von Doodle, is currently being trained to be a certified therapy dog for the practice’s patients. “[Opening my own practice] has been an exciting and stressful process, but we love every moment of it!” Pure Smiles offers exceptional service with a dedication to comfort and compassion. Jones and his team carefully assess each procedure and select high-quality products to help

preserve and protect each patient’s overall well being. “I look at the body as a whole and relate it to the dentition and vice versa.” He continues, “I strive in making sure the patient is receiving the best treatment in their best interest.” In additional to general care, Jones’s expertise ranges from safe amalgam removal to ozone therapy and dental implants. Admittedly, smile rehabilitation and surgical cases are his favorite. He uses Platelet Rich Plasma/Fibrinogen, a concentrated source of blood plasma with different growth factors, and cutting edge technologies, including a 3D cone beam imaging and intra-oral scanner, to perform minimally invasive and painless procedures. “I love helping others in route to health and watching patients see a new side of themselves. I work closely with other specialists locally and, as a team, we can help get patients on track to a healthy smile and body.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT PURE SMILES, CALL 480.585.1612 OR VISIT WWW.PURESMILESAZ.COM.

A Leading Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Sumer L. Daiza, MD of Plastic Surgery Center of Scottsdale

THE NUMBER OF women in the medical field is rising; yet, women continue to be underrepresented in the field of surgery. Dr. Sumer L. Daiza, a double board certified plastic surgeon, is a leading lady in the operating room with over 15 years of experience. Daiza believes there are good female and male plastic surgeons just like any other profession, but that being a female has some advantages. Her patients, male and female alike, will often tell her that they feel more comfortable with a female surgeon because they sense a better connection. Daiza has a keen eye and ear for attention. Her practice, Plastic Surgery of Scottsdale, is a boutique style practice. This allows her to be 100 percent dedicated to her patients 100 percent of the time. She even gives patients her personal number. “I am very hands-on and give my patients a lot of one-on-one time. Every patient has my cell phone number so as to feel comfortable that he or she may reach me anytime,” she explains. Being present throughout every patient’s procedure — from first consultation to postoperative visit — is this surgeon’s top priority. Bonds quickly forge between Daiza and her patients since it takes a collaborative effort between them to reach a final goal. In fact, some of her relationships span through lineages! “What I do is very personal and patients become like family to me. I have seen generations of the same family — the grandparents, parents and children,” she smiles. Her practice is one in which patients find comfort due to the philosophy set in place: treat patients like family. Daiza believes it is a privilege to be chosen to perform a life changing procedure for a patient. For entrusting her, she provides the safest and highest quality of medical care that delivers the most natural appearing results. From her outstanding patient reviews to accolades in the media — she has been voted as a Phoenix “Top Doc” by

her peers for 10 years and was featured in the 2016 edition of Doctors of the Desert — Daiza is a surgeon patients trust for optimal results. “We are very excited for our new offerings this year. We are expanding our staff, adding an aesthetician, and will offer new services like vaginal rejuvenation, hair restoration and laser services,” Daiza comments. Daiza performs all aspects of cosmetic surgery like breast, body and face procedures. She is known for the mommy makeover, which involves operating on the areas most affected by pregnancy. She also offers a range of cosmetic injectables done personally by her, including Botox, Dysport, Restylane, Juvéderm, Voluma and Volbella as well as chemical peels. Daiza is an aficionado of cosmetic surgery. She shows up for her patients, both in office and over the phone, and acts as role model for women aspiring to pursue this speciality. 20/20 Care

