The Beauty of Benevolence How Drs. Ali and Tamir Mosharrafa of Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery are improving lives, in both their practice and the communities they serve.
P
erhaps it’s their steadfast commitment to ongoing education, providing patients with the most up-to-date procedures and techniques – or the unsurpassed results, a perfect marriage of art and science. Maybe it’s the proven expertise and extensive education of Drs. Ali and Tamir Mosharrafa, or the way they take the time to develop relationships with their patients, understanding unique needs and meeting specific goals, making themselves available day or night. Whatever the reason, Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery continues to receive accolades from satisfied patients and fellow medical professionals alike. Boardcertified and equipped with their own fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgery center, Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir deliver exceptional outcomes in every area of cosmetic and breast reconstructive surgery, aesthetic services, and skincare. Breast, body, or face, Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery’s compassionate, supportive practice allows patients the luxury of being treated like family, and the reassurance of knowing they’re in extremely capable hands. But when a doctor’s care goes beyond individual patients and extends throughout a community, even more amazing things happen. For nearly two decades (and counting!), Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir have performed acts of service through their involvement with local charities. Still, they wanted to do more to provide consistent, reliable support to the causes they hold dear. In 2015, Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery officially launched its nonprofit organization, Beauty for Good – which now receives a portion of the proceeds from each treatment the doctors perform. In turn, Beauty for Good partners with other charitable organizations to help raise much-needed funds and awareness through special events and campaigns. In April of this year, the organization hosted its first annual Beauty for Good
Gala, benefiting all of its charitable partnerships: the Phoenix Dream Center, Singleton Moms, Prevent Child Abuse Arizona, and more. (Save the date for next year’s Beauty for Good Gala, which will take place on April 14th, 2018.) In addition to the gala, Beauty for Good designates a full month to each of its partner charities, during which they focus intensely on its outreach. Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir are passionate about each cause they support, and eager to give back to the community they love. For the Drs. Mosharrafa, it’s all about making a substantial impact – on the lives of their patients, to be sure, but also the lives of those who benefit from their benevolent acts. “Cosmetic
surgery is a beautiful thing when it improves the life of one person,” says Dr. Tamir. “What an even greater experience it is when it improves the lives of many.” For more information about Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery or to schedule your complimentary consultation, call 602-513-8133 or visit www.mosharrafa.com. Follow Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery on Facebook to keep connected on current promotions and savings, events and seminars, and fun stuff from blogs to photos to how-tos from its aesthetic specialists. Experts in MonaLisa Touch News Update: The MonaLisa Touch has now been FDA approved in the U.S. for over 2 years and at Arizona Women’s Care more than 800 procedures have brought amazing results to women across the Southwest region. This amazing NON HORMONAL treatment for vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, frequent bladder or vaginal infections and other symptoms that result from a lack of estrogen has revolutionized our success in treating these disheartening issues. In a recent Stanford University study, reductions in dryness and painful intercourse were especially marked, dropping an average of 75% and 66% respectively. As Lindsay (age 56) states, “I was skeptical, but I needed to try something. After the 3 treatments, intercourse was so much better I could not believe it. I actually asked my husband if we could do it again, and he was shocked! It has made such a difference in our relationship.” The MonaLisa Touch uses fractional CO2 laser therapy
to regenerate collagen and rid the vaginal mucosa of the dry atrophic cells. Three simple treatments in the office 6 weeks apart have shown incredible improvements in vaginal atrophy. These treatments take about 5 minutes and are virtually painfree, no anesthesia is needed. As women caring for women, our expertise and customer service are unsurpassed in the valley. Our staff of all-female physicians were the 1st board certified OB/GYNS in the state of Arizona to perform the MonaLisa Touch procedure. We welcome you to any of our open house seminars to learn more about the MonaLisa Touch! You will have the opportunity to meet with the doctors and talk with the patients who have had this life changing procedure. One last testimonial from Rhonda (age 61) sums up why we do what we do, “Thank you Arizona Women’s Care for offering me the MonaLisa Touch! It is an amazing treatment. I am 100% back to feeling like I did 20 years ago!”

MICHAEL FITZMAURICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board Certified Hand Surgeon
Between regularly sending emails and text messages on your smart phone, spending hours gripping the steering wheel in rush hour traffic, and playing hours of tennis on the weekends, your hands are locked in an endless cycle of repetitive motions that typically go unnoticed until pain sets in. Soreness at the base of the thumb, pain, or a clicking, snapping, or locking sensation while the thumb is in motion could be a sign of trigger thumb. Trigger thumb can result from tendon inflammation due to repetitive gripping motions, or from an underlying medical condition like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice has pioneered a minimally invasive procedure to treat trigger thumb in Arizona without the need for complicated and invasive traditional surgery. The EndoTech® Endoscopic Trigger Thumb Release system was designed by Dr. Fitzmaurice and is available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute. EndoTech® uses a small incision and an endoscopic technique to fix the injured tendon in an outpatient procedure. With EndoTech® , you’ll be back in motion, firm grip in tact, in no time!

t’s here, it’s here! The issue that centers around all things man! We’ve turned Uptown upside down (that’s a mouthful!), focusing pretty much every section in the magazine on dudes. To start off, we featured California-based real estate celebrity, Mauricio Umansky on the cover. The Agency founder and CEO recently brought his firm to the Valley, partnering with some of the top local agents to change the market here as we know it. We spoke with Mauricio (page 28) about his journey to the top, what makes his model so different and the thing that drives him to continue on (Spoiler alert: he does it all for his wife – actress and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast member Kyle Richards – and daughters). Outside of the star-studded cover, we went a little gaga over guys this month! Think drinks (as in elevated manly classics and breweries to visit), can’t-beat burgers (page 72), beard maintenance must-haves (page 58), and two manly getaways if you have a need for speed or a love of fly fishing on pages 60 and 62, respectively. You’ll notice we’re also spotlighting fashion for fellas. On top of showcasing accessories and decor, we also got to know seven stylish studs. On page 32, they shared their inspiration, what makes their style unique and some of their favorite places to shop. Food, fashion and fun … what more could a guy want? H AND SURGEON MICH AEL FITZMAUR ICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board CertiďŹ ed Hand Surgeon
Dr. Fitzmaurice has performed thousands of minimally-invasive, endoscopic hand procedures in Arizona over the last decade.
You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb.
Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons. Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!
De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System.

