Discover Tousey House Tavern

1 The Tousey House Tavern in Burlington, Kentucky, is an elegant historic building that dates back to 1822. It has served many different purposes over the years, including a private residence, hotel, gift shop, boarding house and courthouse. Today, it stands as a beloved local restaurant, offering legendary hospitality and flavorful Southern cuisine in a charming, wellpreserved setting that blends rich history and modern comfort.

Nestled in the heart of Burlington, Kentucky, Tousey House Tavern stands as a testament to the past and a haven for the present, where history and culinary excellence converge in a setting that feels more like stepping into a cherished family home than a typical restaurant. This beloved establishment is housed in a beautifully preserved building that dates back to around 1822, offering not just a fantastic menu, but a remarkable dining ambiance that is steeped in real Southern hospitality.

“The historic experience of the Tousey House is what really sets us apart,” shared Meggie Wainscott Martin, who serves as director of operations for this exquisite gem. “You can enjoy a fabulous meal paired with great cocktails in a gorgeous circa 1822 Federal-style building that is just so rich in history! The moment you walk inside the Tousey House you just feel a sense of comfort. It truly is like walking into a loved one’s home, taking a seat in their dining room and enjoying a thoughtfully home-cooked meal.”

Indeed, from the moment guests cross the threshold, they feel enveloped by layers of warmth and character that have defined the building for more than two centuries. The interiors boast a variety of period décor, including hand-painted murals and antique furnishings, transporting diners to a bygone era, while the attentive service and thoughtfully prepared dishes make every visit a true delight.

The menu is a celebration of classic Southern cuisine, and while Tousey House is renowned for its fried chicken, Kentucky Hot Brown, and cod sandwiches, Wainscott Martin is quick to highlight her personal favorite: The halibut gratinée.

“We take a fresh piece of halibut (always cut in house) and bake it golden brown with our gratinée; a souffle of parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, artichoke hearts and crab. It is light, but filling and so flavorful!”

This September, Tousey House Tavern is celebrating Bourbon Heritage Month. As a proud stop on Northern Kentucky’s B-Line, the tavern boasts an impressive selection of over 200 bourbons, making it a mustvisit destination for bourbon enthusiasts.

“Come celebrate Bourbon Heritage Month with us and be sure to check out all the other stops on the B-Line,” invites Wainscott Martin, who says the month-long celebration is the perfect opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in the region’s rich bourbon culture, while enjoying the warm hospitality and flawless fare that Tousey House is known for.

“I always tell new guests that they simply must come back and experience Tousey in all the special experiences it has to offer,” Wainscott Martin added. “First, a candle-lit dinner in one of our elegant dining rooms dressed in white tablecloths. Second, a fun, lively, entertaining evening in the tavern area with our bar manager, Greg. Third, a light lunch on one of our beautiful, covered patios next to the bubbling water fountain, under the paddle fans. And last but not least, a Southern style Sunday brunch!”

In a world that often rushes forward, Tousey House Tavern offers guests a moment to pause, savor and connect with both yesterday and today. Whether you’re dining under the traditional “haint” blue coffered ceiling of the expansive covered porch or enjoying a special meal one of the elegant dining rooms, each visit to Tousey House invites you to slow down and enjoy the moment.

INNOVATIONS AND TRENDS FOR 2024

WSubmitted by

hen it comes to upgrading or replacing windows, homeowners today are faced with an abundance of choices, from cutting-edge technology to timeless styles that merge form and function. Leigh Ann and Jonathan Dugan, owners of Exterior Solutions & Gilkey Windows of Central Kentucky, alongside their son Tyler Brayboy, Sales Manager, have been at the forefront of this evolving industry for years. Their commitment to providing high-quality, custom-designed windows and doors has made them a go-to in the Lexington area, particularly for homeowners looking for both aesthetic appeal and long-term durability.

One of the most exciting trends in the window industry today is the push towards larger, more expansive views. Jonathan said homeowners are increasingly drawn to windows that bring the outdoors inside, creating a seamless connection between their living spaces and the natural environment.

“We’re seeing a shift away from traditional window styles with grills or grids that obstruct the view,” Tyler said. “Today’s homeowners want large, unobstructed windows that let in more light and provide expansive views.” But it’s not just about size. The materials and technology behind these windows are just as crucial. Fiberglass windows have gained popularity over the past several years for their durability and energy efficiency. Their selection of high-quality products includes, Gilkey vinyl, the Infinity by Marvin fiberglass, and the Provia fiberglass doors. Gilkey revolutionized the vinyl window industry with their 23 multi-chamber frame.

a range of high-quality doors and windows, including this stunning mahogany option, which combines traditional craftsmanship with modern security features to create a welcoming and secure entrance to your home.

The rich wood looking finish adds warmth and sophistication, making a strong first impression. Exterior Solutions & Gilkey Windows offers

1 Dining Room with Floor-to-Ceiling Windows: The dining room features floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light and offer unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. This design choice illustrates the growing preference for large, open windows that bring the outdoors inside. The black frames add a modern edge to the room’s clean, minimalist aesthetic. Exterior Solutions & Gilkey Windows specializes in creating custom window solutions that meet homeowners’ functional needs and enhance the beauty of their living spaces.

“We offer the highest quality products in Lexington, and as a quality window dealer, we stay on top of the latest innovations, like advanced Low-E glass that’s tailored to different climates,” Tyler said.

Low-E, or low-emissivity, glass has seen significant advancements in recent years. It’s designed to minimize the amount of infrared and ultraviolet light that comes through your glass without reducing the amount of natural light that enters your home. This innovation is particularly important for maintaining energy efficiency in homes, a trend that’s becoming increasingly critical as energy costs rise and environmental concerns take center stage.

