#NO TO XENOPHOBIA He came bearing gifts, they were gifts of deception. He lied to you in order to manipulate you. He raped you over and over again. He ripped your offspring’s from you all in the name of slavery. Now you lie in your own blood with a promise to never let it happen again. O’ Africa you need to heal your wounds. You have wealth but your children need you. Your children are killing each other for your love. Africa weak from your insecurity and pain. Africa stop singing the could have, should have song. You are stronger than you think Africa. You can love again, you can love yourself again. You can be patriotic to your land again. Every wound can be healed, Africa you can heal. You are the cradle of mankind not the taker of life, you are motherland not murder land. You are the conception of humility, you said umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu. Nigerians, Congoles, Zimbabweans are your siblings. You carry the family name South Africa. You are the pride and joy of the world. You have survived Apartheid with no violence. South Africa you need to heal. As a nation we apologise to our brothers and sisters for the violence and the killing. As a country we say no to xenophobia. Africa is for Africans.

MONEY MATTERS

Lets be honest not everything we spend money on gives us pleasure

Even on the tightest budget, everybody spends at least some money for pleasure. And everybody has a wishlist of expenses that they feel they cannot afford to splurge on right now.

Rather than condemn this reality and end up fighting a losing battle against an understanding of your emotional motivations and direct these to help you make financial decisions that will make you happier in the present but also foster long-term financial health. Here are some thoughts around harnessing your emotions for better financial habits. First, you need to know yourself – your values, goals and priorities. This brings a sense of clarity and

Next, draft an “ideal” spending plan that reflects your most important priorities.

You should feel more energised just writing it down as each entry resonates with your spirit After this, de-clutter your existing budget. Emotions are in constant flux, so some choices made in a particular state of mind might not be relevant in your big picture. You’ll feel lighter and more energized if you unburden yourself of financial commitments that do not support your real priorities in life to make funds available for better use. Your value-centred budget can be a huge help. Think of your budget as your plan for spending consistently in line with your priorities, regardless of your changing emotions. It helps eliminate fickle emotional choices. This doesn’t mean you can’t be spontaneous - just budget for

Every cent must deliver value in terms of what’s really important to you, or you don’t send it in that direction. If you apply your “values test” to every item and your budget reflects your true big-picture priorities, your work is done. A good spending plan means that the hard decisions are all made in advance and it’s easy to be disciplined if you are clear on the value on which the expense (or limit on the expense) is based and the emotion associated with that value is engaged. With the day-to-day spending under control, your mind is free to deal with the new spending opportunities that come your way, and those are made easier by asking “Does this expense move me closer to my values and goals and is it the best use of my money right now?”.

THE BOOKSHELF fit in or stand out This entrepreneur wrote his debut book: The StartUp Revolution: Fit In or Stand Out due to his passion about entrepreneurship development. His experience ranges from entrepreneurship research, training on various entrepreneurship topics, mentorship, coaching, organising and facilitating entrepreneurship seminars.

THE START-UP REVOLUTION: FIT IN OR STAND OUT ROCHE MAMABOLO

Some of the seminars that he has organized includes business leadership, entrepreneurship, strategy, growth, State of Entrepreneurship in South Africa.

IN REVIEW OF THE BOOK In the Startup Revolution, doing what you are told is the new definition of laziness.

07

This new laziness has nothing to do with physical labour and everything to do with fear. If you are not going to start that business, make those sales calls, invest in innovation or push that insight, if you are sheep-walking your life, asking no questions, changing nothing, adding nothing new, you are not avoiding being lazy because you need physical rest. You are hiding out because you are afraid of expending emotional and mental labour.

The Industrial revolution of having a factory job is coming to an end. It is replaced by a new economy of connectedness.

08

People who make change today are those who challenge the status quo; those who see opportunities in the midst of chaos and those who are not afraid of failure, but are aware that failure is part of growth.

The book teaches one to either fit in or stand out, you can’t do both. It’s up to you, and that’s part of the power that you have.

