The Importance of Backup Power Solutions

TThere’s a thin line between civilized society and chaos… And that line is electricity!”

That’s a quote form Martin Short in the TV series Only Murders in the Building, and while he is admitedly a bit dramatic, the fact is we rely on electricity for almost every aspect of our lives, so when the grid fails it can dramatically upset day, week, etc. In fact, the New York Times even reported last year that the dividing line between middle class and upper class is owning a backup power generator!

As our nation’s utility grid is aging and in disrepair, power outages are becoming more frequent and lasting longer in some areas. So, what are some good options for homeowners to provide electricity for themselves when the grid is down?

First, it’s important to understand that there are two main types of back -up power generators: An automatic generator that is permanently fixed to the home and hard wired in, or a portable generator with temporary wiring.

An automatic generator is typically a whole house generator, meaning it can power your entire home when the grid is down. This type of generator usually uses natural gas or propane for fuel and is installed by a licensed professional who carries licenses in both electrical and HVAC.

These generators are the best solution to give homeowners real comfort and peace of mind when the grid is down, and it offers a very safe and reliable form of backup power. Best of all, it’s completely automatic, and the homeowner will barely even know that there is a power outage! It’s also important to note that when running on a generator, you should be conservative with your power usage, because while a generator can power your whole home, it can’t power everything at once.

A portable generator is a smaller option with less capacity, and would not be considered “whole house.” In most cases, this option will only run a few items, such as the furnace, microwave and some lights. These generators are usually gasoline or diesel fuel powered, and it is very important to consider where they are located to keep exhaust fumes from coming into the home. This option is usually for the DIY person who is very handy and has experience with electricity and is comfortable with large gas engines.

Keep in mind that portable generators can be dangerous, because of exhaust issues and refilling the gasoline while keeping the generator running. Most injuries from backup power generators come from portable generators, so use caution if this is an option you plan to explore.

When installing any generator, it is also important to only work with a licensed professional. Since a whole house generator requires both high voltage electrical connections and natural gas connections, it is ideal to work with a contractor who is licensed in both HVAC and electrical.If the contractor is only licensed in one of the trades, they are likely illegally installing the other trade work or sub-contracting that work out, and sub-contracts on a install like this can lead to finger pointing if there is a problem down the road. Make sure to work with a contractor who is Generac service certified, as this is the highest level of generator certification available, and it means the service techs have passed a factory certification class and meet industry best practices.

Also, carefully consider the location where a generator will be permanently installed. Ideally, it should be close to the home’s gas and electric meters, so it will be easy to connect. Because generators have a gas engine, they are a little loud, so we typically don’t want them installed under a bedroom window. Most modern brands of backup power generators are WIFI connected and come with remote monitoring, so you always know that your generator is prepared for the next outage.

A whole house backup power generator is definitely an investment—depending on how big of a generator you need, a fully installed automatic generator can range between $10,000 and $20,000—but it will also add resale value to your home. And when they are well maintained, a high quality generator can last up to 20 years or more… Not to mention you will be the envy of the entire neighborhood during the next power outage!

One of the foremost trends highlighted by Miller is the increased adoption of energy-efficient roofing materials. These materials lower utility bills and extend the roof’s lifespan by reducing the thermal stress on structural components.

“Reflective surfaces are making a significant impact this year,” he said. “These materials are designed to reflect more sunlight, reducing cooling costs and extending the roof’s lifespan by minimizing heat absorption. This trend is a boon for environmentally conscious homeowners looking to decrease their energy usage and carbon footprint.”

Adding color and eco-friendliness to roofs is another trend gaining momentum. These environmentally responsible choices are increasingly popular as they enhance a home’s exterior and contribute to its energy efficiency and environmental footprint.

“Homeowners are increasingly seeking roofing options that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible,” he said. “Options such as green roofs, which incorporate live vegetation, and solar panels are particularly popular, combining visual appeal with substantial environmental benefits.”

Technological integration is transforming roofing systems, making them more innovative and efficient. This includes the use of advanced materials and smart systems that adapt to weather conditions, optimize energy usage, and improve home comfort.

“The use of solar shingles has transitioned from a luxury to a necessity for many,” Miller added. “These shingles help homeowners achieve energy independence and are complemented by integrated roof monitoring systems that facilitate maintenance and repair, ensuring durability and efficiency.”