As for styles, darker window frames are making a comeback, offering a striking contrast to lighter exterior colors and adding a modern touch to homes. Once overshadowed by their swinging counterparts, sliding doors are also resurgent.

“Sliding doors provide a lot of view and don’t take up as much space, which is a big plus for many of our customers,” Jonathan said.

Energy efficiency is a significant factor influencing window trends today. Homeowners are more informed and selective, looking for windows that enhance the look of their homes and contribute to long-term savings and sustainability.

“The products we offer are designed to last,” Tyler said, “and they’re finetuned to the specific needs of each home, whether it’s about maximizing solar heat gain in winter or minimizing it in summer.”

When it comes to home technology, modern windows are evolving as well. While there hasn’t been an overwhelming demand yet, the Dugan’s anticipate that interest in technological features will grow in the coming years. “We’re expecting more innovations in this area soon,” Jonathan said. “Some of these future technologies may include the ability to change the glass tint to let in more heat or light as needed.”

Selecting the right windows for different rooms in your home involves more than just picking a style you like. Functionality is key.

“For bedrooms, homeowners tend to prefer windows that allow for both air flow and emergency exit,” Jonathan said. “Large open windows that provide a view are more popular in family or living rooms. Kitchen windows that crank out instead of sliding up and down are also trending because they’re easier to operate.”

Tyler emphasized the importance of working with a reputable company when upgrading your windows. “You want to buy quality windows and understand your options. It’s important to take your time and not feel pressured to buy immediately,” he said.

Leigh Ann, Jonathan, and Tyler bring decades of experience to the table. Their company, Exterior Solutions & Gilkey Windows, is more than just a window and door replacement service—it’s a team of local specialists passionate about residential remodeling. They pride themselves on offering a comprehensive, start-to-finish solution, providing energy-efficient, customdesigned replacement doors and windows professionally installed with an eye for detail and quality. In addition to offering innovative products, they take pride in having installation crews who have been with the company for over twenty years.

Rooted in Elegance

Graceful Grounds on Elkhorn Creek

Situated on 225 acres along Elkhorn Creek near Frankfort, Kentucky, this impressive estate was completed in late 2023, seamlessly blending elements of modern luxury with timeless natural beauty and a true reverence for the land. Crafted by a dynamic collaborative team that includes builder Charlie Ayres of Ayres Custom Homes, interior designer Lesley Thomas of POIEMA Studio and garden designer Randy Sparks of Sparks Enterprises, the property showcases a variety of thoughtfully curated exterior spaces that complement the home’s architecture and celebrate the rugged elegance of its surroundings.

Central to the landscape design are a number of large limestone boulders unearthed during the home’s construction, which have been strategically placed throughout the garden beds to anchor the exterior spaces, enhancing their natural elegance and symmetry.

“The setting on Elkhorn Creek is just breathtaking,” says Sparks. “The homeowners like to entertain, so it was important for the exterior spaces to flow just right, so we selected a variety of unique plant materials, because this is not your average everyday house!”

This emphasis on flow is also evident in the large circular driveway and expansive walkways, designed to match the scale of the property. These pathways appear to meander gracefully up to the home’s main entrance in the natural limestone facade, where a mix of traditional and unique plantings creates a warm yet sophisticated vibe.

“The plantings in our garden areas are generally more casual and welcoming, with just a touch of formality,” the homeowner explains.

The garden features Blue Atlas cedar trees, a European purple beech, Oregon Blue Atlas cedar trees, a variety of different hydrangeas, Morning Light maiden grass and Pajama catmint, as well as a Japanese maple, Patriot hostas, Calgary Carpet junipers, boxwoods and taxus shrubs. The wide sidewalk and strategically placed plantings work to enhance the approach to the home, creating an inviting entrance that perfectly complements the property’s expansive setting.

“We always look forward to spending time outside, having cookouts, fellowshipping, watching and playing games, fishing and simply enjoying one another’s company,” the homeowner shares. “God has been so good to us—He gave us this land and we are truly blessed to be here and share it with family and friends.”

In fact, the entire garden was designed not just for aesthetic appeal, but also to create distinctive spaces where family and friends can gather, enjoy the property and make lasting memories.

This entire estate is a testament to the seamless integration of modern comforts and natural beauty, creating a space that reflects the beauty of Kentucky’s landscape while providing an inviting retreat for the homeowners to enjoy with family and friends for many years to come.

1 This close-up captures the delicate beauty of Bobo hydrangea blooms, their pristine white color embodying the elegance of summer. As the season transitions into fall, these blossoms will gradually adopt a rich brown hue, offering a dynamic shift that enhances the garden’s visual interest from late September through early October. This seasonal transformation underscores the thoughtful selection of plantings here, which ensures that the garden remains vibrant and luxurious throughout the year.

2 A gently curved border lends a soft, organic flow to the landscape in this deliberately-designed garden bed. At the forefront, vibrant blooms of Pajama catmint create a lovely contrast against the lush Little Lime hydrangeas. Neatly arranged Patriot hostas add texture, while dark hardwood mulch enhances the rich colors of the plantings. In the background, the deep red foliage of a Japanese maple is complemented by the structured presence of boxwood and taxus shrubs, contributing to the garden’s overall sense of sophistication.

3 The carefully designed landscape highlights the concrete drive curving gracefully from the main circle toward the garage, framed by a selection of Oregon Blue Atlas cedars and a substantial limestone boulder. In the foreground, clusters of Bobo hydrangeas also add a touch of delicate color, while a variety of other carefully selected plants include a Bracken’s Brown Beauty magnolia, Green Gem, Green Velvet, and Korean boxwoods, Runyan taxus, Firelight and Little Lime hydrangeas, Patriot hostas and Pajama catmint, creating a harmonious blend of textures and colors to enhance the property’s natural aesthetic.

