MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS Morgan Francis empowers women to love themselves and their bodies

As a licensed professional counselor, doctor of clinical psychology and owner of Scottsdale Premier Counseling, Morgan Francis is dedicated to helping women improve their mental health and body image. It’s a passion that stems from her own journey of mental health and body awareness.

Francis, like many women, struggled with body distortion in the past. “I have picked apart, judged, compared and neglected my body,” she says. “I would go on diets only to end up bingeing on all the food I deprived myself of by the end of the week. Then I would feel ashamed that I couldn’t follow a diet program or get

Pulse UP CLOSE the results I thought I should be getting with my body.” After seeing a licensed therapist, Francis was able to become a better model of healthy body image, not just for herself, but for her daughter. “I learned to appreciate what my body does for me rather than focus on how it looks. I give thanks and praise to my body. I don’t own a scale – I don’t even have a fulllength mirror!” This mindset is in part thanks to Francis’ work in clinical psychology. For 10 years, Francis worked at Scottsdale-based Psychological Counseling Services, where she became specialized in the treatment of body image. During her overall 20 years in the mental health field, Francis has broadened her focus to also encompass eating disorders, self-empowerment, relationships, trauma and infidelity. After the birth of her third child in 2017, Francis, who received her master’s degree in community counseling from John Carroll University and her doctorate in clinical psychology from the Arizona School of Professional Psychology, founded her own private practice, Scottsdale Premier Counseling, and has flourished ever since. “I’ve since created multiple platforms where I am able to serve others outside of my therapy office,” Francis says. A frequent podcast guest, Francis also utilizes her experience in the mental health field in community workshops and as a regular relationship and sexual health commentator on FOX 10 Phoenix’s morning show and 12 News.

Prioritizing Mental Health In all of her endeavors, Francis’ mission is to end the stigma behind mental health. “There needs to be more conversation out in the open because everyone is going through something,” she says. Francis also stresses the importance of seeking out help in one’s mental health journey. “To think you should know how to fix your anxiety or depression yourself is nonsense,” she says. “I am not a dentist. I wouldn’t say to myself, ‘I can just figure out what to do with this cavity on my own.’ I would see my dentist as soon as possible. We all have doctors – cardiologists, gynecologists, orthodontists – and a psychologist is no different. It’s a doctor for your brain.” In June, Francis launched her first online course, “Bye Bye Body Blame: You Deserve to Love Your Body Without Having to Lose Weight.” The at-home course employs practical and supportive guidance to help people cope with the current diet culture, break down negative thoughts, and start respecting their bodies. “This is the course that I wish I had when I was struggling with my body image,” Francis says. “I define body image as our attitudes, beliefs, feelings and behaviors toward the way we think we look. Many people believe that once they lose weight, they can finally start to love themselves, yet that is the furthest thing from the truth. Body image starts from inside out, not the outside in.” As someone who feels honored to contribute to the destigmatization of mental health, Francis understands that health starts at home. “Talking about our thoughts and feelings is pretty normal in our household,” she says. “There is no shame in our mental

health game.” In 2016, she was nominated for MASK’s Moms Making a Difference Unity Award, which led to an elected position on their Women of Influence board. As a working mother, Francis enjoys relaxing with her family on the weekends and values the fact that she gets to be a positive role model for her three children. “The best part of my day is when I come home from work and they run to hug me,” she says. As a wife, mom, business owner and doctor, Francis shares that asking for help is vital to staying on top of it all. “I think that many women struggle with thinking that they don’t want to burden others by asking for help, but we cannot do the hard things on our own,” Francis says. “There are many days where I feel overwhelmed, stressed and rushed, but I know I have babysitters, friends and my amazing husband to help me with pickup or getting dinner ready. Asking for help has been one of the greatest gifts I have given myself.”

Celebrating 8 Years in Scottsdale Rodney Gentry, Top Hair Color Expert

Rodney Gentry is not only a color connoisseur, but also an expert with fine hair. His charm and zeal, in part, are why his clients adore him and refuse to settle for anyone else. Simply put, many of them do not trust anyone but Rodney with their hair. Keeping an open mind is how Rodney maintains his long list of loyal clients. “I keep communication open between a client and myself. I listen to people and what they have to say; their concerns or struggles with their hair. I think listening has turned into a lost art, but it’s something I do naturally,” he says. Based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, Rodney says he is happier than ever, having experienced many successes in Scottsdale over the past eight years. After a biking accident, Rodney moved to the Valley from Chicago, where he had owned and operated a studio. “I wanted a better, dryer climate. The humidity and cold of Chicago no longer held appeal for me.” Here, he opened a very successful studio, but running it took time away

from his true passion: coloring and styling. “I found myself reevaluating life and what was most important to me. I got back to my roots and back to what I love to do.” Rodney’s true joy and expertise is color. He specializes in creating a natural look that highlights the features of a client’s face and their complexion. By considering the history and condition of the hair, he provides each and every client with a unique experience catered to the individual. Rodney focuses on the needs of their hair, nurturing it back to full health, and providing a style that can be easily cared for at home. Rodney stays on the cutting edge of new and current trends. He is extremely knowledgeable with styling products, and almost exclusively uses Goldwell styling and color products. Enzymebased rather than peroxide-based, Goldwell color products nurture the hair at the same time as giving it a remarkably vibrant color. Along with color, Rodney performs wonders for fine hair to add volume and texture. His clients are amazed at

Hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at Sachi Studios, 10201 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85258. For an appointment, please call 480.639.2000, or visit www.rodneygentry.com for more information.

how different their hair looks after a color treatment. When talking with a client, he can recommend highlights or lowlights to achieve the desired texture and volume. Simple drying techniques can also make a big difference for those with fine hair. Part of why clients rave about Rodney is that he shows them how to achieve the same styled looks outside of the salon. “It’s important to live authentically and to do what you love. I’m happy where I’m at because I’m able to meet really great people and provide personalized care for each,” Rodney says.

CREATIVEPRENEUER Jill Granger built a business around her passion for purposeful design

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE

Turning your side hustle into a full-time job can be challenging, but Jill Granger knows firsthand the reward that lies on the other side: pursuing your passion. Granger’s calling to the creative industry started at a very young age. At just five years old, her drawing of a woman holding a balloon (aptly titled “Balloon Lady”) was published in Sesame Street Magazine. As an adult, she began working on the account management side for advertising firms and various corporations while doing freelance design projects on the side as an artistic outlet. Today, she runs Page + Parcel (www.pageandparcel.com), a creative studio that crafts beautiful projects for fellow creatives, entrepreneurs and small businesses. After the birth of her first daughter, Granger joined forces with an event planning firm to design custom wedding stationary and fell in love with the process. “Shortly after that, I made the switch to focus on not only corporate branding but event stationary, too,” she says. Although life is never calm and balanced with four kids, Granger loves making time to bring her clients’ ideas and vision to life and curate an exceptional first impression. “Whether it’s a logo in an email signature or the styling of a wedding invitation, people will judge something within a few seconds based on visual appeal alone,” Granger says. “High-quality graphic design builds excitement and credibility – and that’s priceless.” At the heart of what Granger does is the joy of the creative process. The self-described “creativepreneuer” strives to understand the personality of her clients’ businesses or events and create a visual story that instantaneously communicates that message. “I design my products with tremendous love, understanding that they will become a permanent part of my clients’ most treasured memories,” Granger shares. Growing her business by word-of-mouth referrals and valued partnerships is rewarding, but expanding Page + Parcel and her family simultaneously is Granger’s biggest accomplishment to date. “I can’t say the balance is easy or that I actually achieve the desired work-life balance every day, but I’m lucky to wake up each day and do what I love.”

