MICHAEL FITZMAURICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board Certified Hand Surgeon
You’ve spent a lot of time and effort perfecting your serve and backhand. Unfortunately, the amount of practice it takes to excel at your game can also lead to pain, injury, and in extreme cases, an interruption in participating in the activities you love. Lateral epicondylitis, more commonly known as tennis elbow, is a repetitive motion injury of the elbow. While most common in tennis players, it can affect anyone. The revolutionary EndoTech® Endoscopic Tennis Elbow Treatment, available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, offers permanent, minimally invasive relief for tennis elbow. Through a small incision, endoscopic technology, and breakthrough plateletrich plasma therapy, which uses the body’s own healing mechanisms,

She’s always searching out the best stories to share with her viewers, whether from her hometown of Arcadia or across the state. We spoke with her about her career, what inspires her, and where her favorite spots are. Read her story on page 30. Dr. Fitzmaurice has performed thousands of minimally-invasive, endoscopic hand procedures in Arizona over the last decade.
You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb.
Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons. Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!
De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System.

MEET TOM SADLER
The man behind Arizona’s next biggest football championship BY JENNIFER PARKS PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ
If there’s one thing Tom Sadler loves this time of year, it’s football and leading the efforts behind Arizona’s next biggest football championship. As the CEO and president of the Arizona Organizing Committee, Sadler is leading the team helping to bring the continued… OCTOBER 2015 |

up close 2016 College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship to Arizona on January 11, 2016 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. “I want to see us host an outstanding national championship, but more than that, I’m hoping to create an event that the entire community wants to take part in, and one that we can be proud of for years to come,” says Sadler. Fans have more than just one game of activities to look forward to this January. The 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship includes a four-day celebration of college football, and a variety of events for the entire community to enjoy. Among the favorites? The Playoff Fan Central, a multi-day fan festival; Playoff Playlist Live!, a free outdoor music series; and Taste of the Championship, a culinary event, to name just a few. All of the events will be taking place at the Championship Campus presented by Ak-Chin Indian Community in Downtown Phoenix. Sadler says the Arizona Organizing Committee will also be hosting a Championship Tailgate before the national championship game in Glendale. This is only the second year of the new CFP format—Dallas was the first city to host, and Sadler says they certainly set the bar high for Arizona. “I think fans will notice some differences when the national championship is here in January because we are making an effort to really showcase what makes Arizona so special,” he says. “When outof-state visitors are here, or when fans tune in from home, we want them to see what makes this a great place to live, work and visit.” Sadler, who is a Phoenix resident himself and a father of two, says he is especially looking forward to having the Championship Campus serve as a hub for events and activities.
“I think we all saw how electric and exciting that format was this last January [during the Super Bowl] and that is something I am hopeful the community will get to experience again,” he shares. “This is a tremendous opportunity for the state. Hosting college football championships is certainly not new to Arizona. The 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship will be our eighth, the first under the new CFP format. On top of that, we’re in the middle of a three-year run of mega events.” Not only a tremendous opportunity for Arizona, but also for Sadler himself, who has become a huge football fan and who joined the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority as president and CEO in 2008. The majority of the 55-year-old’s

professional career was spent as a Division 1 collegiate athletics administrator: 20 years at Arizona State University and three years at the University of Hawaii. A graduate of Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich., which had no football team, Sadler admits that he’s now always a Sun Devils fan after earning his masters in public administration from Arizona State University. “We didn’t have a football team (at Aquinas College), so I can cross that one off the list. The Sun Devils are close to my heart, so I am pulling for them,” he says. But to get ready for the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship it is as big of job as it is an honor to organize all the events within the event. “It is quite an honor to be able to bring the national championship to Arizona, but it is truly a team effort. It takes the entire community—from our Arizona Organizing Committee staff and board members to the local business community and volunteers—to be able to host events of this size and scope, and host them successfully,” Sadler says. With all the moving parts and time that it takes to put on an event of this magnitude, this football fan says he’s thankful to have a community that rallies around itself and has risen to the occasion time and time again. “We’re working hard to ensure next year’s national championship is an outstanding experience so that we have the opportunity to bring these types of events, and another College Football Playoff National Championship, back to Arizona for years to come,” Sadler says. REDEFINING PERFECT
How Susan Kricun navigated a health crisis to help others BY KELLY POTTS PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ
A
fter building a successful career in the Valley, Susan Kricun is now adding a new focus to her realm—the practice of learning to love yourself, no matter what. “For a little over three years, I have been battling a health crisis,” she explains. “And, there were two options—either navigate to a new normal, or let this stop me from being me.” Kricun (www.susankricun.com) figured out a way to turn the challenges she’s been experiencing on her road to recovery into positive, healthy changes in her life. Through this, she developed a new mission to inspire a shift in the mindset of women through her personal experiences in better understanding the concepts of self-love and extreme self-care. Kricun has dreamed of writing a book, and that book is finally becoming a reality thanks to the lessons she’s gleaned these past few years. “If I can inspire even just one woman who is experiencing personal struggles with self-love to adopt the mindset that there’s beauty in imperfection, then this whole journey has been worth it,” she says. “Making a difference in someone else’s life gives my struggles and challenges meaning.
Etc.
What’s your advice for other professionals who are looking to chase new dreams? Take it one step at a time. Have an idea and a road map, and follow the steps—but don’t get lost in the finer details. Be open to different approaches to reach your end goal. What do the next few years look like for you? Getting out there and sharing my story! I am writing my first book, creating seminars, workshops and webinars, and doing more public speaking events to get my story out there and help others.