4 The three-car garage, topped with a charming cupola, integrates seamlessly into the lush landscape, where Oregon Blue Atlas cedar trees raised in the Sparks Enterprises nursery stand tall alongside delicate Bobo hydrangeas. The arched garage doors echo some of the home’s repeating design elements, creating a sense of visual continuity throughout the property, while the garage itself also houses a fitness room with a glass garage door looking out toward Elkhorn Creek that floods the space with natural light and allows fresh air to flow in. Massive limestone boulders quarried on the property during construction surround the structure, while Morning Light maiden grass, heritage single stem river birch and Calgary Carpet junipers complete the serene, meticulously curated environment.

5 This angle captures another view of the expansive garden bed that gracefully wraps around the rear of the garage, showcasing a thoughtfully arranged selection of plants and natural elements. Dominating the scene are several massive limestone boulders unearthed during the house’s construction, which anchor the design and add a rugged, organic touch. Surrounding these stones are heritage single stem river birch trees, offering height and texture, while Calgary Carpet junipers and Little Lime Punch hydrangeas provide low-lying greenery. The soft, flowing texture of Morning Light maiden grass adds a dynamic contrast. In the background, the eye is drawn to delicate Bobo hydrangeas and stately Oregon Blue Atlas cedars, all contributing to the garden’s sumptuous yet low-key aesthetic.

LUXURY ON TAP

Crafting the Ultimate Home Bar

In luxury home design, few elements encapsulate real sophistication like a well-appointed home bar. These spaces serve as functional areas for crafting drinks, but also act as vital components of the home’s aesthetic. Whether nestled in a lower-level entertainment zone or showcased on the main floor, the home bar is a testament to personal style and the art of hospitality.

For starters, the placement of a home bar is crucial, and the choice largely depends on how homeowners envision their bar’s eventual use—whether as part of a game room, for example, or as more of a centerpiece for elegant gatherings—answering these questions will help ensure a finished space that really accommodates your needs.

“A bar often works well in the lower level as part of a home’s other entertaining areas, but depending on how the space will actually be used, it could also make sense to keep it on the main floor,” noted Greg Barber of Barber Cabinet Company.

Barber also emphasized that the bar design should harmonize with the home’s overall aesthetic, typically reflecting and/or complementing the style and materials already found throughout the home, whether that means rich wood paneling in a traditional setting or sleek marble for a more modern vibe.

“Generally speaking, the overall design elements should be compatible with the rest of the home’s interior spaces,” he shared.

Barber always starts the design process by sitting down with the homeowners to discuss each element of the project in detail, reviewing the plans together if the bar is going to be part of a new build, or viewing the space firsthand if it’s being added to an existing home as part of a renovation.

“We also like to look at the entire area around the bar and consider everything from TV placement to where the couches will go,” Barber added. “It’s important to see the big picture and understand how everything will flow together.”

Jack Logsdon of Whitis Cabinets also stresses the importance of considering how the bar area will fit into real life. He says taking the time to think about the details will not only add an element of convenience to the finished space, but will also enhance the bar’s functionality, making it more versatile for different types of entertaining.

“Think about how the space will ultimately be used,” Logsdon said. “Depending on the size and purpose of the bar, you may want to include an icemaker, under-counter fridge, wine cooler, or kegerator, for example.”

In fact, incorporating appliances is another critical consideration that can dramatically impact the design. Logsdon advises to plan ahead for appliances if possible, as proper planning ensures the bar operates smoothly and will integrate seamlessly with the home.

“It’s important to consider what types of appliances you would like to incorporate, so the design can include the space and enough power outlets installed in the correct location,” he shared.

When it comes to materials, wood remains a top choice. “Natural wood is still a popular option for home bars, since it can be stained to complement any existing interior,” Logsdon notes. Paired with a stone or lacquered wood top for durability, and perhaps a brass footrail, these choices add both elegance and longevity.

Ultimately, a luxury home bar is about more than just mixing drinks—it’s about crafting an experience. Whether hosting guests or enjoying a quiet evening at home, a well-designed bar blends form and function, style and substance. By carefully considering location, design and all the finer details, homeowners can create a bar that not only serves as a functional space but also enhances the overall ambiance and value of their home.

Shaping Stories Through Art and Determination

Zoe McDonald’s journey as an artist began with an early passion for creativity, nurtured by the encouragement she received in elementary school. Zoe’s talent was first recognized in second grade by her art teacher, who suggested she apply to the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA). Although she was initially waitlisted, this pivotal moment set her on a path that would shape her artistic endeavors for years to come.

“Later that night, I went home and told my parents about this encounter, and they enrolled me in one-on-one art classes,” Zoe recalled. “I applied to SCPA and placed second on the waiting list. I continued to take art more seriously after this.”

Despite facing the challenge of being waitlisted several times, Zoe never gave up on her dreams. She applied to SCPA multiple times, each year refining her skills and pushing herself further. Her determination paid off when she was finally accepted in high school, a testament to her perseverance and dedication to her craft.

Zoe’s art was a reflection of her expressive and joyful nature.

“I make art to be expressive and have fun,” she said. “A lot of my art was made to provoke a story, but I also love creating art that will bring a smile to the viewer.”

Her creative process is as dynamic as her personality, with ideas sparked by anything from nature to something she saw online.

“From there, I would choose the material that would best help me convey my idea. Usually, there was a lot of trial and error before I came up with the finished product.”

Recently, Zoe has been experimenting with 3D art, particularly enjoying working with cardboard. “Cardboard allowed me to cut out whatever shapes I desired, switching from different thicknesses of cardboard to help create different textures,” she said. This exploration of materials and textures added a unique dimension to her work, making it both engaging and tactile.

