Experts in MonaLisa Touch News Update: The MonaLisa Touch has now been FDA approved in the U.S. for over 2 years and at Arizona Women’s Care more than 1000 procedures have brought amazing results to women across the Southwest region. This amazing NON HORMONAL treatment for vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, frequent bladder or vaginal infections and other symptoms that result from a lack of estrogen has revolutionized our success in treating these disheartening issues. In a recent Stanford University study, reductions in dryness and painful intercourse were especially marked, dropping an average of 75% and 66% respectively. As Lindsay (age 56) states, “I was skeptical, but I needed to try something. After the 3 treatments, intercourse was so much better I could not believe it. I actually asked my husband if we could do it again, and he was shocked! It has made such a difference in our relationship.” The MonaLisa Touch uses fractional CO2 laser therapy

to regenerate collagen and rid the vaginal mucosa of the dry atrophic cells. Three simple treatments in the office 6 weeks apart have shown incredible improvements in vaginal atrophy. These treatments take about 5 minutes and are virtually painfree, no anesthesia is needed. As women caring for women, our expertise and customer service are unsurpassed in the valley. Our staff of all-female physicians were the 1st board certified OB/GYNS in the state of Arizona to perform the MonaLisa Touch procedure. We welcome you to any of our open house seminars to learn more about the MonaLisa Touch! You will have the opportunity to meet with the doctors and talk with the patients who have had this life changing procedure. One last testimonial from Rhonda (age 61) sums up why we do what we do, “Thank you Arizona Women’s Care for offering me the MonaLisa Touch! It is an amazing treatment. I am 100% back to feeling like I did 20 years ago!”

TELL

I get asked all the time if I’m going to use my journalistic writing abilities to pen a novel one day. But, it takes a very special mind to turn their words into a book – whether fiction or nonfiction. Case in point is our cover feature, Anita Kaltenbaugh. Known to the literary world as A.K. Smith, the Phoenix-based writer’s nonfiction travel tips book hit No. 1 on Amazon and she recently released her first fiction book in the mystery category, with plans for a third novel – this time in the young adult category – in the works. We spoke with Anita about the work it takes to buckle down and write a novel (something I’m not sure I have patience for), the reality of rejection and the persistence you need when approaching publishers. Though she has traveled much of the world and has lived in many places, Anita payed homage to her Phoenix residence by including some Valley hot spots in her new release. Speaking of Phoenix-area hangouts, we’re highlighting the top places in Phoenix and Scottsdale to take your dogs to (think free water bowls and fun dog treats and menus) on page 74. What can be better than a sunny, cool day hanging with your pup on a patio? And because we’re now in the thrust of our beautiful fall days and nights, with Thanksgiving approaching, we’re all craving the autumn flavors we all know and love. We’ve rounded up some seasonal libations – featuring flavors like apple, cinnamon and caramel – on page 70. 'Tis also the season to go out and have a good time! If you’re over 40, or just looking for a more mature adventure, we’ve rounded up some of the best bars and restaurants to have a night out, from cocktail lounges to neighborhood spots to catch a game and chow down on some wings (page 46). Have a great Thanksgiving, Gabby Richman Editor-in-Chief gabby@richmanmediagroup.com Find our magazine on Facebook!

Are Non-compete Agreements Legal?

Creative Directors In the business world, non-compete clauses have become increasingly common. A non-compete agreement is a contract designed to prevent employees from entering into business activity that directly competes with their former employer after finding new employment. Ordinarily, employees are barred from entering into certain business activities for a specified period of time. Arizona residents and employees ought to be aware of these agreements and whether they are legally enforceable in Arizona. Arizona courts will typically enforce a non-compete agreement if: • The agreement protects a legitimate business interest • The non-compete is reasonable in both its scope and duration • The agreement does not violate Arizona public policy in any way If a court finds that certain provisions of a non-compete are unreasonable, do not protect legitimate business interests or violate public policy, they can eliminate any and all provisions of the agreement. This is not to say that the entire non-compete will be legally invalid, however. In short, non-competes are generally going to be legally enforceable, even if there are certain provisions that will be removed from the agreement. If you have any questions about non-compete agreements or take issue with a specific provision of a non-compete, discuss the matter with an Arizona employment lawyer.

CAN YOUR HOUSE DO THIS? VALI Homes’ healthier, happier dwellings

On average, Americans spend at least 12 hours a day home. That is over 4,380 hours in a home per year that may not be working for your health or finances. Enter VALI Homes. Partners Austin Trautman, Matthew Salenger and Adrian Bell strived to find a solution to the

problems people face with the “everyday home.” Together, they have created homes that give buyers an alternative housing option of leaving a smaller footprint, while keeping the style and necessities of a home. The team at VALI Homes (www.valihomes.com) started their