A NUTTY IDEA These products pack a powerful, helpful punch BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ
A
few years ago, Jeff Malkoon was living in South America when he noticed that the people of Uruguay were growing a lot of peanuts—but they didn’t have a lot of peanut products locally. Rather, they were shipping everything out of the country. He knew he wanted to help the people of the region, and so upon returning to the Unites States and his home here, he came up with, as he says, a nutty idea. “I started mixing up recipes in my mom’s kitchen when I got back,” he explains. “My goal was to create a line of premier, sweeter nut butters that better meet the palate of the international community.” And so in 2013, Peanut Butter Americano (www.pbamericano.com) was born. The company offers six flavors— Classico, Cinnamon Honey, Choco Blanco, Dark Chocolate, Peanut and Almond—that are carried at farmers markets across the state, as well as approximately 30 retailers. Part of the proceeds will go to help economic development in the Western Hemisphere.
Etc.
Do you have any favorite Peanut Butter Americano flavor? Not really. I don’t like to play favorites with my kids. When you aren’t working with peanuts, we’d typically find you… Working with almonds. This company is everything. What do you hope to see in five years with this company? We’re a Certified B Corp. We’re exporting heavily. Nutella’s on the ropes.

ammy Glassman, an associate broker at HomeSmart Real Estate, lives by the motto of being “all in.” Her motto defines both her personal and professional approaches to life—in everything, she gives her all. Glassman enacts her “all in” motto with her fashion selections, as well. She takes her business owner role seriously, and always dresses the part with a tailored look, such as a pencil skirt and top, or a dress and heels. “When I am out showing properties, sometimes 10-plus at a time, I will be wearing flats for sure!” she admits. When she isn't with clients, she likes to be “all in” and spend quality time with family and friends. Glassman keeps it classically comfy with Chucks and her latest obsession, lululemon Studio Pants, which she admits to wearing “all weekend long.” “The key to my wardrobe is finding clothes that are classic, that fit me well, and that allow me to move freely. The goal is fashion that allows me to be comfortable and ‘all in.’”
Wears classic styles BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ
Do you have fashion pieces that you cannot live without? I love my pencil skirts from White House | Black Market and have them in many colors, including white, beige, pink and black. You will always find me wearing my necklace with my baby shoes—a reminder of how lucky I am to be a mom. Where/who do you gain your fashion inspiration from? My mom. She has always worn the cutest clothes and is always comfortable. I remember as a child picking out outfits for her to wear when she volunteered at my school. Now my daughter, Eliana, does the same for me. Is your style a reflection of your personality? My fashion style definitely is a reflection of my personality. I am classic and fun all at the same time! While I have mostly neutral colors of black, navy, white and beige in my closet, I love to accent with colors like pink, red and green.

A stronger, toned and more flexible body and an improved state of mind encouraging relaxation, selfacceptance and awareness. “In a yoga class, you practice poses that require stretching and compression of the joints, muscles, ligaments and other supporting structures of the body.
Your body naturally protects itself from physical exertion by generating heat from the inside muscles outwards. We start with the heat up front…providing that extra protection from the very first poses. Your body burns fat more effectively and you lose inches of shape in a relatively short time”.

SENSE OF STYLE
A
man’s man. That’s the perfect way to describe Tom Simon, the sportswear director at The Clotherie at Biltmore Fashion Park. Simon originally began working with The Clotherie back in the 1970s, and worked there on-and-off ever since—and thus has had a long history with style both professionally and personally. “I find myself dressing more contemporary, not conservative,” says Simon. “I take a few more chances with my clothing such as more modern sneakers, Baldwin Jeans from Kansas City, and Eton shirts, which is a line from Sweden that we carry in the store.” Simon says typically you will find him wearing a sports coat and jeans or chinos in the store, and a couple of days a week you will find him sporting a tie, as well. When not in the store and out and about on the town, Simon says you will also find him fairly well put-together. “I don’t want to look like a slob. You never know who you are going to run into—especially a customer—so I want to look like I know what I’m doing.”
The Clotherie’s Tom Simon talks fashion BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ
What is your favorite part about working at The Clotherie? My clients and the ability to meet people at the top of their game. What is one thing in your closet that people might be surprised to hear you have? A vintage smoking jacket that belonged to the late Edward Guggenheim. What is a style trend you think is hot right now? Right now there is a crossover between the current American heritage-inspired casual clothing and a sophisticated version of West Coast surf. Brands like Faherty and Billy Reid are leading the way.

Sewell THE ARIZONA HIGHWAYS TELEVISION STAR TALKS BROADCAST JOURNALISM, WHAT TYPES OF PEOPLE INSPIRE HER, AND HER FAVORITE SPOTS AROUND THE STATE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY
Y
ou may know Robin Sewell from back in her anchor days with ABC 15. Or, you may know her from the long-running Arizona Highways Television, which debuted in 2004. Sewell is the creator, executive producer and host of Arizona Highways Television, which she loves and which suits her personality. “I am extremely inquisitive by nature, have a hunger for learning, and am fascinated by other people’s stories,” she says of what drew her to broadcast journalism initially. “I’m also an information junkie and I can never do enough research on all subjects. This, combined with my passion for writing, telling stories, wanting to get to know people from all walks of life, and yearning to experience a myriad of different places and cultures, drew me to journalism and reporting. Not to mention, I had a theatrical side and wanted to be ‘in front’ of the camera!” UPTOWN |
30
As Sewell explains, the career initially “found her.” “I was a Theatre Arts major in college and had aspirations to become a film director and actress. When I realized I was spending more time waiting tables than getting jobs, I knew it was time to find a career where I had more control of my destiny rather than leaving it up to luck. “The irony is that it was luck or fate that pointed me in this new direction. A well-known Los Angeles anchor who regularly came into the restaurant where I worked suggested that I consider broadcast journalism and introduced me to his news director. He then convinced me to get an internship at a television station, which I did. Then, within a month, I got my first job in television news as an assistant writer. I went on to become a reporter and eventually a prime time anchor, and worked for network affiliates | NOVEMBER 2015

