YOUNG MAN FROM SÃO PAULO OUTSKIRTS MAKES VIOLINS OUT OF USED WOOD Name: David Souza Rocha Age: 20 Occupation: luthier District: São Miguel Paulista City: São Paulo Pronunciation 32 Country: Brazil

TIP

Atente para a pronúncia da palavra country. I live in a big country.

David Souza Rocha lives in the outskirts of São Paulo.

He studies at a regular school in the evening. Every afternoon, he goes to Tide Setubal Foundation, a cultural center in São Miguel Paulista. At the Foundation, David takes a luthiery course: he learns how to make and repair some musical instruments.

David likes music and wants to be a good musician. “I have a dream,” he says. “I want to play in an orchestra at Sala São Paulo.” He points to a violin and completes, “I want to play this violin at Sala São Paulo.”

São Miguel

Sometimes, David walks around garbage sites or along the Tietê river looking for old wardrobes, old tables and boxes. He collects them and makes musical instruments out of the used wood. He works as a monitor at the Foundation and is learning how to play the violin, too.

Eating Habits: What Is Good and What Is Not

Teenagers can grow about 20% of their adult height and undergo changes so fast during adolescence that there is an increased requirement for nutrients, especially calcium and iron. Check what is essential for you.

Teens’ special nutritional requirements are: Calories: Because of the growth and their activities, teenage boys require about 2,500 to 2,800 calories a day and girls require about 2,200 a day. Teens can get these calories from lean protein, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Protein: Adolescents require 45 to 60 grams of protein every day, so that their bodies can grow and maintain muscle. Good sources of protein are: meat, fish, and dairy products. Vegetarians may need to look for other alternatives like soy based foods, beans and nuts. Calcium: Weak bones and osteoporosis are consequences of not getting enough calcium during adolescence. It is better to avoid drinking soda and other sugary beverages, because they can drain the calcium from the bones. The 1,200 mg of calcium required should come from dairy products, calcium-fortified juices and cereals, and extra calcium-rich foods, such as sesame seeds and leafy greens. Iron: Lack of iron in our body can cause anemia, fatigue, and weakness. Teen boys require about 12 mg every day, while teen girls require about 15 mg. Some foods that are rich in iron are: red meat, chicken, beans, nuts, whole grains, and some leafy greens. Based on: <http://helpguide.org>. Accessed on: April 9, 2012.

How to Say No to Junk Food Junk food definitely doesn’t contain the nutritional elements that our bodies require. On the contrary, they contain lots of chemicals that are very harmful to our bodies and can make us sick. So, if we eat less or no junk food it will help us live a better and healthier life. If no action is taken against its consumption, you can get out of shape and be unhealthy. Avoiding junk food will prevent our society from becoming obese and suffering from several diseases. Based on: <www.teenink.com>. Accessed on: April 9, 2012.