The aesthetic aspect of roofing is also evolving. Miller points out the trend toward minimalist and modern designs favoring clean, streamlined rooflines. These sleek profiles are visually appealing and complement contemporary homes’ architectural elements, enhancing overall curb appeal.

“Nowadays, homeowners prefer a sleek look that complements the modern architectural styles,” he adds. “Additionally, there is a growing preference for bold colors and mixed material combinations, which allow homeowners to customize their roof appearances to better match their personal style and the architectural character of their homes.”

Durability remains a critical factor in choosing roofing materials, with metal roofs standing out for their long lifespan and minimal maintenance needs. Additionally, their ability to withstand extreme weather conditions makes them ideal for areas prone to severe weather.

“Metal roofing is popular due to its durability and variety of styles that can suit any home exterior,” Miller said. “Synthetic roofing materials are also on the rise, offering the look of traditional materials such as slate or wood shake but with better fire resistance and less maintenance.”

Green roofing continues to be a significant trend, driven by increasing environmental awareness among homeowners. These roofs enhance a home’s exterior and offer functional benefits such as improved insulation and natural water filtration.

“The ecological benefits of green roofs, including their ability to improve air quality and reduce urban heat, make them an excellent choice for eco-friendly roofing solutions,” Miller said.

Nearby, one of Jeanne’s handcrafted crystal art towers shimmers with iridescent carnival glass that catches and refracts the light in a subtle kaleidoscope of colors. A repurposed old mailbox, crowned here with a quaint birdhouse, adds a touch of rustic charm, while a stately bronze horse sculpture brings an artistic nod to classical form. The lush foliage of hostas and broad, dramatic leaves of elephant ears frame this engaging vignette, creating a composition that marries the natural and creative spirits of this garden sanctuary.

estled within the heart of Lexington’s city limits lies a private oasis—a lush, intimate garden meticulously nurtured over two decades by Jeanne and Scott Crosby. This isn’t just a garden; it’s a 60-foot square canvas where art and nature intertwine, a secluded haven that the couple has transformed from a flat, grassy backyard into a verdant sanctuary.

“I really enjoy the way our garden filters out noise from the street, creating a calming sanctuary,” Scott shared. “Everyday cares recede and we get to bask in the serenity it brings.”

The garden’s story began 24 years ago, when the Crosbys moved into a home shaded by two monumental silver maples. These majestic trees, affectionately named the King and Queen, became cornerstones of the garden’s design. With their cooling canopy, they create a microclimate that’s a welcome respite from Kentucky’s summer heat, while their company calls for regular care and preservation by professional arborists.

“We both absolutely love trees—especially big old ones like our King and Queen,” shared Jeanne. “They helped shape the entire garden, which is completely in shade and comes with its own unique set of challenges, but without them the garden would not have the ambiance, character and shade we love so much.”

Jeanne is Atlanta-born and raised, while Scott originally hails from Walterboro, South Carolina. Over the years, they have invested much passion and artistry into every corner of this intimate space, ultimately creating a colorful retreat that mirrors the vibrancy of their home’s interior. Splashes of blue, yellow and red accent the garden and the interior spaces, reflecting the couple’s love for bright, engaging hues.

Despite challenges posed by a steep incline leading down into the garden and the pervasive roots of the maples, the couple ingeniously adapted, incorporating decking and potted plants to overcome some of the gardening constraints. Elephant ears along the fence, iris and coleus in the pond, white Angel Wing begonias and lime green hostas peeking out here and there create a spectrum of textures and subtle colors that come to life in the dappled shade.

“My mother truly loved gardening and flowers,” Jeanne shared. “We always had a beautiful back yard when I was growing up, and today all four of my sisters have also taken that on as a hobby of sorts.”

Jeanne’s artistic touch is evident in the whimsical art piece towers scattered throughout the garden, crafted from crystals and vintage cut glass—a reflection of her affinity for the allure of vintage finds. Boxwood wreaths gracing the shed doors, accented with a steeple and X’s to lend an equestrian flair, are also a nod to her past as a natural horsemanship instructor. Scott, an artist and former welder by trade, contributes his craftsmanship with a variety of creations, including cast cement sculptures in the garden and hammered copper cross jewelry that he sells in an Etsy shop called Coppertown Crosses.

