It’s August and that means that we are more than halfway through the summer heat. However, the high temps aren’t getting cover feature Kristen Keogh down. The outdoors lover enjoys all nature brings and isn’t going to let a little heat stop her. You may recognize Keogh from one of her many broadcasting jobs, because she’s doing it all – 12 News, Around AZ, hosting for the Arizona Coyotes games, and her new project Driven. Though she’s typically in front of the camera, you can also find her out in the community, inspiring women to connect and encourage one another with her venture, Here With Her. On page 24, she shares what got her to this point. If you’re like me and need a little break from the heat, turn to page 32 where you’ll find the best Arizona daytrips, or page 58, where we share meals worth the miles, whether you plan on doing a daytrip or staying overnight in the featured Arizona cities. Staying in town? Try somewhere you’ve never been! On page 66, check out the newest spot opening this month, Angels Trumpet Arcadia/Tall Glass and on page 53, we highlight a delicious toast from the new Provision Coffee Bar. And though it’s not a new spot, Pomelo at The Orchard does have a summer cocktail menu with a peach drink that is off the charts (pg. 56). For seasonal trends, Dwell (page 47) is going with the summer flow, Hamptons style. And page 38 has everything you need to wear on a sunny day. Or, maybe you’re feeling bold. Our fashion section, starting on page 40, highlights some bright, beautiful pieces from Lilly Pulitzer’s summer collection. Don’t be afraid to take a few fashion risks this season! Best,

A NEW ERA

Dr. Larry D. Johnson, Jr. inspires students and the community as the new president of Phoenix College Phoenix College just appointed its new president, Dr. Larry D. Johnson, Jr. The incoming president brings a multifaceted approach to higher education that incorporates an inclusive leadership style with the refreshing viewpoint of a millennial. He also recently moved to Phoenix and is discovering the cultural

and recreational opportunities in the Valley. The Florida native is a graduate of Florida A&M University where he majored in English literature. Johnson also earned a master’s degree from Florida State University in medieval to baroque studies and holds a Ph.D. in English literature from Clark Atlanta University.

Pulse UP CLOSE they can overcome adversity to achieve great things. He also credits his mother for instilling values of being a servant and empathetic leader. It was in high school that Johnson really became focused. “I always tested well in reading and English and I was a critical child,” he explains. “I thought I’d be an attorney. I always wanted to engage in critical inquiry and I questioned everything. Then, I began to love English.” He realized his teachers from middle school through college were not male and not black. He wanted to be the change. “I wanted to be an English teacher, so I could give back and show other young men and women of color that this is something that they could aspire to.” He abandoned the idea of a legal career and embraced a career that was perhaps unexpected.

Arizona Bound

Immediately prior to moving to Phoenix, Johnson was campus provost and campus chief academic officer at St. Louis Community College in Missouri. In 2015, he learned about the Valley when he was a candidate for president of academic affairs at Mesa Community College. “I was one of the final three candidates and I’ve known about this district,” Johnson recalls. Prior to his position at St. Louis Community College, Johnson was an associate dean of academic affairs at Broward College – South Campus in Pembroke Pines, Florida and prior to that, he taught at Georgia Piedmont Technical College and Tallahassee Community College. Johnson now becomes one of the youngest presidents to lead a community college in the United States and the first African-American to lead Phoenix College since it was founded in 1920. Johnson’s journey was not easy. At age 11, he lost his mother. “That transformed my outlook on life,” he explains of losing his mother, who had divorced his father and was raising three young children. “Where data would suggest that I would go into different avenues like drug abuse, I looked at the experience and I used the experience of my mother’s gift to be empowered to make her proud.” He made sure his siblings finished school and went to college. His sister is now a doctor of internal medicine and his brother holds an MBA and is a consultant for a German company. Johnson shares his story of loss and poverty to inspire students to show that

16

Uptown August '18

Johnson recently moved to the Biltmore area and is in the process of discovering the community. “It is close to the college and I can get there quickly,” says Johnson. “I also moved here at the tail end of Arizona Restaurant Week. I’ve had the opportunity to visit a lot of restaurants. My favorite top three restaurants are The Henry, Seasons 52 and Steak 44 for five-star dining. But, I’ve also fallen in love with Flower Child and Snooze.” Outside of work, Johnson has eclectic hobbies and interests, including theater, travel and cultural experiences. “I love museums,” says Johnson who has taught Western civilization. “I am fascinated by art, music, literature and philosophy. I always like to look at how different time periods are personified through those lenses.” He is enthusiastic about leading Phoenix College and has a distinct interest in social justice, and his goal is to be the catalyst for remarkable social justice. “I am really big on diversity, inclusion and equity,” he explains. “At the time, when I looked at the website, Phoenix College presented just a menial ‘all social justice’ programming. It was very important for me to connect the dots in my career because I don’t believe in just applying for a position for the title. I wanted a position where I had a great interest and great passion, and I could help move the needle.” Being the first African-American president of the college is a major milestone, but Johnson feels a responsibility toward all his students. “Although I am the African-American president, I am not the president just to African-American students,” says Johnson. “I am the president to and for all students and for the community.” As president, he will be seeking opportunities that do not currently exist for students and looking for gaps that need to be closed for minority students. “I made sure to look at my strategic plan for life and every benchmark along the way,” finishes Johnson. “At the heart of this, I want to advocate for the students who have gone through some of the similar traumas as me.”

