Two of Arizona’s Premier Plastic Surgeons Q: I heard that a tummy

tuck was a painful and long recovery, is that true? Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedures routinely are mis-characterized as horribly painful procedures with an extended recovery. On the contrary most patients that undergo this procedure in our practice report mild to moderate discomfort or pressure for the first 2-3 days after the procedure and are back to light aerobic activity within 2-3 weeks. The procedure usually involves tightening of the loose skin and fascia (diastic rectus) that results from pregnancy or weight fluctuation. Liposuction is often included to help sculpt the obliques. We are fortunate to be one of the few practices in Arizona routinely using a new long-acting, 72 hour local pain medication called Exparel. (bupivicain suspension) This injectable numbing agent has really revolutionized tummy tuck procedures in our practice such that many patients take only a small amount of pain medication and recover even quicker. Tummy tuck procedures continue to be one of the most rewarding procedures for me as a surgeon and for patients undergoing the rejuvenation.

Don’t let trigger finger keep you locked in pain. Painful swelling and inflammation of the tendon in the palm of the hand can now be treated with a quick and easy outpatient procedure. few years ago, I had the privilege of meeting singer Josh Groban on the red carpet at Celebrity Fight Night. We chatted for a few minutes, and it was easy to quickly see that he was a genuinely down-to-earth, nice guy. Fast-forward a few years, and now we were lucky enough to interview him for this issue as he prepared to head to the Valley to once again participate in and perform at the event. And you know what we quickly learned? That he’s still just as nice, just as down-to-earth, and just as (if not more) amazing. Celebrity Fight Night is one of my favorite events of the year. It’s the way an event should be—a fabulous time, and for a great cause. I’ve attended the past few years, and each year has been just as incredible as the previous one–and this year promises to continue the tradition. Take, for example, the headliners. This year’s emcee is once again superstar Reba McEntire, and the performers include such stellar acts as Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Ronnie Dunn, as well as Josh Groban. Josh shared with us that Celebrity Fight Night was one of the first events where he ever performed. He also shared with us the stories of fate that led him to where he is career-wise today, and about what he’s doing now. You can read the story on page 30. Celebrity Fight Night, which will be held on March 28, benefits the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute (the event is presented in honor of Muhammad Ali), as well as numerous other charities. In addition, we have lots of other great stories in this issue. Still looking for your soulmate? As the largest art museum in the Southwestern United States, the Phoenix Art Museum has built a reputation for excellence since it opened in 1959. A huge part of that success can be attributed to its director. Recently, the Board continuedâ&#x20AC;Ś

up close of Trustees named Amada Cruz as The Sybil Harrington Director of the Phoenix Art Museum, succeeding James K. Ballinger, who announced his intention to retire last April. Cruz, formerly executive director at San Antonio-based Artpace, one of the premier artist residency and exhibition programs in the world, assumed her new responsibilities in February. Her selection, with counsel and guidance from one of the nation’s most respected executive leadership and search firms, Russell Reynolds Associates, concludes an intensive seven-month process conducted by the Museum’s executive committee, which served as the search committee. “Amada has a solid track record of building programs and new initiatives at Bard College, USA Artists and, most recently, Artpace,” says Phoenix Art Museum Board of Trustees Chairman Jim Patterson. “The search process was thorough, comprehensive and demanding, and the search committee was unanimous in choosing Amada as the new director to build upon the remarkable foundation established by Jim Ballinger and his staff. She brings a very high-energy, creative and entrepreneurial approach to museum leadership, and we are confident she can lead us to the next level of distinction.” Ballinger, who served as the Museum director for 32 years and celebrated his 40th anniversary with the museum in December, will assist in the transition “for as long as my input, assistance and counsel is needed to ensure that the transition is smooth so Amada can hit the ground running and continue the Museum’s forward progress,” he says. “She is a highly respected arts professional whose diverse experience, extensive background, knowledge and innovative spirit will serve Phoenix Art Museum and our community well for years to come.” Understandably, Ballinger leaves behind big shoes to fill, something Cruz is aware of, but not afraid of. “Like Jim, I have a long career devoted to nurturing and promoting excellence in art,” she says. “But I am arriving as an outsider with a varied career as a contemporary art curator, a grant maker in