Uptown October '17

Pulse UP CLOSE project with two questions: Is your home making you healthier? Is your home improving your lifestyle? The answer for most people is no – your house isn’t making you healthier or improving your lifestyle. “Almost every structure in our desert struggles daily with our climate and the inhabitants pay the price in terms of uncomfortable summertime temps, closed blinds in the summer, hot rooms and cold rooms, roaring AC, unhealthy interior air quality, and inordinately large consumption footprints,” explains Bell, VALI Homes partner and marketing/sales “clarity master.” The Phoenix-based rethinker of residential real estate uses a patent-pending, intelligent building envelope, inspired by European-derived Passive House concepts, and a fresh approach to the community to build homes and neighborhoods that are healthy for both people and the environment that surrounds them. They are the first, and only, to achieve Passive Houselevel performance in Arizona’s climate zone. VALI Homes consume one-fifth of the resources of similarly sized houses while maximizing interior comfort, are designed to be environmentally friendly and to bring value to their owners’ lives. The homes go beyond LEED Platinum Certification and are even more efficient than “green” homes. “For me, it’s all about the prevention,” says VALI Homes Founder and “brainchild” Trautman. “How can we prevent some of the everyday illnesses? How can we make homes work better for the residents? I started out in healthcare, but as you know, you can’t make too much progress on prevention once the patient comes to see you. I started looking into the bigger picture, and found people who shared my vision. Now, we have homes that literally make you healthier.” Traditionally, new homebuilders improve the efficiency of dated structural designs by wrapping the buildings in membranes and filling walls with foam. While these efforts reduce consumption, they also trap moisture in the walls that destroys the structures themselves, deteriorates interior air quality and can harm residents’ health. With marginal increases in efficiency, attempts to offset these homes’ consumption still require relatively large rooftop solar systems with a lengthy breakeven timeline. “Phoenix has this ‘green lab for suburbia’ feeling,” explains Salengar, VALI Homes architect. “What we are doing here is going to change the landscape of homes – for the better. We are using this amazing climate to create amazing homes.” Trautman, with partners Salenger and Bell, found their solution in native Sonoran plants. “We took the Passive House standard and created our own interpretation — the VALI system (which we also refer to as “next-generation protective shells”)

18

Uptown October '17

— that’s inspired by the self-shading principles of the Saguaro (biomimicry) to create a home that’s perfectly in balance with our often-harsh climate,” Bell says. Through these next-gen protective shells, airtight envelopes, super-insulated walls, and 24/7 fresh-air purification, VALI homes consume 80 percent less energy than similarly sized houses. Each home consumes so little energy, they are beyond net-zero efficiency energy use — meaning they have zero net energy consumption or create more than they consume on an annualized basis — using minimal solar systems and battery technology. “The best thing about this house, is you don’t have to sacrifice anything in the summer,” Bell explains. “You can keep the AC as cold as you would like, and your bills will be nowhere near what you currently pay. This house will literally pay for itself in durability and efficiency – and in health.” So, can your current house do that? To experience these homes, the team is opening Ocotillo Mews, the first true eco desert community. In perfect balance with the Sonoran Desert, the villas on Ocotillo Mews are ideal sanctuaries for an active, mindful Phoenix lifestyle, embracing VALI Homes’ ideals it was built upon.

ART LIVES HERE

Shonna James’ journey to Shemer Art Center & Museum

BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

Shonna James has had quite the professional journey. She’s a public relations (PR) guru turned business owner turned arts advocate. James traded the Rocky Mountains for the Sonoran Desert in 1983. She attended Arizona State University, earning her degree in business administration. Her career in PR began at Del Webb Corporation, a residential developer that specializes in retirement communities. James worked with national media, sponsored and attended a handful of events and volunteered in the community. Her responsibilities stretched locally and nationally. “After working with so many PR and advertising agencies, I decided to start my own,” she says. And just like that, Shonna James Communications emerged. James spearheaded her company for nearly 18 years, working with various clients and being a part of events like Komen Race for the Cure, Festival of the West, Oscar Night America and many others. She fostered relationships with inspiring community leaders and authors throughout the years. “Like any business owner, I enjoyed the opportunity to create my own business and do business the way I thought it should be done,” James explains. In 2015, James went from entrepreneur (without losing that entrepreneurial spirit) to executive director of Shemer Art Center & Museum, www.shemerartcenter.org. “In a lot of respects my current role is very similar to running a creative business.” She continues, “I am using my background in marketing, media and community relations and adding to that all the experiences I have gained working with numerous corporations, agencies, nonprofits, celebrities and community leaders and artists.” Shemer nurtures creativity and imagination through art. As executive director of the space, James uses her wealth of experiences in creative business to introduce visitors to the nonprofit through fun and engaging events, including Wine & Watercolor, Furry Friends Fine Art Festival and new classes and workshops for people of all ages. “I enjoy learning from our students and instructors and in the future, I look forward to sitting in on some of our classes and weekend workshops,” James says.

