It’s that time of year again, where we focus our attention on our annual “Man” issue. This June we are making things manlier than ever, with almost every section geared toward the guys. From a cool, upscale toolbox (page 53) to a sleek watch with yachting in mind (page 47), that’s just the beginning of it. There is something about a man who knows how to dress. It sends a certain message to the world that he is just as polished on the inside as he is on the outside. We are featuring quite a few stylish guys who are communicating just that. For starters, our cover feature Kenny Lange worked his way up in the retail industry (Ralph Lauren) and now he’s moved back to Phoenix to let his creativity continue to grow. As the owner of WAYL.A. studios, Lange helps people’s ideas come to life. We talked to him about his journey from the clothing world to creative business on page 24. Additionally, on page 27, you’ll find eight stylish dads (in honor of Father’s Day). These proud papas are gushing over their favorite activities to do with their kids and the best parts of being a father, as well as spilling all of their style secrets. Some additional highlights include beauty products for boys (men deserve to be pampered too!) on page 50, workout styles (page 48), mancessories – accessories for men, get it? – on page 49, and decor for a dapper office (page 51). When it comes to food and drink, check out page 41 for must-try local java joints, page 58 for a cocktail inspired by The Big Lebowski, and delicious doughnuts on page 60. We are also featuring the new SanTan Bewery on page 66 because who doesn’t love a cold beer on a hot summer day? Best,

A LIFE IN FOCUS
Photographer Jon Linton uses art to give a voice to the homeless The artistic endeavors of Jon Linton have taken interesting twists and turns in the past 20 years. From a career with Ralph Lauren to helping those on our Valley’s streets, he has now carved out perhaps the most unique of humanitarian efforts. Linton is originally from Chicago and became interested in
photography when his mother purchased a Minolta analog camera. “This was in the 1970s,” Linton recalls. “I remember it was a nice camera and I probably shouldn’t haven’t have been futzing around with it. I’d often sneak it out of the house and use up all her film.”

Pulse UP CLOSE After graduating from Eastern Illinois University, he took a job as a marketing director with Ralph Lauren. “Ralph wanted to create apparel for golfers that looked more interesting than what was available,” Linton explains. “He put together a small team of people he felt was capable of helping him with that.” Linton grew up playing golf and was flattered to have been chosen for a job he still considers one of his great accomplishments. While working with Ralph Lauren, Linton moved to the Valley in 1989. In the mid-to-late 90s, he grew tired of traveling, transitioned to the art business and founded art magazine, ArtBook of the New West. “I picked photography up as an instrument strictly to create, as I was immersed in the arts for such a long time,” Linton says. Although Linton loves landscape and black-and-white photography, a few years later he was compelled to begin a new mission, inspired by a friend who became homeless and ultimately lost his life. Linton had thought of doing something in honor of his friend, but hadn’t acted on it until he found himself in a friend’s art studio in New Mexico. That friend pushed Linton to pursue a photographic homage. “He said, ‘Put a camera in your car and go take some pictures!’” Linton recalls. The first photograph Linton took that night was a Vietnam vet panhandling. He approached the vet in a dignified way and introduced himself. “I told him I was working on a project for people in need and I didn’t want to use the word homeless,” Linton explains. “I told him I wanted to give people on the street a voice.” When Linton introduced himself, he asked the man’s name and the vet began to weep, saying it had been a long time since anyone had asked him his name. “I started taking photographs of people living on the street in an effort to pay honor and provide remembrance to a friend who lost his life, while giving a voice to those that are voiceless,” he explains. The encounter led Linton to capture more photographs, eventually becoming the I Have a Name exhibition and movement that serves as an advocacy. The photo exhibition has traveled around the Western U.S. and its next stop will be at the Arizona Historical Society for a six-month exhibit beginning November 2018. “This is an exhibition that creates awareness,” Linton adds. The I Have a Name project also collaborated with artists Wayne Rainey and Brian Boner to create a powerful mural on the monOrchid Building on Roosevelt Street in the Phoenix arts district. A Facebook page helps to push awareness through social networking. “By doing outreach on the street as an organic outflow of the photographic exhibition and exhibition travel to a few places, the social media platform now has the largest and most engaged audience that provides a voice for the homeless, no matter the organization,” Linton says.

In the hope that people would do more than like and share on social media, Linton designed a T-shirt that says “#LetsBeBetterHumans.” He made 50 of those shirts and sold them to help provide Christmas meals to the veterans on the streets in Phoenix through nonprofit MANA House. The Southwest Institute of Healing Arts has provided the project with a bus that serves those on the street. The bus carries the “Let’s Be Better Humans” slogan that is a simple, but profound statement meant to inspire, motivate and produce change. It serves those living on the streets by providing supplies and serves as an outreach. The vehicle also makes appearances at social activism activities like the Pride Parade, the Women’s March, Phoenix March for Our Lives rally and the Red for Ed movement. “We hope that the bus brings people together with the ‘Let’s Be Better Humans’ message,” explains Linton. “That’s the message of hope.” As a way to continue to express his creativity and escape briefly from heavier subjects, Linton indulges in breathtaking landscape photography, particularly in the Southwest. “Photography on the street is very painful,” he finishes. “But, perhaps these endeavors will change the public’s perception in a small and humble way.” For more information, visit www.jonlintonphotography.com.