I am going to get a divorce. What are my first steps?
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Gabby Richman CREATIVE DIRECTORS Lalo Reyes Anthony Cox
First and foremost, I am very sorry to hear the news. Moving forward with a divorce, or dissolution as it is called in Arizona, is never easy. There are ways, however, with the right planning to make the process a bit smoother and easier for you:
CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Alison Bailin Batz, Emily Glynn, Laci Leigh Stilwell, Susan Lanier-Graham, Elizabeth Liberatore, Brittany Maroney, Jim Prueter
1. Pay attention to your mail:
What bills are coming to the house? How much are they? Where do you bank and invest your money? Find a copy of your last few tax returns, including any business tax returns, and make copies of everything.
PHOTOGRAPHY David Apeji, Ben Arnold, Elizabeth Barry, Miachelle DePiano, Claudia Johnstone, Mark Morgan, Beverly Shumway, Debby Wolvos
2. Keep a calendar:
Keep track of how often your spouse travels. Once you physically separate, you should also keep track of how often your spouse sees and contacts the children. This is helpful in trying to determine a parenting time schedule in the future.
3. Change your thinking:
ADVERTISING COORDINATOR Samantha Lapid sam@richmanmediagroup.com
As hard as it may be at times, you must find a way to put your love for your children above the disdain you may have for your spouse. You two are the only parents your children have, and they should never be forced to be in a position where they have to choose sides or have anxiety because both of their parents will be at an event. You should be able to sit together at their games, recitals and graduations.

4. Consult with a qualified attorney:
People receive a considerable amount of bad information through the media, movies and even from friends with the best of intentions. Every divorce is different and has its own individual circumstances and, as such, your dissolution process needs to be tailored specifically to your family. Unfortunately, much of my practice involves modifying previous orders for people, costing them twice as much as it would have had they retained the proper attorney from the beginning. Many orders cannot be modified at all, which makes it imperative that your case is handled correctly from the start.

FROM THE FIELD TO THE MEGAFORMER Paul Green, former NFL tight end, shares his journey to better joints BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE PHOTOS BY JAMES PATRICK
Paul Green donned some pretty impressive jerseys throughout his eight-year career in the NFL. Green, who played tight end, has sported everything from blue and orange for the Denver Broncos; blue, silver and bright green for the Seattle Seahawks; and black, gold, and white for the New Orleans Saints while out on the field. continued… JUNE 2017 |

up close “I started out in Denver which was great since we went to Super Bowl 24 that year. We got killed, but the experience was awesome. I then went to Seattle for four years and finished up in New Orleans,” Green explains. The former football player hails from Coalinga, California, a small farm town. He reminisces about spending every summer working on his family’s farm. “My father grows pistachios and my two siblings and I would always help [him out on the farm]. Back then it was all tomatoes, cotton and grapes, which made for a lot of work but some great tomato fights,” Green recalls. He went on to study at University of Southern California and earned a degree in communications. Additionally, he was a tight end for the football team there. “I’m a USC Trojan for life! [My communication] studies taught me to stop talking about USC in Sun Devil territory, though,” he laughs. Since leaving the NFL, Green has tried his hand at a variety of other pursuits – one being acting. His best friend who is also an actor, Patrick Muldoon, encouraged him to pursue the craft after football. Green followed his friend’s advice and in 2003 landed a role in the HBO comedydrama television series, Entourage. “It was a small role but to this day I still get recognized by college kids as ‘calf guy,’” he says. His calf guy role led to other appearances in shows such as Alias, CSI Miami, and many others. When he isn’t making cameo appearances, Green can be found at his other passion, The Body Lab (www.thebodylabus.com), which has locations in both Phoenix and Scottsdale. The studio is equipped with Lagree Fitness machines and classes that put a whole new spin on Pilates. Lagree Fitness emerged when former bodybuilder Sebastien Lagree was tired of making time for both strength training and cardio routines inside and outside of the gym. His solution, Lagree Fitness, tackles both areas in half the time and in one place. The revolutionary workout challenges the body’s endurance and
strength simultaneously, which hooked Green after his first session. Green’s joints have taken quite a beating over the years, from playing basketball every day until his 44th birthday to harsh blows taken on the football field. The popular fitness method became his joints’ saving grace. “Lagree Fitness has been an eyeopening experience! I didn’t think there was something that could match the intensity of my training and be much easier on the joints, but here it is,” he says. “The first time I went into a Lagree studio I was in great shape but I only did 30 percent of the workout – it was that hard! I am a stickler for form and if you do it correctly, [no other workout] will net better results.” The Body Lab offers Lagree Fitness classes, which activate slow twitch body