Dr. Robert Reid McCulloch, MD of Horizon Eye Specialists & Lasik Center

THEY SAY THE EYES are the window to the soul, and for Dr. Robert Reid McCulloch of Horizon Eye Specialists & Lasik Center, the statement couldn’t be truer. A native Arizonan, McCulloch has been practicing in the Valley since 1988. After graduating from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska, he completed an ophthalmology residency and a fellowship in corneal and external disease at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. But McCulloch says coming home to Arizona was an easy choice – and a career in eye care seemed to always be a natural fit. As a kid, McCulloch loved working with his hands and was fascinated by science. “My passion for good eyesight started in the fifth grade when the teacher noticed I was ‘squinting.’ An eye test let my parents know I was nearsighted,” he says. “With my first pair of glasses, suddenly I could see the leaves on the trees. But even more important – as an aspiring baseball player – I could now see a fast ball and my batting average soared! My love affair with vision took off from there.” As the senior cataract surgeon at Horizon Eye Specialists, McCulloch is responsible for mentoring other doctors. Together, McCulloch and his team have seen more than 300,000 patients for comprehensive eye care, from annual exams to LASIK, corneal transplant and glaucoma surgeries. McCulloch himself has performed more than 10,000 LASIK and refractive treatments, as well as 30,000 cataract or corneal transplant procedures. “This amount of experience helps with understanding challenging situations and how to improve patients’ lives,” he says. “Often, using cataract, LASIK or a corneal surgery, patients can have their sight corrected despite being told in the past that nothing could be done.” As a specialist in refractive surgery, he also serves as medical director for the practice’s LASIK center and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. Beyond these credentials, Horizon Eye Specialists and McCulloch believe in “Eye Care Like No Other,” practicing a

patient-first philosophy while striving to be at the forefront of technology and surgical skills. He notes that it’s this dedication to cutting-edge technology that differentiates him from others in his field. In fact, he is the first MD in Arizona to perform the newest cataract lens exchange procedure, the Symfony intraocular lens, which is the only extended depth-of-focus lens for cataract sufferers. Truly, McCulloch’s passion and purpose is being able to give the gift of sight. “I have always felt so passionate about giving people good eyesight. Repairing damaged eyes is tremendously rewarding to me. A patient’s smile after having LASIK or after removing a cataract is beyond fulfilling. A corneal transplant changes a life forever!” And in return, he feels the effects of this gift. “I am so fortunate to have the most wonderful job any person could have,” McCulloch says. “Every day I can bring delight and happiness to people. How extraordinary is that?” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HORIZON EYE SPECIALISTS & LASIK CENTER, CALL 602.467.4966 OR VISIT WWW.HORIZONLASERVISION.COM.

Road to Recovery

Dr. Reyes Topete, MD of Fountain Hills Recovery

THE TREATMENT TEAM of Fountain Hills Recovery (FHR) is dedicated to helping clients achieve long term sobriety. They do this by building recovery plans unique to the needs of every person and providing them with the tools necessary to succeed. “It is such a profound and rewarding feeling to see an individual progress and discover their new, sober life. This is exactly why I became an addictionologist and why I love working with FHR,” explains Dr. Reyes Topete. Native of Arizona, Topete stayed in his beloved home state for his studies and residency. He attended Arizona State University for undergrad, University of Arizona for medical school and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. During his residency, Topete developed a passion for working with those affected by addiction and a curiosity about the science of addiction. He specialized in addiction medicine in 2008, is a full time addictionologist and an integral part of the FHR’s team. As FHR’s Medical Director, Topete helps clients with the medical aspect of their substance use disorders. By providing leadership and guidance to the center’s medical personnel, Topete ensures that every client’s road to recovery is safe and effective. “We always strive to assure our clients receive the highest standard of care both medically and clinically,” he says. Collaborative communication between client and treatment team is central to FHR’s approach. Topete is joined by the center’s clinical director, primary therapists and experienced staff. Together, they conduct an initial assessment of every client’s current situation before formulating a workable plan for recovery. “After our initial assessment, a variety of therapeutic approaches are available to maximize the probability of a positive long term outcome for the client,” Topete comments. FHR offers 30, 60 and 90 day programs with two living facilities. The facilities are fully stocked with luxury amenities — including an infinity pool, dry sauna, onsite chiropractic services

