THINKING OF LEAVING YOUR GOLD & SILVER COINS TO YOUR HEIRS? 1
2
3
I have a collectIon of rare coIns and precIous metals. I am plannIng to leave them to my heIrs. Is thIs a good Idea? A: I hear this often from my clients.
There are several reasons they give me for wanting to do this. 1. They don’t want to deal with the coins and feel the heirs are getting them for free and can deal with these investments when the time comes. 2. Many investors own rare coins they have losses in and they don’t feel like taking the loss. 3. Other clients simply state that leaving gold or silver to their loved ones is a smart way to transfer wealth. I deal with heirs who end up with coins they know little about, so I see both sides of this issue. Leaving rare coins to an heir, who is not interested can be overwhelming. Usually the person who bought the coins is better equipped to handle the transaction rather than leaving the heir to figure out. Many heirs simply want to turn the coins or precious metals into cash and don’t know how to get the most money for them. I suggest talking to your heir(s) and asking what they would prefer.
I bought my precIous metals and coIns as protectIon agaInst a devaluIng dollar and I Want to pass them along for that reason. What Is the best Way to do that? A: If you wish to leave precious
metals or coins to your heirs I recommend making it simple for them. Leave Bullion bars or Bullion coins such as US Gold Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs or a variety of coins that trade based solely on their precious metal content is a great choice. This makes it easy for the heirs to value and sell the items if they wish and they are not burdened by trying to figure out collector values.
What do I do If I already oWn rare or semI rare coIns? A: You can trade them for bullion
items or just cash out. Rare coins can be mind boggling for someone who knows little about them. If they sell to a pawn shop or dealer who knows they are not knowledgeable, they may get much less than what the coins are worth. At American Federal Rare Coin & Bullion we liquidate rare coins and trade for bullion type coins for many clients. We understand how to sell rare coins and get top dollar. Rare coins are not as liquid as Bullion bars or coins so it’s better to trade for gold or silver bullion if that’s what you intend to leave. American Federal has been helping investors simplify their portfolios for over 35 years and we’re happy to assist you as well.
If you have questions or concerns about your investments please contact us for a complimentary Portfolio Review. We will tell you exactly what your coins are worth and suggest suitable options. You can decide what serves your interests best. Call American Federal Rare Coin and Bullion at 480-553-5282 for a complimentary Coin Portfolio Review. Reach us by email us at info@americanfederal.com

MICHAEL FITZMAURICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board Certified Hand Surgeon
Between regularly sending emails and text messages on your smart phone, spending hours gripping the steering wheel in rush hour traffic, and playing hours of tennis on the weekends, your hands are locked in an endless cycle of repetitive motions that typically go unnoticed until pain sets in. Soreness at the base of the thumb, pain, or a clicking, snapping, or locking sensation while the thumb is in motion could be a sign of trigger thumb. Trigger thumb can result from tendon inflammation due to repetitive gripping motions, or from an underlying medical condition like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice has pioneered a minimally invasive procedure to treat trigger thumb in Arizona without the need for complicated and invasive traditional surgery. The EndoTech® Endoscopic Trigger Thumb Release system was designed by Dr. Fitzmaurice and is available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute. EndoTech® uses a small incision and an endoscopic technique to fix the injured tendon in an outpatient procedure. With EndoTech® , you’ll be back in motion, firm grip in tact, in no time!

uring a time of the year when most people flee the city, in search of cooler temperatures, there are some people that are still in Phoenix braving the heat. One of them is our cover feature, Debbie Stantus (page 24). She sticks around to help those in need – serving as the corporate development manager for Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation. Stantus spends her time raising funds for the hospital by securing and developing partnerships with corporations to make the programs at the hospital possible, improving the lives of the children inside the hospital walls. We spoke to her about her 10+ years in the nonprofit sector, her mother’s mantra that inspired her to dedicate her life to giving back, and never accepting “no” as an answer. If you’re interested escaping the heat – even just for a few days – we have some exciting vacations for you. Looking for a day trip? Check out page 32, where we are highlighting six exciting statewide events to check out. Or, perhaps you need a road trip for a couple of days. On page 37, we are covering all that Valley Verde has to offer – think a glamorous hotel, cooling off on a kayak adventure, wine tasting and more! Lastly, if you really want to head out of town, there’s always the famous Hotel Del Coronado, located on Coronado Island in California. We’re talking the historical hotel and its surroundings on page 46. If you’re staying in town, we’ve rounded up the best barbeque (page 64) to celebrate summer and some tropical, refreshing cocktails (page 62) that will make you feel like you’re miles away, relaxing somewhere on a beach.