Zoe draws inspiration from a wide range of artists and movements, embracing the idea that there is something to learn from every artist. She has been particularly fascinated by Narcissa Niblack Thorne and her “Thorne Rooms,” admiring the meticulous detail in her miniatures. This appreciation for detail is evident in Zoe’s own work, especially in her memorable senior year AP 3D art series.

“I chose to create my series of 15 houses that would be fantasy-inspired and would provoke the viewer to imagine a story,” she shared, reflecting on how her decision to pursue architecture influenced this project.

As Zoe embarks on her next chapter at the University of Kentucky, where she plans to study architecture, she looks forward to continuing her artistic journey.

“I plan to continue to make art, but the art I make will be made primarily in my free time and unprompted by a teacher,” she said.

This independence would allow Zoe to explore her creativity without boundaries, and it is clear that her art will continue to evolve as she grows both as an artist and an architect.

Zoe offered sage advice for aspiring artists: “Find peers that are also artists that you can give and receive feedback from, along with supporting each other’s achievements. If you are ever in an art slump, remember it is better to create something bad than create nothing at all.”

Her words were a reminder that persistence and community were key components of success in any artistic endeavor.

1 Carlin Monohan’s luxury townhome is located in the Griffin Gate community in Lexington, Kentucky. This 2,400-square-foot, three-story townhouse includes two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and one-half bath. The brick facade and lush landscaping set the tone for the artistic and meticulously curated interior that reflects Carlin’s creative spirit.
2 The entryway to Carlin’s home is a unique blend of personal creations and curated items. The chandelier was made by Carlin herself, featuring a frame from Cowgirl’s Attic and crystal elements hanging from a 14-foot cable. The carefully arranged gallery wall showcases her love for art, making this space both welcoming and visually striking.

Carlin Monohan is a professional artist who has turned her home into a dynamic, living work of art. Located in the Griffin Gate community, a historic and thoughtfully planned residential resort in Lexington, her three-story townhouse reflects her eclectic, ultramodern style. For Carlin, home is more than just a place to live—it’s a canvas where every detail expresses her personal taste and creativity.

Griffin Gate is a community steeped in history, with roots dating back to before the Civil War, yet it seamlessly blends the old with the new. Surrounded by the rolling landscapes of Lexington’s horse farms, the neighborhood is known for its scenic golf course views, gatehouse security, and an array of amenities, including swimming pools, tennis courts, and a well-appointed clubhouse. The nearby Marriott Resort Hotel adds a touch of convenience to this already appealing setting. In this unique environment, Carlin found the perfect backdrop to transform her townhouse into a space that truly embodies her artistic vision.

Carlin’s background as a professional artist plays a significant role in how she approaches home design. Her experience with various mediums and techniques allows her to view her living space as an extension of her artistic expression.

“Art isn’t just something I do; it’s a part of who I am,” she said.

This philosophy is evident throughout her home, where each piece of decor, each color choice, is deliberate and thoughtful. Carlin treats her home as she would a canvas, layering elements until they achieve the right balance. This artistic mindset is what drives her to continuously evolve her space, ensuring that it remains as dynamic and vibrant as her own creative journey.

“I think it just evolves,” Carlin said of her design process. “I’ll see something I like and I’ll just make it for myself.”

Over the years, she has carefully crafted each room to ensure that everything aligns with her aesthetic. “There is nothing in my house that offends my eye,” she said, underscoring her commitment to detail.

The townhouse, spanning 2,400 square feet, includes two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and one-half bath. Its Williamsburg-inspired architecture fits seamlessly with Griffin Gate’s historic charm. Inside, Carlin has curated a collection of contemporary art and classic pieces, all chosen to match her distinct style.

One of the most striking aspects of Carlin’s home is her art collection, which includes expensive glass pieces and handmade bowls, many of which were gifts from friends or payments for her own work.

“These are not just objects; they’re pieces of my life,” she said, highlighting the personal connections they represent.

The outdoor spaces are equally thoughtful. The entrance, lined with fountains and lush plants, creates a welcoming atmosphere that continues throughout the property. A deck runs the entire length of the house, providing a space to relax and take in the view of a large stone bridge crossing a nearby canal.

“I used to spend a lot of time in the backyard,” Carlin recalled. “The deck runs the whole length, and the view is just incredible.”

Carlin’s studio, her favorite room, is where her creativity comes to life. The studio’s vaulted ceiling allows her paintings to stretch all the way up, creating an inspiring space.

“In the summer, I love to have the sliding glass doors open; it’s just like you’re outside,” she said, enjoying the connection between her work and the outdoors.

Since moving into Griffin Gate in 2005, Carlin has made her home a true reflection of her artistic journey and a comfortable place to live. Her advice for others looking to personalize their spaces is simple: “Turn yourself loose and have fun. You don’t need approval from other people. Do what you like.”

Carlin Monohan’s home in Griffin Gate is where art and life come together, creating a unique and vibrant space that perfectly captures who she is as an artist. In this historic community, Carlin has found a home and the ideal environment to express her creativity.

3 Above the breakfast nook hangs a mirror surrounded by birds made of forged steel, a very expensive and unique feature. This artwork adds character to the space, which Carlin has since updated with new chairs, keeping the area fresh and reflective of her evolving taste.

5 The landing area features a glass display case that houses an expensive piece of glass artwork, which Carlin received in exchange for a large mural she created. This area is a blend of light, art, and space, serving as both a gallery and a transitional space within the home.

