Restoring the Wild
Conservation and Community at Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve
Nestled just 20 minutes northeast of Louisville, in Oldham County, Kentucky, Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve spans 170 acres, inviting visitors to explore nature’s many wonders. Located at 12501 Harmony Landing Road in Goshen, this peaceful retreat features more than nine miles of scenic walking trails, a 15,000-squarefoot playground, twenty acres of native meadows, and beautifully preserved historic structures. Operated as a charitable organization, the preserve relies heavily on community involvement, donations, and the hard work of volunteers to maintain its natural beauty. Despite being private property, the preserve offers free access to the public, hosting over 60,000 visitors annually, increasing every year since Executive Director Tavia Cathcart Brown began her tenure 16 years ago.
At the heart of the preserve’s mission is conservation, education, and the promotion of nature-based enjoyment. In 1975, founders Virginia Creasey Mahan and Howard Mahan established the preserve to protect their beloved Hill O’ Content Farm, a property gifted to them as a wedding present in 1921. With the help of local and federal conservation agencies, the land—originally a mix of pastures and small tree patches— was transformed into a thriving woodland ecosystem. Over 100,000 trees and shrubs were planted, developing the preserve into a sanctuary for wildlife, native plants, and the local community.
Among the preserve’s many attractions is the enchanting Woodland Garden, a labor of love that has evolved over the past decade. What started as a two-acre patch of weedy forest in 2010 is now a naturalisticdesigned garden that showcases Kentucky’s native wildflowers, shrubs, and ferns.
By Kirsten E. Silven
“The garden exists today thanks to the work of volunteers of all skill levels, from beginners to highly trained Master Gardeners,” shared Cathcart Brown. Eagle Scouts also played an integral role in the garden’s transformation, designing paths, benches, and arched bridges that wind through the garden’s peaceful landscape.
A focal point of the Woodland Garden is its carefully crafted water features. A meandering creek, two arched bridges, a three-step waterfall, and a pond bring serenity to the space, offering visitors the perfect setting to rest on a bench or swing, listen to birdsong, and enjoy the soothing sound of flowing water.
“We truly are here to serve the community, and we want people to experience the wonders of nature, create new memories and enjoy green time instead of screen time,” Cathcart Brown explained.
This area has become one of the preserve’s most popular spots for private events, particularly weddings. Couples are drawn to the garden’s tranquil beauty, with its serene pathways, lush greenery, and seating areas framed by native trees such as the Black Pearl redbud and red buckeye. The entire preserve, from the layered bog and its moisture-loving plants to the irises and Aphrodite sweet shrub growing near the pond, offers an intimate and magical setting for gatherings and celebrations.

3 The delicate pink blooms of a bleeding heart stand out against a lush backdrop of vibrant green foliage. Although not native to Kentucky, this non-invasive plant is a cherished addition to the Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve, where it plays a valuable role in supporting pollinators, particularly bees.
For those interested in Kentucky’s native flora, the Woodland Garden is a premier destination. It features more than 550 varieties of wildflowers, ferns, shrubs, and trees, with a distinct emphasis on native plants that thrive in the region. The garden’s shaded section reaches peak bloom in spring, showcasing colorful displays of Virginia Bluebells, Dwarf Larkspur, Trilliums, a wide variety of ferns, and more. The sunnier section, certified as a Monarch Waystation and known as the Michael J. Strang Memorial Garden, bursts into bloom between July and September, offering nectar plants like Pale Purple Coneflower, Swamp Hibiscus, Trumpet Honeysuckle Vine, and native Milkweed species, all critical for pollinators such as monarch butterflies.
Another key feature of the preserve is its rich history. The property houses two structures over 200 years old: a spring house built in 1805 from locally quarried limestone, and a manor house dating back to 1807, built out of tulip poplar trees harvested from the farm. The Field House, surrounded by the preserve’s striking landscapes, is available for private events, alongside three covered picnic pavilions, providing an ideal setting for weddings, family gatherings, and other community events. Also, the county library has occupied the old dairy barn, constructed in 1826, blending history with modern amenities.
At the heart of the preserve’s community engagement is Thrive Forest School, Louisville’s first nature-based preschool. This innovative program provides child-led, exploratory learning in the forest, fostering curiosity, creativity, social interaction, and an appreciation for nature from an early age.
“Development and learning are enhanced when children are given the space and confidence to follow their interests and curiosities,” explained Cathcart Brown. “This fosters a love of learning that will serve them well in primary school and beyond.”
As a public charity, the preserve benefits from its all-volunteer Board of Directors, led by Barry Hines, Esq., and the tireless efforts of volunteers like John Hubbard, M.D., and Clara Ann Pallares, M.D., who also contribute to the preserve’s flourishing gardens. Volunteers such as the late Ralph Archer, a beloved local garden and fern enthusiast, recruited many local Master Gardeners to help maintain the landscape’s natural beauty.
