There sure is a lot happening in the Valley this month, and were covering it all, from philanthropic events to holiday celebrations to the signal of spring. As far as philanthropy goes, we’re highlighting some pretty spectacular women on our cover. If you don’t know their faces, you might know their stores – My Sister’s Closet, My Sister’s Attic and Well Suited. These two entrepreneurs (and fashionistas!) paved the way for shoppers everywhere and now, they’re doing so in the charity world. Read all about their love of animals and their big event this month on page 30. We’re also covering all that comes with St. Patrick’s Day – the green beer, traditional Irish food and fun music – by highlighting 12 Valley spots (page 46) that are delivering it all this month. March also signals the beginning of spring. The weather is beautiful and the trends are changing with the season. Put away those red wines and opt for one of the light white wine varietals we’ve found on page 68. Another thing to ditch this month is your time at home – get out there and enjoy the weather. Not sure where to go? Sip, snack and socialize on one of our favorite patios (page 68). And, finally, it’s also time to put the winter colors away and opt for some lighter threads. We’re loving everything in pastels on page 52. It’s also the beginning of bathing suit season, so you might be hitting the gym a bit more. If you want to track your fitness but you’re not so sure about the sporty looking products on the market, flip to page 51 for a chic option. And, turn to page 62 to find the best products that will take you from sweat to sparkle postgym in just 15 minutes. Let’s just hope this beautiful weather lasts through the month! Salaried Employee Rights in Arizona Overtime Pay May Apply to Salaried Employees

Overtime pay in Arizona is governed by federal law via The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). While salaried employees are usually exempt from overtime pay, this is not always the case. According to Section 13(a)(1) of the FLSA, an executive, administrator and similar professionals earning $455 per week or more are not owed overtime by law. Recent changes that took place after December 1, 2016 recently increased this figure to $913 per week. Salaried employees who make less than this amount may be entitled to overtime pay under federal law, so talk to an Arizona employment lawyer if you believe you were unfairly denied overtime as a salaried worker.

Paycheck-Related Rights for Salaried Employees

The majority of employers are required to pay salaried employees at least twice a month and not more than 16 days apart. Further, the payments should be made according to a regular schedule. As an “at will” employment state, Arizona employers may terminate a salaried worker for any lawful reason. However, if you were terminated, the Arizona employer is requires to pay all due wages within seven working days or the upcoming pay period’s end, whichever is first.

Salaried Employees Are Entitled to Equal Pay for Equal Work

Federal and Arizona law alike both require employers to pay employees of both genders equally for the same quantity, quality and classification of work. While pay differences can exist based on years on the job, seniority, skills and similar distinguishing factors, no discriminatory and unlawful standards may be used to justify a difference in compensation.

Arizona Employee Rights to Time Off From Work

Nearly all Arizona employees, including salaried workers, will qualify for paid sick leave based on the recent changes brought by The Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act. The minimum amount of sick leave you can expect to receive will be based on the size of the employer. Companies with less than 15 workers must provide at least 24 hours of sick time, and larger companies with more than 15 employees are expected to provide a minimum of 40 hours of sick leave. Further, workers must obtain one hour of Arizona sick leave time for every 30 hours of employed work they provide to an employer. One key exception to these requirements is that new employees — defined as workers who have been on the job for less than 90 days — cannot use paid sick time. Arizona law permits employees to use this sick leave time for their own medical issues as well as the issues of their family members. A.R.S. §23-373 expressly states that paid sick time can be used for employees and their family in the following ways: • A public health emergency • Medical care for both mental and physical injuries, illnesses or health conditions • Handling domestic violence, sexual violence, abuse, stalking or similar issues that jeopardize the worker’s safety or the safety of a family member

CAPTURING CONFIDENCE Karen Shell uses photography to give at-risk children a new perspective on life

Photographer Karen Shell believes that everyone has their own recipe for happiness. Hers consists of three things: earning a living doing something she enjoys; making time for adventure and play; and giving back. Keeping those elements in equal balance helps her stay grounded and focused on the things that matter most.

Shell never aspired to become a photographer, in fact, she says it’s rather happenstance that she fell into the profession. Growing up she was very creative and always knew that she’d end up as an artist of some sort, but being a photographer never occurred to her — she didn’t even own a camera. For college,

Shell was awarded an academic scholarship to Arizona State University, and planned to obtain a degree in graphic design. However, the universe had other plans, and when she discovered that the waiting list for that program was two years, she turned her gaze to photography. “I’ve been a freelance commercial photographer for 29 years,” says Shell, “and it’s perfectly suited for me. I’ve gotten to travel the world, meet people, and learn things that I never would’ve been exposed to otherwise. I’m so blessed that I’ve been able to spend my whole life supporting myself doing something I absolutely love.”

20

Something else that Shell loves is donating her time, effort, and funds to worthwhile charities and projects. Over the last several decades, she’s done everything from throwing birthday parties for children at domestic abuse shelters, to playing kickball with the mentally handicapped, to providing free school pictures for more than 1,000 homeless children. The endeavor that Shell has found most fulfilling, however, is one-on-one mentoring with at-risk youth (meaning children who are in foster care, shelters, or homeless, and who subsist at, or below, the poverty line). “I was always looking for ways to inspire and empower these kids,” says Shell. “So, I thought I’d try a photography project; having no idea what it would grow into.” She bought a handful of cameras, enlisted the help of fellow photographers to act as mentors, and created an after-school program, calling it Kids in Focus. Over the course of nine weeks, students are taught the basics of photography, and they and their mentors venture out on sightseeing excursions (whether it’s the streets of Downtown Phoenix or Papago Park) to explore and capture. Six years after its inception, the program continues to grow, and, according to Shell, transform lives. “With every project,” she says, “I become more and more amazed at the changes in these kids. Anger issues disappear; self-confidence levels go through the roof; they’re calmer and happier, because they have a new way to express themselves, creatively.” Shell realized that here’s something safe about a camera for these kids. Many at-risk youth tend to keep their eyes on the ground; they’ve been through significant challenges and traumas, and as a result, have withdrawn from the world. But with a camera, they can safely look up and look around, gradually reconnecting with people, environments, and even themselves. The program culminates in a photo exhibit of the children’s favorite works at the Arizona Science Center. Shell says it’s incredibly special to see these abused and neglected kids standing proudly next to their photography, confidently interacting with the public, and dressed to the nines (she makes sure they all have something nice to wear, drawing upon donations when needed). “The purpose of the night is to give these kids an opportunity to shine,” Shell says. “But the truly amazing part is that people have no clue what their backgrounds are.” In previous years, the exhibit opening, which is open to the public, has drawn crowds of about 500, and because it’s such an uplifting and moving experience, Shell invites everyone to come enjoy it. As far as future plans for Kids in Focus, Shell hopes to keep the program going as long as she possibly can. “It can be quite exhausting, still earning my living as a photographer and doing this, but I know that I was meant to do it. I feel like my whole life has been grooming me for this.” The Kids In Focus Exhibit Opening will take place March 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at CREATE at Arizona Science Center, 105 N. 5th St., Phoenix; 602.753.6339; www.kidsinfocus.org.