BREAKING BREAD

Sandwich entrepreneur Rick Ueable helps children locally and abroad

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

In 1989, Rick Ueable was approached by his business partner Ken Clark with an outrageous idea. “He suggested we invest in sandwiches,” says Ueable, noting Clark wanted them to look into a thennew franchise opportunity called Subway. Though neither had restaurant experience, once he researched it, Ueable decided to get in on the ground floor of the burgeoning brand. “However, we named our company Foods 2000, thinking we would move on by 1999,” Ueable says. But 30 years later, Ueable – who, with Clark, owns 49 Arizona Subways – is still not only in the sandwich business, he’s also helping direct Subway into the future. Since 2000, he’s served on Subway’s Independent Purchasing Cooperative, helping drive innovation, improve profitability, and ensure quality control. He’s also a founding member of Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona (SKS), a nonprofit started by local franchisees to help at-risk children gain access to sports, equipment, registration fees and more. “To date, we’ve donated $1 million in grants and sports equipment for kids,” Ueable says. “And to celebrate our 20th anniversary this fall, we are hosting our biggest annual fundraiser ever in partnership with longtime supporters West Liberty Foods, Coca-Cola, Mobivity, Frito-Lay and Shamrock.” On Oct. 16, SKS will take over Topgolf Scottsdale for a friendly competition and charity auction. The next day, SKS will host a golf tournament and anniversary celebration at Talking Stick Golf Club. “I just hope I can attend this year,” laughs Ueable, who despite being a linchpin in its annual success, is often in Africa when it takes place because he also volunteers as director of African affairs for Partners in Action, which builds and supports orphanages, schools, clinics and skills centers worldwide. “Right now, I’m focused on Bulembu, a city in Swaziland,” says Ueable, explaining the nonprofit, in partnership with two Swazi partners, bought Bulembu with a goal to make it self-sustainable. So far, Partners in Action has helped open an orphanage, a school, a bakery, a dairy operation, a sawmill, and a hotel to help children and create jobs. “Each day, we’re inching closer to them achieving true independence,” says Ueable, a recent Phoenix Business Journal “Most Admired Leader” honoree for his good works.

GOVERNING & GARMENTS Mark Paratore shares his comfortable yet fashion-forward sensabilities

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Mark Paratore spends most of his days working in economic development for the City of Scottsdale and helping attract new technology companies to the community. Although a career in government may not sound that fashionable, Paratore manages to bring a clean, simple and confident look to the workplace. “I am someone who likes to keep with the trends and also take a few risks along the way in order to feel comfortable,” he says. Paratore does this by favoring brands like Rag & Bone, Wings + Horns, All Saints, and Topman for their fit, quality, and ease in dressing up or down. The pair of Ferragamo drivers in his closet is a constant reminder of “you get what you pay for,” and he considers them a tremendous investment in his wardrobe. Although Paratore avoids loud patterns, he isn’t afraid to pair a suit with statement sneakers. “You are seeing more guys pushing the business casual envelope, which I think is exciting.” Scottsdale is the perfect place for his livable aesthetic. “I love living in Arizona because I think it embodies being casual and comfortable. In the professional world, I believe there is a time and place for dressing up, but there is no playbook I follow.”

What is your must-have item when it comes to fashion? A white dress shirt because it can be worn for dressing up or for business casual and paired with a nice blazer and loafers. What would someone say if they looked in your closet? That everything serves a purpose. My closet is clean, organized and very much in line with my style. Give us some style advice. Keep it timeless yet relevant.

Smith’s swimwear collection includes more than 50 suits in various colors and styles, and she also has plenty of beach staples to match as well as athletic wear. “My style is very girly, yet also athletic and simple,” Smith says, noting that her go-to athleisure brand is Lululemon for its comfortable yet stylish aesthetic. “I also love wearing dresses, jewelry and makeup.” Inspired by singer Ariana Grande’s style – Smith loves how she rocks heels with oversized T-shirts – the former pageant contestant puts together looks that are both cute and comfortable and incorporate trends like color-blocking. “My all-time favorite color is pink, and I love anything glam,” she says. “I also go for the typical ‘all black’ ensemble at nighttime.” Being surrounded with people that dress to impress, Smith is privy to current trends and she frequents local boutique Alixandra Blue for the latest additions to her wardrobe.

What is your must-have item when it comes to fashion? Earrings! As a former pageant girl, I still love to wear a great pair of statement earrings with every outfit. What is your most prized possession in your closet? My Christian Louboutins because they are stylish, go with every outfit, and most of all, are comfortable. Tell us your No. 1 style tip. Look good, feel good!

LOCAL GOLFER NATE LASHLEY BEATS SEEMINGLY INSURMOUNTABLE ODDS TO EARN PGA TOUR WIN FOR THE AGES

38

So Scottsdale! September ‘19

In June 2019, PGA Tour golfer and Scottsdale resident Nate Lashley won the Rocket Mortgage Classic by six strokes. If unfamiliar with or just a passing fan of the sport, this may sound like just another story of a local golfer taking home a PGA Tour win. However, it most certainly is not for several reasons.

Lashley was born and raised in Mitchell, Nebraska, which is just outside of Scottsbluff. “It was a truly small town with maybe a population of 2,000,” Lashley says. Growing up in Mitchell, Lashley dreamed of going pro … in basketball. “Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Nate Lashley. Hey, dream big,” Lashley says. But, at age 8 when he picked up his first club, everyone around him saw his potential in a very different sport – golf.

40

So Scottsdale! September ‘19

“While I don’t technically remember picking up a club that young, my relatives always tell me my swing was effortless and natural,” says Lashley, who continued playing both sports throughout his youth, earning all-state honors for basketball while in high school. In golf, however, he did even better. Lashley was named the Nebraska Junior Amateur Golfer of the Year in both 2000 and 2001. Eventually, he came to understand that he had a better shot at going pro on the course rather than on the court.

“So, I moved to Tucson in 2001 to attend The University of Arizona as well as play on their collegiate golf team,” Lashley says. In his freshman year alone, Lashley competed in three junior varsity events and eight varsity events. He continued to advance in the sport throughout his college career. During his junior year, in fact, Lashley proved his value to the team on May 23, 2004 when he birdied his last hole during the NCAA West Regional to help the team advance to NCAA Nationals. “But the days after that win were the worst of my life,” Lashley says. On May 24, 2004 he got a call that his parents and girlfriend – all traveling home to Nebraska after watching him compete in his tournament – were involved in a plane crash, all of them losing their lives. Shock, horror and sorrow do not even begin to describe what Lashley went through – and still does – in the months following the accident.

TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH Golf, at first, became a means to escape his unimaginable pain. By his senior year, Lashley ranked among the Wildcats’ top players and earned All-American honors. “I actually left school before formally graduating to begin the process of becoming a professional golfer,” Lashley says, explaining that golf isn’t like most professional sports where one is drafted into a league or association as soon as eligible. “Back in the mid-2000s, the only way to reach the PGA tour was through what is called ‘Q School.’” According to Lashley, in the mid-2000s (rules and processes have changed in recent years), Q School – what the golf community called the collective PGA Qualifying Stages – included three sequential stages (now four), each with several dozen rounds of golf. “When I was in Q School, rounds one and two included fourround tournaments, so 48 holes of golf each,” Lashley says. “The final stage was a six-round tournament, meaning 72 total holes of golf.” The final stage is limited to only 144 participants from across the country. The top 25 earn what is called their PGA Tour Card, and the next 50 earn what was then called the Web.com Tour Card. The Web.com Tour – now called the Korn Ferry Tour – is the developmental tour for the U.S.-based PGA tour. “I know – not as simple as being drafted like in the NBA or NFL, right?” Lashley says. “And there’s more.” Once on the now-Korn Ferry Tour, players like Lashley are able to earn their PGA Tour Card through three tournament wins, accumulated earnings, or through the Tour Finals, which is the culminating tournament. Lashley earned his Web.com Card in 2005 via this grueling process. Ironically enough, his first professional tournament took place in his native Nebraska. “I didn’t win, but did move back to Nebraska at that time before missing Arizona and making Scottsdale my permanent home in 2006,” says Lashley, who would play in dozens of tournaments over the next 10 years to work his way closer to the PGA Tour Card.

In 2015, Lashley’s career took a life-changing turn when he qualified for the PGA Tour Latinoamérica. That year, he finished eighth on the tour’s money list and earned five top 10 finishes. He found even more success in 2016, winning three events and leading the tour’s money list, which led to him being named Player of the Year. “My next career-defining moment would come soon after in 2017,” Lashley says, referring to the tour’s Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, a tournament he played in May 2017 in the Dominican Republic. He won this tournament by one stroke. That, combined with his other top 10 placements and cuts made that year, earned him his first PGA Tour Card to play the 2017-2018 season. Ready to work the hardest he ever had, Lashley gave it his all, but missed the cut in his first four tournaments. His play improved later in the season until he tore his meniscus, which required surgery and ended his season as a result.