IF THE CROWN FITS Josephine Alcazar: the queen of catering and cars

BY KELLY POTTS / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

Josephine Alcazar has worn many hats – or shall we say crowns – in her life. The philanthropist is the co-owner of Russo and Steele collector automobile auction company, the self-proclaimed Queen of Catering and, her personal favorite, a grandma. The culinary veteran had her own catering company, Events With Taste, for 10 years, from 1996 to 2003. She has also been in the restaurant and event planning business. “I truly enjoyed the catering business – meeting new partners, hosting events that make differences to people. That’s what it all comes down to,” she explains. Alcazar has used her connections she’s made throughout her career to make a positive impact in the community, chairing several philanthropic events in the Valley, including those for the Phoenix Zoo and Ballet Arizona. It is with her event and catering background, along with her philanthropic bone, that she knew she could do even more. She teamed up with her husband, Drew, to create the Russo and Steele Automobile Car Auction, now coming up on its 18th year. Together, they set out to carve their place in the world of collector automobile auctions by giving the community a unique, boutique style auction as an alternative in a world of ordinary auctions. “One year, my dad even made cannoli for everyone [at the auction]! To this day, someone will still ask for a cannoli. That is the feeling and spirit I love that we have created.” Alcazar’s role in the company has grown throughout the years and she now runs the sponsorship, promotions, charity, and event logistics for Russo and Steele. But most of all, Alcazar says she loves seeing her Phoenician roots passed on to her five grandchildren. “My grandkids are the light of my life,” she elaborates. “I love that they are having the same experiences I did, going to the same schools that I did. The roots of Phoenix, and the roots of my family, that’s what I love the most.”

Pulse HIS STYLE

FEELING GOOD Arin Lopez balances ease with risk

BY BRE KRAGER / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

When it comes to clothes, Arin Lopez has one sound piece of advice: choose outfits that “feel good.” “Even though I think my style is laidback, I do enjoy taking the occasional style risk,” says Lopez, director of volunteer services for Make-A-Wish Arizona. “This risk might lead to some questionable looks, but if I feel good in it, that’s all that matters to me.” Although he admits that he doesn’t have a natural talent for mixing and matching colors, his fashion sense has become more sophisticated throughout the years. One thing is for certain – he always manages to find a way to keep his outfits fun and fresh. This feel-good outlook on style is something that Lopez has begun to teach his two sons, Jordan and Carter, who he recently adopted through Child Crisis Arizona. “I enjoy dressing my kids up as much as I do myself now,” he adds. “The boys love getting compliments on their outfits. It raises their confidence, which is a pretty cool thing for two boys who’ve overcome a lot to get where they are.”

Which style rule should every man try breaking at least once? Be bolder, fellas! I think men should be less afraid of wearing bold colors, especially pants in colors other than black, blue or denim. What would we be surprised to find in your closet? A wedding dress. I wore it for a themed event and looked fabulous. It gave me a profound respect for women who have to wear them. What is your favorite accessory? A ring I wear that says “be, believe, live, love.” It has huge sentimental value to me and my belief in equality for all.

FurBabies Founder Heather Budde’s functional meets fashion-forward style

BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

Heather Budde loves two things: dogs and fashion. This past October, she opened FurBabies Resort & Spa, (www. furbabiesresort.com) a stylish pet resort and spa that gives furry friends the five-star treatment. “Our mission is to provide a welcoming atmosphere that is safe, healthy, and fun for all doggies,” she adds, “We are also working with a few rescue dog organizations to help house and prep the dogs for their fur-ever home.” In business and fashion, Budde pays close attention to detail and quality. Whether it’s an edgy shoe or the perfect pant – Budde recommends Helmut Lang skinny pants – she always goes the extra mile to complete every look. Because she works around dogs all day, Budde opts for functional and stylish pieces. You’ll often find her rocking layers like a unique jacket with a simple shirt. She also likes to take a Zara day dress and accessorize it with different jewelry, cropped jackets, and flats to get various looks. Now that the Valley is literally experiencing cooler days, Budde plans to don her seasonal go-to item: boots! “We only have a few months out of the year to wear them. Plus, it’s hard to go wrong with boots, leggings, and a comfortable sweater,” she says.

What fashion tip do you live by? If you are going to wear it, own it! Wear what you like and don’t worry about what other people may think of it. Who gives you fashion inspiration? Victoria Beckham’s style inspires me. She always looks so timeless and is a true style icon. Would you ever dress up your dogs, Lady and Bambi? Of course! I am not the type of person to “doll up” my dogs in daily outfits and tutus, but I do put them in cute dog jackets, scarves or bandanas when it is cooler out.

PASSPORT in her PAGES Local author Anita Kaltenbaugh transports readers with her travels

She’s a best-selling author in both fiction and nonfiction genres, a leading travel blogger, has her master’s degree and has a bucket list of destinations from around the world tucked in her drawer. She loves two things in life: travel and books, and she combines these two passions to make magic. Anita Kaltenbaugh, also known to the literary world as A.K. Smith, is the highly acclaimed author of A Deep Thing, a new thrilling novel filled with mystery, romance and intrigue set in Mexico, as well as Travel Secrets: Insider Guide to Planning, Affording and Taking More Vacations, a nonfiction book focused on tips for travelers. It’s her love of writing that keeps her going and now, she’s about to experience that excitement again as she approaches publishers with her newest young adult novel, Pseudocide.