fibers via controlled movements. It is a full-body workout that every trainer spices up based on his or her unique personality. The constant variation keeps Green coming back for more. “All of the trainers are amazing and I love the different personalities and specialties that come through in their classes,” he says. Green admits that most former football players miss the camaraderie of the team. Although no one could replace his former brothers on the Broncos, Seahawks and Saints, he has found a new community at his fitness studio. “It really feels like a family, and when you have 11 or 12 people in class struggling together and of the like mind to better themselves. it’s really a natural high that can’t be duplicated,” Green explains. The fitness fanatic is no newbie to the Valley. He first moved here in 1992 to train with Mack Newton during his offseason after suffering from a serious football injury. He officially made Arizona home around six years ago. “I moved here in 2011 for a wonderful woman who ended up giving me the greatest gift of my life, my almost 4-yearold boy Jack!” Fatherhood has proven to be this former NFL’s favorite pursuit. “It’s such an adventure every day watching him [Jack] grow into this little human being. My favorite time is just playing with him and letting his imagination run wild, which it does! At the end of the day I can only hope to show him as much love as I can and instill in him the values that I believe will make him a better man someday,” he smiles. It goes without saying that Green has always chosen to live an active lifestyle. Whether it was chasing his siblings around on the farm, playing basketball and football throughout his life, taking Lagree classes at The Body Lab, or playing hide-and-seek with his son – health has always been at the forefront. “Health is everything!” he says. “Please take time to educate yourself on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle as it not only affects your well-being, but all those around you as well.”

RELAX & RETIRE
Calvin Goetz helps Valley residents seamlessly transition into retirement BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
C
alvin Goetz is your go-to guy for financial advice. As a partner and co-founder of Strategy Financial Group, Goetz has dedicated more than a decade of his career to helping clients attain their retirement goals. The Tucson native, who attended Northern Arizona University, fell in love with the financial services industry at age 25, only growing his business ever since. Goetz recently published his first book, Climbing the Retirement Mountain, where he provides readers with a sound plan to help them save and sustain themselves in what could be a 30-year retirement, inspired by his parents’ journey. “I watched the struggles that my own mom and dad went through when they transitioned from working to retirement. Nobody was there helping them draft out a written retirement income plan, and I don’t want any of my clients to be without a plan,” he says. Goetz also works closely within the local LGBTQ community, specifically helping homeless youth. “These youth are our future and will be the future leaders of tomorrow,” he explains.
Etc.
What’s next? I am currently working on my second book called My Best Retirement (2018). It will focus a little bit less on financial tools and more on reinventing yourself in retirement to live your best life. What are some of your favorite local restaurants? I love walking to La Grande Orange, Postino Wine Bar, and Ingo’s, which are all down the street from me. Any financial advice you’d like to share? Time is your best investment strategy. The earlier you can start putting money away systematically, the more you are going to have in retirement. Also, focus on taxes. Put your money in places where distributions will be tax-free in the future. UPTOWN |

hen your two favorite pastimes are cassette tapes and old-time TV game shows, you have no choice but to chase a career that blends both. That is exactly what Al Jones did with Lyrics Guru, a song lyrics trivia game in which players receive a series of song titles and must match the correct word found within the lyrics of the song. Though launching a business is hard work, Jones took the challenge head on. “I enjoy being a business owner, seeing the rewards of persistence and being a positive example to those interested in starting a game development business.” With the mobile game racking up 17,000 active users and the hand-held card version now available on Amazon and in Walmart, the already established game will shift its focus on more core competency word games – specifically those which incorporate music and song lyrics. “We have plans to launch a variation of the game where songs are sorted by decades, as well as a Braille version and a family edition game, marketed to the LDS community. We would also love to produce a television or radio game show version of the Lyrics Guru product. The future is bright and we’re excited.”
Etc.
What is the game industry competition like? Competition is fierce in the industry with developers fighting to be the next big thing. Al Jones Corporation, at this time, plans to focus on its core competency of word games – more specifically those which incorporate music and song lyrics.. Do you have a favorite song lyric? “I’m stone in love with you,” [which is also the song name] by The Stylistics. What was your favorite game growing up as a kid and why? Chess. My father taught me the basic structure of the game. During play, I learned the importance strategy and mental focus. UPTOWN |

W
hen asked to describe her style in 10 words or less, Mitch Phillips, owner of Rare Scarf Vintage, needs only one. “Eclectic,” she says vehemently of her signature look. “I have a bit of bohemian in me, some glam vibes, a modern twist … I like to mix patterns, wear bold colors and large accessories, and [believe] that a great shoe can make any outfit!” The adjective unforgettable may be equally fitting. The Minnesota native, who also runs an interior design business and styles editorial photoshoots, rocks dramatic bangs, blocky specs and oftentimes, a safari of different animal prints. Phillips exudes a unique sort of self-assurance, the kind that encourages stares from passersby flabbergasted by the courage of her effortless glam. “[All it takes is] a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll, some sequins, vintage rock T-shirts, gold lamé (fabric) and definitely having a good time in life,” Phillips divulges. As for her number one tip for tracking down vintage treasures? The rare, everchanging inventory of her personal store is a good place to start.
If you could return to any decade, which would you choose and why? The ’70s! The clothes, the shoes, the hair … Studio 54! Which is the most cherished room in your home? My living room, surrounded by my dogs, my favorite art, stacks of books, my comfortable sofa and Netflix for binge watching! What is the most glamorous accessory you own? My collection of fur coats. Favorite indulgence: Champagne, potato chips and dark chocolate. What is the most adventurous thing you’ve done? Some friends, my boyfriend and I backpacked in the snow in the middle of the night to an old shed in the woods in Canada. We slept in sleeping bags, stoked the fire all night, woke up to dogs sledding through the woods, then packed up for a cold stay on a bed of ice in the Hotel De Glace in Quebec. [It was a] great experience, but I prefer a warm bed.