and more — to promote healing and wellness during recovery. Clients receive a ‘continuum of care,’ as Topete calls it. This continuum of care involves daily interactions with other clients and the center’s team. From a patient’s first day, FHR It is a community of support and encouragement. While working with addiction clients has its challenges, Topete cannot imagine doing anything else but this kind of work. “It is difficult seeing a patient relapse and the destructive effects of the disease, but the most rewarding thing about my job is seeing a former patient in sobriety years later,” he says. Ask any one of Topete’s patients, and they will tell you that he is professional, caring and competent. He understands his patient’s individual needs and dedicates himself to helping them become sober and stay sober. With over 20 years of experience in the field, Topete means business when it comes to helping someone on their road to recovery. Something to Smile About Dr. Ken Danyluk, DMD, MS, FRCD(c) of Hidden Braces Boutique

DR. KEN DANYLUK, or Dr. D as his patients call him, is a people person. People are the reason he pursued dentistry and orthodontics in the first place. “I love helping people, and always wanted to do something with my hands that would have a positive impact on people’s lives,” he explains. He received speciality training in both dentistry and orthodontics at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. Danyluk practiced as a general dentist for over seven years before pursuing orthodontics full time. With the combination of general dentistry experience and specialty certification in lingual braces, he is able to provide his patients with unmatched comprehensive care. “The many years training with lingual-only specialists around the world and my experience as a cosmetic dentist made this specialization a natural fit,” Danyluk admits. Danyluk has worked in the Valley as a family orthodontist for over 17 years specializing in lingual braces. He opened his new practice, Hidden Braces Boutique, which focuses exclusively on lingual (hidden) braces to rave reviews this past March. Danyluk has created a warm and open environment full of understanding and thoughtful professionals who provide excellent and individualized care. Danyluk and his team strive to ‘think around’ obstacles and adapt treatment to individual situations. They achieve this by taking their work extremely seriously… “...but I don’t take myself too seriously,” Danyluk laughs. Danyluk is often sought out by patients from all over the region for his expertise in lingual braces. Lingual braces are positioned behind the teeth, or lingual side of the teeth, and provide a quick and discreet way to perfect one’s smile. Lingual braces can treat any level of case complexity as well as yield the same results in the same amount of time as traditional braces — minus all the metal. With more than 2,000 successful lingual patient cases, Danyluk’s practice is the largest lingual-only

practice in all of North America. “Working closely with successful lingual-only practices in Paris, London, Geneva and Tokyo, we are proud to provide lingual treatment expertise and experience that is amongst the highest in North America,” he says. Danyluk now brings his wealth of knowledge in lingual orthodontic procedures to this new location in the Valley, where he admits that there is no better place to work and live. “The weather, diversity of people from all parts of the world and the combined vibe of California laid-back and Midwest work ethic makes the Valley second to none.” At the end of the day, Danyluk and his team are devoted to giving patients something to smile about. “I want to take good care of people, open up to them and work together. When they understand our attention to detail and level of expertise — the smiles naturally follow!” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HIDDEN BRACES BOUTIQUE, CALL 480.248.7123 OR VISIT WWW.HIDDENBRACESBOUTIQUE.COM.

By now, back-to-school time is well underway. But you don’t have to be a student to enjoy literary escapism at any of the five branches of the Scottsdale Public Library system. In fact, this month marks the 10th anniversary of the Arabian Library’s public dedication. With a LEED Silver certification, the 20,875-square-foot space is an architectural wonder that’s built in the likeness of Northern Arizona’s desert slot canyons, echoing the angular shape of the sandstone crevices that open skyward. Outdoors, a courtyard is shaded by a large palo verde tree, while indoors, rows of books intermingle with plenty of cozy spaces for reading. WHO’S YOUR TEAM?

When it comes to football, some Valley bars choose sides BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

A

re you ready for some football? How about some fanfare for your hometown team? While, rightfully so, many local bars and restaurants bleed Arizona Cardinals red this time of year, there is no denying the Valley is still very much an area of transplants from across the U.S., many of which bring their hometown allegiances with them. As such, many local venues cater to specific fan bases during football season. With that, follow your team to their loyal watering hole!

