MICHAEL FITZMAURICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board Certified Hand Surgeon
Between regularly sending emails and text messages on your smart phone, spending hours gripping the steering wheel in rush hour traffic, and playing hours of tennis on the weekends, your hands are locked in an endless cycle of repetitive motions that typically go unnoticed until pain sets in. Soreness at the base of the thumb, pain, or a clicking, snapping, or locking sensation while the thumb is in motion could be a sign of trigger thumb. Trigger thumb can result from tendon inflammation due to repetitive gripping motions, or from an underlying medical condition like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice has pioneered a minimally invasive procedure to treat trigger thumb in Arizona without the need for complicated and invasive traditional surgery. The EndoTech® Endoscopic Trigger Thumb Release system was designed by Dr. Fitzmaurice and is available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute. EndoTech® uses a small incision and an endoscopic technique to fix the injured tendon in an outpatient procedure. With EndoTech® , you’ll be back in motion, firm grip in tact, in no time!
W
ow, there is so much energy in the city! I think everyone is still excited from ringing in the new year, ready to see what 2017 will bring – I know I am! Speaking of new year, we went with a bit of a “new year, new you” type theme this month, with some of our sections taking healthy or revitalization spins. Allure (page 62) and Places (page 64) are both following suit, featuring renewing and rejuvenating products for your skin, and spa getaways to relax and refresh, respectively. We also rounded up some good-for-you cocktails on page 78, spotlighting libations that are made with healthy ingredients such as vitamin C, aloe, lavender honey, goji berries and more. We’ve also rounded up two new amazing spots to check out – a restaurant by Genuine Concepts in the Sunnyslope area that is serving up Mexican cuisine, and an awesome venue that is changing the way musicians preform. Another reason the city feels a bit busier and lively is due to the huge events we have coming up. Between the Waste Management Phoenix Open (check out all you need to know about the must-see concerts at the Coors Light Birds Nest on page 46) and the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction, the Valley is packed and ready to party. We got the BTS scoop on Barrett-Jackson from General Manager (and event extraordinaire) Nick Cardinale on page 30. We’re not only talking to him about how he got where he is today (Spoiler alert: let’s just say he owes it all to LinkedIn and perfect timing), but he also told us all about the Barrett-Jackson VIP Experience and how he’s growing Barrett-Jackson’s brand to be even larger than it is today. We also spoke with six concierges at the Valley’s most-visited hotels and resorts (page 51). They’re sharing funny memories, what they love about Arizona, and all the best places to go – whether you’re looking for a date nigh spot, exciting tour, happy hour hang out, or just want to try something new. Between all of the exciting events happening in the Valley and the beautiful weather we have, I have a feeling this year will be a good one! H AND SURGEON MICH AEL FITZMAUR ICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board CertiďŹ ed Hand Surgeon
Dr. Fitzmaurice has performed thousands of minimally-invasive, endoscopic hand procedures in Arizona over the last decade.
You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb.
Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons. Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!
De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System.

DRUMMING UP PEACE How Ken Koshio found his rhythm BY MIACHELLE DEPIANO SHOT ON LOCATION AT THE JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN OF PHOENIX
As a young boy in Nagoya, Japan, taiko drummer and folk rock musician Ken Koshio dreamed of being a Japanese folk rock singer, and began to play acoustic guitar at the age of 12. With Simon & Garfunkel as his musical inspiration, he learned to play ‘60s and ‘70s rock ‘n’ roll. It wasn’t until he came to the United States years later and had two life-changing experiences that he found the key to his creative happiness. continued… JANUARY 2017 |