Start something that matters. Be part of the revolution. You don’t need permission. My suggestion is that all entrepreneurs should own a copy of The Startup Revolution in their collection. Let’s share knowledge in a nation that has many opportunities.

PARENTING

BY PEARL ZWANE

I write this article with a great deal of concern for our children, who are raised by television and for parents who have come to accept this as the new normal. The truth is, we live in highly challenging times, Economically, Emotionally and Spiritually.

How then, do we build societies when we are hardly absent from our children’s lives and we have happily sacrificed them to the altar of media: TV, and other social media? It is said “Children are great imitators, so give them something great to imitate”. It is also said that “If you want your children to turn out well, spend twice as much time with them, and half as much money”.

The capitalistic world which we find ourselves demands of us, to work double hard in order to barely survive.

Unfortunately, there is no easy solution for this, but it’s important that as young parents we are reminded and aware of the dangers of tv and media in general.

We also find ourselves in a highly materialist world where in order to fit in, we stretch ourselves beyond capacity to keep up with the Jones.

If you were raised in the old fashioned way, you will remember your parents always telling you “You are what you behold”.

This in turn, eats away at our Spirituality, an innate need in all human beings to connect to something bigger than we are. Thus, in this aspect, we

I refer to children in two parts, children under the age of 12 years and teenagers.

are found wanting.

15

While the young ones are glued to classic shows like Disney movies, which are synonymous with innocent, morality stories, it’s important to note that some have subliminal messages. It is from these movies that children often get their first impressions of how men and women are supposed to act. Too much time in front of the telly, increases obesity and related illness in young ones as they spend their time sitting instead of exercising in the form of play and movement. Kids who watch violent shows on tv are more likely to show aggressive behavior by bullying at school and being uncontrollable at home. While it’s good for them to take a break from reality and get lost in a different magical world where anything is possible, parents are to take time to supervise content regularly.

For Teenagers, the effects of dependency on tv and social media are even worse. my concern is... Teens are undergoing dramatic changes. In addition to the biological changes of puberty, they experience cognitive changes that allow them to think more abstractly. They become increasingly focused on friends. And as they seek greater independence, they often come into conflict with parents. If these problems go unchecked, they lead to drug abuse, crime and dropping out of school.

16

Popular shows often have strong sexual innuendos and violet scenes. They depict risky behaviours such as drinking, smoking, and impairs capacity for rational thought. Reality tv shows make gossiping, diva-behaviour, extreme competitive behavior something of a norm and they tend to emulate and expect it in every day life.

For Teen boys , the violence on tv desensitizes them to real life violence, so that when violence is taking place in real time, they are already immune to it. Women are also depicted as objects in these movies, thus young men think it’s ok to treat women badly. An interesting fact: A 2008 study, analyzed the link between teenage parenthood and found that teens who watched sexually explicit television (from simple shows that just talk about a character having sex to shows with soft sex scenes) were twice as likely as other teens, who had not watched much of these shows, to have a baby by age 16. The study’s conclusion prompted that teens see sexually explicit content and assume that everyone is doing it so there are not any significant consequences So what should parents do? As much as we can, parents MUST take time to spend with their children, and to put restrictions and rules to shows which must be watched.

TV should be used for occasional entertainment, but not for constant escapism.

Maps is proudly Tswana, he tries to spend most of his time with his mom and grandmother , listening to stories of how his parents did things .He also tries to speak a lot of his language when his home and has traditional meals. Masego has always known that he is creative, in fact an abstract thinker as he does a lot of ghost designing for different brands as well as creative consulting. He had his own label about two years ago and he has also done a collaboration with Augustine Clothing, then the focus was men’s formal wear. All this he did while he was the head designer for the brand. Unfortunately the range is not available anymore. Lucilla, the director of S.A Fashion week is one of the individuals that enforced the traits of attention to detail as well as discipline which Maps embraced and carries with him in all his endeavors.

“She is a woman that has all the experience in the world and has pioneered S.A Fashion week he says. Having been exposed and working in Fashion weeks we understand why Maps is always on point with regards to his appearance.