Each pathway and nook tells its own story, from monumental natural sandstone steps leading up into the side yard, to an organic wooden bench found while traveling in North Carolina—each piece adds a narrative thread to the garden’s ever-evolving tale. The addition of a dogwood tree, another symbol of native beauty, complements the maples’ grandeur, while the ponds are home to a number of flashing goldfish, adding a dynamic element to this living work of art.

As visitors traverse the pea gravel and flagstone paths, they encounter Jeanne’s signature crystal towers and Scott’s cast cement sculptures, just a few of the treasures that punctuate the foliage. Every turn reveals a new scene: a lion’s head sculpture set against a backdrop of latticework, a whimsical dragonfly hanging over the pond, or a secluded bench inviting quiet reflection.

“We make a really great team,” Jeanne said. “We both have an artistic eye and work well together—I often come up with new plans, then Scott helps make those dreams a reality, also handling most of the construction and demolition.”

The Crosby’s garden is a testament to their belief that outdoor rooms should be treated with the same reverence as those located inside the home. And it’s a place where every piece holds meaning and every plant is carefully chosen to thrive in the shade of the King and Queen silver maples. In this urban oasis, the outside world fades away, leaving only the rustle of leaves, the glint of sunlight through crystal, and the joy of discovering a living tapestry that has grown not just from the soil, but from the soul.

2 Descending the steps from the deck—all of which was hand-built by owner Scott Crosby—this view captures the essence of the garden’s peaceful allure, where dappled sunlight filters through the mature trees, casting a serene glow on the plantings, including a collection of hostas that range from miniature to majestic. The garden’s journey is overseen by the sturdy Adirondack chairs nestled on a lower landing, offering a favorite retreat spot for Jeanne and Scott to overlook the lush outdoor spaces. Pineapple finials stand guard atop the staircase railing, while a pea gravel path inlaid with flagstone steps offers a resting spot for the eyes and a choice: to wander left or right, each turn promising new delights. Along the path, vibrant red calladium weaves a thread of continuity through the garden’s canvas, while pristine white baby wing begonias gleam in the shade, their brightness offering a striking contrast. The ponds—home to four varieties of gleaming goldfish—serve as living, moving elements of the landscape, while to the left another expanse opens up—a 13-square-foot entertainment deck. Also crafted by Scott, it has seating for six and overhead lights invite evening gatherings in this shaded haven.

3 In the Crosby’s garden, every spring breathes new life as houseplants find their seasonal home back out on the deck, which is itself a testament to Scott Crosby’s talented craftsmanship and love for working with his hands. Among these, a variegated canna lily, gifted by one of Jeanne’s sisters, radiates amidst the foliage. Its neighbors, a purple variegated Wandering Jew and a stately bird’s nest fern perched in the elevated cobalt blue pot, are a symphony of texture, while below, red and yellow tuberous begonias can be seen, along with the broad leaves of a macho fern, creating a tapestry of vibrant and verdant hues. The entire scene is watched over by the cheerful faces of sunflowers, captured in Jeanne Crosby’s vibrant artwork, the same artwork echoed on the decorative pillow seen here. Each plant, each brushstroke, tells the story of the Crosby’s dedication to their garden—a living gallery of nature and nurture.

4 This enchanting nook is anchored by the stately presence of what the Crosbys have named the Queen Tree, a giant silver maple whose branches stretch protectively over the garden. Below, a lush underplanting of white baby wing begonias, blue angel hostas, and Kimberly Queen ferns creates a tapestry of texture and subtle color. The variegated ajuga groundcover spreads a rich tapestry beneath the foliage, adding depth and diversity to the garden floor. Architectural interest is introduced through intricate metal latticework on the fence, which frames a lion’s head sculpture, bestowing a regal touch to the tranquil scene. To the right in this view, a large aluminum chandelier adds an air of grandeur hanging over the deck where strings of lights also dance. The Crosbys treat each outdoor ‘room’ with the same care and consideration as an indoor space, ensuring that every corner of their garden is inviting and well-appointed.

5 A serene stone angel, draped in cascading tendrils of Creeping Jenny, stands as a sentinel amidst the surrounding foliage, embodying the true spirit of the garden. This effervescent trailing plant softens the contours of the planter, creating a feeling of ethereal grace. The harmonious interplay of sculpture and plant life adds a layer of visual interest and infuses the space with a sense of peaceful contemplation, making her a treasured addition to this living mosaic of garden delights.