JANET GREEN’S HEART BEAT The Phoenix Chamber Music Society’s executive director shares her keys to happiness

BY SUE BREDING / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

At 10 years old, Janet Green played the piano for at least three hours every day – by choice. Her mom, worried she would turn out to be a “music nerd,” enrolled her in golf lessons. Apart from becoming quite the golfer, Green did indeed become a music nerd – and an accomplished one at that. By the time Green was a high school senior, she was using her musical gifts to teach piano to 45 students, one of which – Arthur (Buddy) Strong – who went on to work as a pianist for both Usher and Ariana Grande. These days, her Central Phoenix home is like a museum for musical instruments. Her collection of 20 spans pieces from the Medieval era, the Renaissance era and the Baroque period. “People say to me, what an eclectic home. Do you play all of these?” Green says. The answer is yes, she does. The wonderfully diverse collection includes unique instruments such as a vihuela (an old Spanish guitar) and dumbek (a Middle Eastern drum). Perhaps two of her most interesting pieces include the 7-foot French harpsichord with two keyboards – an instrument she built herself and rents to the Phoenix Symphony every year for the Messiah performance – and her square grand piano from the late 1800s that has been repurposed into her dining room table. Green, who founded local early ensemble group, Música Dolce, has been involved in the Phoenix Chamber Music Society for many years, and has served as the society’s executive director for 15 years. “Chamber music is like watching musicians have a conversation musically as they argue, laugh and have detailed discussions,” she explains. In her free time, you can find her in her backyard, with her hands and bare feet in the dirt, tending to her vegetables, herbs and fruit trees. “I have a sign in one of the gardens that says, ‘nothing bugs me when I'm in my garden,’” Green says. “That, the piano and a golf course are my solaces in life.”

BELIEVE AND BE LOVE Aaron Ginn-Forsberg’s long journey to learn a simple truth

BY LAURA STODDARD / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

If there’s one thing Aaron Ginn-Forsberg believes in, it’s love. Love that begins within one’s self, and spills over into the rest of the world. He tries to impart this belief to his friends, family, co-workers, and even strangers. People need to live their lives without fear, he says, admitting that it took him a while to personally get to that point. Ginn-Forsberg was raised in Portland, Oregon, the only boy among six sisters. He had many different interests growing up, and worked a variety of jobs, but one thing he always knew was that he wanted to make a difference. “My entire life has involved helping people,” he says. “Trying to enrich people’s lives; help them through different struggles.” He spent 15 years as a pastor, which gave him ample opportunities to help others. His next job, as a bartender, also allowed him to be a listening ear and friend to many people. In the ensuing years, on top of being a father of three, Ginn-Forsberg has worked as a model, actor, and now realtor. He also makes meditation and journaling a focal point of his life, which he says keeps him grounded. In his current role at BTG Real Estate, GinnForsberg says his co-workers foster an attitude of giving, more than taking; of building relationships and trying to help people. He calls it a “be love” attitude, and it means just that – whatever a person needs at that moment to feel loved, be that. He’s currently writing a book to further promote the idea of how one can “be love” and succeed in both business and life. “There doesn’t have to be a separation,” he says. “The best way to ‘be love’ to someone is to be honest with them about where things are at, and what you’re both feeling. And if you learn how to do that, it literally changes lives.”

THIS JUST IN… REPORTING IN STYLE Justin Pazera’s ensembles compliment his easygoing on-air persona BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

Justin Pazera is an Emmy Award-winning anchor for ABC15 Arizona. Growing up outside of Indiana, fashion influenced him as early as kindergarten, when he attended private school. The dress code included a button-down shirt and dress pants. He felt more comfortable dressed up than dressed down and became accustomed to the look. Classic style stayed with Pazera as he went on to work in broadcast news in Chicago, Illinois and Omaha, Nebraska, however his move to the Valley’s heat changed his perspective on clothing. “In the Midwest, you wear shorts for three months out of the year, and here you can wear shorts for 10 months,” he says. “I get sick of wearing shorts. I want to put on some blue jeans!” ABC15 is relatively relaxed when it comes to wardrobe requirements, something Pazera appreciates. He says a nice polo or dress shirt can be worn on air anytime. When he isn’t in front of the camera, Pazera’s style is simple and straightforward. “I like a good blazer because I can really dress things up, especially paired with a nice pair of jeans,” he explains.

Do viewers ask you for fashion advice? On Instagram I always get people asking me what I wore on air. A lot of times, I get more comments about what I wear, rather than the actual story that I’m reporting. That happens to the women reporters as well. What are some of your favorite wardrobe looks? I really like the color black and I love lines, especially military-style lines – something with a stripe going down the leg or a stripe on the shoulder. I like that military look. Where are your favorite places to shop? I will shop everywhere from high-end stores to Forever 21. No joke! I will go everywhere. I like Forever 21 for jackets, but if you pair those with a good pair of boots and a great pair of jeans, it doesn’t look like you just spent $20 on a jacket.