Video doesn’t kill radio star Benjamin Tietgen
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
Upon first impressions, Benjamin Tietgen seems to be the typical, mild-mannered attorney and family man you see on the streets and in the boardroom each day. “Don’t forget proud nerd, too,” says Tietgen, a partner at Quarles & Brady in Phoenix, focused on ultra-techy niches of intellectual property such as cryptocurrency and cloud computing. But, don’t let the day job fool you. When not busy as a dad or lawyer, Tietgen is part of Phoenix’s FCC-licensed, community-run nonprofit radio station, KDIF 102.9 LPFM. “The Local Community Radio Act of 2011 opened the airwaves for community platforms to wedge onto the radio dial between the commercial conglomerates,” Tietgen explains. “Licensed through the Act, KDIF is a hyper-local media outlet amplifying the voices of community members and advocates and sharing the knowledge, talent, and insight coming out of Phoenix and its arts and education communities." Tietgen is not only a board member for the station, but helped build its facilities from scratch and is now one of its disc jockeys. “I co-host Surf & Skate Saturday, which is on weekly from 1 to 3 p.m. We play the unlikely combination of surf rock – think Beach Boys – and skater music,” Tietgen says. His musical talents stretch far beyond his time on the radio. “While in law school at Arizona State University, I formed a band with some classmates, and we still play together more than 10 years later.” Called The Vanjacks and with Tietgen on the bass and vocals, the bluesy rock band is influenced by Queens of the Stone Age and the Black Crowes. They’ve played a host of local venues including Valley Bar, Last Exit Live, and Wells Fargo Arena (on the steps outside), and released an album of some of their original songs where Tietgen did the cover art. “Now, if I can just get us on KDIF,” Tietgen jokes.

Thomas Kaufmann brings the OTOjOY listening experience to everyone
BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
As founder and chief technology officer of OTOjOY audio technology company, Thomas Kaufmann is making a difference for those with hearing loss and those who want a better listening experience. Kaufmann relocated his company from Santa Barbara, California in 2016 when he observed that Phoenix was very accessible to those with disabilities. He was further inspired when he met Phil Pangrazio, president and CEO of local nonprofit Ability360 and saw what the organization was doing. “They have three fitness centers in the Valley with adaptive equipment and the video tour of the main facility was quite impressive,” Kaufmann recalls. When Kaufmann realized that 20 percent of the population is affected by hearing loss, he knew something had to be done. “Some people don’t have their own hearing aids or cochlear implants and some people can’t hear because they can’t afford to hear,” he explains. “Hearing aids are expensive and health insurance doesn’t always cover them.” For those with mild or moderate hearing loss, going to a theater, church or government meeting is challenging. “We were thinking, ‘Why can’t we use smart phones to pick up the sound from a hearing system?’” A phone doesn’t have that capability so Kaufmann created LoopBuds, which have a special cable that can receive a signal and send it into the phone. The signal is processed by the LoopBuds app, playing it back for the user. LoopBuds won a 2018 CES Innovation award, a 2018 Edison Award and was a finalist in 2018’s Mobile Global Awards. The technology is universal, but a venue needs infrastructure to support it. Phoenix has 28 venues, including FilmBar and Phoenix Convention Center, that are capable. Locally, OTOjOY has put a LoopBuds system in at Crescent Ballroom as a donation to the community. Additionally, Kaufmann is working with the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Adult Loss of Hearing Association in Tucson. “Together, we’re in the process of launching a Loop Arizona public awareness campaign modeled after the Loop California campaign we created five years ago,” he says.

Pulse HIS STYLE
FASHION IN FLUX Form follows function for artist Brian Szczech
BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
Brian Szczech doesn’t consider himself a disciple of fashion, but his style follows in the footsteps of his work as founder and artist at Flux Design Studio. “I’ve been told that I look like a member of Jane’s Addiction,” Szczech says. “I have a little bit of a rocker style mixed with some bohemian.” Due to the nature of his job, Szczech wears jeans frequently – even in the summer. He looks for thinner, lightweight fabrics for comfortable jeans as an alternative to shorts. His go-to brand is Buffalo. Though a day-to-day jeans and T-shirt kind of guy, Szczech is known to switch things up on the right occasion with friends. “Over the years, we’ve gone to different festivals and gatherings – things like Burning Man-type events,” he explains. “I’ll wear a fuzzy vest, a tutu, some crazy jeans, or wild boots and a top hat.” Instead of following the trends, Szczech follows his inner compass. “I just wear on the outside who I am as an artist inside. I like to be comfortable in both skins,” he says.
What is Flux Design Studio? My son Devin Szczech and I build interior design products. We do wall sculpture and free-standing sculpture. We also fabricate furniture for designers as well as lighting and fireplaces for architects and builders in the Valley. The average home value we work on starts at $1.5 million. What are your favorite materials to work with? We work with metals and specialize in on-metal finishes, like patinas. We use steel, brass, copper, and various wood species. My old company, Concrete Interiors is now a sister company and we make a lot of concrete furniture. What do you love about your job? After having a company with employees, I wanted to rediscover myself as an artist. Over the years we’ve met great designers, architects and builders, and now we can be more selective with jobs.