The rapport Rock has established with his talented squad, in combination with his causal yet polished wardrobe, has been instrumental in nurturing the warmhearted atmosphere of the fastcasual, healthy spot in which he works. “In an open concept kitchen, it’s imperative to be approachable and welcoming to all guests,” he says, alluding to Flower Child’s exposed expo. “Dressing both comfortably and professionally allows me to maintain [that] persona.” For Rock, this means plenty of plaid button-downs, an impeccably groomed beard and coincidentally, inspiration from the Woodstock generation. “I’ve always been drawn to the relaxed vibe of the ’60s and ’70s,” says The Grateful Dead fan, who admits to having a secret stash of tie-dye in the depths of his closet. “It’s all about staying true to what I find most comfortable and modernizing the look.”

The Agency CEO and founder talks his innovative model, venturing to the Valley and his journey to the top BY EMILY GLYNN
S
While some may be surprised to see the celebrity real estate mogul and his team about town, Umansky’s presence in the Southwest has been a calculated move, spurred by the reality of luxurious properties and local aptitude. “Arizona has been part of our expansion plans for some time, and finding the right talent and ownership team was crucial to making our move,” Umansky says. “Our Arizona partners will change the face of luxury real estate in the Valley as we work globally to position Arizona as an international destination for luxury homebuyers.” The Agency has already established partnerships with four of the Valley’s top luxury agents (Raul Siqueiros, Racquel Barbey, Jack Luciano and Roxanne Johnson). everal short months ago, as the negligible Arizona winter frost made way for spring, The Agency was officially introduced to the Phoenix market with a sumptuous and swanky affair. The launch party, held at a private studio in Scottsdale, was attended by some of the Valley’s most influential individuals, eager to welcome the Los Angeles-based luxury real estate brokerage and lifestyle company to Arizona. Amongst throngs of beautiful people and walls of proprietary crimson-red roses, was Mauricio Umansky, looking as sharp as ever in a fitted charcoal-gray suit. The company’s charismatic CEO and founder was deep in his element, exuding the same ingenuity that has played a subtle role in elevating The Agency to superstardom.

partners have been working tirelessly with Valley developers on several luxury projects, including TrueCraft Residential, ENVY Residences, Edison Midtown and Inspire Downtown Scottsdale by Scottsdale-based developer Deco Communities and Two Biltmore Estates by Phoenix-based Geneva Holdings. The Arizona office, which specializes in luxury homes, new development, resort real estate, residential leasing and luxury vacation rentals, is already creating quite the buzz for its unprecedented methodology. “The Arizona market has rapidly become a global destination for luxury homebuyers,” Umansky affirms. “These forward-thinking projects are continuing to lead the way for innovative real estate.” Since its founding in 2011, this type of innovation has been The Agency’s guiding light. With innovation, however, often comes risk, and both Umansky and his co-founder, design and architectural specialist Billy Rose, have always acknowledged the precariousness of their original vision. “As entrepreneurs, we were really putting everything on the line – including stable, lucrative careers – with no guarantee of success,” Umansky recalls. “We funded the company as partners, so we could own [it] outright and get things up and running, UPTOWN |
setting up shop in a tiny strip mall office with six agents and a handful of folding chairs.” From there, they crossed their fingers, waiting for other agents to join and vying for market share while competing against much larger, more established competitors. “Despite the potential of failure, we were driven by the notion that we had to take a chance if we wanted to leave our mark on an industry we care so much about, and we haven’t looked back,” Umansky says. Their fearless perseverance persisted and The Agency went on to redefine the world of real estate, shunning the traditional brokerage model in favor of collaboration and teamwork amongst agents. In an industry known for its habitually aggressive ways, The Agency’s approach transformed the experience of buying and selling, promoting a collaborative culture where agents feel empowered to share their contacts, expertise and spheres of influence in order to guarantee superior client representation and an indispensable competitive edge. “This culture has allowed The Agency to extend far beyond what a conventional brokerage firm offers, creating curated experiences for our clients,” says Umansky, alluding to the business’

personalized approach. “[Growth] is important, but more importantly, we have to grow organically and strategically to maintain our authentic boutique feel.” The same attentive and distinctive way of life has also led to the development of The Agency’s in-house creative division, The Agency Creative (TAC). The division, the first-ever of any brokerage, is comprised of graphic designers, analysts and tech gurus dedicated to providing strategic marketing solutions for buyers, sellers, developers and investors worldwide, bringing brands to life through captivating web design, branding and advertising. “We are not afraid of making mistakes, trying new things [or] taking risks,” Umansky explains. “We don’t simply envision The Agency as a brokerage, but as a luxury lifestyle company committed to … telling stories … and connecting global communities.” The Agency’s international reputation, sustained by a strong foundation of collaborative culture, world-class teams operating on the U.S. West Coast, and in both Mexico and Turks and Caicos, comes as no surprise. Where integrity and ethics are involved, everything falls into place – global clout included. Although Umansky certainly encountered his fair share of challenges while navigating his way to the top, the real estate mogul demonstrated the traits (tenacity, ambition, intuition – the list goes on) required to achieve the staggering success he enjoys today from a young age. Following a brief stint as a pizza delivery boy, Umansky founded a fashion line with his father at the young age of 25, growing the company to make $30 million in sales per year. Umansky now ranks as the No. 1 topproducing real estate agent in California and No. 5 in the U.S. and has been recognized among the top 10 real estate producers in the country on REAL Trends’ annual list for seven consecutive years, an accomplishment he credits to consistent and conscientious attention to his clients’ needs. In 2010, his career took a slight turn for the unconventional when his wife, Kyle Richards, was cast on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, a TV show on Bravo. Though he was already well established at the time, the unscripted hit show provided a unique opportunity for Umansky to showcase his business to upwards of one million viewers. “While star power is an added bonus, I’ve learned that the exposure wouldn’t be so influential if it wasn’t backed by a meaningful and impactful brand. The Agency’s involvement in reality television has made us a household name, expanded our reach and generated publicity, something our competitors aren’t able to provide,” he explains. “But if it all went away tomorrow, The Agency has established itself as a leading player in the luxury real estate market, with or without the cameras.” Umansky also uses his influential platform to give back to the

