MICHAEL FITZMAURICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board Certified Hand Surgeon
Don’t let trigger finger keep you locked in pain. Painful swelling and inflammation of the tendon in the palm of the hand can now be treated with a quick and easy outpatient procedure. Trigger finger typically results from activities that require prolonged repetitive motion, such as playing an instrument or operating machinery. It may also be caused by underlying health conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes. In addition to pain, trigger finger can cause locking or an inability to fully straighten the finger. The Endotech Endoscopic Trigger Finger Release System was developed by Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice and is available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix. It uses a small incision to allow Dr. Fitzmaurice to see the tendon and repair the damaged tissue.
T
here have been quite a few Phoenicians who have made it big in Hollywood, from Emma Stone and David Spade to Lynda Carter and fun’s Nate Russ. Now, Phoenix is about to add another young starlet to the list: Haley Lu Richardson. We got a chance to speak with Haley Lu about her rising career after her move to Los Angeles (pg. 28). Haley Lu began her life loving the art of dance, competing in local competitions at one of the city’s top performing arts companies, but later realized she was destined to be on the big screen. The future America’s sweetheart decided moving to the City of Angels would be her best bet to become a Hollywood film star and achieve her dreams – and boy was she right. Haley Lu quickly began her steady climb to the top, landing dance roles, which led to connections, which led to acting auditions – and roles, each bigger than the last. If you don’t know her yet, you surely will soon. Best, Gabby Richman Editor-in-Chief gabby@richmanmediagroup.com Find our magazine on Facebook!
This patent pending procedure takes less than ten minutes and is done with local anesthesia only, meaning you can eat the morning of the surgery and won’t even need an IV. The procedure has been so successful in treating trigger finger and restoring pain-free movement that most patients return to normal hand function in as little as one or two days!

Dr. Fitzmaurice has performed thousands of minimally-invasive, endoscopic hand procedures in Arizona over the last decade.
You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb.
Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons. Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!
De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System.

THE GIFT OF SWEET MUSIC Sugahbeat’s tail-wagging video BY MIACHELLE DEPIANO PHOTOS BY MARK MORGAN

continued…
Mark and Katherine Reckling, co-founders of Sugahbeat, are no strangers to the local music industry. Recently, they created a buzz with the release of their first music video for their original song, “I Finally Feel It.” The video, directed by Chadwick Fowler, is not only a new creative endeavor, it’s also a way for the Recklings to give back to the Phoenix community: Twenty percent of the sale’s proceeds are being donated to the Arizona Humane Society.
up close If either Mark or Katherine’s names ring a bell, it’s because the Recklings have a lengthy musical history in the Phoenix community. Mark was in the band Azz Izz, and Katherine was in the band Desert Gumbo. Azz Izz was successful in the southwest region of the U.S., traveling from one event or venue to the next, with corporate sponsorship. Katherine, who also worked for Signature Models and Talent at the time, was putting together models for a marketing campaign for Marlborough Red for Brazil. The campaign wanted models with an edgy look. Katherine knew of Mark, who at the time had long blonde dreadlocks, and she reached out to him to audition for the job. Mark got the role, and a friendship developed out of the job. “After that, we kept crossing paths constantly,” Katherine says. Katherine was making the decision to leave Desert Gumbo when a friend suggested she sing for Azz Izz, so she and current Sugahbeat (www.sugahbeat. com) member Hai Jung Choy joined the band. Katherine and Mark’s crossed paths quickly turned into a relationship and the band enjoyed continued success up until the economy took a turn. Mark and Katherine continued to play as a duet and write music, but took time off from performing to focus on their family once they began raising children. Later down the road, the Recklings began performing once in a while at local establishments, and then became known as Sugahbeat as the performances increased. Sugahbeat, the core of which consists of the Recklings, Choy and Derric Butler, has been playing gigs in Phoenix and beyond, recently performing at Roger Clyne’s Circus Mexicus festival in Rocky Point, Mexico this summer. “Because of the contacts we had from before, it was easy to get into the scene, and it’s nice to be back,” Mark says. Sugahbeat performs every Sunday at O.H.S.O. Eatery and Brewery in Paradise Valley, which played a crucial part in the locally produced video “I Finally Feel It,” with one scene filmed at the restaurant. The duo wrote the song before they had their children, but the inspiration for the
video came to Katherine in a dream about dogs this year. “I literally had a dream about the video, and I told my two best friends, who are both dog advocates, about the dream,” Katherine says. “One of them, Andrea Katsenes, suggested to have the proceeds go to a dog charity.” From there, the idea blossomed and was focused around canines. Although it was a tough task to organize all of the details for the music video, the Recklings happily took on the challenge. The pair sourced their friends and connections in the Valley to acquire an ice cream truck, an animal trainer on set to guide the pooches and ensure animal safety, and secured an official endorsement from the Arizona Humane Society, which they needed in order to donate the proceeds. Then, they got down to the nitty gritty and timing was an issue when filming, which took place over the course of two days. The Recklings wanted to use local

parks without the distractions of children at the parks, and spring break was just around the corner “It was a long first day of shooting,” Mark recalls. Once the second day of shooting was over and the video wrapped, the Recklings launched the final product at the O.H.S.O. Arcadia location, bringing Katherine’s playful vision to life. “Every single aspect of the video was at our fingertips,” Katherine explains. “It was fun.” This is just the beginning for Sugahbeat, with a new release scheduled to come out later this year and more videos anticipated for the future. The Recklings, who have always had a strong belief in giving back to the community, envision that some of the songs from the release will be used to raise money for various Valley charities. “The whole reason we do this is to give back,” Mark explains.

COMMITTED TO COMPASSION
How Bethany Woodard’s past is helping other people’s futures BY KELLY POTTS PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
A
little under two years ago, Bethany Woodard was looking to make a difference for people who aren’t usually seen – the homeless population of the Valley. After experiencing homelessness herself for a period of time during her childhood, Woodard knew she had to bring awareness to the drastic rates of homelessness in Phoenix. That’s when MISSION: Compassion was created. “Everyone is human, we shouldn’t judge their situation, we should come together and help anyway we can,” she explains. MISSION: Compassion (www. mission-compassion.com) creates “giving backpacks” with every day essential items that are passed out to the homeless. As a method to help fund these backpacks, Woodard also sells compassion beads, which are chic beaded bracelets worn as a reminder to practice compassion. MISSION: Compassion is currently partnered with Central Arizona Shelter Services, Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development and long-term transitional housing for previous homeless Phoenix residents. In the future, Woodard’s goal is to branch outside of the homeless community to focus on all forms of compassion toward humanity.