up close Koshio began performing in Japan when he was 20 years old, playing at clubs, performing as a street singer, and writing his own music, struggling to catch his big break. On the verge of quitting, he decided to take a trip to the U.S. in 1995 for three months to see if he could find his musical muse. “I needed to see my [musical] roots,” Koshio explains. “That’s why I came here before I quit.” Despite his limited Enlgish, he traveled from Los Angeles to New Orleans, making four stops across the coast on a Greyhound bus as a throwback to Simon & Garfunkel’s music. “I saw a lot of talented performers who are unknown,” Koshio says. “I wondered if I could see something real. I felt I was a fake.” It was in New Orleans that Koshio had the first of the two important musical experiences in his life. He was at the French Quarter and came upon an elderly man sitting in an old chair playing the blues. “No one was listening [to him],” Koshio says. “I felt the atmosphere. I started crying – the blues, his music, his existence in that whole scene gave me the chance to see the real blues. When I see myself as a performer, am I like him or not?” In 1998, Koshio returned to LA to live and pursue his musical dreams. When 9/11 occurred, Koshio was inspired to use his music to connect with people and promote peace. He created the Thousand Crane tour in which he toured the U.S. on Route 66, starting in Santa Monica, California and finishing at ground zero in New York City. Along the trip, people folded origami cranes, and eventually all 10,000 cranes were hung at ground zero. “I wanted to contribute something to the people who were affected by 9/11,” Koshio explains. “I started on August 6, 2002, which was the anniversary of [the nuclear bomb on] Hiroshima.” On his tour, Koshio traveled through Sedona and the Hopi reservation, and this stop became the foundation for his eventual move to Phoenix in 2004. The natural views, the social and artistic cultures, and chance encounters all culminated into an
epiphany that Arizona was meant to be Koshio’s home where he could evolve musically and spiritually. While in Sedona, he met a member of taiko group Fushicho Daiko led by Esther Vandecar in Phoenix. They invited Koshio to come collaborate musically and in 2003, Koshio visited Vandercar’s dojo, where his second major musical and spiritual experience occurred. That musical collaboration showed Koshio how his Japanese roots and his love for American folk rock could be fused together. “Rock ‘n’ roll is my muscle, my meat, my bone,” Koshio explains. “But the blood, the DNA, I did not have yet. When I played the taiko, it was in me. I found my soul.” The Thousand Cranes tour was the first project in Koshio’s passion to educate people on the effects of war, create connection between differing cultures, and promote peace, but he didn’t want to just stop there. Influenced by a book he read in second grade, Barefoot Gen by Hiroshima survivor Keiji Nakazawa, Koshio organized a traveling poster and performance-oriented exhibition called

Hiroshima Calling, which was featured on PBS’s Arizona Horizon. Currently, Koshio teaches taiko drumming in his downtown Phoenix dojo and carries on thousand-year-old Hiroshima taiko music by Hiroshima survivor and taiko master Itsuki Munakata. Koshio presented his Taiko ‘N’ Roll show in 2015 and 2016, held at the Tempe Center for the Arts. He performs and participates in community outreach at Ro Ho En, the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix, with performances such as Roots of the Cherry Tree/Sakura No Ne. “My performances are not only a way to collaborate with other artists, but to communicate deeply with all people. With its serene environment and diverse patrons, the Japanese Friendship Garden is the perfect place to hold these performances,” Koshio says. In May, he will present The Taiko Extravaganza-Salt of the Earth at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and has plans to put on a concert at the Grand Canyon in 2018. GETTING IN HER JABZ
An Arcadia mom takes on the boxing biz BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
J
osette Rosene is a knockout – literally. In December 2016, Rosene opened Jabz Boxing Fitness for Women in Arcadia – thanks to a Groupon. “I worked in sales for 20 years, most of them as a single mother of three,” says Rosene, noting her position caused her to travel weekly. “When I married my husband in 2008, my kids where still young, so I jumped at the chance to become a full-time mom.” And while she never gave up working out, as she got older, keeping weight off got really hard. “I came across a Groupon in 2012 to try Jabz in Scottsdale and signed up. Within 10 minutes, I was hooked,” Rosene explains. “I lost 30 pounds on my fivefoot-four frame in just months and transformed my entire body.” Impressed, the Scottsdale owners asked Rosene to become a certified trainer for the gym just six months into her membership. After holding the position for three years, an opportunity for Rosene to open her own gym presented itself – and she jumped at it, opening a franchise in her hometown of Arcadia just last month.
Etc.
Congrats on the first month in business! What has been the most challenging part of business ownership? The build-out of the space – We retro-fitted a building on 32nd Street and Indian School. But, it is gorgeous now! How does Jabz work? Punch a bag for an hour? Not at all – our 45-minute workouts, which change daily, combine boxing exercises with cardio, strength training and even plyometrics. Sure we PUNCH and KICK a lot, but we also use full body exercises and mix in cardio to help you get into shape, fast.