MOMS HELPING MOMS

Elizabeth Wood and Caitlin Green Cheney are reshaping how women think about early motherhood

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

Being a new mom may look like sunshine and roses, but maternal recovery and health is something that has taken a back seat in our society. Matrescence is an innovative company that focuses on the fourth trimester – the three months following the birth of a child. Behind Matrescence is a time-honored notion that when a new mama is healthy and happy, so is the new baby, and community support is key. Elizabeth Wood and Caitlin Green Cheney are co-founders and educators of Matrescence. When they began attending a mother/baby fitness class, they noticed new moms were stressed out and run-down. “Collectively, we saw moms at fitness class and they looked tired, worn-out, depleted and exhausted,” Wood says. “You accept that for yourself, and you think that’s what happens when you have kids, or at least culturally that’s what we’ve been told.” The passionate duo saw the pattern and lack of support and set out to change that. Matrescence 4th Trimester Planning + Support takes place as a fourpart workshop, meeting every other week where an adaptable and realistic plan for post-birth is laid out. “We tell our moms that they are setting the stage for their daughters and granddaughters and this is will be the new normal in their family and community,” Green Cheney says. “It may not be easy, but it is necessary for the well-being of women to come.” Four focus areas for the program include prolonged period of rest, nourishing foods, warmth and body work. “Pregnant moms are who we work with directly,” Wood explains. “We leave them with homework, so they can have conversations with their husbands or moms, or whoever will be supporting them.” A key component of Matrescence is to have a support system to help in the recovery process. During off-workshop weeks, Matrescence co-founders mentor moms-to-be in their homes or as a play date as they get ready for their babies. “The outpouring of gratitude has been amazing,” Wood says. “Every day I get a mom calling and saying, ‘I am so glad I met you and Caitlin.’ They are saying their lives are forever changed.” For more information, visit www.4thtrimesterplan.com.

SILVER IS GOLD

Nancy Silver’s passion for pets shines through in Two Pups

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Arcadia native Nancy Silver is an engaged business owner as the co-founder of The Paper Place, located in Old Town Scottsdale, which she opened with her mother more than four decades ago. She’s seen a lot of changes since then and has found an additional calling in her devoted passion to animals, one that is due in part to her beloved dogs, Miss Lacie and Mr. P. When Miss Lacie became ill and had to go to the vet, Silver was devastated as she saw fellow pet owners leaving without getting their sick pets treated because they lacked the funds. That sadness evolved into action. In 2017, in honor of her own two fur babies, she founded Two Pups Wellness Fund which provides health care funding for sick rescue and shelter dogs through the Arizona Community Foundation. “I talked about it for a really long time and I knew I had to do something,” Silver explains. “It was a learning experience in the beginning.” It is the overarching goal to get those dogs well, so they can be adopted. Silver initially started by working directly with individual veterinarian offices but found that it was not working. She approached the Arizona Community Foundation and found the perfect ally. Arizona Community Foundation now assists in expert management and Two Pups fund disbursement to nonprofits that need money to treat sick dogs. “They are amazing people and we call them ‘our parents,’” Silver says with a sweet-natured laugh. “It was the most perfect situation for us and they love animals.” In the most recent development, Two Pups has launched the Grown Pups for Grown Ups endeavor. “Grown pups in shelters are always overlooked,” Silver explains. “There is a place for grown pups because you don’t have to train them. All they want is to be loved.” Wellness and DNA tests are run on older dogs and if there is sickness, the dog’s care under a doctor will be paid for 90 days. Again, the goal is to get dogs adopted and into loving homes. “People haven’t really heard much about us yet,” Silver finishes. “Hopefully that’s about to change.” To learn more, visit www.twopups.org. Pulse HIS STYLE

A REAL SUPERHERO Scott Ellsworth combines style and casual comfort in his wardrobe BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

If ever there was a superhero of casual style, it is broker Scott Ellsworth, vice president of SRS Real Estate. As part of the nation’s largest commercial real estate firm dedicated to retail, he is as confident with his fashion as he is in his successful career and philanthropy efforts with Scottsdale Active 20-30 Club. “I’ve never considered myself ahead of the curve on fashion, but I wear what’s in style, very well,” Ellsworth says. He prefers shades of blues and grays while steering clear of bright colors. In cooler months, he embraces suits and ties, and he is a fan of blazers. No matter the time of year, Ellsworth can always count on his “go to” piece in his closet. “You can’t beat a good, untucked button-down,” he says. When he’s not working, you’ll often find him in light gray jeans or black jeans and low high-top shoes by Lacoste are a comfortable favorite, too. “I rock my glasses, generally,” Ellsworth says. “When I got this style of glasses three years ago, as far as perceived identity, there is a Clark Kent and Superman look… I kind of run with it now!”