“Books have always been my first love,” Kaltenbaugh admits. “Some of my favorite childhood memories are reading in my upstairs bedroom, looking out the window. Escaping to worlds far different than my small town in Western Pennsylvania fueled my desire to see the world. Travel and reading in my mind are intertwined. If you can't travel, you can visit the location in a good book.” Kaltenbaugh grew up loving movies, reading anything she could get her hands on and getting lost in the stories. She really felt the magic of words when she first read Charlotte's Web and began journaling her own characters at a very young age. She later was transported into strange new lands by Dean Koontz, Stephen King, John Grisham and Sidney Sheldon. Well-read copies of thrillers and romances could be found in every nook of her childhood home. After college, Kaltenbaugh wanted to write, but she felt being a novelist wasn't a logical career. Instead she took up employment in the corporate world, working for several universities, including local Arizona State University. With her busy life pulling her from her passion, Kaltenbaugh turned her back on the pages she loved so much until she went back to graduate school, where she fell in love with writing all over again. Her head was full of stories and she knew she needed to put them on paper. A wanderer at heart, Kaltenbaugh also thirsted for adventure in the real world. She has lived in London, Mexico, seven different U.S. states and has moved over 30 times. Now settled in the Valley of the Sun, her new goal is to step foot on every continent on earth and to share her experiences through her writing. She has written thousands of articles, blogs (www.wordstravelfilm.com) and of course her best-selling book, Travel Secrets. She admits that travel is a core component of her life and it inspires her writing, whether it is fiction or nonfiction. After she got a taste for the two, she knew that’s all she needed – to travel and write. “I met my husband while living in Mexico after I had just returned from Italy. In the next three years, we would end up taking 99 different vacations, together,” Kaltenbaugh says. “While hunting for the best deals online, and attempting to stay at luxury places for less, I started taking notes.

I stockpiled tips that would eventually become my book Travel Secrets: Insider Guide to Planning, Affording and Taking More Vacations. The second edition came out in 2017 and went on to hit No. 1 on Amazon.” Her book is chock full of useful travel tips and she never hesitates to offer destination advice to anyone that will listen. In her book, she urges readers to always seek a personal experience. She warns them that vacations don't have to be expensive, far away, or a long length of time. Taking the time to just get away for a weekend is a vacation and doing it often will help you de-stress, and experiencing something new will enrich your life. Kaltenbaugh notes that today it is easier than ever to write a book. Both technology and Amazon have made it possible for writers to find a traditional publisher or self-publish their own books. “For my fiction book, I queried publishers in my genre with query letters,” she explains. “No one seemed interested until I attended the Las Vegas Writer’s Conference. There, I pitched The Wild Rose Press and they requested my complete manuscript. You need thick skin in this industry and I was nervous to share it with anyone. It was an amazing day when they offered me that contract. “ Becoming a published author is not easy and it took Kaltenbaugh six months to write her travel book, and almost two years to write the fiction novel, A Deep Thing – which showcases Valley spots in homage to her Phoenix residence. She warns that it’s normal to get distracted and not take the time to write, so it’s incredibly important to manage your time and accomplish small goals every day. “The greatest gift my husband ever gave me was the support, encouragement and time to write,” Kaltenbaugh says. “I was teaching at The Bud Crawley Real Estate School when the founder, and close friend of mine, was killed in a car accident. After the school closed, my husband suggested I take the next year to write and finish one of my books. I know my fiction book would have never been completed without the extra time.” In addition, it took Kaltenbaugh another year and a half for the book to be released from her publisher. She warns

other writers that it takes a long time and there is nothing quick about it or the process. But, she says, it is just truly rewarding once finished. “The best thing hands down is being able to share your story with friends and strangers, alike,” Kaltenbaugh divulges. “It's amazing to have your book available in 10 countries. I’ve had beautiful reviews from places like Jamaica and Bali and I love when they take the time to tell me how much they enjoyed my characters and plotlines.” With her young adult novel nearing completion, Kaltenbaugh is enthusiastic to be at it again. The exhilaration of query letters, the flush of disappointment from rejection, and the sigh of relief when a publisher falls in love with your work. She’s excited for it all to begin again. “Writing is the way I paint my canvas,” she says. “If I can help someone escape into another world for a few hours or travel to a place they have never visited through the setting in my books, that gives me joy. Life is too short not to discover other parts of our world, so make a travel bucket list and start crossing the names off. Complete your goals, open your eyes and don’t be afraid to write about it.” Uptown October '17