4 The primary bedroom is anchored by a large painting by Ellen Glasgow, adding depth and a personal touch to this comfortable room. The space is designed for relaxation, offering a serene environment to unwind and take it easy.
6 This Santa Fe landscape painting is a centerpiece in the room, with additional smaller paintings on the side walls that add dimension and context. The artwork brings a piece of the Southwest into Carlin’s Kentucky home, blending different influences into her personal gallery.
7 In the dining room, Carlin’s creativity shines through the chandelier she made herself and the fruit paintings behind it. The sliding glass doors provide a view of the lush greenery outside, making this a perfect spot for entertaining or enjoying a quiet meal.
8 Carlin’s modern, clean kitchen was remodeled in 2011, embracing a minimalist aesthetic with no hardware or handles on the cabinets. The allwhite design and glass cabinets create a sleek, uncluttered look, perfect for a contemporary lifestyle.
9 Carlin spends most of her time in the front room, either sitting and watching TV or reading. This space is designed for comfort and relaxation, with ample seating and natural light streaming in from the large windows.

10 This is the studio where Carlin creates most of her artwork. The space is filled with natural light and showcases her impressive collection of paintings, some of which are displayed on the walls that stretch up to the vaulted ceiling. It’s a space designed for inspiration and creativity.

Southern Elegance and Timeless Comfort

Inside the McMahan Family Home

Photography by Walt Roycraft
1 The exterior of the McMahan home exudes classic Southern charm with its stately brick facade, welcoming front porch, and elegant columns. Its inviting seating area and classic design make it the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of iced tea while soaking in the neighborhood’s charm. Tina McMahan said, “These are the best compliments—it is exactly how we want our guests to feel!” The elegant facade and welcoming entrance set the tone for the warmth and grace found inside the home.

Tina McMahan’s home in Ashford Oaks exemplifies Southernstyle elegance while offering the warmth and comfort that invites family and friends to gather. Completed in December 2023, this 7,900-square-foot residence reflects Tina’s passion for classic architecture, blending traditional charm with modern functionality.

The McMahans have always favored the timeless appeal of Williamsburg and Colonial homes. After years of vacationing and building a home on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, they sought to bring that same style to their new Kentucky residence.

“We wanted a similar style—a more formal home than in Kiawah but not quite as formal as our previous homes,” Tina said.

The result is a beautifully designed space with an open floor plan that effortlessly accommodates large gatherings and family visits.

From the moment you arrive, the attention to detail is evident. The portecochere, both practical and elegant, offers shelter during Kentucky’s unpredictable weather and sets the tone for the refined interior. Inside, the home strikes a perfect balance between style and comfort. The family room’s mix of old and new décor feels timeless and inviting. Mark Thompson of Lexington Furniture played a crucial role in helping Tina select pieces that give the room its unique character.

“Mark was terrific in helping me select the perfect pieces for this room,” Tina said. The décor combines treasured items with new additions, creating an ageless, welcoming space perfect for relaxation and entertaining.

One of the home’s standout features is the lower-level bourbon bar, a tribute to Kentucky’s rich heritage. Crafted from stained hickory, the bar exudes warmth and character, further enhanced by Blue Dunes leathered countertops that subtly catch the light.

“The stained knotted hickory wood gives the bar a unique character,” Tina said, highlighting the Kentucky-themed space. The recreation room continues this theme, featuring a limestone fireplace and equestrian décor that create a cozy yet sophisticated space for entertaining.

Tina intentionally chose finish materials, aiming for a home that feels as if it has always been part of the landscape.

“We wanted it to look as if this home could have been built on this farm many years ago,” she said.

This vision is evident in the herringbone brick flooring in the laundry room and pool bath, which evokes the feel of an enclosed breezeway— both practical and durable for their grandchildren as they move between the pool and the house.

The pool area itself is a highlight of the home, featuring a limestone pool and hot tub that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The elevated pool deck, which required an unexpectedly tall retaining wall, offers stunning views and has become a favorite spot for the family.

“We have certainly enjoyed the outdoor space and the pool/spa this summer,” Tina shared, looking forward to many more moments in this inviting outdoor oasis.

When it came to decorating, Tina opted for a lighter, brighter palette, a departure from the darker, more traditional colors of their previous home.

“We wanted this home to have more natural light with most areas being lighter paint colors or white,” she said, adding that the color comes from accessories and furniture throughout the main rooms of the home. This approach creates a serene atmosphere filled with natural light, making the space open and welcoming.

The powder room holds special significance for Tina, as it was the first room to be completed. The wallpaper, carefully chosen and applied by Tina and her husband—a tradition they’ve maintained throughout their 39 years of marriage—adds a personal touch to the space. The custom vanity, designed by Terry Burns, perfectly captures the elegance that Tina envisioned for this intimate space.

Building a custom home often comes with challenges, and the McMahans faced their share, from unexpected structural requirements to design decisions that needed quick resolution. With the help of a talented team, including Jason Justice of Justice Builders, architect Jack Stewart, and their long-time designer, Dwayne Anderson, they navigated these challenges. They created a home that not only meets their needs but also exceeds their expectations.

“Dwayne’s input and suggestions were invaluable,” Tina said, emphasizing the importance of having a team that truly understood their vision. “Dwayne will continue working with us to ‘put the jewelry on the house,’ as he likes to say. We are currently working on solid panel interior shutters, window treatments for the front of the home, décor for the main bedroom and bath, and dining room.”

For Tina and her family, this home is more than just a place to live—it’s a space for creating memories. Whether celebrating the holidays, enjoying summer days by the pool, or simply spending time together in the spacious playroom with their grandchildren, the McMahans have designed a home that will be cherished for years to come.

2 The back porch is an extension of the McMahan’s living space, offering a seamless transition between indoor comfort and outdoor beauty. The pool and deck are built up to the main floor level, creating a cohesive outdoor area with stunning views. Whether for morning coffee or evening gatherings, this space is designed to make the most of the serene surroundings and create lasting memories.

