A group of students from 8th grade decided to meet after school to have extra practice for the school’s sports tournament. They met at a park close to school. The P.E. teacher, Mr. Bishop, was there with them.

Hey, guys! It’s time to start. Come closer. I’m going to give you instructions.

■ Do you usually exercise? If so, where? ■ Why is it good to exercise?

Look who’s coming!

Listen carefully. First, we’ll stretch. Then we’ll start with the running practice.

Funny! This is the first time he has come. He said he didn’t need extra practice!

Strange! Why did he change his mind? I have no idea.

Read the interview.

Reporter: Hello, everyone. Today I have the honor to be with the most famous Brazilian gymnast: Daiane dos Santos. Welcome. Thanks for coming! Daiane:

Thanks for the invitation. It’s very nice to be here.

Reporter: Tell us about the changes in your life. How was your life before you started practicing sports? Daiane:

Things really changed a lot. I started practicing gymnastics when I was 11. I used to practice at a club near my house. While my friends were playing, I was practicing. Then I was invited to practice at another club and I had to move to Curitiba, without my family. It was pretty hard because we’re very close and I missed them a lot. Nowadays I practice almost every day twice a day. It takes about five to seven hours. When I have competitions, I practice every day. I also have ballet classes.

Reporter: Did your parents support you? Daiane:

All the time. Sports have always been in our family. My mother used to play handball and she also practiced track and field. My father used to play soccer.

Reporter: What are your plans for the future? Daiane:

I’m going to graduate in Physical Education after I retire from competition. (Based on: www.educacional.com.br; cade.dir.yahoo.com)

Bouncing Bouncing Back Back

Kimberley Joines used to practice snowboarding but in 2000 she broke her back jumping in the park and could never walk again. She started to take up sit-skiing and has been competing since then. She promotes her sport by motivating newly injured individuals to get involved. She is very active in her community through the Children’s Wheel Ability Camp. At home, in Edmonton, Canada, she works as an office manager of physical therapy, and is a business student at the University of Alberta. Although Curt Brinkman is in a wheel chair, he has a very successful career. He graduated in business, physiology and elementary education. After that, he decided to get a master’s degree in education leadership. Besides being a businessman, he’s also an athlete and a motivational speaker. He’s a five-time Paralympics Gold Medalist and a two-time World Marathon Record Holder. 14