BY NGAWETHU KA SIPHIWO He has always played sports most of his life therefore his body stayed in shape according to its memory. He plans to spend more time at the gym as he fills like his getting softer with age. We have also spotted him looking fabulous at events , let me remind you that he has also MC’d a number of events and still gets nervous in the beginning because he does not know how the audience will react. The one thing that really calms him down is the response from the audience “that first laugh” and basically his good to go! We tap back to life at Varsity we can only image that life could not have been easy.

He was named one of the most stylish Model /Media Personality at the S.A Style Award in 2013. He says that really makes him feel stylish and good with a giggle revealing his dimples.

However he has never understood the hype reason being he feels that people in general should be able to dress themselves. He highlights that he appreciates the recognition as his more comfortable in his own skin and it is a bonus when his given a stamp of approval.

Maybe he got a bit distracted by the attention he got because of his looks. Well that was not the case at all in fact he even takes me back to life in high school. Where he was every girl’s best friend, Doctor Phil of all the girls helping then with their problems. Patting them on the back when things did not go so well. Even though he remembers himself as very awkward and rather scrawny, he was the nice guy that finished last. The tables slightly turned in Varsity as he admits that he did not understand the amount of attention he got. So for him it has been really weird to adjust to. He just down plays it all, and doesn’t give it the attention it gives him. “When

you entertain such you start making stupid decisions like sleeping with everyone in the industry loosing focus and you start losing the person you are” that he explains with a serious face.

HEALTH WATCH

WITH DR SINABO MnQONYWA

know your status

I throw punches harder than Mike Tyson, I multiply faster than the Khoisan. I bring a war within. I come alive from the moment you neglect the glove before you go in.

Exchange of blood and other bodily fluids is how I extend. Once I am in you I become part of you up until the very end. I replicate real fast, thus every army eventually falls. Know your status, go test and take control over your life. Your only chance of survival is by detecting me early as I am not so strong then. If you remain ignorant then I become visible and your body will deteriorate and people will ask, and then? I am so slick I can mutate, so you can call me a shape shifter. Cuts and grazes, I stand eager, even when you share a needle with a junky drifter. I am not visible, I move like a phantom. Once I am there, a life apart is something you can never fathom. I remain the most unwanted though I am summoned by your reckless actions. I win the war by winning daily battles, I take control step by step, fraction by fraction. I have many nicknames, like Z3 or House in Verulam. I bring terror and fear unlike Mary and her little lamb. Many know me as HIV, most don’t know me in full. I am Human Immunodeficiency Virus and no antivirus can stop me if you act the fool. IGNORE ME NOT by Donovan Mabe

23

Reality is that HIV is here to stay as long as people (young and old) behave in a nonchalant manner towards the disease. In this day and age people tend to be quite oblivious to it. This should be a medical article however I saw it befitting to address the stereotypes and attitudes towards the disease in the first issue. Sad reality is that this disease is robbing our nation, our economy, but most importantly our loved ones of a mother, a father, a brother and a sister somewhere out there.

The contempt that people have for this silent killer is shocking. You get people that believe that they are immune to the virus, well best believe you are not!!! What’s even more alarming is the notions that people think that in order for one to contract the virus you have to be promiscuous. Well I am here to tell you otherwise, you can get the virus the 1st time you don’t use protection. Secondly the virus is not only contracted through intercourse but could happen through needle stick injuries (for healthcare workers), massive blood spill in an accident, blood transfusion and many other ways. However on a lighter note I want to reassure you that it is not the end of the world.

24

It may seem like it when you receive the devastating news but it is not. First and foremost upon receiving the news one ought to accept the status (difficult as it may be). Secondly seek counselling to help you deal with the devastating news. Thirdly speak to someone close to you that you confide in (Don’t suffer in silence). Last but not least speak to your family doctor or nurse at the clinic on the way forward with respect to your current state. Don’t forget to look out for the next issue of Zingce Magazine as we will be looking at healthy living with HIV, treatment and pregnancy in HIV. Thereafter we will touch on high risk groups (i.e. LGBT, youth, drug users etc).