This year’s event brings a French flair to the Valley with it’s theme, Monet’s Table, as well as several exciting surprises. “We are most excited to announce the return of the Neiman Marcus runway show.” exclaims Ally Ruiz, public relations and events manager for Homeward Bound. “This has been a guest favorite in the past and we are elated to bring it back!” In addition to the showcased fashions by Talbot Runhof, attendees will marvel and bid on the highlight of the event – the handbags. “With an average of over 250 handbags at our luncheon, we attempt to satisfy

every taste and style: vintage, modern, classic, sparkly and simple” To prepare for the event, supporters of Homeward Bound individually donated their handbags and department stores donated new handbags. With brands in the past ranging from Michael Kors to Chanel to Fendi to Prada and everything in between, and prices ranging from $50 to $5,000, this year will surely have a purse for every partygoer. In its 13th year, the group hopes to bring a whopping 550 women to the Arizona Biltmore. What keeps more and more shoppers coming back each year? “Without a doubt, the guests at this event are very passionate about supporting their community,” Ruiz says. “They are advocates for empowerment and have created their own movement of women helping

women by bringing their friends, sisters and other women in their life for a great cause. And of course, who doesn’t love a fabulous handbag? Philanthropy never goes out of style!” Homeward Bound’s mission is to change the lives of homeless families through the philanthropy’s comprehensive program and two generational approach. “We really want to create a space for women helping women with this event,” Ruiz explains. “The guests at Old Bags Luncheon are often mothers, grandmothers, sisters, best friends and colleagues that support each other in life’s most challenging and exciting moments. We are fortunate to have these women share their support with the women in the community that need it the most.”

PRAISE FOR PHILANTHROPISTS

The Association of Fundraising Professionals celebrates those who give back

National Philanthropy Day brings together Arizona’s nonprofit fundraising professionals to recognize leaders and contributors who drive charitable giving in our community and to learn next practices from the industry’s experts. Hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ (AFP) Greater Phoenix Chapter, this 33rd annual celebration will honor individuals and organizations in Phoenix who are helping lead this marked expansion of charitable giving. This year, in addition to the five leadership awards recipients, 21 local nonprofits will be honoring their supporters with the Spirit of Philanthropy award. Approximately 450-500 people will gather to enjoy the luncheon and celebrate local philanthropists and charities who have impacted the community through their contributions. Jason Lee, general counsel for AFP, and Adrian Sargeant will be the keynote speakers of the program, with Ray Schey, publisher of the Phoenix Business Journal, emceeing the event. So, how exactly does an organization or individual become a recipient? Open nominations are accepted each year from members of the AFP Greater Phoenix chapter and chapter member organizations may submit one per category. There is a formal process on the AFP website and an application form as well. “The luncheon committee asks third party judges – generally past recipients, local foundations and local corporate philanthropists to read the nominations,” Adele Dietrich, certified fundraising executive and AFP Greater Phoenix president, explains. “This selection committee chooses the winners and reports this back to the luncheon committee. In addition to the five categories of leadership awards, local nonprofits have another avenue to honor their supporters through the Spirit of

Philanthropy award process.” Although the luncheon seems like the main event, the day sessions prior to the awards ceremony also have a big meaning to the community. Adrian Sargeant will present two sessions during the Philanthropy Day event: “Building Donor Loyalty” and “Massive Fundraising.” Sargeant holds a Chair in Fundraising at Plymouth University and was formerly the first Hartsook Chair in Fundraising at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University. “Both sessions will draw on 25 years of research within the charity sector, exploring donor retention, innovations in building donor loyalty, characteristics of high performing fundraising leaders and the power of systems thinking within the nonprofit industry,” Dietrich says.

VODKA VARIETALS

Sip your way through select places pouring up Belvedere’s exclusive new spirits

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Good vodka tastes like almost nothing at all, or does it? This past summer, Belvedere Vodka hosted several mixologists, spirit experts and bartenders from across the globe – including a select few from the Valley – to show tastemakers that there can be a discernable difference and nuance of flavor in their highend vodkas based on region, minerality and soils. “Belvedere began working with one of its farms in Bartezek Lake in northeastern Poland and one in Smogóry Forest, which is in far western Poland, to harvest the exact same type of rye at the exact same time,” says Lindsey Casey, a local spirit specialist with Breakthru Beverage who took part in the summer field trip. “It’s a rare Diamond Dankowski rye usually reserved for their ultra-premium Unfiltered Belvedere. They would mix the harvested rye from each region with the same type of yeast and take it through the same process – yet the final product tasted starkly different to each of us.” The brand successfully showed that, like with grapes and wine, the terroir where the key ingredient of rye is grown is able to shine through the distillation process with its own flavor profile and unique characteristics. “Vodka-making in Poland dates back more than 600 years,” Casey says. “If anyone knows craftsmanship when it comes to this spirit, it’s them. And, starting this month, you don’t have to take my word for it, or theirs. You can try it for yourself.” How? Belvedere has chosen Arizona as well as Colorado and Washington, D.C. as launch sites for both single estate rye varietals of the vodka, each named in homage to the villages where the rye was harvested.

Nose: Bright and fragrant with notes of freshcut rye grain, grass and a hint of almond. Palate: Medium-bodied and delicate with notes of spearmint, fresh hay and a hint of biscuit. Finish: Clean and crisp with persistent notes of menthol, fresh grass and rye bread. Belvedere Smogóry Forest Overall: Bold and savory, bringing out the rich flavors of rye and perfect for robust cocktails with complex flavors. Nose: Intense aromas of sea air, toasted rye bread and caramel. Palate: Rich and mellow with initial impressions of salted caramel, cereal and a touch of honey. Mouth-feel is rich, well-rounded and luscious. Finish: Notes of baked bread, sea salt and caramel. THEin BESTthe Biz Why so many women, including celebrities in the entertainment and fitness industries, are becoming National Hair Loss devotees.

