The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. Rockville Centre, however, remains strong. It is a village full of fighters, and as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and we fully resume our lives, we are all reinvigorated and reenergized.Throughout the crisis, the Rockville Centre Herald remained steadfast in informing everyone of the impact of the pandemic, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of a village that may have struggled at times, but one that also is winning. Richner Communications, which owns the Herald, was proud to do its part, too. Richner offered thousands of businesses grants at the height of the pandemic so that the merchants — the lifeblood of the community — could carryNowon. that we have emerged from the pandemic with vaccines and medical advances in our arsenal, we are ready to charge ahead with optimism and renewed vigor. In this edition of our annual Living In Rockville Centre, we look at all that is wonderful about this lively village. A special publication of your hometown newspaper, it’s published in cooperation with the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chamber's official publication.Wehope you find this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Rockville Centre Herald 52 weeks a year. The past two years were tough for Rockville Centre, but its always-resourceful people came through once again, just as we did in Hurricane Sandy's wake in 2012. Neighbors helping neighbors. That’s what Rockville Centre is all about. And what it continues to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Everyone stepped up during this challenging time: grocery stores and other necessary retailers, community organizations, civic leaders, local officials, etc. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their selfless dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

including our excellent schools, beautifully updated parks and ball fields, our booming Recreation Center, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, and Sandel Senior Center for youth and seniors, our walkable and thriving downtown business district, and overall quality of life that is second to none. I am proud to be your Mayor and remain committed to keeping our home the desirable community it is, while striving to make it better for future generations.Rockville Centre is a highly coveted community in part because we are self-sustainable. Few communities in America enjoy their own reliable Electric and Water Department at a fraction of the cost. We have our own highly trained police force, dedicated Volunteer Fire Department and emergency personnel. Our Village employees are second to none, focusing their time on the needs and betterment of our community.

Our bustling downtown business district features top-notch restaurants, services, and charming retail shops that make Rockville Centre truly unique. Residents and visitors alike enjoy activities in our business districts throughout the year. My administration has worked diligently to bring about fiscal discipline to the operation of our Village while not impacting services. The Village of Rockville Centre recently received the highest possible bond rating from one of the top credit rating services. Standard & Poor’s (S&P) Global Ratings has affirmed Rockville Centre’s AAA rating for public improvement bonds. The exemplary rating means that the Village can secure a lower interest rate on bonds, reducing the cost to residents. We continue to be aggressive in going after major grants and gifts to benefit the Village and hold the line on taxes. During my tenure, we have secured over $40 million dollars in federal, state and local grants and gifts to make improvements in our Village.Wecontinue to improve our infrastructure throughout the Village. Our Police Department recently moved into their new headquarters at 142 Maple Avenue. We knew that while our Village continues to grow, our police headquarters needed to grow and advance with it. The new 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art station is equipped with a new communications and dispatch center, designated training space, and secured booking area. The John A. This year we celebrate the 116th anniversary of the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce. I say celebrate because our incredible village and its residents have supported our members for decades by shopping locally. Our business districts continue to not only thrive but grow as we welcome new businesses each year. Coordinating with the mayor’s office, our membership committee celebrates new businesses when they join the chamber with a ribbon cutting attended by our mayor, deputy mayor and chamber members, complete with going “live” on social media. These fun and informal videos introduce each new business and its owner to the community. Our social media presence has grown tremendously and is a wonderful resource for chamber members and village residents. I encourage you to like and follow us if you have not already done so! The first water and electric utilities building on the south side of Maple Avenue was built on land acquired by Rockville Centre from Capt. Edwin Wallace. The water service began in 1995. The electric generating plant went on line three years later. In the late 19th century, theTomWallaceCarrozza/Herald

LIVING IN ROCKVILLE CENTRE 2022-2023 15 www.liherald.com property was central to the village’s activities, and that tradition has continued. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11, the monument that honors the lives of the 49 residents who died that day was refurnished. Matt Geyer, a village native who lost his father Jimmy on 9/11, spoke of the solidarity residents showed him after his incredible loss. “While I have very painful memories of 20 years ago, I also remember the simple acts of kindness that members of this community showed to me, my family, and each other in those days after 9/11,” Geyer said in front of hundreds of residents gathered.Morerecently, the Village Green was a place of hope and excitement when Rockville Centre native Greta Ohanian, who overcame cancer six years ago, had her kickoff event to run 4,000 miles from Baltimore to San Francisco over this summer to lend a hand at cancer centers to tell her story to those who are battling cancer and other severe illnesses. Taking a walk or a drive on Maple Avenue offers pedestrians and motorists a glimpse into Rockville Centre’s past, its present and future.

N orth and South Park avenues combine to be another one of the village’s unofficial downtown areas. In what has become a yearly occurrence, the Chamber of Commerce put on the Eat, Shop, Rock event in October 2021. Another vibrant area of village businesses and activities, the streets saw thousands of guests browse what each store has to offer. The outing included 75 vendors, 50 food trucks, 28 sponsors and 18 live bands on Park Avenue between Sunrise Highway and Lincoln Avenue. Local businesses opened pop-up shops; bands from the School of Rock and other musicians performed; there were also carnival games and rides sponsored by the Rockville Centre Lions Club, and tents featuring local organizations, including American Legion Post 303.

