While I’m not exactly an expert, I do absolutely love home design – I enjoy looking at Pinterest, browsing online stores and aimlessly walking the aisles of decor shops. I’ve even slowly been redoing the decor in my own home and it can be a tricky process. The people and homes we’re highlighting this month in our first-ever Home Design Issue have it all down. From beautiful properties on Camelback Mountain (check out the Sacks residence on the cover!), to desert dwellings located north, we are showcasing some pretty unique, luxe homes and their owners. On page 27, they share their home design inspiration, favorite items and rooms in their houses and more. Going with the theme of picturesque places, we rounded up some of the most Instagrammable restaurants in Phoenix on page 41 that’ll have your followers double-clicking in no time. This month we were also influenced by Earth Day, which is April 22. On page 49, you’ll find a page dedicated to biophilia decor, which means bringing the outside environment indoors, and on page 47, you’ll see a pair of stylish earrings made from sustainably sourced materials. We also fit some springtime finds in this month, including the most popular shoe trends of the season (page 50) and the best IPAs and sours to sip during the day by the pool or in the evening on the patio (page 62). Lastly, we have the scoop on a new unique Downtown Phoenix bar that is making waves across the Valley. If you haven’t heard of Little Rituals yet, flip to page 74 then go give their cocktails a try. Cheers! Best, Gabby Leighton Editor-in-Chief gabby@richmanmediagroup.com Find our magazine on Facebook!

GOING NATURAL
Sisters Alicia Kompar and Marisa Kompar team up to create a holistic product line
For sisters Alicia Kompar and Marisa Kompar, inspiring others and living clean are two values they practice every day in their personal and professional lives. Together, they started m+a naturals, an online store dedicated to handmade natural products for the face, body, and home. Utilizing essential oils, minerals and
other earthy ingredients, the business partners created m+a naturals to inspire holistic living at a reasonable price point. Although the sisters started their journey into entrepreneurship differently, they came together to inspire and fill others with hope and love using their passion, creativity and optimism.

Pulse UP CLOSE On the flip side, Marisa, a single mom of two fun loving boys, relocated to Phoenix to start a new chapter, striving to be her own boss. Being present for her kids is one of the most important parts of her life and after losing her husband unexpectedly in a tragic accident, Marisa turned to yoga and meditation to help her focus on moving forward through life. “After [I began practicing] yoga, my life opened up. I felt love, I was love, and I was in love. My late husband’s love for us and his passion led me to pursue m+a naturals; he too was a small business owner and showed great passion and dedication” she says. While talking one rainy afternoon as the two made a wreath for the front door, Marisa realized how passionate Alicia was about crafts. After a brief discussion about hand making bath bombs and infusing them with eucalyptus, m+a naturals was born. Marisa needed to calm her mind, focus on something creative and crafting helped. The decision to turn their passion for crafting into a business was the first move toward becoming entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneur Life
Combining Passions Three days a week, Alicia works as a registered nurse on a neuro and trauma unit while the other four days she describes herself as a “hardcore crafter.” “I have always known I wanted to be a registered nurse, but there’s something that they never teach you in school – being a nurse is physically and mentally draining,” she says. “When I first started my career path, I didn’t know how to find an outlet. After figuring out that I wasn’t the next Picasso, I started creating our products.”

For Marisa, managing the role of being a single parent is one of her most significant accomplishments today. “Taking the leap into the unknown can be fearful for most, but I was truly following my passion, and [my late husband] Richard is my inspiration,” Marisa says. Another inspiration for the siblings is Marisa’s children as they aim to show the kids that they don’t need to follow the traditional route to be successful. “[My late husband had] a passion for anti-mainstream ideologies, which inspired me to pass that same mentality onto our boys. I now embody part of his being through m+a naturals,” Marisa says. The company aims to help people from various socio-economic backgrounds to have access to natural and clean products at a sensible cost. The majority of home and body products contain known toxins and the Kompar sisters are focused on creating a line of goods free of chemicals that appeal to all budgets. “We wanted to create something anti-mainstream and healthier for the environment,” Alicia explains. Connecting with other businesses is also important to the dynamic duo. They love to collaborate with small businesses throughout the Valley and are part of a tightknit community of artisans that produce their goods in small batches. Participating in local markets is one of their favorite things to do. “It’s an amazing experience; we get to share what we love and meet so many people,” Marisa says. Another important aspect of m+a naturals is giving back. Every month, The Churchill collaborates with local nonprofits and they have teamed with Gather, a local women-owned business, where proceeds from m+a products sold there are donated to the organization. The sisters are currently working on building collaborations with other local businesses and extending their product line. For more information, visit www.manaturalsco.com.

A WEARABLE CAUSE Kay McDonald creates purpose-drive jewelry with Charity Charms
BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
For purpose-driven jewelry, Kay McDonald is your gal. After a long tenure in fashion merchandising, first as a retail buyer then a vice president of product development, she founded Regalia, an accessory business, in 1989. Little did she know that Regalia would pave the way for an impactful fashion enterprise. “While I owned Regalia, we did events that benefitted nonprofits through the sale of our jewelry line. It dawned on me that I could create a custom line of jewelry for charities at a wholesale price and they could sell [my jewelry] at their events and venues, keeping 100 percent of the profits,” she says. McDonald launched Charity Charms, meaningful-meets-fashionable jewelry that defines nonprofits’ brands while helping them raise awareness and funds. “Charms have the power to tell a story, connect people in a significant way and build a legacy of love,” McDonald explains. The company creates a custom charm from an organization’s logo, which can adorn Charity Charms’ gamut of accessories, like bracelets or keyrings. All materials are ethically and environmentally sourced from recycled pewter and sterling silver. “It warms my heart to see women all over the world wearing charms for the charities they support.” From nonprofits to businesses to schools, Charity Charms’ clientele is expansive and always growing. Some of the charming customers include Florence Crittenton, ChildHelp, Ronald McDonald House and The Salvation Army. McDonald’s empire turns 15 this year. To celebrate, she revamped the company’s website to include testimonials and inspired examples and ideas. Embracelets, a sterling silver bangle, was also introduced to the product line. And in the coming months, McDonald will unveil her first book, Charms as a Food for Good. So exactly how many charms does this charmmaker have? Over one million, which includes all of the ones she’s made for clients, charms inherited from her grandmother and charms from her travels as a fashion maven. “The conversations I have with people that need help, the connections I make with people so passionate about what they do and the impact I feel from people dedicated to making a difference...that’s what brings meaning and fulfillment to my work,” she says.