PRODUCTION POWERHOUSE Daniel Davisson lights up the entertainment industry BY KELLY POTTS PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
D
aniel Davisson is a man of many talents. He is the founder of event production company Davisson Entertainment, and has his hands in a variety of Valley performing arts companies, designing dance and theater productions, as well as corporate events. As if that doesn’t keep him busy enough, he is also the resident lighting designer, master electrician and director of production for rentals and events at Phoenix Theatre, as well as the production stage manager and lighting designer for Scorpius Dance Theatre and CONDER/Dance, among others. “It started when I was younger, working at my Aunt’s theater company,” Davisson says. “There’s something about manipulating the lights to show the audience only what you want them to see, that is all I need.” Last year, Davisson’s entertainment company put on the first ever Vegan Food Festival in central Phoenix. The event was so successful; it will be back for a second year this February. “I enjoy having these events – no matter if it’s a big food festival, or an event with local artists, because it helps showcase all Phoenix has to offer.”
Etc.
What social media outlet could you not live without? I could live without all of them! But, I do enjoy Facebook as a marketing tool for my business. I don’t really use social media for myself much. What is your favorite way to unwind? I’m not sure what that is yet … I hate to sound cliche, but I am always working. I suppose if I’m trying to recharge, I take my dogs for a long hike or head to Sedona. What was a life-changing theater moment for you? Seeing Phantom of the Opera in New York City. They had 16 or so candelabras come up out of the floor, a smoke show and a bridge appear on stage – no acting, all lighting and production. That’s when I knew that’s what I wanted to do. UPTOWN |

risha Anthony had a fashion inspiration at a very young age – her grandmother. Mesmerized by her grandmother’s great sense of style and sparkling jewelry, she knew she wanted to dress just like her one day. A little girl dreaming of fashion and the future. “I inherited some beautiful jewelry from my mother and I wear it every day,” Anthony says. “Over the years, I have added to my collection of delicate silver bracelets, which I also wear daily, and each one has a special meaning to me.” The public relations executive also holds something else close to her heart: giving back to Valley organizations. Anthony serves as a member of the board of directors for the Public Relations Society of America, Volunteer Center of Maricopa County, Phoenix Friends of the Arizona Cancer Center, the Phoenix Heart Ball, the Phoenix Women’s Board of the Steele Children’s Research Center and she is a member of the Arizona Cactus Pine Girl Scout Alumni Board. You’ll likely spot Anthony at the month’s largest philanthropy event, sporting her sparkles while supporting causes near and dear to her heart. “My heart has always been in the nonprofit sector and as a young mom, I found that PR was my passion. I continue to try and give back every day in both my professional and personal life,” she explains.
What is the hottest trend for this season? I love the look of a long flowing, colorful delicate jacket, over black pants and a black long-sleeved blouse. I also love a poncho with a great pattern. Name three of your favorite accessories: I have a beautiful black beaded shawl I have worn for years; I also love my silver choker necklace; and great black high heel suede pumps. Do you have a favorite place to shop? I love to shop in vintage stores but for lacy dresses and tops, I can always find something fun at Free People or Johnny Was. I love Ralph Lauren – I can take his style from the office to dinner, always knowing I will be on trend.

hen your real estate team coins itself “The Suits,” you better be ready to dress the part. No one understands that better than the firm’s founding partner, Tucker Blalock. A big believer in you have to "look good to feel good," he leads a firm of well-coifed brokers that have taken the Phoenix real estate market by storm – while looking sleek. “My mantra is dress for the reason, not for the season. I'm ‘on’ most of the time so whether it’s a Sunday morning or Friday evening, my look needs to be ready to do business,” he explains. Whatever the reason (or the season), Blalock gravitates towards classic and tailored pieces, a nod to his military days as a former marine. Although he runs a tight ship when it comes to fit, Blalock knows when it’s time to add some pizzazz to his ensemble. “I like to be refined and understated, but flashy in the details,” he says. “I'm always in solid shirts with easy colors like whites and blues. I never wear eccentric colors, flashy pocket squares, or cufflinks, but I will always flash a nice watch.”