As the newly elected chairman of the upcoming 20th Annual Broker for Kids (April 5, 2019), what is your goal? We’ll be trying to get some newer teams in to participate that will be fundraising, plus trying to get our existing teams and club members to maximize their fundraising abilities. What can people look forward to at the event? I want to deliver a fun, well-attended event and raise as much money as possible for our 20-plus Arizona-based children’s charity partners that serve children in need. Where are your favorite places to shop? You can’t go wrong with Nordstrom and that’s my top destination. Banana Republic and J.Crew have some good staple items. I’ve even found good fun pairs of socks at a place on Coronado Island [California], so sometimes there are mom and pop places where I’ll occasionally find great accessories.

HER STYLE

MIX AND MATCH MASTER

Defining sophisticated funk, Sherry Engle craves maximalism in a minimalist sort of way

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

With a personal style that is as playful as her portfolio, Sherry Engle is a risk-taking dream maker when it comes to creating a funky, feminine style for herself and her clients. As an interior designer, she adores mixing and matching vintage patterns with modern pieces to create the relaxed-chic looks she’s known for. Drawing inspiration from her travels, Engle is constantly looking for contrasting designs reminiscent of her Mexican and European vacations to incorporate into her personal and professional style. When it comes to staying trendy, she favors Anthropologie for their feminine silhouettes and chunky accessories but finding a small boutique that speaks to her relaxed style is her favorite way to shop. Being in the business of interior design, Engle avoids suits and office attire and turns up the fun factor on her wardrobe by incorporating pops of her preferred colors, red and yellow. “Because of my profession, I don’t have to worry about fitting in with any particular standard of dress,” she says. “Every day is a new day!”

What will we see you in on weekends versus workdays? I love wearing sundresses on the weekends. I can drop what I am doing, grab lunch, run errands or work around the house and still feel cute and comfortable. What would someone say if they looked at your closet? Unpack your suitcase! When I travel weekly or biweekly, it’s very exhausting. So, many times I don’t empty my suitcase for several days or until my next trip. What is your most prized possession in your closet and why? My orange, silk Stella McCartney dress that I bought eight years ago for my wedding. You’re a big fan of jumpsuits. What do you love about them? It’s like wearing sophisticated overalls or a chic onesie – they take all the guess work out of pairing tops and bottoms and lengthen and flatter my figure.

Kristen Keogh talks her love for nature, broadcast journalism and connecting women in the community

Kristen Keogh is a doer. You’ll find her saying yes to just about every opportunity that comes her way, as well as documenting her outdoor adventures for her Here With Her community and connecting with the vast majority of the Valley through her multiple broadcasting positions. From an outsider’s perspective she balances all of this, and more, effortlessly. What’s her secret, you ask? Keep reading...

Uptown August '18

25

MISS SURPRISE About 45 minutes northwest of Phoenix is Keogh's hometown of Surprise, Arizona. The city, now characterized by a growing population and constant development, was still farmland during Keogh's upbringing. With nothing in close proximity to her childhood home – the nearest grocery store was 30 minutes away – Keogh and her four older siblings used their land and imaginations to have fun. “My most vivid memories include my mom packing up a wagon with bats, baseballs and bases then taking us to a clear spot on our property where we could play baseball,” she recalls. “That was the coolest part of having so many siblings – our crew was big enough to form our own little team!” Without really being aware of it then, Keogh formed an appreciation for nature early in life. The same goes for sports, courtesy of her parents. There was never not a local sports game playing on the TV or radio in her household. The entire Keogh gang attended Arizona Coyotes games and had season tickets to the Arizona Diamondbacks when the “old-school colors” were the only colors. Her mom taught her how to be a fan (rule No. 1: always cheer, never boo) and her dad taught her

26

Uptown August '18

the game. Nature and sports were so ingrained in Keogh that careers in both subjects were almost inevitable.

AND...WE’RE LIVE! Admittedly, broadcast journalism was never a profession that crossed this broadcast journalist’s mind. Acting and modeling were fun pursuits for a while, but becoming a politician was the ultimate goal. She was well on her way too, working as Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s press secretary in 2015. Her change of heart occurred when she worked as a receptionist at her family’s business during college and a client who had been a photojournalist for years told her she had what it took. “The conversations we [the client, John Rovell, and I] had truly changed the course of my life,” she reflects. After graduating from Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Keogh moved to Dayton, Ohio, where she assumed a sports anchor and morning reporter position with Sinclair Broadcast Group. Her first on-air report was about Terrell Owens joining the Cincinnati Bengals. “Being on camera felt natural, but my storytelling was not great,” she recalls.

“Once I started connecting to my stories, understanding their impact and delivering them with true concern in my heart, I knew I was doing a good job.” She moved back to Phoenix from Ohio to do some work with Fox 10 before fulfilling a bucket list goal – living in San Diego. She worked for ABC 10 News in Southern California for two years. In 2017, she happily traded in May Gray and June Gloom for Phoenix’s year-round sunshine. “I’m thrilled to be back home in Phoenix,” she says. “This is where my family is, this is where my best opportunities are and this where I feel most like myself.” Keogh is a familiar face to many Phoenicians given all her on-air positions. She is a contributing weather anchor and sports host on 12 News, host of Around AZ on The Social Television Network, an in-game host for the Arizona Coyotes – yes, her parents are stoked about this – and, most recently, the co-host of Driven, a show powered by ClassicCars.com. Howling with fans during Coyotes games, interacting with 12 News viewers on social media, introducing Around AZ viewers to local business owners, and talking shop with gearheads are just a few of the things that Keogh does daily. Not one

day looks like the last, which is something she loves. Above all else, engaging with the various groups that comprise the Arizona community is what makes it worth it. “The best part of having so many opportunities is that each one comes with access to more people in our community,” she explains. “What I do will always be for and about people.”

