UPCOMING EVENTS November 4 Club Work Day November 29 Monthly Meeting

Club Officers: President: Rich Whitlow rwhitlow@gmail.com

Letter from the Editor/President Its been a while since I have updated the club through the newsletter, so most of you know there is a lot going on!

Vice-President: Drew Roussea drewmrousseau@gmail.com Secretary: Lamar Stevens lamarcstevens@gmail.com

I have sent out a Letter with your renewal form addressing a lot of what has physically happened and our continuing financial needs. Basically, within the next 2 years we should be wrapping up a lot of the “necessities” and little stuff and start planning on some of the bigger ideas that have been suggested by the club members. (i.e. Club House, Electricity, Permanent Bathrooms, **insert your idea here**) The sky is the limit, but we must be organized and keep our projects in priority, so that we can get done what we want to accomplish, based on our cash flow. On another front, we are venturing into a new space. Drone Racing. We have established with BREC a dedicated facility for our FPV Racing. It is named “Highland Road FPV Park”. This is a great facility for our club members and once again we will work to make it the best in the South, as is our Farr Model Air Park. We have had people flying at the facility for a few weeks now and have had guests fly. All have said that this is a tremendous park to fly in.

Treasurer: Larry Feiss ldfeiss@gmail.com

Redstick RC Club meets on the last Wednesday of the month (except December) at Jones Creek Library at 7:00 pm Farr Model Airpark is located approx 2 miles south of Brightside Ln. on River Road

A new issue that has come up, is that people from out of the area are travelling here to use the field. So, we have formed a committee to develop a membership class or pay as you go option….or something else. We will see what the committee comes up with. We just need to be able to get as many people access to the site and also add a revenue stream for the club, so that we can make the improvements and maintain the site, as needed. This is an exciting opportunity for the club to be on the groundwork of something awesome. You will also see that we have an upcoming Fall Fun Fly coming up in November. We will also have some scheduled work days. I will try to keep these dates listed on the upcoming events in the newsletter. We will also look into some additional communication options, such as resurrecting the website. The club continues to grow and do exciting things. PLEASE consider volunteering and helping in some way. Just giving little bits of time helps, when everyone in the club does the same. There are a lot of simple short tasks that can be done and there are opportunities to be more involved, also. I will try to keep a club needs column to keep you up to date on how you can help. I look forward to renewal season and getting the new year started. Take advantage of the free T-Shirt and get your renewal in early. We will not sell this color T-Shirt, though we have the Gray available.

Till next month. Cover Photo By: Rich Whitlow

Vice Presidents’ Views Vice President’s Column: Drew Rousseau “Fly” On Over to Facebook These days, social media is the name of the game. When I took over the Red Stick RC Club Facebook page in 2015, only 34 people liked the page and interaction was minimal. With more frequent posting and promotion, we now have 224 people that are following our page. If you have a Facebook account, please “like” and “share” our club’s page! The more exposure we get through social media, the more new members and visitors we will see at the field. We were able to spread the word about our grand opening through social media and, as a result, had a fantastic turnout. Our page features events (both our own and other clubs), videos, updates on the field, and great photos taken by our own President. Feel free to get involved and share your own photos and videos to our page! Find us by searching Red Stick RC Club.

Control Line Stunt Zachary, LA

By: Rich Whitlow Steve Blanchard and I got an opportunity to go out to Zacchary and see a great Control Line Stunt competitions. This is an area of our hobby that I have not had any experience with, in years. And only with the old .049 Cox models, as a kid. Brent Rogillio was a gracious guest and gave us some great insight on the competition.

Safety Corner

Lamar Stevens/Rich Whitlow This month we would like to talk a little bit about airspace and airspace control. We have a large fly over area, but we can fly out of that area, if we are not careful. For a pilot flying by himself, the “dead line” is the runway. You should never fly over the pilots area. If you continually fly over the pilot area, then you could get grounded. A pilot flying with other pilots, should observe a deadline at the far side of the runway. The pilot should not fly over the runway, unless he notifies the other pilots that he is doing so. This includes takeoffs, landings and touch and goes. On the north and south of the field, you should not fly past where you can orient and control the plane. You should also never fly over any people or buildings. If you find that you have gotten beyond this, or you cannot prevent flight over the people in the pits, you should crash the plane into a safe part of the ground. Also, make sure that your failsafes are set to reduce the throttle. So that if you do get out of range the plane will not hit something while at full throttle. Remember, safety is everyone’s job. Our field and ability to fly at this field depends on us being safe and preventing accidents. Have a fun and safe time

Meeting Reviews

Meeting Date: July, August & September Some good news, as the club has inducted 14new members in the last three meetings. This brings us to 88 members. Field Committee has reported all of the happenings at the field. There has been lots of grass cutting, cleaning up and weed killer applied. Also, Ken Hadley has retired from Field Maintenance Manager. He has done a tremendous amount of work and we thank him for that. We need some people to step up and help to keep this field looking good. Some safety issues that have come up, are to remind people to be sure no one else is binding their aircraft when you are binding. Also, use starting sticks when starting large engines. It only takes once to regret it! The new Highland Road FPV Park is open. We have added some signs and gates and obstacles have been built for the races. It was reminded to everyone that Saturdays in September are Cross Country Race Days. On those days the fiel will be closed in the morning, until the races are complete. Dont forget that every 3rd Saturday of the Month is training day. Come out and bring a trainer if you have one and help those new to the hobby.