The aim for these sequel issues is because we want to say to you, children of the soil claim your health back. Enough is enough we will conquer the war against HIV together .This is our battle and we can win it.

STEPS TO A FLAT TUMMY IN 7 DAYS

You want to wear your favourite outfit or that ngi bambhabambhe dress but the worry kicks in. Oops… flabby stomach AKA UMKHABA, bulging out. Well, what would life be without solutions?

Step Two: You have to work on your abdominal muscles three times in the week. Crunches and leg raises for three sets of 20 repetitions should be done. Also, do planks by holding your body in a push-up position on your elbows for 30 to 60 seconds for four sets. AKA the “KITCHEN WORKOUT” which is also available for you with additional work outs on the JULUKMENT DVD !!!

While you cannot reduce fat, you can lose tummy fat by decreasing your total body fat percentage.

And you don’t have to completely alter your daily habits to get a flat stomach within 7 days! Stop sulking …..WOOOOOOZA !

Step one: If you want to build muscle and burn fat at the same time, you have to perform circuit training, three days per week. How can you achieve this? Indulge in full body exercises like lunges, push-ups, and pull-ups, for one set of 15 repetitions. Don’t forget to follow every exercise with one minute of skipping rope. You should be able to burn around 500 to 600 calories per workout.

25

Step three: The kind of food you will eat in this period is vital in bringing about any change. Natural foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads , pastas, chicken, beef, fish and low fat dairy should replace processed foods full of sugar. Dedication is also a big requirement, after all you want visible results

Step four: To minimize water retention, lower your sodium intake. This means you need to avoid salt. You can flavour your food with other herbs and spices instead.

Step five: Stressing and anxiety can cause the over-production of a certain hormone called cortisol, which encourages weight gain about the” mkhaba “ area. So try to keep your cool! DONT STRESS !!!!!

BY SIBONGILE NKANYANE

Tips&Tricks FOR THE SEASON

If you love beauty , makeup and fragrance then keep your eyes glued.

Nothing is as sexy and attractive as a man that is well groomed , smells good and has the confidence to match it! Good skin starts with good skincare Routine.

My name is Sibongile Nkanyane, I have been privileged enough to be in the beauty industry for

I don’t mean just washing your face with soap then you done. It is important to cleanse and exfoliate the skin as our skin releases new skin cells every day, so exfoliating helps remove the dead skin and makes room for “new” skin.

over five years. I know that I am the envy of most girls because it is their secret dream job or even some gentlemen out there- Giggles. This career allows you to release your innermost creativity , no one will judge but instead follow a new trend. There is something so special about being able to transform a person’s facial structure and features. As that triggers instant confidence. Makeup, skincare and fragrance allows you to LOOK GOOD,FEEL GOOD,SMELL GOOD!

I have heard most women using a statement that does not exist in my beauty guide book “ Makeup does not suit me .”

Generally man do not like spending too much time on their faces but there are products that kill two birds with one stone. The likes of a good selling exfoliating cleanser by Clarins (2in1 exfoliating cleanser) OR Nivea facial wash for men. There are 3 basic steps that one needs follow in order to have healthy looking skin. 1.Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise. Not rocket science at all.

MEN & MAKEUP TIPS: When men hear the word makeup they think women, time and “not for me” yet makeup can be applied to help hide and enhance a person’s looks. Eg: Foundation/ A tinted moisturiser can be used by a man to hide unwanted scares, powder to make the skin look less oily.

Then you find men that still think makeup is only meant for woman, Hello! Wake up ! Move with the new era……

Let us agree on the following with good skin, confidence and good fashion sense.

In my own personal opinion makeup is meant for anyone who wants to enhance their God given facial features being MALE or FEMALE. Now that’s out of the way…

One is only left to be paired with a good fragrance this season!

