YOU ASKED!

Q:

Dr. Gino Tutera, SottoPelle® founder answers your questions.

Why are so many people now getting hormone replacement using pellets?

Q: When did pellet therapy start? A: Pellet therapy originated in Europe over 75

years ago and was introduced to the U.S. by Dr. Greenblatt at the University of Georgia. Pellet hormone therapy has been extensively researched and studied in medical journals all over the world since 1935, yet many people don’t realize that pellet therapy was actually regularly employed in the United States from the 1940’s through the 1970’s until pharmaceutical marketing intruded. Pellets were designed to change the internal physiology by reconstructing the hormone levels as close to what a woman or a man would possess in their late thirties or early forties.

Q: Why did you get involved? A: I became involved with pellet therapy at Eisenhower Medical Hospital, in Rancho Mirage, CA, in 1992. I was approached by Dr. Donald McEwen to see if I could help him insert pellets. I agreed but asked, “What are pellets?” This is the exact same response I hear from other doctors every day all over the world. Dr. Donald McEwen was taught by Dr. Greenblatt, so you might say this is only two degrees of separation from the physician who first started working with them in the U.S. The more I spoke and worked with patients the more I realized there was a need to individualize the dose for each patient’s HRT treatment. We all don’t wear the same size shoe, so why would anyone expect everyone to have the same pellet dose? A light bulb went off and I started individualizing patients with their own customized dose, which is widely used today.

Q: Fear not the testosterone pellet! A: The majority of people fear hormones and especially testosterone. What they don’t realize is every human being, including women, needs and makes testosterone. As a matter of fact, women make 300mgm/day when they are in their prime! Testosterone pellets can be used to treat migraines and menstrual headaches. It can be an effective treatment for vaginal dryness, incontinence, urinary urgency and frequency. In both men and women, testosterone has been shown to increase energy, relieve depression, increase sense of well-being, relieve anxiety and improve memory and concentration. Testosterone pellets can increase lean body mass (muscle strength, bone density) and decrease fat mass. Men and women need continuous adequate levels which can only be achieved with testosterone pellets for optimal mental and physical health and for the prevention of chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, which have been associated with low testosterone levels.

Q: What makes your practice so different than anyone else doing pellets? A: I pioneered an innovative method of customized dosing that provides each patient with a precise amount of the highest quality bio-identical hormone suited to his or her individual needs. Prior to this development, patients were administered a one-size-fits-all generic dose of hormone, which is less effective and can trigger unwanted side effects. Many practices offer bio-identical hormone pellets but do not use our unique patent-pending dosing system based on science. For them it might be guesswork. While often copied but never duplicated, SottoPelle remains the leader in pellet hormone therapy with its ground-breaking science.

While we have the usual list of typical galas, gatherings, shows and concerts around town, January is also the month where the Valley is home to a variety of signature events, from golf tournaments to car auctions to art shows to yes, this year, the start of Super Bowl week. When I think of all that’s going on, I realize how lucky I am to live here. There are thousands from around the world who will be traveling to our hometown this month to take part in these events. While they’re here, they’ll eat at our amazing restaurants, many of which have topnotch celebrity chefs at the helm. They’ll shop at everywhere from our small boutiques to our top designer stores. HEALING THROUGH ART Karen Puthoff is working to eradicate the stigma tied to behavioral illness, one artist at a time BY SHANA SCHWARZ PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

“I’m sorry, I get a little passionate about it,” says Karen Puthoff, as we chat about PSA Art Awakenings. Talk with Puthoff for 10 minutes and there’s no mistaking her commitment to the PSA Behavioral Health Agency, where she serves as deputy CEO. Under continued… JANUARY 2015 |

up close that group, she helps to oversee several programs that benefit people dealing with behavioral health issues, including the Art Awakenings program. Her journey took a few detours, but she couldn’t be happier to be where she is now. “I had been in behavioral health since 1982 and that was Indiana,” she explains. “My husband’s work brought us to Arizona in 1996. I didn’t work for four years and I didn’t know that I’d ever go back to work. I had worked all my life and even when I was in school I was always working. I was a bit burned out on behavioral health. Then a friend called me and said there’s this really cool art program and it’s right down the road. She said, ‘You’ve got to check this out—people use art to heal from mental health issues and it is the coolest.’ I took this position at half of what I would usually make independently and started as their marketing person. Before I knew it, I was president of Art Awakenings, and now I’m the Deputy CEO of PSA Behavioral Health, which is the parent company.

Art Awakenings is merely one of their programs, but because Art Awakenings is such a glamorous program, it gets most of the attention. They had five locations then and now we’ve grown from five to 13 locations.” With her background in behavioral health, Puthoff has known for years that there is so much more to treating mental illness than traditional treatment. She’s excited to see how the program has grown over the years, and how it has helped so many people. “To walk into a studio you’d have no idea it is a behavioral health provider because we believe in integration and the staff blends in with the participants,” she explains. “We don’t refer to anyone as a patient; we refer to them as artists. If they come to any of our other programs, they are a participant because we don’t want to stigmatize the fact that they just happen to have a mental illness. One in four people are affected by a mental illness. It’s far more common than diabetes