6 In this tranquil corner of the garden, a gentle waterfall spills over moss-laden boulders into a serene pond where glimmering goldfish frolic in an idyllic habitat. Towering irises and two varieties of hostas provide a lush backdrop to the scene, their foliage contrasting with the fine fronds of asparagus fern and the trailing vivacity of Creeping Jenny. A stone pagoda adds an element of Far Eastern charm, while water bamboo stands sentinel at the water’s edge. Real moss, introduced by the Crosbys, thrives on natural boulders, merging the handcrafted with the organic. A cast cement sculpture—another creative output from Scott—peeks from behind the bamboo, joining one of Jeanne’s signature whimsical towers—crafted here from blue crystal and cut-glass treasures sourced from various vintage stores—that sparkles with the play of light through the leaves.

7 This charming garden oasis seamlessly blends vibrant florals and lush greenery to create an inviting tableau visible from this well-appointed deck. A striking assembly of potted plants reside here, including the fiery hues of red and yellow tuberous begonias, a hanging macho fern and a bird’s nest fern in a large, cobalt blue vase, complemented by the subtle variegated foliage of Tradescantia zebrina, also known as Wandering Jew, which flanks the stairs that lead from the deck down into the garden proper. This storybook setting is made complete with a rustic table set with cobalt blue chair accents, inviting one to sit and bask in nature’s tranquil beauty. As the eye is drawn through the wooden picket gate to the cottage-style shed topped with a steeple in a nod to Kentucky horse country, with gently bubbling ponds beyond, the garden reveals itself in layers, each step uncovering new details— from the delicate balance of the water features to the strategic placement of statues, stones and artwork—that can only be fully appreciated as one meanders along its winding paths.

8 The dance of light and shadow plays across natural sandstone steps that lead to the front of the home—a pathway that was born from necessity and transformed into a place of beauty. These steps, a later addition to the garden, were laid to reclaim the land from erosion, with a friend’s expertise ensuring proper drainage, terracing and the installation of sturdy retaining walls. The filigree window is a gateway to the dwelling’s lower level, while one of Jeanne Crosby’s gorgeous blue crystal pieces glints amongst the foliage. Flanking the ascent, white Angel Wing begonias intermingle with the grandeur of banana plants and Elephant Ears, their immense leaves arching skyward. A Japanese maple adds a delicate reddish-purple hue, complemented by surrounding caladiums. Completing the scene, hostas and two charming picket fences— found at an antique store in Georgia—frame the entry to the stairwell.

s we embrace the outdoors as an extension of our living spaces, the concept of the outdoor kitchen has been elevated from a mere barbecue corner to a symbol of luxury and sophistication. In the realm of high-end homes, these culinary retreats are meticulously designed to not only complement the landscape, but to offer a seamless blend of functionality and luxury. With an emphasis on bespoke materials, advanced technology and architectural integration, luxury outdoor kitchens are redefining the art of entertaining and cooking in the embrace of nature.

“The popularity of outdoor living has really expanded in recent years, and outdoor kitchens are a huge part of that growing trend,” shared Michael Snowden of H2O Designs. “The goal is to enjoy being outside, without being totally exposed to the elements.”

An important first step in crafting a luxury outdoor kitchen is to ensure it achieves architectural harmony with the home itself and its natural surroundings. Designers often take cues from the home’s existing style, extending interior themes to the outdoors to create a cohesive look and feel. The layout should optimize flow and functionality, while maximizing the natural beauty of the environment. This might mean positioning the kitchen to capture stunning sunset views or integrating it with a poolside or garden area for a seamless entertainment space.

Just be sure to check references and avoid cutting corners—it’s always better to do a big project in multiple phases than to do it all at once, but poorly.

“If you don’t have the right foundation, everything crumbles,” Snowden said.

To design a functional outdoor kitchen, he also says it’s important to think about placement.

“When cooking outside, its typically best to remain close to your indoor kitchen—you don’t want to have to walk all the way around the pool, for example,” he shared. “We also take other elements into account during the design process, like where the sun sets and which way the wind typically blows.”