THE COMEBACK KID Since then, Lashley has come back strong. He played in his first PGA tournament since the surgery – the Safeway Open in Napa, California, in fall 2018 – and tied for 17th place. Showing the world his grit, resolve and mental fortitude, Lashley earned his first top 10 placement in February 2019 at the Puerto Rico Open, where he placed eighth. And then, it happened. “I was the third alternate for the Rocket Mortgage Classic in June, meaning I needed three players to withdraw in order to play in the tournament,” Lashley says. “Believe it or not, three players did withdraw, making me the final player to make it into the tournament, effectively as the bottom seed.” Lashley went on to play the golf of his life and shocked the world by leading the tournament from the onset and winning it by six strokes over the likes of PGA superstars Dustin Johnson, Brandt Snedeker, Patrick Reed, and Hideki Matsuyama as well as 2018 and 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open winners Gary Woodland and Rickie Fowler. The days since have been a bit of a blur for Lashley, especially in July. “My Rocket Mortgage Classic win earned me the opportunity to play at The Open Championship in Ireland, one of the four ‘majors’ in the sport,” Lashley says. The win also means Lashley will play on golf’s biggest stage during the 2020 Masters Tournament, which will take place April 9 through 12 at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. He is also signed on to play at the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open, set for Jan. 27 through Feb. 2 at TPC Scottsdale. A true example of triumph over tragedy several times over, Lashley is doing his best to savor this special time in his career while reaching higher and staying content with his life here in the Valley, which includes watching sports with friends at Goldie’s Sports Cafe, boating at Saguaro Lake, enjoying steak at Mastro’s Ocean Club or Dominick’s Steakhouse, and sipping on Papago Orange Blossom from Huss Brewing Co. or Four Peaks Kilt Lifter. “I also love golfing for fun, especially at Whisper Rock Golf Club right here in Scottsdale,” Lashley says.

This month, The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will honor Arizona’s best and brightest broadcast talents during the 42nd annual Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards, taking place Sept. 14 at Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia. To celebrate, we are sharing the stories of five of the Valley’s award-winning anchors, who work tirelessly to shine a light where it needs to be shined, be a voice for those who cannot always speak up for themselves, and showcase the critical issues facing our community on a daily basis.

OLIVIA FIERRO AZ FAMILY AZ Family anchor Olivia Fierro, a member of the station’s multi-year Rocky Mountain Emmy Award-winning Good Morning Arizona team, is a bookworm. “I grew up with my nose firmly planted in a book,” says Fierro, who counts Island of the Blue Dolphins and Little Women among her favorite childhood novels growing up in California. Undeclared when she enrolled at UCLA in 1992, Fierro studied history and women’s studies, partially due to their extensive reading requirements, while taking on internships from public relations to music to fashion. “My final internship was at Good Day L.A., and it all clicked,” Fierro says. “I wanted to read and share the news.” Fierro graduated in 1997 and earned a full-time position in the newsroom at Good Day L.A. Her initial on-camera work was focused on red carpet interviews, but she soon found herself wanting to share more meaningful stories. “So, I left the massive LA market in 2001 for Amarillo, Texas, where I could work as a reporter,” Fierro says. She eventually found her way to AZ Family in 2003, where she first worked as a Northern Arizona reporter. “I primarily worked out of a room at Hotel Monte Vista in Flagstaff,” Fierro says. “But it paid off, as I was asked to come down the mountain to co-anchor Good Morning Arizona in 2004.” And though she left Arizona for an evening anchor role in Las Vegas in 2009, she found her way back to her family – her AZ Family – in 2015. “I am making my time here count, and for more than just reading the news,” Fierro says. “This time, I am sharing my love of actual reading with viewers.” In January 2019, she launched Olivia’s Book Club on AZ Family in partnership with Changing Hands Bookstore. Through it, she reads and discusses books on air, encouraging viewers to read along, connect online, and embrace their inner bookworms. 2019 nomination: Best newscast for Good Morning Arizona.

MARK CURTIS 12 NEWS Many people know 14-time Rocky Mountain Emmy recipient Mark Curtis – and his famous mustache – as the longtime sportscaster-turned-anchor of nearly all of 12 News’ evening broadcasts. But not many know his original claim to fame. “Recall Remember the Titans, the Denzel Washington movie circa 2000,” Curtis says. “It’s based on T.C. Williams High School in Virginia, which was integrated in 1971.” In the film, Washington plays the head football coach, Herman Boone, who is tasked with bringing the integrated team – and the community – together. “That was my high school,” says Curtis, who attended T.C. Williams from 1971 to 1974. “Coach Boone was actually my driver’s ed teacher!” While at his alma mater, however, Curtis never dreamed of a career in journalism. “After graduating, I enrolled at the University of Georgia to study medicine with the goal of being an OB-GYN,” Curtis says. “However, I didn’t ‘cut the mustard’ academically.” Curtis switched majors (to psychology) and colleges (to American University) in 1977, graduating in 1978. “It wasn’t until after graduation when I was working as a bartender and our DJ called in sick that I ever even considered public speaking of any kind,” Curtis says, filling in for said DJ and loving it. “I got the bug and went back to school to earn my journalism degree soon after.” After that, things moved fast as Curtis did an internship at a local TV station, which evolved into a full-time position producing a Washington Redskins’ show in the late ’70s. “From there, I first joined 12 News from 1980 to 1987 before heading to the Midwest to hone my craft. I came back in 1995 and have called 12 News home ever since,” says Curtis, who transitioned from the sports desk to anchor duties in 2004, mustache intact. 2019 nominations (nine total): Evening newscast (three nominations), breaking news, continuing coverage, politics/government, societal concerns, special events coverage, and writer.

DANIELLE LERNER ABC 15 Ever heard the term “local boy done good?” In ABC 15’s Danielle Lerner’s case, it’s more like local girl done great. Lerner moved to Scottsdale at age 12 and considers it home. After graduating from Chaparral High School in 2002, she attended Saint Mary’s College in Indiana, studying communications and English with the intent of entering law school. “My mom suggested I try an internship with a local news station to hone my writing skills, and it ended up changing the entire course of my life,” Lerner says. She then set her sights on broadcast journalism with the goal of one day reporting news in Phoenix. After getting her master’s degree from Northwestern University, her journey back home started in San Luis Obispo, where she earned her first reporting job in 2008. “When a morning anchor position opened at News 4 in Tucson, I jumped at the chance to get back to Arizona,” says Lerner, who had the opportunity to cover congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ remarkable recovery after the 2011 Tucson shooting. And then, in 2014, Lerner’s dream came true when a position opened at ABC 15. She earned the job and has since served in various roles, most recently anchoring the weekend evening news and reporting for different newscasts. The station has received multiple Rocky Mountain Emmys for overall excellence in the past five years, and Lerner herself has won a Rocky Mountain Emmy and been nominated in several categories, including best anchor. Today, Lerner juggles her reporting duties with a new role as a board member of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter, the governing body of the Rocky Mountain Emmys – and an even bigger job. “My husband and I have a 2-yearold, Addison, and 4-month-old, Harper, at home,” Lerner says. “Send coffee!” 2019 nomination: Talent anchor news.

LEÓN FELIPE GONZÁLEZ UNIVISION ARIZONA León Felipe González, a 2018 Rocky Mountain Emmy recipient for his coverage of the closing of the Tent City jail, was born and raised in vibrant Mexico City. “Growing up, I always knew I wanted to somehow share Mexico’s culture and traditions, as well as showcase present-day Latin culture to the world,” says González, noting the news industry was a natural fit. After graduating with his bachelor’s degree in communication sciences from Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana in 1995, he earned a reporting position at Televisión Azteca in 1996 before moving on to Televisa, Mexico’s largest broadcast network, soon after. “Televisa holds a special place in my heart because I met my wife, Belén, there,” González says. His work eventually got noticed by Univision’s Primer Impacto, an international news program, which offered him a position as a Mexico City news correspondent in 2002. “Over the next 10 years, I covered everything from presidential elections and papal visits to drug trafficking and natural disasters,” González says. Soon, he found himself missing his family and sought a way to spend more time at home. His solution: a new home and a new country. “In 2012, I picked up my family and moved to San Francisco for an anchor position with the Univision affiliate there,” says González, noting at the time he only had basic English skills. Thankfully, the language came easily enough to him and the move was a hit, though the bustling position eventually began to take him away from his family yet again. “In 2017, an amazing job came along – an anchor position hosting evening newscasts at Univision Arizona,” González says. “It gives me ample time to be with my family, but it allows me to continue showcasing the culture and people I love to the world.” 2019 nominations (six total): Talent anchor news, journalistic enterprise, writer, investigative report, arts and entertainment, and societal concerns.