or heart disease, but still there’s just so much stigma attached to it. It’s a really cool program.” The opportunities for artists in the program are varied to ensure that everyone can find the right medium to express themselves. While many participants paint, others create jewelry or pottery, while others might use music or writing to work through their issues. “You come into the studio and you see someone sitting there drawing and you think that’s all it is, but it’s more than that,” she says. “Everyone is engaged in a curriculum that has a treatment component that is processed throughout the day. They are truly working on their recovery while they are learning a skill that helps them create artwork, and maybe earn their first paycheck that they’ve ever earned in their life. With children it’s primarily art therapy, and with the adults it’s therapeutic expressive art. If one of our staff doesn’t know how to do it, often one of our artists probably does. It’s especially geared towards people where traditional therapy hasn’t worked for them.” Like any good leader, Puthoff is quick to point to those around her as the keys to success. “The thing that makes our program click is the staff,” she says. “The artists have coined a phrase ‘art saves lives.’ When we try to describe what it is that makes the program work, the artists call it the magic. This is where the magic happens—in the studio—because that’s where their recovery journeys begin. I attribute it to the staff. They are all required to have art skills. It really is the staff who connect with the artists, who have the skills, and the expertise to connect with everyone. There are 200 people enrolled in the Downtown studio, so there can be a lot of people in there at any given time, and all of our staff knows the names of every single person in there.” For more information on the program and/or how to purchase the artists’ creations (“My house looks like an Art Awakenings commercial. All but four pieces of art in that house were created by our artists,” laughs Puthoff), visit www.artawakenings.org.

ANDREA EVANS TALKS SHOP In The Pink offers fun finds BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

M

uch like its owner, In The Pink boutique is an eclectic and bubbly breath of fresh air. Owner Andrea Evans’ industry expertise is backed by her degree in fashion merchandising, coupled with a minor in business. After working at In The Pink Boutique (at 4422 E. Camelback Road, Ste. B, Phoenix; www.inthepinkboutique. com), she loved it so much that she bought it. “I loved the ‘girliness’ and atmosphere of the store,” she explains. “People’s reactions when they came in were great. They were always saying this was such a happy place. That kind of stuck with me. “I felt there was never going to be ‘the right time’ to buy a business. I always wanted a store and it was one of those things where I decided to go for it,” she says. Her goals for her boutique are to bring in a younger crowd, and to offer different and unique items for her clients. In The Pink offers gifts and unique décor ranging from lighting, pillows and wall décor to jewelry, candles, bath accessories, and some men’s gifts.

Etc.

What is a hot, must-have In The Pink item for the New Year? One thing I like to do with decorating is I love changing pillows around on a couch or chair because I feel it can totally change the look of a room. I have pillows in orange and blue right now, and some red ones that are cool. What do you love about owning and operating In The Pink? I love meeting people and helping people. I’ve always been the person who doesn’t receive gifts very well but I love to do gifts for everyone. Having someone excited about what they’re getting for someone else is what I really love about it. Where do you see yourself with this boutique five years from now? I love my location and the size of my store because it’s manageable. The thing I’ve always wanted to do is open another place, maybe in California. But I always want to keep it exclusive—just one here and one in California. UPTOWN |

REBEL ON THE RISE

Kasten Spethmann is only just getting started BY SHANA SCHWARZ PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

A

long with her co-founder Frank Cappello, Kasten Spethmann is revolutionizing the beauty industry with her new company, Sophisticated Rebel. Their first product, the Forever Blade (“A flat, sleek, metal lipstick applicator that can be refilled and engraved, and even worn as jewelry, that is about the size of a lighter,” explains Spethmann), is currently available for pre-order. “We joined forces when he was in the middle of trying to design a Swiss Army Knife for women—where each blade was a separate cosmetic necessity,” says Spethmann. “That was a huge project to start off with, so together we decided to focus first on the cornerstone of the makeup industry, and that's what led to a flat-shaped lipstick applicator. Only later did we discover it could be refilled, and that's when we decided to make it out of stainless steel so it could last forever.” Gone are the days when lipstick can only be purchased in a cumbersome tube, much to the delight of any woman who has ever tried to cram beauty products in a clutch. “Also, the flat metal lipstick is just the start,” says Spethmann. “We intend to release the various cosmetic ‘Blades’ of that initial Swiss Army Knife concept.” To pre-order a Forever Blade or keep up with upcoming product launches, visit www.sophisticatedrebel.com.

Etc.

What did you have engraved on your Blade? The first engraving I had done was my [first] name. I think my next one will say Perseverance. For gifts I got my best friend one that says Bestie. If they named a lipstick color after you, what would it be called? Resilient. Maybe Resilient Red, Resilient Rouge, Resilient Rose, or just Resilient Rebel. What is Rebel with a Cause? Sophisticated Rebel believes in paying it forward—sharing success, if you will. Rebel with a Cause is the non-profit arm of Sophisticated Rebel. It is a fund that will grant money to people or organizations that embody the Sophisticated Rebel spirit. UPTOWN |

RESHAPE YOUR MIND, BODY & SPIRIT WITH HOT YOGA. A stronger, toned and more flexible body and an improved state of mind encouraging relaxation, selfacceptance and awareness. “In a yoga class, you practice poses that require stretching and compression of the joints, muscles, ligaments and other supporting structures of the body.

Your body naturally protects itself from physical exertion by generating heat from the inside muscles outwards. We start with the heat up front…providing that extra protection from the very first poses. Your body burns fat more effectively and you lose inches of shape in a relatively short time”.

F

or Chrissy Sayare, style isn’t just an outfit that she puts on every day—it’s how she lives her life. Every day she gets up in the morning, dresses to impress, and heads to her store To Be Continued... A Consignment Boutique located at The Shops at Hilton Village. Sayare is a big believer in investing in key pieces for her wardrobe and dressing right for her body and lifestyle, which is what she strives to do each day. She tends to mix classic staples in her closet with unique and vintage pieces from her travels. In the summer, you can usually find her in a dress and heels, and in the winter, she mixes it up with leather leggings and classic jackets. But, no matter what season it is, you most likely won’t find her in a pair of sweats or casual wear. Some of Sayare’s favorite brands are Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, and Chanel. She does love designers, but she also loves a good bargain. In her spare time, she enjoys doing hot yoga, spending time with her husband, shopping, going out to the city’s hottest restaurants, and traveling. Some of her favorite places to travel are Paris, Greece, London and Boston. What are some of your favorite lunch and dinner spots around town? I love going to the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa Montelucia for lunch. It always makes me feel like I am on vacation. For dinner, you can find us at Steak 44, Bianco’s Italian Restaurant, and Slanted Rice in Hilton Village. You mentioned you love Chanel. What is the one piece of Chanel in your closet that you can’t live without? I am a Chanel lover… my necklaces and pins are so easy to wear with almost anything. They raise any mediocre outfit to fabulous. So, I’d say I can’t live without those.