Aside from serving as a board member for Giveback Homes, a network of real estate professionals dedicated to creating social change, he also supports the National Breast Cancer Association, HOLA Foundations and The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where he battled blood disease as a child. The motive behind everything he does, however, from the hectic schedules and open houses to the enduring jetlag and countless media appearances, comes down to one simple thing. “My family is the reason I do this,” he says of his daughters and beloved wife of 21 years. “They give me purpose to work harder [and] put meaning into everything I do.” For more information, visit www.theagencyre.com.

Milee Karre
Head basketball coach at Ottawa University Putting together an outfit can be paralleled to a basketball game – all of the players (or shall we say pieces of clothing) need to work together as a team in order to score high in style. Just ask Arizona native Milee Karre, head coach for the men’s basketball team at Ottawa University, who lives out his passion courtside. While his casual wardrobe consists of Adidas and athletic wear, Karre takes influence from icon and fellow athlete David Beckham for his fancier ensembles. The coach’s motto, “look good, play good” is best illustrated when he dresses up for game day (with favorite pieces from Suitsupply and J.Crew) to feel both comfortable and powerful. While his slam dunk style has to include the perfect tie and shoes, the most important aspects of his look are clean lines and a tailored suit. “Fit is everything. You can have the nicest suit on the market, and if it doesn’t fit correctly, it’s a waste.” The finishing touch? An accessory Karre holds near and dear to his heart: His grandfather’s Presidential Rolex for an added touch of class and ’50s swag. His love of fitness continues after the buzzer with just about anything involving athletics, including working out and watching sports.

Nick Ciletti
Anchor and reporter at ABC15 Like anyone in the public eye, it’s important for Nick Ciletti to look the part – at least when he’s on air with ABC15 as an anchor and reporter. As a TV personality, Ciletti always has a freshly pressed (and well-tailored) suit on hand, as the news world is full of surprises like anchoring at the last minute or doing a major interview. Other times, he opts for Banana Republic slacks and a button-down, or if a story takes him somewhere like Camelback Mountain, his go-to is jeans and a black V-neck a la Anderson Cooper. Not only is Ciletti living out his childhood dream on air, he’s also a pediatric cancer survivor and now gives back to kids by volunteering at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. During his free time, Ciletti usually sports laidback, unique bargain finds from the clearance racks at Zara, Macy’s, J.Crew and even Marshall’s, giving him wardrobe variety while staying within budget. “Those stores have some really unique things and pieces you won’t find elsewhere. You may have to hunt a little bit, but that’s all part of the fun, right?” His most prized possession, though, can’t be found in his closet (but sometimes probably sneaks in there!) – his adopted French bulldog, Larry.

Michael Albee
Attorney at Albee Law Firm Born and raised in Scottsdale, Michael Albee describes his style as nerdy with a dash of charm – or, he says, maybe more than a dash. The business owner, attorney and self-proclaimed superhero by night (he has a 10-year-old daughter), loves to experiment with color and often takes influence from NBA players, noting they usually have the ability to afford the nicest clothes and they are tall, like Albee. During the week, you’ll find him in colored fitted suits at work and creative, vibrant tank tops or gym clothes by night. For a night out, he relies on solid colors, the occasional blazer and dark jeans from the likes of Banana Republic, Nordstrom and Burberry. Albee swears there’s nothing he wouldn’t wear, and that he’s influenced by nothing and everything all at the same time, with a personal mantra to have fun with his clothes. While a favorite accessory for this budding author is his MacBook Pro, other must-haves include his bow tie, comb and gold obsidian beaded bracelet (meant to eliminate ego and conflict), which he doesn’t leave home without. His fashion tip? Correctly fitted clothing (i.e. clothing that looks good). “When you look good, you feel good, and that message pours into your world a positive vibe that keeps you lucky.”

With his sunglasses on and Starbucks in hand (his two favorite accessories), Mattox is on a mission to let others know it’s OK to be different, hoping to change the world with his life story and ostentatious fashion brand (Royal Black Sheep). While he takes influence from classic black-and-white movies, music videos and fashion blogs, along with stars who were ahead of their time (such as Prince), Mattox’s style is 100 percent his own, citing attitude and confidence as his muses. “I play with gender bending as I feel this is the future, as fashion is a recycle and things from different eras come back in style.” For his day-to-day look, the creative visionary often selects outfits that are shiny, silky and metallic. For a night out, Mattox follows his motto, “Why be the same every day?” He lets his soul do the selecting, often channeling one of his favorite characters like 007. Whether he’s answering emails, out with friends or reading his most prized possession – the Bible his late grandmother gave him – Mattox can be spotted in a mix of Tom Ford and Celine with pieces from Goodwill and Buffalo Exchange.