the arts, as well as a museum and artist residency director. All these experiences will contribute to a different approach as we move the Phoenix Art Museum to its next phase. And by the way, I wear heels.” Cruz developed a love for art early in her life, and not surprisingly, reports loving “too many” artists to have a favorite. “It's an eclectic mix,” she explains, “from Spanish Old Masters like Diego Velasquez and Zurbaran to conceptual Brazilian art to contemporary American innovators like Andy Warhol and Cindy Sherman. I was dragged as a kid to museums like The Metropolitan [Museum of Art] in New York and the Art Institute in Chicago, and loved those places. My family had an appreciation of culture, so it seems preordained that I would end up with a career in the arts.” There are many things that excite her about this opportunity—“The Museum's strong collections and the beautiful space they live in; the chance to engage with and grow a varied audience; and the sense of Phoenix as a new, still-evolving city, at least to me,” she says—as well as a long list of reasons that drew her to accepting the position.

“Also the sheer numbers of supporters,” she says. “It claims to have more volunteers at every level than any museum in the country, and I believe it! It means that the Museum matters to so many people here, and that kind of support is very powerful and inspiring.” Accepting the position also meant moving to a brand new city, something that intrigued Cruz. “It really does seem like a city that's still in formation, and that's exciting because you can make an impact,” she explains. “The hierarchies and traditions aren't as set as on the East Coast. I also find the landscape exotically beautiful.” Cruz, who enjoys reading, travel, good food and wine with friends, and yoga, considers herself lucky to be in this position, an outlook that will help if stress creeps in. “It's a privilege to be making a living in the arts, and any occasional stress is well worth the joy and intellectual buzz,” she says. ver been called into a meeting to serve as an expert on a subject? It’s a great feeling. Now imagine that meeting is taking place a world away—and you’ve been invited by the United Nations. Arizona Summit Law School professor and founding faculty member Steven Gonzales was invited by the United Nations to assist the Industrial Court of Botswana on the development of the court’s alternative dispute resolution (ADR) system. It was quite the honor. “For more than 10 years, I have had the privilege of serving as a representative to the United Nations Forum on Indigenous Issues, and was pleasantly surprised when the Industrial Court of Botswana decided to use their United Nations grant to invite me to train their judiciary and staff, and help design an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) program,” says Gonzales. “This is exciting because it will help the country, and has the potential for being applied in other African countries. I am very proud to bring my experience in the law, and as a law professor, to other countries.”

Were you familiar with Botswana prior to helping with this initiative? Yes, this was my second trip to beautiful Botswana. Both trips provided me with the opportunity to work with members of the courts, as well as visits in the community, rural bush and safari. Can you explain in layman’s terms what the issue is that you are helping with, and how you are helping? ADR is a system of resolving disputes outside of trial and traditional litigation. Mediation is a major form of dispute resolution and is commonly used because it helps to more amicably resolve a dispute fairly, and in a time-efficient and cost-effective way. Through a working ADR system the backlog will be reduced, and ultimately it brings expedited, amicable resolutions for both workers and the businesses. What was it like to travel to Botswana? Botswana is actually quite similar to Arizona! The climate, terrain and dry desert climate are shared by both. It’s a journey getting there, but well worth it. UPTOWN |

I know sunscreen is crucial, but some give me an itchy rash. What are my options?

Sunscreen falls into two categories: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens are lighter formulations, but must be applied in advance. Physical sunscreens like zinc oxide work instantly, but are traditionally thicker and heavier – though this type of sunscreen is increasingly available in lighter formulas (even powders). Both are effective, but different; chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays, rendering them harmless, while physical sunscreens reflect rays so they cannot penetrate skin. It’s more common for people to have allergies to the chemical type, so if you’ve experienced irritation from sunscreen, try switching to the physical type. t all began when Stephen Baxter moved to Arizona to get involved in real estate. He worked his way from the bottom up, learning every phase—from finding investors to remodeling and flipping homes, all while working towards owning his own company. In 2013, Baxter launched The Investor Hub (602.840.3073; www.theinvestorhub.com), which provides great options for all parties involved—investors, sellers and buyers. He explains that Investor Hub provides both the clients and the investors numerous ways to be involved, from the sale to the remodeling of a home, essentially bridging the gap between the buyer and the seller to make a home sale less stressful and tailored to each individual. On a daily basis, Baxter works closely with the company’s investors, and oversees operations both with buyers and sellers. In his free time, he enjoys traveling and spending time with his family—he has two young children and coaches their sports teams.