HERE ARE FEW TIPS & TRICKS FOR MEN THIS SEASON :

LADIES MAKEUP TIPS & TRICKS: Please note that the makeup industry is one of the fastest growing businesses

39

next to the hair selling business. Most Ladies like saying “ I am not leaving the house without my Face which needs must be beautified”. Hair also plays a vital role because that is what defines the type of woman they are... It is like a power suit.

HOW TO APPLY FOUNDATION AND THE REASON WHY WE CONTOUR AND HIGHLIGHT: Contouring and Highlighting is the latest trend that everyone is trying to master .Personally I reckon it’s heaven sent! Being able to focus on your best facial features and hiding those you are not happy with by just using make-up is magical! Contouring is not supposed to be noticeable just a bit of definition and that’s it .When contouring always stick to matte products and while highlighting you can use shimmering products like your bronzer because you want those areas that you are highlighting to stand out. Brushes are very important as well, you need to use contouring brushes in order to perfect the look.

FOUNDATION: When it comes to foundation most woman tend to become confused because it can be quite tricky. I recommend that one invests in two brushes as well as two different foundation colours. One shade for winter and another for summer because the skin changes, in winter we stay indoors and are therefore not exposed that much to the sun hence the lighter shade compared to hot summer days. ALWAYS use one foundation shade darker if you struggle with finding the correct match.

EYEBROWS: Eyebrows are the most important feature on a person’s face, they define your whole face. Full beautiful brows are now trending

40

reason being thick brows make you look younger compared to thin brows. Brow filling is the best way to get that perfect brow, SMASH BOX’S brow filler or GOSH’S brow kit are one of the good brow fillers in the market. Trust me I am an expert! Eye shadows in shades that closely match the colour of your brow can be used as well. Apply with a soft wedge brush or thin liner brush. Begin application in the centre of the brow and work outward toward the brow tip then back towards the beginning of the brow. Use short light strokes between the brows hairs and apply a bit more pressure (for a bit more colour.) When defining the underside of the brow, use a clean toothbrush or brow brush to soften the colour and groom the brow. A clear brow gel can be used to keep the hairs in place. When filling in your brows always use a colour whether it is a pencil or brow powder that is the same colour as your natural eyebrow. Ladies! Ladies, ladies stay away from brow liners that are not the same shade as their natural hair colour.

LONG LASTING LIPSTICK TRICK: With our busy schedules the last thing that we want to worry about is if our lipstick will last us the whole day. The trick is to first apply powder on your lip to give it a matte feel then apply your favourite lip colour (one coat) add powder again then another coat of the same lipstick. Repeat this one more time and there you have your favourite lipstick on and with no worries about retouching.

leadership

We are in a country that requires leaders that lead with Integrity. With that said do we know how to identify a leader.

leadership, therefore life is all about leadership.

Mr Selwyn breaks it down, defining a leader , the psychology as well as characteristics of a leader.

As I indicated earlier leadership is not a one man project even though it takes an individual to apply leadership principles to govern their lives as an individual.

Definition of a Leader Leadership is the ability to gather people to work together for a common goal and to dynamically have them adapt to change within their environment. The Psychology of Leadership. The Kingdom of God is all about

In other words the psychology of leadership is about understanding individuals and group behavior within a system in order to achieve positive and long lasting change.

For a leader to lead there must be followers, as must as a leader to lead he/she must have followed. This way a leader must have humility qualities in order to direct and serve the needs of society.

Characterisitics of a Leader

41

There are born Leaders and there are made leaders. Those who are born with the gift, characteristics and abilities to lead and those who learn leadership tactics and skills. A Leader is one who is the first amongst the equals. The respect aspect to see others as leaders whilst you are recognizing and raising them as leaders is key for the leadership role.

A Leader is a visionary.

One who dreams of change, makes plans for change and takes action to achieve change. The best of leadership is not to lead followers but to lead leaders. Leaders are anointed people who have the right attitude and the right ability. Leaders train leaders and can attract leaders.

Leaders initiate and not wait to be told to do.