HER STYLE

FROM THE ARMY TO THE ARMOIRE Tabitha Evans’ personal style and interior design aesthetic go hand-in-hand BY LAURA STODDARD / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

Valley native, Tabitha Evans has done and seen many things in her life. Traveling the world, working in military intelligence will do that for you. When she returned home, however, she knew her future lie in a much more creative field. “I wanted to be either a chef or an interior designer,” she says. “But I also wanted to have children, and I realized the restaurant business wasn’t a great place to raise a family, so I started interior design school.” Today, Evans is the owner of Tabitha Evans Design, and president of the American Society of Interior Designers. When not enmeshed with tile samples, paint swatches, and fabric textures, she enjoys focusing on family and fashion. “I feel like fashion and interiors really run together,” Evans says. “Both have the ability to elevate moods, and convey beauty and character.” Evans’ closet contains a little bit of everything (including those military fatigues), but as with her interiors, she favors contemporary designs. However, don’t ask her to pinpoint one favorite outfit. “I don’t think I could do it,” she laughs. “I love them all.”

Favorite current fashion trend: Sleeves. Whether it’s ruffles on the sleeve, or the sleeve being bunched, or like a cap sleeve or a bell sleeve. There’s just something really interesting and unique in sleeves right now. Is there an accessory you can’t go without? I would say a fun, funky bracelet. That’s like my go-to. I feel like you could take a pair of jeans and a T-shirt and put on a big, chunky bracelet, and it just makes it look so much better. Describe your personal style: I’d call it contemporary chic, but a little bit edgy. I still love adding a little tradition in there, so it’s like Kelly Wearstler meets Audrey Hepburn. Just like my interiors, I like to do fun or unexpected things, like animal prints or a little Asian influence.

Within the past decade, consignment stores have truly taken flight. Television shows like Fashion Hunters, House of Consignment and Resale Royalty, aired and reshaped the way people viewed secondhand items. Additionally, shoppers are more conscious today about their spending habits, turning away from retail and seeking resale for the betterment of the planet (and their wallets). Plus, who doesn’t jump for joy when a luxurious label is marked at a fraction of the cost? While the rest of the world was joining the consignment shopping bandwagon, Valley residents were already on board with the trend since 1991. For this, Phoenicians have My Sister’s Closet (www.mysisterscloset.com) to thank.

The Store My Sister’s Closet is a recycled designer apparel, shoe and accessory boutique in Phoenix and, more recently, San Diego, California. It’s home to high-end brands like Louis Vuitton, St. John, Prada, Chanel, Armani, Gucci, and more. The best part? My Sister’s Closet sells everything 60 to 95 percent below retail price. And with nearly 500 items trickling in every day, there is always something new for shoppers to discover. What originally started as one, 1,200-square-foot boutique located at the Town and Country Plaza Shopping Center in

Phoenix (which still thrives today), has expanded to 14 total stores – including additional concepts My Sister’s Attic (recycled home furnishings) and Well Suited (men’s recycled apparel) – throughout the Valley and now stretching to The Golden State. “Our store is like a giant candy store for sweet loving adults – you can find anything you need for your home, the man in your life or yourself. Each store is tidy, bright, organized and filled with very affordable treasures,” explains owner Tess Loo.

The Sisters Yes, there are actual sisters behind this brilliant concept – three to be exact. After experiencing one too many dark, dirty and dingy consignment stores, Ann and Jennifer Siner were determined to open one that was cute, clean and current. That was 26 years ago. Today, Jennifer resides in California spearheading the three San Diego boutiques. Siner (Ann) and their other sister, Tess Loo, are the boss ladies at each local Valley location. “I have always been very close with my sisters and to me it is a gift to work with them,” Siner says. “Each of us has a unique set of skills that fits a niche for the store concepts.” Siner, as Loo describes, was always the smart one. Growing up, she would carry a briefcase and Loo donned the most stylish handbag. This is exactly how the sisters operate together as

business partners – Siner, as the CEO and founder, is all about the numbers and operations whereas Loo employs her artistic abilities as the company’s chief fashion officer and director of all things creative. “When we were little girls, Ann and I would play with our Barbies for hours, dressing them in the custom-made Chanelesque suits that our grandmother knitted for us,” Loo reminisces. “It’s kind of what we do now, too – we spend hours with clothing, at our stores and saving animals,” Siner adds.

Community Outreach The sisters, while different in their own respective ways, have a shared passion for community outreach. In 2015, they created their own certified charitable foundation, My Sisters’ Charities (www.mysisterscharities.org), which helps support causes near and dear to both of their hearts. “We donate a generous percentage of profits from My Sister’s Closet, My Sister’s Attic and Well Suited to help people and animals without a voice,” Siner explains. “Our platform consists of abused and orphaned animals and empowering women to stand on their own after abusive relationships.” My Sisters’ Charities Thrift Store (located at 4985 S. Alma School Road in Chandler) is just another component of their foundation. The store sells women’s and men’s clothing, accessories and home furnishings priced at just $1-$10. The items sold there are unsold merchandise taken from their other 11 Valley stores. One hundred percent of the net profits from the thrift store sales go directly back into the community. The sisters have donated to Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center, Fresh Start Women’s Foundation, Banner Alzheimer’s Foundation, Arizona Humane Society, Animal Defense League of Arizona, Friends of Animal Care and Control, and Helping Animals Live On (HALO) Animal Rescue. Loo and Siner have a zeal for protecting wildlife in peril both in the Valley and around the world. In addition to the aforementioned organizations, they have contributed greatly to The Nature Conservancy (a global cause), and Defenders of Wildlife (a national conservation nonprofit). The duo also donates a lot of their time, creativity and positive energy to the community. Together, they have co-chaired countless philanthropic events in the Valley, including the Fresh Start Women’s Organization’s annual gala and the 2015 pARTy at Phoenix Art Museum. Loo has focused her creative powers to design logos, invitations and decor for many events she has been involved with. As far as their event style goes, the sisters hardly spend over $50 on all their gala dresses, courtesy of their cute, clean and always on-trend fashion destination.

Celebrating 20 Years of Compassion with Fashion On Mach 25, the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa will set the stage for Arizona Humane Society’s annual Compassion with Fashion event, which turns 20 this year. Thus, this year's title is Compassion with Fashion XX. Each year, the event rallies more than 1,000 guests, most of whom are philanthropic pet lovers like Loo and Siner, to enjoy a luncheon and fashion show featuring Arizona Humane Society’s adoptable pets.