KRIS PICKEL CBS 5 For Kris Pickel, a recipient of the 2018 Rocky Mountain Emmy for investigative reporting and a CBS 5 evening news anchor, journalism has long been a passion. “When it comes to news, I’m a massive journalism nerd and proud of it,” says Pickel, noting her nearly 30-year TV news career and resulting geekdom almost never was. Pickel, who grew up in Sacramento, California, attended University of California, Davis where she studied rhetoric and organizational communication. While there, she took an internship with local TV station KCRA News 3, a requirement for her major that began her love affair with news. Upon graduation in 1991, she had two job offers. “One was – if you can believe it – a job selling wine in San Francisco, with a company car and everything,” Pickel says. “The other was an editor position at KCRA News 3, with half the salary but the ability to be part of the actual news.” And though her parents thought she was crazy, she took the editor position. “Since the early 1990s, I have worked as a reporter, producer, anchor and everything in between,” says PickeI, who worked in Grand Junction, Colorado; Reno, Nevada; Tucson, Arizona; Sacramento, California; and Cleveland before joining CBS 5 in 2015. Notably, she was the first female reporter on the West Coast to enter a boot camp program for jail inmates, going undercover and broadcasting her findings. “In addition, I led a news investigation in Arizona following riots and injuries that accompanied The University of Arizona’s basketball team’s 2001 NCAA Championship loss to Duke University, which helped lead to procedural changes for police crowd control,” Pickel says. When not working, expect Pickel to be scouring news sites (of course), hosting events with Phoenix Children’s Hospital, volunteering with a wide range of other charities, and spending time with her family – husband Carl Lemon, an award-winning photographer, and sons Clark and Bruce. 2019 nominations (two total): Feature news report and societal concerns.

A Transformation Story Real results from a real patient of The Hormone Zone

Board-certified naturopathic doctors Cristina Romero-Bosch and John A. Robinson share a simple vision — to help patients become and maintain the healthiest version of themselves. They achieve this daily at their Scottsdale-based practice The Hormone Zone, where they approach healthcare holistically. By offering an array of unique medical services, like hormone replacement therapy and IV nutrition, Bosch and Robinson go beyond what conventional medicine does and focus on health optimization. Jo M. can attest to making a 180-degree in her health, courtesy of Dr. Bosch’s professional help and unwavering support. HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE HORMONE ZONE? I was researching countless naturopaths in the area before I stumbled upon Dr. Bosch. I spoke

with her via email for months before deciding that her approach would be the best fit for me. HOW WERE YOU FEELING PRIOR TO ARRIVING TO THE HORMONE ZONE? I was extremely sluggish, lethargic and had no energy. I didn’t feel like myself anymore. WHAT DID YOU TRY IN THE PAST TO REMEDY HOW YOU WERE FEELING? I took the more conventional route. I saw conventional doctors and their treatment approach was heavily reliant on prescription drugs and labs. I felt like they weren’t looking at me as a person. WHAT HEALTH GOALS HAS DR. BOSCH HELPED YOU ACCOMPLISH AND HOW? Dr. Bosch has helped me

immensely with all my health goals. She’s helped me with weight loss, diabetic control, regulating my high cholesterol and high blood pressure. She also helped me wean off some of my medications and introduced me to the world of natural supplements. I was so reluctant to change, but Dr. Bosch took so much time with me to explain everything. I never felt rushed or like my health was out of my control. I am so grateful for Dr. Bosch. WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT DR. BOSCH AND THE HORMONE ZONE? Dr. Bosch really cares about you as a person. She listens and explains everything clearly and in a way that anyone can understand. Being a diabetic, I require a lot. Dr. Bosch always takes the time

to educate me and help me reach my goals. I always know why certain treatments are suggested and the pros and cons of everything she recommends. I would recommend Dr. Bosch and The Hormone Zone to everyone! Learn more about Jo’s healthful journey at www.hormone-zone. com/blog. THE NATURAL FAT SOLUTION

PRE OP - FAT TRANSFER TO UPPER 2/3RDS OF FACE WITH LIFT TO LOWER 1/3 OF FACE

POST OP - FAT TRANSFER TO UPPER 2/3RDS OF FACE WITH LIFT TO LOWER 1/3 OF FACE

Have you ever looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize the image staring back at you? Sunken eyes, cheeks, temples and lips tell you you’re melting away. How is it possible that the extra fat of your thighs, hips and abdomen will NOT melt away with diet and exercise, but your facial fullness and softness too readily deflates into nothingness. There’s a solution to this dilemma…the Natural Fat Solution. Why not use your hated body and thigh fat to correct the deflation of facial aging? Over the last 25 years, Doctor Andrew Wolin has been using fat harvested from each patient’s lower extremity and torso to rejuvenate, restore and reclaim their youthful facial form. A pioneer in the field of auto fat transfers, he has performed thousands of rejuvenating procedures on many patients who were reluctant to undergo more invasive surgery and were candidates for re-volumization rather than classic face lifting. Although Dr Wolin does incorporate fat grafting in many of his facelift patients, he has found that in many cases, fat alone will be an amazingly rewarding procedure and provide his patients with a phenomenal, natural and permanent tool against the deflation of aging. Another benefit is the definite improvement in the health and quality of the re-inflated skin. It appears that the simultaneous transfer of Adult Stem Cells with the Fat Cell Transfer contributes to the amazing results…. a result that is greater than the sum of all the parts. Call today and see if you’re a candidate for the Natural Fat Solution.

Dr. Andrew Wolin has been a leader in the plastic surgical community of Scottsdale since 1985, and his extensive years of experience benefit each patient. His top-notch reputation as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and for cutting-edge procedures draws patients from near and far. Girls on the Run’s Limitless Potential Brunch helps empower the next generation of female leaders

Now entering its second year, the Limitless Potential Brunch supports Girls on the Run’s vision of a world where every girl has a powerful voice. The nonprofit inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that integrates running – all while celebrating what makes each girl one of a kind. The Limitless Potential Brunch will take place at Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia, featuring a delicious brunch, a silent auction, an Athleta trunk show, gift bags, and an empowering message that will bring to life the impact of the Girls on the Run organization. “The Limitless Potential Brunch is a fantastic opportunity to spend time with amazing women who want to make a difference in our local community,” says Sharon McLaughlin, a Girls on the Run advisory committee member. “It’s inspiring to hear about the impact on young participants, which makes the event so meaningful.” A highlight of the morning will be keynote speaker Sarah Moshman’s message on the power of using your voice to inspire and create change, a topic the Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker and TEDx speaker is extremely passionate about. After directing two short documentaries about powerful young women, Moshman has since created two feature-length documentaries. Up next, she’s making a documentary examining sexual harassment in the workplace. Moshman is dedicated to telling stories that uplift, inform and inspire as well as showcasing strong role models on screen and in life, which aligns perfectly with the mission of Girls on the Run. The Limitless Potential Brunch offers an opportunity to better understand how this life-changing program is impacting Maricopa and Pinal counties. The fifth annual Desert Sky Gala raises funds for Arizona families and children

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

In 2013, Pat Lamb and Bill Rogers founded Care Fund, previously the Apollo Foundation, which helps families with a critically ill child pay their mortgage or rent when medical expenses limit their ability to do so. In 2010, Lamb and his family saw fellow local families struggling with their mortgages and other bills firsthand when their infant son, Apollo, came down with a virus at three days old. Apollo passed away at just nine weeks old. “Our goals are to ensure that families without the means that the Lambs were blessed to have at the time can remain in their homes and spend time together despite their circumstances,” says Robert Raygoza, Care Fund’s director of development and marketing. “We do this by working with hospital social workers, physicians,

60

health care professionals, hospitals, and clinics to refer families to our Mortgage and Rent Assistance Program.” “Since its inception, Care Fund has provided more than $1.6 million in emergency mortgage and rent assistance to Arizona families,” Raygoza says. Care Fund’s primary means of raising funds is through its signature event, Desert Sky Gala, which is presented by Washington Federal Bank. “Today, we host a full gala, albeit with some of our own unique twists,” says Raygoza, noting the event seeks to raise $300,000, up from just over $200,000 netted in 2018. “First, there is the theme.” Elevated Western would be the best way to describe this year’s theme. For attire, think a combination of black-tie and

boots, sleek suits with bolo ties, or cocktail dresses with cowgirl hats. The evening will feature a cocktail hour, a silent auction and dinner, which will include entertainment by local country band Georgia Chrome and singer-songwriter Trent Handcock. There will also be a live auction followed by dessert and dancing. Teresa Strasser, best known as the former co-host of The Adam Carolla Show, Win Ben Stein’s Money, and TLC’s While You Were Out, will serve as emcee. “The event will be capped off by a local family who has gone through our program to share their story,” Raygoza says. To date, Care Fund has helped 632 families, including 1,645 children. Should the event meet its goal, it will be able to assist another 130 families.