There is a lot of behind the scene work leading up to The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auction. Just ask Nick Cardinale, Barrett-Jackson’s executive president and general manager, who oversees the company’s day-to-day operations. “Putting on an event like Barrett-Jackson is no easy task, and it would not be possible without the right team in place. We start building our Scottsdale auction site at WestWorld [of Scottsdale] during Thanksgiving week, and it will take us until mid-February to break it all down,” Cardinale explains. “It is a huge undertaking, but I love every minute of it.” Cardinale has been a part of the Barrett-Jackson team since December 2013. Prior to his Barrett-Jackson days, Cardinale

held executive positions in the professional sports and live entertainment industry. He was the director of sports operations for Arizona’s Grand Canyon State Games for a year before becoming the assistant manager of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. Harlem Globetrotters International, Inc. is the most recognized sports and entertainment franchise in the world. Since its 1927 inception, the team has played more than 26,000 exhibition games in 122 countries and territories worldwide. After just two years as the assistant manager, Cardinale was promoted to general manager. At just 25 years old, he was the youngest GM in the company’s 91-year history. “It is what I consider my first really big corporate job, which
| JANUARY 2017
happened to be on a rather large and well-known stage. When I was promoted to GM, although I was young, I had already been with the company for two years, so I was ready for the challenge and eager to step into the new position,” he reminisces. During his ten years with the Globetrotters, Cardinale helped the franchise record its 10 most financially successful years. He then moved from Globetrotters to Barrett-Jackson. “I wasn’t looking for a new job at the time, but randomly saw the Barrett-Jackson GM position posted on LinkedIn. I looked over the job description and it seemed to be almost an exact match to my background,” he explains. “I sent my resume over to throw my name in the hat.” Cardinale’s extensive background in professional sports and event-based entertainment made him the victor over his competitors. In the past, the company had hired someone with just an automotive background. Although Cardinale has a personal passion for collector cars, it was his rich experience that earned him the job. “When my resume came in, I just so happened to be exactly what they were looking for, and they also felt it was a perfect match!” As the GM of Barrett-Jackson, Cardinale will tell you that he helps oversee everything but cars. “This usually confuses people as most just see us as a car auction company. But the reality of it is that Barrett-Jackson already has the best car experts in the business, and didn’t need any help with that,” he adds. “BarrettJackson is much more than a car auction. We have grown into a world-class ‘bucket list’ event and lifestyle brand – that is where I come in.” Cardinale does it all, from helping to manage Barrett-Jackson’s team and employees to elevating the company’s initiatives. He helps CEO and Chairman Craig Jackson oversee day-to-day operations of the business and events, and also works closely with Brand Manager, Carolyn Jackson, to continue to expand the internationally recognized lifestyle brand. “In addition to being a car auction and a lifestyle brand, we are also a media company. We want to make sure that we stay connected and find ways to engage our fan base year round,” he says. By communicating to their demographics of consumers on various mediums, Cardinale helps the company stay on the forefront of change. “Barrett-Jackson has always been a leader of change in the industry, such as the first on television, first with a web presence and multiple social media platforms, and first offering live streaming. Our goal is to continue this trajectory by adapting to the ways people interact with their favorite brands,” he expands.
Cardinale has also taken the reins of Barrett-Jackson’s VIP Experience program. The program brings car collector fans closer to Barrett-Jackson by offering unique ticket packages that feature exciting perks, including a VIP auction tour and auction block tour, hospitality skybox and staging lane tent access, private and hosted bar areas, VIP restroom areas, reserved VIP floor seating, Opening Night Gala invitations and more. Since taking over the VIP Experience program, Cardinale has added Barrett-Jackson to QuintEvent’s premier “Bucket List” events. QuintEvent handles VIP Experience programs for big names like the Super Bowl, Formula One racing, Kentucky Derby, and now BarrettJackson. “It has been an incredible partnership [with QuintEvents], and we are now going into our third year of the program,” he says. In order to keep up with Barrett-Jackson’s moving parts, the GM has to be a jack-ofall-trades and master of all. That person is Nick Cardinale. Cardinale jokingly admits that Dutch Bros. Coffee helps keeps him moving and motivated. On a more serious note, he is driven by challenge. “In the event business, nothing is ever perfect,” he says. “To be successful, you need to do your job well in the setup and planning leading up to the event. It is hard work. But when an event is all said and done, nothing is more gratifying than to look back on what you helped accomplish.” With years of experience under his belt, Cardinale has become an event preparation extraordinaire. Because of this, he continues to preserve Barrett-Jackson’s reputation as one of the best lifestyle events around. “My goal is to make sure every event is set up in such a way that our fans and customers have the best experience possible and leave not only wanting to come back, but want to tell their friends and family they need to come, too,” he explains. Cardinale’s tenacity and passion for success can be seen in his contributions to two well-known organizations with incredible reputations both in and out of their respective industries. And while he wasn’t in search of a job when casually logging into LinkedIn that one day just three over years ago, the job was in search of him. “Working for an incredible company like Barrett-Jackson really puts it into perspective, as you not only hear from those around you how incredible the event might be, but you also get to see your accomplishments talked about online, on TV, in newspapers, in magazines, and so forth,” he adds. “People are always fascinated about what I do, but are usually blown away when I get into the details of what all we do, which is really fun.” For more information about Nick Cardinale or the upcoming Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, visit www.barrett-jackson.com.
“Putting on an event like Barrett-Jackson is no easy task, and it would not be possible without the right team in place. We start building our Scottsdale auction site at WestWorld during Thanksgiving week, and it will take us until mid-February to break it all down,” Cardinale explains. “It is a huge undertaking, but I love every minute of it.”