Those are people who open the womb and enjoy the first milk of the breast. In other words, take the first opportunity whilst the rest complain. Leaders are busy people and the true attribute of a leader is not about availability it is about serving people whilst you are busy. Leaders have a servitude spirit.

Leaders live without pretending, listen without defending and love without depending. THE Role of a Leader in Society With these aforementioned qualities, a leader then is elected from the selected to pursue change and transformation in society. Let’s identify 3 types of leaders. You, Religious Leaders, Community and National Leaders. You : You were born to lead, to multiply, to increase, to conquer, to

42

be fruitful and to have dominion. (Genesis:1:28). Thus your role in society is realised. Are you a giver, a peacemaker, a motivator or activator? What is your purpose ? Are you a world changer ? Church leaders: Religion is closely married to tradition. These leaders teach, influence and revolutionize lives through the principles of God . There is no one alive who knows God and has self-esteem issues. No one alive who knows God has no plans, is confused about what their role in life is and speaks negative all the time. Church leaders deal with etiquette issues and challenges that not only face individuals but the nation as a whole. Community Leaders: I had the privilege to witness a principal at one of our local school here in Pimville (Soweto) speaking at Assembly. Teaching children to say I CAN. She broke it down and SAID: I - Who I am, What I am, Why I am C - Committed A - Able to do Anything N - No to giving up Community leaders and National Leaders just like church Leaders speak the same language. The secret lies in all of us being unified and having a common goal and that is to see our nation thriving.

We have so much to celebrate! Discover the leader in You, join the I CAN GENERATION.

VICTORY OVER THE FLESH Galatians 5 Verses 16 states the following : I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[a] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance against such there’s no law.

44

Men never have had to make a law against the works of the spirit, uh, excuse me, the fruit of the spirit, only law has to be made against the works of the flesh. The works of the flesh, you do that by yourself, but the fruit of the spirit, he does that through you and therefore there’s a contrast between works and fruit. We produce the work, that is, it’s an inside job, and we only bear the fruit. You see, the Holy Spirit produces the fruit.

We produce the work. And so, Paul is very exacting here in this scripture that he uses. If you go with the fruit of the spirit you will have the victory over the flesh. Desire love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith and meekness.. That is what is needed in these difficult times we live in. God bless you All. To Know Him & To Make Him Known-

BETHANY CHILDRENS HOME

BETHANY Children’s Home Zingce Lifestyle Magazine travels to the OR Tambo region to meet a lady that is changing the face of the community by being a beckon of hope. Mrs Rose Kasumbi, is the Director of Bethany Children’s Home located in Ikhwezi Township, Mthatha in the Eastern Cape Bethany Home, Place of Safety provides residential care and support for orphaned, abandoned, neglected and abused children from birth to six years of age.

The organisation was founded in 1998 by the Sisters of the Precious Blood initially to support young expectant mothers infected with HIV/Aids and their ailing babies. Due to the need in Mthatha for a place of safety for vulnerable children with the involvement of other crucial stakeholders; Social Services and the Victim Support Unit (SAPS) have contributed to what it is today. The Department of Social development allowed the home to have an intake of 80 children. The Children receive all the necessary care within the home. Social workers from the Social Service’s District offices in the former Transkei area as well as some Police officers from SAPS also played a role in identifying and bringing the children to the Home.

47

These children are now in the care of individuals who have their best interests at heart. Children are placed in age groups inside the home, from 0 to 18 months: 15 children, 18 months to 3 years: 15 children; 3 to 4 years: 25 children and 5 to 6 years old: 25 children.

The home has 25 Caregivers who are the driving force of this programme as they offer the primary cares of our children from bathing, dressing, feeding, cooking, cleaning and doing laundry for them. During the period of stay re-unification services are implemented to ensure re –integration of children with their families and community of origin. The home also has a psycho social care programme in place for the children which is structured to meet ongoing emotional, social and spiritual needs.

It is coordinated by their in-house social workers and focuses on rendering psychosocial support through play therapy, basic counselling, and structured developmental assessments. Developmental assessment of each child is done and assessment results analysed to inform the activities that can be facilitated by the social workers to meet each child’s needs.