LEAP OF FAITH
Entrepreneur Trisha Bruner has a passion for performing arts and helping others
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
It’s not often that a background of professional dancing lends itself to trauma, couples and addiction therapy but Trisha Bruner is breaking the mold with a resume full of celebrity backup dancing gigs and a master’s degree in advanced studies in marriage and family. When she’s not practicing individual and couples therapy at her Central Phoenix practice, Life in Motion, you can often find the ex-dancer tending to her passions of empowering women and helping others. Bruner knew she wanted to blend her professional background with her passion for the arts into her private practice. “Life in Motion is about moving through pain into purpose,” she says. “The logo is of an ink blot dancer, symbolizing that life and relationships are often a dance that we continue to adapt and move through. Sometimes we can get stuck, but pain can be a motivator to help people to change and break generational patterns.” After receiving her bachelor’s degree in dance from the University of Arizona, she returned to her hometown of Chicago and continued to dance before moving to the dancing mecca that is New York City. At the height of her dance career she toured nationally with the Radiocity Rockettes, was contracted with Cirque du Soleil, danced with contemporary companies in both Chicago and New York City, and was a backup dancer for artists such as Beyoncé, Elvis Costello, Rod Stewart, and Kimberly Locke. After realizing that her purpose in life lied outside of gigs and auditions, Bruner moved across the country and landed in Phoenix where she worked for various mental health professional before taking the leap to branch out and establish Life in Motion. Above all, she enjoys being an accomplished entrepreneur and finds inspiration from people that have the courage to be vulnerable and share their journey with others. “I am inspired when people let themselves be seen/heard and are unapologetically/authentically themselves,” Bruner says. “I never thought I would own my own business, so opening up my own private practice was a very significant accomplishment in my life.”

Whether that be weight loss, increased productivity and memory function, higher libido, or higher energy levels, among other benefits. Q: HOW DO YOU HELP PEOPLE RE-BALANCE THEIR HORMONES? SQ: I take a personal approach with each of my patients. I combine what the blood sample results tell me with what each patient’s individual concerns and symptoms may be. This helps me to create a personalized plan for optimal quality of life. Everyone is unique, therefore my treatment plans are unique and are individually catered. Q: MANY OF US HAVE A BUSY SCHEDULE, WHAT’S THE PROCESS LIKE? SQ: I always cater to patients and their schedules. After the initial appointment, many opt for my Concierge Medical Provider Program. Clients have access to my personal cell number and email for any and all questions that come up through the course of treatment, whether it’s during the week or on the weekend. With this individualized program, all office visits are included. Q: HOW SOON CAN SOMEONE EXPECT RESULTS? SQ: Results are always seen; however, it’s different for everyone. Some patients see a change right away while others are a work-in-progress. This isn’t a cookie cutter program; I work with individuals no matter how long it takes to obtain the desired outcome.
HOW TO GET YOUR ZEST BACK AND LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE!

Thankfully, bioidentical hormone replacement specialist, Sarah Quinn, Nurse Practitioner and owner of Arcadia Wellness Center in Arcadia/Biltmore is here to help.
person experiences chronic stress, messages get mixed up and cause havoc to the entire body. Women going through menopause and men going through andropause tend to have an imbalance as well.
Q: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT OUR HORMONES BE BALANCED? SARAH QUINN: After 30 we see a hormone decline in both men and women, but it can happen even in their late-20’s. When hormones are imbalanced, a person experiences a wide range of health problems including fatigue, weight gain, depression, low libido, and much more. Decreased hormones are responsible for serious medical problems, too, like heart disease, metabolic syndrome, and even Alzheimer’s. Balanced hormones offer a better quality of life so a person can handle their daily stresses with ease.
Q: HOW DOES OUR ENVIRONMENT PLAY A ROLE IN OUR HORMONE LEVELS? SQ: There are a number of hormone-depleting toxins and pollutants in our environment. Foods with higher estrogen, like soy and tofu, contribute to hormonal imbalance. As do meats containing added hormones. Balancing hormones gives our bodies more energy, and with that comes the ability to burn fat and build new muscle. People are also able to have better memory and feel more emotionally balanced.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME CAUSES OF HORMONE IMBALANCE IN BOTH MEN AND WOMEN? SQ: Stress plays a huge role. I often see men and women who are in their 30’s and 40’s dealing with a lot of daily stresses and work stress. Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers, so when a
Q: WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY? SQ: Clients get their zest back! Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy helps with anxiety, depression, and sleep troubles. It also helps people get off cholesterol medications, blood pressure, and diabetes medications. Outcomes are specific to each individual, but everyone notices a change for the better.
Q: IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO AT HOME TO HELP BALANCE OUR HORMONES? SQ: Taking care of yourself by eating healthy, getting quality sleep, and reducing stress are great places to start. But you can still experience a hormone deficiency, and that’s where I come in. Q: WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER PROVIDERS PROVIDING HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY? SQ: Life should be enjoyable and I truly care about giving my clients their quality of life back. I have 9 years of extensive experience in treating hormone imbalances, and stay up-to-date with the latest research and technology. Because I’m available and accessible to address issues right away, I’m able to adjust treatment plans as needed. My one-of-a-kind care plan approach is why my patients have the best results. KEEPING IT LOCAL
Ziggy Goldfarb has a love for T-shirts and supporting the Phoenix community BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
When he’s not sporting white overalls and purple converse sneakers, Ziggy Goldfarb has perfected his business casual-meets-streetwear look for his career in sales (with a side of pasta making!) at the Hayden Flour Mill. Most days, Goldfarb styles his self-described “dadbod” in pastels and trendy T-shirts. The busy father, husband and subject of the children’s book titled Ziggy’s Perfect Pickles shares, “I don’t even have enough time to wear all of my T-shirts but they are a way to share my love of art or to show my support for my friends’ businesses and projects.” To take his look from day to night, Goldfarb simply puts on an apron and gets in kitchen to cook for his family. With a passion for cooking, art and color, Goldfarb often heads to Phoenix Flea to meet designers and shop local vendors for clothing and other goods. He turns to social media for a dose of wardrobe inspiration, but also takes notice of what’s trending on the people around him. “The J.Crew mens (@jcrewmens) Instagram account is great as the styles are easily purchased from their online store,” Goldfarb says. “I find styles are much more achievable when I see a normal person wearing them as opposed to a celebrity.”
What is one of your favorite brands? I’ve been a fan of Lucky Jeans for years ever since I randomly walked into their old store on Mill Avenue. They are comfortable and fit great. Do you consider yourself a trendsetter? I don’t envision setting any trends, but any day that my wife doesn’t laugh at my outfit is a good day. What is your most prized possession in your closet? My wedding ring. It goes with every outfit! Oh, also my Pretty Snake cat sweater with 3D eyes.