Of course, the choice of materials is also pivotal - not only for design and aesthetics, but also for durability and maintenance. High-quality stainless-steel appliances are favored for their resilience and sleek appearance. However, the truly opulent outdoor settings often feature custom cabinetry crafted from exotic woods like teak or ipe, known for their moisture and insect resistance, which are then treated to preserve their rich colors and textures against the elements.

Countertops in luxury outdoor kitchens are often designed to captivate and provide a functional workspace. Prized for their durability and innate elegance, materials like granite, quartzite and bluestone are frequently chosen to anchor outdoor spaces. Each slab of stone boasts a unique pattern, guaranteeing that every space is truly one-of-a-kind. Complemented by bespoke lighting arrangements, these countertops do more than merely tolerate the demands of outdoor culinary activities— they elevate the aesthetic of the entire cooking area, making meal prep feel more like an art form.

“As for amenities, the possibilities are virtually endless,” Snowden shared. “Directional fans, remote-controlled screens, radiant heaters, sinks and dishwashers, refrigerators and coolers, grills of all kinds, traditional ovens, pizza ovens and rotisserie ovens—low voltage lighting, audio systems, fire and water features have all come a long way—you name it, we can probably do it!”

A grill master himself, Snowden also owns a BBQ business and says he even offers an outdoor kitchen “ribbon cutting” package for clients to invite friends over to enjoy a cooking demonstration followed by a feast when the project is complete.

Technological integration is also crucial, with modern outdoor kitchens often featuring a variety of smart home technology. This allows chefs to easily control appliance settings via smartphone, seamlessly adjust lighting, or play music through integrated sound systems. This technology not only adds a whole new level of convenience, but also enhances the overall cooking and entertainment experience.

Of course, the pinnacle of luxury in outdoor kitchen design lies in the personalization of a space. For discerning clients, this customization is key, and can range from bespoke grill covers embroidered with family crests, to hand-painted tiles depicting local flora or fauna on a backsplash. Even the choice of furnishings and decor can be uniquely tailored, with designer outdoor furniture that reflects each homeowner’s style and enhances the overall dining experience.

Carlin Monohan’s artistry is woven into the fabric of her life story—a tale of unexpected discoveries and boundless creativity. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Carlin has called Kentucky home for the past 60 years, establishing herself as a formidable presence in the local art scene.

It was at the age of 26—during a summer course at Bellarmine University— that she stumbled upon her true calling. “The moment Bob Lockhart told me I was exceptionally good, I felt as if a new dimension had opened up for me,” Carlin recalled, referring to her instructor’s pivotal encouragement. From that point, Carlin’s life took a vivid turn towards a future painted in broad strokes of passion and persistence.

Carlin’s artistic repertoire is impressively diverse, encompassing watercolors, oil paints, pen and ink, pencils, and even three-dimensional forms such as furniture and murals. Her philosophy? “I’ll paint anything that doesn’t move.” This playful yet profound statement captures her spirited approach to art. Whether sketching a quiet landscape or designing an unconventional sculpture, Carlin imbues each piece with a part of her soul.

Carlin describes her artistic journey as one marked by an almost obsessive dedication: “When I start a project, it’s like the world outside fades away. I am consumed by the colors, the textures, and the form until it’s complete.” This dedication has helped her craft evolve, pushing her to explore various mediums and subjects. Her versatility ranges from the delicacy of watercolor to the boldness of oil, from intricate pen illustrations to robust furniture pieces.

In Louisville, Carlin’s reputation as a fearless and tenacious artist began to take root. “I started small, but as more people saw my work, the commissions began to grow,” she explained. “In art, I found there were no restrictions—only possibilities.” This mindset has allowed her to take on projects that many would find daunting, further solidifying her status in the art community.

Her drive and innovation are inspired in part by Helen Van Wyk, whose books and teachings on painting techniques have significantly influenced her. “Helen taught me that technique is like handwriting—it’s personal and distinctive,” Carlin said. “That’s something I carry with me every time I pick up a brush or a tool.”

Despite her successes and community connections, Carlin often describes herself as a loner, for whom art serves as both companion and dialogue with the world. “In my studio, surrounded by my works, I’m never truly alone. My art keeps me company,” she said.

