City obvious CCP target
Dear Editor,
Re: “Keep election integrity,” Letters, March 2
I am not a psychologist or psychiatrist so I can only guess at the reasons why some people have a desire to control the lives and impose their beliefs and agendas on other people (despots, dictators, totalitarian regimes, fascists, religious fanatics, etc )
But I suspect that issues such as negative childhood experiences, low I Q s, fear, alienation and ressentiment (repressed feelings of envy and hatred towards those who know more than they do) play a role in making the idea of having power over other people attractive to them
Given Richmond’s demographics, the CCP’s goal of gaining as much control of the world’s political systems and economies as possible, and the open travel between Canada and China, it seems reasonable to assume that the CCP would view Richmond as a viable staging area for attending to the agenda of exerting influence over Richmond’s and Canada’s political, economic,
development and educational systems and processes
In light of the growing evidence of the existence of CCP “police stations” in Canada (Richmond included), and their ongoing interference in Canada’s municipal, provincial and federal governmental affairs (CSIS and Australian Intelligence reports), we in Richmond should ask what, if anything, would happen to any of our council and/or school board members if it was found that they were beneficiaries of financial support from and/or had direct connections with the CCP party
Would there be consequences for such affiliations or would we simply resign ourselves to such things being part of our impotent acquiescence to being manipulated like an inconsequential country of 35 million that is powerless to do anything to protect itself from a totalitarian society of one billion, 350 million people?
It would be safe to assume that the CCP views the situation, and us, in that light

Time to pause bike lane
Dear Editor,
Re: “Steveston bike lane cost jumps a couple million to $11 5 million,” Richmond-News com, Feb 27
My god, where are you going to find three metres to put a separated bike lane on Steveston Highway?
You have homes, a firehall, farms, a Buddhist temple, a school, a golf course
The city needs to first deal with the speed of all traffic on Steveston Highway 50 km on this roadway is a mere suggestion
The RCMP could set up on that road-
Dear Editor,
Re: “Five books challenged at library,” Community, March 2
I was dismayed to read about attempts to ban books at Richmond Public Library.
As a retired librarian (albeit school, which has a bit of a different mandate), I believe a public library should have something that could, should or would offend everyone/anyone It is a reposi-
way 24 hours a day and the fines alone would help fund many road projects.
Why is it after several bids come in way over budget that the city can’t use their own crews to build this pathway or were they one of the high bidders?
With costs rising, there is only so much money you can squeeze from the taxpayer, TransLink and various governments
Time to hit the pause button and use other already-built bike lanes

Province allows 150 acres out of ALR Lansdowne partners with Bosa Properties
Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS
“Dumbfounded” was how Mayor Malcolm Brodie described how he felt after hearing the province decided to remove a significant chunk of farmland in east Richmond from the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR).
Last year, city council unanimously voted against an application by Ecowaste to pull the 150-acre property out of the ALR in order to build several recycling facilities
However, the province decided by an order in council to allow the parcel which has been used as a construction demolition landfill for more than 50 years to be
removed from the ALR
“I’m absolutely dumbfounded that a government that prides itself on the preservation of agricultural land can do this and I don’t understand it,” Brodie said
City council asked its staff to analyze the decision and come back to them with options on how to proceed
With the landfill getting close to capacity and just a few facilities to dump construction and demolition waste in southern B C , Ecowaste is pleased with the decision
“We’re super excited we see life beyond 2025,” Christian Dietrich, Ecowaste’s vicepresident of recycling and waste services, told the Richmond News
He noted they would have had to shut down the landfill in two years if this decision hadn’t come through
This order in council, however, sidesteps the Agricultural Land Commission’s (ALC) decision-making process and city council’s ability to stop the application, although, according to the provincial announcement, the ALC was consulted and agreed with the decision
Coun Laura Gillanders questioned whether other properties in the ALR are now “vulnerable ”
Coun Carol Day suggested the city file a freedom-of-information request to see who spoke to the ALC on this matter
The owner of Lansdowne Shopping Centre announced it’s partnering with Bosa Properties to redevelop its 50acre property on No. 3 Road. But shovels probably won’t be in the ground for another two years.
Vanprop, which owns the 1970s covered mall, announced the partnership last week, just a couple weeks after submitting an application for the first development phase to the City of Richmond.
They hope to have it before city council in the early fall and to start building in March 2025.
This portion of the development consists of three towers of residential and a few retail shops.
They are proposing 1,075 residential units, including 150 affordable rental units and 150 market rental units.
With a change to the Official Community Plan (OCP) approved a couple years ago, Vanprop could eventually build about 4,000 homes at the current mall site and rebuild its retail offerings.
The plan is for the current shopping centre to be eventually demolished and retail would be offered at street level rather than in an enclosed mall. The submitted application consists of about three-quarters of the first phase development out of seven planned phases, explained Vanprop CEO Kevin Hoffman.
“It’s a significant amount of development to do at one time,” Hoffman said.