“Guest can expect auction items unrivaled from other events, fashion that everyone will love and can afford, and pets, pets, pets,” Siner says. The sisters are co-chairing this monumental celebration as well as producing the fashion show for the fourth year in a row. “The room will be bright, bold and happy and everyone will leave with a smile on their face, a skip in their step and joy in their hearts,” Loo elaborates. The pair is excited to introduce 20 fashionista critters – colorful animal characters designed by Loo herself – to this year’s event. The critters (characters include Kitty Purry, Brad Pitbull, Snoop Dawg, Justin Beaver, Kim Barkdashion and more) will appear on the invitation and throughout the venue. There will also be a new program booklet, delicious treats and inspirational videos. Note: bring tissues because you’ll be moved to tears from all the love in the room. “After all ... all we need is love. Sisterly love, puppy love, kitten love, and the love of giving back,” Siner says. To learn more about the Siner and Loo, and the Compassion with Fashion XX event, visit www.azhumane.org. DINNER OF CHAMPIONS Tony La Russa hits a home run for animals everywhere

Three-time World Series-winning Manager and Baseball Hall of Famer Tony La Russa may be best known for his tenures as manager of the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals, as former front office manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks and now as vice president, special assistant to the president of baseball operations for the Boston Red Sox, but he is also known as a hero in the animal welfare world. La Russa and his wife Elaine have always been animal advocates, but one event in 1990 inspired them to take their passion to the next level. “When I was managing the Oakland A’s, a stray tortoiseshell cat ran out on the field in the middle of a game against the Yankees,” La Russa, founder of ARF, recalls. “We stopped play and eventually got the scared girl into our dugout. However, when we went to find an organization to take her, we found out there was not a single no-kill shelter in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area.” Not only did the couple find a safe home for Evie, but the experience also inspired them to open Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) the next year. “Since then, we’ve rescued and rehomed more than 38,000 dogs and cats and started a variety of programs enhancing the bond between people and animals, whether its children, veterans or those in need of the unconditional love of a pet.” La Russa explains. Dinner of Champions, held at fine dining restaurant, Steak 44, welcomes animal lovers to support ARF’s mission and further the nonpronit’s programing. “Our work at ARF has now become a national leader in animal welfare issues, working with organizations across the nation on everything from disaster evacuations to educational programs and advocacy. We’re working on issues every day that affect animals everywhere,” La Russa says.

In its inaugural year, the event sold out, hitting a 200-guest capacity, and this year, La Russa expects the same turnout. “The great part about this event is that it’s so relaxed. It’s truly about good company and great food benefitting programs that save lives.” The evening will begin with cocktail hour and silent auction for guests to mingle and network, and then flow into a seated dinner, including creative vegetarian options. La Russa will also touch on the exciting developments in ARF’s programs.

STRIDE FOR SIGHT An active morning benefitting Foundation for Blind Children

BY GABBY RICHMAN / PHOTO COURTESY OF FOUNDATION FOR BLIND CHILDREN

IF YOU GO… What: Stride for Sight When: March 24, 8 a.m. Where: Arizona Falls in G R Herberger Park, 56th Street and Indian School Road Tickets: $30 until March 20; $35 after Information: www. seeitourway.org

The Foundation for Blind Children (FBC) hosts one of its biggest fundraisers of the year this month. Founded in 1952, now offering three Valley locations, the organization serves as a resource for the blind, visually impaired, and multi-handicapped children, adults and their families of all ages. “Don’t let our name fool you. Our youngest client may have been born this morning and our oldest is currently 104 years old,” explains Steve Pawlowski, director of communications and business development for FBC. The funds raised at Stride for Sight (SFS) will support programs ranging from early intervention to college readiness. “Every step on March 24 brings us one step closer to providing a visually

impaired child and his/her family the support they need. At the Foundation for Blind Children, our kids succeed,” Pawlowski says. The proof is in the pudding. The national unemployment rate among blind adults is 70 percent, but the unemployment rate among FBC graduates is 7 percent. SFS features a timed (competitive or recreational) 5K and a relaxed 1-mile walk, also including food, music, vendors, a silent auction, pet adoptions, team mascots. New enhancements include The Traveling Cup, a gourmet coffee truck, and free chair massages offered by Elements Massage. Another exciting and unique part of the day is an optional blindfold challenge, a way for participants to see how the blind and visually impaired truly live. There will

also be a blindfolded obstacle course for kids before the race begins. “The blindfold challenge allows runners to step up their game by participating blindfolded with a sighted guide,” Pawlowski says. “They can run the entire race blindfolded or trade roles at the halfway mark. Blindfolds and tethers are provided. Both runner and guide need to register separately.” FBC welcomes runners of all sight abilities on the course. “At the Foundation for Blind Children, we believe vision loss is a diagnosis, not a disability,” Pawlowski says. “Although the event will be 100 percent accessible, our visually impaired runners need very little assistance, beyond that of their sighted guides.”

Now OUT

IT’S PATIO SEASON!

The Porch Slightly new to the Arcadia area, this laid-back spot gained popularity overnight. It’s upscale yet relaxed atmosphere is what draws Phoenicians to the gastropub, known for its comfort food, cocktail menu, craft beers and hearty wine list. You’ll often find the doors open to the patio, creating an indoor-outdoor space that pleases. The partially covered patio will make you feel like you’re in a friend’s backyard, complete with swinging benches, retro red accents and comfortable seating, farm tables and lawn games such as giant Jenga. www.porcharcadia.com.

Five places to dine outdoors during this sunny month Phoenix has turned the corner from slightly chilly to sunny and 75 (or warmer!). Many Valley restaurants and bars are built to enhance the city’s weather wonderland, featuring extensive, beautiful patios that are perfect for sipping, socializing and snacking. Head to one of these five places to embrace all that spring has to offer before it gets too hot.