HEALTH & HERE WITH HER “Once I got older and transitioned to an urban life, I realized my inherent need to be with nature. To this day I prefer being barefoot and I feel most at home when I can feel the earth against my skin,” she admits. For people like Keogh, there is something spiritually revealing about being outside. The absence of distractions, like cell phones and computers, allow outdoor dwellers to connect with themselves fully. In psychology, wilderness therapy is often used to promote self-improvement and healing. Nature has been very healing for Keogh, and she wanted others to experience that healing too. Thus, she founded Here with Her. Here With Her (HWH) is an online community of women that challenge societal expectations through outdoor activities. They motivate each other to hike that mountain or visit that national park as a means to silence judgmental voices with a kinder, more confident voice. For Keogh, that meant hushing comments that discredited her capabilities based on her appearance alone. “I realized when I went into nature that I was completely free from public opinion, as well free from my own harsh criticism of my body,” she explains. “HWH helps women gain that freedom, realize how powerful their bodies truly are and is proof that they aren’t the only ones with struggles.” The health benefits of being outside are plentiful, of course. But health became a serious issue in 2013 when Keogh was diagnosed with an incurable bladder disorder, Interstitial Cystitis (IC). The first two years of living with IC were so unbearable that she fell into a deep depression. Still aching to be outside, but not quite having the energy to get up from the couch, Keogh put a pair of hiking boots by her front door to motivate her. After too many “maybe

tomorrows” and “I’ll go when my body feels up to it,” she decided to just do it. That specific hike on that day was the one that saved her. “My attitude completely changed. I left most of my doctors, ditched the pain pills and started down a path of alternative medicine. I started hiking consistently,” she recalls. “While hiking didn’t heal me physically, it did heal me mentally and I truly believe that mental shift is what helped me get as healthy as I am now.” Keogh will always have IC. However, she has found ways to make living with it not hold her back from experiencing life.

A BALANCING ACT There is such a thing as work-life balance. When she isn’t in front of bright lights and rolling cameras, Keogh finds refuge wandering the planet’s different landscapes

– from hiking a glacier in Iceland to backpacking Havasupai Falls. But don’t let this seemingly effortless balance fool you, because she admits that she couldn’t do everything she does if she didn’t ask for help. Between her family, friends, viewers and the HWH community, Keogh has plenty of people to recruit for help, which she frequently does. “I focus and ask for help a lot. I say all the time that this dream would not be possible without the help of my loved ones. For instance, my sister Jackie helps get my prescriptions when I’m too busy so I can always manage my IC. My boyfriend Neil saves me from myself constantly. Whether I forgot a medication or something insignificant like eyelash glue, he is ready to deliver it to me at work,” she laughs. SUMMER SKIN Treatments to reverse damage from the season

The warm weeks that fall between Memorial Day and Labor Day are full of creating family memories and vacations, but while the sweat, sand, and sunshine is what the season is made of, it does have a major impact on your skin. Here are some ideas for reversing summer damage and repairing your skin, just in time for cooler temperatures.

BY MANDY HOLMES

Slushie Facial Slushie’s aren’t just for sipping. Arizona Facial Plastics gives the frozen treat a whole new meaning with their cooling Slushie Facial. Using freezing techniques to rejuvenate and restore the skin, a small snowball-sized sphere of dry ice is dipped into acetone and works to remove impurities and excess oils reducing inflammation. The result is a cleansing “slush” on the skin’s surface, hence the treatment’s name. $149 at www.arizonafacialplastics.com. Summer Boost Facial Between the dry climate and scorching hot temperatures, the Summer Boost Facial at the award-winning Spa Biltmore within the Arizona Biltmore resort aims to give your skin the end of summer detox it craves. The intense cleansing system, derived from natural oils, moisturizes and prepares the skin to absorb highly active customized serums. Various masks assist in the delivery of nutrients to the cellular structure, balancing and hydrating the skin to combat sun damage. $99 at www.arizonabiltmore.com. IPL Photofacial Say goodbye to the effects of sunburns, blotchy skin and hyperpigmentation with the IPL Photofacial at Advanced Aesthetic Associates. Pulses of light are applied to the skin in a process called photorejuvenation during the 20- to 60-minute procedure, resulting in a smoother radiant complexion. With barely any downtime, the IPL Photofacial is a gentle rejuvenation option that can help improve skin texture and combat the harmful Arizona sunrays. $185 at www.aaaplasticsurgery.com. Absolute Pearl Treatment The Roose Parlour & Spa is a hidden sanctuary in the heart of Phoenix's downtown historical district that provides one of the best sun damage reversal treatments in town. The popular Absolute Pearl Treatment combines Alphahydroxyacids, vitamin C and Actiwhite, creating a uniform, illuminated skin tone appearance and since sunny days are meant to be enjoyed, this anti-aging treatment is perfect for correcting uneven skin tones. $100 at www.theroose.com. Platelet Rich Plasma Treatments Since avoiding sun exposure is difficult, PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatments at Arcadia Wellness Center are a great option to reverse sun damage. The platelets in your blood can be used to treat your skin and reduce the signs of aging by using your own blood to remove a high concentration of platelets that can be injected or microneedled into the skin. Platelets offer healing properties that can increase collagen for more youthful-appearing skin. Starting at $775 at www.arcadiawellnesscenter.com.