Nestled on 15 tranquil acres in Lexington, the Bowden home stands as a monument to modern living and timeless design. Adam and Lindsay Bowden, along with their three children, have created more than just a home; they have sculpted a family retreat and refuge.

“Our previous home was built in 2013 and incorporated darker wood throughout, so we really wanted to brighten things up in our new space,” Lindsay shared. “We just moved in last July and absolutely love it!”

In the sphere of upscale residential properties, the Bowden residence distinguishes itself, encapsulating a design ethos where functionality coalesces seamlessly with aesthetics. The acreage surrounding this striking new build has been carefully landscaped to enhance privacy, while the home’s exterior itself is an exercise in thoughtful architecture, inspired by the homes of coastal New England.

“Adam is originally from Maine, so we wanted a home with a New England flair, and that’s where we drew inspiration during the design process,” Lindsay revealed. “We also really love the privacy we have now and the additional space it gives our family.”

Using natural hand-hewn stone on the façade turned out to be a happy accident of sorts during construction due to supply chain issues, while Pennsylvania bluestone pavers on the front porch, as well as on the morning porch and rear veranda give the home an added luxe feel, providing a dignified transition from lush outdoor surroundings to carefully crafted interiors.

Remote-controlled screens on the rear veranda and morning porch also extend the usability of the main outdoor living spaces. The addition of a swimming pool and pool house that is complete with a small kitchen and full bath mirrors the main house’s attention to detail, offering a self-contained retreat for relaxation and family fun.

Inside, the design philosophy centers on clean lines and functional elegance. The main living spaces are defined by abundant natural light and unadorned windows, except in the primary bedroom where privacy takes precedence. This deliberate choice in window treatments allows an unobstructed appreciation of the estate’s panoramic views.

Situated just off the entryway, the multi-level staircase stands as a statement piece—a single, floating steel construction that exemplifies the home’s commitment to modernity and minimalist design, creating a sense of visual continuity throughout the space. In the serene hills of Frankfort, there’s a sanctuary where the colors of nature come to life—the Butterfly Greenhouse at Wilson Nurseries. Open from the warm days of June to the gentle chill of early October, this place is a celebration of Kentucky’s native butterflies. Here, Monarchs, painted ladies, and various swallowtail species dance through the air, their flight paths weaving through a meticulously landscaped haven that’s more than just a visual spectacle—a critical hub for butterfly conservation.

Chris Taylor, the Human Resources Manager at Wilson Plant Co., invites guests to immerse themselves in this living exhibit.

“Surround yourself with the native butterflies of Kentucky. Our butterfly greenhouse isn’t just a viewing space—it’s a vibrant ecosystem,” Chris said. “We have over 3,000 square feet of curated habitat that showcases more than 50 plant varieties, all selected for their ability to attract, feed, and provide shelter for these delicate pollinators.”

Visitors can extend their journey beyond the greenhouse walls, venturing into the outer gardens. These spaces are not just supplementary attractions but are integral to the education on the creation, preservation, and conservation of native butterfly habitats.

“We’ve designed the outer gardens to be beautiful and functional, supporting wild butterflies in their natural cycles,” Chris said.

The Butterfly Greenhouse is not a static display but a dynamic environment with over 5,000 butterflies. Chris proudly mentioned the Monarch Tag & Release event: “It’s one of our most cherished occasions. Guests can release tagged monarchs, contributing to a global effort to track and support their migration to Mexico—a journey as breathtaking as the butterflies themselves.”

Maintaining this natural wonder is no small feat. “It’s a huge job,” Chris said. Daily maintenance involves watering, weeding, and special care, such as providing fermented fruit. Protecting the inhabitants from predators requires vigilance.

“We’ve had our share of surprise guests—birds, snakes, and even frogs,” Taylor says, emphasizing the constant attention needed to maintain the balance within this unique ecosystem.

The greenhouse’s roots spread through the community as it partners with local schools, scout troops, and community group homes.

“Our goal is to foster a love for the environment through hands-on educational experiences,” Chris said. “Each visit is tailored to the visitors, ensuring a memorable and engaging connection with nature.”

The butterfly greenhouse thrives on community involvement. “Just get involved,” Chris urged. Whether it’s through volunteering, purchasing a pass, or simply sharing the greenhouse’s story, every action contributes to its flourishing. “Becoming a pollinator partner is one of the best ways to support our mission,” he said.