What is your favorite thing about living in Arcadia? It’s a great neighborhood for a family! We love to bike and hike (when the weather allows us!). Really, anything we can do as a family! One of my favorite things about living in AZ is the endless outdoor activities. Ready for the cool weather so we can enjoy again! What is your favorite way to unwind? I love live music. Love to just find a local venue and discover a new local band. Crescent Ballroom is my favorite venue by far! Where are your must-go vacation spots? I love La Jolla, San Francisco, San Diego … really, find me a beach in California and I will be happy! But, La Jolla, is my favorite place to go. UPTOWN |

TRUE COLORS How Marian Zapata-Rossa’s Latina roots drive her success BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
M
arian Zapata-Rossa, who was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and raised in the Midwest, was a college freshman when she got her first taste of racial discrimination. “Some small-minded freshman shouted that I should go back to where I came from,” says Zapata-Rossa, who technically grew up only miles away. “But I knew what he meant.” Undeterred, today Zapata-Rossa is a partner at Quarles & Brady, one of the few Latinas in the U.S. that serves as a partner at a large national law firm. “Embracing diversity is a must in order to succeed in today’s business or civic communities,” she says. Passionate about inclusivity, ZapataRossa served as a long-time member of the executive board of Los Abogados – Arizona’s Hispanic Bar Association – and is a past co-chair of the Minority Bar Convention. In 2012, she was appointed to serve on the Commission on Minorities in the Judiciary. And most recently, she joined the board of Xico, Inc., which is focused on nourishing a greater appreciation of Latino and Indigenous peoples of the Americas through the arts.
Etc.
Your advocacy began even before your law career. How so? Before I entered into law school, I interned for the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs, which led to a nine-month public policy fellowship with the U.S. Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute and eventually work at the National Council of La Raza, the nation’s largest Latino civil rights organization. Can women, Latina or otherwise, really have it all? Yes, but not without support, a strong work ethic and the ability to multi-task. Last year I chaired Los Abogados’ signature fundraising gala, was named partner at my law firm and gave birth to my second child ... all in the same month. UPTOWN |

FOREVER FASHIONISTA Alison Goodman talks her steady style BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

ome children dread picking out their outfits for the school days but Alison Goodman looked forward to the task each night before bed. As she got older, trips to the mall were a favorite weekend pastime, even if she was only window shopping, and now Goodman finds fashion to be an integral part of her daily life. As the marketing director at outdoor shopping destination Scottsdale Quarter, Goodman is surrounded by some of the Valley’s best stores. “I could be starting the day with a fashion segment on one of our local news stations, meeting with event partners or giving a lot of attention to our social media pages,” she says. Goodman describes her style as “classic and chic,” staying true to her favorite designers, colors and silhouettes. “I steer clear of super trendy styles and stick to what I love best, styles that I know will work for me. And you can never own too much black,” she explains. For her work wardrobe, Goodman typically wears dresses and skirts in solid colors, but on the weekends she brings out her lululemon gear, denim collection and her favorite small crossbody bag. When she’s not working, you can find Goodman binge-watching the Netflix series of-the-moment, spending time with family, attending a Pilates class or grabbing brunch.
What are some of your favorite brands? There are a lot, but Marissa Webb, Diane Von Furstenberg and Chanel are my favorites. Come fashion week in the spring and fall, I live on Vogue online to see the latest shows as they happen. Are you a shoes, purse or jewelry person? Shoes! My favorite brands include Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo, and I’ve worn out many pairs of Tory Burch Reva flats. Which fall item are you looking forward to wearing most? ith his trademark glasses and stylish wardrobe, Steve Schnall is a familiar face in the halls of Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH). He cuts a sophisticated figure in his classic button down men’s shirt and Ferragamo shoes, but what he really wears well is his passion for his work. As Chief Development Officer of Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation, Schnall leads community outreach and is in charge of building connections with philanthropic leaders across the Valley. “My job truly is amazing because I have the opportunity to meet so many people in our community who are proud and excited to support the children’s hospital. It’s such an inspiration to meet with business leaders from small shops to major corporations, and hear their stories. Taking the time to understand what drives their charitable giving efforts is what inspires me,” he explains. While Schnall readily admits that he never wears a tie to meetings, he does have two accessories that he feels are a business necessity. “Great shoes and belts may not make the man but they can tell you a lot about a person,” Schnall says. One thing that can be said about Schnall’s style is that he carries a sense of pride for his work at PCH. One that is timelessly fashionable.

Haley Lu Richardson is Hollywood’s next big star BY STEPHANIE LOUGH
any dream of a career in the limelight, relentlessly chasing stardom eager to become a member of the highly exclusive club of Hollywood elites. Phoenix certainly has no shortage of talented hopefuls, but only a special few make it to the level of box office darling Emily Stone or television icon Linda Carter. For 21-year-old Haley Lu Richardson, that dream is quickly becoming a reality. Fresh off her latest series on Freeform (formally known as ABC Family), the acclaimed dancer-turned-actress is looking forward to two major feature film releases alongside some of the most recognizable names in the biz. And while Richardson is rapidly ascending the industry’s ladder, the Phoenix native is closely connected to her Arizona roots, humbled by the support of her family and friends, and still finds crafty
ways to unwind from the Hollywood hustle. Born to creative parents, graphic designer Valerie and golf course architect Forrest, Richardson was encouraged to explore expressive outlets and cultivate her own passions. “Both my mom and my dad are such strong and creative individuals … they set an example for me that I can do and be anything, even if it's a bit unconventional,” says Richardson. “They are so involved and so caring while also allowing me the space and chance to make my own decisions and be my own person.” From a young age, Richardson ran the gamut on trying every extracurricular available, from soccer to gymnastics, musical theater and more. But during her exploration, one principle stuck with her the most: dancing. “It just clicked that that’s what I wanted to be doing,” says Richardson, UPTOWN |

noting that while she took a few classes at the pre-school level, she fully committed to the sport at age nine. “So that’s when I officially started – and I never stopped.” She joined the Cannedy Performing Arts Centre, home to one of the most competitive dance companies in the state. It was there she found the spotlight she needed to shine as she quickly rose to the top of her class – and national competitions. Before she was old enough to drive, Richardson won multiple titles, including “National Dancer of the Year" at Hollywood Vibe and “People’s Choice Award” at the Herberger Theater’s Arizona Young Artists’ Competition. With the taste of a national audience, combined with her outgoing charisma, innate talent and magnetic beauty, Richardson set her eyes on a larger stage as she naturally transitioned to acting.