Throughout the year, the preserve also holds various events that invite the community to experience the wonder of nature firsthand.
“We regularly host free and low-cost events, including classes and nature walks,” Cathcart Brown shared. “And our Nature of Christmas event, cohosted by the City of Goshen, is beloved by many.”
Other upcoming events include a “Build Your Own Terrarium” class in January, “The Great Backyard Bird Count” in February, and the Butterfly Ball on May 16, 2025—a special gala aimed at raising funds to renovate the historic library into a new visitor center and support Thrive Forest School scholarships.

1 After its complete restoration by Grace Rug Gallery, the Persian Serapi rug is now in museum-quality condition. Its vibrant colors and intricate patterns have been revived, preserving its historical significance and allowing the owner to continue enjoying this family heirloom for generations.
TIMELESS TREASURES
EXPERT TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR ANTIQUE RUGS
By Ray Hunter
Antique rugs are more than just floor coverings; they are pieces of history and art that require special attention to maintain their beauty and longevity. Whether a handwoven Persian masterpiece or a family heirloom passed down through generations, caring for an antique rug involves understanding its unique needs and characteristics. We spoke with several experts in the field—Tracey Williams of Kelly-Williamson Expert Rug Cleaning, and Hassan and Christina Rahimi of Grace Rug Gallery—who shared their insights on properly caring for these precious textiles.
According to Tracey Williams, owner and operations manager at Kelly-Williamson Expert Rug Cleaning, the most frequent issue antique rug owners face is pet stains. “Pet stains can cause permanent discoloration if left to sit too long,” he said. “The sooner you can get the rug to a cleaning professional, the better.”
This is especially crucial because older rugs can be more sensitive to chemicals and improper cleaning methods. Another challenge he mentions is the tendency for people to use steam cleaning on Persian rugs, which can be incredibly damaging. “For a rug to be cleaned, it has to be submerged in water,” Tracey said. “Steam cleaning is cheap but harmful, causing the wool to fray and the dyes to migrate.”
2
Hassan Rahimi, co-owner of Grace Rug Gallery, echoes these sentiments, particularly emphasizing the fragility of antique rugs due to their age. “Antique rugs are the most beautiful because they’ve been around for so long, but they are fragile,” he said. “Proper cleaning and restoration services are so important. It requires a specific process to restore a rug and keep the brilliance of the colors intact.”
When it comes to maintaining the beauty and integrity of antique rugs, Williams suggests a few simple yet essential tips. First, use a vacuum cleaner that is gentle on the rug. “Don’t vacuum the fringe and rotate the rug regularly to distribute foot traffic evenly,” he said. He also warns against trying to clean an antique rug at home. “Never try to clean an antique rug yourself. It will dry rot and fall apart.”
The Rahimis agree, highlighting that proper care extends beyond just cleaning. “If a rug starts fraying, proper restoration—done by hand—is crucial,” Hassan said.
Antique rugs are made to last if properly cared for, and the proper cleaning and restoration methods can ensure they do. Hassan has extensive knowledge of antique rugs, from the materials and dyes used to where they were made. This understanding allows the team at Grace Rug Gallery to provide more than just a cleaning service; they offer a restoration process that revitalizes the rug without compromising its integrity.
Both Williams and the Rahimis have encountered some extraordinary rugs over the years. Williams recalls cleaning a massive 20-30 foot rug that had to be cleaned in two stages because it was too large for the equipment. “We essentially cleaned it twice,” he said, underscoring the attention to detail required for such tasks.
Hassan Rahimi shared stories of clients who didn’t realize the value of their rugs. “We had a client bring in an 1850 Persian rug that was beautiful, but they had no idea how valuable it was,” he said. After cleaning and restoring it, the client decided to keep the rug rather than sell it. Another memorable experience involved a woman who found a rug on the curb. “It was breathtaking, and after we restored it, it was valued at $15,000,” Hassan added.
For antique rug owners, professional cleaning is not just a recommendation; it’s a necessity. Both Kelly-Williamson Expert Rug Cleaning and Grace Rug Gallery offer specialized cleaning services tailored to the unique needs of antique textiles. These services often take two weeks, as rugs must be thoroughly washed and air-dried to preserve quality. Additionally, both businesses provide restoration services to mend fraying edges or restore colors that have faded over time.
Tracey Williams emphasized that antique rugs should be cleaned every 3-5 years, depending on their usage. At Grace Rug Gallery, the Rahimis also offer custom rug services, where they can create a personalized rug based on your preferences, with a turnaround time of fewer than two months.
Caring for an antique rug requires patience and expertise, but with the proper guidance and professional help, you can preserve these treasures for future generations. Whether you’re dealing with pet stains, fraying edges, or just looking for regular cleaning, Tracey, Hassan, and Christina are ready to help keep your antique rugs in pristine condition.