Ingo’s Tasty Food This burger destination’s seating is pretty much all outdoors, making it an ideal restaurant to enjoy your meal in the beautiful weather. The casual ambiance (the partially covered patio is pretty much lined with lush greenery!) paired with the tasty menu options make this place a must-try. Ingo’s draws a crowd for both lunch and dinner, and recently started serving breakfast. While the menu isn’t large, serving a handful of burgers and chicken sandwiches sprinkled with salads and small plates, it makes up for it in flavor. www.ingostastyfood.com.

Windsor Head to the back of this restaurant to see what the hype is all about. The patio is a favorite among Valley residents, with tons of seating and enough shade for those warmer spring days. The decor reads industrial and vintage, with natural walls, metal art and the unforgettable lime green tufted booths. The desert truly shines here as Windsor has potted plants as well as sprinkles of trees and bushes throughout. Stop by for brunch on Sunday to enjoy the homemade cinnamon roll and a $5 bloody mary cart. www.windsoraz.com. Cibo Urban Pizzeria These days, Neapolitan pizza joints aren’t super rare, but finding one with ambiance to match Downtown Phoenix’s Cibo is. Housed in a restored 1913 bungalow, the restaurant wows with its Italian pizzas. In what used to be the front lawn of the house, you’ll find ample seating and tons of gardenlike greenery and charm. CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY

IN EMERALD ISLE STYLE

This month, St. Patrick’s Day parties will pop up around the Valley, toasting Irish culture with plenty of festive fanfare on March 17 and even surrounding the official holiday. Whether you’re of Irish descent or just enjoy a good shindig, celebrate like the Irish do: Drink great (and maybe green) beer, eat hearty pub grub, and dance until your feet give out. To commemorate St. Patrick’s Day, 12 venues invite guests to raise a glass to all things Irish with some lucky, one-time only specials saluting Emerald Isle tradition.

K O’Donnell’s Sports Bar & Grill

Calling all sports fanatics: K O’Donnell’s Sports Bar & Grill is the hangout for you. Sports memorabilia fills every nook and cranny here, from famed jerseys of notable local athletes to college football flags that hang from the ceiling. No matter

where you sit – the patio, bar area or main dining room – you’ll be in perfect view of a high-definition TV (there are more than 60 in the restaurant). This North Scottsdale Irish pub will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. on St. Patrick’s Day. There will be an authentic Irish food menu, live music

on the patio during the day, and a DJ spinning tracks at night, plus a wide selection of Irish beers, cocktails and whiskey. For March Madness lovers, K O’Donnell’s will also have all the games streaming on the TVs. 14850 N. Northsight Blvd., Scottsdale; 480.922.7200; www.kodonnells.com.

Kelly’s at Southbridge

PHOTO COURTESY OF KELLY’S AT SOUTHBRIDGE

Through its large wooden doors, Kelly’s at Southbridge transports guests to Ireland with an elegantly decorated gastropub, complete with sectionals and tufted chairs that create intimate dining nooks. Patrons can also enjoy shareable plates and craft cocktails on the venue’s sprawling patio. The laid-back atmosphere is perfect for celebrating all kinds of events, especially St. Patrick’s Day. The St. Paddy’s celebration this year runs all weekend from March 16 to 18. Green beer will be served every night for $3 and Irish-inspired items like corned beef and bangers and mash will be on the menu. There will also be musical entertainment each night, including a dueling piano band and bagpipers. 7117 E. 6th Ave., Scottsdale; 480.393.3205; www.kellysatsouthbridge.com.

Pattie’s 1st Avenue Lounge

Located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, Pattie’s 1st Avenue Lounge is a longtime local favorite. Inside the nondescript brick building you'll find a come-as-you-are neighborhood bar with pool tables, shuffleboards and even a pingpong table on the partially enclosed patio. The bar offers affordable drinks and also functions as a nightclub on weekends with local DJs getting the party going on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The best part? There is no cover charge. With a name like Pattie’s, you know St. Patrick’s Day is taken very seriously here. The bar will start celebrating at 8 a.m., offering $3 domestic long-neck beers, $5 well drinks, and $2 Jell-O shots (and, yes, they will be green). 7220 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale; 480.990.0103; www.facebook.com/patties1stave.

Thirsty Lion Gastropub & Grill

With its prime location at Scottsdale Fashion Square, Thirsty Lion is an ideal spot to unwind after some serious retail therapy. This elevated gastropub offers seasonal menus, craft beer and cider, and a selection of handcrafted cocktails. Equipped with a private event space, a patio and catering, Thirsty Lion also welcomes patrons in for special occasions like business lunches, birthdays and holiday parties while celebrating one of its own every year. Each March near St. Patrick’s Day, Thirsty Lion hosts a fundraiser where participants pledge to shave their heads for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-based charity that supports childhood cancer research. The fundraiser takes place at the Tempe location on March 17 from 1 to 3 p.m., but all three locations will have a special menu in honor of St. Patrick’s Day with items like bacon cheddar potato cakes, Scotch eggs, and an Irish beer flight. The menu is available March 1-18. Multiple locations; www.thirstyliongastropub.com.

Rosie McCaffrey’s Irish Pub

Owner Seamus McCaffrey and his family bring the flavors and hospitality of their Irish home to Valley residents with three authentic Dublin pubs. In 2002, Rosie McCaffrey’s, the youngest of the bunch, opened its doors. The pub brings a piece of the Emerald Isle to Camelback Road by serving traditional pub fare like its award-winning fish and chips, streaming live Glasgow Celtics football matches, and, of course, serving pints of Guinness poured correctly (a two-step process). Rosie’s Backside, an enclosed back patio, accommodates 50 guests and also offers catering and bar services for private events and business functions. On March 17, St. Patrick’s Day festivities

Seamus McCaffrey’s Irish Pub & Restaurant

Seamus McCaffrey’s and Rosie McCaffrey’s were once under the same ownership. Today, Seamus McCaffrey’s Irish Pub & Restaurant runs separately. Despite the switch in leadership, the pub remains true to its original Irish roots. TV sets adorn every corner of the pub to ensure optimal views of sports games. Come in Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and enjoy happy hour discounts like a 20-ounce Guinness draft for $5 and $4.50 well drinks and house wines. Seamus McCaffrey’s will close down and take over 1st through Central avenues for its St. Patrick’s Day Party on March 17. There will be food trucks, three live bands, and several other fun promotions and drink specials. Entry to Seamus McCaffrey’s St. Patrick’s Day Party is $10 per person and is cash only. 18 W. Clancy’s Irish Pub