STROLL & SIP Explore Scottsdale’s walkable wine trail

Arizona’s wine industry is growing by leaps and bounds, but given the grapes are primarily grown in the southern and northern areas of the state, it can be hard to “sip local.” That’s where Old Town Scottsdale’s wine trail comes into play, featuring several tasting rooms just a short walk from one another.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Merkin Vineyards Old Town Merkin serves wines from Merkin Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars, both founded by Maynard James Keenan, who is also known for his music career as the front man for Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. Both brands make high-elevation wines in the tradition of Spain and Italy. The tasting room offers wine by the glass and bottle as well as Arizona craft beers and nonalcoholic options, plus an impressive food menu. There is also a storefront that features both brands, Keenan’s Puscifer label, and select bottles from sister Arizona wineries for purchase. www.merkinoldtownscottsdale.com. LDV Winery Along the Scottsdale Waterfront in the former Herb Box space, and in walking distance from Merkin, the LDV Winery tasting room brings a piece of LDV’s vineyard – located near the Chiricahua Mountains in southeastern Arizona – to the heart of Old Town. LDV Winery specializes in wines produced from Rhone-varietal grapes including viognier, grenache, syrah, and petite sirah. The tasting room offers several flight options as well as wines by the glass, bottle and for purchase. There are also snacks and cheese plates for purchase as well as regular events. www.ldvwinery.com. Carlson Creek Located near Merkin and LDV, this hot spot is one of three tasting rooms from the family-owned boutique winery Carlson Creek Vineyard. The 2,300-square-foot space, which was previously an art gallery and still shows the works of artists each month, offers guests the opportunity to taste more than a dozen of its varietals ranging from chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and muscat to sangiovese, mourvedre and grenache rosé. For pairing, cheese boards are also available with an assortment of artisan cheeses, meats, marinated olives, nuts and dried fruits. www.carlsoncreek.com. Aridus Wine Company Aridus Wine Company, which is headquartered in Willcox, made headlines last year when it was named among the top hot brands by Wine Business Monthly. Its growing location – in the Chiricahua Hills appellation – was of particular interest to the judging panel as well as its proactive work toward becoming an entirely estate-sourced operation. The modern tasting room currently offers tasting flights that focus on wines made using a blend of the best of Old World and New World styles as well as snacks and charcuterie boxes. www.ariduswineco.com. Salvatore Vineyards Scottsdale This tasting room and brand is owned by the Domanico family, whose roots are in Sicily and mainland Italy. The family, who also own the Passion Cellars label, grows its grapes in Willcox, and the vineyard is known for its crisp, fruit-forward white wines and complex red wines. At the tasting room, guests can mix and match flights with both Passion Cellars and Salvatore options (generally the reserve wines are under the Salvatore brand) and pair them with cheese plates. www.passioncellars.com.

SO SPICY Dishes that dial up the heat

Outside, the temperatures might start to cool down ever so slightly, but the heat is always on at these Scottsdale restaurants, which delight in creative ways of using various chile peppers to up the spice quotient in their dishes.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

The Mission Given The Mission’s entire menu is inspired by South American fare, it’s no surprise that peppers are used liberally by executive chef Zachery Riddell. His Peruvian clam stew, almejas al vapor ($14), for example, features the aji amarillo pepper along with rock shrimp, chorizo and roasted corn. Spanish for yellow chile pepper, this Peruvian chile has a good heat level, but won’t leave one’s mouth burning – it adds just the right amount of heat to enhance the chorizo’s spiciness and the shrimp’s freshness. www.themissionaz.com. Chula Seafood Chula’s executive chef and resident fish monger Juan Zamora is always seeking ways to elevate what he calls his “boat-to-plate” cuisine featuring never frozen, sustainable fish by the pound, poke, house-smoked fish, and daily specials. Among his favorite ways to innovate: the fruity, aromatic chile pepper. Everything from jalapenos to arbol to gochugaru flakes, which are made from sun-dried chile peppers, can be found on the menu. But, his favorite use of peppers is in a pairing with tuna. He uses smoky, grassy, spicy green chiles as the secret ingredient in his tuna melt ($14), a signature special every Wednesday. www.chulaseafood.com. Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers Anyone can throw a pepper or two on a burger and call it a day, but at Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers, the culinary team takes its spice factor far more seriously. For example, make the juicy lucy-fer burger ($14.50), the team stuffs jalapenos and pepper jack cheese into the patty before cooking. And for its ring of fire ($13.50), they not only smother the patty in jalapenos and pepper jack, but they top it with cayenne pepper-infused buffalo sauce and spicy mayo made with habanero powder and jalapeno juice. www.coldbeers.com. Tottie’s Asian Fusion With a menu that combines Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese cuisines, there are more than a dozen items featuring peppers. Among chef Tottie Kaya’s spiciest is her kang keo wan (price varies), which features green curry – the spiciest of the curry options – made with green Thai chilies known for their potent and lingering heat. A choice of protein, including chicken, beef, shrimp, fish or mussels, can be added to balance the spice and add an extra savory kick to the dish. www.tottiesasianfusion.com. Jalapeno Inferno Jalapeno Inferno has a full section of its regular menu titled “Some Like It Hot.” There, you’ll find enchiladas Nuevo Mexico ($15.99), which are smothered in red enchilada sauce and an inferno sauce, which chef Terry Craig makes daily using green chiles and homemade chicken stock. The Courtney’s burrito ($16.99) also features the sauce as well as chile rajas, which are slices of fresh chile peppers. Craig is so enamored with peppers, in fact, he also offers a seasonal hatch chile harvest menu each fall. www.jalapenoinferno.com.

FUN FLOWERS & PLAYFUL PETS Jules Gissler’s exuberant art and imaginative stories inspire joy

BY HEATHER LYNN HORVAT / PHOTOS BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

So Scottsdale! September ‘19

Jules Gissler has always been interested in art, describing her paintings as whimsical and herself as an “artologist.” After creating hand-painted pillows and a line of hardware jewelry called “ziG” – which she still sells – Gissler turned to painting, with dogs and flowers being her primary subjects. “They come from my imaginary world, and I give them all names,” says Gissler, who graduated from Montana State University with a degree in graphic design. “Even the flowers have names.” Gissler mostly uses acrylic paint for its quick dry time, often adding a splash of sequins, just because. She tends to mix mediums, such as colored pencils and charcoal or dip ink and watercolor. “I have always liked a mix of bright colors because they make you smile, whether you realize it or not,” Gissler says. Gissler does commissions – usually paint or mixed media – of animals, flowers, women, abstract subjects, and virtually anything a client might ask for. She also writes quirky stories to go along with the images she creates, then shares them on social media. “I love doing commissions for people and seeing their excitement when I deliver the artwork, especially since these are such personal paintings,” Gissler says. “The majority of my commissions are people’s pets, who are part of their family and their furry kid. With each painting, I feel like I genuinely get to know their dog.” Presently, those passing through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport can view Gissler’s painting titled Lenny was Curious Just How Long the Average Cat Nap Lasted, which was part of a juried show for Arizona Artists Guild. In addition, two of her paintings – Hope and Joy – are permanently displayed at the Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix. She donates much of her dog art to various rescue organizations and was the 2018 featured artist for Arizona Animal Welfare League. In addition to painting, Gissler wrote and illustrated a book titled Getting Your Magic Back. “Amongst all the yuck I was going through with my divorce, I needed something to be the sparkle,” she says. “There were all these daunting chapter books out there. I wanted something short and concise that people could relate to and know that they will get their magic back and that they aren’t alone.” The book holds meaning for anyone who is going through a life change or illness and anyone who simply wants to be inspired. “I just want to make people smile,” Gissler says. “I became an artist because I couldn’t stop drawing or doing anything creative. That is who I am. That is the thing that makes my heart happy.” On Oct. 5, Gissler will be one of 18 featured artists at Shemer Art Center’s annual Furry Friends Fine Arts Festival, which showcases animal-themed works of art and through which all funds raised will support the nonprofit art venue. 2019 MERCEDES-BENZ AMG G63 The reimagining of this iconic SUV is outrageously spectacular BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG G63