HER STYLE
JET SET SENSIBILITIES Comfort is key for Michelle Moore-Fanger’s on-the-go lifestyle
BY BRITTANY MARONEY / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
Urban chic yet comfortable is the name of the game for Michelle Moore-Fanger. As the vice president of Laboratory Corporation of America and founder of local nonprofit Mother’s Grace, Moore-Fanger’s fashion sense naturally lends to understated, polished ensembles. Though she goes for a clean, professional look during the week, the avid hiker and yogi swaps her Jimmy Choo and Prada pumps for Lululemon joggers and sneakers on the weekends. “I wake up and pick what I am going to be most comfortable in and something that will express how I am feeling that day,” she explains. Moore-Fanger frequents the airport so it’s important to her to be fashionable while still remaining practical. She gravitates toward simple, elegant handbags from the likes of Stella McCartney, Gucci, and Prada. “I need something that is like a tote as I travel every week for business and it needs to fit my MacBook,” she says. “Lately I’ve been keeping my eye on a classic Fendi (vintage) to wear with all white.” Though she likes specialty shops such as Vince and Burberry, Moore-Fanger has been a loyal customer (and previous employee during her college years) to Nordstrom since 1985. “Nordstrom is my favorite place to shop, they have everything, and they have the best customer service,” she says.
What shoes do you wear off the clock? For fun, I’ll wear a wedge from Vince or my favorite PAOLO that are a wedge tennis shoe. You can literally run through airport in them! Since I grew up in Oregon, I also have a lot of Nikes. What do you wear for a night out? I tend to wear a lot of black. I always feel like Johnny Cash! I keep it simple with black skinny jeans and a good Vince blouse, maybe I’ll throw on a colorful bomber jacket to add some personality. Fashion icons: Lauren Hutton, Cindy Crawford, Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock.