across the country including Florida, San Diego, Seattle, Sacramento, and then here in Phoenix as the main anchor at ABC 15. However, not wanting the chapters of my book to be the same, I decided to switch careers and embark on a new challenge. I wanted to combine my storytelling skills with my former ‘entertainment’ aspirations and produce ‘feel good’ programing about a place I had grown to love and call home, and hence, in 2004, Arizona Highways Television was born. For Arizona Highways Television, Sewell and her team comb the state in search of unique stories and treasures about people, places and things. However, as she points out, it is so much more than just the 30-minute television show. “By showcasing what’s great in all these communities, we can help drive economic sustainability, especially in rural Arizona. We also do outreach events across the state called Celebrate Arizona, and help communities with marketing across various media platforms,” she says. “I feel like a kid in a candy store. I am always discovering new places, experiencing some sort of adventure, learning something new, or meeting someone with a great story. I also love the enthusiasm of our viewers who tell me they never knew somewhere existed until they saw it on the show, or that they went skydiving, rock climbing, traveled to another part of the state, or tried a new food because we introduced them to these experiences on Arizona Highways Television. I think Arizonans love Arizona, and our show showcases this great state.” In addition to her Arizona Highways Television role, Sewell owns Lonetree Productions and Sewell Media Group, which are content creators for various companies across all different media and digital channels. She helps companies strategize ways to communicate their brand and offers media training. But, that’s not all that’s on Sewell’s full plate. In addition to many public speaking engagements, she’s also working on new show concepts and is expanding her Arizona brand to include the business, technology and entrepreneurial sectors; is a mom; and oh yes, is a newlywed. There have been many defining career moments in Sewell’s life, and she points to two that have really resonated with her. “I had two moments in my career that were milestones. Covering 9/11 as a reporter changed me personally and taught me eternal gratitude and what was truly important in life. Watching the debut episode of Arizona Highways Television was a watershed moment because I was met with so much opposition as I was changing my career path from people who said that a local television show would never succeed, and I was so fearful

that I made a mistake and that they were right until the moment I saw on screen what we had created. Then, I knew that taking this leap of faith was one of the best decisions I’d ever made. “ Taking leaps of faith comes easier when you have people in your life who are helping to shape who you are. For Sewell, those people are her mom and daughter, and she draws inspiration from others around her, as well. “My mother for always believing in me and for constantly telling me I could become whatever I wanted to be,” she shares. “My daughter for teaching me to live in the moment, not to take myself seriously, and be grateful for all that I have. “I [also] have great admiration for those who look at obstacles as merely a welcome challenge they will overcome and who are not afraid to change the course of their lives. People who refuse to be victims and instead take responsibility for their happiness.” Since Sewell spends her days talking about other people’s neighborhoods, we asked her what she loved most about her life in Arcadia. “I love my ’hood because it is the quintessential neighborhood with treelined streets and homes that all look and feel different. People are outside walking their dogs, riding their bikes, jogging, and pushing their kids in strollers. It’s the kind of neighborhood where my daughter can have a lemonade stand and neighbors will turn their cars around to buy a cup and a cookie. Everything feels very local and homegrown, from the coffee shops, restaurants, grocery stores, yoga studio, juice bar, and yes, to even the pharmacist who knows your name. I love that we have the sweet familiarity and flavor of a neighborhood within a metropolitan city.” As for what she loves around the state, Sewell points to the fun restaurants in North Central and the theatre and museums and funky shops in Downtown Phoenix. “I am also in awe of Sedona’s landscape and love the hiking in Northern Arizona. Everyone in this state needs to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Some of my other favorite places include Prescott, the White Mountains, Bisbee, Tubac and Tucson. It’s really tough for me to choose a favorite because I’ve had so many fun adventures, from Yuma to Lake Havasu to Alpine to Sierra Vista and in between!” Adventures she is definitely having, and she’s obviously loving every minute. For this inquisitive storyteller, this was the perfect career. Watch Arizona Highways Television on Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. on KPNX 12 News and Sundays at 4:30 p.m. on 12 News. COMPANY NAME: The High Road Design Studio YEAR FOUNDED: 2013 WHAT IT IS: A design studio specializing in the design needs of cannabis retail businesses, which has been featured in such places as Forbes magazine.
INFO: www.thrdesignstudio.com What inspired you to found this? My belief in the benefits of design. My passion for the cannabis experience. My intuition that cannabis retail was/is our country’s next great social experience. After being involved in the cannabis industry for six years, I had to find a way to elevate these businesses and help them better serve their patients and communities. What was the most difficult challenge you faced? Inventing a career based on intuition and passion. And, convincing the cannabis retail industry that design was and is essential to its success. What was the biggest lesson you learned? The importance of good contracts and clear communication, especially when selling professional services to an unstable industry. What is one thing you wish people had told you? That a career based on intuition and passion requires more time, money, sweat and tears than you ever could expect. What do you hope is the future of the company? More clients. More challenges. More success. More talented team members. More innovation.