“As a dancer I learned the importance of emoting and telling a complete story, not just using my body, but also with my face and my soul. With acting that is all you do. You have to be as vulnerable and willing as possible,” she says. Armed with determination and unbridled enthusiasm, Richardson left Arcadia High School at age 16 to move to Los Angeles and fully immerse herself in the industry – the most cutthroat and competitive audience she had yet. “All I knew was this whole ‘acting thing,’ whatever it was, I wanted to do it and I was going to do it,” she says, adding her doubts were overshadowed by her intensity to succeed. “And that was that. There wasn't a plan B.” Although she didn’t have “plan B,” she utilized her dancing skills to secure auditions and make connections. “I had all these dreams and ambitions, but no one knew who I was or cared to see me for any roles. To keep busy and gain some experience I started going out on dance auditions.”
She took the values she learned from dance and applied them to her acting approach. With each audition and new experience, good or bad, she continued to learn and grow. “Being put in a place where you are literally judged, I learned to get thick skin right off the bat,” Richardson says of the skills competitive dancing taught her. “I am a very sensitive person, but having those dance competitions under my belt almost made me numb to the idea of (criticism).” But for Richardson, she wasn’t subject to much criticism or rejection, at least by Hollywood standards. After only a year and a half of living in Los Angeles she was cast in her first national television role on the series Ravenswood for ABC Family (now Freeform). “I full on freaked out when I heard that I got the part. I grew up watching (ABC Family) so it really felt like a dream. It was the most wonderful start I could have asked for,” she reflects. Ravenswood ended in 2014 after UPTOWN |

only one season, but the relationships she built with Freeform landed her on another series, Recovery Road, which aired on the network earlier this year. Her next big break was one often considered a rite of passage for professional actors – a milestone indicator of a career going well: Guest starring on the massively popular and long running TV show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU). “I called my agent and said ‘I don't care about anything else, all I want is an audition for SVU!’,” laughs Richardson, who admittedly binge-watches the series. “I just wanted it so bad and working with Mariska!” (Referring to Emmy-award winning Mariska Hargitay, who plays SVU’s heroine Lieutenant Olivia Benson in the show’s 18 seasons.) Her episode Decaying Morality aired in 2015, and in the same year Richardson accomplished another career landmark with her supporting role in The Bronze, an off-beat indie comedy in which she plays an Olympic gymnast hopeful trained by a washed-up and delusional

former champion. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, an unforgettable event for Richardson as a first-time attendee. “It is such a renown and respected festival, more than anything it was just jaw dropping to be there,” says Richardson. “I wish I had gotten to soak it in more … it was so overwhelming that it was almost a blur. I want to go back one year when I am not in a film and just experience the festival as a fan!” (Not so) unfortunately for Richardson, it may be some time before she can sit back and watch from a fan’s perspective as her career continues to snowball in the best ways possible. Her next film, The Edge of Seventeen staring Hollywood heavyweights Woody Harrelson and Hailee Steinfeld, hits theaters this November. In the coming of age dramedy, Richardson plays best friend to Steinfeld’s lead, whose relationship is strained as the perils of high school and teenage angst pulls them in different directions. “Hailee and I had a lot of fun together,” says Richardson. “I think the movie will be relatable to most people no matter what your gender or age. “ Also on the horizon is M. Night Shyamalan’s highly anticipated psychological horror, Split. Working with the Oscar Award-winning director was a new experience for Richardson, as she previously only worked with first-time directors. “Night is so seasoned and confident in what he does that it was a completely different experience working with him,” she explains. “He is very clear with what he wants and it was my job as an actor to bring that exact specific thing with still being true to my instincts.” It’s evident that Tinsel Town has received Richardson with open arms, but for Richardson, Phoenix will forever be home. She visits as often as possible to spend time with her family, and especially enjoys hiking, swimming and frequenting Flower Child restaurant. “I love Phoenix, and Arizona in general,” she says of growing up with a love for nature and mountains. “After a few years living in LA, I’ve found that I am definitely not a city girl! I love an environment where it's easy to relax and I think I took that for granted in Arizona.” Another perhaps more surprising
way Richardson finds peace is through crocheting. She even has her own Etsy account, Hooked By Haley Lu where she sells her hand-crocheted tops, hats and scarves. “My mom taught me (to crochet) when I was eight and ever since then it has been a form of therapy for me and this extra creative outlet where I don't have to put so much pressure on myself. It's something I do 100 percent for fun. “ Even with her rapidly diminishing free time, Richardson still values the lifelong SEPTEMBER 2016 |

friendships she made growing up, though she admits it’s increasingly difficult to maintain relationships as they too are embarking on their adult lives and heading in different directions. “It's really just learning how to keep in touch in this new exciting chapter.” One thing that is for certain, whatever Richardson’s next chapter is, Phoenix audiences will be watching their newest hometown honey. ARTFUL MUSINGS FIVE LOCAL ARTISTS BLENDING THE CREATIVE CULTURES OF PHOENIX AND SCOTTSDALE
T
he Valley’s art scene has long been viewed as two separate cultures: Scottsdale with its traditional Western art, conjuring images of cowboys and turquoise associated with the Southwest, versus Phoenix’s contemporary, urban aesthetic focused in the downtown districts. Both are respected in their own right, with Scottsdale’s longrunning Thursday ArtWalk and Phoenix’s popular First Fridays, and both have an important place in the Valley’s arts culture. But recently, the communities have started to overlap, with a growing sophistication in Phoenix and cultural expansion to Uptown, and a more relaxed and abstract influence percolating to Scottsdale. John Gleason
We spoke with five local artists who are embracing the everdeveloping art scene. They shared how the Valley inspires them and what they envision regarding the future of the area’s culture. Self-taught sculptor John Gleason’s career has spanned more than 20 years, giving him firsthand insight to how the Valley’s art scene has grown over time. “Arizona, like the rest of the U. S., is seeing great changes in the art world right now, from where and how we see art to how and where we buy it,” Gleason says. “Phoenix and Scottsdale have a thriving art community, and I see a growth of the arts throughout the Valley every year.” As co-founder of Quan’tum Art, Inc., a contemporary art gallery in the heart of the Scottsdale Art District, Gleason has seen the shift away from Scottsdale’s more traditional Western art to include more diverse and contemporary imagery. “In Arizona, collectors of Western art are changing. The population of the Valley is more national and international, and we are losing the Western art galleries,” Gleason says. “Younger generations are seeking more diverse and sophisticated imagery that speaks to a renewed interest in art and sculptures.” It is this sophisticated, contemporary aesthetic that is reflective in Gleason’s work. Primarily a manipulator of copper, his pieces incorporate other contrasting materials including glass, clay, wood and stone. UPTOWN |