Kenny Lange can make any idea come to life at WAYL.A. Studios
In some iteration, you may have heard this quote leave the lips of a parent, friend or mentor – “The day you stop learning is the day you stop growing.” Kenny Lange, a born and raised Phoenician, is no stranger to this sentiment. In fact, his intellectual curiosity, or hunger to learn, is the catalyst for his successes in the fashion and retail industries. Lange had a pretty solid upbringing in Phoenix with good friends and a family that cherished spending time together. Some of his fondest memories include Sunday tennis with his dad and twin brother at the Arizona Biltmore, orange wars in the citrus groves, and selling Christmas trees
24
Uptown June '18
at Whitfill Nursery during his winter breaks from school. Home is where the heart is, and for Lange, that’s right here in the Valley. “I enjoy the ease and quality of life here,” he says. “I also really love how Arizona has developed a sense of identity and civic pride.” During high school and then college at Arizona State University, Lange worked at Biltmore Fashion Park’s Ralph Lauren. His creative mind found high school and college curriculum somewhat antiquated. Eager to learn something new and totally different and gain real world insight, he turned to retail.
“Ralph Lauren taught me things that were a part of the adult life like how to dress and interact with successful and educated people. It also taught me the history behind clothing since I was learning about patterns, fabrics, tailoring, color stories, visual merchandising, styling and window art.” Lange adds, “It was incredible; I got paid to learn, basically.” At work, Lange took on a whole new persona. He would dress to the nines, rub elbows with the elite, like Stevie Nicks and Alice Cooper, and assist all types of people from around the world. Ralph Lauren’s main goal is to create a world that everyone
aspires to be a part of, and Lange considered himself extremely fortunate to already be a part of it as a sales associate in his early twenties. In an effort to learn more and dive even further into the retail world, he applied and got accepted into Ralph Lauren’s highly competitive and extremely rigorous Executive Training Program. The one-year corporate retail training program took the recent college grad to the fashion big leagues, a.k.a. New York City. “My training, which focused on retail (buying, planning, operations, and visual merchandising), centered around the inception and launch of Rugby,” he explains. Lange was perfect to help launch the Rugby line since he was familiar with Ralph Lauren and embodied the brand as a young, educated, preppy (yet edgy) professional. After completing his training program and helping to open 14 domestic stores nationwide, he was hired as the creative coordinator of the flagship store in New York City. This position led to manager and eventually director of creative services where Lange oversaw all Rugby visuals (windows, interiors, styling, concepts and training). After five years in the Big Apple, he moved to Los Angeles to continue his work with the company and be back on the West Coast, which he desperately missed. Shortly after moving, Lange launched his own creative company called WAYL.A., an acronym for What Are You Looking At? Lange and his team of artists blend the line between art and commerce by designing retail merchandising with purpose. They tell stories with just the right amount of lighting, styling, custom builds for store displays and clothes. The concept blossomed between 2011 and 2012, coming to fruition in 2014. Some of his clients include Under Armour, The North Face, Sportiqe, Robert Graham and Specialized. WAYL.A. Studios — as Lange likes to call it, “the creative house of worship” – is a recent extension of WAYL.A. The Studios serve as the company’s world headquarters and admin office, operating out of two massive rooms in the Paris Dry Cleaning building on 7th Avenue in Phoenix. Translation: Lange has moved back home full time. “I tried the dual city living situation between Phoenix and L.A., but it was just too much work,” he explains “I’m on the
road a lot for installations and Arizona was always the place I wanted to come back home to.” WAYL.A. Studios’ primary goal is to make anyone’s ideas come to life. Whatever the market calls for, The Studios will accommodate with creative services like development and design, styling, visual merchandising, project management, installation and execution. Not to mention prop rentals for special events, such as weddings, private dinners, retail pop-up shops, showrooms, editorial photoshoots and more. The sky’s the limit here, and that’s exactly how Lange intended it to be. “Everything is changing today, and retail is incredibly fast and multifaceted,” he says. “To have a place where we can
help curate many different ideas and experiences to me feels appropriate. We need to be able to change at the drop of a hat. We need to embrace the importance of experimentation within retail and fashion so that conversation is had. The idea is to create healthy friction as friction creates fire, and fire creates energy.” The creativity for this creative never shuts off, as he admits that he finds his work fun. But on the off chance that he isn’t building a visually stimulating narrative with his team, you’ll find this Phoenician watching (and cheering for) the Phoenix Suns and hanging out with his 7-year-old French bulldog, his fur child, Knuckles. busy lives, but need to look good doing it,” says Pelosi. “I am honored that they trust me to always provide them a great selection of cutting edge apparel that makes them feel confident, young, and ready to take on the world. I think they love my attention to detail and how I never have the same selection week-overweek. Everything I choose to place on my racks is beautiful and unique. Just like the women that frequent my boutique.” It has always been Pelosi’s passion to make women feel youthful and beautiful, so when a few of her loyal clientele confided
in her their difficulties with getting the perfect spray tan, she stood up and took notice. Just a few years earlier her family had experienced a devastating loss due to melanoma, a type of skin cancer. A staunch advocate against the damaging effects of sun rays, she knew there had to be alternatives. After a relentless search she found an amazing solution to the current modern day spray tan. An option that was void of the long-lasting chemical smell so prevalent in spray tanning, as well as being organic, gluten-free, paraben-free, and vegan. The revolutionary spray gun technology allows Pelosi to spray up to 6 inches away from the skin, creating a sculpting effect, and never
spots or runs. It’s guaranteed to be the best spray tan you’ve ever had. “When women feel their best they can focus on the things that matter most, whether that’s their family, their profession or their passions,” says Pelosi. “The last thing they should worry about is how they look. It’s incredible to free them up from those concerns and send them off with an air of confidence. That’s when I know I truly have done my job.” To learn more about Boutique Bully, visit www. boutiquebully.com or to setup an appointment with a Bronzed by Bully spray tan you can text (602) 410-8818 or book on www.bronzedbybully.com. Mike PRIVERT Children: Lucas, 8 months Occupation: Owner of Speks What’s a typical day like for you? The day always starts at 5 a.m. trying to sneak in a little mediation, a walk for the dogs, or work before everyone in the house gets up. With running a business, the workday is always packed with meetings, client follow-ups, and putting out fires. Typically, I'm home by 6 p.m., and each night I get to put my son to bed with a bottle and a book. Best thing about being a dad: Working with my wife on raising a great son and actively participating in his development and growth. What activities do you enjoy doing with Lucas? Every Saturday, Lucas and I get to spend the entire day together, just the two of us, so we get to grow and bond with one another. Also, nightly family walks with our two cocker spaniels, Bella and Marley. Describe your style: Clean, classic and sharp. What’s your go-to look? A button-down shirt, dress pants, and lace-up Oxford shoes. Must-have item: Hanz de Fuko Claymation hair wax. What is your top fashion indulgence? A tailored slim-fit suit. Favorite brands: Bonobos, Hugo Boss and Banana Republic. Most prized possession in your closet: A T-shirt from my time working at the CIA. What do you hope Lucas learns from you? How to be a great husband and father. How do you balance work and fatherhood? I really look at work and fatherhood as two integrated parts. Being a father and running a business are a reciprocal relationship that I’m always working on.