48

In addition to that, Bethany Home also has a Health Promotion and Nutrition Programme in place for the children. It is often said that _ ‘a healthy child is a happy child’, thus the aim of the programme is to promote healthy development and improve the standard of health as well as care in a overcrowded environment such as Bethany home. This programme is coordinated by one of their in –house Health Care Practitioner (Nurse). Immunisation is done monthly as per needs. The latter level of intervention includes referring children to hospital for further examination, and at times children who are very sick do get admitted. The team at Bethany Home strongly believe that all children have the right to grow and develop within a context that is supportive of their development. Therefore the home embraces a holistic and innovative approach that meets the needs of children in their care. The registered NGO, Bethany Home is subsidised by the Department of Social Development at R1700 per child every month. To meet its financial requirement and offer their residents the basic services that they need. strength in adversity In sports the first few months of the year come with a feeling of a new start, a new chance and yet another opportunity to etch your name in history. The past year was difficult for the nation, losing a new professional in Phindile Mwelase who had fought on five professional fights before her untimely death, the soccer national team captain Senzo Meyiwa and a World Championship gold medallist Mbulaeni Mlaudzi. I would like to set the tone for 2015 by drawing strength from our fallen heroes and young athletes. It is amazing how one can be able to be so caught up in supporting and being a mad fanatic season after season that the accolades and path to greatness is forgotten. Well, THIS is how it happened. Mbulaeni Mlaudzi

The 1999 African Junior Athletics Championship became more than another athletics meeting, it was the birth of an insatiable appetite for big championship medals when he won the 800m final. Mlaudzi got a podium finish in his first attempt at a senior championship , the 2000 African Championships in Athletics. In 2002 he grabbed himself a gold medal having failed to get a podium finish in the previous edition of the Commonwealth Games, in the same year he won a bronze medal at the World Championship. 2004 was a breakthrough for the 800m specialist, he won an Olympic Silver Medal that was coupled with a World Indoor Championship gold. He got inducted into the University of Pretoria Sports Wall of Fame. An honour that seemed to spur him on he became the top ranked 800m athlete in the world for the year 2006, duly being rewarded with the South African Sportsman of the year award that year. More medals followed the middle distance runner form Muduluni as he won a silver medal both in 2006 and 2008 at the World Indoor Championships, coming either side of another silver medal at the 2007 All Africa Games.

He started in his journey as a boy in the Limpopo Province in the village of Muduluni. He was well in his way to great acclaim when as a teenager, he introduced himself to the world.

The next year Mlaudzi won his maiden World Athletics Championships gold, 2009 was an exceptional year for him as he set a personal lifetime best of 1:42:86 minutes. He capped his also impressive medal haul with a Grand Prix IAAF de Dakar Bronze in 2010. See?, that’s how it happened.

It’s not about a simple rise to fame but respect earned through hard work before after setbacks that could easily discourage another. Generally in life there are challenges and they tend to wear us down, making it hard for one to fulfil their potential and live their dream. It is the heart of a Lion that overcomes such adversity, fighting through the pain and sometimes public doubt of your talent. One such man has represented me as a proud South African, he has lead my Nation into battle and came out victorious… One such man is Senzo Meyiwa

A leader with passion and endless determination to do his best to stop the goals form going in as a goalkeeper, he actually started his soccer career trying to put the ball in the net as a striker at his hometown club London Cosmos in Durban, Umlazi. Switching to the goalkeeper position seemed to work like a charm as it earned him a spot in the Transnet Under 14 and later the Coca-Cola under 17 KwaZulu Natal teams. After being scouted and picked up by Orlando Pirates he swiftly made progress through the ranks at youth level and ultimately made his debut for the Mighty Buccaneers in 2006 versus AmaZulu.