3 This before-and-after transformation shows the dramatic results that professional cleaning can have on antique rugs. Years of dirt and wear have been removed, revealing the intricate patterns and original colors of the rug underneath. Proper cleaning can extend the life of these timeless pieces, allowing them to be enjoyed for many more years.
4 Before restoration, the fringe of this antique rug is matted and torn, showing signs of heavy wear. Damaged fringe can quickly worsen without proper care, diminishing the rug’s overall aesthetic and structural integrity.

Hot Trends in Fireplace Design
Hot Trends in Fireplace Design
By Kirsten E. Silven
Today’s luxury fireplaces are continuing to evolve as focal points, blending functionality with cutting-edge design. Homeowners are often drawn to options that combine a mix of modern aesthetics with traditional elements, resulting in a range of striking styles that can suit various architectural and interior design preferences.
Linear fireplaces, for example, remain a growing trend this year, popular for their clean, frameless designs that fit seamlessly into contemporary, transitional and traditional spaces alike. They often feature sleek stone or tile surrounds, making them ideal for minimalist interiors. However, these linear designs are no longer limited to contemporary aesthetics.
“Today’s linear fireplaces don’t always have to be of a contemporary design,” says Jeanne Sallee, a designer and fireplace professional with Housewarmings. “Now, linear fireplaces also come with log options, whenever a more traditional look is desired.”
This fusion of modern lines with traditional materials offers versatility, allowing homeowners to create a fireplace that complements their personal style while maintaining a sophisticated, contemporary vibe.
Fireplace surrounds are also evolving, now being treated as more than just functional features—they’re becoming key design statements. Stone, particularly natural varieties like limestone, travertine, and granite, remain top choices for their organic beauty and timeless appeal. “In central Kentucky, natural stone remains very popular for fireplace surrounds, along with tile,” shared Sallee. “Many are continuing the stone from floor to ceiling with no mantel, creating a very clean, sophisticated look.”
Tiles, especially with bold patterns or geometric designs, are also making a comeback, offering homeowners a chance to personalize their fireplaces with striking colors and textures. Tiled surrounds are also practical, as they’re easy to maintain and can suit a variety of interior looks.
Another trend that continues to rise in popularity is the integration of fireplaces with entertainment systems. Combining a fireplace with a mounted TV above creates a dual-purpose focal point in living rooms and other family spaces. This design approach is particularly appealing in open-concept homes, where it seamlessly merges entertainment and relaxation zones. However, as Sallee points out, “It’s important to ensure the wall is designed to properly accommodate a television if you desire to mount one above the fireplace, and there are several ways to accommodate this in the design without damaging the electronics.”
While modern and transitional designs are definitely becoming more popular, there’s still a strong demand for traditional wood-burning fireplaces and stoves in Kentucky. These models bring a sense of nostalgia and old-world charm, especially in more rustic or traditionally styled homes. Matt Reed, general manager of Barnhill Chimney notes, “Traditionally, the Lexington area has leaned toward more wood-burning fireplaces, but over the last 10 years or so, gas products have definitely been on the rise.”
“This year, we are also seeing increased demand for high efficiency fireplaces and wood burning stoves,’ Reed added. Homeowners appreciate the ambiance that wood-burning fireplaces offer, but many are opting instead for high-efficiency gas or wood-burning models that meet modern efficiency standards.
“We have over 1250 five-star Google reviews and are truly a ‘one stop shop’ for everything related to fireplaces and chimneys,” shared Reed. “As a full-service company, we can repair, install, replace and build your fireplace, chimney or woodstove.”
As homes have grown in size, so too have fireplaces. “A fireplace serves as a focal point in any room, and today we are seeing a push for larger models to complement the scale of newer homes, where more traditionally-sized fireplaces just don’t work anymore,” says Antwan Higgins of Fireplace Concepts. Oversized fireplaces not only work to fill larger spaces, but also provide the grandeur that some homeowners seek. These larger models make a bold statement, ensuring that the fireplace remains a central design element in even the most expansive rooms. Higgins says the demand for larger linear styles is increasing, in part because the width can easily match that of our new oversized flat screen television sets.
“Regardless of its design details, your fireplace should always work with the scale of the home and other elements in the room,” Higgins said.
In fact, design flexibility is another key trend in recent years, with innovations offering new possibilities for installation. For example, some types of fireplaces can now be placed almost anywhere in the home without the need for an exterior chimney. “One advantage to a direct vent fireplace is that it doesn’t have to be installed on an exterior wall, as long as there is a way to gain access to the outdoors,” Sallee notes. “The vent can go up, straight out or down to accomplish this, providing ample design versatility.”