closer to home, the company offers kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding on Canyon Lake or rock climbing through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve with half- and full-day options. Beyond that, they take the term “we’ve got your back” very seriously. Guides supply upward of $1,000 worth of outdoor and safety gear required for each trek to ensure each guest is well-equipped for any situation. Though, if you’d like some gear to call your own, Just Roughin’ It’s brick-andmortar store in Scottsdale sells the latest in outdoor essentials for novice and experienced explorers. While on an excursion, adventurers can rest assured that they’re in good hands. Thanks to a high-tech tracking device called Delorme InReach, trekkers can be located on even the most remote trails at any time by the company’s office staff. No matter which adventure you choose, it will be rooted in getting back to nature. You won’t find luxury “glamping” accommodations – in fact, there is no lodging other than you and your guides setting up camp (on overnight trips). Nor will you find help from a pack horse or mule; Just Roughin’ It believes the best way to enjoy a place is from your own hard work to get there, and the reward is certainly worth the effort. For sustenance, though, you won’t be left to forage for your food. Meals are prepared pre-trip in a commercial kitchen or are shelf-stable to ensure they’re safe to eat in the wilderness. Special diets, such as vegetarian and gluten-free, can also be accommodated. Exploration travel certainly fosters personal, and interpersonal, growth. After all, these guided trips don’t just introduce people to new places; they offer full immersion into one’s natural surroundings across a variety of journeys geared toward those who are wild heart. 2018 HYUNDAI KONA

This all-new crossover utility vehicle takes adventure and style to new heights BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $19,000

On looks alone, the all-new Hyundai Kona easily wins the beauty contest. It’s as attractive as any auto in the entire realm of crossover utility vehicles, including the epochal and highly acclaimed Porsche Macan. In the case of Kona, its beauty is more than skin deep. Like other smaller Hyundai SUVs, Kona is named after a vacation spot, the Kona district on Hawaii’s Big Island. According to the Korean automaker, the name is intended to conjure images of the area – such as marine leisure sports and the aroma of Kona coffee. Inside, the subcompact interior – with 94 cubic feet of passenger volume and an additional 19 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seat – Kona feels larger than its segment competitors. I liked the clean, simple design of the interior, one that exudes style and quality, despite ample hard plastic surfaces. Kona occupies the entry-level rung of Hyundai’s crossover vehicle offerings (it’s smaller than the Tucson and Santa Fe) and is offered in four trim levels with a choice of standard frontwheel drive or optional all-wheel drive ($1,300).

All trim levels include a standard rearview camera; hill-start assist control; a tilt-telescopic steering wheel; Bluetooth capabilities; Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; keyless entry; and power windows, door locks and mirrors. Kona buyers also have a choice of two engines: The standard 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder that delivers 147 horsepower and is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, or a sportier 1.6-liter, 175-horsepower turbo four-cylinder. While driving, Kona delivers the best on-road dynamics among all vehicles I’ve tested in its class, thanks to zippy acceleration from my test car’s 1.6-liter engine when entering the highway or passing other vehicles. My time behind the wheel included the Big Island’s smooth roads with twists, rough roads with uneven pavement, and steep mountain roads that climbed to 7,000 feet. Simply put, the driving experience is more than impressive. Overall, the Hyundai Kona is a terrific new crossover with virtually nothing to fault and just about everything to like. And when it comes to overall value, it’s nearly impossible to beat.

Price as tested: $29,775 Engine: 1.6-L turbo four-cylinder Horsepower: 175 Seating: 5 Fuel economy: 26/29 mpg city/ highway Fab features: Upscale exterior and interior styling Athletic driving and handling dynamics Vibrant exterior color options

Provision Coffee Bar recently opened in Arcadia and is bringing a fresh perspective on coffee, cocktails, and food to the neighborhood. Aside from its sips, the eatery is known for its menu of delicious bites, including its fun takes on toasts. The sweet and savory avocado version and the rich yet still light goat cheese variation are both top-sellers but the smoked trout toast ($10) is what caught our attention. A unique take on the classic lox toast, Heft bread (made locally) is layered with cream cheese and smoked trout instead of the traditional salmon. The toast is topped with Maldon salt and, for a Middle Eastern flair, green za’atar, which compliments the velvety cream cheese just right. 4501 N. 32nd St., Phoenix; 602.626.3866; www.provisioncoffee.com.

BEAUTIFUL BOTTLES Turn your bar cart into an art gallery

Have you ever found yourself mesmerized by the unique shapes, sizes and colors of liquor bottles behind the bar? Though what’s on the inside counts the most, a well-designed vessel can leave a lasting impression long after the bottle is empty, and can even be the reason you buy it in the first place. Here are some finds that taste as good as they look.