LADERA TAVERNA Y COCINA
Sunnyslope’s newest spot PHOTOS BY BRIAN CLAY
L
ate last month, Genuine Concepts – the team who brought you Phoenix staples like The Vig, The Womack, Linger Longer Lounge, Little Woody and more – introduced Ladera Taverna y Cocina to the Sunnyslope area of the Valley. Headed by Executive Chef Jorge Gomez, Ladera brings unique, authentic Mexican cuisine to Phoenix with a lively atmosphere and a dining experience unlike others on this side of town.
The space The building that houses Ladera is inspired by a mission-style hacienda, with an intricate, cast iron entrance. Diners will immediately sense the intimate
atmosphere, featuring a rich, yet neutral color palette. The design is cohesive thought out as hints of the style adorn the restaurant, such as artistically designed talavera tiles at the bar and rustic chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. The cozy and comfortable ambiance continues with dimly lit candles on tables, while a warm fireplace burns from the spacious patio.
The Neighborhood When deciding on a final designation for Ladera, Genuine Concepts Restaurant group partners Tucker Woodbury and Jim Riley decided on the quirky area of Sunnyslope because of its rich history, diverse culture and longevity of the natives who reside on the North Central side of Phoenix. Sunnyslope is one of Phoenix’s most booming areas today that continues to develop its own unique flavor.
The Food Ladera used inspiration from all over the regional empire of Mexico to create its menu of inspiring and eclectic dishes. The menu, curated by Hermosillo, Sonora, Meixco native Chef Gomez, features dishes like chiles rellenos, crispy red snapper, barbacoa and pollo asado o UPTOWN |

As in My Girl, Ain’t to Proud to Beg, and The Way You Do The Things You Do, among about a dozen other hit songs. On Saturday, January 14, the Grammy winning super group will join together with recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Peter Cetera as well as The London Essentials and the Montreal Rhapsody Orchestra to put on the performance of a lifetime at Childhelp’s 13th Annual Drive the Dream Gala. “Beyond the A-list entertainment, we are aiming to take our guests on a ‘Journey to Oz’ throughout the event, from our multi-course dinner menu to our eye popping decor and event design. We are quite literally transforming Arizona’s beloved Biltmore Resort into the Land of Oz for this one special night,” explains Sara O’Meara, Childhelp co-founder, CEO and chair. The star-studded event, which is cochaired by Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson and Mr. Richard J. Stephenson, is expected to raise $1 million for Childhelp. With headquarters right here in the Valley, Childhelp has brought the light of hope and healing into the lives of countless children as a leading national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping at-risk children. The story of Childhelp, which has earned renewed attention in recent years thanks to a best-selling book and Lifetime television movie about the founders, spans more than 50 years and begins with two young actresses – Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson – who were traveling abroad and came across 11 homeless orphans in the street. “We took every one of those sweet children to our hotel, where we bathed and fed them,” O’Meara recalls. “We stayed with those children – against the wishes of our business teams and travel planners, until we found homes and care for each one.” UPTOWN |

And just like that, what would become the world’s largest organization dedicated to helping meet the physical, emotional and educational needs of abused, neglected and at-risk kids was born. With the help of Childhelp advocate and friend the late Nancy Reagan – and more recently Senator Jon Kyl and wife Caryll Kyl, who will be honored during the event this year – the organization has succeeded in touching lives on nearly every continent. “Like the Scarecrow’s journey, Lion’s quest and Tin Man’s search, we will be honoring the mind, courage and heart of a recovering child at this year’s gala in addition to recognizing local leaders who have been long-time supporters of our cause, including Senator and Mrs. Kyl,” O’Meara says.