His clients could just as easily be called fans, even traveling from other states because they’ll trust no one else with their tresses – and if you talk to any of them, be prepared for some enthusiastic gushing. Renowned for his skill, Gentry has become one of the most sought-after stylists in the Valley. Before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry owned and operated his own salon in Chicago, where he perfected the techniques for which he’s become legendary. Now located in the Sachi Studios, he brings modern, big-city style, infused with a hearty splash of Midwestern charm that makes clients feel instantly comfortable: a combination which, more often than not, garners an unshakable loyalty. Drawing on years of experience, with a keen eye and attention to detail, Gentry strives to bring out the best in each of his clients, whether doing a routine trim or a dramatic hair makeover. He not only focuses on the style and color, but on restoring the health of the hair to full vitality, strength, and shine. “I don’t skimp when it comes to products,” he says. “I use the highquality stuff. It’s all top of the line.” In Gentry’s capable hands damaged hair doesn’t stand a chance, transforming from dry, frizzy, lackluster locks, often within just a few sessions. Above all, Gentry specializes in color. Highlights are expertly placed to accentuate his clients’ features, color custom-designed to flatter each

ful, but if it’s not part of their lifestyle, they’re not going to be able to maintain it,” he says. For 2015, Gentry forecasts several trends: Salted Caramel Hair Color to Chocolate Truffle hair color, Boho Waves, braids , long ponytails and twists are just a few of the things we can look forward to. And he’ll be bringing these styles – and more – to the Valley, with the kind of pride and expertise he’s become.

unique skin tone. He uses innovative methods and premium products (enzyme-based, rather than damaging peroxides) to ensure perfect results every time, and stays updated on the latest advances in the industry in order to keep clients trendy and cuttingedge. “The key to success is education,” he says. Gentry’s clientele achieve not only a fabulous look and healthier hair, but a style which can be easily managed and replicated outside the salon. His goal is to leave each person feeling as amazing every day as they do when they leave his side – because every style has to work in the real world. To do this, he takes the time to learn about their daily lives, ensuring plenty of one-onone time by never double-booking. “You can give them something beauti-

ife has come full circle for former San Francisco 49er Gregory Joelson, who now lives in the Valley again decades after graduating from Arizona State University. He and his wife were both student athletes (football and swimming, respectively), and are now busy getting a new business opportunity up and running. “My wife and I now have two new Papa Murphy’s Pizza locations open and operating in the Phoenix area,” explains Joelson. “We are really excited to be part of a new and wonderful community.” Joelson, who has lived in cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver and Seoul, Korea, has a style that reflects his background and love of travel. “As I think about it, sometimes I tend to wear items that could be described as a bit unconventional, almost bohemian,” he says. “Simple and understated in nature, somehow coordinated, but occasionally amplified with a little embellishment. Maybe that’s a result of living in a variety of cities and countries for so many years.” If you see an especially sharply dressed man behind a Papa Murphy’s counter, now you’ll know why. Be sure to say hi. Who is your fashion inspiration? That would have to be my dad. He always looks sharp. He always looks very stylish and very classy. In fact, you’ll find several of his items in my closet. Sorry, Dad… What do you like to do on the weekend? When I’m not in the stores mixing dough or greeting our patrons, you can always find me with my family. My wife and I have a 2-year old daughter, Teagan. I never dreamt that a little tea party could be so much fun. Are there fashion rules you never break? I’ve never given that much thought since I’m pretty open to a lot of styles. But, as I consider the question, I have never purchased an item that has their label on display. I won’t wear it.

CAROLYN MULLANYJACKSON IS EXCITED TO HELP BARRETT-JACKSON MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY BY SHANA SCHWARZ PHOTO BY MICHAEL FRANCO

| JANUARY 2015

The Jackson family has been making the Valley a better place for decades now, as their auctions and other events always have a strong emphasis on philanthropy. The newest member of the family, Carolyn, married Craig Jackson just over two years ago, and jumped right in to keep that momentum going. “I was born and raised in Manhattan,” says Mullany-Jackson of the life that brought her to this point. “My career in finance took me from Wall Street to San Francisco. Never one to shy away from a challenge, I moved to Jackson Hole, Wyo. for two years before real estate projects brought me to Las Vegas, and it was through that career that Craig and I connected.” “Craig and I met in 2008,” she says of her now-husband. “Mutual friends set us up on a date. I was extremely busy and he was busy. It’s kind of a running joke between us.” The two didn’t reconnect for two years. Naturally, it was over work. “We reconnected in 2010 when I was working with Las Vegas headliner Danny Gans’ estate after his sudden passing. The estate wanted to sell the home in a quiet manner. In touring the property, they opened the door to an incredible garage and said they didn’t know what to do with this remarkable car collection.