I

t’s an indisputable fact: women want beautiful hair. Throughout history, we’ve been obsessed with making it that way. Unfortunately, another fact is that the majority of women will face some sort of hair loss in their lifetime, and that presents a definite challenge in our quest for a lush, gorgeous ‘do. Female hair loss occurs for an astonishing variety of very common reasons. We can shed our strands post-pregnancy, when we’re stressed out or eating an unbalanced diet, or after surgery or weight loss – but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hormones, medications, illnesses, and genetics can all play a role in diminishing our “crowning glory.” It’s a problem that doesn’t escape many women, even those in the high-profile entertainment and fitness industries. And when you live your life under the sharp gaze of the public eye, always expected to look your best, having less-than-luscious locks can hit especially hard. Enter National Hair Loss, a company that is fast becoming a favorite of its clientele – women and men, celebs and non-celebs alike – because of the unprecedented results people are achieving. The name pops up more and more frequently in outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter and Women’s Health Magazine, as those whose hair is a professional asset entrust National Hair Loss to preserve and maintain it. One such celebrity is Letitia Frye – a renowned motivational speaker and “Auctiontainer” who has helped raise over $200 million for charity alongside A-list stars. Her lifelong commitment to helping others, along with her endurance of two unspeakable tragedies, gave way to her unique and engaging speaking career. An avid runner all her life, Letitia was struck by a car while jogging, which left her with a severe concussion and traumatic brain

injury. Previous thyroid-related hair loss issues had led Letitia to seek help from National Hair Loss, and she sought them out within ten days of her accident to help with the trauma to her scalp. Within a few months, her hair was back and healthier than ever thanks to the interventions of the National Hair Loss team. When you demand a crowd’s attention and all eyes are on you, you want to feel your best … and now, Letitia does. National Hair Loss’s popularity is due to a combination of factors – for starters, it’s staffed by people who have firsthand experience with hair loss, either their own or a loved one’s. This lends to the supportive and understanding atmosphere so crucial for client success. They understand, perhaps better than most, that there are nearlyinnumerable reasons for hair loss, and that it requires much more than a one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why each client receives a comprehensive workup using cutting-edge technologies, and a program is specifically tailored to target their unique issues. “Through a hair analysis, we can learn about a lot of things, including nutritional deficiencies, concentrations of certain metals, and food intolerances,” says Carly Klein, founder of National Hair Loss, who makes it her personal mission to stay on top of the latest in hair therapies. When we start noticing thin patches or a drain full of clumps, it’s alarming at best, especially since we’re rarely sure why it’s happening. “Women don’t realize that some of the normal things they do can harm their hair,” Carly states. For example, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – a common treatment that, ironically, helps women feel and look younger and rejuvenated – can lead to

hair loss. But according to Carly, National Hair Loss can stabilize the hair so that there isn’t an issue, letting women reap the benefits of their HRT worry-free. “Lots of women, even those in the spotlight, struggle with hair loss,” she says. “But we’re masters at what we do.” And whether it’s genetics or medication or diet or another reason altogether, National Hair Loss has the perfect solution

to preserve and protect each precious strand. Watch for our upcoming series highlighting the personal hair loss challenges of several of your favorite local celebs!

Who said nighttime (or daytime) fun has to stop in your 30s? If you’re 40-plus – or even if you’re not and are simply looking for a more elevated outing – we’ve got you covered with plenty of Valley hot spots that cater to those with discerning taste. From sports bars to craft cocktail haunts to resort hangouts, find your next place for a refined rendezvous here.

Blue Martini

Overlooking the gardens of the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall, AZ88 is a contemporary haven of cocktail and culinary delights; in fact, it dubs itself a “modern-day saloon.” Famous for its ever-changing art installations, the venue is the place to get martinis and is a favorite for elevated American classics such as the grilled cheese (add bacon!) and the eponymous chicken sandwich. www.az88.com.

At this trendy, upscale lounge, you’ll find more than 42 signature martinis, craft cocktails, wines and spirits plus light bites. The red- and blue-lit atmosphere lends a seductive vibe across the venue’s three different areas, and there’s always a rotating list of live entertainment. The popular happy hour, from 4 to 7 p.m. daily, includes complimentary martini tastings. www.phoenix.bluemartinilounge.com. PHOTO BY GARY HELLAND

With deep roots in the community (the spot was opened by a fifth generation born-and-raised Phoenician), Central Wine encourages involvement with its monthly wine club, wine tastings and classes. www.centralwinephx.com.

Located in Old Town Scottsdale, this lively cigar bar offers a sophisticated reprieve from the area’s usual scene. The interior charms with custom leather chairs, high tops and bar seating for enjoying a generous selection of fine cigars, 14 rotating taps and more than 400 premium spirits, including over 100 whiskies and bourbons and 100-plus scotches. The 34 TVs don’t hurt either. www.foxcigarbar.com.