Ocean Vodka Ocean Vodka is the only vodka in the world distilled from organic sugar cane and blended with deep ocean mineral water. The spirit is crafted in Maui and made with water that originated from a glacier that melted near Greenland more than 2,000 years ago. Once the water is brought to the surface on the Kona coast, it is organically purified and desalinated through a proprietary, natural filtration process. The bottle, which is crystal blue and looks almost like one you would find on an island with a message in it, is a clear homage to the spirit’s namesake: the ocean itself. It retails starting at $39.99 and is currently behind the bar at Base Pizzeria.

Deleón Tequila Known for its abundant character and balance, Deleón Tequila is comprised of agave hand-selected at harvest for high-quality and peak ripeness. Slow roasting of the agave in traditional brick and clay ovens, combined with slow fermentation, enrich the depth and complexity of the agave’s natural sweetness, creating a remarkably nuanced character. It is displayed in a stunning bespoke-style bottle made from fragrance-grade glass and is boldly tattooed with the distinguishing mark of the Deleón brand. Fine-line detailing accentuates the crowning – an ornate metal closure – which was meticulously hand-carved by a jeweler from a one-pound sphere of sterling silver. It retails starting at $32 and is currently behind the bar at Steak 44 and Dominick’s Steakhouse.

Glenmorangie Pride 1981 This is Glenmorangie’s most sublime single malt whisky to date. Characterized by the longest extra-maturation period of any Glenmorangie variation, Pride 1981 is a rare, limited-edition liquor with only 1,000 bottles available. Laurence Brabant, a French designer, teamed up with fine crystal glassware company Baccarat to create a round vessel with glass on the front and back and a circle of wood sandwiched in between. It retails for $3,600 and is currently behind the bar at the Scotch Library at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa.

Hennessy Paradis Impérial Inspired by a blend of rare cognacs ordered by Tsar Alexander I of Russia’s mother as a birthday gift for him in 1818, Hennessy’s master blender Yann Fillioux created Paradis Impérial, which is a

refined and elegant cognac with floral, orange and jasmine notes as well as a subtle smoke and spice. The bottle was designed by Stephanie Balini, an award-winning Baccarat designer. The silhouette of the stunning crystalline glass decanter is the iconic Hennessy shape, with a luxurious crystal cabochon that tops the 18-karat gold and silver collar. It retails for $2,700 and is currently behind the bar at AZ88, W Scottsdale and Mastro’s Steakhouse.

I.W. Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Reviving a classic, I.W. Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is sweeter up front with grain and corn immediately apparent, then moves onto notes of oak, raisin, caramel, spice and vanilla. Aged 15 years, the finish leaves a long and lasting mouthfeel perfect for enjoying as bourbon on the rocks or whiskey neat to truly appreciate the full flavor profile. The bottle is cut glass and a modern take on a classic decanter style. It retails starting at $75 and is currently behind the bar at Pig & Pickle, The Gladly, Donovan’s Steak & Chop House, Fox Cigar Bar and Torch Cigar Bar.

Volcán De Mi Tierra Volcán De Mi Tierra (which translates to “volcano of my land”) pays homage to and is named after a real volcano that sits in the lowlands of Jalisco, Mexico, called Volcán de Tequila. A resemblance of the volcano can be found at the base of the bottle. An expression of that local terrain, this 100 percent blue agave tequila blends herbal, citrus and spice notes indicative of the lowlands with fruit notes of cherry, pear and peach from the highlands. It retails starting at $40 and is currently behind the bar at Casablanca Rooftop Lounge and Sandbar.

Don Julio 1942 Produced in small batches and aged for a minimum of 2 1/2 years, Don Julio 1942 is handcrafted in tribute to the year that Don Julio González began his tequila-making journey. The rich caramel and chocolate nose gives way to a warm oak and vanilla taste with hints of roasted agave. The bottle is reminiscent of an agave leaf and hard to miss. It retails starting at $100 and is currently behind the bar at Blanco Tacos + Tequila, El Hefe and Diego Pops.

Don Julio Real While 1942’s size is striking, it would be remiss not to also note Real, one of the few extra añejo tequilas available on the market today. With a taste that can only be described as exquisite, its rich aromas and incredibly smooth, sophisticated flavor make this tequila truly a one of a kind. The bottle features silver agave fronds on each side and a beautiful silver piña stopper that can’t be found anywhere else. It retails starting at $300 and is currently behind the bar at Sol Mexican Cocina, Barrio Queen and Cien Agaves Tacos & Tequila. Uptown August '18