I recently got pulled over for suspicion of driving under the influence. What are my rights during a DUI stop?
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Gabby Richman CREATIVE DIRECTORS Lalo Reyes Anthony Cox
Contrary to popular belief, it is not illegal to drink and drive. It is only illegal to drink and drive if the alcohol, drug or medication is above the legal limit and/or impairs you to the slightest degree. Here are a few things to remember if you are stopped for suspicion for DUI:
CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Alison Bailin Batz, Emily Glynn, Sara Goodwin, Elizabeth Liberatore, Brittany Maroney, Laci Stilwell
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT
A lot of people believe that being courteous and cooperative with the police means answering all their questions and doing everything they ask you to do, but it is important to remember that you have the right to remain silent. Any statements you make can be used against you – even if you admit to only having a couple glasses of wine with dinner.
PHOTOGRAPHY Ben Arnold, Elizabeth Barry, Claudia Johnstone, Mark Morgan, Debby Wolvos
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO AN ATTORNEY
You also have the right to talk to an attorney. Once you have invoked that right, the officer should then stop asking you questions and provide you with access to a telephone (and a phonebook if necessary) to call and attorney within a reasonable time.
ADVERTISING COORDINATOR Samantha Lapid sam@richmanmediagroup.com
DO I HAVE TO TAKE THE BLOOD OR BREATH TEST? This is one of the most common questions I get from prospective clients. The answer in most cases is yes, you should, or you may face the loss of your driving privilege. Officers must obtain the blood and/or breath sample within two hours of driving. In Arizona, if you are lawfully arrested by a police officer who has reasonable cause to believe you are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, then your consent to provide a blood or breath sample is implied. If you refuse the test, the Officer can get a warrant to get your sample and he/she can request that the Arizona Motor Vehicle Department suspend your driver’s license for at least one year.

#LIKEAGIRL “Anything” goes for this Ironwoman BY SARA GOODWIN PHOTOS BY MARK MORGAN
Finding your way in life can sometimes be hard. For Teri Twarkins Kelley, she has scouting to thank for finding her anything and everything in life. Girl Scouting, that is. “I started with my Brownie troop in second grade, and the courage, confidence and character I learned at even that young age transformed my life. With these ‘Three Cs,’ I knew I could do anything,” says Kelley, who would earn a Girl Scout Silver Award – their second highest honor – before she left for college. continued… JULY 2017 |

up close The first major “anything” she did after Girl Scouts was running Division 1 track and cross country for the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “Two-a-day workouts and year-round competitions made the college experience very full,” says Kelley, who earned a degree in communications with an emphasis in public relations when she wasn’t busy running laps. The next “anything” took courage not many people have in their early 20s – moving across the country, from her home in the South to Arizona. And doing so based simply on a book. “As a little girl I read a book about a girl who lived in this cool town called Tucson, a city no one in the Southeast really knew at that time, save for perhaps college basketball,” Kelley explains. “So when I graduated, I contacted a friend from Arizona State University I had met in college, who helped me make Arizona my home.” Once she made her way to Arizona, she would embark on her next “anything.” “I got my start in public relations and marketing, and then eventually moved on to product management. After I earned my MBA at ASU in the early 2000s, I jumped in head first with a complete career change,” says Kelley, who became a financial advisor for then-Smith Barney, now Morgan Stanley. And she didn’t just become a run-ofthe-mill advisor – she worked her way up to senior vice president, and now serves as a corporate retirement plan director. Kelley also dipped her toes back into Girl Scouting, volunteering as a troop leader with the local Arizona Cactus-Pine Council, which serves more than 20,000 girls in grades K-12 in the region. “As I tend to do – both literally and figuratively – I took the volunteer position and ran with it, eventually joining the council’s board of directors in 2008,” Kelley explains. She would also get back into actually running that same year after being diagnosed with osteopenia, a type of bone deterioration that is the precursor to osteoporosis. “As if I would let anything stop me from living my life.” About 18 months after her
diagnosis, Kelley completed her first Ironman, which included a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run. This race, which helped her stave off the symptoms of the osteopenia, led to four more such competitions over the next three years, including participating in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii in 2011. So, after all this, Kelley must have been satisfied – and ready to take a break from anything? Not by a longshot – in fact, the two biggest “anythings” in her life (so far) were still to come, in the form of having her children and embarking on the Girl Scouts’ local Campaign for Girls, an ambitious, multimillion-dollar fundraising campaign to make it possible to significantly expand and enhance the Girl Scout experience for more girls, culminating in the building and opening of a center for UPTOWN |