Kelley Bird, 45, Keely Newman, 45 COMPANY NAME: Grabbagreen® YEAR FOUNDED: 2013 WHAT IT IS: Grabbagreen is a fast food and juice restaurant where great-tasting, healthy food meet the speed and convenience of traditional fast food. There are currently three Valley locations. And, the pipeline of committed franchise stores since Grabbagreen’s franchise announcement in April now contains more than 16 franchise deals signed, and more than 150 development agreements that are slated to open over the next several years around the U.S. INFO: www.grabbagreen.com What inspired you to found this? We were moms and childhood friends, and found it increasingly difficult to feed our growing families nutritious meals between sports and all of the other extracurricular activities. Cooking was not always an option, and we were fed up with unhealthy fast food options. With convenience and health consciousness in mind, we decided to create Grabbagreen, a place to quickly grab healthy, whole and organic food. What was the most difficult challenge you faced? Operations. Neither one of us had prior restaurant experience, so we were challenged in the beginning with the immense popularity and lines in the store, and executing our orders in a timely and accurate manner.
What was the biggest lesson you learned? That anything is possible if you put everything you have into it. It is incredible when your vision comes to life, and with the success of Grabbagreen in less than three years, we truly are leading the charge in making fast food healthy. What is one thing you wish people had told you? “No” will never come between you and your dream job.

COMPANY NAME: State Forty Eight LLC YEAR FOUNDED: 2013 WHAT IT IS: A clothing company for men, women and children offering items where “Arizona passion meets Arizona fashion.” INFO: www.statefortyeight.com What inspired you to found this? We are Arizona born and raised and we share a passion for this great state. From Arizona sports teams to the beautiful outdoors and the diverse culture, there is a lot to be proud of and we wanted to give people a stylish way to showcase that local pride. What was the most difficult challenge you faced? Balancing State Forty Eight with our full-time jobs. It limited what we could do and we sacrificed a lot of our free time to work on the company— but we’ve come a long way, and between the three of us, we have done a great job growing the business.
PHOTO BY JENNICA MAES, AMAES PHOTOGRAPHY
What was the biggest lesson you learned? Realizing that being a business owner doesn’t always mean you are right or that your ideas are the best ones. Listen to people who have been there before you, and most of all, listen to your customers. That’s key. What do you hope is the future of the company? We would like for State Forty Eight to become the apparel line of Arizona. We aim to be a household name within the community while still appealing to tourists. Down the road, we hope to create even more options for our customers and make the clothing more physically accessible in other parts of the state. It’s only up from here.

COMPANY NAME: Yazamo YEAR FOUNDED: 2012 WHAT IT IS: A digital marketing company that counts names like Arianna Huffington as clients. INFO: www.yazamo.com What inspired you to found this? I spent my senior year in college sleeping on a broken air mattress. I started my business out of a necessity to survive. What was the most difficult challenge you faced? About a year ago we grew too fast and discovered we didn’t have a scalable and repeatable business model. We lost a few customers and a huge chunk of our revenue. What was the biggest lesson you learned? It’s critical to find ways to manage and deal with stress. My favorites are exercise, nutrition, meditation, prioritizing tasks, and growing a thicker skin.

What is one thing you wish people had told you? I wish someone drilled into me the need to set aside money for taxes! What do you hope is the future of the company? Our goal is to connect 20 million consumers with companies that will provide value and leave a positive impact on them over the next five years.

COMPANY NAME: Apex Fun Run YEAR FOUNDED: 2011 WHAT IT IS: A company that collaborates with school PTO/As and faculty to build student leaders through a meaningful, “hassle-free” and financially successful school fun run. The company is already a national franchise, with more than 60 franchisees. INFO: www.apexfunrun.com What inspired you to found this? The desire to help hardworking teachers, like Scott’s wife, by providing money for their classroom, and build tomorrow’s leaders by teaching students leadership skills and fitness awareness, all while raising much needed funds for schools. What was the most difficult challenge you faced? Creating the technology to support the program and enable schools to raise more money. What was the biggest lesson you learned? Outsource things that are not your core competencies. You can’t be good at everything.
What is one thing you wish people had told you? How difficult it can be for people to take the risk of buying a franchise and leaving their stable salaried jobs... What do you hope is the future of the company? To be the organization that helps raise the most money for schools in America.

Creativity is the new black. What was the most difficult challenge you faced? Money. Time. They are both the same. There is only one me in my business and I’m wearing all the hats. What was the biggest lesson you learned? The only thing that matters in business is people. Period. Connect with your tribe. Honor your tribe. Kindness is the only way.

What is one thing you wish people had told you? If someone had told me sooner to make a map to get me from point A to point B instead of wandering organically with an open heart, I probably wouldn’t have listened to them. Big Exhibit, Local Tie
When the internationally acclaimed fashion design exhibit, The White Shirt According to Me. Gianfranco Ferré makes its U.S. debut at Phoenix Art Museum on Nov. 4, there is one angle that makes its debut even more special—one of Gianfranco Ferré’s former models, Clarissa Burt, lives here in Phoenix. Burt will act as a community ambassador while the exhibit is in the country. Organized by Gianfranco Ferré Foundation and Prato Textile Museum Foundation, the exhibition displays 27 of Ferré’s most significant white shirts dating from 1982 to 2006, for an in-depth overview of his career. The white shirt had been a major theme throughout his 30-year career, and one of his hallmarks. Beyond the physical garment, sketches, technical designs, photographs and videos from the archives of the Gianfranco Ferré Foundation further invite attendees to examine his methods and precise techniques for each design. The exhibit runs through March 6, 2016. www.arizonacostumeinstitute.org. UPTOWN |