Finally, electric fireplaces have also gained significant traction in recent years due to their flexibility and ever-evolving aesthetics. With realistic flames, customizable features, and even multicolor flame options, electric fireplaces allow homeowners to add warmth and ambiance to virtually any room, regardless of space or venting constraints. They also integrate well with smart home systems, providing convenience and efficiency for modern living. “The electric category has been growing in recent years,” explains Higgins, “opening up the ability to incorporate a fireplace look and feel virtually anywhere in the home.”
At its core, fireplace design is all about blending tradition with a more modern lifestyle, combining innovative materials and technology with timeless aesthetics. “It’s also very important to carefully consider how you plan to use a fireplace - especially how often and how long - because different types are designed for different burn times,” Reed added.
Whether opting for a minimalist linear look, a cozy wood-burning stove, or a statement-making direct vent fireplace, today’s homeowners have more choices than ever to make a fireplace the real heart of the home.
5 A striking blend of modern elegance and warmth, this dining room showcases the ability to easily incorporate fireplaces into non-traditional spaces. The linear, direct-vent fireplace by Travis Industries, seamlessly embedded within a stunning floor-to-ceiling stone wall, exudes both style and functionality. With its sleek design, the fireplace creates a dramatic visual focal point, enhancing the clean lines of the room. Breathing New Life Into Ancient Art
By Ray Hunter Photography Courtesy of Julie Christmann & Lucia Harmon Photography
rtist Julie Christmann is a lifelong resident of Northern Kentucky with a deep fascination for rocks. Growing up surrounded by nature, she spent much of her childhood camping with family, exploring the natural beauty of Kentucky’s landscapes. Visits to places like Lake Cumberland and Carter Caves provide the foundation for her love of the outdoors. “These are the fondest memories of my childhood, and you can see that influence in the art I create,” she said. Her work as an accomplished mosaic artist deeply reflects this connection with nature.
Julie’s artistic journey began early, and she was influenced by her father, who loved to sketch and paint landscapes. “It was rare for him not to have a pencil in his hand, scribbling out thoughts onto scraps of paper,” she fondly recalled. Her exposure to various art forms eventually led her to experiment with different mediums. After years of exploration, she landed on mosaics in 2012, a decision that transformed her artistic path.
“I tend to follow my curiosity, so I’ve spent a lot of time exploring one art form or another over the years before I landed on mosaics,” she explained. Her introduction to mosaic art began with an 8-week class at the Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center in Covington, where she became captivated by the diversity of materials, textures, and dimensions available within the medium. The class marked the start of her deep dive into the ancient and intricate world of mosaics.
The ancient art of mosaics heavily inspires Julie’s work, and she is fascinated by the materials and tools that have been used for centuries. “I learned that the very first mosaics, and perhaps the very first forms of art made by humans, were made of simple pebbles,” she said. “These ancient tools, known as the hammer and hardie, are still used today by professional mosaicists to hand-cut their materials.”
2
2 Julie Christmann, a mosaic artist from Northern Kentucky, redefines the art form by bringing nature to life with ancient materials like stone and smalti. Her work, deeply rooted in the natural landscapes of her childhood, showcases a unique connection to both art and nature.
Julie also incorporates Italian smalti, a richly colored glass popular during the Byzantine Era, into her work. The ancient techniques and materials she uses allow her to create art that bridges history with modern-day interpretations. Her process is intuitive and deeply connected to the natural world. Her inspiration often comes from the Kentucky landscape, where she collects shale and other stones for her pieces.
“There is nothing quite like cutting open a stone and realizing that you are the first person in thousands… even millions of years to see what awaits inside of it,” she reflected. The unpredictability of working with stone adds a sense of adventure to her creative process. Each piece is unique, and the diverse properties of different stones allow her to explore new ways of interpreting nature through art.
Though her creative process is often spontaneous, Julie carefully balances intuition with technique. She acknowledges the importance of understanding the “rules” of ancient mosaic work, such as how stones are cut and placed to achieve harmony in the composition. “These rules are helpful in creating a work of art with unity and flow. But like many other mosaic artists today, I’ve learned the rules in order to know when and how to break them,” she explained. This allows her to push the boundaries of traditional mosaic techniques while maintaining the structural integrity that the medium demands.
Her work blends the historical significance of mosaics with contemporary aesthetics, creating timeless and innovative pieces. “I manipulate materials to add dimension and reflectivity, and I incorporate texture to create interest,” she said. This approach can be seen in her “Sleeping Land” series, a collection of landscape mosaics made from natural stone and accented with 24k gold smalti. These pieces evoke a sense of calm and balance, which Julie finds in nature and hopes to convey through her art.