DIERKS BENTLEY’S WHISKEY ROW: Denver Broncos Going into its fourth season as the only officially sanctioned Broncos bar in Arizona, Whiskey Row Scottsdale sees hundreds of the 2,500 Arizona Broncos fan club members each week during the season. On game day, they offer drink specials on beer and specialty cocktails as well as seasonal Denver-inspired menu items including the “Mile High Burger” and an orange queso dip complete with blue corn chips to reflect the team colors. The bar also raffles off Broncos memorabilia during the games, and whenever the Broncos score, the in-house DJ spins the team fight song. www.dierkswhiskeyrow.com. HAROLD’S CAVE CREEK CORRAL: Pittsburg Steelers This popular Western bar and restaurant is affectionately known as “Heinz Field West” during football season. On any given Sunday, expect 700 Steelers fans – towels and all – cheering on their team on one of the 25 flat-screen TVs while a teamthemed DJ plays more than 40 Steelers songs throughout the day. Not only does the bar transform into all things black and gold, their menu does too, boasting “Primanti Brothers” sandwiches, “Ben Roethlis(burger)s,” Iron City beer, and other fan favorites. And, they give back while cheering as well; Harold’s estimates they’ve raised more than $100,000 for local nonprofits as a result of raffles, silent auctions and other fundraisers held during games. www.haroldscorral.com. SANDBAR MEXICAN GRILL: Green Bay Packers Cheeseheads, rejoice! Sandbar Desert Ridge has been an official Green Bay Packers bar since opening six years ago. Like Harold’s, their menu transforms (the cheese curds are a must) each Sunday to reflect Packers fans’ favorite game day comfort foods. And, in further homage to Green Bay’s home state of Wisconsin, Sandbar is also the go-to destination in the North Valley for University of Wisconsin Badgers fans on Saturday. www.sandbaraz.com. SOCIAL TAP: Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants Social Tap owner Steve McDonald is a loud and proud East Coast native who takes pride in giving both Ravens and Giants fans a place to call home every Sunday, complete with foot-long New York hot dogs and Maryland crab cakes. In fact, they get so into providing fans with a “hometown” experience they bring in specialty East Coast ingredients and seasonings for a wholly authentic experience. The 90-inch flat-screen TVs don’t hurt either. www.socialtapeatery.com.

CREATING UNDERWATER FINE ART Jessica Harnisch captures dream-like portraits through her camera lens

A

rizona native Jessica Harnisch found her niche through photography and her love for scuba diving. Her combination of passions led her to open Blue Dune Studio, where she produces stellar underwater portraits and captures beauty through her camera lens. Harnisch found her love for photography early in life and opened her first photography business in 2008. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until last year, during an epic dive trip, that she was inspired to open her aquatic studio, which launched last summer and offers stunning maternity, mother-daughter, couples and beauty photo sessions. Inspired by classical painters’ works, the photographer aims to capture emotive images, merging reality with a bit of fantasy.

BY OFELIA MONTELONGO

“The underwater world is something most people don’t get to see or experience, but I think it’s magical,” she says. She describes her artwork, which is printed on textured fine art paper, as ethereal, enchanted, flowy, unique and timeless. To create her mermaid-like images, Harnisch uses her own pool as her underwater photography studio during the summer. In the winter, the photos are taken in an indoor pool, which is typically 12 feet deep. She stays beneath the water for up to 45 seconds at a time, thanks to wrapping a weighted belt around her torso. When asked about her favorite aspect of underwater art, Harnisch states that she loves to get a glimpse into something we don’t see or notice every day. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

| SEPTEMBER 2017

“Every shoot is different. Even if I use the same model and the same dress, the water does what it wants to do,” Harnisch says. “It can’t be repeated. There is a certain amount of beauty in that uncertainty.” Capturing beauty in a nontraditional environment has been the photographer’s main goal. However, earlier this year, she started a body empowerment campaign, This Beautiful Body, inspired by the many women she had photographed over the years who felt self-conscious about their bodies. “Seeing all of these beautiful women convinced there was something wrong with the way they looked really hurt my heart,” she says. Part of the campaign is to tell the story of all types of women through her website. “The more stories I can tell, the more women feel empowered to look at themselves with more positivity,” she says. In July, Harnisch had her first gallery exhibition with 11 different mesmerizing underwater images. She expects to showcase her work in other cities during the year. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Paulina Martinez of El Panzón y Frida BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