ver the past year, Dr Erik Svans and Dr Steven Chang have treated 100’s of teeth with a revolutionary procedure to correct Gingival Recession away from a procedure called Pinhole Surgical Technique™ or PST™. The results have been very impressive, without the need for suturing and cutting donor tissue from your palate, which was required for Traditional Gingival Grafting. Focusing on solving the original cause of the recession first (overzealous brushing, history of periodontal disease, bruxism), and treating the affected sites with PST™ second, Dr Svans and Dr Chang have been able to provide an alternative to Gingival Recession Correction

ongtime Phoenix resident Martha Shemer wanted to give something back to the community. So, she searched for a well-located, scenic property and found the perfect home in the Arcadia community—it was the first house ever built in the neighborhood. Since that day in 1984 when she purchased the house with help from the City of Phoenix, Shemer Art Center & Museum has come to life. One of Shemer’s goals was to preserve the historic property and provide a community art center for residents. Today, it provides a home for the arts, and nurtures creativity and imagination. Since its creation, Shemer Art Center has become a cultural center for all ages. The center has quickly become one of the best spots in the Valley for artists and art lovers alike. It is a City of Phoenix Point of Pride, and was recently named one of the 10 best museums in Phoenix by USA Today. The museum has a permanent collection consisting of over 100 artworks by contemporary Arizona artists. The exhibits switch eight to 10 times a year, and each is on display for four to six weeks. And, keeping the local tradition alive, the museum recently launched an outdoor sculpture competition. The sculptures that are chosen will be displayed in the outdoor sculpture garden for two years, beginning this month. This year, one of most popular

In its tradition of supporting local artists, Shemer Art Center & Museum also hosts community outreach exhibits, such as the New Horizons High School art exhibit, which showcases talented juniors and seniors from around the Valley. In addition to featuring already established local artists, the center helps aspiring artists perfect their craft. There are several art classes offered throughout the year, including drawing, painting, print-making, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, photography, metals and jewelry-making. TREADING THE
GASTRONOMIC POSSIBILITIES
THE FLYING PIGEON FOOD TRUCK
Imagine a food truck that specializes in world fusion fare, inspired by real people, travels, and recipes passed down for generations. One with a diverse menu, its cuisine an original medley of ethnic twists and fresh, exciting flavors. Sounds amazing, right? Now imagine you can find it parked at the same place you trust to fix your car – and operated by the same people who have spent nearly two decades educating their customers on the fundamentals of auto repair. It’s the slightly-strange-but-totally-true story behind The Flying Pigeon, Phoenix’s newest addition to the thriving food truck scene. The chefs, husband and wife team Shahe and Lena Koulloukian, are well-known as the owners of Mazvo Auto Car Care. They have earned a reputation locally as providers of expert automotive service, and have raised the stakes on the perception of auto repair shops. But they’ve never been able to showcase their extensive culinary training and restaurant experience, at least not to the general public… until now. Incorporating local and organic ingredients, The Flying Pigeon’s mission is to serve high-quality, gourmet-casual food – with a flair for the fun and funky. Even the names of the dishes highlight the fun-loving fare (“Korean Wedgy,” anyone?). “We try and stay away from the monochromatic composition style of food,” says Shahe. “With a name like The Flying Pigeon, it’s
hard to take ourselves too seriously, and we’re okay with that.” While the idea for The Flying Pigeon may have originated on a trip to L.A., the Koulloukians are continually inspired by their fellow Phoenician foodies. “The culinary reawakening of high-end food at street prices is most definitely something we recognize here in Phoenix,” says Shahe. “There’s much love for all of the food trucks vitalizing the street food scene.” Though The Flying Pigeon will be making appearances at festivals and food truck roundups, its home base is right on the property of Mazvo Auto Car Care. Mazvo will continue as usual with its normal Monday through Friday hours – but as soon as the sun goes down, the space at 4610 North 7th Street transforms into a whimsical pop-up restaurant. Lights, tables, chairs, music, and movies keep diners comfortable and entertained, while The Flying Pigeon’s global cuisine takes them on a gastronomic adventure featuring flavors from the Far East to Philly. Shahe and Lena strive to maintain their food truck the same way they have Mazvo Auto Repair: with the utmost quality, backed by sincere smiles, familiar faces, and a fun, relaxed experience. Servicing hungry customers and their cars? Why not! The Koulloukians are excited to share their passion for food and their vibrant culinary heritage with the community – while continuing to set the bar for excellence in automotive repair. After all, variety is the spice of life.

Internationally acclaimed British artist Bruce Munro (www.brucemunro.co.uk) will share his interpretation of the Sonoran Desert with an array of materials and hundreds of miles of fiber optics set throughout the Garden in a custom installation. Munro, who is best known for immersive large-scale, light-based installations, is inspired by his interest in shared human experiences. He records his responses to things such as music, literature, science, and the world around him in a sketchbook, and then creates both monumental temporary experiential artworks and intimate story pieces from his inspirations. This exhibit, which uses light, glass, water bottles, acrylics and pottery, will include Field of Light. It will feature 30,000 individual spheres of gently blooming light nestled on the side of the Garden Butte, cascading down onto the Sonoran Desert Nature Loop Trail, and is a unique iteration of Munro's best-known artwork. Other pieces include Saguaro, the colossal cactus, which stands as a marker, to show what caught Munro's imagination and how that time and place was interpreted. Munro's desert inspiration continues