girls and women in Arizona. “In spring 2017, we did it, opening The Bob and Renee Parsons Leadership Center for Girls and Women at Camp South Mountain, an $18 million ADAaccessible year-round urban program center with camp appeal, with space for large and small meetings and trainings; tent and cabin camping; a demonstration kitchen and kitchen garden; two pools; a Girl Scout museum and shop; staff office; a playing field and archery range; campfire circle; and labyrinths,” says Kelley, who not only served as the local Council’s treasurer during the campaign, but today is the organization’s board chair. So, what’s next for Kelley? “In case you missed it, I am up for anything,” says Kelley, noting the 2018 Boston Marathon is pretty high on her to-do list.

A LOVE LIKE NO OTHER
Christine Johnson finds a way to capture life’s most precious moments BY EMILY GLYNN PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
W
ith the relatively recent influx of photo sharing apps, photographer Christine Johnson couldn’t help but notice how our newfound obsession with scrolling through social media has begun to overshadow the practice of creating tangible manifestations of our lives and memories. Her solution? The Love Letter Book (www.theloveletterbook.com), a beautifully handcrafted photo album intended to eternalize the life of a loved one over the span of twenty-some years. The idea is heartwarmingly simple. Each book, bound in Japanese silk and German linen, includes the physical photo album, two pens, letter paper, preadhered envelopes and photo corners. Once a year for 20 years, a single, epitomizing photograph and an accompanying handwritten letter is added to the book, until the time finally comes to gift it away. “We can easily see how far we have come through moments of loss, excitement, challenges… the list goes on and on,” says Johnson of The Love Letter Book, often a powerful compilation of the years and details we tend to forget. “It slows us down. [And] that is always a good thing.”
Etc.
How has being a photographer influenced your perspective? When I decided to become a photographer, I was a single mom with a lot of fear about the future. [Now], I look at what incredible opportunity it has provided me; a home, an artistic outlet that pays my bills, the blessing of being able to integrate myself into others lives [and] the knowledge that my work can actually make a difference. If you could keep only one photo forever, which would you choose? I have a photo of me laying on the sofa holding my son as a young boy. I didn’t get ready for it. I probably thought I looked terrible then, but now I see how happy I was and peaceful he was. UPTOWN |

MASTERING THE FAMILY CRAFT
Keith Horn hones in on his art BY BRITTANY MARONEY PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
A
s a child, Keith Horn believed he could build anything with his hands. It was a lesson he learned from his grandfather, a skilled woodworker. Horn never found that same passion for wood but he did find his craft in Scottsdale bike shop Sucker Punch Sally’s. Steel, aluminum, brass and copper soon became his world, inspiring him to open Horn Metal Craft art studio. “Honing my craft took a lot of time and practice,” he says. “It’s not just cutting and welding. It’s math, geometry and a whole lot of troubleshooting. It’s not easy chasing the next project and executing it in a timely fashion, especially when you are a perfectionist like me”. Horn’s work can be seen in and around the Phoenix area, including in his custom pieces for Pedal Haus Brewery full remodel and specialty pieces for local eatery Postino. “I have nothing but respect for my grandfather, he truly was a master of his craft,” he explains. “Now I am the one that gets to inspire others with my creations. It’s a cool feeling.”
Etc.
Have you ever tried to work with wood? I don't really work with other materials but have a good group of guys that do some amazing work with concrete and wood and I try to collaborate with them whenever I can. What do you love about Phoenix? Phoenix is such a diverse place but so unique for a large city. It’s still growing but there is that small town feel, and I love being inspired by both the scenery and the art being created here. Are there any local artists who inspire you? Bang Bang designs is a very talented group. I even draw some inspiration for some of my larger pieces form super small pieces, like jewelry from Mother of Gideon. JULY 2017 |