LONG WALKS ON THE PEACH Savor summer with a sweet yet smoky sipper

When it was time to put together a summer cocktail menu for Pomelo at the Orchard, Lead Bartender TJ Natole immediately thought of the first cocktail he made for the restaurant, Long Walks on the Peach ($9). His unique recipe is inspired by one of his favorite drinks, a whiskey sour. “I’ve done a lot of different summer versions [of a whiskey sour], but was craving something with peach and honey and didn’t want the drink to just be another fruity whiskey sour,” he explains. So, Natole switched things up by adding Johnnie Walker Black Label and Aperol to the libation. “The scotch added the depth and complexity to it, while the Aperol helps temper the sweetness and highlight the smokiness of the scotch without dominating the rest of the ingredients,” Natole says. The result is a beautiful layering of summertime flavors. But, why scotch? “Scotch is a spirit that gets neglected in cocktail programs sometimes, and I wanted a little bit of challenge to play with the traditionally smoky characteristics of the Johnnie Walker Black. From there, it was just feeling what summer flavors I was in the mood for that day,” he says. The flavoring begins with peachy notes, thanks to R&W Orchard Peach liqueur, and gives off honey and citrus undertones from the lemon juice and honey syrup. It finishes with a lingering smoke and acidity thanks to the scotch and Aperol. And though the flavors are complex, the presentation is simple. It’s served in a highball glass on the rocks with a lemon twist. Natole suggests pairing the cocktail with their wings. Pro tip: he gets a half-andhalf order of the Louisiana hot sauce and barbeque sauce wings. Pomelo at the Orchard, 7100 N. 12th St., Phoenix; 602.633.2600; www.pomelophx.com.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Israel Medina of Izzy’s Pantry

Israel Medina is the executive chef of DeSoto Central Market, as well as chef and owner of Izzy’s Pantry, which recently opened at the market.

BY GABBY RICHMAN / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

When did you know you wanted to be a chef? It was 2003, when I moved to Scottsdale and started working at North Italia (Fox Restaurant Concepts) in Kierland Commons. To you, food is… Life! We have to eat to live. I love cooking for my family and seeing their faces when they love what they just ate. When you’re not cooking, where would we find you? Spending time with my beautiful wife and our four children. We have three girls and one boy: Anabella, Taelynn, Cataleya, and Kaisyn. Where did you get your start in the food industry? I got a summer job when I was 15 years old at a small beach grill back home in Lake Tahoe. Do you have a favorite thing to cook? Tacos! In our home, everyone loves tacos. What is your approach in the kitchen? I cook on the line with everyone. We are all equal! Always cook with love. Tell us about Izzy’s Pantry: Izzy’s Pantry is international street style food. I enjoy all kinds of food from different countries so why not have a little something for everyone, from Italian to Mexican to Japanese? We are a scratch kitchen so everything is always fresh. What made you decide to open your own spot at DeSoto? When I took over the BOH [back-of-house] operations at DeSoto, the owner told me that I could do my own concept and name it what I wanted. I’ve always wanted to have my own restaurant. This is only the beginning! Your wife Ashlynn also works at DeSoto as the operations manager. What is it like working with your spouse and how does she inspire your cuisine? I love working with my wife. We help each other out and have each other’s back! She’s my biggest supporter and the smartest person I have ever met. If she doesn’t like something [I cook], she’ll be honest and let me know. Izzy’s Pantry, located at DeSoto Central Market, 915 N. Page Springs Cellars & Bistro A family-owned winery and vineyard tucked into the volcanic landscape overlooking pristine Oak Creek Canyon, Page Springs Cellars produces Rhone-style wines. Where the vineyard sets itself apart, however, is with the on-site bistro led by executive chef Bryan Nowicki. A firstlevel sommelier with decades of experience, Nowicki’s menu, which changes seasonally, is rooted in taking advantage of local ingredients to complement the wines. Don’t miss a few of the chef’s specialties: mason jar rillettes, anything he’s pickled, and handmade spreadable smoked salmon, duck or roasted vegetables, respectively. www.pagespringscellars.com.

Merkin Vineyards Tasting Room & Osteria Like Page Springs, Merkin Osteria is a tasting room with award-winning wine from Merkin Vineyards out of Willcox, Arizona. Also like Page Springs, they’ve completely redefined the Northern Arizona culinary scene with the introduction of this full-service Italian restaurant and tasting room led by executive chef Chris Smith, lauded for leading the kitchens at Robert’s Creekside Cafe & Grill, Sedona Rouge Hotel & Spa, The Asylum Restaurant, and Los Abrigados Resort & Spa before joining Merkin in 2016. Sedona Arizona’s culinary scene is not strictly limited to the Valley. In fact, award-winning and unique restaurants abound in Northern and Southern Arizona. Here are some dining destinations more than worth the drive (and calories), no matter if you go for the day or opt to stay overnight.

Dahl & DiLuca Ristorante Italiano More than 20 years ago, chef and owner Lisa Dahl sought healing after the loss of her son by moving to Sedona. All these years later, Dahl is a James Beard House-featured chef and widely credited for Sedona’s emergence as a national foodie destination. Today, she boasts several fine restaurants in the area, but Dahl & DiLuca was her first. The restaurant’s ample

many of which take influence from the South. Smith’s Southern-fried Arizona hot chicken, shrimp and grits, and pecan-smoked spare ribs are prime examples of the Southwest-meetsSouthern concept. The drink menu is similarly a love of all things local, bursting with Arizonamade spirits, wines, beers and native produce. www.rootpublichouse.com. Josephine’s Modern American Bistro Refined without being pretentious, chef Tony Cosentino uses the seasons – yes, they have them up in Flagstaff – to direct his menu at Josephine’s, taking advantage of the best produce and seafood from across the country month by month and often suggesting wine pairings from the Wine Spectator-awarded wine menu to accompany each dish. Of particular note is his achiote-smoked pork osso bucco, which is slow-braised and served with luscious Tillamook green chili polenta. And try the Southwestern crab cakes at any time – as a Benedict at brunch, in a sandwich or salad at lunch, and even as an entree at dinner, served with a sesame-crusted quinoa masa cake, jicama slaw, spicy remoulade and avocado tomatillo sauce. www.josephinesrestaurant.com.