HER STYLE
AFI LIKE TAFFY
Style advisor Afi Maita’s personality and wardrobe are equally vibrant
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
Born in West Africa and raised in North London, happy-go-lucky Saks Fifth Avenue style advisor Afi Maita dresses herself in colorful, feminine and timeless ensembles that reflect her bright personality. Maita attributes her flair for fashion to her father Musa, thanks to his global travel schedule and fondness for custom suits from London and Milan. She grew up practicing her style skills on her siblings before finding a career in the fashion industry. As Maita grew up, her style evolved over time, now dressing solely for her curvaceous, athletic body. She was inspired to embrace her body through her style by two powerful black women she looks up to who “own their curves” — Beyoncé and Serena Williams. With amazing brands at her fingertips daily, the vivacious trendsetter’s favorites include Gucci, Hermes and Chanel and she swears by accessorizing with good shape wear to set a strong foundation. “From jewelry to a belt and handbag, accessorizing is like icing on a cake,” Maita says. “Fashion is what you buy, style is what you do with it!” As a Type 1 diabetic, Maita travels with a plethora of diabetic supplies. Of course, she packs them into a fashionable burgundy Givenchy bag (a gift from her father) because as a stylist, she can even make diabetes look good.
What is your No. 1 style tip? Dress for yourself and no one else. How does your style differ at work? You’ll see me with fully applied makeup wearing my bright, bold and feminine outfits during workdays. On days off I go makeup free and wear athleisure wear with a baseball cap, and my favorite Quay Australia Shades. What do you wear for a night out? I take more risks under the blanket of night with more fitted clothing like a body suit with jeans, a blazer/duster and a belt or tighter dresses. I go for sleeker lines and more sparkle.

ARE YOU A GOOD CAR “PARENT?”
YOUR CAR IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF YOUR FAMILY LIFE. HERE, AN EXPERT WEIGHS IN ON HOW TO TREAT IT RIGHT.
C
ars can feel like part of the family. They’re our constant shuttling companions, shipping kids and pets to school and appointments, and literally making family road trips possible. And just as we look after the health of our families, we also have an obligation as car owners to keep our cars in good shape so that we can keep depending on them. A vehicle that is has been taken care of will reward you with longevity and reliability. Luckily, just a few simple habits can ensure the health of our vehicles. We asked Shahe Koulloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, for his best advice on making sure we don’t neglect our car “parenting” duties. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. “The most potentially expensive car maintenance mistake you can make is letting the little things that do not seem important slide when you’re busy or stressed, like oil or fluid leaks and smells like burning rubber or carpet,” Shahe says. Be aware of your car, get out and touch and smell. Call your repair shop and ask questions to understand what may potentially happen if you ignore it. KEEP YOUR SERVICE/REPAIR RECORDS IN YOUR CAR. Hold onto all receipts, invoices, and recommendations from your auto shop. These will come in handy if you’re advised that it needs repairs, as you can refer to your file to see if you’re already had it done. It also serves as a great tool to showcase value if ever plan to sell the vehicle, and a great reference to prove how well you took care of it. Not to mention quick access to see if your last repair is still under warranty. PAY ATTENTION. Sure, your favorite song is on and you’re singing like the next runner up for “American Idol,” but make sure you’re not missing warning lights, which can indicate engine problems, brake failure, and/or overheating malfunctions. This is your vehicle’s way of communicating with you that it needs help.
START A RELATIONSHIP. Don’t wait until you have a breakdown to find a repair shop. Start early with simple oil change services to find a repair facility that communicates with you openly and honestly. Make sure you tell the whole story: the more information you give, the better (and most likely cheaper) the diagnosis. And most importantly, don’t feel intimidated. “Always feel free to ask questions about your vehicle’s overall health and service,” Shahe emphasizes, adding that a truly professional mechanic will welcome and encourage inquiries. “It’s only dangerous if you don’t know!” DOT THE I’s AND CROSS THE T’s. Getting an affordable estimate is one thing, but what about the quality of the parts and warranty? It’s easy to be reeled in by a cheap price, but if the repair has no parts and labor warranty, what good are the savings? Make sure to ask whether your warranty covers parts and labor, and if the parts are new, used, or aftermarket. The better informed you, are the better you can grow into having an open dialogue and trusting relationship. IT’S OKAY TO DO IT YOURSELF—(Correctly!). You may not be a mechanic; however, you can be empowered by taking on the simplest maintenance repairs yourself, like replacing the engine air filter, the wiper blades, your battery, even your cabin filter. And believe it or not, you can learn this directly from your mechanic. “An honest repair shop will actually show you how to do it if you ask. I educate my customers about easy DIY tasks all the time,” Shahe says. When it comes to our cars, we must be our own first line of defense, and these tips make it easy. Enlightening customers on this sort of care is one of Mazvo’s cornerstone principles, which is why Shahe so openly shares his expertise. “From the beginning, our mission has been to empower all of our customers, to be a vessel for clarity,” he says. And that’s great news for our automotive “family members.”