What is your favorite part of the flipping process? I can think of a couple of homes that the most rewarding part was purchasing the home from someone who really needed to sell. I sometimes still hear from those people thanking for me being there and helping them get through a challenging time in their life. I have also sometimes walked those same homes with the original sellers after I—or an investor—transformed it, only to see the excitement and enjoyment as they reminisce about what they remember about the home. For me it’s about the experience. What are a few of your favorite places to travel? My wife and I were married on the island of Kauai, so Hawaii is near and dear to our hearts. This past Christmas I took my wife and kids to Aspen. It was the first time any of them had seen real snow (meaning more then an inch or two) and that was awesome to watch them take in. UPTOWN |

ixing practicality and hip–for Olivia Laux, owner of Float Balloon Tours, it’s her go-to fashion look. Laux spends much of her day outdoors and has to dress appropriately, but also knows that for the days she is inside, she wants to be just as comfortable. “My favorite outfit to pull together would be black skinny jeans with a basic shirt and a denim button-down shirt or jacket,” says Laux. “I feel like our style era is a combination of the different style turns of the past, and I like to incorporate those all into my look.” The fashion favorites which Laux likes to wear daily include Rachel Comey, Karen Walker and Alexander Wang. Laux tends to drift to these styles due to their contemporary looks mixed with pulling past fashions forward. Laux adds that she enjoys fashions with a history. “I love things that are old. I am always drawn to vintage, passeddown clothing that has a story. These are the pieces I find I connect to the most.”

Is there a particular celebrity whose style you emulate and why? Hmmm, so many stylish celebs—I love Chloë Sevigny and Alexa Chung's ability to perfectly mix vintage and modern pieces while managing to look effortlessly put-together. What style is the home you live in? Does it match your personal clothing style? Definitely matches! Our house looks like it organized itself through use, which feels lovely to me. It's filled with a mix of Danish furniture, estate sale treasures, and tons of plants. What is the one piece of clothing in your closet you simply cannot live without and why? I'm an Arizona native and I freeze at about 85 degrees, so as silly as it sounds, it has to be my denim button-down. The Arizona political community has a tendency to stick with what is traditionally safe—think black or navy suits paired with nondescript ties. But Russell Smoldon, the chief executive officer of B3 Strategies in Phoenix, values variety in his wardrobe. Fashionably speaking, he puts a spin to the classic PB&J. Smoldon has always beat to his own drum. He distinguishes his company from other lobbying firms based on its unique concept, “The Public Policy Architects— [architects] that build policy brick-by-brick, developing and implementing strategies from the ground up.” Similarly, his garb reflects his personality and the personality of B3 Strategies. For Smoldon, it’s all about the details, from a must-have French cuff shirt with a contrast collar for effect to vintage flair cufflinks. “I have always loved the pocket hankies, long before they were a fad, but I try to keep it interesting by not doing the matchymatch to my tie. I like mixing prints,” he says. This mixed-patterned, colorfully dressed CEO is in good company when it comes to learning about fashion fads and faux pas. “I attribute my eye for fashion to my wife, along with my daughter who is in New York and majoring in fashion future trending,” he admits. Smoldon of course gets asked a lot of public policy questions, but “one of the first questions I get in any meeting is what color I am wearing today!”