with Temperate Zone, his interpretation of the ingenious cooling pots created by the indigenous communities in Arizona hundreds of years ago, as well as WaterTowers, where 69 colored towers will grace the Garden among the iconic saguaro. The prismatic monumentality of Chindi will suspend in elegant form from the structures in the Sybil B. Harrington Succulent Gallery. Elsewhere Eden Blooms, Beacon, and Fireflies will further engage in dialogue with visitors and the desert landscape. "It is an honor to have been invited to exhibit as part of the Desert Botanical Garden arts program and to present my work for the first time in the desert landscape,” says Munro. “I have always been fascinated with landscape and none more so than the desert. Indeed Uluru in Central Australia was the place that inspired Field of Light. It is a landscape I am constantly drawn to. It was for this reason that the Sonoran Desert held a familiarity for me. Spending time in the Desert Botanical Garden felt like a homecoming of sorts. I will never forget the clarity of light like cut crystal, a dry desert heat, and the sentinel cacti. And of course, joyfully pondering these thoughts at the end of the day under the vapor cloud of a veranda mister.”

Heart disease and stroke are the number one and number four killers in Arizona. The commitment of Valley donors each year continues to make an immeasurable impact on crucial American Heart Association research, awareness, and funding that can save lives. This year, the Heart Ball honors beloved Valley philanthropists Billie Jo and Judd Herberger for their decades-long passion for the American Heart Association.

TABLE THAT
These handcrafted side tables are the epitome of functional art BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
These beautifully handcrafted side tables, called Pueblo Plum, are available in walnut, pine, dark cottonwood and light cottonwood, and are part of Millicent’s classic line of wooden furniture. They include hand-carved relief patterns on the exterior. The patterns were inspired by owner and designer Emily Henry’s upbringing in Taos, New Mexico. She grew up on the edge of Taos Pueblo, and along the acequias (irrigation ditches) dense thickets of wild plum grew. These are available in both two-door and three-door options, and can be ordered by a designer through John Brooks Showroom at the Scottsdale Design Center, 2712 N. 68th St., Scottsdale. Designer net pricing for the side tables starts at $10,373.

2016 LEXUS RX
The popular luxury RX gets a bold makeover BY JIM PRUETER
F
or almost two decades, the Lexus RX has been the benchmark for luxury midsized crossovers and SUVs. The yard marks are wide, but you’re going to shell out anywhere between $45,000 and $70,000 to purchase one. The competitive set includes the cream of the crop: Audi Q5, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and a few others. I recommend leasing such nonsense. Price notwithstanding, this segment is growing so fast, it seems that within five years, Americans will be issued one with their learning permits. You just knew that when Lexus decided to redo the RX, it was going to be awesome. And it is. The RX is a fantastic vehicle and has been a huge seller—absolutely saving the brand for more than a decade. NOVEMBER 2015 |

There’s no denying that Lexus makes some of the world’s best and most beautiful automobiles. I can’t help thinking the RX would have won the Lexus swimsuit contest had it not been the latest of its siblings born with the “spindle” grille. More about that in a minute. Slip into the driver’s seat and you’ll be greeted by Lexus’s handsome, rational interior, lined in lustrous aluminum trim, gorgeous wood veneers, French-stitched leather dash and door gussets, perforated leather seats, and an immense array of technological features. Among the exterior details, Lexus presents a challenging bit of design with the RX’s unfortunate proboscis. Let’s say it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. The cavernous opening of the brand’s signature grille, set between spear-shaped LED light tubes and severe sanguinary headlamps, encompasses nearly the entire front end. It’s even more acrimonious and equivocal than the one adorning the new NX compact crossover. I couldn’t stop looking at the maw—like that of Donatella Versace— more out of ravenous bewilderment and curiosity than enchantment. Behind the grille is the familiar 3.5liter V-6 that makes 295-horsepower and is mated to a new eight-speed transmission. There’s also an RX450h hybrid model powered by the 3.5-liter V-6 and an Atkinson electric motor for a combined 308 horsepower. The hybrid model sports a less-in-your-face grille. We drove three different RX models and each was consistently smooth, quiet, well constructed, and delivered more-thanadequate power. All told, the new RX is by far more visually outgoing in its redesign. We’re guessing it will not only appeal to RX loyalists, but will bring converts to the brand. Overall, a smart pick for a luxury five-passenger crossover. Automotive writer Jim Prueter is a spokesperson for AAA, and his auto reviews and travel stories appear nationally in print and online. HEAR THIS Are you ready for the world’s first 3D printed headphones? BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOS BY ERIC NATHAL
W
ith technology so prevalent nowadays, it seems everyone has a pair of headphones. But not everyone has a pair of these. V-MODA, a company known for its high-fidelity headphones, recently introduced the world’s first 3D printed, custom-designed headphones. Want your family crest on your headphones? No problem. What about a design you’ve created? Yes, that’s fine, too. Everything is customizable. Fist you pick the base color and 3D shield materials (choices include stainless steel, solid 14k gold, 14k rose gold, 14k white gold, and platinum), and then you choose one of V-MODA’s own designs, or you can upload your own to them for use.
“This new offering is not merely a game changer, it is the first time in history mass customization merges jewel-grade 3D printing with consumer electronics,” says Val Kolton, CEO of V-MODA. “Additive manufacturing for wearable technology is not only a product, but a 360-degree service and paradigm-shift for design and manufacturing.” Fiber 3D shields are included in the purchase of a new XS and Crossfade M-100, and the custom ones are compatible with the hundreds of thousands of V-MODA Crossfade series and XS headphones that are already in use, says the company.