James HOLMES Children: Jon Zachary (JZ), 3 Occupation: Psychologist in public service and private practice What’s a typical day like for you? I finish my CrossFit workout before the sun comes up, get ready before anyone else in my house, tell my son and wife goodbye, and head to work. In the evenings, I love to spend time kicking the soccer ball with my son or having a date night with my wife, then I catch up on the news and sports and check my email one more time. Best thing about being a dad: Hearing my son say, “I love you, Daddy” and giving me a hug. What activities do you enjoy doing with JZ? JZ is at a fun age where I can teach him sports. I enjoy taking him on a stroll in his wagon, playing at the park, cheering him on at swimming or karate class, and, most recently, hunting invisible zombies around the house. Describe your style: Tailored, versatile and comfortable. What’s your go-to look? On the weekends, you can find me in a slim-fit V-neck, joggers, and slip-on shoes. However, Monday through Friday is a bit more refined. Must-have item: A nice watch. What are your top fashion indulgences? A stylish bow tie, nice shoes and a laundered, slim-fit dress shirt. Favorite brands: Lululemon and Mack Weldon. Most prized possession in your closet: A classic pair of shiny, black Versace loafers. What do you hope JZ learns from you? How to be kind and respectful toward others. How do you balance work and fatherhood? I think it’s important to separate work and family life as much as possible. I try to put the computer and phone away, pay attention, make eye contact, and engage with my son. It’s not always easy, but, ultimately, your family is more important than any work-related email, text message, or phone call.

Pineapple Triangle. No, it’s not the latest and greatest fruit-infused sparkling water flavor. It’s actually an event — the biannual market exclusively showcases local goods by local artisans. “Historically, pineapples have been used as a symbol of hospitality. The symbol of a triangle means change in physics. We combined the two concepts to form Pineapple Triangle, which means welcome change,” Desiree Byrne, partner of Pineapple Triangle, explains of the name. “We love the innovation and creativity that our artists bring and welcome the change and progress their small businesses experience by participating in our show.” Every event held offers an array of handmade and custom-designed pieces that emit a Phoenix vibe. “Each show has a different lineup of artists, so there are always new and exciting pieces that haven’t been seen before,” explains Byrne, who is also the owner of Street Market, which is the parent company that organizes and hosts Pineapple Triangle as well as other popular Phoenix events such as Front Porch Pickens. “We have a great lineup for June, which includes artisans that specialize in custom pottery, leather goods, artwork, jewelry, soaps. specialty confections and foods, plants, clothing, home decor, and more.” Not only are you having fun by attending, but you’re also giving back to the Phoenix community simultaneously. Twenty percent of all purchases and tickets sold at each Pineapple Triangle event go back to a local nonprofit. For the June market, the company is partnering with St. Vincent de Paul as their nonprofit beneficiary. Their programs include services for the homeless, medical

and dental care for the working poor, transitional housing shelter and more. “People love to be a part of something bigger than themselves,” Byrne explains. “We provide a great experience that enables our fans to truly make a difference while indulging in the live music, scrumptious food and bar, and one of a kind shopping. And speaking of live music, St. Nick & the Sounds will be returning to the event after rave reviews at last year’s market. The event, which was founded by Maggie McGrath in 2014, is always held in Downtown Phoenix. “We love Desoto for its history (built in 1928!), urban chic decor, and diversity of food and beverage options from their restaurants that are locally owned and operated,” Byrne says.

This high-performance instrument can record race times; track lap and split times; and record, replay, delete and recover time-related information from a regatta. Beyond that, it can be paired with a smartphone to enable data transfer and receive notifications. Visually, it’s futuristic and high-tech with a lightweight titanium case and a sturdy strap. 2018 FORD MUSTANG GT The American classic debuts a refresh with updated styling and more power BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS: Base price: $35,190
It’s 1964 and Ford Motor Company’s thenVice President Lee Iacocca introduces the new Ford Mustang at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York. That same year, Dick Dale and His Del-Tones release the single Wild, Wild Mustang. An icon was born. More than 50 years later, the first muscle car is not only still here, it’s actually gotten stronger and faster, and it’s still a car people vie to own. The current generation that debuted for 2015 has received a refresh for 2018, with improvements including revised exterior styling for a more aggressive appearance, extra power, better handling, and additional technology. My test car – the Mustang GT Premium powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 engine – has also been revised, delivering more horsepower and torque than previous models. My GT came equipped with the new, optional 10-speed automatic transmission. An upgraded six-speed manual transmission is standard. The Mustang goes from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds. It also came with the optional Performance Package, adding a firmer suspension with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S performance tires on
19-inch ebony black multi-spoke alloy wheels, additional engine cooling, and a Torsen limited-slip differential. An $895 optional feature called Active Valve Performance Exhaust lets you select between varying levels of exhaust volume, including normal, sport, track and quiet modes. Inside, changes are minimal. The new 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster offers various screen layouts, 26 color options, and displays for up to eight gauges. Putting the GT through its paces on twisty canyon roads, the car was more than impressive with sharp precision handling on tight hairpin corners with the massive tires firmly gripping the asphalt. Straightaways arouse a magnificent, intoxicating noise while power dilates in range through the hefty quad exhausts with blazing power pushing you firmly back in the heavily bolstered bucket seats. Large Brembo brakes are simply stupendous. Today, the Mustang is a horse of a different color than Ford originally imagined. But it’s still alive and kickin’ and the kind of car people still dream about.
Price as tested: $50,160 Engine: 5.0-L V-8 Horsepower: 460 Fuel economy: 15/25 mpg city/ highway Seating: 4 Fab features: Sinister looks Monstrous V-8 power Great-sounding performance exhaust