Describe your style in three words: Eclectic, daring, confident. What are some of your favorite clothing stores? I find most of my clothes at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Macy's. Your bio mentions that you are a prolific reader and golfer. Who is your favorite or what is your favorite novel? And where do you like to play golf? Ernest Hemmingway is one of my favorite classic authors, and The Sun Also Rises is one of my all-time favorite novels. I also always appreciate the biting commentary of Kurt Vonnegut in Cat’s Cradle. HOW A FEW TWISTS OF FATE, CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT, AND ONE AMAZING VOICE TURNED JOSH GROBAN INTO A HOUSEHOLD NAME BY SHANA SCHWARZ

Reading about Josh Groban’s voice is like hearing someone describe the ceiling of the Sistene Chapel: you understand that it’s amazing, but you have to experience it to really get it. If you are somehow not familiar with Groban, come on out from that rock you’ve been living under and give him a listen. We got to chat with him before his performance at this year’s Celebrity Fight Night, a star-studded evening presented in honor of featured guest, Muhammad Ali, and discovered the only thing more incredible than his voice is his graciousness. Seriously, he might be the nicest guy in show business.

That may be because, despite having a voice for the ages, he kind of fell into stardom backwards. He wasn’t looking for it, but it found him anyway. When his voice coach introduced him to music industry legend David Foster, the rest, as they say, is history. When Italian singer Andrea Bocelli couldn’t make a Grammy rehearsal to sing “The Prayer” with Celine Dion, Groban stepped up—and has never looked back. “The Grammy stage is kinda where so much of my career began with David Foster calling me in for rehearsal,” explains Groban. “I was 17 at the time. Singing with Celine and being a part of that—it was one of those moments I’ll never forget. Four or five years ago I got to sing that song with Bocelli at the Grammys, so it was kind of a crazy full circle. It’s an incredible song and I was so lucky early on to have done it so many times—with Celine, with Charlotte [Church]—it was incredible. It’s kind of a modern classic. What I love most about it is that two very different voices can come together to make something so beautiful, and I was very lucky to have a song like that early.” From there, he was discovered by a broader audience, thanks to one of the biggest television shows of the late 1990s. “That was another serendipitous moment, like the Grammy thing,” he says. “I was thrown into these kind of insane situations where I had to become a professional and be a student at the same time. The Ally McBeal situation was a complete fluke. I was singing at something in Los Angeles and David E. Kelley (the creator of Ally McBeal) was there and he said, ‘I want you to sing for 30 seconds at the end of this episode,’ and I said, ‘Sure, great.’ I didn’t think it was a big deal at the time. And then Robert Downey Jr. was not available to come to set suddenly. He was having a bit of a hard time in his life at that moment and so David Kelley said, ‘I’m going to write you into this whole episode. I know this is a bit of a surprise, but I hope you can act because you’re now the star of the episode.’ “It was kind of unprecedented and it was kind of insane to have jumped in there and have that kind of experience. I had just come from a theater background in school so it was great, especially with my kind of music where things like radio

aren’t always a factor. When you can put a song like ‘To Where You Are’ or ‘You’re So You,’ the two songs I did on that show, and put them within a storyline, and really be able to express what those songs mean through a character in a show that was so huge at the time, it really hit home for a lot of people and it was a great starting point for me.” Lucky for David E. Kelley, Groban can act—and he captivated the audience so well that fans begged to have him back. Before his music career took off, in fact, Groban thought his life would follow a much different path. “I’m not going to pretend I had it all figured out at 16- or 17-years-old, which is why I’m such a proponent of kids getting well-rounded arts educations from a young age; I didn’t know what I wanted at that point,” explains Groban. “I loved to act, I loved to sing, I loved theater. say to myself, ‘I’m going to be this one thing or nothing.’ I enjoyed doing it all. The path that I kinda had for myself on paper was that I was going to go to Broadway and do some musical theater. I felt like my voice would be right for a lot of those shows. Meeting David Foster, of course, is not the kind of thing you can prepare for, although some people do. There are certain people, especially growing up in Los Angeles, where their goal is, ‘I’m going to drop everything and I’m going to get a record deal.’ That was not my bag. That was something that happened really just so by surprise for me, that someone would say, ‘Hey, I think your voice is something we can sell to the masses.’ Nobody was more surprised than me. “When I think about the growth that’s happened since then, it’s come full circle for me to be releasing an album of show tunes in the next few months. It’s really