Tucson menu spans a variety of pastas (don’t miss the lasagna), grilled surf and turf, and classic Italian specialties including chicken piccata and veal marsala. www.dahlanddiluca.com. Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill Perched atop a scenic bluff with panoramic views of Sedona’s majestic red rocks, Mariposa is also a Dahl venue taken in a totally different direction. By using a wood-fired grill and wood-burning oven, Dahl creates handmade delicacies inspired by her travels to Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. The lunch, tapas and dinner options are beyond impressive, but for something truly exceptional, splurge on the “Prix-Fixe Tomahawk for 2” with a wine pairing option, which features four courses showcasing a little bit of everything that makes Dahl’s cooking so special (including a whopping 34-ounce USDA prime rib-eye steak!). www.mariposasedona.com.

Café Poca Cosa Chef and owner Suzana Davila is a proud native of a native of Sonora, Mexico – and incorporates her rich Hispanic culture in every aspect of her restaurant. The authentic menu, which has been lauded by the likes of The New York Times and USA Today, is printed in Spanish on a portable chalkboard that servers take from table to table. And while it changes twice daily, rest assured every item can be paired with the extensive tequila and margarita options. For a variety of flavor, opt for the chef’s plate, which features a selection of items chosen by Davila – and you won’t be disappointed by the surprise. www.cafepocacosatucson.com.

Cress on Oak Creek L’Auberge de Sedona resort is tucked into verdant Oak Creek, making it an altogether otherworldly red rock country experience. Its signature eatery, Cress on Oak Creek, takes full advantage of this sought-after locale as its patio dining sits right along the babbling brook and lush forest landscape, while its interior is modern, sleek and romantic. Open only for dinner, each night executive chef Michael O’Dowd – famous in the Valley for putting Kai at the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass on the culinary map – dreams up a tasting menu available as a three-, four- or six-course dining experience inspired by three natural elements: earth, water and sky. www.lauberge.com.

End NEW IN TOWN

ANGELS IN ARCADIA

One of Phoenix’s popular breweries opens its second location with a twist

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Since 2012, Angels Trumpet Ale House has been a staple of Downtown Phoenix. But, owners Sharry and Mat Englehorn always had bigger plans. As Arcadia-area residents, the couple always knew they eventually wanted to open a location in their own backyard. “We’ve now officially realized our dream,” says Mat, who with Sharry opened Angels Trumpet Arcadia inside the Arcadia Crossing Shopping Center on Thomas and 44th streets this month. “And while still a beer-lovers heaven on earth, the location will also share its brew-infused space with our newest passion project, a craft cocktail lounge named Tall Glass.”

Angels Trumpet Angels Trumpet Arcadia, formerly the 10,000-square-foot Sears Auto Center, has been completely restored and revitalized with a midcentury modern motif, but still has a bit of a garage – albeit stylish – feel. At sunset, guests will be able to catch views of Camelback Mountain thanks to the ample glass doors that adorn the building and inside-outside patio. Altogether, the venue can seat 240 guests and boasts a

fully private 46-person dining room with television and audio capabilities. On the food side, the menu features the same acclaimed menu as the original, both for lunch and dinner (and yes, happy hour, too!) including such favorites as Angels wings ($11.50), served naked with dipping sauced; and The Tractor ($11), a housemade pizza consisting of eggs, bacon, Brussels sprouts and more. But, what about the beer? “Of course, we also offer our signature and ever-changing selection of local and national craft beers on tap, with the day’s offerings written on an oversized slate chalkboard,” Mat explains. The craft beer selection constantly rotates between 31 handless, including current favorites: Ballast Point Fathom IPA ($6), Ace Space Bloody Orange ($7), Maui Bikini Blonde Lager ($6), and Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale ($7).

Tall Glass Tall Glass is a separate craft cocktail lounge with its own entrance and extensive menu of craft cocktails, including spirits from craft beer distilleries such as Rouge Spirits and Cutwater Spirits. “Here, guests will be able to belly up to the 40-seat island-style bar, relax in a cozy booth, or unwind on an outdoor patio featuring a mature paloverde shade tree, all hidden behind a stylish, perforated steel fence,” Mat says. The couple also plans to eventually open a small microbrewery onsite, which Mat describes as, “an intimate brewer’s playground, where we’ll make the sort of beers that we like to drink.” Angels Trumpet Arcadia is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight, while Tall Glass is open daily from the late afternoon (times will vary) to midnight. Opening this month, Angels Trumpet Arcadia, 2339 N. 44th Street, Phoenix; www.angelstrumpetalehouse.com.