The iconic Mercedes-Benz AMG G63, or G-Wagen as it’s affectionately known, has been thoroughly redesigned for the first time since its introduction 40 years ago. With changes inside and out including state-of-the-art safety and technology upgrades, the design team in Graz, Austria – where the vehicle has always been built – has done a superb job of remaining true to the G-Wagen’s virtues while implementing a gorgeous reinterpretation of its unmistakable boxy design. Originally a purpose-built military vehicle commissioned for the Shah of Iran in 1975, the slab-sided, go-anywhere brute of a non-civilian utility vehicle quickly drew the admiration of wellheeled consumers from around the world, and a civilian version was offered starting in 1979. My AMG G63 was powered by a 4.0-liter V-8 biturbo engine delivering 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. This setup has the G63 sprinting from zero to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, with a top speed of 137 mph. That’s an amazing amount of power, with its glorious exhaust notes delivered via the dual-flow exhaust system with side pipes below the rear doors. A switch on the center console allows the

choice between three settings: Comfort, Sport and Sport+, thus influencing the driving experience from very comfortable to taut and sporty. At just over 2 inches longer and 5 inches wider, the new G-Wagen is slightly bigger all around and has a significantly larger interior when compared to the previous generation. On the interior, the elegant switchgear has optional upgrades including “designo” Nappa leather upholstery with diamond quilt stitching and a leather dashboard. The contoured seats are also available with eight massage configurations, including strengthening “active workout” programs and spa-like hot stone massages. Behind the wheel, the AMG G63 proves to be supremely comfortable and quiet, with superb handling that appears to defy the battle-ready capabilities it inherited from its military-equipped predecessors. All this luxury, however, comes at a steep price. But those with the means and the desire to introduce a little extravagance into their lives will be rewarded with far more fun and overall enjoyment than could be provided by any other SUV on the market.

At 6,300 square feet, this masterful home designed by architect Bing Hu is nestled against Camelback Mountain in the private golf community of Stone Canyon. With five bedrooms, 5 1/2 baths, and more than an acre of space, this innovative dwelling blurs the lines between art and architecture. The entrance gives way to a foyer, which is equipped with an elevator to the second floor, and an airy family room. The tall ceilings, fashionable light fixtures, and sleek gray tones of the statement fireplace and adjacent wet bar lend a striking modern feel to the entertainment space, which is only steps away from the outdoor living area thanks to 10-foot sliding glass doors. The gourmet kitchen continues the theme of contemporary detailing with gray and white cabinetry and marble countertops. With a temperature-controlled wine wall; a large island; and multiple sinks, gas ranges and dishwashers, it’s suited for both extravagant parties and daily life. The space is accented by four separate dining areas: a formal dining room, two breakfast bars, and a breakfast nook with floor-to-ceiling windows. The master bedroom boasts a marble fireplace, a sitting room, glossy wood flooring, and a walk-in closet. The luxurious en suite includes a lavish shower, a modern tub, and separate vanities. Each additional bedroom is also outfitted with an en suite bathroom. Other living spaces include a multi-purpose room, currently functioning as a home theater, and an office with outdoor access. Outside, the entertainment space includes a fireplace and a dining area with a built-in barbecue. The glass tile pool and spa has unique light and fire features, and at one end of the pool sits a serene 684-square-foot guest house, which currently doubles as a yoga studio. The front and backyard both display a balance between stunning natural desert foliage and vibrant, low-maintenance synthetic grass. An additional patio allows for even more gorgeous views and room for entertaining. The one-of-a-kind home also features garage space for five cars. 5237 E. Solano Drive, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253. SOOTHING SANCTUARY

Restorative waters and volcanic ash-infused mud baths await at an iconic Northern California retreat

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Indian Springs Resort is a healing haven more than 1 million years in the making. “All those years ago, Mount Konocti erupted 20 miles from what is now Napa’s Calistoga region,” says Chris Costas, general manager of Indian Springs Resort. “As a result, both naturally warm and mineral-rich springs called thermal geysers formed and volcanic ash was deposited on Indian Springs’ property.” Natural hot springs like these have long been heralded for improving circulation, promoting sleep, and relieving stress. “And while the idea of volcanic ash may sound odd, due to its level of sulfur, it has been shown to disinfect the blood, aid the oxidation reactions in the body, protect cells, and stimulate collagen production,” Costas says. “The Native American tribes who settled this land over 8,000 years ago took advantage of both for medicinal and meditative purposes. We aim to offer those same benefits to our guests.” The seeds for Indian Springs Resort as it is known today began with Sam Brannan, the founder of Calistoga, who built the first version of the resort in 1861. “The resort would continue on for another 100-plus years before being updated and renamed Indian Springs Resort, in homage to the area’s first

settlers, in 1988,” Costas says. “Then, in the past five years, we’ve been able to expand on the previously untouched areas of our 17-acre land.” Today, the sprawling property is an idyllic retreat, especially given it offers three 1,200-square-foot bungalows and two homes in addition to its resort rooms and suites. “Our guest homes are something special. The cozy 800-square-foot Hill House overlooks the entire property and has two bedrooms with their own decks, two bathrooms, and both family and dining rooms,” Costas says. “Our Merchant House is 1,600 square feet and features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a gourmet kitchen, family and dining rooms, an expansive deck, and a fire pit.” All guests are able to take advantage of the resort’s complimentary bicycles, bocce ball courts, shuffleboard, croquet, fireplace lounge, walking labyrinth, hammock-filled garden and – of course – the private hot springs during their stay. “Our main mineral pool is Olympic-sized and open until midnight so guests can float under the stars,” Costas says. “We also have an adults-only pool, which is smaller but offers all the same therapeutic properties.” Then, there is the spa, where mud is a main attraction. In fact, Indian Springs is one of the only locations worldwide able to mine and hand-sift its own ash. According to Costas, most spas that offer mud baths need to combine ash with peat as filler and import mineral water, but all of Indian Springs’ ingredients are naturally occurring on property. Guests can book mud baths or a mineral water soak. Both are time-honored traditions sure to leave visitors relaxed and rejuvenated. Other unique offerings include chardonnay bubble baths and goat milk baths. Anyone – whether a guest or not – can make a spa appointment and try a mud bath, but only resort guests can enjoy the healing waters of the two pools. COASTAL CREATIVITY Laguna Beach captivates with artistic flair and luxurious seaside retreats

BY DAVID DURAN / PHOTOS COURTESY OF VISIT LAGUNA BEACH

Located halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, Laguna Beach is one of Orange County’s prime retreats. With 7 miles of coves and beaches and plenty of sea caves, tide pools, oceanside bluffs, and sandy beaches to explore, Laguna Beach provides the setting for a unique and easily accessible beach getaway. Beyond its outdoor scenery, the coastal city has always had deep ties with the artistic community, as reflected in its galleries, public art pieces, and the array of art festivals that take place throughout the year. When walking through the historic downtown area, one is truly surrounded by art – if it’s not a musician or an artist on a corner trying to catch a break, it’s an impressive mural, sculpture or gallery window filled with colorful works of art.

Spot Picture-Perfect Murals Laguna Beach has more than 100 pieces of public art. They’re all worthy of a visit, but it’s the murals that really stand out. And some of the city’s most recent murals live in the Laguna Arts District’s new creative hub, The Hive, which houses tenants like Laguna Beach Beer Company and McClain Cellars’ tasting room. The Hive also provides space for well-known artists to paint vast murals on the facades of The Hive’s businesses, and the end results are spectacular. After enjoying some wine or beer, spend time walking around the art complex and capture your own artistic images of the magnificent murals.

Discover Your Inner Artist For nine weeks during the summer and six weekends in the winter, the Sawdust Art Festival (www.sawdustartfestival.org) draws thousands of visitors to shop along sawdust-covered paths in an eclectic, hand-built village of fine art. One of the best-known experiences in the city, Sawdust operates as a nonprofit dedicated to educating the public and promoting the creations of local artisans. Sawdust also offers a year-round art program on-site called Sawdust Art Classes, featuring an array of hands-on art and studio workshops taught by working artists. From learning how to paint silk scarves to photo-enameling and gemstone bracelet-making, the options for beginners and advanced artists are endless.

Admire California Art Laguna Art Museum (www.lagunaartmuseum.org) cares for and exhibits works of art that were created by California artists in addition to works that represent the life and history of the state. The museum is unlike any other in the state as it collects only art from California, with pieces dating from the 19th century to present day. A visit here provides a unique opportunity to get to know The Golden State through the lens of a variety of different artistic styles.

Catch a Show Harrison Ford famously got his acting start at the Laguna Playhouse (www.lagunaplayhouse.com), a historic Equity theater located in the arts district. The playhouse is known for its year-round season of comedies, dramas, musicals, stand-up comedy and family shows, often featuring stars from the stage and screen. In fact, film star Melanie Griffith recently had a limited-run performing in The Graduate at the playhouse. You never know who you might catch at the playhouse so it’s a worthwhile inclusion during your visit.