This elegant evening includes unexpected music, fine dining and tons of fun. “Barrow physicians are talented far beyond the operating room, in past years they have provided musical entertainment,” says Carolyn O’Malley, co-chair of the ball. “And the chef at the Arizona Biltmore always outdoes the previous year’s menu, but of course – it’s a secret!” And although this event is one that happens each year, don’t expect to predict every event of the night. “This event is full of tradition, but we always throw in a few surprises!” Lewis exclaims. One thing that won’t be a surprise is that the ball is celebrating the research funds raised for Barrow Neurological Institute. “Proceeds from the ball benefit Barrow Neurological Institute. Donors at the $25,000 level and higher may direct their gift to their area of interest at Barrow,” O’Malley elaborates.
If You Go...

The Barrow Women’s Board also highlights a special project annually. This year the Women’s Board has chosen Stroke Research for its Barrow Women’s Board Special Project. “Anyone contributing to the Barrow Women’s Board Special Project will directly support the research of Dr. Michael Waters, director of the Neurovascular Division and Stroke Program at Barrow,” Lewis explains. “Funds not restricted to a donor’s particular area of interest or directed to the Barrow Women’s Board Special Project support research efforts at Barrow.” The entire evening will also be a celebration of Barrow Neurological Institute’s President and CEO, Robert F. Spetzler as he heads into retirement this June after 34 years of service. JANUARY 2017 |

FLOCK TO THE BIRDS NEST The Phoenix Open’s music mecca packs the punch of a four-night party BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
E
ach year for four days, there is one party to rule them all in Scottsdale – in a tent and on a golf course. It’s the Coors Light Birds Nest, the entertainment hot spot at the Waste Management Phoenix Open that draws both golf enthusiasts and music lovers, whether you’re a country fan or a rock ‘n’ roll soul “In 2016, we had a headline act every night – how do you top that?” says Dillan Micus, Coors Light Birds Nest chairman. “How about with two headliners each night, transforming this into a real music festival in addition to the biggest party of the year?”
February 1 Night one is a big one for country fans, with Jake Owen and Chase Rice set to headline. A repeat performer at the Coors Light Birds Nest (2014), Owen achieved his first No. 1 hit on the country charts with Barefoot Blue Jean Night and was awarded the 2012 American Country Awards Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Rice cowrote Florida Georgia Line’s Cruise, which topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs, and has since had several other hits. February 2 The country crooners continue with Toby Keith and The Band Perry. Keith has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and was named the Billboard Country Music Artist of the Decade in 2009. He’s had 61 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs list, including 21 No. 1 singles. The Band Perry, comprised of siblings Kimberly, Reid and Neil Perry, released their self-titled debut album with the hit song If I Die Young in 2009, which reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs. February 3 Country will take a backseat Friday, with rapper Flo Rida and electro-legends Kaskade taking the stage. Flo Rida has sold more than 80 million digital downloads to date, making him one of the best-selling artists in the digital age. His catalog includes megahits Whistle and My House. Kaskade has sold more than 30 million albums and nearly 15 million digital downloads since hitting the scene in the mid-2000s. They are best known for their hit singles Every Time We Touch and Evacuate the Dance Floor. February 4 The grand finale night will both rock and roll, thanks to Blink 182 and Steve Aoki. Among the most successful punk bands of all time, Blink 182 has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide and created several anthems from the early-2000s musical era, including All the Small Things and What’s My Age Again. Electro-house musician and famed music producer Steve Aoki is currently the highest grossing dance musician in North America and best known for his famed collaborations with will.i.am, LMFAO, Iggy Azalea and Lil Jon. The Coors Light Birds Nest, which is 21 and over, is open daily from 3:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Headline acts will take the main stage nightly at approximately 8 p.m. General admission tickets start at $50 and VIP tickets start at $200. www.coorslightbirdsnest.com.