For Julie, one of the most important aspects of her work is its ability to reconnect people with the natural world. “In our modern world, we often lose sight of the simple things, like connecting with the earth and the essence of nature,” she added. “These are things that can bring us the most joy if we slow down and take notice.” Through her mosaics, she aims to bring the beauty of nature into everyday spaces, offering viewers a moment of peace and reflection in an increasingly fast-paced world.
In addition to her large-scale mosaics, she also creates wearable art. Her jewelry pieces are crafted using micromosaic techniques, where tiny pieces of glass and stone are meticulously arranged to create intricate designs. “I wanted to create a portable work of art,” she explained. These pieces, often featuring miniature landscapes, allow people to carry a small piece of nature with them wherever they go.

FESTIVE TRADITIONS AND TIMELESS CHARM
A Christmas Celebration In Georgetown
By Ray Hunter
Ladonna Hope Crawford’s home in Ironworks Estates, Georgetown, is a picturesque blend of tradition, warmth, and family memories. Having lived in this charming 2,030 square-foot cottage for 21 years, Ladonna Hope and her family have filled its three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths with cozy furnishings and decades of love and shared experiences.
The home was built in 2002, and the Crawford’s purchased it in 2003, creating a space that reflects h er love for traditional English design while incorporating personal touches that make it uniquely her own. “I would describe the design as traditional with several antiques, cozy, with a livedin look,” she said. “It’s slightly on the formal side, but I like to mix it up.” Despite the mix, there is a cohesive flow throughout the home, a testament to her careful curation of decor and space.
A favorite feature of the home is an antique oak buffet table, a treasured wedding present from her mother-in-law. This particular piece plays a central role in her seasonal decor. “I practically live in the kitchen, but the buffet table is something I always decorate each year for Christmas,” she said. Ladonna Hope has a deep appreciation for heritage and sentiment, with her home’s decor choices speaking to both function and family history.
Christmas is an especially magical time at the Crawford home, where the holiday season begins long before December. “I start Christmas around the first of November,” she said.
Preparation involves meticulously planning both meals and decorations, creating an inviting atmosphere for her family, including her two children, Lauren and Jordan, and her six grandchildren. Lauren, a children’s adventure book author, and Jordan, who serves in the Navy, make it a point to bring their families back home for the holidays.
Hosting Christmas dinners is a long-standing tradition in the Crawford household. “Every year, we have a formal Christmas dinner here, and all of the family comes in,” she said. She delights in decorating the table and adds personal touches like placing a unique gift at each family member’s seat, a practice rooted in European tradition.
The decor in her home is as dazzling as it is thoughtful, with Ladonna Hope personally handcrafting arrangements and selecting ornaments that capture both the spirit of the season and her personal tastes. One standout feature is her Christmas tree, which boasts over 500 ornaments, both clear and colored lights, creating an enchanting 3D jewel effect. “It’s hard not to be drawn to the tree,” she beamed, noting how the facets and colors mesmerize her guests year after year.
3 Inside the foyer, a charming German Christmas windmill sits on a side table, spinning with the gentle heat of candlelight—a nod to the appreciation for handcrafted holiday decor. The antique oak buffet and carefully placed ornaments enhance the festive yet cozy atmosphere.
While the entire house exudes holiday cheer, Ladonna Hope has particular spaces she loves to transform during the season. “I focus most of my energy on the dining room and living room,” she said. Jewel tones dominate the living room’s decor, with rich reds, greens, and golds giving the space an inviting yet elegant feel. In contrast, the dining room is more formal, ready for the “fancy dinner” as she affectionately calls it.
Beyond the aesthetic pleasures of the season, Christmas at the Crawford house is about creating lasting memories. One tradition that stands out is the family’s Christmas Eve book night. “For years and years, we would do book night on Christmas Eve, and everyone would get a book to read that evening,” she recalled fondly. These quiet, intimate moments make the holidays special, the kind of memories that stay with family members long after the festivities are over.

The Crawford home is more than just a house—it reflects Ladonna Hope’s creativity, warmth, and love for her family. It’s a place where traditions are honored, memories are made, and every Christmas is a little more magical than the last. 3
When it comes to hosting, Ladonna Hope is meticulous in her preparations. “I have a little notebook for each room so I have an idea of how I want it to look,” she said. Her favorite colors—jewel tones like ruby, emerald, and gold—define the living room’s look, while the dining room is dressed up for more formal occasions. And no Christmas would be complete without her signature dishes.
“I make Beef Wellington, tarragon potatoes, sunshine carrots, green beans, and corn every year,” she added. “For dessert, the 3-chocolate mousse is a three-day production.”

8 This bright and inviting kitchenette is where Ladonna Hope and her family enjoy most of their meals. The dollhouse on top of the bookshelf was handmade by her children, a sentimental piece she treasures. The light-filled space is perfect for casual dining, with decorative details and a cozy feel that make every meal special.