CLASSICALLY A CHARISMATIC Sasha Howell embodies undeniable sophistication through her timeless silhouettes and zesty personality BY EMILY GLYNN PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
s the director of client services at Off Madison Ave, Sasha Howell spends much of her time locked in collaborative discussion, working hard to make others twinkle and shine. Her own star, inherently bright, is another story. For as long as she can remember, Howell has exuded a strong sense of self and larger-than-life personality, two traits that led to the evolution of her classically unique wardrobe. “I love minimalist, modern design,” she says of her style inspiration. “Not the cold, unfeeling modernist look, but … the clean lines and attention to detail that can make simple pieces have such a strong impact.” The new mom, who welcomed baby Harper just last year, indulges this admiration for the contemporary by exploring her up-and-coming North Central Phoenix neighborhood alongside her husband and their daughter, equipped with a great pair of shoes and more recently, a pop of color. “I’m wearing much brighter colors than I did before,” she reflects fondly. “I think that’s influenced by all the fun, colorful clothing I pick out for my daughter.”
What makes you unique? That’s a tough question! I graduated with a degree in creative writing with [an] emphasis in poetry. While I don’t use those skills for work, I continue to write poetry and short stories as a creative outlet. Where can we find you on your day off and what are you wearing? If it’s early on a Saturday, you’ll find me at the farmer’s market. Otherwise, you’re likely to find us having brunch at St. Francis or exploring any one of the new restaurants in our neighborhood. Either way, I’m probably wearing a pair of Jack Purcell Converse sneakers. Which summer trends are you most looking forward to? I love the super bright colors trending this summer, especially the goldenrod yellow. The energy and optimism is exactly what we need to keep our minds off the heat! UPTOWN |

ratitude. It’s the first thing to cross Andy Van Y’s mind each morning before sifting through his closet to prepare for a chaotic day at TEK Systems, the IT consulting company where he serves as the director of business operations. “I wound up in the position I’m in today from the investment and dedication of truly special people in my life,” he says. “I always want to exude gratitude and joyfulness and my hope is that my style communicates that.” From sun up until sun down, Van Y oversees the careers and subsequent success of TEK’s 50-plus-person office, empowering his team to take pride in their appearance. “We’re a sales organization,” he stresses. “Every detail, all the way down to your clothing choices, is critical.” He leads by example, opting for bright colors and custom suits from menswear clothier J. Hilburn. As for his inspiration? Van Y, forever humble, never fails to give credit where credit is due. “[My grandfather] dressed very sharp,” he remembers. “It was enough for me to notice and think, ‘wow, that’s the definition of being a professional.’”
BLESS UP
What would we be surprised to find in your closet? You would find a plethora of cowboy boots and overalls. I’m a Texan. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Being truly joyful in everything that I do and always maintaining that perspective. We have so much to be grateful for. Any time with my wife Andrea and son Jax are some of the most joyful times in my life. What are you most passionate about? My faith. That has always been what [defines] me. I would not be who I am without the grace that has been extended to me and that will always be my passion. Where did you last travel to? Vail, Colorado. It is where my wife and I got engaged and it is by far our favorite vacation spot. It’s a very special place for us.

Debbie Stantus’ career of creating a community of caring
When Debbie Stantus was a small girl growing up in the hills of Tucson, her mother had a saying. She spoke about having an “attitude of gratitude,” a slogan that Stantus would adopt as her own personal mantra. It’s that motto that she carries with her into every business meeting, executive lunch and phone conversation. Stantus serves as the corporate development manager for Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation, one of the most recognized and respected children’s hospitals in the country. It’s not an easy job but with enthusiasm and candor, Stantus raises funds for the hospital by securing and developing partnerships with corporations in the mission to help the Valley’s most vulnerable residents – the children. Her strategies are pure and simple. She develops programs that depend on the philanthropic giving of UPTOWN |
Phoenix’s business leaders, while blending cause marketing strategies, to achieve their business objectives. With more than 10 years in the nonprofit sector, Stantus has dedicated a large portion of her life to giving back to the community and driving change for the small patients that inhabit the halls of the hospital. The work she does in her current position at the foundation is something she says she is incredibly proud of. “Knowing we provide life-changing care to so many children – and more than that – hope and healing when they need it most, means everything to me,” Stantus says. “Without these business partners, our patients would not be able to continue their education at our 1 Darn Cool School while in our care. kid in our playrooms. Community support is what makes those programs and services possible.” Stantus meets with some of the largest and smallest organizations in the Valley, looking for ways to help drive philanthropic giving. She admits that over the course of her work it’s been the business leaders and their employees that often surprise and inspire her. She has seen firsthand what charitable giving programs can do to create collaboration and loyalty within organizations. “I am extremely passionate about making a difference and fulfilling this in a way that creates a win-win partnership is a dream come true,” Stantus explains. “It’s so powerful to see businesses choose philanthropy as a way to improve their communities and their organizational culture. Their customers and employees become more engaged, funds are raised for the hospital, and both of our organizations become stronger over the life of the partnership. It’s truly a miracle to watch. “ Stantus began her charitable career early on – serving in civic, charitable and leadership groups from middle school through college. After graduating from Arizona State University with a degree in communications and theater, she became immersed in the nonprofit fundraising world, starting with a camp in northern Arizona called Anytown – a youth leadership program that trains students in diversity and inclusivity and helps teens gain a better understanding of culture and identity. The camp caters to a diverse group from all walks of life. The daily teachings and exercises opened Stantus’ eyes to the importance of equality and how every person should be treated fairly — regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, disability, or orientation. “Anytown gave me perspective about how fortunate I was to come from a loving family, but how critical it was to live a life of gratitude and help those from different backgrounds,” she recalls. “I saw bullies realize the impact of their actions and change their ways, and watched gang members transform into kind individuals before my eyes. Bonds formed with people whose lives would have never crossed had it not been for this place of inclusivity. It taught me how one person can and should change a life.” UPTOWN |