CAN’T-MISS COCKTAIL: The mix-n-match wine flight (regularly $22; $20 during happy hour Tuesday through Saturday from open to 6 p.m.) is a must-try, with three half-glasses of your choice.

Kazimierz World Wine Bar

The Little Woody

Tucked away in Old Town Scottsdale, Kazimierz sweeps patrons into an Old World-style wine bar reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy – first, with its unmarked door and then, with its dim lighting and cozy seating. The 2,000-bottle wine list (and the full bar) is complemented by worldly tapas. And nightly, starting at 9 p.m., the intimate space pulses with live music. www.kazbar.net.

This hush-hush, lounge-like bar sits in the center of Arcadia with no signage, but a lot of local regulars. With an impressive selection of whiskey and scotch (and a createyour-own whiskey flight), the dark neighborhood bar feels reminiscent of a hidden lodge, filled with live entertainment, bar bites, pool tables in the basement-inspired den, and a multitude of old-school games. www.littlewoodyaz.com.

Luxe HAUTE PROPERTY

SPOTLIGHT: AN INVITING ABODE

Uptown October '17

There are many modern ranch-style homes in Arcadia, but not all of them are as unique as this one that sits on Calle Del Medio. While it has all of the “must-haves” many buyers look for in a home in the heart of this highly sought-after neighborhood – sweeping views of Camelback Mountain, extraordinary design, tons of entertaining space and top-of-the-line finishes – this dwelling also has much more. Once you get past the first view of the extensive front lawn and entertaining porch, you’ll notice the cabin-like feel of the architecture and thoughtful design. Stone accents and wooden beams invite you into the home, which is equipped with soaring wood ceilings, open, entertainment-ready spaces and unique touches. Some of the upscale finishes throughout the space include custom built-in cabinetry in every room, imported hand-painted tile, soapstone and exotic wood counter tops, vaulted wood-plank beam ceilings, multiple fireplaces, and wide-plank hardwood floors. Quite possibly the most awe-inspiring feature is the large stone fireplace and two antler chandeliers, which serve as the centerpiece of the entire open concept great room. The great room space contains a living room, dining area and kitchen, housing a French Lacanche Volnay range with an artisan crafted metal range hood, statement backsplash, a built-in cabinet-covered refrigerator and large island. The two-story property totals in 9,135 square feet, including the main house, open finished basement and studio/guest house. The main house contains six bedrooms and five ½ bathrooms. Some standout rooms include the stately library, the upstairs loft, and the picture-perfect laundry room. WHEELS

2018 LEXUS LS Drive as though you’re flying first class BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: 2018 Lexus LS

Luxury carmakers always have one flagship vehicle. Most often it is their biggest sedan, one that radiates the essence of excellence, with the presence of pure luxury. For Lexus, that vehicle is the LS sedan, originally launched 28 years ago. For its fifth generation, Lexus has perfected the car, and it is nothing short of exceptional. The 2018 LS is rear-wheel drive, with available all-wheel drive, and will also be offered in a hybrid variant when it goes on sale in February 2018. It is powered by an all-new, twin-turbo, 3.5liter V-6 engine with 416 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, and gets from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. A new 10-speed transmission is standard. The new LS has a lower, ground-hugging appearance and a striking coupe-like silhouette with a six-window profile. Luxury audiences have a measured preference for big grilles, and the LS doesn’t disappoint. A unique rendition of the massive spindle grille is flanked by narrow slit-like projector lamps and L-shaped LEDs. It’s the most sharply angled and edgy vehicle in its class. The effects of the new, longer wheelbase really show up inside, with massive passenger

room and comfort. Surprisingly, the best seat in the new LS is in back – it’s like flying first class. Executive seats heat, cool, massage, recline and include a raised ottoman. There are also 11.6-inch entertainment screens, a Mark Levinson 3-D audio system, and ambient lighting. Several individually handcrafted Shimamoku wood patterns are available in a choice of matte or gloss and light or dark. It is unquestionably a showy, almost arrogant, display of luxury automotive craftsmanship. For those who want more, Lexus offers an F Sport package with dynamic handling, active stabilizers, sport-tuned suspension, and air height adjustment to lower the vehicle’s profile for improved dynamics at highway speeds. As expected, the LS is one of the world’s most technologically advanced automobiles. Among other things, it provides world-class safety technology with the Lexus Safety System+. So, what’s it like to drive? It’s certainly quick enough; even with the V-6, drivers won’t be disappointed with its performance and handling. With expressive new styling, state-of-the-art technology, and new imposing length, Lexus promises a “new level of flagship luxury in every aspect.”

Why order the typical bacon and eggs at breakfast when the Valley is known for its Southwest foods? The Smith’s made-from-scratch green chilli bowl ($14) reminds Phoenicians why our flavors are so unique. Slow-cooked pork combines with a housemade green chili (which is made of poblano and Anaheim chilis, jalapenos, roasted onions, tomatillos and cilantro), and is topped with cotija cheese, red peppers, cilantro and served with a locally made tortilla on the side. A new twist on an old classic, the dish is served up in a cast-iron skillet, ready to be devoured. 3701 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; 602.956.0908; www.3onsmithcafe.com.