3 The dining room blends tradition with personal touches, featuring an elegant light fixture that complements the room’s classic design. The space is further enriched by a painting of the horse Buckpasser by Tina’s late mother-in-law, Barbara McMahan. This room serves as a beautiful setting for family meals and celebrations.
4 Bright and airy, the breakfast room offers stunning views of the pool, green space, and porch area. The built-in shelving is both functional and decorative, providing space to display a collection of cookbooks and cherished items. This room seamlessly blends practicality with aesthetic appeal, making it a favored spot for casual meals and morning coffee.

5 The kitchen is a masterpiece of design, combining timeless elements with modern functionality. White cabinetry, a cherry wood island, antique brass fixtures, and honed marble countertops give the space a classic, timeless look. The use of varied drawer pulls and knobs add a bespoke feel reminiscent of a built-in china cabinet, making this space truly the heart of the home.

7 The Kentucky heritage theme continues in the lower-level recreation room, where a limestone fireplace and equestrian-themed décor bring warmth and character to the space. Leather chairs featuring equestrian snaffle bits add a unique touch that pays homage to the state’s rich horse racing tradition. This room is ideal for casual gatherings or cozy nights by the fire.

8 The lower-level bourbon bar is a true showpiece, reflecting Kentucky’s famous bourbon heritage. Crafted from stained knotted hickory wood, the bar has a unique and inviting character. The Blue Dunes leathered countertops and thoughtful lighting highlight the rich color of the bourbon, making this space perfect for entertaining or enjoying a quiet drink.

9 Rich with character, the office is finished with hickory paneling and wainscoting, providing a warm and sophisticated atmosphere. The built-in bookcase, also made of hickory, adds to the room’s stately feel. A pop of color is introduced with the wet bar, painted in Fort Pierce Green, while solid panel shutters enhance the room’s classic design.

10 The day room on the second floor offers a quiet, peaceful space for reading or relaxation. Designed as a retreat within the home, this room provides a serene atmosphere where guests or family members can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

11 Designed for both comfort and style, the family room combines treasured items with new additions to create an ageless, welcoming space. This room is ideal for relaxation and entertaining, offering a perfect blend of old and new that adds to the home’s overall charm.

Reinventing the Kentucky Farmhouse

Reinventing the Kentucky Farmhouse

Photography by Walt Roycraft

1 A striking fusion of modern elegance and rustic charm, this custom-designed residence showcases a façade adorned with Kentucky limestone and bold black Hardie siding, creating a visually compelling contrast. Reclaimed oak wood enhances the rustic appeal, featured prominently on the columns along the breezeway to the right, as well as on the custom corbels and columns framing the main entrance. Metal roofing accentuates the window awnings and breezeway, seamlessly integrating with the home’s sleek, farmhouse-chic aesthetic. The expansive layout includes a three-car garage and fitness room to the right in this view, all meticulously planned to align with the family’s lifestyle and the natural contours of the land, particularly considering its proximity to Elkhorn Creek. Also designed to maximize natural light, the main entrance opens to a double-height grand hall, with window proportions carefully calibrated to this scale. As dusk falls, the oak columns along the entrance and breezeway emit a warm, inviting glow, enhancing the home’s enchanting ambiance.

N2 A stunning centerpiece, the grand hall features a soaring double-height ceiling adorned with decorative reclaimed pine beams, evoking a timeless, old-world charm. The space is anchored by a contemporary gas fireplace, flanked by custom built-ins, with meticulously angled recessed lighting that can be independently dimmed to create the perfect ambiance. A striking chandelier from Restoration Hardware hangs above, illuminating the reclaimed oak hardwood floors sourced from Old World Timber. Adding to the room’s character is an antique library table, a cherished find from Irish Acres in Versailles, Kentucky. The expansive floor-toceiling windows offer a serene view of the rear patio and garden, and their generous scale was specifically designed to accommodate the family’s oversized Christmas tree each year. The walls are at least two-feet thick, providing a profoundly substantial feel, as well as insulation and soundproofing. The doorway to the right of the fireplace leads to the secluded primary suite, while the left doorway offers access to a study, laundry room and primary closet.

estled along the peaceful banks of Elkhorn Creek outside of Frankfort, Kentucky, this chic new farmhouse is a masterful blend of modern luxury and timeless rural charm. Spanning 225 acres of pastures, woodlands, and creek, the property offers both seclusion and proximity to town. The homeowners, who longed for a place that embodied Kentucky farm life, envisioned a home that honors traditional elements while incorporating modern amenities.

The design process began in 2019, evolving through five iterations before the final plan was chosen, a journey shaped by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Completed in August 2023, the project was rooted in the homeowners’ desire to create a space that is deeply personal and functional. “This is truly God’s beautiful property,” the homeowner reflected. “And we want to remain true to the land.”

Every detail of the home’s design was meticulously considered to enhance the family’s lifestyle. “We were also quite conscious of how this home was oriented on the property and along the creek,” explained interior designer Lesley Thomas of POIEMA Studio. “Every window view was deliberately chosen to highlight various aspects of the surrounding landscape.”

At the heart of the home, the grand hall showcases a double-height ceiling with reclaimed pine beams, exuding a rustic yet elegant atmosphere. Stonemason Charles Dewar played a crucial role in achieving the desired Old World aesthetic, carefully blending stone with perfectly colored mortar to create a sense of timelessness. The kitchen, featuring custom cabinetry painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Cast Iron” and accented with walnut-stained wood, balances aesthetic appeal with practical functionality.