Some 25 fire departments from surrounding communities rushed to the scene, along with the village fire department, police department, Department of Public Works and Office of Emergency Management. The state Environmental Conservation and Transportation departments and the Coast Guard were also on the scene. “We are thankful to the surrounding fire departments who came out and supported us,” village spokeswoman Julie Grilli said. “We’re proud of the Rockville Centre Fire Department, the largest all-volunteer department in the state, and thankful for our village employees, as well as help from the county and state agencies.”

The John A. Anderson Recreation Center, off North Long Beach Road on North Oceanside Road, is in the midst of a renaissance after the pandemic. Work scheduled to be performed two years ago that was stalled because of Covid has finally begun; the façade and exterior of the building are receiving a makeover and will have an enhanced appearance. Thanks to a village capital project and help from community members, the center will continue to be a place where young residents make amazing memories.Alsoalong North Long Beach Road is the Rockville Links Club, an 18-hole, par 72, 6,257yard oasis of golf in the village. According to Golf Now, the course has “terrific views and challenging play for golfers at every skill level,” and has “wellgroomed fairways and greens,” which keeps play challenging yet fun.

L ocated just around the corner from each other, The Cathedral of St. Agnes and St. Agnes Cathedral School are some of the most storied institutions in the village. On Quealy Place and Clinton Avenue, respectively, St. Agnes is the seat of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, led by Bishop John Oliver Barres, which includes nearly every Catholic church on Long Island. The Parish of St. Agnes predates the school by 30 years. A white marble stone church was built in 1905 in less than three decades the intimate house of worship was insufficient for the growing parish. Construction of a new church started in 1933, under the direction of Msgr. Peter Quealy, and the current building was completed two years later. The school, founded in 1917, offers an academic and spiritual Bounding around Quealy Place and Clinton Avenue

Diving into the past to assist the future, the connected Catholic institutions revitalized the St. Agnes Bazaar for the first time since the 1970s. The event took place this year from June 24 to 26. The blacktop behind the school saw thousands of guests enjoy rides, music, food and games. The cathedral’s rector Fr. Michael Duffy was inspired to bring back the old tradition because of a similar event held at Our Lady of Lourdes in Malverne, where he also served as a priest. “This has been my dream,” Duffy said. “For years, I’ve wanted to have an event where people can come together and have a positive experience with the church but also have funThetogether.”school also rallied to strike out amyotrophic lateral sclerosis what is known as Lou Gehrig’s disease in May, with hundreds of students lining Clinton Avenue to venerate Paul Weisman and other Long Islanders fighting the disease. The ALS Ride for Life event showed that even after the pandemic, the school continues to be active in the community. — Tom Carrozza

H empstead Avenue has seen more than a few changes in the past year. Notably, Molloy College announced that it had attained university status in April and by June officially was renamed Molloy University. Founded in 1955 by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville, Molloy has grown from a women’s’ only school to an institution with graduate programs, and an extremely vital nursing school. The Barbara H. Hagan School of Nursing and Health Sciences includes programs that prepares its students for licensure as registered professional nurses, respiratory care providers, speech-language pathologists, cardiovascular or nuclear medicine technologists or as health services administrators.

In late June 2022, a member of the university’s board of trustees, S. Zaki Hossain, gifted the school $2 million to go towards the new care.“Iaemployees, fortoprogramdevelopmentworkforceintendedprovidetrainingprivateindustrywithfocusinhealthalwaysfelt

Hempstead Avenue also serves the home of one of the village’s two main synagogues. During the height of Covid in 2020, Congregation of B’Nai Sholom-Beth David welcomed a new rabbi in David Lerner. Lerner and Rabbi Michael Cohen of Demott Avenue’s Central Synagogue Beth-Emeth became emblematic of community involvement becoming the fire department’s chaplains in April Adding2022.to the religious fervor on the avenue is the presence of St. Mark’s Methodist Church led by Pastor Gunshik Shim. Hempstead Avenue from Southern State Parkway to North Village Avenue serves as connecting roadway through Rockville Centre, a village that offers much variety to its residents and visitors. — Tom Carrozza Tom Carrozza/Herald

S queezed in between North Park Avenue and Quealy Place is a short but robust street known as College Place. As the center of the village government, Rockville Centre Village Hall has been the home of much activity and conversation. It also serves as a place for the village trustees and Mayor Francis Murray to highlight people making a difference in theDuringcommunity.Rockville Centre’s many parades, 1 College Place is where local dignitaries wave to the marchers. For the next few months, the building is under construction with a new HVAC system being installed. Village Hall has temporarily been moved to 34 Maple Ave., the old police headquarters. Right around the corner from College Place is Front Street and the village’s Long Island Rail Road station. The street is known for its fine dining and delectable dessert from the popular Front Street Bakery, whose dot cookies and black and white cookies have become local favorites.