Grab a Bite With some of the most gorgeous beaches in Southern California, it’s no wonder that many Laguna restaurants pride themselves on having unbelievable beach views. The Deck on Laguna Beach (www.deckonlaguna.com) provides the ultimate oceanfront experience, specializing in decadent culinary and cocktail creations that can be savored while smelling the fresh sea breeze. Located across the street from the beach, Mozambique (www.mozambiqueoc.com) offers three levels of dining, including a veranda rooftop that boasts stunning panoramic ocean views best enjoyed with a plate of wood-fired steaks or seafood. And, of course, there is The Loft, situated on the fourth floor of the Montage Laguna Beach (www.montagehotels.com). This popular spot not only has oceanfront views, but also features an incredible menu of inventive American cuisine. Other notable spots include La Sirena Grill (www.lasirenagrill. com) for traditional Mexican cuisine; Watermarc (www.watermarcrestaurant.com), which has a wine list spanning more than 200 bottles; and Maro Wood Grill (www.marowoodgrill.com), an Argentinianinspired restaurant which features fare cooked over an open fire.

Where to Stay With an abundance of hotel choices, choosing where to stay in Laguna Beach can be a bit challenging as no option is a bad option. For full-on luxury and five-star service, consider the Montage Laguna Beach, situated on 30 acres in the heart of the city. The luxurious 250-room resort offers sweeping panoramas of the Pacific Ocean from its incredible decks and balconies as well as its elegant guest rooms and suites. For a more intimate experience, try Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa (www.casalaguna.com), which was ranked among the top 25 small hotels in the U.S. by TripAdvisor in 2013 and recognized as part of Condé Nast Traveler’s hot list and reader’s choice awards in 2017. The adults-only bed-and-breakfast is conveniently located across the street from the beach and serves as a quiet sanctuary in the midst of the beach town. Alternatively, head into the woods to spend time at one of National Geographic Traveler’s unique lodges of the world. The Ranch at Laguna Beach (www.theranchlb.com), an 87-acre luxury property with a nine-hole golf course set among the Aliso and Wood canyons, seamlessly blends a classic beach cottage feel in the off-the-beaten-path environs of a canyon.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ Wines from The Golden State’s acclaimed vines BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

California produces more than 80% of all wines made in the country and is the fourth largest producer of wine in the world behind the nations of France, Spain and Italy. As such, it’s truly the unofficial wine capital of the United States, and harvest season is honored annually during California Wine Month in September. To celebrate, here are some standout varietals from the region. 39007 The Prisoner Wine Company A chenin blanc with a touch of viognier, expect this wine to showcase floral notes, cantaloupe and golden delicious apples on the nose. Velvety and smooth, it also tastes of lush pineapple, honey and ripe peaches with bright acidity for balance. $37. www.theprisonerwinecompany.com. 2018 Carneros Chardonnay Rombauer Vineyards Known for its combination of peach, mango, citrus and vanilla spice on the nose and palate, seamlessly combined with a creamy and slightly buttery texture, this is California chardonnay at its best. It is rich and round, marrying the different components in harmony. $38. www.rombauer.com. 2017 Pauli Ranch Barbera Portalupi Wine A red Italian grape varietal, this Barbera, which began distribution in Arizona in August, has formidable acidity with black plum and licorice notes. The touch of smoke and white pepper at the finish rounds out the flavors and makes it a perfect food-pairing wine. $42. www.portalupiwine.com. 2017 Blue Rock Viognier Blue Rock Vineyard An expressive wine with aromas of violets and peaches, this viognier starts with tastes of honey, poached pears and lemon before hints of clove and vanilla seep in at the finish. It stands up well to creamy and spicy foods. $45. www.bluerockvineyard.com. 2015 Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay Newton Vineyard This vibrant chardonnay has a bouquet of citrus blossom, brioche and marzipan on the nose and

flavors of lime zest, jasmine and honeydew in each sip. Its wonderful intensity is comprised of equal parts smoky oak and juicy acidity. $55. www.newtonvineyard.com. 2015 Rodgers Creek Syrah Longboard Vineyards This rich, robust varietal is both earthy and savory without as many of the jammy elements one might find in a syrah grown in hotter areas. Instead, look for dark cherry and white pepper notes. $56. www.longboardvineyards.com. 2016 John C. Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Nickel & Nickel Winery Approachable yet structured and elegant, this wine delights with notes of cherry as well as delicate herbs and even a touch of earthiness. The softness is tempered well with a naturally acidic finish thanks to the bold tannins. $125. www.nickelandnickel.com. 2014 Hommage Cabernet Sauvignon Clos Pegase A luxurious estate blend, this cabernet is deep in color and intensity with hints of rich cocoa and espresso on the nose. It then explodes with juicy red fruit before giving way to an essence of cedar and dark chocolate in each sip. $125. www.clospegase.com. 1919 Mary Doyle Williamson Wines A 2014 Bordeaux vintage made from Sonoma and Napa fruit, expect sharp minerality followed by the distinct aromas and flavors of blueberry and blackberry as it decants. Nuanced to perfection, it finishes with an unlikely yet quite heavenly combination of violet, rose petals and mocha. $265. www.williamsonwines.com.

Deseo at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa takes pride in thoughtfully showcasing flavors from Latin America. Its Arroz con Marisco ($27) entree, for example, is inspired by a popular Central and South American dish. To make, the team combines rice with garlic, peppers, onions, tomatoes, and about 10 different spices to attain a paella-like, sofrito-style rice, finishing it with white wine and lemon. Then, a rich broth is made using fish stock, garlic and an aji amarillo pepper. Butter, littleneck clams, shrimp and black mussels are then added, and it’s simmered until the shells open. To plate, the rice is centered in a bowl, and the seafood is artfully positioned around it. The creamy broth is then spooned on top, and it’s complemented by sourdough crostini that’s been grilled with garlicy rouille sauce. Deseo, 6902 E. PARTY TIME EXCELLENT Dive into OBON’s Asian-inspired shareable sipper

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE

OBON Sushi + Bar + Ramen, which is now open at The Grove in McCormick Ranch after making its first Valley debut at Scottsdale Quarter in 2017, combines modern interpretations of Japanese fare with Korean influences – and a hint of kitsch. “Keeping this in mind, our playful cocktail program creatively showcases Asian ingredients and flavors without taking itself too seriously,” says OBON mixologist Marlee Palmer. Party Time Excellent ($22), a highlight of the current pop culture-themed drink menu and named for the famed catchphrase in Wayne’s World, illustrates this to a T – and is available at The Grove location only. “We use three key Asian ingredients here: yuzu, tobanjan and Ramune,” Palmer says. “While many have heard of yuzu, an Asian fruit best described as a cross between a lime and grapefruit, the other two are likely foreign to most guests.” According to Palmer, tobanjan is a chili bean sauce often used to add spice to food and drinks across Asia, while Ramune is a Japanese soda similar to Sprite. “In a shaker, we combine yuzu and tobanjan with Green Mark Vodka, Citadelle Gin, Gran Agave Blanco Tequila, and Royal Standard Dry White Rum, plus housemade tropical fruit juice and lime,” Palmer says. The contents are strained into globeshaped fishbowl glass rimmed with zesty tahin. Then, Ramune is poured on top, with the bottle being left sticking out from the glass as a playful garnish. The cocktail is finished with two mini umbrellas and brightly colored straws for easily sharing among two people (or having all to yourself!). “It starts out sweet before being balanced by all the citrus and spice notes, which results in a perfectly refreshing finish,” Palmer says. CHEF CONVERSATIONS

In the kitchen with Ron Dimas of Orange Sky at Talking Stick Resort and Casino

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE

Ron Dimas is chef de cuisine at Talking Stick Resort’s Orange Sky, where he focuses on setting guests’ senses ablaze with an elevated fusion of Southwestern and New American cuisines as impressive as the 15th floor restaurant’s view at sunset.