“I immediately thought that Barrett-Jackson would be a great way to handle that, so I reached out to Craig. It was a wonderful experience that provided some closure to the family. The sale of that collection is what connected us–we dated immediately and we were engaged within the first year.” From there, Carolyn has been by Craig’s side as they work together to grow what his family built. “I can’t help but take an interest in his business,” she says. “When we first started to date, I was fascinated with the auction business, from the live-event production to the television component. It’s been very rewarding and interesting. I have tremendous respect when I look at people who have been at Barrett-Jackson for decades. What they do and how they do their work is very impressive to me. And I love the charitable component of the auction. I have often described our Scottsdale auction as a task that is both Herculean and Sisyphean. I am always in awe of the work that the team at BarrettJackson does, and I am honored to work alongside them.” Though the whole Jackson family has always supported local and

“IT’S BEEN VERY REWARDING AND INTERESTING, AND THERE’S SO MUCH TO LEARN. I HAVE TREMENDOUS RESPECT WHEN I LOOK AT PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN AT BARRETT-JACKSON FOR DECADES. WHAT THEY DO AND HOW THEY DO THEIR WORK IS VERY IMPRESSIVE TO ME. AND I LOVE THE CHARITABLE COMPONENT OF THE AUCTION.”

national charities, it was Craig’s late mother, Nellie Jackson, whose commitment to giving back initially inspired the rest. One such group that she loved to support is one that is helping to eradicate child abuse. “Nellie Jackson was a staunch supporter of Childhelp, as was her son Brian Jackson,” says Jackson. “Twelve years ago it was Linda Pope and Michelle Robson who approached Nellie and Craig about the concept of Drive the Dream. Barrett-Jackson hosted the Drive the Dream Gala for a decade, and last year marked the inaugural year for the Nellie Jackson award. Barrett-Jackson is schedule to sell a charity car in support of Childhelp this year.”

Recently, Craig and Carolyn Jackson co-chaired The Sound of Speed (www.soundofspeed.org), an event benefiting the Phoenix Symphony. It drew some of the greatest names in philanthropy and sports, including Jeff Gordon, who unveiled a car he will be selling at Barrett-Jackson this month for charity–the Jeff Gorden Children’s Foundation. “When we were approached about working on an event with the Phoenix Symphony, we could not help but think that it was a project that Nellie Jackson would have loved. The Sound of Speed was an ambitious, first-of-its kind event. We had the privilege of co-chairing the event with Melanie and Rob Walton, UPTOWN |

and Nan and C.A. Howlett. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Jim Ward and Katie Cobb and their team at the Phoenix Symphony. “We loved it and the Symphony was extremely pleased. We just solidified with the Phoeninx Symphony that we are doing it again next year. It was awe-inspiring to see how the evening came together and to see how the car community in Arizona came out to support the event. One of the goals of The Sound of Speed was to expose people to the Symphony who might not attend the Symphony. Numerous people said they were moved to tears by some of the video tributes; I just loved to hear that. I’m looking incredibly forward to doing it again next year. “I do like that aspect where we

really try to carry on Craig’s family’s legacy, especially his mother’s. It’s an honor to further the support for these causes, especially the ones that were important to Nellie Jackson.” In addition to supporting the arts, there are several charities that are chosen each year by BarrettJackson as beneficiaries of certain car sales proceeds. “This year, the Ron Pratte collection is selling the Futurliner. It’s a concept vehicle that was built by GM. Pratte is tremendously charitable and he is donating 100 percent of the proceeds of that vehicle to the Armed Forces Foundation. There are certain moments that will be tear-jerkers, and that’s one of them.”

A veteran who served with the US Army’s 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam during 1968, Pratte will donate all proceeds from the Futurliner to the Armed Forces Foundation. The organization is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to supporting and advocating for active-duty military personnel, National Guardsmen, Reservists, military families and veterans. The AFF covers travel, hotel rooms, home mortgages, car payments and daily expenses for families so they can stay at a loved one’s side during treatment and recovery from wounds suffered in war. “Military veterans, especially wounded warriors, deserve our appreciation and our support,” says Pratte. “Their continued sacrifices give Americans the freedom to build happy, productive lives. With the help of the great team at Barrett-Jackson, I look forward to raising funds that will make AFF’s mission a success.” “Another locally based charity that we are actively involved in is TGen. In 2010, Craig established the Russ and Brian Jackson Cancer Research Fund at TGen in honor of his father and brother, whose lives were both cut short by colon cancer. Craig’s vision will enable TGen scientists and physicians to accelerate the development of new diagnostic tests and JANUARY 2015 |

therapies for patients battling colon and prostate cancer.” From exciting sales to big donations to charity, there are exciting times to be had at each auction. “There are so many moments,” says Mullany-Jackson when asked for a favorite memory. “Attending an auction can be an emotional roller coaster. You can see these sales that are incredibly meaningful; there’s history attached with cars so each sale is so personal. It’s so hard to pinpoint one moment. “The one moment that always strikes a chord with me personally is that Craig proposed at the auction. He blindsided me and then announced our engagement at the closing of an auction on live television. My parents called me and my father’s first question was, ‘Does he not have our telephone number?’ My parents were watching the auction and that’s how they found out I was engaged! I was mortified because I’m rather shy and Craig is the one that’s always on camera. You’ll never see me near Craig when he is on the stage. At that moment I was walking past and he pulled me back in and I had no idea he was going to do that.” She may have been embarrassed, but it’s certainly a happy memory, one that she won’t soon forget, and one that may never be topped. The Barrett-Jackson Auction will take place from Jan. 10-18 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Visit www.barrett-jackson.com for more details.

Who knows the best local spots, the must-see sites, and the hidden gems in the Valley better than those who recommend them all the time? Yes, we’re talking about concierges. To get the inside scoop, we reached out to some of the best in the city. Read on for their top picks.

The scoop on the local spots you need to know about

| JANUARY 2015

At Royal Palms Resort and Spa (www.royalpalmshotel.com)….