“I love the versatility which can be changed through the processes of heat, patina and acid,” says Gleason, who has created both two- and three-dimensional pieces. “My copper and glass wall sculptures have been collected by art lovers, municipalities, and are in private and corporate collections.” And while he sees Western art fading in the traditional sense, he is still heavily influenced by the natural beauty of the Southwest, particularly inspired by the colorful geology and landscapes in the Four Corners region. “I have spent much time creating sculptures in and around the El Morro National Monument in Ramah, New Mexico,” says Gleason, adding that some of his personal favorite installations can be found at the national park as well as nearby it. “I find the area inspiring, both creatively and spiritually.” | SEPTEMBER 2016
Frank Ybarra
Gleason is also adamant that he doesn’t take his work too seriously and recognizes art is a luxury meant for enjoyment. The sentiment conveyed by his work resonates with the attitude of the emerging local art community: “Happy. Hopefully though provoking. Contemporary.” But what Gleason does take seriously is the role art plays in our culture and the legacy it leaves for posterity. “Over time, history has shown us that in the end, all we leave behind is art and architecture. Artists document our existence.” Even with the shift away from more traditional Western imagery, the influence the genre has on local artists is a lasting one. Such is the case for neo-Cubist illustrator Frank Ybarra, whose iconic images of the Southwest have made him one of the Valley’s most sought-after artists. The Phoenix native frequently pulls imagery from the desert’s physical landmarks and depicts colorful scenes of American family life with Southwest influences. As a Mexican-American, his cultural heritage is apparent in his subject matter, while the familiar images invoke a pop-art quality that differentiates his work from his Western artist predecessors. “I find inspiration from the images in our desert environment and my Mexican culture and family memories,” Ybarra says, adding that one of his favorite pieces is a tribute to his father called Fanfare for the Common Trabajador. Because of his embodiment of Southwestern roots, five of Ybarra’s images were selected to appear on the Arizona Centennial advertising campaign in 2012 and used on banners, SEPTEMBER 2016 |

billboards, print ads and more. His work was also nominated for the Governor’s Art Award this year. Active in Xico Inc., an arts organization that features Mexican and Native American artists, Ybarra believes it is crucial for the Valley to support artists who represent the foundations of our culture saying, “We grew up here and have experienced our desert environment as well as the fact that Phoenix has grown tremendously in recent decades.” Art enthusiasts can view Ybarra’s current exhibit at Casa de Artistas in Old Town Scottsdale, which is part of Thursday ArtWalk events, however, Ybarra notes that the Valley’s artistic growth is most apparent in the downtown district. “It’s great to see the activity on First Fridays in Downtown Phoenix. Lots of new galleries and art spaces are popping up there. With the general interest in the events that are happening downtown, I feel that it can only get better.” For some creative types, the Valley is a source of inspiration that’s actively sought out, rather than ingrained in their upbringing. For mixed-media sculptor and installation artist Christine Cassano, the appeal of our desert’s unique and “harsh beauty” brought her to the Valley from the east coast a decade ago. “Living in the desert, I’m constantly reminded of nature’s ability to adapt and our desert environment,” Cassano says. “The landscape, plants and animals are the most stunning examples of that. They all have this harsh beauty reflected in their patterns, textures and armors, each offering deep secrets of pure adaptation and survival. It is that harsh beauty that very much influences aspects within my work.” Cassano’s general style is a hybrid of industrial and organic elements, resulting in art that some may consider, “like the desert itself, both harsh and beautiful.” She works with a multitude of contrasting materials, including clay, wood, stone, plastic, concrete, circuitry, metal and found objects to create her large-scale installations, assemblage pieces and sculptures. A perfect example of her contrasting vision is Jawbreaker, a mixed-media sculpture composed of horse jaw bone, cast metal, concrete and moss, which was recently awarded first place in Scottsdale’s Tilt Gallery’s “Infinite Possibility: Art of Tomorrow” international juried exhibition. From her shared warehouse studio, Cassano is able to connect with like-minded individuals and keep a finger on the pulse of the local art scene. She cites the economic downturn as changing the gallery business model and the way we consume art, with many artists transforming their once traditional exhibition galleries to multi-use, shared art spaces to cover overhead. “It’s on the shoulders of emerging and established artists to continue to be resourceful, find places to exhibit their work, and stay on top of exhibit and marketing opportunities.” Much like becoming an artist isn’t neccessarily a straigtforward path, the journey into art itself isn’t as straightforward for some. As is the case for Kevin Coran, an “accidental artist” who developed his passion by building decorative fountains from scraps leftover from house projects – and then gaining the attention of friends. After half a decade of truck driving during the day and creating at night, he became a full-time artist 10 years ago. “My work could be called abstract expressionism, but I usually just call it contemporary abstract,” says Coran, adding that SEPTEMBER 2016 |

he’s not particularly fond of labels, as neither description communicates the whimsical illusions and balance his pieces create. His visions are heavily influenced from his experience working on cars and driving trucks, and he continues to repurpose mechanical parts to give his work an “post-industrial” feel. Also an avid science fiction reader, he is driven by imagination and his own curiosity. “I often want to dig in and see how something works, how I can build it, what makes it look and feel right and, ultimately, how to give it life,” Coran says. “Creating art is not an intellectual pursuit for me but one of communicating in ways that words cannot.” Coran’s creations are highly sought after all over the country, with one of this favorite pieces, Knot Me, recently being sold to a company Washington D.C. The sculpture captured the imaginations of many, including the City of Surprise, which recently commissioned a larger version. Other pieces can be seen around the state, including Pearson & Company in the Scottsdale Art District and galleries in Chandler, Avondale and Prescott. In addition to his own artistic endeavors, Coran is passionate about supporting other local artist and strengthening the Valley’s art community though his involvement in the Arizona Artists Guild, Phoenix Art Museum’s Contemporary Forum, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and 5 Arts Circle. As a way to give back, he also holds events for mid-career artists, groups from Mesa Community College’s Sculptural Welding classes and for 3-D printing. “Artists are the most vibrant part of any community. They generally know no bounds and are able to see the ‘same old things’ in brand-new ways.” As for the growth of the Valley’s art scene, Coran says it’s been fun to experience firsthand. “The local art scene is absolutely amazing. Downtown Phoenix was not even on the art radar 10-plus years ago, and now it may well be the center of the Valley’s art culture,” Coran says. “As it’s grown, the art being exhibited has gotten more SEPTEMBER 2016 |
sophisticated and professional. Almost every city in the Valley now has a public art program – people everywhere recognize the value and importance of art to our quality of life.” Another fan of Downtown Phoenix’s artistic growth is graphic designer-turned-artist, Sara Becker, who began painting 15 years ago. A self-described “expressive colorist” she creates her artistic vision by layering paints, sanding and reapplying the paint for deep texture and luminous colors. Inspired by the natural palette and textures of the Valley’s mountain preserves, her work is reminiscent of the Southwest’s sunsets juxtaposed with minimalist symbols and modern text. “I find inspiration in the act of artistic creation itself, in the serenity of yoga and in certain words and symbols that act as a portal to those places for me,” Becker says. “Sometimes the paint itself takes me where I want to go.” As a yoga enthusiast, the practice is commonplace both in Becker’s work and life, with pieces currently on display at Modern Yoga in Scottsdale. No longer limited to traditional galleries or art shows, more and more artists are connecting with like-minded businesses to showcase their work, or turning to more collaborative, shared spaces. “The arts always have the potential to reflect the local culture. It’s important that Phoenix sees itself through the eyes of many different artists. Amazingly, no two are ever the same.” An avid supporter of Scottsdale’s ArtWalk and Phoenix’s Frist Fridays — where she has upcoming shows at First Studio and Olney Gallery on Roosevelt – Becker sees the most growth in artists’ willingness to share their creativity and opening their studios to broader audiences. “I love that artists here are so supportive of each other and there is a diversity of visual expression. The art scene is always changing, as new artists, styles and imagery are put out there, and their influences ripple through our community.”