O
ver the past year, Dr Erik Svans and Dr Steven Chang have treated 100’s of teeth with a revolutionary procedure to correct Gingival Recession away from a procedure called Pinhole Surgical Technique™ or PST™. The results have been very impressive, without the need for suturing and cutting donor tissue from your palate, which was required for Traditional Gingival Grafting. Focusing on solving the original cause of the recession first (overzealous brushing, history of periodontal disease, bruxism), and treating the affected sites with PST™ second, Dr Svans and Dr Chang have been able to provide an alternative to Gingival Recession
Correction predictably and reliably with minimal pain—the number one reason why patients and dentists dislike the Traditional approach. Pinhole Surgical Technique was designed to help those who suffer from Gingival Recession procedure that is considered the most painful procedure in Dentistry. Dr. Svans and Dr. Chang were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. During your Complimentary Consult, they can educate you on this amazing procedure and how they can help correct your receding gums without sutures and with mild post operative pain.

THE CHERRY ON TOP
Tom’s Tavern & 1929 Grill’s unique take on an Old Fashioned BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
Y
ou might know Tom’s Tavern & 1929 Grill as burger spot that is strictly open for lunch, but that’s all about to change. After 87 years, the restaurant is now open (for the first time) for dinner and drinks with a new menu that respects the classics while adding a contemporary twist, redefining the meaning of “tavern.” And what’s respecting the classics if you don’t serve an Old Fashioned? “The Woodford Bourbon Old Fashioned, an everlasting American cocktail with history, pairs with the timeless decor and quintessential American dishes (at Tom’s Tavern),” says Jim Gallen, owner and chef of Tom’s Tavern. The drink ($14) is everything would expect – and more, with a hint of orange, Peychaud Bitters and sugar in the raw. But, there’s a twist. The restaurant actually imports Luxardo Maraschino cherries from a distillery in Luxardo, Italy that was founded in 1821. “The delicious drink is a grown-up cherry treat,” Gallen explains. “The bourbon brings a clean, rich and warm taste that is complemented with a fruit finish from the luxe Luxardo cherry.” Tom’s Tavern is still open for lunch and now open for dinner Monday through Thursday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. 2 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; 602.257.1688; www.tomstavernaz.com. JANUARY 2017 |

he Audi A3 sedan arrived on the U.S. automotive scene a couple of years ago as the entry-level vehicle for the brand. Since then, Audi has launched Audi 3 versions in convertible, plug-in hybrid Sportback e-tron, and the highperformance S3 sedan tested here. Think of it as a smaller version of the popular Audi A4. For 2017, the S3 lineup got a mild appearance update: an all-new front fascia with a high-gloss grille, new Xenon headlamps, new LED taillights with sequential turn signals, and new technology and safety features. The S3 shares its performance engine – a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter, 292-horsepower four-cylinder – with its parent company’s excellent JANUARY 2017 |

Volkswagen Golf R. The engine is paired with a six-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission with quattro allwheel-drive. S3 models also have larger wheels and brakes and quicker steering than the standard A3. There’s also the optional electromagnetic adaptive suspension and available 19-inch wheels with performance tires. Inside, the build quality is impressive but the materials are a mixed bag. Quilt-pattern sports seats are excellent, but they are on the firm side and operate manually for adjusting. Overall, the interior seems less Audi and more Volkswagen. There’s a newly available Audi virtual cockpit with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster to display sharp Google Maps images. The updated infotainment system includes smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Driving performance, of course, is the reason one would choose the S3 over a standard A3 sedan. While not in the same class as the upcoming 400-horsepower RS3 (set to make its U.S. debut in 2018), performance is nonetheless impressive. Zero to 60 mph is reached in just 4.7 seconds. The automatic transmission shifts quickly through the gears, up or down. Paddle shifters on the steering wheel allow for manual shifting. The driver can also toggle through the Audi drive select feature, with performance and handling settings for comfort, dynamic, automatic or individual. Choosing the dynamic setting, the powertrain increases the vehicle’s performance, with sharper steering and amplified engine acoustics. Other settings tamp down the performance, acoustics and handling. But know that the S3, even in comfort, delivers a ride that may be too firm for some. The S3 certainly won’t disappoint. But if you want to save some money, you could get a similarly equipped, but more powerful, Ford Focus RS or the nearly identical Volkswagen Golf R with a manual transmission.