Mario Aniles
Entrepreneur and CPA As an entrepreneur, Mario Aniles is used to making his own rules in business, and that ideal transfers to his wardrobe. As a natural-born leader (Aniles started his first business while attending Arizona State University), the native Phoenician has a self-proclaimed “classic man” style. Aniles often finds himself rushing around from the office to board meetings, admitting his mind goes on autopilot when getting dressed, often selecting navy suits for the workday and a black blazer with a pocket square for a little flair when the sun goes down. Color is definitely key – Aniles takes inspiration from the bright suits wore by Robert DeNiro in Casino and counts on Salvatore Ferragamo for his favorite pieces. “I love contemporary art and sometimes try to incorporate colors that pop, accessories that stand out, and combinations that may not always seem to go together but that hopefully look OK in the spirit of challenging traditional norms.” One traditional norm you won’t see him breaking is the sandals with socks rule, a combination he says he will never sport. When he’s not dreaming up his next big idea, you can find Aniles hiking, enjoying a meal with friends, or relaxing at a local lounge with an OldFashioned in hand.

Timothy C. Baodo Wardrobe stylist
Growing up, Timothy C. Baodo moved around the world with his military father until landing in Phoenix, where he’s found his niche as a wardrobe stylist – a job that’s not only his passion but also a craft he considers an art form. While Baodo designs new projects for fashion shows, he also creates looks for his clients (and even their kids) through personal shopping, naming his peers and department stores like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus as inspiration for building wardrobes. Though Baodo’s most “prized person” is his eight-year-old son, he still loves a great watch, noting that it conveys one’s taste and social status with the ability to serve as a conversational icebreaker. Baodo is also all about fashion that works, noting that his style is very utilitarian – comfortable work shoes, seasonal fabrics, utilizing his pockets, and always having a briefcase or backpack that will hold his laptop while completing his ensemble. A tailored look is also key. “There is nothing more inspiring than a well-tailored suit. It’s like looking at art. From the fine craft of the suit and the colors used to the materials and the detail of the seam to the shoes and finely woven handkerchief, it tells a story.”

Kevin Patterson
Director of leadership development at Banner Health Kevin Patterson wears many hats: father of two, husband, businessman, and community activist (he’s involved in Equality Arizona and running for Phoenix City Council). Similarly, his style reflects his life – versatile and eclectic. He gravitates toward classic colors (gray, black and blue) but also loves to throw in pops of color, pairing timeless pieces with bright ties and patterned shirts. One of his many pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses often ties his look together. When it comes to fashion, he encourages others to be bold and courageous, adding that a great look can be as inexpensive or expensive as you’d like. And he means it; though Patterson loves Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and ties from Salvatore Ferragamo and Burberry, he believes the right look is often about attitude and how he wears it, and not as much about the brands. To that end, he rocks T-shirts from Urban Outfitters, H&M and Target, which he frequents with his kids. His fashion influences? The happenings of his everyday life. “One moment I’m in dad mode, the next I’m leading work meetings, and then off to a political event. I need to be able to add a blazer or tie, then switch to the rolled sleeves look, all in one day.”

CORRECTING YOUR RECEDING GUM LINE WILL RESTORE YOUR BEAUTIFUL SMILE!
Pinhole Surgical Technique® The painless fix for receding gums... in about an hour! A University Study revealed that 89% of patients over 20 years old have gingival recession. If you are concerned about receding gums due to gum disease or have gum recession because of aggressive brushing, smoking or medications, turn to Dr. Erik Svans for the Pinhole Surgical Technique®. This surgical treatment rebuilds the gum line without cut and suture surgery. You can walk out of our office with a beautiful new smile in a single visit! In fact, the Pinhole Surgical Technique® is often called the “Lunchtime Gum Lift” as it takes as little as an hour to perform and is done under local anesthesia so you can return to work after your appointment.
BEFORE
AFTER
Here’s what you need to know: • If the recession is less than 2mm, typically your dentist should closely monitor the tooth. BUT if the tooth is sensitive, un-esthetic, or the root structure is starting to wear away we can quickly and painlessly reposition the receded gum tissue to re-cover the exposed root surface with Pinhole Surgical Technique®. • If the recession is 2mm or more, the supporting bone for the tooth is already resorbing away, and corrective measures should be taken as soon as possible. Continued bone loss can lead to eventual tooth loss. Keeping “small problems small” is a philosophy of ours to maintain optimal overall health of your mouth and body. • Once bone loss occurs, it is impossible to re-grow, and as the gingival tissue recedes, both the supporting hard (bone) and soft (gingival) tissues are being lost that are vital to your Periodontal Health. Pinhole Surgical Technique® is a simple, quick, and effective treatment option for solving gingival recession problems. Dr Svans has been treating gingival recession using Pinhole Surgical Technique® since 2014 and has appeared on Channels 3 and 15 as an expert guest for Pinhole Surgical Technique®. He has treated over 1,000 teeth with this procedure, and is highly experienced in both the procedure, its outcome, and helping you maintain optimal gingival health by controlling the factors that lead to Gingival Recession in the first place.