City spent $77,000 on new locks at new Minoru Centre
Maria Rantanen
The City of Richmond spent almost $500,000 in 2022 on upgrades to the aquatic centre at Minoru Centre for Active Living that’s been open for about two and a half years.
This included $77,000 to replace locks in the changing rooms, which weren’t functioning properly because of moisture and the “chlorinated environment” in the changing rooms
The changing rooms were designed as an open concept to reduce theft, however, this allowed humidity to then enter those areas
And because replacement parts were no longer available for the lock, they had to all be replaced, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams
Furthermore, about a year ago, the dehumidification coils at the aquatic centre
froze and burst during a particularly cold spell of weather, so the city had to spend almost $150,000 to replace them
In other upgrades, the city installed window film at the centre, at a cost of $84,000, to reduce glare on bright days to better allow lifeguards to see swimmers
Added to these capital costs at the centre was $164,000 for a three-year contract for the delivery of CO2 and storage tanks
Other big-ticket items in 2022 listed in the city’s financial documents include the Richmond Ice Centre, off No. 6 Road, the Minoru Lakes project and repairs to the Richmond Provincial Courthouse
The contract with Wilco Civil Inc last year to rehabilitate the Minoru Lakes was worth about $8 5 million
More than $9 million was paid to PCL Constructors Westcoast on infrastructure renewals at the Richmond Ice Centre, done in two phases
An early morning collision on Highway 91 eastbound in Richmond left one vehicle in a ditch on Sunday Richmond RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision just before the Nelson Road exit shortly after 1 a m on March 5 No injuries were reported Police are saying alcohol is being considered a factor in the ongoing investigation
Ikea looking to expand
Richmond Ikea is looking to expand its store on Jacombs Road by 50 per cent.
The city has received a development application from Ikea to expand its e-commerce, parcel, home delivery and other “click and collect” services
The proposal is to expand the building on the south side, adding a two-storey
15,800-square-metre extension, a city spokesperson confirmed. This is about 170,000 square feet the current building is about 334,000 square feet
An Ikea spokesperson said the store wants to become more “accessible, affordable and sustainable ”

Steveston bike lane paused
Richmond city council pressed pause on an $11.5 million bike lane project on Steveston Highway to see whether Williams Road would be a better location.
This was after questions were raised by the public and city councillors about the air quality on Steveston Highway
Mayor Malcolm Brodie suggested asking city staff to look at the feasibility of Williams Road compared to Steveston Highway, and the item was paused for now
The question remains whether the $5 million in TransLink funding for the project could be used on Williams Road, something city staff will look into.
Coun. Alexa Loo, while supporting the referral to look at Williams Road, said she was still in favour of a bike lane on Steveston Highway, noting the speed zone is the same on both roads.
“You want to get people out of cars, this is how you do it,” she said.
Coun. Michael Wolfe, however, voted against referring the item back to staff, saying the proposed bike lane was “bold” and shouldn’t be delayed.
The three-metre-wide separated bike lane was proposed on the south side of Steveston Highway from No. 2 Road to Shell Road.