The primary bedroom suite includes a tranquil space known affectionately as the “Jesus Room,” where the homeowners enjoy peaceful views of Elkhorn Creek during morning prayer. “When designing a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional, it really helps to understand exactly how the family works and functions within the home,” Thomas added. “I always strive to gain a deep understanding of what is most important to them.”

Other features of the home reflect the homeowners’ focus on comfort and practicality. The fitness room, with its glass garage door, allows natural light to flood the space and can be opened to let in fresh air during workouts. The grandchildren’s room, with custom-built queen-sized bunk beds designed by Thomas, is a favorite retreat, with the beds also featuring hidden compartments and individual reading lights.

Reflecting on the project, builder Charlie Ayres of Ayres Custom Homes shared, “It was a truly wonderful experience to work with the homeowners and designer Lesley Thomas. This was a large project, but they were so well organized that it was flawlessly executed despite the challenges we faced during COVID.” He added, “It was also exciting to work with so many specialty products, high-end finishes, and first-rate materials.”

From the grand hall to the couple’s private prayer space, every inch of this Frankfort farmhouse is a testament to the careful planning and love that went into its creation. The home reflects the homeowners’ deep connection to the land and their commitment to preserving its beauty for future generations, all while embracing the everyday comforts of modern living.

3 Exuding craftsmanship and historical charm, the elegant dining room is set against the commanding backdrop of the home’s grand hall. The space is defined by its thick limestone walls, lending a sense of permanence and solidity that speaks to the home’s enduring design. Through the arched doorway on the left, one can glimpse the hallway leading to the keeping room and kitchen, where a stunning barrel-vaulted ceiling is clad in reclaimed barn wood, adding a rustic yet refined touch. To the right, a custom-built China cabinet by Philip Champ of Champs Kitchen Designs provides a beautiful display space, while the two, interior steel-framed windows, originally sourced from an old schoolhouse by Anything Goes Trading Company in Boaz, Kentucky, add another layer of character. Interior designer Lesley Thomas carefully restored these windows, having them freshly powder-coated and fitted with new glass, ensuring they seamlessly integrate with the open-concept design by maintaining sightlines to the kitchen. The solid oak dining table and chairs, a cherished gift from friends who downsized, were initially brought over from England, enhancing the room’s rich narrative and sense of historic charm.

4 The exquisite kitchen is a harmonious blend of modern functionality and timeless design, meticulously oriented to offer sweeping views of the surrounding farm. Thoughtfully designed for family life, it also offers ample room for grandkids and pets, blending modern functionality with old-world charm. A stained walnut island contrasts beautifully with cabinetry in Sherwin Williams’ “Cast Iron,” a chic greenish-grey, while a Restoration Hardware chandelier hangs from reclaimed wooden beams, enhancing the rustic vibe. The farm’s logo, designed by Lesley Thomas, is embedded above the stove as a keystone, while high-end appliances from Thermador, a farmhouse sink with a Brizo faucet, and durable granite-quartz countertops in a leathered finish complete the space, complementing the home’s refined yet rustic elements.

“This is truly God’s beautiful property,”
“And we want to remain true to the land.”

5 Located just off the grand hall and within the same wing as the primary suite, the beautifully appointed study exemplifies a refined blend of comfort and sophistication. The space is painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Arctic Seal” for the darker walls and “Swiss Coffee” for the ceiling, creating a calming yet elegant atmosphere. A striking reclaimed wooden beam stretches across the window headers, adding a rustic touch that provides continuity with the home’s overall design. The double-height ceiling enhances the room’s expansive feel, while custom shelving and a wall desk, expertly crafted by Philip Champ of Champs Kitchen Designs, provide functional style.

6 The primary bedroom is a serene retreat, exuding understated elegance with its double-height bead-board ceiling and gracefully arched elements, which echo the design motifs seen throughout the home. A cozy nook, featuring two plush lounge chairs, is framed by expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook Elkhorn Creek, creating a tranquil space affectionately known as the “Jesus Room,” where the homeowners begin their mornings in prayer. The built-in shelving seamlessly integrates storage with style, while the antique rocking chair—a cherished family heirloom—adds a touch of history and warmth, harmoniously blending old and new in this thoughtfully designed space.

7 Exuding a sense of warmth and continuity, the primary bath boasts walnut-stained wood accents on the cabinets that seamlessly integrate with the home’s overall design. The “his and hers” sink cabinets, painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Arctic Seal,” offer a chic, modern contrast against the rich wood tones. The travertine tile floors provide a neutral yet elegant foundation, complementing the custom Kentucky blue subway tile in the shower, which is handmade with a unique, irregular appearance that adds another touch of artisan craftsmanship. Arched mirrors above the sinks echo another of the home’s recurring design elements, further enhancing the cohesive and meticulously planned aesthetic, while a doorway leads to a spacious walk-in closet just beyond the shower.

8 A lively and cleverly arranged space, the grandchildren’s room perfectly combines comfort and utility. The custom-built, queen-sized bunk beds were designed by Lesley Thomas and Terry Linville, following the dream of the homeowners for their growing number of grandchildren. The beds feature hidden compartments, ample storage and individual reading lights that add another layer of coziness. The arts and crafts table, with ample drawers on both sides, provides an ideal setting for creative activities, while the comfortable sofa and stools from Pottery Barn enhance the room’s inviting atmosphere. An arcade game introduces a fun, nostalgic element, while additional bookshelves (not pictured) house a diverse collection of traditional board games, making this room a cherished spot for family fun and creativity.