SPOTLIGHT ON INTERIOR DESIGN: Tina Mellino, Zia Interiors What style is your home? Transitional moving toward soft contemporary. Where did your home design inspiration come from? Our love of entertaining in a casual environment that is warm and inviting. Our designer, Tina Mellino, has worked closely with us twice since 2009 to achieve what feels like a new home without having to leave the neighborhood we love. What did you change about the house to make it yours? We have completed four remodel phases: In 2003, we did an office addition and remodeled the kitchen; in 2009, we did a master bath and guest bath remodel along with complete house redecorating; in 2011, we did a backyard remodel; and in 2017, we completely remodeled our main living area with updates to the guest bath and kitchen. What is your favorite part of your home? Our open-concept living room, dining room, family room and kitchen. It is perfect for entertaining as well as day-to-day living. What item in your home do you love the most? Our favorite is the four-chair sitting and conversation area that greets you as you enter from the front door. The orange chairs with gold accents and the gold shag area rug, along with the adjacent painting and wallpaper, were pulled together perfectly by Tina. Describe your home in three words: Welcoming, casual-elegant and relaxing. What makes your home unique? Our open-concept great room. We wanted our home to feel like a resort, so we captured some of the same features that you find in hospitality resort design. An open bar area, a big flat-screen TV, fireplaces and water features, a chef’s table in the kitchen, and a spectacular outdoor area. Favorite event hosted at your home: Our annual Valentine’s Day party, which is attended by over 60 people and has a DJ and a professional photographer.

SPOTLIGHT ON HOME BUILD: Elbert Adams, Rainmaker Construction What is the style of your home? Modern. Where did your home design inspiration come from? I am very fortunate to have a mom with a good eye for design! That and Pinterest. How was the process of building your home? I have always dreamed of living on Camelback Mountain. I spent a year in and out of contracts before I found the perfect property. At first, the plan was a light remodel, but I realized that the only way to increase the value was to rebuild. It was my first time building, and I had no idea what I was doing. I was very hands-on. Lots of great referrals and many hours on-site got me exactly what I wanted. What is your favorite part of your home? Easy ‌ the negative-edge pools! Nothing beats soaking in the hot tub watching the sun set over the Phoenix city skyline. It is epic. What item in your home do you love the most? That would be a piece of art I bought with my fiancee on a trip to Mexico City. It is a sculpture of a lady with open arms that sits on the coffee table welcoming people as they walk into the home. Describe your home in three words: Built to entertain. What makes your home unique? It is less about the home and more about the property. The woman who previously owned the home was featured in several magazines for her amazing garden of plants and flowers that cover the front yard. Aside from that, I love the fire pit with the built-in outdoor movie projector. Favorite event hosted at your home: My company, PUSH Agency, created an organization called PUSH for Love. In December 2016, we hosted the PUSH Holiday Soiree and raised $10,000 for Heal International, an organization that protects vulnerable and trafficked children. Uptown April ‘19

SCOTT GRIGG AND ADRIANNA BAUM
SPOTLIGHT ON ARCHITECTURE: Erik Peterson and Stuart Jon Traynor, PHX Architecture What is the style of your home? Contemporary. Where did your home design inspiration come from? We wanted something unique that hasn’t been done in Arizona. We got a lot of inspiration from the Bird Streets in Los Angeles. How was the process of building your home? Scott: My career is residential real estate (with The Grigg’s Group) so I am very familiar with the process. I also have the privilege of being the listing agent for Cullum Homes’ communities so it was fun to be on the other side and get to see the process from the customer side. It’s very rewarding to see your dreams come to reality. What is your favorite part of your home? Our upstairs patio that runs the entire length of our home. It can host up to 100 people comfortably and has some of the best views in town. This is where we spend a lot of our time. What item in your home do you love the most? Art pieces that we have collected over the years at Art Basel in South Beach, Miami. We also spend a lot of time in our media room watching sports or movies. Describe your home in three words. Sleek, sexy and well-built! What makes your home unique? The architecture is very unique for Arizona. It has a Hollywood Hills type of feel. We also were able to get a five-car garage for a hillside home, which is very difficult to accomplish. Our community is also unique in that it is only comprised of seven homes that all are required to maintain a contemporary design. Favorite event hosted at your home: We hosted our first Thanksgiving this past year. We were able to set up a table on the patio that dined 35 people, and it showed us how well our home entertains. We even heated the pool for all the kids and dogs to swim after we ate.