Clancy’s Irish Pub gives Phoenicians a taste of Midwestern mentality. Originally established in 1977 in Omaha, Nebraska, the venue’s relaxing atmosphere and welcoming staff is meant to make every patron feel at home. Clancy’s is happy to turn on Arizona Cardinals games for natives, but its loyalty lies with the Midwest as it is the official venue for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Green Bay Packers. Come in early on St. Patrick’s Day and get free green eggs and ham with the purchase of a beverage. There will be live music throughout the day, including performers Trevor Scott, Harley Harkins and Stompbox. Those who stop by March 16-17 wearing Irishinspired garb (translation: lots of green) have a chance to win Clancy’s best-dressed contest. The pub opens at 6 a.m. on St. Patrick’s Day. 4432 N. Miller Road, Scottsdale; 480.990.8797; www.clancyspubscottsdale.com.

Skeptical Chymist

This apothecary-themed pub is the namesake of the 1661 book The Skeptical Chymist written by Irishman Robert Boyle, who was deemed the founder of modern chemistry. With wooden accents, antique spice cabinets, and medicine bottles and jugs scattered throughout the space, the bar pays homage to old pharmacies that doubled as pubs back in the day. The majority of the venue’s decor hails from Ireland, giving guests a true taste of an old-school Irish pub. This St. Patrick’s Day, an Irish breakfast will start at 8 a.m., and there will be live Irish music throughout the day from 11 a.m. to midnight. Plus, drink vendors will be on site to dole out special promos and giveaways. After 11 a.m. there is a $10 cover charge. 15689 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; 480.609.8677; www.skepticalchymist.com.

The Rose & Crown Pub

There is only one locally owned joint that’s been awarded Best English Pub six times in the Valley, and it’s The Rose & Crown. Located in a historic Victorian-style bungalow, the pub sits in one of Phoenix’s oldest standing neighborhoods, Heritage Square. Adding to the venue’s charm is British-inspired artwork hanging from the walls

and a friendly team pouring more than 50 local and imported beers. The quaint pub also doubles as an American bar with Yankee favorites like foosball, pool, cornhole and several high-definition TVs for watching sports. In keeping with the pub’s endearing ways, there will be a small (free) block party surrounding the area on St. Patrick’s Day, with festivities going from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Attendees can anticipate live music, DJs and classic Irish dishes like Guinness stew and corned beef and cabbage. 628 E. Adams St., Phoenix; 602.256.0223; www.theroseandcrownaz.com. Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery
A kilt is a traditional garment found in Celtic nations, namely Scotland. While Arizona is not exactly a Celtic nation, it does indeed celebrate the pleated skirt at Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery. Home to more than 30 beers on tap and a menu of bar favorites like mozzarella sticks, chicken wings and a good ol’ burger, Tilted Kilt also offers daily specials and plenty of fanfare for Arizona sports teams. Though, perhaps it is St. Patrick’s Day that’s Tilted Kilt’s favorite day of the year – through March 31, they will offer an Irish hooley (party) menu, paying homage to the pub’s Irish origins. Plus, they usually have a celebration with live music and green beer. Two locations; www.tiltedkilt.com.

Four Peaks Grill & Tap

Thanks to Four Peaks Brewery, craft beer in the Southwest has become a force to be reckoned with. Four Peaks’ Scottsdale pub boasts a laid-back atmosphere with a mezzanine balcony that accommodates 40 guests, a menu of pub favorites, and, of course, beer tastings. All of the brews are on tap, ensuring a fresh pour each and every time. Don’t miss out on this year’s St. Patrick’s Day happenings, which kick off bright and early at 7 a.m. The first 50 guests will receive a free commemorative shirt as a keepsake. Don’t fret if you’re guest No. 51, though, because shirts and tank tops will be available for purchase throughout the day for $20. Irish breakfast staples will be served until 10 a.m., with other traditional fare, including corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie and Irish stew, dished out all day. To drink, enjoy $4 pints, $6 Irish car bombs, and Irish coffee. 15745 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; 480.991.1795; www.fourpeaks.com.

Harold’s Cave Creek Corral

Itching to get a taste of the wild, Wild West? Since 1935, Harold’s has provided an authentic Western saloon experience; even celebrities and cowboys were known to frequent this Cave Creek hangout. In fact, the venue set the scene for big screen films like Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins and Electra Glide in Blue. Harold’s keeps the charm of the Western spirit alive with free country dance lessons every Friday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. But, on March 17, lasso the troops and head over to Harold’s for one spectacular St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The day’s music agenda includes the Shelia McGuire Band, Karen O, and Crown Kings. Get your Irish fix with traditional items like corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips, and shepherd’s pie – plus pints of green beer, a shot of Jameson chased with Smithwick’s Irish Ale, Irish car bombs and Guinness. This may be an Irish celebration, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave your cowboy or cowgirl hat at home! 6895 E. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek; 480.488.1906; www.haroldscorral.com.

Luxe HAUTE PROPERTY

SPOTLIGHT: NOVELLA AT ARCADIA BY GABBY RICHMAN

66

Uptown March '18

The trendy Phoenix neighborhood of Arcadia is in an ideal location, with access to everything including vibrant restaurants and bars, classic and unique shopping spots, hiking and climbing trails, and plush landscaping. Also, it’s just a short drive from the cultural offerings of Downtown Phoenix and Old Town Scottsdale. It’s natural that this area, formerly occupied by citrus groves, is one of the top places to live in the city. While the neighborhood streets are lined with older homes rich in character and beautiful new builds, Arcadia’s homes are definitely on the pricier side. Enter: luxury townhome living. Novella at Arcadia recently opened, giving residents access to all the area has to offer without the down payment. Owned by True Craft Residential and professionally managed by Alliance Residential Company, the 31-unit community offers single-family townhomes for rent. There are two floor plans offered: The Campbell at 1,781 square feet, featuring three bedrooms, 3 1/2 bathrooms, and The Arcadian at 1,756 square feet, boasting three bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms. Just because you’re not buying an Arcadia abode doesn’t mean you’ll be skimping on style or luxury. Each unit is complete with features to rival the single-family homes in the area, including attached two-car garages, quartz countertops, Shaker wood cabinets, and Samsung appliance packages which include a fullsize washer and dryer. Additionally, you’ll find the open concept living space to have 9- to 11-foot ceilings, glass sliding doors and expansive patios. The bathrooms present a modern design with oversized tile showers, contemporary bath fixtures and elegant lighting fixtures. Outside of your space, you’ll have access to community amenities such as a heated pool and spa, fire pits and community barbecues. There is also ample guest parking. The Campbell floor plan starts at $2,975 and The Arcadian begins at $3,100. For more information, visit www.novellaatarcadia.com.