9 This inviting covered patio exudes a sense of rustic elegance, featuring textured Bluestone pavers underfoot and columns crafted from reclaimed barn wood salvaged from the property, adding another layer of authenticity to the design. Positioned near the grandkids’ room, rec room and guest suite, this inviting outdoor area offers the perfect setting for family gatherings, complete with a comfortable sofa, television and porch swing., The primary suite is just visible in the background and to the right in this view, with its distinctive metal-roofed Jesus Room, while the double-height central section of the home was built using Kentucky limestone and designed to welcome natural light into the grand hall through the expansive windows, including one that was specially selected to frame the family’s oversized Christmas tree. Nearby, a gas fire table on the rear patio offers another cozy spot for enjoying crisp mornings and cool evenings.

10 Adjacent to the kitchen, the relaxed yet sophisticated family room serves as an ideal hub for family time and entertainment. The space connects to a hallway that extends toward the garage and fitness room, where reclaimed wood beams and a brick walkway evoke a sense of timeless, Old World craftsmanship. The cabinetry, finished in Benjamin Moore’s “Admiral Blue,” adds a bold contrast, while the soft grey ceiling imparts a sense of warmth and intimacy. To the right, a dry bar equipped with a beverage fridge enhances the room’s functionality, making it a perfect setting for enjoying a game or other casual gathering.

Amid the breathtaking landscapes of Kentucky’s Red River Gorge, where the Daniel Boone National Forest unfolds in all its splendor, a unique blend of creativity, adventure, and family legacy thrives. Red River Gorgeous, the area’s pioneering cabin and treehouse rental company, and the innovative Canopy Crew offer an unparalleled experience for those seeking to connect with nature. Their story is one of passion, imagination, and a deep commitment to preserving the forest’s natural beauty.

Red River Gorgeous, established over 30 years ago by the Dourson family, has become synonymous with adventure and tranquility in the Gorge. What began as a few timberframe cabins has blossomed into a diverse collection of unique accommodations, from fully equipped large cabins to secluded off-grid retreats. At the heart of this evolution is a mission that has remained steadfast: to offer spaces that inspire connection, enjoyment, and a profound appreciation for the Red River Gorge.

Today, the company is co-owned by Aaron and Amy Dourson and Frances Kroner, who also serves as the current Director of Operations. The business is more than just a company; it’s a lifelong project steeped in family values and a deep-seated love for the land. “I love the flexibility, challenge, and deep way that I can invest myself into a lifelong project by creating and growing a small family business,” says Amy, reflecting on what drives her commitment to Red River Gorgeous.

The Canopy Crew, founded in 2013 by Django Kroner, takes the experience of the Gorge to new heights—literally. Django’s vision began in the backyard of Red River Gorgeous, where he built his first treehouse as a personal retreat. As he lay in a hammock high above the ground, a realization dawned on him: he wanted to share this unique perspective of the forest with others.

This passion led to the creation of “Sylvan Float,” the first treehouse built specifically for guests. From this humble beginning, Canopy Crew has expanded to include ten uniquely designed treehouses, with another, “Golden Teacher,” currently under construction. The designs have evolved to include both tree-based and cliff-based structures, each crafted with a blend of creativity and engineering that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible.

“A treehouse is a place to let your imagination run wild,” Frances said, echoing the spirit that drives Red River Gorgeous and Canopy Crew. Each treehouse is designed to harmonize with its environment, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the canopy of trees and the surrounding natural beauty.

Both Red River Gorgeous and Canopy Crew are deeply committed to environmental stewardship. Their minimally invasive building practices aim to preserve the natural environment, and sustainability is at the core of their operations. Over the past five years, they’ve been updating their electrical systems to solar power, installing over 40kW of Solar PV Arrays at three locations. These 112 commercial-grade solar panels are estimated to offset the carbon equivalent of planting 20,000 trees—a testament to their dedication to preserving the Gorge’s pristine beauty for future generations.

The companies also practice sustainable water sourcing, waste management, and landscaping, going so far as to recycle not only their materials but also those of their guests. This commitment to sustainability, though often challenging and less convenient, is crucial to their operations and philosophy.

Guests who choose to stay in one of Canopy Crew’s treehouses are in for an adventure like no other. Each treehouse is custom-built to complement its unique landscape, whether a cliffsuspended retreat like “Cliff Dweller” or the whimsical “Tradewinds Treehouse,” complete with a space net climber, hot tub, and slide. For those seeking a pirate ship experience suspended in the trees, the “Grey Dreamer” and “Sky Dancer” treehouses provide the perfect escape.

“We love to offer ideas for guests to better explore the area,” Frances said. With a local team on site, there’s always someone available to ensure that every guest’s stay is immersive and unforgettable.

Building treehouses that blend seamlessly into the natural environment is no small feat. The learning curve for each new design is steep, requiring a combination of climbing, rigging, and various construction styles. But for Amy, the rewards far outweigh the challenges.

“The moments which have been most rewarding for me are when a guest arrives a bit unsure if they are in over their heads with their choice to stay in one of our treehouses or off-grid cabins and when they leave, they’re so glad they came and are energized and enlivened by the experience,” Amy said.

The story of Red River Gorgeous and Canopy Crew is one of innovation, family, and a profound respect for the natural world. Together, they offer more than just a place to stay—they provide a gateway to experiencing the Red River Gorge in a thrilling and deeply meaningful way.

4 Grey Dreamer and Sky Dancer’s Deck with Space Net: The Grey Dreamer and Sky Dancer treehouses create a whimsical pirate ship experience suspended in the treetops. Guests can relax on the space net, which serves as a floating deck perfect for taking in the forest views or simply lounging among the trees.
6 Cliff Dweller from Above: Cliff Dweller, one of Canopy Crew’s most breathtaking treehouses, is dramatically suspended from the cliffs of Red River Gorge. Seen from above, this stunning structure blends seamlessly with its rugged surroundings, offering guests a unique experience in the treetops.