The embryo-monitoring imaging algorithm provides more information to couples and their fertility team about the growth potential and pregnancy success prognosis of their embryos. Accompanying advanced technology is the harmonious marriage of compassion and expertise that Dr. Behera and her team exude. This is otherwise known as the 4 Es: Expertise, Experience, Ethics and Empathy. “At Bloom, we have compiled a team of experts in the field of fertility, each providing the latest and best therapies available to our patients,” she says. “Throughout the treatment process, our patients are met with our genuinely caring and highly-skilled

Specialists in Healthy, Beautiful Skin
Anne Walter, MD, of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists DR. ANNE WALTER wanted to be a physician ever since she was a little girl, and when she discovered dermatology, she knew she had found her calling. “Dermatology offers a great balance of surgery, cosmetics and general medical issues and provides an opportunity to build longstanding relationships with patients and their families.” Dr. Anne Walter is the founder of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists, which offers expert medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatological care in a comfortable, boutique practice. “We provide services for every skin care need – childhood birthmarks and rashes, acne, psoriasis, allergic reactions, skin cancer screenings, skin cancer surgery, Botox, fillers, laser treatments and everything in between.” Dr. Walter focuses on educating her patients to encourage healthier skin. Living in Arizona, a state with plenty of outdoor activities and abundant sunshine, forces us to be aware of the damaging effects of the sun. “I think sun protective clothing is the wave of the future. It allows you to take advantage of the outdoors while effortlessly preventing sun damage.” This doctor practices what she preaches! When she isn’t discussing skin protection with her patients, you’ll find her shielding her alabaster skin with a large floppy hat, long sleeves and her favorite sunblock. After all, as Dr. Walter says, you can’t start protecting yourself too early! Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. “As a fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon, I do my best to turn a stressful diagnosis like skin cancer into a positive experience for my patients,” Dr. Walter says. Dr. Walter also provides aesthetic services which can help correct sun damage. “I love keeping up with the latest treatments
and technology to help my patients look and feel their best.” Dr. Walter is originally from Northern California. She attended Harvard University for her undergraduate degree, attended the University of Southern California for medical school, completed her internship at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, and trained at Northwestern University for residency. She also completed a fellowship in procedural dermatology, specializing in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and cosmetic dermatology. After spending years in cold weather climates, Dr. Walter and her husband decided to trade in their snow shovels for flip-flops to be closer to their family. “My husband and I joke that Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists started as our honeymoon! We opened the practice in April 2015, a week after our wedding, and have been enjoying it since.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DERMATOLOGY & SKIN SURGERY SPECIALISTS, CALL 480.418.1087 OR VISIT WWW.SKINSPECIALISTSOFAZ.COM.

A Phone Call Away
Sumer L. Daiza, MD, FACS, of Plastic Surgery Center of Scottsdale
AN AVERAGE DOCTOR won’t give patients a personal cell phone number as a means of direct communication; patient inquiries and concerns are likely to be addressed during a practice’s office hours. But, Dr. Sumer Daiza isn’t your average doctor – her hours are her patients’ hours. “Every patient gets my cell phone number. I want my patients to be comforted knowing that I am accessible to them any hour,” Dr. Daiza says. Not only does she bend the rulebook on traditional doctor/ patient communication, her practice also breaks the “factorylike” norm. “My practice, Plastic Surgery Center of Scottsdale, has a very concierge-meets-boutique style. The atmosphere is not only inviting, but it also allows me to be very hands on and give my patients all the attention they need.” And attention is what they get! From the consultation and preoperative visit to the recovery time, Dr. Daiza is present every step of the way before, during and after all her patients’ surgeries. “When patients put their complete trust in me to perform a life-changing procedure, it is my absolute responsibility and honor to give them 100 percent of what I have to offer.” Dr. Daiza completed her rigorous studies more than a decade ago and is the only double board certified female plastic surgeon in the Valley with cosmetic fellowship training. She offers Valley patients all of her expertise in cosmetic surgery of the breast, body and face. Body contouring is a true art form that Dr. Daiza has perfected. Her specialty lies in breast and body work – especially mommy makeovers – but she performs all aspects of cosmetic surgery, including skin lesion removal, scar revision and ear
lobe repair. She has also curated a craft in facial injectables like Botox, Dysport, Juvederm and Restylane. “I personally do all injectables myself in order to maintain the ever-present relationship with patients, as opposed to ancillary staff completing the task.” Dr. Daiza’s ultimate goal is to help Valley men and women experience an all-encompassing transformation that will impact their lives forever. It is more than just a physical transformation; it is an emotional and mental transformation as well. “What I do is very personal. Patients come to me to make changes that will forever transform their lives. We come to share a bond, and I treat that bond no differently than family.” Whether you have questions regarding body contouring or need a compassionate shoulder to lean on pre-procedure, Dr. Daiza is always just a phone call away. Progressive Provider
Ray Rhodes, MD, bio-identical hormone replacement specialist of SottoPelle®
AFTER 25 YEARS in the medical world, Dr. Ray Rhodes decided it was time to hang up his medical coat and embrace retirement. Retirement, though, was fleeting as he unexpectedly stumbled onto a second career. Dr. Rhodes reached for his white coat – this time wearing it as a certified specialist in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) at SottoPelle®. SottoPelle® Therapy is a highly effective form of hormone replacement that prescribes biologically identical hormones through the body’s bloodstream using a pellet delivery system. These pellets actually mimic the body’s physiological needs, which is as natural as you can get in medical treatments. This treatment was developed and refined by the late Dr. Gino Tutera, a dear friend of Dr. Rhodes and the individual responsible for his switch in medical specialties. Dr. Rhodes was first a patient of Dr. Tutera’s before he became a provider at the SottoPelle® offices in the Phoenix area. He has been a provider in the Valley for seven years now. “I was so fascinated by my results and the physiology of the hormones that I dove right in and started working with Dr. Tutera, the guru behind it all,” he says. “I saw this as an opportunity for a different medical experience and to help people better enjoy their lives.” Dr. Rhodes can speak first-handedly about BHRT having experienced it himself. “After getting the bio-identical testosterone replacement I had much more ambition, energy and mental clarity,” he says. His own patient experience differentiates himself from other providers. Dr. Rhodes offers patients sincere feedback and assures them that if BHRT worked for him, it will and does work for anybody.
“Bio-identical hormone therapy is positively life-changing, relationship-saving and, in some cases, life-saving. The key word is bio-identical,” he explains. And the proof is in the pudding. Patients of Dr. Rhodes speak volumes about how wonderful and rejuvenated they feel after receiving a type of therapy that is consistent with science and physiology. “There is nothing more rewarding to me than seeing the faces of my patients light up with joy and enthusiasm over how good they feel and how drastic their lives have changed for the better from this unique treatment.” SottoPelle® Therapy so profoundly changed the quality of life for Dr. Rhodes that he left retirement behind in order to provide patients with the same life-changing promise. And as a man of integrity, Dr. Rhodes doesn’t break his patient promises. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SOTTOPELLE®, CALL 480.874.1515 OR VISIT WWW.SOTTOPELLETHERAPY.COM.