Luxe WHEELS

2018 MERCEDES-BENZ AMG C63 S CABRIOLET An exceptional vehicle inside and out BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $81,500

On a weekly basis, a press vehicle is dropped off at my house, and the previous vehicle is picked up. They range from pickup trucks to economy cars, electric vehicles, SUVs and so forth. But a few times each year, something really special arrives that I don’t want to give back. Such was the case with the Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 S Cabriolet. With 503 horsepower, 516 pound-feet of torque, and a seven-speed automatic transmission, the hand-built 4.0-liter, V-8 bi-turbo engine is the same used in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, E-Class sedan, and other C-Class models. Add in AMG forged cross-spoke wheels – 19 inches up front and 20 in the back – and one can reach zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. It’s brought to a smooth but certain stop by large 15.8-inch ceramic brakes with red-painted brake calipers. An optional performance exhaust system with flap control varies the exhaust notes depending on the selected transmission mode. This produces awesome, throaty growls, popping and cracks. It isn’t loud enough to wake the neighbors, but the effect is delicious. A Dynamic Select driving control

menu on the center console enables the driver to customize the C63’s performance from the plush “Comfort” mode to the aggressive “Sport” or the distinct “Sport+” and “RACE” modes. All this goodness is wrapped in a sleek, sophisticated selection of colors with a drop-top. This car is the bomb. Inside, the C63 S has some of the best bucket seats I’ve ever occupied. Leather seats and trim, brushed aluminum precision switchgear, and gorgeous turbine-styled air vents – all materials are top-rate with exceptional build quality. Although, I’m not in love with the placement of the center LCD screen, which looks like it was added after the car had been completely built. Without question, this car is a beast. But, for such a high-performance vehicle, it’s actually quite friendly, easy to drive, and even thoughtful. That’s because, while cars keep getting faster, the people who buy them are not necessarily becoming better drivers. So what you get with the AMG C63 S is a very track-capable car that’s also perfect for daily driving. Just be prepared to open your wallet.

Price as tested: $100,235 Engine: 4.0-L bi-turbocharged V-8 Horsepower: 503 Fuel economy: 17/22 mpg city/ highway Seating: 4 Fab features: Incredible acceleration and braking Sinister exhaust notes Intoxicating to drive

Taste DRINK

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

A TASTE OF SPRING Expand your palate with unique Arizona-made white wines

Spring has sprung – and so have Arizona’s vines. We sipped and sampled our way around the state to unearth some of its most interesting white wine varietals.

If you like classic chardonnay, try … Page Springs Cellars 2015 Colibri Roussanne, $26 Many people direct “oaked” (aka more traditional) chardonnay sippers to sample Arizona viogniers, but these roussanne grapes, which grow in the shadow of the mighty Chiricahua Mountains of Southern Arizona, are silky and rich with hints of clean springtime flavors like apricot, lemon and peach. Like a chardonnay, there is a creamy feel to the wine, but the dry finish makes it a little lighter and airier.

If you like unoaked chardonnay, try … Coronado Vineyards 2016 Dry Riesling, $16 In recent years, unoaked chardonnay – which is aged in stainless steel versus oak barrels for a less buttery result – has become all the rage. This riesling is similarly aged in stainless steel, resulting in a lemony yellow color with hints of apricot, apple and honeydew. Its subtle sweetness doesn’t overpower, making it more akin to an unoaked chardonnay than a traditional, sweet German riesling.

If you like pinot grigio, try … Kief-Joshua 2015 Chenin Blanc, $25 Light, bright and a bit fruity, this delightful alternative to pinot grigio always turns heads. It has a medium acidity, ideal for white wine lovers who aren’t quite ready for the full crispness of a sauvignon blanc, yet want a little more zest than a basic pinot.

If you like sauvignon blanc, try … Pillsbury Wine Company 2016 Chardonnay, $24 This wine, which earned a Gold Medal from the San Francisco Chronicle, is aged for six months in neutral oak, so, like the dry riesling, it isn’t buttery. Instead, there are clear notes of florals, shortbread and all sorts of citrus, a favorite for sauvignon blanc lovers. Also like sauvignon blanc – and spring itself – it’s crisp, clean and loves to be chilled.

If you like a white blend, try … Bodega Pierce 2016 Pandora, $18 This blend features the award-winning winemaker’s estate pinot gris, sauvignon blanc and Malvasia Bianca in every delightful sip. Together, these grapes combine to give the drinker the sweet crispness of a pear and floral notes of both lilies and dreamy hibiscus.

If you like sparkling white wine, try ... Aridus 2016 Sparkling Malvasia, $47.25 This particular effervescent sparkling wine features intense aromas of peach, tangerine and honeysuckle. The palate is predominantly citrusy – especially with orange blossom – and has a lingering floral finish. There are also some surprising notes on the second and third sips of ginger and spice.