HERE FOR THE BEER Big boy brews bursting with flavor
Today there are more than 100 breweries statewide, up from 30 just a few years ago. The movement is so popular, in fact, that nearly every grocery store, liquor store, bar and restaurant in the Valley carries a selection of local brands. Among the many Arizona-made brews, we found eight “big boy beers” – those with high alcohol by volume (ABV) and/or outrageous flavor – to try this summer.
NAUGHTY NARANJA 1912 Brewing Co. This Born & Brewed People’s Choice Award winner is an imperial gose (a top-fermented beer) with a punch of citrus so strong you may think you’re drinking a screwdriver or a mimosa. Every sip begins with coriander on the nose and finishes with a heavy helping of tart blood orange flavor. ABV: 8.5%. www.1912brewing.com. WHITE RUSSIAN IMPERIAL STOUT SunUp Brewing Co. A must-try dark beer, this stout has plenty of body and a full mouthfeel that embodies huge notes of coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and caramel combined with rich fruit undertones of plum and raisin, which are highlighted by the use of dark, roasted malts. ABV: 9.4%. www.sunup.beer. RUM BARREL-AGED BIÈRE DEL BAC Dragoon Brewing Co. This Belgian-style quad is made with piloncillo sugar and dark Belgian Candi Syrup, but don’t let the sweet-sounding ingredients fool you. They lend complexity to the flavor profile, but above all the beer boasts out-of-this-world peppery spice and spirit notes as it’s aged in rum barrels. ABV: 10.1%. www.dragoonbrewing.com. F.Y.I.T.M. (FIGHT-EM) DOUBLE IPA The Shop Beer Co. Though it has an extra hoppy nature, The Shop Beer Co.’s double IPA manages to remain drinkable and balanced. Grapefruit and citrus undertones burst on the tongue, and the higher-than-average ABV will certainly sneak up on an unsuspecting imbiber. ABV: 10%. www.theshop.beer.

SHOT IN THE ARM IMPERIAL STOUT McFate Brewing Company Aged for one year in Old Forester whiskey barrels, this heavy, double-mashed imperial stout is not for the faint of heart. The warm, rich flavors – amped up by the whiskey – work even in the summer months, but it’s ideally best at dinner versus by the pool given its high alcohol content. ABV: 14%. www.mcfatebrewing.com. COFFEE CHOCOLATE MEAD Arizona Mead Company Made from fermented yeast, honey and water – and often also fermented with fruits, spices, grains and hops like beer – meads are a trendy cousin to traditional brews. This stunner is flavored with notes of bitter dark chocolate and coffee and balanced with smooth vanilla. ABV: 14%. www.azmeadco.com. TAILDRAGGER HOP SNOB Saddle Mountain Brewing Company “Hop heads” from across the country come to Saddle Mountain for this showstopper. A West Coast IPA, it is brewed with five varieties of hops and presents with fantastic character throughout. It is both crisp and bold with a bit of grapefruit and is dry on the finish. Its ultimate goal – to make its drinkers “hoppy.” ABV: 6.5%. www.saddlemountainbrewing.com. LOST HIGHWAY DOUBLE BLACK IPA Mother Road Brewing Company Expect an espresso-colored head, followed by an enticing aroma of orange zest and roasted malt. Bitter notes of orange and chocolate balance hints of sweeter dark caramel in every sip. ABV: 8%. www.motherroadbeer.com.