More flags at city hall
It looks like the City of Richmond will fly a Pride flag and a Truth and Reconciliation flag annually
This was the unanimous opinion of Richmond city council at its committee meeting Monday
Last year, members of the public took city council to task for not flying these flags and subsequently the policy was reviewed.
Furthermore, after a suggestion from Mayor Mal-
colm Brodie, city council voted to have a second flag pole installed on No. 3 Road
The Ukrainian flag is currently flying at city hall in solidarity with that country which is at war with Russia. Brodie said he doesn’t anticipate that flag will come down any time soon.
The policy will come back later for a final vote.

Who’s that ‘sports announcer ’ guy?
doing voice-overs for TV and the movies.
To customers in his Richmond store, he’s known as the “sports announcer guy,” to his colleagues, he’s just “Brandon.”
Suffice to say, Brandon White a cashier at the Rona store on Elmbridge Way has caught the attention of quite a few people with his deep, booming voice when using the PA system.
Whether it’s store-closing announcements or SKU checks, White’s PA style has become so popular that some customers have taken to social media to talk about it and ask who he is.
One such thread on Reddit, titled “Rona store voice guy,” has one admirer referring to White’s “super exaggerated tones.”
Replies to the post talk of the cashier’s “hilarious” announcements and even one person who says he goes out of his way to be served by White.
The Richmond News caught up with the “Rona store voice guy” this week
and asked where his entertaining tones came from.
“To be honest, I’m just trying to make it sound loud and clear,” said White, 33, who has been working at the store for six years.
“I’ve been to many other stores where this announcement comes on and I’ve no clue what they’re saying.
“It’s not a conscious decision to sound like a sports announcer or anything.”
In fact, when he first started using the PA system a few years ago, White said the words were coming
out with weird, unintentional accents.
“I’m really not sure why I think I was just trying different voices and (the accents) would just slip out.
“It was kind of British, I think, and people would then ask, ‘oh, where are you from.’ I was like, ‘Vancouver.’
“They thought I was from South Africa or Britain or Australia.”
White said he’s aware that some customers enjoy his PA style, with many suggesting he should be working on the radio or

“I just want to be kind to all my friends and help them I just want to be a good person, ” she said
Another winner, DeBeck elementary’s Mikaela Preysler, Grade 4, advocates for others to do the right thing and makes sure her classmates don’t feel left out
Meanwhile, Whiteside elementary’s Kyah Gale-Neal, Grade 7, is kind to both her peers and adults and has taken on many leadership roles including lunch monitor, morning announcements and helping out at assemblies
All three played an important part in helping their peers feel safe and included, according to the award organizers Grade 11 and 12 students at Hugh Boyd’s social justice class
The Hugh Boyd students created the awards to celebrate young girls for doing the right thing and to encourage them to keep doing the same It was named after Kristen Visbal’s Fearless Girl sculpture
“Often, women and girls are undermined for their actions
so, by rewarding them, it makes them feel recognized,” said Jasmine Dulay, a Grade 11 student who was part of the selection committee
“I saw this first-hand when delivering the award to (Isabelle), the smile on her face when she heard the news was unmatched ”
The recipients of the award were selected by the social justice class’ selection committee from dozens of nominations from students, parents and teachers
“My students kind of felt like it was almost like a college admission Like it was kind of cool for them, but they felt the weight of those decisions, too,” said teacher Michael Taylor
He added the experience was “really rewarding” for his students as well
“They got to get a sense for the kids that they were reading about, and they sort of started to feel connected to them,” said Taylor “So when they dropped off the awards, their spirits were lifted, too ”
Last week, the three winners got a trophy, a certificate and $100 for a pizza party lunch with their classmates
The initiative is part of the class’ Lift Project that aims to recognize members of the community who have been adversely affected by the pandemic