54

Meyiwa went on to be part of the fabled back to back treble winning squad in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons, a feat never done before in South Africa. That experience with the squad seemed to motivate him as he claimed the number 1 jersey for Orlando Pirates in 2013. His bravery and heroic spirit was a mainstay in a season where Orlando Pirates captured the Nation as they marched on to the CAF Champions League Final where they lost to the Egyptian club Al Ahly. In the same year he made his debut for the National team in a match versus Lesotho, this was to be a preparation for greater things for the young man from Umlazi.

After winning the 2014 Nedbank Cup with Orlando Pirates, the young man oozing form and exuberance took advantage of an injury his close friend and rival Itumeleng Khune sustained to become the number 1 goalkeeper for Bafana Bafana. Not only was he made the number 1 man between the sticks, he was also given the captaincy by new coach Shakes Mashaba. He took to the role like a fish in water , he was in his element , an obstacle before strikers. He led South Africa to an unbeaten 2015 AFCON qualification campaign, keeping four successive clean sheets and throwing South Africa’s name straight into the favourite’s hat to

possibly win the African show piece. For a man who worked tirelessly to become the best and succeeded, for a captain who played with a passion a Nation had yearned for, the constant progress and development of young minds in South Africa is Paramount. phindile mwelase

the bright lights of Johannesburg in 2009. Mwelase took part in five officially recognised fights, suffering four losses and a draw. A short and rather underwhelming career one might point out, but the former stands out in my opinion; considering how the late blooming of the now much celebrated Senzo Meyiwa’s career turned out. Phindile Mwelase received a posthumous silver status Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 South African Sports Awards.

Phindile Mwelase, a name you probably didn’t know, whether due to a limited knowledge of women’s boxing or the mere fact that she hadn’t donned the red leather for long before her untimely death.

Born in the KwaZulu Natal town of Ladysmith, Mwelase was always a tough girl who didn’t shy away from hard work. Testament to the sport she was to take on later in her life, she used to help her father with breaking down walls seemingly as preparation to break down opponents.

A heart of a lion, endurance of a wolf and the backing of one’s self is all you need to start something great. Perhaps that something great isn’t representing your nation, or covering kilometres of tar under your rubber, perhaps its feeling good about being in one’s skin. This is the year, a new chance and a new feeling…its being the best YOU.

She took up boxing in 2007, after getting to grips with the ring and all its weaves and bops. She switched to training with George Khosi’s Hillbrow Boxing Club in Johannesburg, then linked up with Stanley Ndlovu still in

EVENT REVIEW CHRIS BROWN CONCERT BY TSHEPISO TSHABALALA

The Coca – Cola Dome which is situated in North Riding, Johannesburg is known for hosting international concerts.

With a seating capacity of 19 000, an 11 000 square metre Arena, the multi – purpose exhibition space experienced high irregular temperature on the 2 April 2015. A great dancer, street fashion icon, with a lot of swag invaded the Dome. It was the hot man himself, Chris breezy in the flesh accompanied by four equally sexy dancers and a live band on stage! August Alsina gave a great opening act. I wasn’t a big fan before the concert, but I’m definitely a fan now. With that said throw your hands up in the air! A little more of August for me!

Yes he can sing, but he’s not a Beyoncé or an usher. So for this tour, the Grammy Award winning singer Chris Brown gets an 8/10 from me. I only wish he could’ve performed a little longer and more songs either from the fan of a fan album, or the X - album. Otherwise, the concert was great, I definitely got my money’s worth. Besides the issues on the organisational side, the concert itself was great. After all Chris Brown is a performer so there was a lot of dancing, high tempo dancing to be precise which I really enjoyed. So I excuse him for his lip syncing. In an interview, Arnold Schwaznegar was asked the following question. If there was one thing he could ask for, what would it be? His response - As a celebrity, to be allowed to make mistakes. As for Chris Brown, he’s done his time. He’s turned or is turning his life around. We had the privilege of seeing

57

a maturing star in the making giving a great performance. He’s not perfect, but he’s definitely an inspiration for those who’ve been down and out, and has proved that getting back up is a choice. There you have it readers, my experience. Your girl T, has to bounce and update this event on face book Ayeye!