been a labor of love for me and such a passion project for me because that’s really where this whole thing started. I had to leave many of those songs behind when I wanted to embark on this solo career, but to be able to sing these songs that I love so much and really be able to present them in a way that I feel is finally right is really gratifying.” In addition to those early television appearances, an Arizona event also played an important role in Groban’s career launch. “I was first introduced to Celebrity Fight Night through David Foster, who introduced me to Jimmy Walker, and that was really early on in my career,” says Groban. “I was probably about 19 at the time, and it was one of the first events that I ever performed at and it was an incredible experience. Whenever you get to lend your musical side to an event that is so important like that one and to

support the great work that Jimmy Walker and Muhammad Ali are doing, and at such a young age, it’s amazing, and we’ve kinda grown up together. It’s great to see how much the organization has grown in the last 14 years, and for them to have continued to be supporters of mine and to be able to pay that back… it’s been a great partnership and a great friendship.” Groban will perform at this year’s Celebrity Fight Night, which will be held on March 28 at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, and, as always, he’s looking forward to the people he’ll see. “I get starstruck at Fight Night,” he admits. “In the music world, you’re always around musicians all the time and it’s kinda hard to get starstruck for music stars just because you do get a little jaded because you wind up kind of running into each other at lots of different things. aren’t people I get to meet every day. So, of course, getting to meet Muhammad Ali was one of the great thrills. He was somebody that I actually first met when I was about 8-years-old. I was in a restaurant and my parents and I were walking out of the restaurant, and he picked me up and gave me a kiss on the cheek. And my dad said, ‘Oh my God, that was Muhammad Ali. You’re going to remember this day for the rest of your life.’ I was 8-years-old, so I was like, ‘Ok, cool, that man just gave me a kiss on the cheek.’ He was so nice to me and he was playing around with me, so for all these years later to have been able to support him and his incredible vision, and just to be able to put a smile on his face, has been a great thrill. It’s impossible to not be starstruck around him.” In addition to Celebrity Fight Night, Groban has performed at events supporting other great causes around the world, and is now working with a new group that is close to his heart. “My fans raised a huge amount of money for me and said, ‘We want you to start your own foundation,’ and so long story short, it became what is now the Find Your Light Foundation,” says Groban. “It’s my passion now. My foundation is about providing young people with that arts foundation; getting that cultural awareness into the hands of young people around the country and around the world. That’s something that I have a very personal experience with, that I lived through, that my success is a direct result of, and so through Find Your Light, we want to become one of the go-to organizations for people who need that help. It’s been fun and it’s going to be great.” Celebrity Fight Night was founded in 1994 in hopes of raising money for local charities through a premier event. Each year, the gala, which is recognized as one of the nation’s elite events, attracts celebrities from the sports and entertainment worlds. MAZVO AUTO CAR CARE CENTER’S SHAHE KOULLOUKIAN EXPLAINS WHY, WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR CAR, THE INTERNET DOESN’T ALWAYS KNOW BEST. Though it’s great for watching funny cat videos (admit it!), the Internet isn’t always the most trustworthy place to get reliable information. It’s like when you look up a minor cold symptom and suddenly you’re convinced it’s a deadly disease: sometimes it’s difficult to know what’s accurate and what’s not, especially when you’re not a professional. The same holds true for diagnosing problems with your car, says Shahe Koulloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Car Care Center. “Customers call or come in all the time with fear that there is something wrong with the vehicle because of a certain noise or smell,” he says. “This fear is ignited by being a student of ‘Google University.’ ‘The Internet says it could be this and the Internet says I need to do this. I’M WORRIED, BECAUSE I READ ON THE INTERNET THAT MY CAR COULD BLOW UP!’” But Shahe has some sage advice for all the Google gurus: remember that the Internet didn’t create the information – just relayed it – and it isn’t always right. “Man can make mistakes regardless of good intentions, and provide wrong information that can lead to false fear and panic,” he points out. “The first step in solving a problem is recognizing there is one. Do the Internet research to give you an idea of what you’re dealing with, but don’t let it dictate the end result of what’s going on with your vehicle.” For that, Shahe says, you need an open dialogue with your auto repair facility; the better you’re able to convey to a mechanic what’s wrong with your vehicle, the easier it is for a technician to diagnose and fix the problem. He advises writing down ahead of time what kinds of problems you’re having, noting specific sounds, sensations, odors, or leaks, and when and how frequently they occur. What happened just before the car stopped running? Did it function normally the day before it didn’t start? Of course, many of these problems could be avoided altogether with a few measures of preventive maintenance. The basics – oil changes, tire pressure checks, and scheduled inspections – are like getting regular checkups at the doctor. They maintain overall