It might not be surprising to hear that CRUjiente Tacos has a variety of tacos on its menu – after all, the taco spot surely lives up to its namesake. But what might come as a pleasant surprise is the Korean Fried Chicken Street Taco ($4 regularly or $3 during happy hour), created by CRUjiente Tacos Co-founder and Executive Chef Richard Hinojosa. The taco, which won first place in the chicken taco category at last year’s Arizona Taco Festival, combines Korean elements such as a hot pepper gochujang sauce, pickled jalapeno and compressed cabbage, with traditional touches to make a perfectly balanced dish. The result is, to quote Chef Hinojosa, “a shotgun blast of savory-ness that hits your palate all at once.” 3961 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.687.7777; www.crutacos.com. JANUARY 2017 |

ong before culinary buzzwords like chef-driven, locally sourced and farm to table existed, there was this one: tableside preparation. And though this staple of the mid-20th-century in fine dining was once all the rage, over the past 25 years restaurants offering this “dinner and a show” concept of preparing one or more special menu items at tables had gone by the wayside. That is, until now. Several local restaurants are bringing this tradition back – and here are seven of our favorites.
MATCH Cuisine & Cocktails at FOUND:RE Phoenix Dish: Let’s Do It on the Table, $10 About: This cleverly named dessert is all about messy fun. To start, your server rolls out 20 feet of food-grade clear acetate across the table. Then, with that in place, the server proceeds to dish out whipped cheesecake, seasonal crust crumbles, olive oil powder and homemade ice cream then tops it with nibs of white chocolate, meringue and fresh flowers right on the table. The result – a family style dessert with flair. Info: 1100 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; 602.875.8000; www.foundrehotels.com.

THE LISTENING ROOM PHOENIX Setting a new standard for local and independent music in the Valley PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE LISTENING ROOM PHOENIX
W
hen Listening Room Phoenix owners Jim Colletti and Adam Smith experienced the undesirable conditions artists faced when performing, they decided to set out on their own and create a space that caters directly to live musicians. Colletti was traveling with husband Smith, a singer-songwriter, when this epiphany came to him – after countless situations and environments affected Smith’s performances. “Although we were fortunate to have many incredible experiences [on the road], most included conditions that were less than desirable,” Colletti explains. “Whether it was the condition of the performance space, lack of quality sound equipment, the behavior of the staff or audience, or the distracting noises from the room (typically a restaurant, bar, coffee house), the experience for Adam (the performer) could have been a lot better.” Another thing the pair found was that they could never capture adequate quality
video of a live performance for all of the same reasons, so they set an intention to create an appropriate performance space with live video capabilities, and a focus on the musician and their needs. Now, every performance at The Listening Room Phoenix has the ability to be audio and video recorded, with live editing and live streaming available. “Video from The Listening Room Phoenix will give artists a priceless tool to adequately share their live performance experience with fans. It will also be the tool that will help them secure booking opportunities at other venues,” Colletti says. The approximately 800-squarefoot space, which which has a 50-seat maximum live audience, includes a 20-foot stage, four camera digital set-up, professional stage lighting, Bose Professional Audio, and a green room for the performer. “We hope that the artists find the process at The Listening Room Phoenix UPTOWN |

smooth and welcoming. We see the performer as our only customer (and the audience is their customer), so we are intentionally building a process that is easy and efficient,” Colletti explains. While the duo intentionally created The Listening Room Phoenix for the acoustic musician, they simply desire artists who possess a level of talent that is worthy of a space free from distractions. “Although we desire performances of many genres and styles, we will not present the traditional band with drums, electric guitar and bass,” Colletti says. “Instead, we will present those same bands in a raw, stripped down format, on acoustic guitar with percussion.” And because the venue is designed for listening to music without the distractions of other noises, The Listening Room Phoenix does not serve any food or beverages – though they encourage guests to bring their own non-distracting (vegan) snacks and drinks. And, although special performances may be ticketed, most performances at The Listening Room Phoenix are at no cost to the audience, keeping the venue accessible to all true music lovers. “We are suggesting a $20 donation but encourage audiences to participate at the level they are most comfortable with,” Colletti explains. The performance schedule for The Listening Room Phoenix is filing up quickly, welcoming the following acts this month: local performers Aaron Howard and 76th Street, touring acts Desdimona and TJ Georgen and, The Listening Room’s very own Smith with Nashville touring artists Melody Guy. As the business grows, Colletti and Smith say they hope to become part of the fiber of the Phoenix community. “Additionally, we hope that we can help set a new standard for local and independent music in Phoenix and the neighboring cities. We hope to become the crossroads for collaboration for local musicians and touring artists.” 4614 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 480.390.4900; www.listeningroomphoenix.com.