“3D printing has captured the imaginations of people, but this is the first application that can be worn every day on an award-winning product. This technology ends the ubiquity of carbon copy, plastic consumer electronics and ushers in an era of bespoke designs and metals that transform products into hand-crafted designer relics,” says Val Kolton. “What seemed impossible is now a reality with V-MODA’s new platform.” The prices range from $200$40,000. www.v-moda.com.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK
What’s not to love about the city that never sleeps? BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
PHOTO BY NYC & COMPANY/WILL STEACY
B
right lights, big city—yes, it’s true that New York is the city that never sleeps. Wander outdoors in the middle of the night and there’s a good chance you can still find a restaurant open somewhere, and people still out and about.
Sights If New York is on your bucket list, there are few must-include sights to see. To get a perspective on the city, start with the Top of the Rock Observation Deck, where you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views of the city below. A walk through Central Park should also be on your list—an oasis in the middle of buildings, with expanses of green grass in the summer and winter snow and an ice rink in the winter, with lots of little nooks and crannies to investigate. For those of you who enjoy art, there are enough museums to keep you busy for a long time. The Metropolitan Museum of Art should be one that makes your list. If you’re able to, get tickets to a show on Broadway or at Radio City Music Hall. There are also many TV shows that film in the City, though you often need to get tickets well in advance. Though touristy, don’t leave without a visit to Times Square— the energy there is palpable (and I’m partial to the M&Ms store nearby, as well!). You’ll also want to make sure you stroll through Little Italy and Chinatown. NOVEMBER 2015 |
Now that it’s getting to be holiday time, you should also head to Rockefeller Center—the Christmas Tree will be lit this year on Dec. 2, and it’s a great way to ring in the holiday season. Of course, so is taking a spin on the ice rink there, as well! One other must-see is The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum. There are no words to describe it, except to say that you need to go.
Staying There From The Plaza Hotel to the Four Seasons Hotel New York, there are more hotels than you can count. One popular locale is the W Hotels New York, which has five locations throughout the city. They are all great, though the one on Lexington and the one in Times Square are my personal favorites due to their convenient locations. Bonus—you receive Bliss Spa products in your bathroom at all W Hotels!
Food Food, oh the food. It’s everywhere, and oh so good. You can simply restaurant hop, or take a food tour, but make sure you pick up all the basics, from bagels to “New York pizza,” as well as gourmet eats. Two favorite stops for dessert are Serendipity 3 for its famous frozen hot chocolate and Schmackary’s for its cookies.
Nightlife You won’t want for things to do at night in New York. Whether you’re into clubs, pubs or bars, or comedy clubs or coffee shops, there’s something open somewhere nearby. New York truly is the city that never sleeps, and if there’s something you’re looking for—from culture to music to food and more—you’ll find it here.

elvedere Vodka, created exclusively from Polish Dankowskie Rye and quadruple-distilled to create the perfect balance of character and purity, has long been known as the world’s first luxury vodka. Completely free of additives, including sugar or glycerin, the product has long been lauded for its naturally smooth finish and bold character. So, it is no surprise that the brand has now aligned with another smooth, bold character—James Bond. This November, Belvedere is officially partnering with 007 himself to create collector’s edition bottles in honor of SPECTRE, the highly anticipated 24th installment of the James Bond series, which will be released on Nov. 6 in theatres nationwide.
The SPECTRE
The Belvedere 007 SPECTRE Bottle features the iconic James Bond gun barrel. A closer look reveals the mark of the SPECTRE organization and a recipe for the timeless “Shaken Not Stirred 007” martini. Available at most high-end grocery stores, pricing starts at $24.99.
The SABER
The 1.75L Belvedere 007 Silver Saber Bottle features elegant lines and a polished metallic finish. Etched by a laser, the iconic 007 mark illuminates in homage to the cutting-edge style celebrated by Belvedere and Bond. The Silver Sabers will be available at high-end nightlife venues including the W Scottsdale, Maya Day + Night Club, Dakota, and Bottled Blonde. Pricing will vary. UPTOWN |

TACO THE TOWN BY TARYN JEFFRIES
W
e are blessed to live in a place where tacos are bountiful and seem to be on every menu, no matter where you go to eat. What makes a taco great can cause a heated debate, but we scoured all the menus we could get our hands on and tastetested countless hand-held treats to find the best our neighborhoods have to offer. Whether you are looking for the flavors of street tacos or something more non-traditional or gourmet, these local spots have you covered.
La Santisima Gourmet Taco Shop 1919 N. 16th St., Phoenix 602.254.6330 www.lasantisimagourmet.com You’ll never hear the food at La Santisima described as “TexMex.” The owners have worked hard to change the perception of Mexican food here in the Valley. You’ll find dishes that celebrate the flavors found just off the beaches of Cancun and Baja. The creative dishes here show a passion for cooking and a desire to elevate your expectations. UPTOWN |