Stantus would later revisit the camp as a counselor, then as an advisor and again as the camp’s community outreach coordinator. Each time she attended, she experienced the same profound, eye-opening lessons. It was this camp that would solidify her love for giving back and the experience led her to pursue a career in the nonprofit world to continue making a difference. Stantus began her career at Desert Botanical Garden and then Florence Crittenton of Arizona prior to climbing her way up the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation ladder (she started as a cause related marketing coordinator). She also served as a member of both Valley of the Sun Active 20-30 Club and Junior League of Phoenix. Between booking meetings, giving hospital tours and racing up office elevators to the next big meeting, Stantus does try to find time to relax. She spends her free time with her husband, perusing their local farmer’s market or enjoying a glass of wine on their favorite patios in Arcadia. “It can be challenging to find balance,” Stantus admits. “I have always been so passionate about what I do and laser-focused on my career. I love my job and become emotionally invested in the important work we are doing. That can be hard to walk away from at the end of the day. As they say, it is both a blessing and a curse to feel everything so deeply. A personal goal of mine is to continue striving for more balance. I know that the more fulfilled I am outside of work, the better and happier I will continue to be at my job.” Described by her co-workers as driven, passionate and with a knack to connect with successful, dynamic people, Stantus is a force to be reckoned with. She fears little and isn’t dissuaded by the dreaded two-letter word, no. Last year alone, Stantus, in collaboration with the foundation’s partners, raised over $1 million for the hospital’s patients. “You have to have passion, heart and tenacity to do this job,” she explains. “In the fundraising world, you will get told ‘no’ many times before you get a ‘yes’ and that cycle continues no matter where you are at in your career.” So how does she carry on until she gets the “right” answer?
“You have to be able to keep pushing forward, toward your goal, no matter what,” Stantus says. “I do it for the kids and I keep that in mind every time I make a phone call or take a meeting. If you can keep the faces, the families and the results in mind, fundraising can be truly rewarding.” Thanks to her tenacity, Phoenix Children’s Hospital is going through an exciting time. This fall, the hospital will open its brand new Emergency Department and Level 1 Trauma Center, along with a new Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders. Additionally, the hospital is also hosting its annual KTAR Give-AThon, a two day on-site broadcast and fundraising telethon hosted by KTAR 92.3 FM and Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. Last year, the event raised a record-setting $1,585,441, much of it from Valley business owners. “It is my mission to continue bringing on new corporate allies and strength the relationships with our current business JULY 2017 |

partners, who frankly are just amazing,” Stantus says. In September, Phoenix Children’s Hospital will be kicking off its annual Time to Shine campaign – a fundraising movement between businesses, communities and individuals who unite in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In December, they “Ignite Hope” for the families of patients, with a candlelight walk to the Hospital. The event’s mission is to bring together corporate sponsors and thousands of community members to give hope to the hospital’s patients during the holidays. “The need for our care continues to grow every day,” Stantus explains. “That need requires more funding, sponsors and donations so that we can continue to give the absolute best care for our families. While it can be daunting to know so many more children will need our care, it is what drives me every day to keep doing what I do. All with my attitude of gratitude.”