When Christmas Comes to Lexington
By Kirsten E. Silven
1 A circular drive leads through thousands of winter lights, while a sound system plays traditional Christmas music and whimsical characters bring unbounded cheer to the Turner home every Christmas season. Each year, bringing this awe-inspiring display to life takes four people approximately four and a half weeks and 700 man hours to complete. Photo
When Ron and Linda Turner of Turner Development built this 9,800-square-foot home in southeast Lexington nearly 28 years ago, they planned ahead so they would be able to transform the exterior into a winter wonderland in celebration of the Christmas season each year, installing electric plugs virtually everywhere on the grounds, making it easier to create this incredible annual display.
“We designed and built the home and landscaping ourselves,” stated Ron Turner. “We wanted a home where our entire family could grow, so we went with an open floor plan and balanced design that really flows.”
Today, the house is a favorite gathering spot for the whole family, which has grown from just three children to include their spouses, 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Everyone lives nearby and works together in the various family businesses, so Ron and Linda’s home has become a hub for the expanding family to gather and spend time whenever they can.
“I like to say that we all work together, play together and pray together,” Ron shared. “We feel very blessed that our family is so close and supportive of one another.”
As for the home’s interior, the couple wanted large open spaces and light, neutral colors, so they went with an eggshell hue on the walls everywhere but the kitchen, which features a welcoming blush tone, and the sunroom, which has pops of teal carefully selected to complement the color of the pool during the summer months.
2 Each year when the Turner home is transformed into one of Kentucky’s most iconic Christmas houses, God Bless America shines proudly front and center, welcoming all who come to experience this incredible Display. Ron and Linda found this sign in Gatlinburg just a few weeks after 9/11, and knew right away it was just the added touch they needed.

3 Marble tile floors, an awe-inspiring staircase and a soft eggshell hue on the walls lend a stately, luxurious feel to the home’s impressive foyer, which opens to the main living room to the right and kitchen to the left. Three oversized master suites upstairs are located upstairs, while the main master is located down the left side hallway that is just visible in the foreground here.

4 The home’s grand foyer is also totally transformed each year for the holidays by Linda Turner, who created a whimsical scene here that includes Santa himself, two Christmas trees, Nutcrackers, ample ropes of cheery garland, stockings and a sleigh overflowing with gifts.

There are three master suites upstairs and a primary master on the first floor, while the flooring, countertops and fireplaces are all marble. In all, the home boasts five bedrooms, four full baths and three half baths.
“We really like the clean, light look of the home—it’s easy to decorate, because artwork and greenery really stands out,” Ron added.
The massive foyer boasts a grand staircase, offering the ideal spot for Santa to hang out with his sleigh during the holidays, while the main living room is situated just off the open kitchen. The entire interior also boasts impressive classic architectural details, including stately columns, trey ceilings and soaring ceiling height, creating an open, airy feel that is never boxy and always timeless.
“We designed this home to be lived in and we really do utilize every square foot,” Ron stated.
Outside, the home was raised to afford stunning views of the community’s four-acre lake, which lies just beyond the home’s impressive pool and outdoor living areas (not pictured). There is also a finished lower level with a large entertaining area, another bedroom and a workout room.
And now, as the holidays will soon be upon us once again, Linda Turner is already hard at work, planning special touches and fleshing out the themes for this year’s Christmas display, which always brings warmth and cheer to so many during this special time of year!
5 A cozy breakfast nook and seating area by the fireplace is situated just off the kitchen and looks out into the sunroom, offering ample space for the family to visit on long winter evenings. The gold and black tray ceiling and muted blush tone on the walls work with the marble floor and fireplace to lend a classic feel, while Linda’s splendid Christmas décor brings a special cheerful vibe to the space for the season. 7 & 8 Natural marble countertops complement the marble floor in the oversized kitchen, which is large enough to accommodate the entire family and also features an impressive tray ceiling. The tile backsplash adds a touch of texture with a three-dimensional design, while the dove gray chairs and range hood over the stove add a bit of contrast to the timeless white custom cabinetry.
Just for the holidays, Linda Turner added a wreath over the range and sink, as well as a jolly centerpiece on the island. Photos by Ron Turner.

10 Every night from Thanksgiving through to the New Year, the Turner home’s façade is illuminated with thousands of lights, perfectly capturing the magic of the season for all to see. Waving snowmen with their reindeer friends stand sentry atop the wall, while dwarf holly, boxwoods, taxus shrubs and evergreens provide color and structure for the merry scene. A Holiday Haven in Lexington Christmas Magic at Griffin Gate A Holiday Haven in Lexington Christmas Magic at Griffin Gate
By Kirsten E. Silven & Photography by Walt Roycraft
Homeowner Karen Smith has transformed her charming two-story residence at Marriott’s Griffin Gate Golf Club in Lexington into a festive wonderland, showcasing her passion for both Christmas and community. Nestled in the residential section of this resort-style neighborhood, Smith’s 2,400-square-foot home, built in 1989, has been lovingly renovated to reflect her sophisticated taste and holiday spirit. With sweeping views of the golf course, cozy fireplaces, and elegant Christmas décor, her home feels like a retreat during the holiday season—and all year round.