At just 26, Paulina Martinez serves as executive chef of El Panzón y Frida, borrowing from the art, language, folklore and beliefs of many different backgrounds and cultures across Mexico to develop her internationally inspired menu. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO COOK? I was extremely shy as a child. As a result, I initially turned to painting as my primary outlet for self-expression. One day, I tried my hand in the kitchen and was surprised to find just how similar cooking was to painting in how it allowed me to express myself. I was hooked. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BIG BREAK. Actually, it was right here with owners of El Panzón y Frida! Three years ago, they recruited me to take on a chef role at their former venue, Ricky’s Taco Shop. When they closed Ricky’s to reimagine it into El Panzón, which pays tribute to famed Mexican artists (and lovers) Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, I was given the chance to marry my passion for food with my native country (I was born and raised in Sonora, Mexico) and a concept based on my beloved art. It was all very full circle. HOW DOES THE MENU REFLECT KAHLO AND RIVERA? I like to conceptualize each dish based on either Kahlo’s feminine point of view or Rivera’s masculine machismo. For example, I use real flowers and delicate flavors in my sweet potato house gyozas in a nod to Kahlo, whereas I serve our hearty rib-eye steak on a tough salt rock with bold chimichurri to reflect Rivera. ANY PERSONAL FAVORITE OR LEAST FAVORITE FOODS? I love all fresh produce, and though I don’t hate dairy, my lactose intolerance makes it hard to enjoy. WHAT WOULD WE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I am a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo! El Panzón y Frida, 7323 E. Shoeman Lane, Scottsdale; 480.659.1544; www.elpanzonyfrida. com.

KUDOS TO THE CAIPIRINHA

Brazil’s splendidly simple national cocktail BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

C

arvalho’s Brazilian Kitchen is a celebration of co-founder and Brazilian diplomat Ruth Marsteller’s heritage, and is an homage to her late father, Major Jovelino de Carvalho, who grew up in the Brazilian Amazon before serving in World War II. “The war took him to Italy, where he took up cooking,” says co-founder Phil Marstellern. “I fell in love with Ruth while working in the Amazon nearly 30 years ago, and we put that love into every element of this menu.” This love is evident in Carvalho’s signature cocktail: the caipirinha ($9). “The caipirinha, pronounced kaipee-reen-ya, is Brazil’s national cocktail,” Phil says. “It was originally developed for medicinal purposes in the late 1800s, but it was eventually tweaked and used more for fun than function.” To make it, pure cane sugar and lime are muddled in a glass – twisting the lime so the peels release their fragrant oils – and then cachaça, Brazil’s native spirit, is added. The contents are shaken to dissolve the sugar and then poured unstrained into a rocks glass with heaps of ice. “It tastes like a cross between a refreshing mojito and a limeade with a hint of bitterness, and it’s nearly impossible to have just one,” says Phil, noting Carvalho’s also has several variations, including watermelon and mango. 2018 AUDI A4 The German maker’s excellent execution of a luxury compact sedan BY JIM PRUETER

L

ast year for 2017, Audi introduced its fifth generation A4 sport sedan, which first appeared in 1995, replacing the aging Audi A80. Unless you park it side-by-side with the outgoing A4, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to discern a difference. Though don’t let the similar looks deceive you – the A4 is thoroughly redesigned, rides on a completely new platform, and has a slightly larger body. For 2018, the A4 is almost exclusively a carryover model from last year with the addition of now-standard heated front seats, which were optional last year. The A4 slots below Audi’s midsize A6 sedan and above the subcompact A3, sharing family resemblance and visual styling cues. Like all Audi products, the look