JOEL NAMIE AND KIRA MEEKER SPOTLIGHT ON LANDSCAPE DESIGN: Kirk Bianchi, Bianchi Design
What is the style of your home? Built? Southwest. Today? Midcentury modern wannabe. Where did your home design inspiration come from? Our inspiration came from an appreciation for a clean, modern aesthetic. Also, a love for some midcentury modern classics and raw materials like steel, concrete and wood. What did you change about the house to make it yours? We brightened it up with big sliding glass doors along the back of the house (and lots of white paint) and simplified the design by choosing quiet colors and materials. What is your favorite part of your home? We recently remodeled our backyard, and we’re loving it! It has doubled our living space and has become our favorite place to hang out and to entertain. What item in your home do you love the most? Our Eames lounge chair. It’s beautiful from every angle. It makes us happy just looking at it. Describe your home in three words: Comfortable, sophisticated and unfussy. What makes your home unique? Our backyard. The designer, Kirk Bianchi; the concrete guy; and the steel guys we worked with are all tremendously talented artists, and they did outstanding work on our project. As a result, the backyard has a very special, private, Zen-like resort feel. Favorite event hosted at your home: We host an annual Christmas Eve party for family and friends. The weather is usually beautiful so we can open all the doors to the backyard, the house is lit with holiday lights, the tree is up, and the fireplaces inside and out are roaring. It’s become a fun, festive tradition.

SPOTLIGHT ON LIVING ROOM DESIGN: Sophia Greenberg, Gossip Interior Design What is the style of your home? Traditional transitional with Southwest flair. Where did your home design inspiration come from? We toured many homes, which lent inspiration, and also from the beautiful desert views that surround the house. How was the process of building your home? This was not the first new home we have built, and we were very involved in the plans and every part of the design. The process was slow, as it took two long years to build it, but it came out great. What is your favorite part of your home? The great room, which was decorated by Sofia Greenberg of Gossip Interiors. It is comfortable and elegant with picturesque views. What item in your home do you love the most? We cannot choose just one; rather, it’s an entire concept that we love. The furniture that Sophia custom-designed for us fits our style and vision, while creating an inviting and warm atmosphere that meets our needs. Describe your home in three words: Inviting, restful and quiet. What makes your home unique? The uniqueness of our home is the large, one-of-a-kind peninsula lot, with a wash on both sides of the home. The backyard views over the negative-edge pool and putting green are just outstanding! Favorite event hosted at your home: We have had a number of birthday celebrations, homeowners association meetings, and numerous other gatherings and parties in our home. It’s hard to pick a favorite because we’ve enjoyed them all.

TIMOTHY HARRIS SPOTLIGHT ON HOME DECOR: Relics
What is the style of your home? Midcentury modern-inspired. Where did your home design inspiration come from? From the eclectic pieces collected on buying trips all over the world for my home decor and consignment shop, Relics. What did you change about the house to make it yours? I changed everything before moving in and learned a lot along the way. I replaced the windows, flooring, wall finishes, lighting, and fireplace as well as gutted the bathrooms and kitchen and did new landscaping. Many of my furnishings are darker antiques, and I selected dark hardwood flooring. What is your favorite part of your home? The 10-foot ceilings, eight-foot doors, and full-height windows. I like a symmetrical floor plan and the layout of this home is centered on an axis that runs from the front door through the house and into the garden. What item in your home do you love the most? That’s really difficult. After 60 buying trips to Europe and importing 85 containers of goods over the past 17 years, I’ve seen a lot of beautiful furnishings and have cycled many through my home. There are a few things I will probably never let go of – one is an antique iron oak leaf wreath I bought at a fair in Provence. I’ve incorporated it into photo shoots at the shop, and every time it’s on the sales floor, people make a beeline for it. Describe your home in three words: Layered, inviting and evolving. What makes your home unique? Every single piece has a past with a story to tell, and I enjoy refining and changing things to keep it fresh and dynamic. Favorite event hosted at your home: It’s a toss-up between dressy Christmas Eve buffets and spring brunch by the pool.

JULIE AND BOB CLARK
SPOTLIGHT ON HOME BUILD: Phil Nichols, The Phil Nichols Company What is the style of your home? Southwest desert meets soft contemporary. Where did your home design inspiration come from? We wanted an open feeling with a lot of windows that would bring the light and beauty of the desert into the house. Our team – builder Phil Nichols, architect Bryan Rains, and designers Claire Ownby and Angelica Henry – made the dream a reality. How was the process of building your home? We previously had a home built from scratch on New Jersey’s Barnegat Bay, so we were familiar with the process and how difficult it could be, but everyone involved in this project made it very easy for us. What is your favorite part of your home? The great room, which has 180-degree views to the east, south and west, so we get beautiful sunrise and sunset views. The large roof overhangs also provide plenty of shade from the afternoon sun. We especially enjoy evenings when we can open the sliding doors and windows, turn on the outside fire pits, and meld the outside patio area with the interior space. What item in your home do you love the most? The backlit onyx bar that provides a soft glow and adds warmth to the lounge in the evenings, and the glass-enclosed wine storage area that separates the dining room and the lounge, yet still allows an open feeling. Describe your home in three words: Peaceful, inviting and picturesque. What makes your home unique? The openness of the doors and windows provides a light and airy feeling, yet the distance to the neighbors also provides privacy. Favorite event hosted at your home: While our home is well-suited for entertainment, we prefer more intimate gatherings of up to four couples. Of course, our favorite entertaining is when the grandchildren come over for holidays.

WALT BROWN JR. AND DR. RUTH RASSEL SPOTLIGHT ON HOME DESIGN: Deb Malone and Connor Malone, Malone Design
What is the style of your home? Classic contemporary with an emphasis on style and comfort. Where did your home design inspiration come from? Our lifestyle – we love to host family gatherings and entertain. We were inspired by, and included, entryways with cozy coves accented with uplit countertops and happy, colorful artwork. Modern Asian hotels were also an influence, which draw some of the best current designers. What did you change about the house to make it yours? We transformed beloved Italian arches and busted through walls to create an open flow. Dark woods turned into modern grays and bright colors that pop. Two seethrough wine cellars were created on either side of the dining room table to complement the room. What is your favorite part of your home? It’s a tie between our master quarters – which houses the second-floor gym, two massive walk-in closets, and a white marble bathroom – and our inviting cocktail lounge. What item in your home do you love the most? Our family sectional. We love cozy mornings in front of the fireplace with our feet up, enjoying the Golf Channel, cuddles and family time reflecting on the day. Describe your home in three words: Elegant, cozy and welcoming. What makes your home unique? The property. It sits upon a double lot overlooking the Gainey Ranch Golf Club. It’s almost completely on one level, and despite the vastness, it remains homey and inviting. Favorite event hosted at your home: Definitely Christmas and Ruth’s birthday gathering two days prior. The entryway and formal living room showcase a welcoming holiday tree during our favorite time of year.