A VERDE VALLEY VACAY A
summer escape to Verde Valley is one of Arizona’s best kept secrets. With tourists opting to visit during other seasons, the summer is prime time to explore Sedona, Oak Creek and even Cottonwood – and at a great rate.
Stay – L’Auberge de Sedona Lauded as one of the most luxurious boutique hotels, L’Auberge de Sedona – nestled on the banks of Oak Creek – is an intimate retreat offering both traditional lodge rooms and extravagant (and quite romantic!) cottages, each of which includes an outdoor, open-roof cedar shower and a cozy fire place. Of particular note on property are the two dining options – Cress on Oak Creek and Etch Kitchen & Bar – both designed to infuse the incredible creekside location into the culinary experience. Etch offers a more casual option while Cress takes guests on an epicurean adventure, with three- and four-course tasting menus boasting Food Network-worthy delicacies.

This summer, L’Auberge is offering the Cooler by Nature package, which includes a two-night stay, a $300 credit to L’Apothecary Spa, a $200 credit to Cress and a $150 credit for a spa activity, including the new star bathing option for guests to meditate and admire the quiet, starlit sky. Adventure Company offers kayak adventures – including one that ends at Alcanterra Winery for a tasting and vineyard tour – ranging from two to three hours, plus shuttle transportation. Guided trips are offered in both the morning and afternoons, and absolutely no experience is necessary. And though most tours leave from Sedona and take guests to the Verde River near Page Springs, there is also a tour available from Cottonwood, which takes guests along the Clarkdale portion of the river, offering just enough current for an easy and smooth ride. Both trips feature canyons, verdant forests, brightly colored wildflowers and a multitude of wildlife. www.sedonaadventuretours.com.
Sip – Old Town Cottonwood Over the past decade, the Verde Valley has seen the birth of nearly two dozen vineyards and tasting rooms nestled among the communities of Cottonwood, Jerome, Clarkdale, Camp Verde and Sedona. Visiting Old Town Cottonwood is one of the most convenient (and safest, since everything is within walking distance) ways to sample the best the region has to offer. Along Main Street, you’ll find tasting rooms for Arizona Stronghold Vineyards, Pillsbury Wine Company, Burning Tree Cellars, Merkin Vineyards Osteria, Small Batch Wine & Spirits, and Fire Mountain Wines. Tastings range from $10 to $15, and some offer chocolates, games and other treats to enjoy during the visit. www.oldtown.org.

CAMPFIRE IN A CUP
A cocktail that will leave you begging for s’more BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
W
hat better way to celebrate summer than with a s’more? An adult version, that is. New kid on the block, Camp Social, is serving a libation they call The Best Little S'more House in Phoenix. Does the name sound familiar? That’s because it’s inspired by the movie The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. General Manager Anthony Georgoulis chose to use fun puns, rhymes, and pop culture references in a benign and playful way for the menu. The cocktail ($9) offers a balance of liquor and the elements of a fireside classic — s’mores. “It includes all the components of the traditional s’more — graham cracker, chocolate, and the flaming marshmallows on top are fun,” Georgoulis explains. How exactly does the restaurant incorporate all of the traditional ingredients of the sweet treat? The campfire in a cup features marshmallow vodka, chocolate liqueur, melted chocolate, graham cracker crust and, of course, flaming marshmallows on top. This cocktail version of the classic camping dessert taps into both elements that the themed restaurant offers – fun and family, but also a nightlife component for adults. Right when you enter the eatery, you’ll notice the campy decor and immediately feel the nostalgic elevated outdoors atmosphere that the ownership was aiming for. S
outhern California is one of the most easily accessible summertime escapes for Phoenicians. The laidback vibe, the crashing waves, the sandy beaches … the coastal lifestyle is certainly alluring. Just 15 minutes from the San Diego International Airport, across the bridge and beyond the bustling downtown streets, sits quaint Coronado Island, which is dotted with charming homes, shops and restaurants among pedestrianfriendly streets. Though, perhaps, its crown jewel is Hotel del Coronado. Built in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977,
Hotel del Coronado, or The Del as it’s fondly called, is likely Coronado’s most beloved attraction, with its iconic red roof and Victorian-style architecture. Set on Coronado Beach, the AAA Four Diamond resort blends nostalgic charm with contemporary California luxury – and there’s no shortage of activities, especially during the summer.
Stay Upon entering the main lobby, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time, with a rich wood interior accented by a chandelier centerpiece and a historic Otis No.