inside and out is that of tailored perfection; like an Armani suit, it’s never out of style. The A4 is one of the smaller four-door sedans in its class, but it is highly refined. Build quality is superb, and it comes loaded with the latest in advanced active safety technology. It doesn’t take much time behind the wheel of the all-aluminum A4 to appreciate the significant improvements. But let’s be up front here – you’re going to pay for all this goodness. Powered by what I believe is the best 2.0-liter, turbo, four-cylinder engine in the industry, performance is 252 horsepower. While it’s not the most in its class, it’s still capable, well-intentioned, athletic and pleasingly adequate. It connects to a seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system. I didn’t like the high-tech shifter, finding it awkward to shift forward for reverse and push a button for park. Slightly wider and longer than the previous generation A4, interior space remains compromised in terms of leg, head and shoulder room. But that doesn’t detract from Audi’s traditional spectacular decor. Every shape is purposely and elegantly sculptured, while the switchgear is gorgeous and machined to operate with surgical precision. Add in perfectly contoured leather seats, the Bang & Olufsen surround sound system, an LED interior lighting package, and the state-of-the-art Audi virtual cockpit (a full glass digital display that replaces traditional analog gauges) and you’re seated in one of the most magnificent driving environments. On the road, the ride was noticeably improved; it was quieter and supple, yet controlled. Handling also felt secure; even when driving aggressively on twisty Arizona roads, body roll was held in check. Overall, the new fifth generation A4 emerges as an excellent execution of a luxury compact sedan, thoroughly delivering the goods when compared to the Mercedes-Benz C Class, BMW 3-Series and Lexus IS competitors.

The city of Leipzig reveals the beauty and rich history of East Germany BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

Discovering Leipzig

ctober is a popular time to visit Germany. The summer vacation season is over, and the hillsides are awash in brilliant shades of color. The fall harvest in this country, famous for its wine and beer, is underway. Though Oktoberfest celebrations are often a draw, avoid the raucous crowds and party atmosphere in the beer halls and take to what was once the playgrounds of royalty in the state of Saxony.

Leipzig Old Town Hall

Saxony, once one of Germany’s richest areas, was home to such historical figures as Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn and Martin Luther. It was here, 500 years ago, that the Reformation and Protestantism were born. But after World War II, Saxony fell under Soviet control and became part of the German Democratic Republic. Closed off from the West for 50 years, its largest cities were in ruins and its historical shrines

destroyed. Without any controls, pollution dirtied its rivers and skies. Today, as part of a reunified Germany, Saxony is once again flourishing. At its heart, the city of Leipzig – dubbed “The New Berlin” by many – is one of Germany’s most popular tourist destinations, restoring the grandeur and magic that was always part of this area. Saxony, located in the far eastern part of Germany, sits near the Polish and

Czech borders. From the U.S., the best way to get to Saxony is to fly into Berlin and take the fast – and easily accessible – train into Leipzig. A quick 15-minute taxi ride from the airport puts you at the front steps of the train station, where everything is clearly marked in both German and English. In about two hours, you’ll arrive in the city of Leipzig. Another 10-minute taxi ride will get you into the city center.

Exploring Downtown The best way to experience Leipzig is to book a room in the walkable downtown. INNSIDE Leipzig is an ideal hotel while exploring the art, culture and food of this great city. Despite the building’s neoclassical facade, the hotel is cutting-edge on the interior with top-of-the-line amenities. Rooms and suites are modern, and common areas are chic, with room to work and relax. Room rates include full breakfasts daily. Just a block away from the hotel is the old town, filled with elegant arcades and courtyards that have defined the architecture and style of Leipzig for more than 500 years. Don’t miss the MädlerPassage located near the Old Town Hall, which is home to the restaurant Auerbachs Keller, where you can order a classic German meal with a beer or glass of German wine. It was here that famed