STAR-STUDDED FOODIE FEST Nirvana Food & Wine Festival expands to Uptown in year three
This month, culinary superstars from around the world will converge in Phoenix for the third annual Nirvana Food & Wine Festival. The Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort’s own executive chef Beau MacMillan is among the headliners on a growing list of luminaries that includes Todd English, Christopher Gross, Robert Irvine, Scott Conant, Jose Garces, Marc Murphy, Jillian Vose, Tony Abou-Ganim and more. And though in prior years each of Nirvana’s delicious dining events occurred solely in and around Scottsdale, this year will feature something very special in the Uptown area: The Rosé Parté. It will be rosé all day at the historic and elegant iconic Wrigley Mansion as chefs Christopher Gross and Jamie Hormel welcome celebrity chef Robert Irvine, Top Chef finalist Lindsay Autry, WWE’s Bella Twins and musical guests The Potash Twins to Nirvana’s Rosé Parté on Sat., April 27. Guests will enjoy pairings of rosé and fine food while exploring the historic environs. There are also two other new events during Nirvana: Wood, Wine & Wagyu and Nirvana After Party at Fat Ox. Hosted by chef MacMillan, David Rose and Jason Asher, Wood, Wine & Wagyu will take place at Sanctuary on Apr. 24 and is presented by Woodford Reserve. This kickoff event for Nirvana will feature an intimate, family-style dinner with Wagyu beef from Snake River Farms cooked over a wood fire by local and national chefs. The dinner also includes craft cocktails made with Woodford Reserve bourbon, specialty wines, a Davidoff cigar reception and live entertainment. Nirvana’s first-ever late-night event – the Nirvana After Party with Fat Ox on Apr. 26 – will be an exclusive, roped-off, live-DJ affair. Award-winning Fat Ox chef Matt Carter and mixologist Jillian Vose, formerly of Sanctuary’s own jade bar and now owner of New York City cocktail bar, The Dead Rabbit, will headline the see-and-be-seen party. PINKIES UP! It’s (Fairytale) Tea time
BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE
IF YOU GO… What: HEAL’s 11th Annual Fairytale Tea When: April 14, 12:30-3:30 p.m. Where: The Camby, 2401 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix Tickets: Individual tickets, $100; Table of 10, $1,000 Information: www. happilyeverafterleague.org.
In 2004, mother and cancer survivor Lauren Daniels founded the Happily Ever After League (HEAL) to provide support to Valley moms afflicted by the disease. The nonprofit puts on a host of whimsical fundraising events year-round that benefit healing programs and services for moms. Of those “fun-raisers,” as Daniels calls them, is Fairytale Tea. “I always wanted to create fun ways to gather supporters to raise money toward the mission of providing mothers with cancer financial and emotional resources. Fairytale Tea became an instant fan-favorite and HEAL’s signature event.” Daniels says. “It’s truly a magical day that simply cannot be explained but must be experienced.” Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood
and Jack and the Beanstalk are just a few classic fairy tales that enrich childhoods with wonder and awe. And although these characters solely exist in fantasy worlds, haven’t you ever wondered what it would be like to experience those worlds in the flesh? The Fairytale Tea gives you an opportunity to find out. Guests are encouraged to register as a table of 10; however, individual guests are more than welcome to attend and will be seated at a pre-decorated table. Tables of 10 will create an elaborate tablescape that honors their favorite fairy tale, storybook or movie. If Jack and the Beanstalk is your chosen tale, your table should reflect it with items like a beanstalk centerpiece, leafy garland and even a
bean-shaped cake. There is no such thing as going overboard with decorations. In fact, the more the merrier! Awards like Best Dressed Table, Best Use of Theme, Outside of the Box (most creative use of materials) among others will awarded. “Each year I think it cannot get any better, and every time I am just blown away by the beautiful room that is created with attention to every last detail. It is truly sensory overload,” Daniels says. This fun-filled day raises essential funds that help moms with cancer on the road to recovery. Last year, Fairytale Tea raised enough money to support 40 moms with a one-time monetary grant to offset medical expenses. This year, the organization is aiming to raise even more. Uptown April ‘19

2019 GMC SIERRA DENALI The all-new pickup adds a level of luxury to the truck market BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS Base price: $54,700
America has a growing love affair with pickup trucks, the hottest selling vehicle segment on the market. It helps that trucks are now feature-packed, mega-capable and loaded with innovation and impressive high-tech functions that will more than satisfy most truck buyers. The 2019 GMC Sierra Denali has been substantially revised to include new exterior and interior designs; a new active suspension system for a smoother, luxurious ride; two new versions of the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8 engines; and an industry-exclusive multifunction tailgate and carbon fiber rear cargo box. My test Denali trim level – which is the top of the line option out of all offered for the GMC Sierra – has been redesigned from the ground up and is both larger and longer, affording a roomier interior. The overall look is big, imposing, and hard to ignore, mostly due to the massive chrome-clad grille and optional 22-inch wheels. Inside, the library-quiet interior is replete with supple heated and cooled Forge leather-appointed seating; open-pore ash wood trim; and advanced, state-of-the art technology and safety features. There’s a panoramic sunroof, a premium

Bose surround-sound infotainment system, a 360-degree HD Surround Vision camera, an embedded Wi-Fi hotspot, and an impressive complement of advanced safety features that include automatic emergency braking, a driver alert package, a safety teen driver feature, and a rear seat reminder. Something especially attractive to truck drivers is GMC’s innovative MultiPro tailgate, which has six different functions and positions for easier loading, doubles as a standing workstation, and provides easier access to items in the cargo box. You won’t find this on any other pickup. On the road, the Denali’s new, exclusive Adaptive Ride control suspension renders the ride quality nearly as comfortable as a luxury sedan. Power from the optional 6.2-liter V-8 engine comes on quickly and is linear and predictable, delivering ample amounts of power and a connection between driver and truck that enhances the joy of the driving experience. All this adds up to one of the biggest, imposing and most luxurious pickup trucks available on the market. You’ll certainly get no argument from me.