Since moving into the home three years ago, Smith has overseen nearly a full renovation of the property. “Living here feels like vacation every day, with gorgeous views of the 17th hole,” she shares. The house has been updated with new lighting, luxury vinyl flooring from Kentucky Flooring Warehouse, and a reimagined kitchen featuring quartz countertops and a ZLINE stove with mixed metal accents. Another of the kitchen’s centerpieces is a copper sink from Lux 218 Kitchen, Bath & Lighting in Danville, Kentucky, which adds warmth to the space and beautifully complements the other updates.
Throughout the home, the design is elegant yet inviting, with touches that bring a sense of warmth and personality. Barnhill Chimney Company updated the fireplaces in both the main living room and the expansive primary bedroom, converting them to gas logs. The whitewashed brick in the living room fireplace brightens the space, while the mantel’s holiday garland and golden accents set the tone for the season. “It was an easy change, but made a tremendous difference in the look of the room, giving it a warmer and more updated feel,” Smith notes.
Smith’s love for Christmas is evident in every corner of her home, where she has thoughtfully curated holiday décor that balances a fun sense of whimsy with classic elegance. She collaborates with The Craft Nook in Winchester and My Favorite Things in Lexington to ensure her Christmas displays are chic, refined, and full of seasonal allure. “It’s such a magical time of year, and the biggest part for me is about celebrating the birth of Jesus,” she explains.
1 In this cozy corner of the living room, a striking portrait of Santa Claus casts a knowing grin—not in his traditional red suit, but in a unique green and white ensemble, evoking a nostalgic, almost Norman Rockwell-like charm. The soft hues blend seamlessly with the rest of the room’s muted holiday decor, creating a warm, inviting vibe. Below, a silver Santa figurine stands beside an elegant holiday arrangement featuring frosted greenery, pinecones, and metallic accents, while a shimmering candle rests in a delicate sleigh-shaped holder, adding a touch of sparkle to the display.
The home’s open layout allows natural light to pour in through numerous glass doors and windows, which offer stunning views of the golf course and provide access to multiple outdoor decks. Seasonal greenery and poinsettias line the deck railing for the holidays, while a handcrafted grapevine reindeer pulls a festive sleigh from The Craft Nook, adding holiday cheer to the outdoor seating areas.
The primary bedroom, located on the second floor, boasts a cozy seating area, a fireplace, and access to a private deck with more breathtaking views of the golf course. “The expansive primary suite is one of my favorite things about this home,” Smith says, pointing to the light-filled space that combines soft, luxurious linens—custom-made in Italy—with chic touches at every turn. Each year, the focal point of the bedroom’s holiday décor is a Chanel-themed pink Christmas tree, a thoughtful gift from Smith’s friend Lana Fryman, which adds a touch of glamour to the tranquil space.
While the home’s aesthetic is undeniably captivating, Smith emphasizes that it’s really the community of Griffin Gate that makes living here truly special. “Many of us have really gotten to know each other, so we help one another and look out for our neighbors,” she shares. “It feels more like a family.”
Residents enjoy amenities like two swimming pools, tennis courts, a workout center, and Clubhouse. Smith serves on the neighborhood social committee and is a Griffin Gate board member, helping to plan some of the many events that make this community such a vibrant place to live. From poker nights to holiday parties, from happy hour every Friday and Saturday morning breakfast at the clubhouse, to UK games televised for the neighborhood to enjoy together, there is always something to experience. Residents also have access to the Marriott Griffin Gate Golf Resort & Spa, and a historic 1854 manor house, the stately Mansion at Griffin Gate. “I love to attend Music at the Mansion, and it is absolutely breathtaking during the Christmas holiday season,” Smith reveals.
Each year, Smith adds new holiday pieces to her collection, carefully editing the décor to keep it fresh and exciting. She finds joy in shopping post-holiday sales and discovering unique items to incorporate. “I love going all out for Christmas; it just feels like the perfect time to celebrate,” Smith says. From Chanel-themed trees to snowman figurines, every detail in her home reflects a deep love of the holiday season and the joy she feels in sharing it with friends and family.
2 The front porch of this luxurious Griffin Gate home exudes a jolly yet graceful charm, thanks to its meticulously curated Christmas décor. Flanking the entrance are two life-sized nutcrackers, which gained viral fame on TikTok and were a rare find. Originally solid white, homeowner Karen Smith hand-painted them with opulent gold accents, breathing new life into the whimsical figures. The lush garlands, adorned with pinecones, shimmering ribbon, and frosted greenery, were sourced from The Craft Nook in Winchester, Kentucky, who also assisted in designing the porch’s cohesive and refined holiday look. The delicate bows and frosted arrangements create a welcoming scene, combining traditional Christmas motifs with a luxe, semi-modern twist.