Panorama Tower

writer and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent time. While in the old town, be sure to step inside St. Nicholas Church. It was here, on Oct. 9, 1989, where people gathered to demand the change that eventually led to the collapse of the Berlin Wall. There is a memorial outside the church commemorating the Peaceful Revolution, where crowds chanted “we are the people,” and Leipzig became known as the Stadt der Helden (City of Heroes) for its leading role in this historical movement. One of the most famous historical Leipzig residents was the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Across the street from INNSIDE Leipzig is Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church). Founded in 1212 as a monastery, it became important SEPTEMBER 2017 |

during the reformation when Martin Luther preached there. Later, it was Bach’s home church where he composed music for the choir, and he is even buried inside. A great way to get perspective on the city, both literally and figuratively, is with a visit to Panorama Tower. Take the elevator up to the 31st floor to catch a glimpse of Leipzig from the viewing platform. The restaurant at the top, Plate of Art, serves modern creative dishes. At the tower’s base is the Paulinum, part of the Leipzig University campus. Originally the Church of St. Paul, it was the site of Luther’s final sermon in Leipzig and also the location of Bach’s magnificent organ. While the church made it through World War II relatively unscathed, it was demolished by the East German regime in 1968, taking all the artifacts down with it. The new building today outlines the original church.

Wandering Leipzig As you wander the streets of Leipzig, especially during warmer months, you’ll notice locals and visitors alike lingering at sidewalk tables to sip coffee and watch passers-by. Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum, the oldest coffee house in Germany, is in Leipzig – they have been serving up food and coffee since 1720. Save room for a favorite German after-lunch treat: eiskaffee, a delicious blend of ice cream and coffee. Beyond being a historical and cultural mecca, Leipzig is considered a playground for creative minds. Have the concierge arrange transportation for you to visit The Spinnerei, a few minutes beyond downtown. What was formerly Europe’s largest cotton mill during the 19th century is now home to galleries, more than 100 artist studios, a large art supply store, a funky artistic theater, and a coffee shop. The site is in the midst of ongoing renovations and is likely to be that way for many years to come. On your visit, you’ll be among artists from around the world who live and work on-site, as well as international visitors, including movie stars and art collectors, who show up to buy art from both known and unknown artists. ROSÉ REVOLUTION Drinking pink has never been so cool BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Kim Crawford Rosé – New Zealand Known worldwide as an industry leader in sauvignon blanc, this award-winning South African vineyard is starting to make similar waves in the rosé market thanks to this bottle, which is made from merlot grapes sourced across select vineyards in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The resulting flavor is soft and luscious with hints of watermelon and strawberry. $17.99 at Total Wine & More.

Josh Cellars Rosé – Central Coast, California In 2007, Joseph Carr launched Josh Cellars (named for his father), focused on developing wines that represent the best of California: bold, rich, approachable and balanced. Sourced from across many great California wine-growing regions, every vintage represents a labor of love. Released in recent months is this special rosé, a perfect blend of barbera, moscato and syrah with aromas of strawberries, white flowers and stone fruit. $14.99 at BevMo!

F

orget what you think you know about pink wine – especially the oft-maligned white zinfandels of your youth. All too commonly mistaken for a sugary sweet blend of red and white wines, rosés are actually made from a wide variety of grapes and can be found all around the globe in flavors from extra dry to quite sweet. Here is a look at some of our favorites from near and far, all with different blends of wine-grape varietals.

Julia’s Dazzle Pinot Gris Rosé – Walla Walla, Washington Developed by famed Long Shadows Vintners founder Allen Shoup and named after his granddaughter, this unique rosé of white pinot gris is sourced from a special block from The Benches Vineyard at Wallula in Horse Heaven Hills. Winemaker Gilles Nicault was chosen to craft this limited-production rosé for the skills he developed making wine in Provence, France. The use of pinot gris results in vibrant notes of strawberries, spice and cherry blossom. $19.99 at Total Wine & More.

Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé – South Africa At a time when most rosés were a byproduct of red wine fermentation, Mulderbosch launched a varietal of Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé from specially farmed vineyards specifically to produce rosé fruit. On arrival at the cellar, these early picked, specially selected grapes are vinified in the same manner in which an aromatic white wine would be, with the aim of producing a fresh, aromatic product. $11.99 at Total Wine & More.