The menu, new American cuisine and dishes Singh himself craves, also marks the start of Blue Hound’s curated beef program, initially partnering with Phoenix’s Sterling Meats for certified Angus beef cuts. Case in point, his Steak Tartare ($13) features mouthwatering tenderloin that has been finely chopped and tossed with a preserved lemon vinaigrette before being combined with shallots, chives and sea salt and topped with an egg yolk, capers and horseradish. The result: umami on a plate. It’s paired with spicy yet sweet violet French mustard made with wine grape must and 400-degree-fried rice puffs with sesame seeds for crunch. MercBar’s new cocktail menu delivers on all promises, starting with this award-winning gem
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
In early 2019, Rick Phillips bought MercBar. While a successful business owner and investor today, Phillips is actually an alumnus of the iconic Valley mainstay. In fact, he was instrumental in opening the original MercBar in New York City in 1993 before moving to Phoenix in 1997 to run MercBar Phoenix. All these years later as the owner, Phillips is dedicated to continuing the tradition of excellence without losing the bar’s historic feel. Chief among them: bringing 2017 Bar Brawl champion Will Luddington on board. Together, they’ve launched a new menu featuring more than a dozen new signature cocktails utilizing fresh ingredients, hand-juiced citrus, homemade syrups and tinctures. Of course, several all-time favorites are still there, too. “When I won Bar Brawl, the most popular cocktail I made during the competition was Eastern Promises,” Luddington says. “When I came over to MercBar, it was one of the first items we added.” Eastern Promises ($14) begins with Tito’s Vodka and dry vermouth. “In addition to the spirits, I add passion fruit puree, housemade simple syrup and Giffard Crème de Fruits de la Passion Liqueur, which is a passion fruit liqueur, to the mix,” says Luddington, noting he also adds lemon for acid. “The bitter, herbaceous notes in the vermouth counteract both the passion fruit and syrup’s sweetness, while still allowing the flavors to come through.” Luddington shakes the mixture then strains it in a goblet with ice. He tops it with a float of Peychaud's Bitters, which makes for a striking appearance and adds aromatics, as does the garnishment of mint. MercBar, 2525 E. How did you get your start in cooking? A native of Oaxaca, Mexico, I moved to Los Angeles in 1994 at 16. My first job was as a dishwasher in an Iranian restaurant, where I eventually worked my way up to line cook. While I’ve had no training in a classroom, I’ve studied extensively under chefs across Los Angeles as well as here in the Valley to hone and perfect my craft – and I still learn something new each day. How did you make your way to Sierra Bonita Grill? I moved to Phoenix in 1995 and first worked at a Cajun restaurant before earning a position at longtime Scottsdale mainstay Sassi in 2001. There, I worked in several areas of the kitchen, learning to make pasta and wood-fired pizzas, among other things. By 2006, I was ready to take the next step and joined Sierra Bonita as a line cook. Over the past 13 years, I’ve served in numerous roles, and in 2011 was named executive chef. What makes Sierra Bonita special? We’ve always stayed true to celebrating the history of Arizona. The restaurant is named after Arizona’s oldest continuous family-run ranch: Sierra Bonita Ranch in Wilcox. Our connection to the state’s history is evident throughout our decor, food and drinks. Tell us about the menu… Recently, we upgraded the menu for the first time in eight years to authentically reflect a fusion of Southern Mexican and ranch-style cuisine. We use a lot of chilies, sauces, and other ingredients commonly used in my native Oaxaca, but now we also have an “out on the range” menu as well, focusing on rustic, cowboy cuisine. What would readers be surprised to know about you? I’ve eaten ants and grasshoppers! Chapulines (grasshoppers) and chicatanas (flying ants) – as I call them – are commonly eaten in Oaxaca. Taste FOOD FILES
SNEAKY GOOD FOOD Delightful dining in unexpected places
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Stand Up Live Phoenix
The big, bold comedy club is Comedy Centralcertified. Now, it is also Uptown-certified as a legitimate go-to eatery in the Valley. There are, of course, club standards including burgers and ample starters, but the menu really shines with its entree offerings, which include a buildyour-own elevated mac’n’cheese, roasted chicken and even rich, creamy gnocchi. Each of the large entree salads are also fresh, seasonal and well dressed. While there is plenty to laugh about at Stand Up Live, the food is no joke. www.standuplive.com.
AMC Dine-In Esplanade 14
Thanks to AMC’s dine-in theater at the Esplanade, dinner and movie has never tasted so good. Of course, the venue still boasts everyone’s favorite old-school concession stand goodies – think buttered popcorn and jumbo-sized candy – but beyond the classics it offers full salads, entrees and a well-stocked bar with dozens of cocktail options. Guests are able to order food at the concession stand or choose VIP seating options, where a waiter serves you and your group while seated for the film. www.amctheatres.com.
Madison Improvement Club
This month, we went looking for food outside of the usual restaurants and bars in the area. After searching high and low for culinary hot spots hiding in plain sight, local theaters, music venues and even museums proved to have some delicious options.