TALKING WITH: Mona Mellegard, lead concierge YEARS AS A CONCIERGE: 6 1/2 HAPPY HOUR SPOTS: Always our own Mix Up Bar first, but there are too many to just choose one. However, many of the restaurants such as Wildfish, Central Bistro, etc., have a great happy hour. STEAKHOUSES: Mastro’s City Hall, Steak 44, J&G, and Donovan’s Steakhouse, as they are close by, and a few of them also offer complimentary transportation for our guests. PLACES FOR A ROMANTIC MEAL: T. Cook’s first and foremost. However, if a guest has eaten here and wants to venture out, I suggest Elements at Sanctuary on Camelback, Lon’s at the Hermosa Inn, A Different Point of View, and many more depending on their needs and the atmosphere they are looking for. DINNER LOCALES: Oh, too many, as we have such fantastic choices today for dining in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Having been here now for over 35 years, I have seen the culinary experience grow, and take such phenomenal shape. It is a true pleasure to send guests to dining spots in our city today. MOST UNIQUE FOOD SPOTS: If guests are looking for something out of the ordinary, and what I would call “foodies,” I would send them to Crudo, FnB or Virtù, as I call these restaurants “innovative cuisine.” BEST NIGHTLIFE SPOTS: Again, this depends on the guest’s age and needs. They are always safe to go down to the Entertainment District in Scottsdale, as you can find almost everything there. PLACE TO GOLF: Being a golfer myself, I love to question the guest on what type of experience they are looking for. If they need something fast and easy, I send them to The Phoenician or to Camelback. If they have a car, and want to experience something unique, I send them to We-Ko-Pa, Quintero or to the TPC Scottsdale. MUST-SEE LOCAL PLACES: Desert Botanical Garden, Taliesin West and Pueblo Grande Museum. ONE MUST-DO THING/EXPERIENCE IN THE VALLEY: The MIM [Musical Instrument Museum], Phoenix Art Museum, or a food tour of Downtown Phoenix. (I did this a few years ago, and was blown away by the guide and the history of Phoenix). We do also have a food tour in Scottsdale which is fun. I would also not miss taking a tour, or driving to Apache Trail, to see a bit more of the surrounding area. Also Cave Creek/Carefree if you want some Western experience.

At The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa (wwww.kierlandresort.com)…

TALKING WITH: David Lange, concierge/hotel marketing team leader YEARS AS A CONCIERGE: 4 HAPPY HOUR SPOTS: Sapporo is a good start to the evening for drinks and appetizers. Right here at the Westin Kierland, guests can enjoy a cocktail on the patio along with music nightly from the bagpiper—it’s a great place to unwind and enjoy the sunset. Zipps, which has multiple locations, is also well known for their many TVs, drink specials, and cheap pizza slices. STEAKHOUSES: Dominick’s Steakhouse at Scottsdale Quarter has an upstairs seating area with a pool located in the middle, which makes for an elegant ambiance. Mastro’s Steakhouse in North Scottsdale has impeccable service and steak selections. Pinnacle Peak Patio is a more traditional steakhouse with Western roots. PLACES FOR A ROMANTIC MEAL: Elements at Sanctuary on Camelback is nestled at the base of Camelback Mountain and has spectacular views. It was my choice for Valentine’s Day two years ago. Deseo at the Westin Kierland features a Nuevo Latino menu with fresh ceviches and seafood, along with an intimate and unique atmosphere. DINNER LOCALES: El Chorro has an exquisite outdoor setting overlooking our gorgeous mountain ranges. Kai Restaurant at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort is a fine dining experience that is second to none. And, a window view at Different Point of View at Tapatio Cliffs overlooks the skyline of Downtown Phoenix. MOST UNIQUE FOOD SPOTS: Alice Cooperstown in Downtown Phoenix is a fun mix of sports and rock ’n’ roll memorabilia, but also has tasty wings. It’s the ideal spot to go before a baseball or basketball game. La Fonda Del Sol in Scottsdale is a traditional Mexican restaurant with a true Southwestern feel. BEST NIGHTLIFE SPOTS: Old Town/Downtown Scottsdale is the place to be for nightlife. A couple of the more popular spots there are The Mint and El Hefe. For a bit more tame evening, the iPic movie theater at Scottsdale Quarter is a state-of-the-art cinema that offers in-theater beverage and dining service. PLACE TO GOLF: Being an avid golfer, I have had a “Top 5 list” for a while. [My favorites are] Troon North, The Boulders, Kierland Golf Club, We-Ko-Pa, and Whirlwind Golf Club. MUST-SEE LOCAL PLACES: The Cave Creek/Carefree area is an Old West-themed location that is ideal for jewelry shopping, horseback riding, and country bars. It gives you a sense of old Arizona and reveals how much the Valley has changed. ONE MUST-DO THING/EXPERIENCE IN THE VALLEY: I think hiking in Phoenix and Scottsdale is a must.