DUDE! BRO…
The Bar shakes up a manly movie-inspired coffee cocktail
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
With a subtle nod to the pop culture hit, The Big Lebowski, The Bar is a friendly neighborhood joint that strives to always provide the very best guest experience, great food, and satisfying drinks in a casual and welcoming environment. The Dudebro ($10) is one cocktail that exceptionally fits in line with the movie and it’s white Russian-loving protagonist “The Dude,” who was famously played by Jeff Bridges in the cult classic. The base of the cocktail is Absolut Vodka, which is made by blending vodka with only natural flavors – and no added sugars. “We add the vodka to the shaker along with St. George Spirit’s NOLA Coffee Liqueur, a robust spirit that has all the flavor of cold-brew coffee,” says Gabe Chavez, mixologist and bar manager. “Think of it like Kahlua’s big brother.” Chavez then adds in Bailey’s Irish Cream, the iconic Irish whiskey- and creambased liqueur, for richness and sweetness. “But don’t be fooled by the taste! In fact, at 17 percent alcohol by volume, it’s a sneaky strong addition to any drink, despite its sweet flavor,” Chavez warns. While many drinks containing Bailey's then have something added to balance the alcohol – such as a lemon, bitters, or soda – this is not the case with the Dudebro. “Literally, this is a cocktail made entirely with spirits,” says Chavez, who takes all the ingredients and shakes them hard until he gets a tiny froth at the top of the shaker. Finally, he strains the contents into a highball glass over ice and garnishes it with edible espresso beans for texture. The Bar Phoenix, 3174 E. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Vince Mellody
Vince Mellody is the chef and owner of the Br , a globally inspired restaurant that recently opened in the Coronado historic district.
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
When did you know you wanted to be a chef? I think it was when I was working at a sushi restaurant and started to learn and recognize the difference between cooking and cooking with purpose and nuance. To you, food is… Fun. Food brings people together. When you’re not cooking, where would we find you? Probably riding my bike around town, snacking here and there or catching up on chores at home. What food is your guilty pleasure? Grilled bologna sandwich with Miracle Whip, yellow mustard, and bread and butter pickles. Favorite food memory: One of my first was watching my grandpa make barbeque sauce from scratch when he realized he ran out of the bottled stuff. I didn’t know you could do that. Anything you have been working on? I’ve been interested in skin lately, trying to make it extra crispy or puffing it. Especially for our roast duck. One recipe I’m still playing with for fun is octopus chicharones. Do you have a favorite thing to cook? I love to cook eggs. There are always new ways of cooking eggs I haven’t learned yet. Tell us about the menu at Br : The menu consists of small plates and platters inspired by multiple styles of cuisine. The easiest way to describe it is non-Spanish tapas. What has surprised you about owning your own restaurant? I knew from the start I was in a great neighborhood, but I was surprised how instantly welcoming and supportive the community has been. The most underrated dish on the menu is… I would say it’s a tie between the Onsen Egg and the Butter and Radish. They are both very simple, but unexpectedly very flavorful. HOLE-Y MOLY!
Get your sweet fix at eight local doughnut destinations
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
The Local Donut
While also a bakery and pastry shop, doughnuts are the clear star here. According to Buzzfeed, The Local Donut is the top spot for doughnuts in Arizona, featuring both traditional options as well as what they call “fancy doughnuts” on the menu. These dazzlers run the gamut from creme brulee to salted caramel to peanut butter and jelly varieties. They also have croissant doughnuts, more commonly known as cronuts, available each weekend, with both Nutella and vanilla bean options. 3213 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; 480.500.5236; www.thelocaldonutshop.com.
Masterpiece Donuts & Coffee
To say owners Tom and Sheri Schrader are doughnut-obsessed is an understatement. In fact, Tom claims he developed a daily doughnut habit that lasted three decades before he and Sheri made the jump into opening Masterpiece last year. Their concept allows guests to “customize the canvas” that is a basic doughnut, giving patrons 90 seconds while their vanilla-based doughnuts are made fresh to choose glazes, icings and other yummy treats as toppings. Taking this concept even further, there's also a semi-private “Artists Corner” inside where children are able to work on arts and crafts projects. 3950 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; 602.633.1550; www.masterpiecedonutsandcoffeeplus.com.
BoSa Donuts
BoSa Donuts
They’re doughy and delicious. They’re sweet and scrumptious. They’re glazed and gooey. They’re doughnuts! With more than 10 billion of these treats enjoyed each year in the U.S. alone, olykoeks – as they were first called when Dutch settlers brought them stateside in the early 1800s – are not just tasty, but big business. So, which local businesses should be on your go-to list when you need your sugary-sweet fix? Here are some of our favorite makers of doughnuts whether they are iced, powdered, chocolate, jellied, baked or fried.