health and vastly improve your chances of catching anything serious before it becomes a major problem. “The best way to save money over the life of a vehicle is to choose a high-quality, fullservice repair shop and allow them do all of the necessary maintenance and repair work,” says Shahe. “Make the connection with your repair facility and have a dialogue about what’s truly going on. This will lead to recognizing what sort of problem your vehicle is having, and whether it’s safe to hold off on repairs.” Developing a good relationship with your auto care provider is not only beneficial for your car, saving you time and money in the long run. It can also help you to make informed decisions, no second-guessing – or Google – required.

his is a “tail” to remember—a homeless animal’s “tail,” that is. At the 17th Annual Compassion with Fashion event, those tails—and tales—will be top-of-mind, as the Valley’s most passionate animal advocates raise money to help care for thousands of homeless animals. The luncheon event will begin with a bubbly champagne raffle, presented by Schmitt Jewelers, as well as a silent auction that will be presented by Hill’s Science Diet. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on items ranging from trips and staycations to a one-of-a-kind, limited-edition “Petcasso” Art Collection. The event will continue with a luncheon, as well as a fashion show featuring selections from Biltmore Fashion Park. And of course, the true stars of the day will be there—the more than dozen adoptable pets who will be given a second chance at life through the Humane

Society’s programs and services. The animals are hoping to find their “furever” family and home while at the event. And hopefully they will—at last year’s event, 20 pets found homes, and $533,000 was raised, which was enough to help care for more than 1,600 homeless animals.

Barrio Urbano is nothing like the original Barrio Café (or any of my other concepts). It's meant to be an energetic and casual neighborhood Mexican eatery featuring all-day dining. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISH ON THE MENU?

Never a fair question! First, I love the idea of featuring an appetizer for breakfast by putting fresh local produce on the menu, topped with piloncillo sugar glazed rolled oats, nuts, raisins and local honey. I also love that we always use local cage-free eggs, 100 percent maple syrup, and items like our house-cured jalapeño bacon. But, my biggest love right now is probably the Relleno off of our dinner menu, made with Maytag blue, goat, and Oaxaca cheeses stuffed in a flameroasted poblano pepper, topped with marinated skirt steak and homemade puff pastry dough.

rohibition era, meet modern times—and the Regan’s Final Word cocktail at The Henry. “This drink is a variation of the prohibition-era cocktail that originally contained gin, lime, Maraschino, and Green Chartreuse. With the resurgence of these Prohibition era-type cocktails, a bartender in New York City, Phil Ward, created what became a particularly well-known variation of the drink. Ward substituted gin with Rye Whiskey, lemon for lime, then Green for Yellow Chartreuse, and The Final Ward cocktail was born. Regan’s Final Word is play on both cocktails, featuring Rye Whiskey, Maraschino, lime and Green Chartreuse,” explains Mat Snapp, the beverage director at Fox Restaurant Concepts. Snapp explains that the cocktail is a great way for someone to be introduced to Green Chartreuse and Luxardo Maraschino if they’re not already familiar with the spirits. As for why this version is called Regan’s Final Word? “Well, I would make it for Regan Jasper, our vice president of beverage, to sip on during the last of our soft opening parties,” Snapp explains. “It became part of the opening tradition–when Regan had completed coaching and teaching, he’d ask for his signature cocktail. ‘No more teaching tonight, no more words,’ he’d say. When we opened The Henry, I refined it a bit, snuck it onto the menu without telling him, and it was like a wonderful little surprise.” 4455 E. URBAN ART WITH A HEART