A True Silhouette
Jeffery Ptak, MD, FACS, of Silhouette Surgical Spa
WOULDN’T IT BE exceptional if your external appearance matched your inward, youthful spirit? Dr. Jeffery Ptak of Silhouette Surgical Spa does more than enhance one’s appearance; he reveals the ageless beauty that dwells within each of his patients, giving them their true silhouette back. Dr. Ptak is a leading Scottsdale plastic and reconstructive surgeon with 29 years of experience. In nearly three decades, he has improved the quality of people’s lives by rebuilding injured or deformed areas of their bodies and faces. “The ability to repair a congenital deformity with almost instant renewal of the patient’s self-image is very gratifying,” Dr. Ptak says. As a native Phoenician, it was only fitting that Dr. Ptak open his practice in Arizona. Silhouette Surgical Spa offers patients medical innovation – a surgery center and inclusive medical spa all in one facility. In the era of regenerative medicine, Dr. Ptak applies the tools of reconstructive experience, technology and science to restore one’s appearance. The list of services he offers is extensive, from facial rejuvenation like facelifts, rhinoplasty, and laser resurfacing to breast and body sculpting procedures. What’s more endless is the restored confidence of his patients. His patients’ exceeded expectations keep them returning to Dr. Ptak, and their recommendations reach every family member. “I have operated on three generations of the same family,” he says. “It is the confidence that my lifelong patients have shown in me that is most humbling and energizes me to continue to achieve my highest level of performance in my craft for my patients.” Central to his practice philosophy is encouraging patients to maintain a commitment to a youthful, healthy and, above all, natural appearance. Rather than diving into plastic surgery and receiving a one-shot makeover, which is neither safe nor necessary, Dr. Ptak suggests that his patients take baby steps into plastic surgery.
“Investing in your outward appearance a little at a time has been clearly shown to psychologically improve one’s body image, self-image and, ultimately, self-esteem,” Dr. Ptak explains. While navigating patients through informed decisionmaking about plastic surgery, Dr. Ptak also spends a substantial amount of time focusing on each patient’s inner spirit. “I truly enjoy learning every patient’s story and getting to understand the motivation behind their desire for improving themselves,” Dr. Ptak says. It is this doctor-patient relationship that often fades from American medicine, yet Dr. Ptak doesn’t let it disappear at his office. He determines the very best approach for each patient so that he can apply his full range of experience to achieve the desired goals. As for Dr. Ptak’s goals? His priority is to help increase his patients’ self-esteem so that their internal sense of self is visible to the rest of the world. Humanitarian Heart Shepherd G. Pryor, MD, FACS, of Valley Facial Plastic Surgery
DR. SHEPHERD G. PRYOR’S medical studies have taken him all over the world. He has traveled extensively through the U.S. and has passport stamps from Asia to Europe to Rio de Janeiro. With a decade of education from prestigious universities and residencies from elite medical centers under his belt, Dr. Pryor brings his worldly expertise to the Valley. “There is no greater state to live than Arizona. I love the people and clientele in Scottsdale,” he says. “Plus, almost yearround sunshine cannot be beat!” Dr. Pryor began his career as a reconstructive facial plastic surgeon helping correct major facial defects. This naturally lead to a cosmetic fellowship where he honed in his skills and created an artistic practice based in Scottsdale. Valley Facial Plastic Surgery is where Dr. Pryor currently helps patients look and feel their absolute best – both inside and out. Patients visit Dr. Pryor for surgical procedures like rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty and minimally invasive face-lifting. The healing time for said surgeries can leave patient’s swollen and bruised for weeks. But courtesy of the latest and most advanced wound-healing techniques offered at his practice, Dr. Pryor ensures a recovery time much shorter than other surgeons. “Patients love the wound-healing techniques and options available on selective cases. It enables them to return to everyday life much quicker,” he says. His craftsmanlike touch not only works miracles on Valley patients, but it also outreaches to the greater Phoenix community, as well as communities overseas. Dr. Pryor devotes his time and energy freely on a case by case basis to help patients with facial deformities, facial paralysis and also victims of domestic violence who have limited access to clinical care and coverage. Rather than conceal himself behind a marble-floored office or be placed upon a pedestal, this doctor makes himself readily
available to the many faces of mankind. “I have not secluded myself from the world of health insurance,” he says. “I help everyone.” His humanitarian actions speak louder than words, but Dr. Pryor’s words also speak volumes of his kind heart. Patients who visit him will always receive genuine dialogue. “I give no double talk. I am very conservative as I’m always providing realistic expectations and natural results for my patients,” he explains. There is no achievable “Dr. Pryor look” after visiting this worldly doc. Rather, he embraces and enhances the already unique features of each unique individual he treats. The masterpiece starts with his patients, and ends with the overwhelming gratitude he receives. “The smiles and hugs are what matter the most. There isn’t anything better than a genuine ‘thank you’ from a patient,” he says. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT VALLEY FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY, CALL 480.273.8688 OR VISIT WWW.VALLEYFACIALPLASTICSURGERY.COM.
DOCTORS of the DESERT
In Good Hands Michael J. Fitzmaurice, MD, of Fitzmaurice Hand Institute
EACH HAND HOUSES 27 bones along with numerous muscles, nerves, vessels and tendons. While it may be compact in size, the anatomy of the human hand is anything but simple. Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice’s concentration is on this small, yet complex, part of the body. During his residency in general surgery, Dr. Fitzmaurice became interested in reconstructive and vascular surgery. These two specialties, among many others, are involved in the specialty of hand surgery itself. After completing his studies in Louisville, Kentucky, Dr. Fitzmaurice moved to the desert to jumpstart his hand surgery career. Fitzmaurice Hand Institute opened in the Valley in 2012. For four years, Dr. Fitzmaurice has been providing patients with the very best and most advanced care that hand surgery has to offer. He has become a name that people trust and a leader in the field. Dr. Fitzmaurice’s practice is just as much clinical as it is educational. Ongoing research and development is conducted daily in order to discover new and improved ways to help patients feel better faster. “We are always reevaluating procedures and outcomes to deliver the most effective care possible,” Dr. Fitzmaurice says. His backgrounds in mechanical engineering and medicine make Dr. Fitzmaurice a true medical pioneer. He uses a number of new techniques and procedures that are only available at his practice. “I utilized every minimally invasive surgery technique during the early part of my career and realized the loss with some of these,” Dr. Fitzmaurice says. “This is why we developed the EndoTech surgical instrumentation system – to provide a safer and more effective alternative.” Patients with common conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, tendinitis and arthritis are guaranteed optimal results with rapid return to life, work and activity because of Dr. Fitzmaurice’s minimally invasive developments like the EndoTech instrumentation. “This instrumentation is unlike any other endoscopic procedure because it allows a complete visualization of all structures involved like critical nerve and tendons. Other techniques that have been available led to injuries to these structures due to incomplete visualization,” he explains.
Along with minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Fitzmaurice utilizes regenerative medicine and anti-aging techniques in his practice. Stem cell treatment and platelet rich plasma, for example, are just a few non-operative treatment options available. “We have also developed a stem cell reconstructive technique for thumb arthritis called Arthro-Rejuvenation, which improves recovery significantly.” Dr. Fitzmaurice’s innovative developments are moving outside of his practice – literally. He is in the process of developing a center of excellence, an extension of his practice that will offer patients same-day services including urgent care evaluation, clinical evaluation and surgical intervention. “We specialize in local-only anesthetics, which provides patients with a small numbing medicine that makes same-day surgery possible,” he says. “This minimizes time away from home and significantly decreases costs involved with multiple appointments.” Patients aren’t only in good hands, but they are in the best hands when under the care of Dr. Fitzmaurice. Don’t miss the opportunity to to visit Phoenix Art Museum’s exhibition Edward Burtynsky: WATER. WATER, which is on display through Sept. 18, features Canadian artist Edward Burtynsky’s exploration of humanity’s increasingly stressed relationship with the world’s most vital natural resource. Burtynsky travelled the globe, from the Gulf of Mexico to the shores of the Ganges, crafting an ambitious representation of water’s increasingly fragmented lifecycle. In enormous, color prints Burtynsky’s aerial images trace the various roles that water plays in modern. Sometimes elegant, sometimes haunting, the abstract pictures hover between the worlds of painting and photography, forming a compelling global portrait of water that functions as an open-ended question about humanity’s past, present, and future relationship with the natural world. www.phxart.org.