Did you always intend on being a chef? My dad was a history professor at Arizona State University, so I grew up wanting to travel the world and soak up all of its rich history firsthand. In the mid-1980s, I was accepted into ASU with the goal of eventually working as a traveling videographer. What happened? Given my dad worked at ASU, I could attend tuition-free, save for the cost of books and parking. So, in 1986, I got a job in the kitchen at the then-newly opened Tempe Buttes. I fell in love with the hustle in the back of the house juxtaposed by the elegance of the front of the house, not to mention dreaming up delicious dishes. Tell us about your journey to Orange Sky. There are 26 years between Tempe Buttes and joining Talking Stick Resort’s inaugural culinary team in 2010. Those years are filled with so many special ingredients, menus and chef mentors – notably chef Charles Wiley – as well as jobs at Boulders Resort & Spa, Hotel Valley Ho, The Wigwam, and Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, to name a few. What is your favorite thing to cook, either at Orange Sky or otherwise? It’s a tie. I love off-cuts of meat such as shanks and cheeks as well as game, notably elk. Are you there any foods or ingredients you dislike? Deepak Chopra once visited a restaurant where I worked and handed us asafoetida powder – an Indian spice that smells like onions and rotten eggs – asking we incorporate it into a dish. The smell almost knocked me out If you weren’t a chef, what would you do as a career? I love working with my hands, so I would likely be building furniture or wood-carving. Taste FOOD FILES

FLAVORS OF THE MONTH Ingredients inspiring local chefs and their menus

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Heirloom Beets

Chef Justin Macy, Terras at Civana Macy loves the earthy richness of heirloom beets and the color they bring to any plate. Currently, Macy lets them serve as the star of the dish rather than a side item in his appropriately-named heirloom beet appetizer. Macy slow-roasts the root vegetables before plating them with a drizzle of cold-pressed olive oil and pairing them with goat cheese coulis, fresh lemon, and micro arugula. The combination results in deliciously interesting textures and flavors that contrast. $13. www.civana.com.

Purple Sweet Potatoes

Chef Dejan Djukic, Meritage, an Urban Tavern Beyond the gorgeous color, Djukic names purple sweet potatoes as his favorite because he was first inspired to get into the kitchen when he saw them at a restaurant at age 18. He now pays homage to them daily at JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge in his fall halibut with sweet potatoes. In the dish, the halibut is poached in white wine and butter to ensure tenderness, and the sweet potatoes are paired with other seasonal vegetables and topped with a Thai basil beurre blanc sauce to give it a rich kick. $32. www.jwdesertridge.com.

IPA Vinegar

Chef Mike Bouwens, Modern Oysterbar Chophouse According to Bouwens, this small-batch vinegar is made without oak aging, and actual aromatic hops – as in beer hops – are incorporated before bottling it to enhance the tanginess and tartness of the vinegar. It’s among the secret ingredients in his Modern creamed corn, which also features cotija cheese, smoked mascarpone and chiles. A twist on the rich classic, this version is just as decadent, but with a distinct zip of delightful zest in every bite. $10. www.modernoysterbarchophouse.com.

We all play favorites now and then – even chefs! As such, we asked some of the Valley’s top culinary creators to share one of their favorite ingredients and how they’re incorporating it into a dish or multiple dishes on their current menus.

Mesquite Flour

Chef Andrew Holowicki, Garden Court Cafe When Holowicki moved to Arizona in the late 1990s, he stumbled on the then-relatively unknown ingredient of mesquite flour, which is indigenous to Arizona. Quickly falling in love with its local heritage and its hints of nuttiness, Holowicki has used it in his dishes for two decades, including pairing it with bananas and pecans his mesquite pancakes. They are available at The Scottsdale Plaza Resort’s Garden Court Cafe, which is open to locals and hotel guests daily. $14. www.scottsdaleplaza.com.

one of his favorite ways to add texture and a hint of salt to any dish. He especially loves incorporating cancha in his ceviche peruano – a riff on classic ceviche – along with fresh hamachi, grilled baby yams, red onions, and leche de tigre, which is the Peruvian term for the citrus-based marinade that cures the seafood in a ceviche. $17. www.scottsdale.hyatt.com.

McClendon’s Squash Blossoms

Chef Jeremy Pacheco, Lon’s at The Hermosa Inn An advocate of sourcing as locally as possible, Pacheco loves Peoria-based McClendon’s Select Organic Farm’s squash blossoms due to their versatility and vicinity. Each summer and into the fall, Pacheco offers Bob’s squash blossoms on the menu in homage to the farm’s founder. This year, the blossoms are stuffed with housemade chorizo and a blend of pepper jack and cheddar cheeses before being delicately battered and fried. They are served atop a corn pudding that is made from McClendon’s corn and garnished with slices of pickled peppers. $15. www.lons.com.

Broccoli di Rape

Cherrywood Smoked Bacon

Chef Adam Jaramillo, Eddie Merlot’s According to Jaramillo, you’ve not truly had bacon until you’ve had it smoked over the embers of cherrywood, enhancing both the smokiness and saltiness of the pork while also bringing out its sweet notes. His favorite way to utilize this bacon is by offering it in his bacon gorgonzola cheese crust, which is available as an enhancement atop any of Eddie Merlot’s steaks, notably on the 10-ounce filet mignon. $51.90. www.eddiemerlots.com.

Chef Marcellino Verzino, Marcellino Ristorante Verzino grew up harvesting (and enjoying) this member of the mustard green and turnip family while on his family’s farm in Italy. He loves its combination of savory and pungent flavors and uses it in his strozzapreti con broccoli di rape to pay homage to his childhood while giving the handcrafted pasta a flavorful zip. A side benefit, according to Verzino, is that the healthy vegetables are good sources of vitamins A, C and K as well as calcium, folate and iron. $24. www.marcellinoristorante.com.

Aleppo Pepper

Chef Nate Larsen, Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen Larsen is a longtime fan of this spice, which is often used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines. He likes that it offers moderate heat to any dish, yet is balanced with notes of fruit and cumin. Currently, the spice is front and center in his chili-rubbed prawns. Once plated, the prawns are complemented by slices of citrus, locally-sourced olives, and a beurre blanc sauce. Then, the entire dish is topped with Aleppo pepper as the pièce de résistance, bringing together the spicy, sweet and earthy elements of each component. $21. www.andazscottsdale.com.

Cancha

Chef Joaquin M. Estolano Jr., SWB, a southwest bistro Estolano loves playing up his South American roots in as many dishes as possible, especially using cancha, a Peruvian take on corn nuts and

HEATING UP THE SCENE

The Hot Chick neighborhood hangout and game bar opens in Old Town Scottsdale

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

In recent months, The Hot Chick, equal parts a retro and rad bar with games, cocktails and nostalgia to boot, opened its doors in Old Town Scottsdale. The concept – neighborhood bar meets arcade meets Southern comfort fare – comes to Scottsdale by Jocque Concepts, the team behind Dirty Pretty, American Junkie, Pussycat Lounge, Original ChopShop, The Montauk, and Diego Pops. The best way to describe the 7,000-square-foot adult playground: a lot. From vibrant colors to crafty cocktails to classic games of all kinds, there is a lot of everything, everywhere. First, there are the games. Expect 30-plus retro arcade games including Ms Pacman, Galaga, Super Mario Bros, NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat, and Frogger. Then, there are more recently released modern-day bar favorites including Golden Tee Golf and Big Buck Hunter. Beyond the arcade-style games, there are multiple pinball machines, Skee-Ball, pool, pingpong tables, darts, cornhole/bags, and dozens of board games. There are also more than 30 flatscreen TVs inside and out, a state-of-the-art audio and video system, and a DJ space,

98

So Scottsdale! September ‘19

where regular guest DJs perform several nights per week and all weekend. Beyond the visual and audio stimulation, there is the food, which is served in what can best be described as a camper and includes fast-casual comfort offerings such as The Hot Chick signature organic, free-range, antibiotic- and hormone-free fried chicken as well as sandwiches, chicken wings, salads, and an early guest favorite – housemade biscuits with indulgent whipped maple butter. On Saturday and Sunday, brunch is offered until 2 p.m. and features a specialty menu with biscuits and gravy, a chicken sausage egg sandwich, a riff on chicken and waffles, and simply a plain bowl of cereal with milk, among other things. Each of the signature cocktails ($10) – available during brunch and normal weekday hours – is an homage to a classic movie or line in a classic movie. There’s The Godfather, made with vodka, gin, rum, blanco tequila, sweet and sour, and Mexican coke as well as Coming to America, made with Ketel One Citron Vodka, sweet and sour, ginger liqueur, ginger beer, Blue Curacao, and Peychaud’s Bitters. For the beer-minded, there are beers offered in cans and bottles as well as 10 draft options including a rotating Four Peaks brew, Guinness and cider. The wine menu is short and sweet, with one chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir option each as well as a canned rosé and more traditional rosé bottle, plus four sparkling selections. Specials are offered daily and vary by day. For example, there is “Magic 8Ball Monday” where game play is free with the purchase of any drink and several beers are discounted to $3 or $4 each. Several nights a week, there are also tournaments – from pool to Skee-Ball to cornhole – that anyone can join. The Hot Chick, 4363 N. 75th St., Scottsdale; 480.550.7819; www.thehotchickaz.com.