TALKING WITH: Kimberly Hillson, guest relations/concierge YEARS AS A CONCIERGE: 15 HAPPY HOUR SPOTS: Bistro 24 at The Ritz-Carlton has “5-45,” which are five delicious bites for $5—it’s a fantastic place to unwind after work and you can’t beat the price for the quality of the food and cocktails. Also, Christopher’s Restaurant has one of the best happy hours in town—Chef Christopher Gross has a delectable array of nibbles that you can pair with 1/2-off a glass of wine from their award-winning list. STEAKHOUSES: Mastro’s City Hall Steakhouse. PLACES FOR A ROMANTIC MEAL: Sitting on the patio of Lon’s at the Hermosa Inn, taking in the view at Elements, or having a picnic at South Mountain Park & Preserve. And, Chef Mark Tarbell just celebrated 20 years with his namesake restaurant, Tarbell’s—locals can hope for 20 more years of comfort food. MOST UNIQUE FOOD SPOTS: I love to support local produce, products, and the chefs that work their magic: Kai, FnB, Posh, and the tasting menu at Binkley’s. BEST NIGHTLIFE SPOTS: For local flavor you can’t beat Handlebar J’s, or Rusty Spur [Saloon]. PLACE TO GOLF: For beautiful desert views and serious golf, We-Ko-Pa, or Dinosaur Mountain at Gold Canyon. MUST-SEE LOCAL PLACES: The world’s only global musical instrument museum, the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM). Or, take a drive to experience the history of Jerome or Bisbee. TALKING WITH: Trish Wagner, director of VIP & concierge cervices YEARS AS A CONCIERGE: 3 HAPPY HOUR SPOTS: Two at the Fairmont: Bourbon Steak: 5-9:30 p.m. (the longest happy hour) and La Hacienda! Tommy Bahama for top-notch cocktails. STEAKHOUSES: Bourbon Steak and Toro at the Fairmont. I also enjoy Eddie V’s, as well as Mastro’s Steakhouse at La Mirada Center. PLACES FOR A ROMANTIC MEAL: We have three wonderful options here on property, La Hacienda, Toro, and Bourbon Steak. Café Monarch in Old Town Scottsdale has a lovely romantic patio. DINNER LOCALES: La Hacienda, El Chorro, and T. Cook’s. A casual favorite is La Grande Orange. MOST UNIQUE FOOD SPOTS: Toro at the Fairmont. BEST NIGHTLIFE SPOTS: Depending on the taste of the guest, we suggest Top Golf, Blue Martini, or Whiskey Row. PLACE TO GOLF: The TPC [Scottsdale], which just recently redesigned and enhanced their entire Stadium course, Grayhawk, and Troon North. MUST-SEE LOCAL PLACES: Locally, the Desert Botanical Garden, Taliesin West, the Heard Museum, and the Apache Trail. A trip into Cave Creek for a taste of the Old West is fun with children. If guests have more time I strongly suggest a helicopter tour to Sedona and the Grand Canyon. ONE MUST-DO THING/EXPERIENCE IN THE VALLEY: I believe one should experience a sunrise or sunset out in the desert either in a hot air balloon, on a hike of one of our fabulous mountains, or dining on the patio of a restaurant in Cave Creek.

“WHAT WAS THE MOST UNUSUAL REQUEST YOU’VE RECEIVED AS A CONCIERGE?” “Almost every concierge will tell you they have countless unusual requests, comical adventures, and outlandish tales to tell. One of my favorites is the request I received from a guest to help him find where country singer Waylon Jennings is buried. The guest was a huge fan and wanted to pay his respects—this is when I discovered the site www.findagrave.com, and was surprised to find out he is buried in Mesa.”—Kimberly Hillson, The Ritz-Carlton, Phoenix “At a moment’s notice, I was asked by the bride, in my uniform and all, to be her matron of honor at the wedding ceremony held at our hotel gardens. Interestingly enough, the couple has returned several time to celebrate their anniversary with me.” —Julie Baxter, Arizona Biltmore “The guest wanted to know where they could purchase a Hardingfele (fiddle)?”—Trish Wagner, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess “A few years ago, I had a gentleman who wanted some very, very unusual candles (20 of them) in their room on arrival, and they cost $87 each. It took me a few days to hunt down this many. With a little help of the Special Services person at Barneys New York, we got it in time for the arrival.”—Mona Mellegard, Royal Palms Resort & Spa “We had a very high profile guest who requested to land his private 747 at the Grand Canyon!”—Susy Alpert, Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North “When the College Football BCS National Championship Game was held here a few years back, I had an Oregon fan ask for numerous front row/50 yard line tickets. Needless to say, those tickets were very expensive. I was able to secure his tickets, but being a huge fan of the sport myself, I was shocked that somebody could spend so much money with the chance of being on the losing side. Unfortunately for the guest, he was on that side.”—David Lange, The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa

Cultural Kudos

Local residents flock to Space 55 for new and innovative theatre performances. And the word is out. In fact, the theatre was just honored with a 2014 Mayor’s Arts Award for being an outstanding leader that contributes to the cultural richness of Phoenix. “Space 55 is honored to be recognized with such a remarkable award,” says Shawna Franks, Space 55’s founding producing artistic director. “Our talented ensemble has always been privileged to bring compelling and cutting-edge theatre to life. Q&A WITH SHAHE KOLLOUKIAN, OWNER OF MAZVO AUTO CAR CARE CENTER Raise your hand if this sounds familiar: a meek damsel in distress, standing over her steaming car engine on the side of the road, pacing in confusion while on her cell phone. We’ve all seen this tired old scene on TV and in movies. For decades, the world of cars has been one of the most clichéd in terms of gender stereotyping – a bastion of male competence where women are perceived as helpless, dithering drivers, ripe to be overcharged and oversold. In short, ripped off! But Shahe Kolloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Car Care Center – a full-service repair facility – has made it his mission to change this. With a clientele that is 82% female, Mazvo strives to educate its customers so that they understand the fundamentals of auto repair, while providing a personal service experience like no other. “Even if you’re not ‘into’ cars, it’s important for women to equip themselves with some basic knowledge about their vehicles,” says Shahe. We caught up with Shahe to get a few pointers and asked him an all-important question: what should we look for in an auto repair shop, and how can we get past our fear of being swindled? The most important thing you can do right from the start, he recommends, is to ask plenty of questions and expect answers. “This will let the facility know that you’re on top of what you’re about to be told,” he says. “The goal is to build a relationship built on communication and trust so that you can continue to do business with one repair facility instead of the ‘cou-

pon of the week.’” Some questions Shahe suggests: • Ask how old their equipment is • Ask if the facility is fully insured • Ask about the credentials of their technicians • Ask if their invoices itemize parts and labor for all repairs • Request a tour of the shop Additionally, says Shahe, a good auto repair shop will listen to your concerns. “If they don’t listen first, they’re basically telling you that you don’t know what you’re talking about,” he advises. “Your mechanic is like a doctor; it’s important to have a

clear line of communication. Listening is one of the most important aspects of my business.” Shahe’s tips: • Explain why you brought your vehicle in • Understand the repair shop’s hourly rate • Clarify what the diagnosis is going to cost • Make sure to go for ride with the technician so that they can see and hear what you’re concerned about, rather than assuming what they hear is what you’re talking about Shahe believes that a little automotive education goes a long way, which is why he and his staff are so committed to helping clients really understand what’s being done. “You will be amazed at how just a few pointers about the workings of your vehicle can make a huge impact on how you deal with your car repairs,” he says. Armed with the right questions to ask, you can be sure you’re making the best decisions – and not being underestimated in the process.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A CHEF?