I was a terrific experience to hone my judging skills and see some great pilots and airplanes that are the best out there. Enjoy some pics and anytime you get a chance to get to Muncie, don’t miss the chance!

Highland Road FPV Park News Vice President’s Column: Drew Rousseau It has been a great start for the Highland Road FPV! Since BREC allowed the use of the park starting in early September there have been several members setting up some really cool race tracks and flying quads almost every weekend. The Fall weather is really starting to shape up so we are hoping to see some really great racing in the next couple of months. Redtick FPV put on their first FPV event on October 1, 2017 called the “training wheels (on) Fun Fly as a testing ground for future races. For our first race ever we had over 10 registered pilots including two local pilots who are top 5 contenders in the nation! If you haven’t caught Corey “C-Train” Yates or Wes “RRuReady” Comeaux’s killer FPV videos highlighting the Redstick HIhgland Road Racing park and scene – you are really missing out. You can follow C-Train on youtube at https://www.youtube. com/user/civicsisolja And RRuReady at https://www.youtube.com/user/rruready72 Our second event on October 14, 2017 had fewer pilots but was just as much fun. All of these events are serving as primers as Redstick is gearing up to be a great racing track for the whole Southern Region. Randall “Big Money Grip” Gripper AKA “Grip” has teamed up with some of the best and the brightest in the FPV world and has been learning to operate the brand-new state of the art Immersion RC lapRF 8-way event race timing system. This timing system is the latest and greatest in FVP race timing. Instead of using the old transponder / light systems where each quad needed a transponder coded to it, this system tunes to the frequency of your quads video transmission system “VTX” or goggle channel and tracks the quad with this. This timing system works in coordination with LiveTime scoring engine which keeps tracks of racers with a live feed for online viewing of race results!

Red Stick R/C Club

Grip has been learning from our FPV brothers at Acadian FPV more specifically, Shannon “Crash” Broussard who is a nationally recognized MultiGP team member and was the official IRC lapRF8 timer for the Nationals FPV races that were held this year in Reno, NV. Shannon was generous enough to donate his time to showing Grip the system and teach him the ins and outs. We are working closer to obtaining storage for gates and track material at the park as well as more long-term race tracks setup with increased BREC involvement and approval. Upcoming events: Redstick has been asked to put on a race/demo on October 28, 2017 at the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair. Grab your quad and come out and join us for some fall weather great racing!! If you are not already a member of MultiGP, just go to www.multigp.com and sign up. It is free and all you need is a valid AMA number. Once you are a member you can view all of Redstick’s upcoming events as well as events held by other chapters in our area. I sometimes get asked questions about what skills levels can come to these events or just fly at the park and I want to assure all of the members that the FPV guys are friendly and always there to help with questions about racing, gear, or just general anything FPV! We would love to see more of our local members come out and fly so charge up those lipos, clean off your goggles, and let it rip! Greg “G-Man” Rozas

Red Stick R/C Flying Club

2017 Club Manual and General Information The Red Stick R/C Club is a non-profit, AMA sanctioned club, organized for the purpose of securing and maintaining a flying field and facilities for the operation of radio controlled model aircraft. Our fields are South of Farr Horse Park on River Road and on Highland Road across from the Highland Road Tennis Center. Our Flying Club was formed in 1986. We maintain a membership of 90 to 130 and currently have no membership limit. We have an annual slate of friendly competitive events and an annual Club picnic. Some of our members compete at the national level and have placed well in national class events. Club meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month (except for December when there is no meeting) at the Public Library on Jones Creek Road, at 7:00 PM. Meetings are open to visitors. Many meetings will feature a guest speaker, workshop, or program of general interest. Many of the members are qualified and available to assist student pilots in learning to fly. New members who want assistance are introduced to members who can help out. Some of these members have special “Training Cords” which enable compatible transmitters to be slaved to the instructor’s transmitter creating a dual control setup. This will let you learn faster with less risk of crashing. (Before buying any RC equipment, please check to see if the rig you think you want is compatible with a trainer port configuration. All the local hobby shops offer equipment that is compatible if you request it.) Although the flight line is open to members seven days a week, the best time for a new visitor to meet us at the field will be on Saturday or Sunday mornings when the weather is good. You can count on a good turnout on those days and plenty of help getting started. Also, there will be dedicated trainers on the 3rd Saturday of each month. In order to fly at our field (even while learning to fly), you must either, a) be a current member of the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics), or b) participate in our Introductory Pilot Program. AMA membership packets are available at the field, or through the AMA’s web site at http://www.modelaircraft.org. If you are trying to decide whether R/C flying is right for you, you may be eligible to participate in our Introductory Pilot Program. This special AMA sponsored Program permits you to learn to fly for up to 30 consecutive days prior to joining the AMA. Our Club maintains a list of Introductory Pilots and Instructor Pilots. This is a fun hobby, and one that can provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment, challenge, and great friendships. Please feel free to speak with any of our members at the field, or you may contact Rich Whitlow @ rwhitlow@ gmail.com. Please save this packet for future reference. You can also visit us at our web site at http://www.redstickrc.org or Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/RedStickRcClub/