What to order: Aztec Tinga Taco: The chicken is full of flavor, never dry, and paired with pickled onions and an Aztec chipotle salsa. The sharp flavors of the onions pair with the smokiness of the salsa. You can dress your taco with your choice of salsa at the massive salsa bar. | NOVEMBER 2015
food files Otro Café 6035 N. 7th St., Phoenix 602.266.0831 www.otrocafe.com Chef Doug Robson has taken everything that was wonderful about Gallo Blanco and infused it into Otro Café. You’ll find fresh, atypical Mexican cuisine that exhibits a passion and love for the culture and regional flavors. They offer seven different types of tacos, all with a quirky spin on what one might perceive as traditional dishes. The urban spin that Otro Café puts on these time-tested traditional items creates a fun and playful atmosphere where you just want to try everything. What to order: The Pork Belly Tacos will delight your palate with the richness of the slow-roasted heritage pork belly dressed with a citrus glaze and then dusted with spice relish and avocado. The citrus glaze manifests itself in an almost marmalade state, and that sweetness, paired with the salt of the pork and the richness of the fat of the belly, are nothing short of perfection.
Taco Guild 546 E. Osborn Road, Phoenix 602.264.4143 www.tacoguild.com The building that Taco Guild inhabits has a rich history, having once been a one-room schoolhouse and later a church. The creators of Taco Guild have embraced that history of the Guilds of the 1600s in Western Europe by creating a space where their culinary master craftsmen provide an overall experience that showcases their talents, from the plate to the overall surroundings. What to order: If you are looking for something traditional, you’ll enjoy the Pork Adovada taco. The tried and true flavors of salty pork and sweet mango jicama relish play off of each other in the most delightful way. New school more your style? The Chipotle Cherry taco is comprised of steak poblano straws, chili aioli and blue cheese, creating an unexpected combination of flavors.
Sierra Bonita Grill 6933 N. 7th St., Phoenix 602.264.0700 www.sierrabonitagrill.com Sierra Bonita Grill truly sets itself apart as an Arizona original, paying homage to Arizona history and its Western traditions. The restaurant has a rustic charm without being campy with its wooden beams and original artwork adorning the walls. The restaurant itself was named after a historic Arizona ranch. The menu is imaginative, combining Old World traditional dishes with New World techniques and flavors. What to order: The Marinated Carne Asada Tacos combine perfectly seasoned meat with a creamy pesto mayonnaise, cabbage, salsa fresca, panela cheese, rice and beans. The panela NOVEMBER 2015 |
cheese, a crumbly cheese, provides a fun texture to the creaminess of the pesto mayo and the strong flavors of the marinated meat.
Joyride Taco House 5202 N. Central Ave., Phoenix 602.274.8226 www.joyridetacohouse.com Joyride Taco House has quickly become a Valley favorite for its fun environment and delicious cocktails. It offers a variety of tacos with varying degrees of spice and complexity. As a bonus, all of the tacos are served on made-to-order corn tortillas, and they even offer gluten-free options. What to order: For the best taco experience, be sure to get The Bandit Taco Platter. With that you will be able to enjoy their three best tacos: Chicken Tinga, Carne Asada and Carnitas. In addition to the tacos, you will also get fresh corn torn tortillas, rice, black beans, avocado, and their own pico gringo. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in all the flavors they have to offer.
Most Wanted Taco Shop 9822 N. 7th St., Phoenix 602.943.1156 www.mostwantedtacoshop.com Sometimes when heading into a new restaurant it can be hard to figure out the best option for you to order since you’re not familiar with their preparation or seasonings. The beauty of Most Wanted is that they will let you sample their meats prior to submitting your order, to ensure that you know what you’re getting. Be warned, while this may seem super helpful, you may quickly fall in love and find it difficult to choose just one meat! What to order: Build your own! With the option to test-drive all of the flavors, you will easily be able to find the perfect-for-you flavors. Can’t quite decide on one combination? They offer small and large tacos, so order up as many small tacos as you can handle, and enjoy!

P
hoenix has a new concept in urban gardening. DIG IT urban gardens and nursery opened recently on 16th Street—part urban garden, part community space, part artisan hub. The concept is fun, a little bit funky, and completely homegrown. When Baker’s Nursery closed in 2014 after more than 45 years in the Valley, residents felt the void. Two Arizona natives, Tim Bishop and Ryan Jerrell, thought it was the perfect opportunity to turn their love for plants into a business that could also give back to the local community.
Community Roots Bishop, a lifelong Phoenix resident and landscape designer, and business partner Jerrell from Mesa, were both plenty passionate about plants. They conceived a unique idea to create a centrally located neighborhood hangout that combined quality organic plants and practical knowledge with a hub for art and food events. To get the project off the ground, they turned to that very community for help. A GoFundMe.com campaign raised $150,000 for the concept. They broke ground in August and in just a few short months, transformed the space on 16th Street into a 22,000-square-foot boutique nursery.

“With our combined passion and love for plants,” explains Bishop, “we had a vision to create a business to promote green, healthy living. We want to share our knowledge with others so that they can achieve their garden goals at home.” Bishop explained that DIG IT hopes to be an epicenter of knowledge and innovation. The inspiring environment— think plants draped on suitcases, air plants growing out of margarita glasses, and secondhand furniture as display cases—will hopefully showcase ways customers can use plants they haven’t previously considered. DIG IT wants to also keep everything environmentally friendly. Packaging is recycled, biodegradable, compostable, or at least a more eco-friendly option than you might find in one of the big box stores. In addition to plants, you can pick up pottery, trellises and garden art supplied by local artisans.
Event Hub In addition to the plants, DIG IT hopes to become a neighborhood hangout. Bishop and Jerrell plan to host gardening seminars, art events, and even serve as a foodie venue. With a plant-savvy staff that offers impeccable customer service, along with the hip space, DIG IT hopes to become a central hub for the neighborhood. Jerrell envisions a bright future. “We hope this space inspires a new generation of plant-lovers.” DIG IT urban gardens and nursery is open 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. daily at 3015 N. 16th St., Phoenix; www.digphx.com.