Klinker Brick Grenache Rosé – Lodi, California

The Drop – Lodi, California

Made by the fifth-generation growersturned-vintners of Klinker Brick Winery, this mild yet slightly fruit-infused option is a satisfying blend of grenache, carignane, syrah, and mourvedre grapes. Neither too dry nor too sweet, there are definite hints of strawberry, grapefruit and melon, which work together on both nose and palate. $15 at Total Wine & More.

The Drop wine’s canned rosé is light and crisp with a hint of minerality – and available in trendy, convenient cans for easy transport. It is a blend of chenin blanc, zinfandel and syrah and sourced from a family-owned winery. Available in packs of four; $19.99 per pack at Arcadia Premium and DeFalco’s Italian Grocery. Chef Tomaso Maggiore’s Vegetarian Eggplant Torte ($17 at lunch, $26 at dinner) at his newest concept, Tomaso’s When in Rome, is the result of a culinary trip to northern Rome, where he was inspired by a bistro serving vegetarian lasagna. Maggiore’s variation uses sauteed eggplant, layering it five stacks high between a creamy fondue made from pecorino, Swiss and Parmesan cheeses and his famous tomato basil sauce. He pairs it with giant gnocchi and earthy porcini mushrooms, which complement the cheese and eggplant. The dish is finished with a demi-glace that perfectly balances the tartness of the tomato. www.tomasoswheninrome.com. SEPTEMBER 2017 |

+ BAR + RAMEN

fter nearly a year of anticipation, Tucson-based OBON Sushi + Bar + Ramen – a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese fare with Korean influences – has opened its doors at Scottsdale Quarter, marking its first Valley location. “My partner, Andre Joffroy, and I initially opened OBON in Tucson in 2015 after being inspired by the Obon Festival in Japan, an annual Buddhist celebration of one’s ancestors,” says co-founder Brandon Katz. “The sentiment behind the event itself – honoring life, family and fun – is at the heart of this concept.” The new OBON space in Scottsdale, which is nearly 2,800 square feet, exudes a Zen-like vibe with pale woods and large windows that fill the room with natural light. There are a mix of communal tables, booths, patio seating, and an expansive bar area. The menu was crafted by Chef Paulo Im and is a playful combination of traditional and modern techniques found in Asian cuisine. “The soul of the menu is the signature

sushi rolls, which include the Fukushu Roll made with spicy salmon, spicy tuna, spicy mayo, Sriracha and rice pearls; and the Tsunami Salmon, a combination of capers, onion, avocado and smoked kelp foam,” Katz says. “A variety of ramen selections are also available and include mouthwatering options like the OBON Ramen, which features pork belly and shoulder, bean sprouts, black garlic oil and an egg; or the Veggie Ramen, which, as the menu explains, features ‘nothing with a soul.’” Also, do not miss the steamed buns (try the fried spam bun – seriously!), spicy OBON edamame, array of crudos (the jalapeno albacore is a standout option), and “build it yourself” poke bowls. Equally as impressive is the creative cocktail program, which was developed by OBON beverage director and recent Tucson Bartender of the Year honoree, Matt Martinez. Cocktails unique to the Scottsdale location include: New Growth ($12), a snap pea gin concoction made with black pepper honey ginjo sake, and Coconut Thyme ($10), a combination of SO SCOTTSDALE! |

blended rum, coconut milk and thyme jellies. Those who’ve visited the Tucson location will also be happy to see fanfavorite cocktails, including the restaurant’s signature four “seasonal” highballs: Spring: shochu (a traditional Japanese liquor made from grains and vegetables), dill, vanilla and soda water. Summer: vodka, apples, celery and tonic water. Fall: a scotch blend, pineapple, matcha and soda water. Winter: whisky, nigori sake, barley honey and sassafras. The beverage menu also features sake (both cold and hot), wines by the glass, and bottled and local craft beer. Currently, the restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 4 to 11 p.m. Later this fall, the venue will also open for lunch daily at 11 a.m. OBON Sushi + Bar + Ramen, 15059 N.