SLOW & STEADY An infused teapot treat

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH BARRY

Last month, The Camby launched a modern twist on traditional high tea. Dubbed “Tipsy Tea Parties,” the lively events take place every Friday and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the resort’s The Bees Knees venue. “Each quirky service features a prix fixe menu of sweet and savory bites for one’s party to share as well as each guest’s choice of a spiked tea – with both hot and cold options – served in its own funky teapot,” explains Brian Blevins, lead mixologist at The Camby and architect of the spiked tea menu. One clear cool-weather favorite is The Slow & Steady. “We start by adding boiling hot water and caffeine-free chamomile citron tea to our teapot, which needs to steep about five minutes to bring out its full flavor,” Blevins says. “While it’s steeping, we combine both Grand Marnier and China-China liqueurs in the pot as well.” Both the cognac-infused Grand Marnier and the rich, orange flavor in the ChinaChina – which also has hints of cardamom and spice – naturally enhance the fragrance and floral elements in the tea. “We then add fresh lemon juice to bring out the citrus notes and brown sugar simple syrup we make in-house with local honey to play up the sweeter flavors,” Blevins explains. The result is warm and rich, without weighing guests down as some fall and winter cocktails tend to do. Each teapot has two servings. Pots are poured tableside into whimsical tea cups and ready-made for photo opps. Tipsy tea is $40 per person, inclusive of sweet and savory bites and one spiked teapot per guest. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Brendan Ayers, senior executive chef at The Henry

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

Chef Brendan Ayers focuses on developing recipes and cooking simple yet hearty dishes ranging from handmade pastas to truly great steaks and fish. So, you are a locally grown culinary success story? Practically – our family moved to Scottsdale from California when I was in third grade. I graduated from Horizon High School – go Huskies! – in 1999. Did you always plan on being a chef? I initially studied architecture at Arizona State University – math always came easy to me. However, sitting still at a drafting table all day did not. I always worked part time in restaurants, but really got the bug after cooking a special dinner for my family. Their shock and awe it brought – and resulting support – changed the course of my life. If you weren’t a chef, you’d probably be: In real estate. What was your big break? After leaving ASU for a specialized culinary program at Scottsdale Community College, I had some great opportunities, but the biggest early on was earning a spot as sous chef at Tarbell’s back in 2004, followed by a position with the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa. Then, of course, joining the Fox Restaurant Concept (FRC) family in 2010. One can’t-miss dish from The Henry’s new fall menu: Don’t miss the roasted pork loin ($24) with apple sage stuffing, wilted spinach and drip pan squash. Tell us a non-culinary fact readers would be surprised to know about you: I can play the drums. I also love to golf and “zen out” with my son as he trains in taekwondo. What food is your guilty pleasure? As funny as it sounds, I love me some Haribo gummy bears. The Henry, 4455 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.429.8020; www.foxrc.com.

CONSCIOUS EATING ProteinHouse opens a second Valley location

BY GABBY RICHMAN

Last month, ProteinHouse opened its second Valley location in the Arcadia area, with the first located in North Scottsdale. Started in 2012 with healthy eating in mind, the franchise brings a fast-casual option to the area, focusing on nutritious, all-natural, quality recipes that promote both physical and mental wellness. “There are several fitness locations around, [and] our weather provides great outdoor activities, but there are not many healthy eating choices,” explains Tim Johnson, owner of ProteinHouse. “We want to nurture and support those who strive for a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle.” ProteinHouse, complete with a contemporary design using simple decor, supports those on their health quests by using clean, fresh, unprocessed, non-GMO ingredients. All of the fish served is also wild-caught and each dish is made-to-order. Forgo the weekly meal prep this Sunday and head into Protein House to achieve the

same goal without the long grocery shopping and hours in the kitchen to prepare and cook. “We saw a need and wanted to help other fitness-minded people with their daily struggles to eat clean,” Johnson says of his reasoning to bring ProteinHouse to the area. “When it comes to keeping fit, living a healthy life, or building your best physique, exercise is only half the battle, you must eat the correct foods.” While many times clean eating can be associated with bland flavors, ProteinHouse strives to defy the norm, focusing on great taste. The restaurant offers a full menu of breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and beverage options, including protein shakes and cold pressed juices. Some highlights include the best-selling Sexy Bowl – complete with grilled salmon, broccoli, tomatoes, red peppers, mushrooms, red onions, asparagus, squash, avocado and spinach – as well as the array of mouth-watering protein pancakes and high-protein burgers. “We offer a menu designed with the professional athlete/fitness lifestyle in mind as well as a ‘build your own’ option. We only use the finest and most unique selection of ingredients, blended with an acute sense of preparation and presentation every time.” ProteinHouse is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Located at 3141 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; 602.354.5400; www.proteinhouse.com.