61 elevator. In fact, it’s one of the oldest elevators in the nation and still requires an elevator operator. There’s an unmistakable sense of place, one where the past and present blend in luxury – and that’s only the beginning. The Del has a total of 757 guest rooms, including the renovated Victorian building, the contemporary California Cabanas and Ocean Towers, and the luxury villas and cottages at Beach Village – an ideal choice for families, special occasion groups (like wedding parties), or a romantic getaway. As the resort’s newest addition, Beach Village offers a more secluded and elite experience with a dedicated concierge, contemporary design, and even a separate entrance. You can book lodging of up to three bedrooms; all suites include living spaces and a gourmet kitchen. At this oceanfront oasis you most certainly get the VIP treatment, with access to a private, members-only beach area and clubhouse and the opportunity for private chef dinners or spa treatments in your suite, personal shopping services, and secluded pools. The summer starting rate is $425 per night and Beach Village lodging starts at $1,200 per night.
Eat The Del has an impressive array of food and beverage options, spanning a pizzeria and wine bar; a signature surf-and-turf eatery; a lounge with upgraded pub fare; a bakery; a beachfront venue specializing in Mexican fare; a casual breakfast and lunch spot; an outdoor bar with fire pits; and, most notably, the Crown Room, which serves an award-winning Sunday brunch. In fact, the Crown Room Brunch is a local favorite and a continual winner of San Diego’s best brunch. The Sunday affair is a feast for the senses, with multiple lavish food stations including a chilled seafood bar, carving and poke stations, traditional breakfast fare like omelets and waffles, international cuisine, housemade charcuterie, and a gorgeous display of fresh fruit. A dessert bar includes nearly any dessert you can dream of, from bread
pudding to cakes of all kinds. There’s even a build-your-own donut bar with a variety of donuts, sauces and toppings. Truly, it’s a brunch for the ages, especially if you book the VIP Chef’s Table. Here, you’ll sit at the center of the ornate room – beneath crown-shaped chandeliers, no less – and begin your experience with Champagne (unlimited throughout brunch) and a mixology demo. The experience continues with tours of the culinary stations, where you can pile your plate to your heart’s content, interspersed with tableside chef demos spanning four courses, including a reserve wine pairing.
Play Year-round, The Del offers a multitude of activities such as watersports like paddleboards, boogie boards and boat rentals; tandem biking; and spin and yoga classes overlooking the ocean. Not to mention The Shops at The Del (which total 17 boutiques), spa treatments, and swimming options including an adult-only pool. Of course, summertime brings additional programming (dates vary) including: Movies on the Beach: Watch a movie beneath the stars, and lounge in style by reserving a daybed or bonfire. Mermaid Fitness: Fulfill your Little Mermaid dreams with this water workout that encompasses swimming, core, cardio and strength training – all in a mermaid tail – and with plenty of time for photo ops. ROAST: Cozy up by a private beach bonfire with s’mores and gourmet treats. A California Clambake: On select Fridays, enjoy live entertainment, beach bocce ball, and a selection of local specialties, all steamed, boiled or grilled. Mermaid Camp: Young mermaids (and mermen!) can swim like mermaids, do arts and crafts, have story time and games, and enjoy themed snacks. A Winemaker Dinner Series: Indulge in a multicourse gourmet dinner paired with limited-release wines and the opportunity to meet the winemakers. Polo on the Beach: On Labor Day weekend, book a table or private box to enjoy polo matches, gourmet dining and fashion.

Beyond the Island Of course, San Diego is brimming with activities. You can museum-hop or park yourself under a tree at Balboa Park, explore art galleries and a variety of local food purveyors at Liberty Station, party way past sundown in the Gaslamp Quarter, or visit popular attractions like the USS Midway Museum and San Diego Zoo. Or, you can simply find your favorite beach and stay awhile. Though every city has its lesser-known haunts. An area sometimes overlooked by tourists – but beloved by locals – is Little Italy. Just a 15-minute drive from Coronado, this area has a multitude of inviting places to get your pizza and pasta fill. But for local flair, Kettner Exchange is a must. The restaurant, which boasts Little Italy’s only open-air rooftop lounge, is helmed by acclaimed Executive Chef Brian Redzikowski, who serves up creative tapasstyle dishes (plus mains) on a rotating menu of favorites that include a fois gras Cubano sandwich and big-eye tuna pizza. For post-dinner cocktails, take a 10-minute walk to San Diego’s first hidden tiki bar, False Idol, which is located through a refrigerator door (no, really!) at Craft & Commerce restaurant. Upon entering, you’ll be transported to a tropical paradise complete with a waterfall and volcano, tiki artifacts, and vibrant glass buoy balls that hang from the ceiling. The menu includes 36 tiki cocktails and 200-plus rare and vintage rums. Try one of the punchbowlstyle cocktails to see a show – upon ordering, False Idol’s volcano will erupt! Be sure to make reservations in advance as your name must be on the list to enter.