There is more to the Madison than spin and yoga classes. The popular Arcadia fitness studio is home to its own Kaleidoscope Juice for those looking to fuel up. The brand not only put cold-pressed juice on the map in Arizona, but boasts locally roasted coffee, a full bake shop, acai bowls, salads and even catering options. It also has a full staff able to help develop custom cleanses for individuals based on their nutritional need, allergies and other needs as well. www.themadisonvibe.com.
Palette at Phoenix Art Museum
Palette encompasses all that Phoenix Art Museum has to offer into one centrally located restaurant. With fresh, farm-to-table ingredients and a seasonally changing menu, Palette has something for everyone to enjoy. Indulge in brunch items every weekend such as Challah French Toast with fresh berries, whipped cinnamon butter, and dulce syrup. The lunch and dinner menus include Bruschetta, Chicken or Fish Tacos, the Mission Fig Salad, and the Portabella Melt. On Wednesdays and
and continues the resort’s trend toward a more approachable, relaxed experience with welcoming, much-loved offerings that appeal to locals and resort guests alike. The Tavern offers indoor and outdoor seating, overlooking the lush greenery of the property’s new golf course. Its comfortable, contemporary design is accented by subtle touches that offer a tip of the hat to the region’s history. As for the food, expect top-of-the-line “pub grub” for lunch, dinner and happy hour, including signature gourmet burgers, Fish & Chips and shareable starters, among others, created by chef de cuisine Michael Press. www.thephoenician.com.
Gertrude's
Fridays, Palette offers a happy hour including local beers and wines along with some of the eatery’s most popular appetizers and entrees. www.phxart.org.
The Phoenix Botanical Garden boasts a lot more than desert beauty. It has, perhaps, the sneaky best restaurant in town within its walls. For those who haven’t been, Gertrude’s is a full-service restaurant located just inside the Desert Botanical Garden featuring seasonal menus and locally sourced dishes for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. There is something uniquely Arizona in nearly every single dish, in fact! Gertrude’s sources directly from local farmers and purveyors to offer extraordinarily fresh and unexpected flavors. The diversity of the weekend brunch menu was recently elevated with the addition of a Breakfast Fried Rice made with arroz verde, featuring local sausage from Schreiners, Hickman’s eggs, micro cilantro from AZ Micro Greens and locally sourced veggies, among other stunners. www. gertrudesrestaurant.net.
Cocina 10 at Crescent Ballroom
It is possible to have good food while enjoying great live music in the Valley, thanks to Cocina 10 at Crescent Ballroom. The concept is a clever one: Arizona cooking inspired by recipes sourced from the people and places along the I-10 itself! There are several vegetarian items and tons of comfort foods as well as the Southwestern-inspired cuisine one would expect from area families and patrons, from tortas and street tacos to burritos and Sonoran dogs. www.crescentphx.com.
Lucky Strike
Yes, it is a bowling alley. But no, the food does not strike out! Located in the heart of Downtown Phoenix, the menu at Lucky Strike – which is offered “laneside” as well as at tables if preferred – features several high-concept dishes, notably a riff on chicken and waffles that is instead wings and waffles, Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls, Andouille Stuffed Mushrooms and even handheld salads. The pizzas are another highlight, especially for those who are on keto or gluten-free diets as the cauliflower crust option passes the flavor test. www.luckystrikesocial.com.

HIGH-RISE HOT SPOT Little Rituals opens in Downtown Phoenix
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY LITTLE RITUALS
Some say “two heads are better than one.” Others warn against “too many cooks in the kitchen.” Thankfully, when it comes to Little Rituals, the former is absolutely the case. The brainchild of Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour founder Ross Simon and Casino del Sol’s former chief mixologist Aaron DeFeo – both award winners several times over for their innovation and tireless work to elevate Arizona’s cocktail industry – Little Rituals is a legitimate first-ever concept to come to the Valley. “We’re a stylish, progressive spot located on the fourth floor of the Residence Inn/Courtyard by Marriott Phoenix Downtown, which is the newest high-rise hotel downtown,” Simon explains. “But unlike most ‘hotel bars,’ which usually operate from within as part of the brand’s larger food and beverage department, Little Rituals is a wholly independent entity.” Similar concepts – notably Broken Shaker in Miami’s Freehand Hotel and Death & Co. in Denver’s Ramble Hotel – have recently been making waves. “We are in full control of all aspects of Little Rituals, which allows us to bring a new level of amenities to hotel guests and really

connect with the local community,” says DeFeo, who adds there are extensive staff training and drink preparation programs in place to create the dozens of housemade infusions, garnishes, syrups, and foams. The training is evident already – within days of opening, Little Rituals’ bartender Chanel Godwin-McMaken won Arizona Cocktail Weekend’s Last Slinger Standing competition, a showdown hosted by the United States Bartending Guild to find the best mixologists in the Southwest. So, given all this, what can one expect from the cocktail menu? “The menu is broken down into six categories, each featuring five cocktails: Daily Rituals, perfect beginnings or ends to any evening; Delicious Rituals, exciting flavor combinations one might not expect; Cooling Rituals, spicy yet soothing concoctions; Stirred & Silky Rituals, twists on the classics; Indulgent Rituals, more complex cocktails; and Shared Rituals, an ever-changing selection of punches, pitchers and even food and drink combos,” Simon says. It also features a rather unique emphasis on fortified and aromatized wines, such as vermouth and sherry. There are, of course, also beer and wine options. The cocktail menu is complemented by a 10-item small bites menu designed by Bitter & Twisted chef Bob Tam, as well as spirit-infused baked goods and sweets by Lauren Klein, Little Rituals’ in-house pastry chef. The options run the gamut from vegan-friendly Beet Carpaccio to a bacon board. Given Tam is a Hong Kong native, there are also Asian-inspired items including an Asian-Italian Carbonara Lo Mein and a "Pho" French Dip. Little Rituals is open daily 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and offers “Aperitivo hour” (happy hour) 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with discounts on a rotating menu of beers, wines cocktails and select bar bites.