FALL BACK TO FOOTBALL Kick off the 2016 season at one of these touchdown-worthy spots BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Culinary Dropout at The Yard
You probably know this Phoenix hot spot as a prime place to play backyard-style gams like corn hole, ping-pong and shuffleboard, but it’s also an equally great place to feel like you're at a "tailgate.” Genuine football grub includes dishes such as grilled cheese sliders, pork belly nachos and Thai chile chicken wings with cashew, toasted sesame, cabbage and lime. Because a good game is incomplete without a beverage in hand, sip on a cocktail (or two) like the bacon bloody mary or choose from a selection of cold beers, wines and more. www.culinarydropout.com.

Some features include animal-themed artwork, such as paintings, drawings, photography, ceramics, metal, furniture, clothing, among others. “The Furry Friends Fine Arts Festival will showcase unique works of art created by local artists, as well as the services and options that are available to the community such as pet adoptions, guide dogs, groomers, trainers, etc.,” James says. Whether you’re looking at the animalinspired art or visiting with vendors, there is something for every age to enjoy. SEPTEMBER 2016 |

Do you ever wonder who came up with your favorite dish at the local eatery you frequent? Enter brand chefs. These talented chefs dedicate their time to developing the recipes that you’ve come to crave. Here we get to know chef Chris Wolven, who cultivates recipes for restaurants including The Arrogant Butcher, The Greene House, The Henry and Wildflower. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A CHEF? My mother of course! That and the intensity of the kitchen really drew me in. There is never a dull moment. WHAT FOOD IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? Ooh…. I have so many! I’m a huge fan of “fancy” top ramen at the house, McDonalds breakfast and late night tacos from a truck. FAVORITE FOOD MEMORY: Christmas Eve dinner with my Godparents! A big pot of red sauce with tons of meat braising inside. It reminds me of the dinner scene from GoodFellas; without the guns, drugs and helicopters. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE TYPE OF CUISINE? I’ve been into Middle Eastern flavors lately, but need to be very open and versatile in my role, so I guess I’ve learned to love everything!
CHEF CONVERSATIONS
WHAT GOES INTO CREATING A RECIPE FOR FRC? Patience … and the ability to taste a lot of food.
In the Christopher Wolven, brand chef for Fox Restaurant Concepts’ boutiques region
WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE FRC DISHES YOU’VE DEVELOPED? We recently traveled to NYC to cook at the James Beard House – I’d have to say the lamb belly appetizer prepared for that dinner is at the top of my list.

HOW HAS BEING A CORPORATE CHEF AFTER BEING AN EXECUTIVE CHEF CHANGED YOUR PERSPECTIVE? You really start to see the big picture, and realize how important it is to continue to build strong, meaningful relationships with your teams. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A CORPORATE CHEF? I’m able to make larger impacts throughout the company. You really get the opportunity to work with and inspire so many talented chefs. It’s extremely gratifying.

PICTURE PERFECT PALOMA
Arcadia Tavern delivers a fresh take on tequila BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
G
iven Arcadia Tavern boasts 50-plus types of beer available by the bottle, can and on draft at any given time, the locally owned bar and restaurant has long had a reputation as more a brew-focused haunt. Thanks to a complete update of its beverage program, however, Arcadia Tavern is becoming a go-to hot spot for cocktail lovers across the Valley. Case in point – the Arcadia Paloma ($10). Developed in an effort to show guests that tequila can be used in more than just margaritas, every single sip is fizzy, fun and refreshing. “Our Paloma starts with tequila – the brand and type really do matter. We use Don Julio Reposado, which is made from 100% Blue Agave, double distilled and carefully matured in small oak barrels,” says Erica Norris, a long-time bartender at Arcadia Tavern. Norris mixes the tequila with housemade simple syrup to provide sweetness, adds a healthy pour of freshsqueezed grapefruit juice, and tops it with Cock’n’Bull Ginger Beer, much like one would top a Moscow Mule. “The result is a slightly bubbly tequila cocktail whose citrus flavors make your mouth feel like it is on vacation – or at the least, lounging by the pool.” 4801 E. 2017 JAGUAR F-PACE The British automaker adds an SUV to its lineup for the first time
T
BY JIM PRUETER
here’s an old saying that when you’re the last one to arrive at the party, you better be wearing the prettiest dress. As one of the last automakers without an SUV in its lineup, Jaguar called on design director Ian Callum to deliver on this task. And so, the legendary British marque adds the all-new F-PACE to its portfolio. Visually inspired by the F-TYPE sports car, the F-PACE features Jaguar’s current design language including the signature “J” blade headlamps found on the 2017 XE and XF sedans. Even the huge grille and lower air intakes are carryovers from Jaguar’s performance sedans. F-PACE borrows the minimalistic taillights from the original E-TYPE Jaguar sports cars.