The casual restaurant offers a handcrafted, farm-to-table dining experience, focusing on locally sourced ingredients. The menu has a fair amount of Asian flair. Take, for instance, the Morning Bibimbap Bowl ($8.50), one of the most popular items served. It’s a healthy interpretation of the classic Korean dish, which typically includes white rice, pickled and satueed veggies and eggs all presented in a hot stoneware bowl. Chestnut’s version – which has a bit of spice from the Sriracha brushed on the bottom – consists of sauteed kale and quinoa and is topped with two poached eggs. This simple, fresh selection allows diners to enjoy as is or modify and make it their own by adding extra protein or toppings. Served during business hours, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. 4350 E. THE CURE

Farm & Craft combines the best of both worlds for a tasty, yet healthy, treat

BY GABBY RICHMAN / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

New to The Colony this month, Farm & Craft is bringing a healthy and sustainable menu of food and drinks in a modern farm, contemporary space. During the day, you’ll find a fast-casual concept and at night, the spot turns into a full-service restaurant. Farm & Craft is turning their focus to something you might not typically find at a health-focused eatery – cocktails. The spot offers organic spirits, craft beer and wine, and a unique cocktail menu, boasting options made with kombucha and cold-pressed juice, bringing a whole new meaning to feel good fresh ingredients. “It is a natural fit for us and the healthy lifestyle nature of our restaurant,” explains Farm & Craft President Darryl Cuilla of fusing their healthy approach with alcoholic beverages. “We feel that no one is really embracing the fresh-pressed juice and spirit cocktail niche like we have.” The restaurant’s team spent years (their Old Town Scottsdale location opened in 2016) concocting different juices with spirits to find the perfect mixtures. One particular standout is The Cure ($12), pairing two unlikely ingredients: vodka and kale. Surprisingly, it’s a match made in heaven. With a name like The Cure, it’s natural to wonder, what exactly is this sipper going to cure? “The unique properties of the drink are to heal (kale juice is heavy in antioxidants), sooth (coconut water is high in potassium) and recover (cucumber eases a hangover) we have personally experimented with this and it worked for us,” Cuilla says. The bright green creation tastes as refreshing as it looks, with sweet and sour notes, including hints of kale and cucumber, with a slight coconut finish. It’s made with Square One Botanical Vodka, fresh cucumber and kale juice, coconut water, lime juice and Organic Agave Nectar. Farm & Craft, 5538 North 7th St., Phoenix; www.ilovefarmandcraft.com.

CUISINE

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Damian Del Castillo of Pomegranate Cafe Damian Del Castillo began his culinary career as a dishwasher, working his way up over the years. Now, he is the chef of the Phoenix and Ahwatukee locations of Pomegranate Cafe, known for its vegetarian and vegan options.

BY GABBY RICHMAN / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

When did you know you wanted to be a chef? I always knew I wanted to be a cook – It’s in my blood. My family has always been dedicated to that line of work. My great-grandmother was a professional cook, and a few of my uncles cook very well, not professionally, but definitely have “the flavor.”

To you, food is…. A little mysterious, a necessity, a knowledge.

The one ingredient you probably use most is: Passion.

When you’re not cooking, where would we find you? When I’m not cooking you will find me with my family.

What food is your guilty pleasure? Pizza with ketchup.

Favorite food memory: My favorite food memory is when I went to one of the Pujol restaurants and I tried a dish called Mole Madre which had been cooking for over a year, and that mole reminded me of my mother’s mole.

Most adventurous food you’ve tried or cooked: I haven’t tried anything that has scared me yet!

What is your biggest challenge when making items vegan or vegetarian? The more I work with different ingredients, especially vegetables, the more I learn and expand my tools in making dishes. I continue to learn each day.

How do you make dishes diet restriction-friendly (vegan or vegetarian) without compromising flavor? My foundation is always Mexican cuisine, which features mostly vegetables. When prepared correctly, we can bring out a lot of flavor from the vegetables for the dishes. For example, roasting vegetables brings out unique flavors from the juices and oils that are released in the process.

Anything new on the horizon for Pomegranate Cafe’s menu this season? For the spring, we will have a new menu for the bar with interesting tapas-style dishes that are 100 percent vegan.

End NEW IN TOWN

DOUBLE DINING

Two chefs unite to offer individual concepts under one roof

BY NICOLE ROMANOFF / PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY

Two Phoenix restaurants have come together in a unique “space share” concept that gives food lovers two dining experiences in one location. The idea is a collaboration between chef Jennifer Russo of the Market Restaurant + Bar and chef David Duarte of Finestre Modern Gastronomy. Russo opened the Market in 2014 as an extension of Jennifer’s Catering, but to keep up with the demands of the catering business, the space sat empty Sunday through Tuesday. So, when Duarte was looking to open his own restaurant, she suggested using her closed location and bypassing some of the headaches that come with opening a restaurant. In February, Duarte unveiled Finestre Modern Gastronomy inside the Market venue. The retired firefighter and paramedic brings high-end food from his European Michelin-star restaurant training home to his neighborhood. Finestre, which means “window” in Italian, offers five-, seven-, and nine-course tasting menus that provide a

82

Uptown March '18

window into the culinary world. Duarte also uses modern gastronomy to bring out-of-the-box cooking concepts, such as cooking with nitrogen or creating delectable foams and gels, tableside at a cost that is more accessible thanks to the shared space. “We’re going to be doing some very unique stuff and creating food that nobody in Arizona has tasted,” Duarte elaborates. One of those unique offerings is Japanese Satsuma A5 Wagyu, which Duarte describes as the best beef in the world, including specialty cuts not available everywhere. Duarte also is excited by the fivecourse vegetarian selection and is confident it’s something even meat eaters will enjoy. At the Market, Russo continues to dish out a fun, fresh twist on the classics, modernizing dishes in a playful way that keeps the food comfortable and recognizable. The shared space has a casual yet elegant feel. Exposed ducts, brick walls, and red, metal stools are softened by the

sparkle of chandeliers and the warmth of honey-hued wood tables. Doors leading to the front and side patios give the space an open-air feeling, and a large kitchen window allows food lovers to watch and interact with the chefs. Regardless of who is in the kitchen, diners can expect an inviting, energetic vibe. “It’s not stuffy,” explains Russo of the atmosphere. “You can come in on your way to the ballet or coming from a workout. We want everyone to feel welcome.” Both chefs share a passion for supporting the community by offering seasonal menus, buying from small, local vendors, and engaging with guests. Another perk of the partnership is shared inventory, which helps keep prices down and allows for more specialty items, including a reserve list of fun and intriguing wines. “I’m truly blessed and honored that I’m able to do this,” Duarte says. Thanks to the shared schedule, Duarte is using his free time to host dinners with chefs across the country.