out Dragoon Brewing Company – Tucson Though founder Bruce Greene brewed his first batch of beer in his kitchen in the mid1990s, it wasn’t until he brought on his son, Eric – who graduated from the Beer Judge Certification Program and studied at the American Brewer’s Guild – that Dragoon became a reality. In 2012, the Greenes, along with fellow homebrewer Tristan White, founded Dragoon, a self-distributing, draftonly brewery featuring just two beers. Within five years, Dragoon has grown to 30 different beer varieties, and its IPA is a recent recipient of Food & Wine magazine’s “best IPAs in America.” 1859 W. eer in Arizona is now a $1 billion industry, with more than 100 breweries statewide, and many popping up in just the past five years. Beyond the local favorites, there are some amazingly innovative beer makers in Arizona to consider visiting. And if you can’t get to them in person, each brewery has several options available at Total Wine & More and BevMo! as well as select restaurants across the Valley including Gino’s East, Southern Rail, Salty Sow, Taco Guild, Market Street Kitchen, Tommy Bahama and Carlos O’Brien’s, among others.
Mother Road Brewing Co. – Flagstaff The “Mother Road” was the moniker given to U.S. Highway 66 by Grapes of Wrath author John Steinbeck, as he shared the fictional story of a family who traveled the road in hopes of finding new beginnings. Mother Road Brewing Co. now resides along a portion of this storied road in Flagstaff, standing in homage to the lost highway as well as a symbol of owners Michael and Alissa Marquess’ journey to find their new beginning in the world of craft beer. Their recent success propelled them to open an 8,000-square-foot tasting room in mid-2016, and they expect to produce more than 20,000 barrels this year. 7 S. Oak Creek Brewery – Sedona The Kraus family, who learned how to brew beer in Germany, came to Sedona in 1993 with one dream: to open the area’s first-ever brewery. Opened in 1995, Oak Creek is not only the first brewery in the area, but also Sedona’s only microbrewery. The brewery has garnered national acclaim since 2001, when its amber ale was awarded the Silver Medal by the North American Brewers’ Association, and its nut brown is among Arizonans’ favorite local brews. With the Red Rock mountains as a backdrop, the brewhouse is a top tourist destination for visitors from across the globe as well. 2050 Yavapai Drive, Sedona; 928.204.1300; www.oakcreekbrew.com. Prescott Brewing Company – Prescott As the oldest continuously running brewery in Arizona, Prescott Brewing Company was founded in 1994 and has made a name for itself across the globe, garnering 32 national and international medals and awards for excellence in brewing, including at the North American Brewers Association National Competition, the Great American Beer Festival and the International World Beer Cup. In 2011, the brewery built a new off-site production plant to keep up with consumer demand, and then expanded again in 2015 to offer a slew of new canned beer options across the region. 130 W. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A CHEF? When I was 19 years old. I was tired of the small city living in New Mexico but I didn't want to go attend a university. I saw an infomercial around 3 a.m. featuring Scottsdale Culinary Institute. I'm really happy it put me on the road to working in this industry and has allowed me to meet such great people.
CHEF CONVERSATIONS
In the kitchen with Andrew Peña, chef at Casa Añejo Tacos and Tequila BY GABBY RICHMAN
TO YOU, FOOD IS… A way to connect with people. It’s a universal way to enjoy each other's company and something to put in front of your loved ones to make them happy. It’s also an expression of myself, the places I’ve been and things I’ve been through in my life.
THE ONE INGREDIENT YOU PROBABLY USE MOST IS… Bacon fat. IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF, YOU’D PROBABLY BE… Working with animals in some way, in a setting where they're healthy and happy. Maybe a tiger whisperer! WHEN YOU’RE NOT COOKING, WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU? At home. I like to garden, and I have some pretty great dogs and they mean the world to me. Spending time with my girlfriend as well – She's the best. WHAT FOOD IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? Totino’s Party Pizzas. They got me through culinary school at a dollar a piece. FAVORITE FOOD MEMORY: Walking with my older sister Amy to our favorite restaurant in my hometown of Alamogordo, New Mexico. It's called Si Senor. We went every single day one summer while my pops was fighting forest fires in Alaska. Their hatch green chile enchiladas (as hot as they can make them) are my favorite Mexican food. WHAT IS ONE COOKING TIP YOU CAN SHARE? Stick to the basics for seasoning. Try not to go overboard. Use salt and balance with your acidity. LET’S TALK ABOUT THE CASA AÑEJO MENU: The menu is full of classic [Mexican] dishes. We put a slight spin on a few things, but I wanted to be as traditional as possible on some. WINDSOR’S #63 Bring on the bourbon BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
F
or some, it’s all about that bass. But when it comes to Windsor’s #63 cocktail ($10.50), it’s all about that bourbon. “From day one, our drink program has centered on paying homage to classic cocktails of the Prohibition era and shining a light on the spirits as the stars of each cocktail above all else,” explains Brent Karlicek, beverage director of Upward Projects, the parent company of Windsor. “The #63 is our version of the Brown Derby, made famous in the 1930s.” The Brown Derby is itself a play on a De Rigueur, which made its debut in the 1920s and featured whiskey, grapefruit and honey. “Los Angeles hotspot Vendome Club started playing with the recipe, eventually swapping out the whiskey for bourbon.” Like Vendome, Windsor uses bourbon, opting for Buffalo Trace’s McAfee’s Benchmark for its sturdy palate and oaky, even finish. “It stands up to the ripeness of the freshly squeezed pink grapefruit and sweet silkiness of the local honey,” Karlicek says. Both elements are added to the bourbon in a mixing glass with ice and shaken. The cocktail is strained into a coupe glass and finished with a squeeze of the grapefruit peel on top. The result is sweet, spicy and smooth going down. 5223 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; 602.279.1111; www.windsoraz.com.