ire up your taste buds because it’s time to talk barbecue. There’s no shortage of the summertime meal staple in the Valley, meaning you can leave the smokin’ to someone else and dig right into savory cookout cuisine from nine grill masters.
BOBBY-Q Bobby-Q (www.bobbyq.net) was founded in 2005 by Bob Sikora, a barbecue aficionado who spent more than 10 years traveling the nation’s backroads to learn cooking techniques and secret recipes from smoke masters across the country. HOLE-IN-THE-WALL Housed in an original 1940s ranch house, Hole-in-the-Wall at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort (www.squawpeakhilton.com) offers one of the most authentic Southwestern barbecue experiences in Arizona. The cast iron smoker, which also dates back to the 1940s, uses only local mesquite wood – much of it sourced right on the property and in the surrounding area. The in-house team not only develops their own signature dry rubs for every piece of slow-smoked meat, but also crafts original barbecue sauces with sweet, savory and even spirited (yes, as in boozy) ingredients. ooking for your next beauty fix? Head over to recently opened Bluemercury. Located at The Shops at Town & Country, the luxury destination is a one-stop shop for all things beauty, offering experiential services such as makeup services, brow stylings, waxing, and facials, bringing tons of services and products to one place. “We chose Town and Country because it is so convenient to the best demographic in Phoenix,” explains Founder and Chief Operating Officer Barry Beck. “At Bluemercury, we embed ourselves into the communities where our clients live and work. Now the Phoenix customer can come to Town and Country and grab their groceries at Whole Foods, run their errands and then pick up their favorite luxury beauty products, and even have a quick facial, or just pop in to learn a new tip or trick.”
This is the second Bluemercury store in the Valley, the first being Scottsdale’s Kierland Commons. “It may surprise people that a company in such a glamorous business would be so data focused,” Beck says. “I spent a lot of time studying the customer information of our Kierland clients, and have found that almost all of them come from less than a 15-minute drive and are clustered immediately around the store, very similar to the behavior of our New York City customers. Opening a second store at Town and Country to serve the urban super women and the suburban power moms of Phoenix, where they run their errands, get their coffee, grab lunch and go grocery shopping, was a natural for Bluemercury.” Since founded in 1999, Bluemercury has grown into an iconic brand and UPTOWN |

The Phoenix spot, at 2,200 square feet, offers brands that range from La Mer and Skinceuticals to Trish McEvoy and Chantecaille, with product prices anywhere from $15 to $465. “Overall, we look for brands that have a distinctive point of view and long innovation runways of their own,” Beck explains. “They also have to have amazing quality and packaging. For us, partnering with brands is a long-term relationship. We’re not looking for the latest fad that’s hot this year and then gone. We want lasting, sustained quality.” Bluemercury also sells M-61 skincare brand and Lune+Aster cosmetics brand, which are exclusive to Bluemercury and personally created by Beck himself. Both of the brands carry good-for-you cosmetics and skin care products, with natural ingredients, and the brands strive to be vegan and gluten-free. Some highlights from the lines right now? M61 PowerGlow Body Butter, M-61 PowerGlow Eye, Lune+Aster RealGlow Bronzing Primer and Lune+Aster Sunset Bronze and Blush. According to Beck, in addition to its high accolades (the store was rated by Oprah Winfrey as one of the best facials in America), there’s a few additional reasons to pop over to Bluemercury instead of a department store or shopping online: its passion, advice-giving beauty experts, the ultra-convenience factor, and its personal aspect. “We are the authentic friendly neighborhood store and all of the pieces of our business build to create the neighborhood store,” Beck says. “Even with 140 outposts, we still have that mom and pop feel. I personally interview every manager that joins our team” The full-service store is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m Sundays. Located at 2021 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.840.9000; www.bluemercury.com.