rban realism. That is how you would hear artist James Randle describe himself and his own works of art. The oil painter puts a lot of focus on manmade elements, items that spark his interest, including cars, buildings and other things that would make a bold statement. Randle has been working from his Biltmore-area studio for more than two years now, and is finding himself growing more and more involved in the surrounding art community. Randle’s support for the community can be seen at the upcoming Art from the Heart art auction, an annual event benefiting Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona, which will take place on March 7. “I knew from a young age I was going to be an artist,” says Randle. “These sort of art events are a great way to not only showcase my work, but to get out there in the community and give back to so many.” Randle says he works in a very realistic manner, meaning he works off of references all around him. “I travel a lot. We have strong ties to the Bay Area and I am always taking photographs wherever I go. I then take those pictures to the studio and pick several photos out and put them together to

create one image.” Randle takes his inspirations from across the board, trying not to limit himself to one source. When it comes to artists and photographers, Randle takes some of his personal aspirations from names such as Richard Estes, Edward Hopper and Stephen Shore. Randle says these artists most reflect the direction his work is going in today, as well as where he hopes to take his artwork in the future. Focusing on what is around him is very important to Randle. “I always take a camera with me no matter where I am going; I just take photos where I am,” he says. “You have to be flexible with your work. my work I am about 80 percent painting, and 20 percent taking photos, always keeping my body of work moving organically with life.” Right now, Randle’s studio is not open to the public, but he is always open to anyone who contacts him directly and would like to check out the works of art that may be currently underway. He also has several shows on his schedule throughout the year. The new cocktail trend? Tea Peach Bellini Punch

EACH BELLINI PUNCH P 1-2 tsp. TeaRoyalty Peach Bellini Green Tea 12 oz. bourbon 6 oz. fresh lemon juice 4 oz. simple syrup Lemon peel or peach slice (garnish) Soak tea leaves in bourbon overnight and strain. Mix together all other ingredients. Serve in an old fashioned glass with garnish.

“T

ea is an amazingly versatile beverage,” says Chris Sossaman, a local tea educator and founder of TeaRoyalty, an Arizona purveyor of fine loose leaf teas that recently launched a cocktail-inspired line available Valleywide. But, while the idea of these uniquely flavored teas like Peach Bellini, Pink Champagne, Mighty Mojito, Royal Icewine and Piña Colada Green sounds delicious, can actual tea be used as an ingredient in a cocktail itself? Yes! According to Sossaman, the basic guideline in creating great “TeaTails” is to start with a good loose-leaf tea, and then simply add something sweet, something sour, and a spirit. “Voilà, instant party,” says Sossaman, who shares some popular local TeaTails from Valley menus, as well as some recipes to try at home.

LOCAL MENU SPOTLIGHTS DIRTY CHAI MARTINI AT STEAK 44 3 oz. Grey Goose vodka 2 oz. chai tea syrup 1 oz. simple syrup 1 oz. espresso 1 oz. cream Shake over ice and serve up in a martini glass with three espresso beans. Serves one.

MIGHTY MOJITO TEATAIL 2 oz. brewed and chilled TeaRoyalty Mighty Mojito Herbal Tea 1½ oz. white rum ½ oz. simple syrup ½ oz. lime juice Splash of club soda Sprig of mint (garnish) Brew one-to-two tsp. of tea in one cup of boiled water and allow to cool for at least 10 min. and strain. Mix with the first four ingredients and serve on the rocks with a splash of club soda. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig.

ROYAL ICEWINE TEATAIL 1 oz. brewed and chilled TeaRoyalty Royal Icewine 1½ oz. vodka ½ oz. grenadine syrup Blackberry (garnish) Pour 1 cup of just-boiled water over 1-2 tsp. of Royal Icewine black tea. Brew six minutes, then strain and cool. Combine with other ingredients and shake with ice. Serve in a martini glass, with garnish.

TeaRoyalty Very Elderberry Simple Syrup 1½ oz. botanical gin ½ oz. pomegranate juice 1 splash club soda To make simple syrup, simmer one cup of water with one cup of sugar, pour over two Tbsp. Very Elderberry loose leaf tea. Steep until cool, strain into a sterile bottle or jar (makes one cup). Mix with other ingredients, except club soda. Shake in cocktail shaker. Serve in Collins glass with a splash of club soda.