This private Southwestern hideaway delivers the ultimate outdoorsman’s experience while retaining a luxury feel at the upscale mountain lodge. Days are spent among the nearly 5,000 acres of uninhabited wilderness (of which guests have private access), filled with wildflower-rich meadows; a four-mile stretch of the legendary Brazos River; a resident elk herd; two lakes; and forests of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, blue
spruce, oak, conifer and aspens. Elevation ranges from 8,000 to 10,000 feet, offering a welcome reprieve from the Arizona heat. Fly fishing guides supply all of the equipment and gear to lead private catchand-release fishing adventures through the river’s headwaters. As one of the few fishing streams on private land and controlled by private ownership, the Brazos

River is known for producing trouts including brook, rainbow, cutbow, German brown and cutthroat. From first-timers to experienced anglers, excursions are tailored to each guest’s skill level. After a day of exploration, guests retreat back to the upscale, six-bedroom mountain lodge tucked within the ranch’s sprawling wilderness. A stay at the lodge includes a private, on-site chef who prepares gourmet meals each day using local and indigenous ingredients. Guests visiting Brazos River Lodge can fly commercially into the Albuquerque International Sunport, just over a threehour drive, or via private aviation into Taos Regional Airport, a two-hour drive. The fly fishing getaway package is available June 15 to Aug. 15 and is $6,000 per day for a group of six guests (weekends only); special set-up is available for corporate and team-building retreats. hough Western influences abound in the Valley, it’s been a long time since pistols have been drawn on a dusty trail outside the saloon. The focus is geared more toward Southwest sophistication, with the area’s high-class luxury resorts and five-star dining. But make no mistake, the Old West is alive and thriving. While you’ll find no shortage of Bentleys, Porsches and Ferraris around town, at the Arabian Horse Show – hosted at WestWorld of Scottsdale earlier this year – the lots were overflowing with heavy-duty trucks. Sumo-sized pickups pulled enormous trailers, looming over mere sedans and sports cars and competing for bragging rights for the biggest, strongest and most capable.

While Chevrolet, Ram and GMC all offer three-quarter and one-ton pickup trucks, the Ford F-250 Super Duty King Ranch is the 900-pound gorilla of the bunch. It’s been completely redesigned for 2017 with an all-new aluminum body structure and is available in 44 configurations – including two- or four-wheel drive, single or dual rear wheels, and a wide choice of cabs, bed sizes, trim levels and engine choices. Ford certainly has the market covered, owning the title of bestselling truck for 38 straight years. I drove the top-of-the-line Super Duty King Ranch, powered by a 6.7-liter diesel with 440 horsepower and an unholy 925 pound-feet of torque. The towing capacity of 15,000 pounds is easily enough to tow the largest horse trailer. Inside, the King Ranch is luxurious enough to make Bentley owners jealous. Trimmed in rich, embossed Mesa leather, the saddlery is beyond comfortable. But most impressive are driver-aid enhancements that differentiate the Super Duty from its competitors. Those include 360-degree cameras that give a top-down view and reverse guidance for trailer connecting. A blind-spot information system with a trailer tow provides up to 33 feet of visibility to monitor areas that otherwise may not be visible to the driver. Overall, there is little to dislike about the Super Duty. Perhaps the biggest plus is the absolute fun of driving such a large, capable, luxurious, wickedly gorgeous truck — and the fact that I got to pretend I was a wealthy cowboy for a week, driving a luxury truck in the “West’s Most Western Town.”

enues across the Valley are taking many of men’s most beloved classic cocktails – think Manhattans, the OldFashioned, martinis – and giving them an updated twist for today. Here are some of our favorites to treat yourself (or your man) to this month:

Holy Smokes! Or in the case of the Hole-in-the-Wall’s St. Louis Pork Ribs ($25.95), holy smoked. After applying a dry rub of brown sugar, cumin, chilies, salt and pepper, Executive Chef Rebecca Tillman slow cooks the ribs four to seven hours in a cast iron smoker that dates back to the 1940s and uses local mesquite wood – some cut right on property – to elicit a distinctly Southwestern flavor without too much spice. Guests can add any of the restaurant’s three homemade barbeque sauces – including a moonshineinfused offering – and three sides, with choices ranging from macaroni and cheese and smoked potato salad to green chile creamed corn, to complete their plate. TACOS TEQUILA WHISKEY
The triple threat makes its way to Arcadia BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTOS BY AWE COLLECTIVE
H
ailing from Denver, Colorado, the one-time Mexican street food truck-turned chef-driven, sit-down neighborhood restaurant, Tacos Tequila Whiskey, opened its doors in Arcadia last month, tapping into the already-booming foodie crowd. “We really wanted to create a place where families could come in on the weekend for brunch and at the same time, that young, foodie couple could stop in for a few drinks before they hang out for the evening, grazing their way through our tacos and cocktails, or hopping around to neighboring bars” explains Tacos Tequila Whiskey owner Kevin Morrison. And as you can tell from the name, it’s clear what the concept of the eatery is, with a menu solely concentrating on tacos with unique twists.
“It’s all about the tacos,” Morrison explains. “We’ve really gone deep into the cuisine of different states in Mexico and given it an update, our own spin.” One unique item you’ll find on the menu is beef tongue and cheek. This adventurous choice also joins a variety of staples, so there is something for every eater. Another menu highlight? “I’m so excited about the lengua we’re doing,” Morrison says. “It’s triple cooked, so we boil it, braise it and then crisp it up. Then we take guajillo chiles, mix in some honey, and make a really nice crema to top it all off.” With an already-lengthy list of accolades, unique ambiance and abundant happy hour offerings, the restaurant’s collection of small-batch tequila and UPTOWN |

whiskey also leave little to be desired. Bar Manager Gerard Collier took the same approach behind the bar as the chefs did in the kitchen, classic Mexican cocktails with a twist. “Phoenix is the perfect playground for cocktails,” Morrison explains. “You’ve got all these great distillers, just like Colorado, and the produce — melons, citrus, all of it! We’re really trying to use as many local products as possible.” Just like the cocktail and food menu at Tacos Tequila Whiskey, there’s nothing basic about the design of the restaurant. “None of our restaurants are cookie cutter,” Morrison says. “They all feel like Tacos Tequila Whiskey, but they’re all different. And for Arcadia, we have this awesome artist coming in and doing this giant custom mural in the middle of the place. It’ll totally be the focus of the restaurant.” The eatery is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays; and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays. Located at 3950 E.