3 An expansive deck, overlooking the 17th hole at Marriott’s Griffin Gate Golf Club in Lexington, Kentucky, showcases a cheerful display of seasonal charm. A handcrafted grapevine reindeer pulls an enchanting red metal sleigh, beautifully adorned with wrapped gifts and lush garlands, all sourced from The Craft Nook. Vibrant poinsettias line the railing, adding rich bursts of color, while outdoor furniture is dressed in cozy holiday pillows, creating an inviting space to enjoy the view and Christmas spirit. The seamless connection between the deck and the main living room allows it to serve as a tasteful extension of the home’s interior spaces.
4 A warm and merry glow radiates from this chic living space, where tasteful Christmas décor transforms the room into a luxurious winter wonderland. The grand focal point is a tremendous Christmas tree, its branches adorned with pearl garlands and delicate ornaments sourced from My Favorite Things in Lexington. Angel wings are nestled among the ornaments, in honor of homeowner Karen Smith’s late parents, adding a deeply personal touch to the display. Above, a stunning crystal chandelier sparkles in the soft light, complementing the tree’s grandeur and enhancing the room’s cultivated feel. White and gold accents, paired with classic touches like the antique mirror and artful reindeer figurines, blend seasonal charm with timeless design.
5 This elegant kitchen combines modern luxury with timeless charm, highlighted by luxury vinyl tile flooring from Kentucky Flooring Warehouse, which flows seamlessly throughout the entire home, replacing a previous mix of different hardwoods. A stunning ZLINE stove with mixed metals and a white door serves as the culinary centerpiece, while a copper farmhouse sink from Lux 218 Kitchen, Bath and Lighting in Danville adds warmth and character. Gold-toned crystal chandeliers, quartz countertops, and a shimmering mother-of-pearl backsplash from Floor & Décor complete the look, offering a perfect blend of function and sophistication. Holiday touches, including golden Christmas trees and garland along the island, enhance the lighthearted yet refined atmosphere.
6 The main living room of this elegant home is a bright, welcoming space where smart design meets festive holiday décor. Sunlight pours through multiple glass doors, connecting the room to the expansive wraparound deck and creating a seamless, indoor-outdoor living experience. Two plush sofas from Havertys Furniture & Home Décor are arranged facing each other, establishing a cozy and intimate conversation area that is perfect for gathering with family and friends. The space is adorned with soft, neutral tones, accented by luxurious throws and pillows, giving it a comfortable yet upscale feel. Seasonal touches, including an understated yet charming Santa figure and miniature Christmas trees, infuse the room with holiday cheer without overwhelming the light and airy ambiance.
7 This view of the main living room highlights how homeowner Karen Smith reimagined the space by removing a dividing wall, creating an open, light-filled area. The whitewashed brick fireplace, converted to gas by Barnhill Chimney Company, adds a cozy focal point and a fresh, modern look. Holiday touches, including a garland on the mantel and a Christmas tree with oversized snowflakes, bring festive charm. Soft textures and thoughtful accents, like the wire trees and gold decor, contribute to the room’s inviting holiday feel.
8 The expansive primary bedroom is an inviting retreat, combining luxurious details with personal touches. Custom-made Italian sheets drape the bed in soft, inviting layers, while a cozy seating area near the glass doors allows natural light to flood the space and invites relaxation with views of the golf course from the adjoining deck. The taupe wall color provides a serene canvas, allowing a Chanel-themed pink Christmas tree—gifted by homeowner Karen Smith’s friend Lana Fryman—to stand out as a festive focal point. The gas fireplace, updated by Barnhill Chimney Company, features a chic tile surround, adding warmth and a welcoming vibe to the space.

11 In the heart of the main living room, this whitewashed fireplace creates a bright and inviting focal point. Homeowner Karen Smith refreshed the brick surround to give the space a lighter, more contemporary feel. For the holidays, the mantel is beautifully adorned with greenery and gold accents, complementing the playful tree nearby. This charming snowman-themed tree, complete with a beloved snow lady ornament that Smith has cherished for more than 20 years, brings a playful and nostalgic touch. One of Smith’s favorite pieces, a large gold ornament with the inscription “God’s got a plan, and it’s all good,” adds a meaningful accent to the mantel décor. The gas fireplace, updated by Barnhill Chimney Company, brings warmth and elegance to this snug space.

Additionally, we hold events for local schools in our venue, providing a space for educational programs and community gatherings.”
These partnerships foster a sense of community and create opportunities for collaboration and support among local residents.