Uptown June '18
While the theme at these shops – which are now 12 strong in the Valley and counting – is no frills, the doughnuts will make you rave nonetheless. BoSa doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel but, instead, focuses on the dough, and it shows; they have the airiest, fluffiest dough around. Don’t expect seasonal flavors or out-ofthe-box toppings. Instead, just order tried-andtrue glazed or sprinkle doughnuts and let them rock your world in the simplest-yet-most-satisfying way ever. They are also open late, most until 10 p.m. or even open 24 hours a day, so you can stop in (or use the drive-thru) whenever you have a craving. Multiple locations; www.bosadonutsaz.com.
Crave Grounds
Remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books from your youth? This hot spot features this same concept, except with doughnuts. They offer guests the chance to customize their own made-to-order mini doughnuts, allowing you to mix and match frostings and toppings at will. Of course, they also have a long list
Nami tSoft tServe and Coffee
This concept was inspired by “tSoynami,” which is the owners’ own homemade, vegan “tsoft tserve” (the actual proprietary name and made with soy) ice cream brimming with all sorts of goodies like cake, cookies, chocolate or peanut butter stirred in. For their doughnuts, Nami expands this concept into baked treats, crafting 100 percent vegan doughnuts with similar vegan ingredients mixed into the dough, squeezed inside or added on top. Daily fried vegan options include blueberry, banana nut, and cookies and cream. There are also fritters, specialty maple doughnuts, and even gluten-free vegan options, which change daily. 2014 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 602.258.6264; www.tsoynami.com
Jewel's Bakery
Nami tSoft tServe and Coffee
of creations they’ve come up with, including birthday cake, apple pie, Oreo, and salted pretzel options, if you’re having trouble choosing. 10105 E. Via Linda Road, Scottsdale; 480.307.9373; www.cravegrounds.com.
This bakery was initially born out of necessity by one very determined mother. Owner Julie Moreno developed the concept when her daughter, Sophia, developed severe abdominal issues. When Sophia found relief by cutting all gluten from her diet, Julie sprang into action. After experimenting, she developed dozens of sweet and savory recipes for her daughter, each gluten-free. Word spread, and Julie eventually opened Jewel’s in Arcadia to help others like her daughter. And while not strictly a doughnut shop, those seeking a truly fantastic gluten-free goodie will love the cinnamon, chocolate or vanilla with sprinkles options as well as the special-order pistachio, s’mores and Fruity Pebbles varieties. 4041 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix; 602.714.5243; www.jewelsbakeryandcafe.com.
Rollover Doughnuts + Coffee
Like the other best shops in town, Rollover Doughnuts, which shares its space with Short Leash Hot Dogs in Downtown Phoenix, makes everything from scratch daily. But, unique to Rollover is the dough. They use brioche as the base for everything, from basic vanilla- and chocolate-glazed options to their more complex offerings, which include an orange-glazed doughnut topped with chopped pistachios and a chocolate chip cookie dough doughnut with a salty-sweet brown sugar glaze. They also have their own doughnut food truck available for parties, catering and special events. 110 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix; 602.795.2193; www.shortleashhotdogs.com.

The Original Rainbow Donuts
This family-owned and -operated shop, which differs from the franchise by the same name, opens at 4 a.m. to ensure they can offer even the earliest of risers something special to start the day. Baked fresh daily, they feature traditional favorites such as the bear claw and French cruller as well as cronuts, maple bacon beauties, and even some infused with fresh whipped cream. Another reason to love them: Doughnuts left unsold are donated daily to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul or to a local church. Two locations; www.theoriginalrainbowdonuts.com.

CRAFTING A COMMUNITY SanTan Brewing Company opens in Central Phoenix
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
More than 10 years ago, SanTan Brewing Company opened its doors in Chandler’s historic downtown district, just in time for the recession to ravage Arizona. “Sometimes we don’t know exactly how, but we persisted,” says founder and brewmaster Anthony Canecchia. “Not only that, we were in on the ground floor of the Arizona craft beer revolution that’s happened over the past decade.” Many folks, in fact, credit SanTan for helping to start the revolution. “We had a vision from the onset: to both make craft beer that locals could be proud of as well as to give the community a space that paired the beer with great food and ambiance,” Canecchia explains. On the beer side, SanTan has taken home local, regional and national honors for its brews, including earning top honors at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival, 2012 U.S. Open Beer Championships and 2016 World Beer Cup. To that end, the craft beer vision has not only met, but exceeded all expectations. And from the community side, with the opening of SanTan’s new Central Phoenix location, their full vision is now in focus.

“Our Uptown location has all of the flagship menu items from Chandler, including our Ricky Ricardo sandwich, award-winning chipotle bacon cheeseburger, and of course, our beers,” Canecchia says. Among the ultra-popular varieties available in-house are: Devil’s Ale, an American pale ale with aromatic pine and citrus notes; HopShock IPA, a Southwestern India pale ale with an intense aroma of apricots and peaches; Mr. Pineapple, a wheat beer infused with fresh pineapple juice from Fair Trade Costa Rican farms; Gordo Stout, a dry Irish stout with robust flavors of coffee and chocolate and injected with nitrogen; and MoonJuice IPA, their acclaimed Indian pale ale. Sex Panther, Oktoberfest Lager and LimeLeaf will be available seasonally. The team’s “Pilot Series” specialties including their StrataBlaster IPA and Yotes Pale Ale, currently only brewed in Chandler, will also make appearances on the Uptown menu while a small brew system is being installed this summer. Once installed, the system will allow the local brew team to create beers unique to just the Phoenix location. “Along with our beers, our drink lineup also features Arizona wines, a margarita made with Arizona native Roger Clyne’s Mexican Moonshine and even Peixoto Coffee Roasters cold brew coffee out of Chandler,” Canecchia says. The space itself is 7,000 square feet, and they plan to complete their dog-friendly patio by the late fall. Friday through Sunday, they offer breakfast. There is are traditional happy hour specials Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and reverse happy hour Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to close. SanTan is open Sunday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. SanTan Brewing Company, 1525 E.