From the bulging hood and clean side profile to the strong rear shoulders, the overall look recalls the strength, purity and agile stance of a feline, ready to pounce. Consistent with its sedan siblings, the interior is a near-perfect blend of sportiness and refined elegance with generous seating for five. The new InControl Touch infotainment system with an 8-inch touch-screen and Meridian sound system is standard; the Pro version, with a huge 10.2-inch screen, is optional. A unique innovation for runners and those with an active lifestyle is Activity Key, a waterproof wristband that allows you to leave the bulkier key fob in the vehicle and lock and unlock your car with just the wristband. F-PACE is available with a choice of three engine options, beginning with a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel with 180 horsepower starting at $40,990, followed by a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 in either 340 or 380 horsepower forms, from $42,390 and $56,700 respectively. The turbodiesel and 340-horsepower, V-6 versions come in Pure, Prestige, Portfolio or R-Sport trim levels. There are also S and First Edition models; the latter is limited stock. I drove both gas-engine models, and it really took back-to-back driving to discern any difference in power. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard on all models. The F-PACE S gets adaptive dynamics, which adjust the damping based on body and wheel movement for a smoother and more agile ride. Overall, the range of models, trim levels and options are vast and allow you to custom-build the F-PACE how you like it, but the price climbs easily with added options. Jaguar’s new SUV is easily more sports sedan-like than any rivals in its segment, and is an excellent choice for those seeking a true sports utility vehicle. During the day, take part in yoga on the jetty, watersports like kayaking and windsurfing, or a seaside massage while the kids hang out at the recently renovated Kids’ Club. Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit has 267 suites ranging from wellness suites with health-minded amenities to luxurious spa suites. Teak furnishings imported from Bali, soft neutral tones and tropical colors adorn the spaces, but most breathtaking are the suites’ ocean views. Particularly of note are the resort’s five-star gourmet dining options, the 16,500-square-foot spa, and its plethora of activities for kids, including a kids’ spa and the recently renovated Teens’ Club, which is so cool, you may find yourself wanting to hang out there! Jewel’s Bakery and Café, a local gluten-free destination founded by award-winning chef Julie Moreno, recently announced the debut of its new dinner menu. Among the list of unique comfort foods and lighter bites inspired from around the globe is the vegetable coconut curry. Rich and packed with flavors, this vegan stand out leaves nothing to be desired. The Indian classic ($14.75) is made with seasonal veggies, chickpeas, yellow curry, red cargo rice and golden raisins, adding a hint of sweetness to the nutty mixture. 4700 N. Central Ave., Phoenix 602.314.4660 www.famephx.com Fàme Caffe is located in what was once a number of past coffee houses. The simple, yet sleek redesign of the space represents the caliber of the menu. You won’t find anything overly complicated on the menu, only carefully crafted dishes that are elevated by the quality of locally sourced ingredients and an expert hand. The usual suspects are all accounted for, like veggie scrambles, breakfast sandwiches and huevos rancheros, and are all done perfectly. One serious standout on the menu is the Frenchie toast. This dish is made “pain perdu” style, which is more of a dessert style in France, making it a decadent breakfast option. The heady notes of vanilla and cinnamon dance through the thick slices of custard soaked bread. The Schreiner’s sausage served alongside the toast provides the perfect balance of sweet and spicy.

ou’ve likely heard it your whole life and, at times, stuck to the belief that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. With busy lives and a bounty of convenience foods at the ready, some of us have lost sight of this adage. Yet, since September is devoted to breakfast, this is the perfect time to get reacquainted with the ideal.
While breakfast at home or on the go may be a monotonous cycle of cereal, whole grain bars, scrambled eggs or toast, these local breakfast spots are serving up creative dishes, making breaking the fast far more exciting and enjoyable than any at-home option could. 6008 N. 16th St., Phoenix 602.241.1881 www.richardsonsnm.com/dickshideaway Calling this spot a hidden gem is both figurative and literal. Unless you know in advance what is hiding behind the luscious bougainvillea bushes, you would likely miss the culinary treasures behind its foliage. While the dining room is petite, that is no indication of the size of flavor coming out of the kitchen daily. Dick’s is a local favorite, mainly for the hospitality that the staff provides, whether you are a regular or a first timer. The restaurant is known for its spicy dinner entrees, and its breakfast items are served up with the same New Mexican flavors. The classic southwestern huevos rancheros is taken to the next level here with the eatery’s signature red or green chile sauce and blue corn tortillas. If you have a big appetite, Vic’s meatloaf and eggs is the way to go. The dish is big on size and flavor and served with three eggs, beans and either potatoes or hash browns, along with a flour tortilla. Use that tortilla to sop up every last fiery bit of chile sauce.

The breakfast menu is impressive and covers every possible craving you might have, and the retail grocery section offers some intriguing delights. You can get the standard eggs to order, some sweet French pancakes, but LGO’s breakfast burritos are where things get a little creative. A local favorite is the Ricky Martin. How could a breakfast burrito encapsulate all that spice and sass that is the Latin crooner? If you’re in a hurry, you can opt for the scratch-made bagels or pastries and you’ll definitely be pleased. he Valley’s hottest new bar is just a staircase away. Hidden beneath Arcadia’s Sip Coffee & Beer Garage – and accessible from a nondescript staircase within – is UnderTow, the latest innovation from the minds of Barter & Shake, of Counter Intuitive fame. “This adaptable use project has been years in the making. It just took a team of us putting our minds together – and finding some amazing partners – to make the dream a reality,” says Barter & Shake co-founder Rich Furnari, who along with beverage consultant Jason Asher – a past GQ Magazine “Bartender of the Year” and Jade Bar “Most Inspired Bartender” recipient, respectively – has been traveling across the country researching the resurgence in tiki-themed bar concepts for the past several years. According to Furnari, while the concept of tiki bars and cocktails gained popularity in the post-Prohibition 1930s and as an escape from the, well, depression of the Great Depression, the seeds for the movement date back to the early 1900s. “Before the Panama Canal helped ease transportation across North America, clipper ships were the fastest way to move goods across the continent by water,” Furnari explains. “Our entire concept is

based on the idea of these clipper ships actually sourcing and bringing the first ingredients that would inspire the tiki movement to the United States.” And that is an understatement. The 500-square-foot UnderTow space was once an oil change bay, and thanks to the imaginations of Wesley James of StarkJames and renowned tiki artist Danny Gallardo, Barter & Shake’s vision became a reality. Today, the space looks and feels as though you are on an authentic turn-ofthe-century clipper ship from your first step underground to your last sensational sip – portholes and all. And speaking of sips, there is something for everyone at UnderTow, including over a dozen classic tiki cocktails and 17 cocktails inspired by different elements of tiki culture. Food will be offered beginning in October, and will be made specifically to pair with the drink menu by Crudo’s own Cullen Campbell. The menu will be done in Dim Sum style, where guests can pick and choose small bites, mostly Asian-inspired, throughout the evening while still having a hand free for a cocktail. “At UnderTow, our ultimate goal is to give our guests an immersive experience and escape from the real world for a few hours, complete with sound, lighting, effects and a menu that plays on all five senses at once – and doing it all without the grass skirts,” Furnari says. UnderTow’s hours are WednesdayThursday from 4 p.m. to midnight and Friday-Saturday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. UnderTow is located inside Sip Coffee & Beer Garage, 3620 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; 602.753.6504; www.facebook.com/drinkundertow.