There really never was an “ah-ha” moment. The rabbit hole journey to this point began when I realized at the age of 10, while cooking for my little brother, that Hamburger Helper could be drastically manipulated into something really tasty with the addition of fresh veggies, herbs and spices. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE CUISINE HERE?

Smart casual, American eclectic. We try to use flavors harvested globally and ingredients harvested locally. We source about 80 percent of our produce locally. YOUR FAVORITE DISH ON THE MENU IS…

Currently, it is our Roasted Beet Salad with local goat cheese, pistachios and arugula. We revamped and reintroduced the beet salad a couple of months ago, after a year absence from our menu. Our current beet salad is just a beautiful combination of the subtle sweet-earthiness of the beets, the rich and perfectly balanced acidity of Crow’s Dairy Goat Cheese, the refreshing bitter/spicy edge of arugula, and the mouthwatering drizzle of balsamic gastrique. THE ONE INGREDIENT YOU PROBABLY USE MOST IS…

Onions. I really can’t think of too many other ingredients that are so versatile (besides salt). Onions can boost the acidity or the sweetness of a dish, depending on whether or not you cook them. I suppose that is why they are one of the basic ingredients in foods from many cultures.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with David Rivera, chef/manager at Palette at Phoenix Art Museum

IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF YOU’D PROBABLY BE…

A NEW TAKE ON A CLASSIC DRINK BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

T

he Negroni ($10) at Chelsea’s Kitchen is carefully thought out and created, from its ingredients (Sipsmith gin, Cappelletti and Carpano Antica) to its hand-cut ice cube. Yes, hand-cut ice cube. “The ice is hand cut from a 300 pound block of sculpture-quality ice. The result is a less diluted, beautiful cocktail,” explains Kevin Dunn, chief mixologist and spirits director at the restaurant. Dunn created this cocktail as a take on the classic version. “The drink is a take on the classic Negroni—one of my favorite cocktails— using Cappelletti (a wine-based bitter aperitivo) instead of the classic Campari, and a relatively new London Dry Gin that really blew me away,” he explains. If you’re a fan of other spirituous cocktails, such as a martini or Old Fashioned, you’ll also be drawn to this aromatic, stirred drink. Chelsea’s Kitchen also offers a variety of other cocktails, as well as wine and beer, and is known for its fresh, Americanstyle dishes. If you head in to try this drink, while it can certainly be an aperitif, it also pairs well with rich, salty foods such as the Chips and Guacamole, Crudo, Trout Dip, or the Rotisserie Chicken, says Dunn. Chelsea’s Kitchen is open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. daily, and for brunch on Sun. from 9:30 a.m.-9 p.m. 5040 N. 40th St., Phoenix; 602.957.2555; www.chelseaskitchenaz.com.

THE ULTIMATE VACATION PLAYGROUND

From a 141-acre water park to a casino, top-notch restaurants, nightclubs, and more, Atlantis is the ultimate vacation destination BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

L

ooking for paradise? It’s right here, at Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas (www.atlantisbahamas.com). Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway where you can lay on the beach, relax at a spa, and be pampered to the point where you feel like royalty, or you’re seeking a family adventure complete with water slides, river rides, an aquarium and adventures, Atlantis offers the ultimate getaway. Here, you’ll experience luxury redefined, a place that has something for everyone, from honeymooners to families to those just seeking the ultimate getaway experience. Amidst exquisite architecture, lush

foliage, and expanses of pools, oceans and water experiences, there is no detail that hasn’t been thought of here. Want to simply relax? Grab a spot on the pristine white sand beach, or at one of the many gorgeous pools. When you’re ready for some adventure, head over to Aquaventure, the resort’s 141-acre water park. There are high-speed water slides, a mile-long river ride (with rapids!), and more—think a water slide that takes you via a tunnel through an aquarium complete with sharks, a slide with a 60-foot almost vertical drop, and so much more. If you’re traveling with young kids, they’ll enjoy the Mayan-themed children’s pool and water playground. The Dig area of the resort lets you explore the streets and tunnels that represent the lost city of Atlantis while viewing amazing marine life exhibits, from six-foot Moray Eels to venomous Indo-Pacific Ocean Lionfish. There’s also a touch tank aquarium filled with conch, starfish, sea urchins, crabs and horseshoe crabs. Always dreamed of interacting with dolphins or sea lions? You can do that, too, at the resort’s Dolphin Cay, a 14-acre marine habitat and dolphin rescue-rehabilitation facility. Other water activities include snorkeling, scuba, snuba, walking on the bottom of the Shark Exhibit (with special protective gear, of course!), and UPTOWN |

interacting with stingrays. For those whose interests lie beyond the water, there is a spa, Tom Weiskopf-designed championship golf course, a pottery studio, rock climbing, tennis, a movie theatre, and a library. For foodies in search of top-notch cuisine, there are 21 restaurants, including Chef Bobby Flay’s award-winning Mesa Grill, and 19 bars and lounges. For nightlife, break out your dancing shoes and head to Aura Nightclub, a 9,000-square-foot Jeffrey Beers-designed nightclub or Dragon’s, Atlantis’s ultra-lounge. The accommodations, too, encompass all needs. There are six locations to choose from, and they range from a relaxed tropical ambience to sheer luxury. For those who want the ultimate best, the Bridge Suite at the Royal Towers sits 16 stories high (it bridges the two Royal Towers), is 4,740 square feet, has 10 rooms, boasts a 22-karat gold chandelier, and has a permanent staff of seven. Truly, this is a destination for everyone.

LIVING ART

These custom miniature indoor watergardens offer a unique accent to your space BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

JANUARY 2015 |

magine a miniature landscape, complete with cliffs, waterfalls, streams, plants, and more, right in your living room. Or your dining room. Or your office. Or any other indoor space. “I love mixing up art and science!” explains Robert Dekker, who co-owns Plantaria—a company that creates miniature indoor watergardens—with his son, Stephen. “Creating a product that allows my clients to garden 365 days a year has been very rewarding for me. Additionally, the miniature scale of this garden allows people to continue gardening long after they are no longer able to physically handle gardening outdoors.” The Dekkers founded Planteria as a way to bring the beauty of nature indoors on a miniature scale. “My educational background is in botany and forestry,” Robert explains. “My last 30 years have been spent building water gardens in the landscape setting. I also enjoy woodworking. All of these disciplines coalesced and condensed into the concept of an indoor miniaturized landscape. The landscape has to be in scale, has to be housed in an aesthetically pleasing compartment, and has to be as self-sufficient as possible. Timer-controlled irrigation, lighting, and water features all were part of the challenge.” The gardens the Dekkers create are 365-day-a-year indoor gardens that are illuminated by LED/fluorescent lighting. They are six feet horizontal, with a two-foot depth. The actual “window” dimension is six feet by 20 inches. Typically, they take one to two months to build, with careful consideration taken to group trees of the same species, add naturalized rock formations and water features, and more. The garden requires watering and care similar to an outdoor garden—and offers just as much, if not more, beauty. The gardens begin at $30,000. For more information, visit www.plantaria.net.

O

ver the past decade, Arizona winemaking has transformed into a respected, multi-million dollar industry. Reports of the White House sipping on Arizona wines, coupled with news that multiple James Beard House Dinners have featured local brands, only amplify–and expedite–its popularity nationwide. So, as Arizona winemakers work toward planting as many as 1,300 acres over the next year, it begs the question: Which local wines are the hottest? We take a look at some of the higher-end wines now available.

border of France and Italy, this varietal is so coveted that the winery limits customers to just three bottles each. This wine was the first where the winemaker used submerged cap fermentation on a few of the components– and was a success on so many levels that the 2013 and 2014 releases will be wholly developed using the process. $65/bottle. Blend: Mainly Sangiovese with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and just a dash of Barbera.

Callaghan Vineyard–Caitlin’s 2009

Aged nearly two years in 100% new French and Polish oak, this powerful wine offers an earthy texture and spicy black fruit. Though some note it will reach its full potential in about five years, it is already a crown jewel of Callaghan’s award-winning bottles. $50/ bottle. Blend: 60% Petit Verdot, 40% Merlot, and both Cabernets.

Pillsbury Wine Company—2012 Guns & Kisses

This intense co-ferment from Sam Pillsbury’s Estate high-altitude grown vines is its finest ever. The winemaker hung the fruit four weeks longer than usual, hand-harvested and fermented it with native yeasts, then aged it 12 months in neutral oak. The result? Explosive intensity. $55/bottle. Blend: 94.5% Shiraz, 2.5% Symphony, 3% Grenache.

Alcantar –2012 Confluence

The flavor is as deep and rich as the color–not to mention well balanced to even the most discerning palates. $40/bottle. Blend: 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot.

Page Springs Cellars–2012 ECIPS

With this special blend, the brain trust at Page Springs began by setting aside the spiciest Arizona-grown wines from each of the batches in the cellar and setting out to create a blend made famous in Southern France. And its odd name? An acronym given by wine club members, short for “Enjoy ’Cause It’s Practically Sex.” Enough said. $32/bottle. Blend: 28% Syrah, 27% Mourvedre, 22% Grenache, 9% Petite Sirah, 7% Counoise, 7% Tannat.

Javalina Leap–2012 Legacy Zinfandel

Old World-style wine from seven-year-old vines. The taste is fruit-forward and jammy, and clearly meant to be paired with meats, with hints of chocolate and a touch of pepper left on the tongue. $55/bottle. Blend: No blend here—100% estate Zinfandel grapes.

And he might be onto something–this was among the wines honored by the Arizona Republic and Arizona Wine Growers Association as a “Wine of Distinction.” $40/bottle. Blend: 100% Petite Syrah aged in American oak.

Arizona Stronghold–2010 Lozen

An award-winning wine a dozen times over that almost wasn’t. In 2010, the winery suffered both frost and heat damage, which ripened the grapes ahead of schedule. The result was a lower alcohol level, but an exponentially darker, richer final product. $40/bottle. Blend: 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 14% Malbec

With the wild popularity of Beckett’s Table, it was pretty much a no-brainer that his newest concept would be an out-of-the-box hit, as well. the company, “When you drink Juby True, you’ll get a healthy dose of fruits and vegetables, made from the best possible ingredients.” The location is also more than it appears. Mackenzie, like many other women, had always stressed concern about her breasts. “I didn’t feel like my breasts had fully developed to fit the frame of my body. I wanted a feminine look without looking over done.” Berardi Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery has had the pleasure of working with Mackenzie to fulfill that need with Breast Augmentation. “I couldn’t have selected a better surgeon.
