All in a Galz life is a beautiful thrilling book about five women coming from different backgrounds but have managed to find common ground through their life experiences with their families and the men in their lives This book tells webs of stories of Mandisa, Kate, Matlakala, Terry and Portia who have to confront their pasts in order to find their way into the future. There are riveting moments in the book that capture the anger, passion and perseverance displayed by these women as they navigate the complex journey of life. There is deception, betrayal, tears and pain. Mandisa is an accomplished woman who has battled to settle and have children, her past catches up with

her giving her answers to why she hasn’t found love yet; she has unfinished business with a lover from the past. Kate has been living a facade as an independent business woman, but she is drowning in debt and has not dealt with the pain of how she parted with the father of her baby, she receives an e-mail that will change the rest of her life from Baby daddy. Matlakala is a gorgeous woman who convinced herself that the only way to keep a man is through babies. She has two children with different fathers. She can’t take this inconsistency anymore and wants to settle down, but she needs to shed some of her materialistic beliefs and find true love. Terry is the academic and calm one of the pack; no one imagines she can ever have problems. She finally falls pregnant by her lover of five years only to discover her man might have another woman waiting in line. Portia is the extremist of the pack, highly assertive, brutally honest and always has her life in order. She doesn’t realise that her attitude is chasing her man away. This leads her to discovering a haunting affair involving a child which she had no clue existed. These women have only each other for comfort and their stories bring their friendship closer. The book is a simple tale of what women go through daily as they struggle to find love, happiness and stability.

CAREER PROFILE WOMEN THAT ARE BOSS

Puleng Kwele CEO, Broadband Infraco

Puleng Kwele, CEO of Broadband Infraco, is an inspiration to many, especially women and young people. The Wits Bsc Honorary Graduate’s fighting spirit enabled her to climb the corporate ladder snatching a top position in a male dominated field. Mrs Kwele further understands that communication remains the driving force within our people. In her words “A cell phone is no longer a want but a necessity in our daily life”. This then adds pressure to the telecommunications sector to constantly find innovative ways to ensure that communication is made easier, efficiently and upgraded on a regular basis.

Broadband Infraco, the company which has entrusted her with the role of CEO provides long distance national and international connectivity to licensed private sector partners, licenseexempt projects of national importance and to previously underserviced areas. 06

A; I’m especially passionate about the empowerment of women and young girls. It’s vital to avail yourself to young girls in need of inspiration. I feel compelled to also impart to girls because I sometimes feel girls need to be toughened up somehow. The ICT sector is often referred to as a man’s world, but I consider it a human world. I was told that I can do anything and I believe this is an important message for all girl children to hear. Anything is possible, if you believe. Siyabulela Xuza would not have made that rocket if he had not been exposed to rocket technology. The advantage that the youth of today have is that they have exposure to learning and development through the use of ICT. So, I would say, be out there, read as much as you can and familiarise yourself with the world and what drives it and you are set for success.

MONEY MATTERS

WITH MARK CLOETE

HOW TO BE

Debt Savvy Surely no-one would wish to be in the stressful position of owing money they cannot repay. How is it then that so many people end up in that place and find themselves desperate for help?

PEOPLE SOMETIMES TALK ABOUT BEING IN DEBT AS IF WERE A CONTAGIOUS DISEASE THEY PICKED UP WHEN SOMEONE SNEEZED, OR SOMETHING THAT CREPT UP ON THEM UNSEEN AND POUNCED ON THEM SUDDENLY.

This perspective on debt highlights just how easily available credit is to nearly anyone, but how those who use credit may not possess the knowledge, skills or will to apply it responsibly.

How we got into debt in the first place The hard truth is that nobody ever got into debt accidentally. Anyone who is in debt is in that position as the result of a series of conscious choices. Despite the availability of credit, one must still apply for it before it is granted and there is never any misunderstanding that the debt is expected to be repaid.

There are many reasons that people get into debt, but I believe the main reason is emotional spending coupled with ignorance of how debt works. Emotional credit spending is when one has a strong desire to own something that they cannot afford to purchase outright. They then rationalise that the desire is in fact a need and having persuaded themselves of the necessity of the purchase they use credit to purchase the item. Usually, the only financial analysis that goes into this decision, is to answer the question “Can I afford the repayments right now? Once someone establishes this decision-making process as it

09

usually becomes habit and repeats itself until every disposable cent of monthly income for the foreseeable future is committed to creditors. Once in this position, one is unable to build wealth and vulnerable to economic conditions like rising interest rates and retrenchments, or business downturn.

“The best way to get out of debt is not getting into debt in the first place” Take the view that if you can’t afford to buy it outright, then you should save until you can. A very helpful guideline is never to use debt to buy something that is for consumption purposes. Only consider debt where the funds will be used to invest in an asset that will grow in value, such as a property or business.

What should you be considering when you do decide to use credit? Knowing what the repayment will be and whether your monthly income can cover it and leave you with sufficient surplus to manage life’s variables is a good start.

10

After that, you should calculate the total cost of the item over the entire period of repayment and compare that to its price as well as its estimated value at the time you will have settled the debt. Then ask yourself if you feel you are getting value for money. You should also make sure you know the rate of interest per year and compare this with other credit facilities as this rate determines the cost of the money you are borrowing and ultimately the total amount you eventually pay. Before committing to debt, you should also consider the direction interest rates are moving in the market and calculate what your total repayments for the debts you already have and the one you are considering will be for each 0.5% rise in interest rates and make sure you can afford the extra cost when rates change. You might also want to ask yourself if there are other highpriority purchases you will need to consider during the term of this particular loan and whether you will be able to afford those repayments while you are still paying this credit agreement. In short, one needs to slow down the decision making process, consider the entire time period the loan covers and everything that

could impact you financially during that period and then make a wellinformed decision.

How to bust your debt super-quick using the snowball method • Budget for a surplus in your monthly income (Yes, it’s hard) • List your debts from the smallest balance to the largest balance • Add the surplus to the monthly payment on the smallest balance to settle it earlier. • Now add the surplus and the repayment from the smallest debt to the second-smallest debt to settle that debt earlier. • Repeat the process above until all your debts are settled. This is a simple and highly effective method, but it relies on you to be committed and disciplined. Try searching on Google or your app store for tools that may help you with the snowball method – there are many available. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A

BLACK WHITE MAN MAN AND A

When measures such as affirmative action and employment equity goals are put in place to right these wrongs, the white collective rises up in mumbled screams under their perfectly ironed collars.

11

The aim of this article is to awaken the black nation that has been operating on remote control and equally feeling inferior in a developing country that has many opportunities. In most cases it appears as if the white man has the upper hand however reality is that we should all be treated equally.‌We are human beings, is it not so?

Apart from the obvious difference of our skin colour, the white man in Southern Africa has had an eternal advantage over the black man through years and years of racial oppression. When measures such as affirmative action and employment equity goals are put in place to right these wrongs, the white collective rises up in mumbled screams under their perfectly ironed collars. Or even worse, through the control they still have in most of corporate companies in SA. There is nothing more demeaning to

12

a black man than being looked down upon because of skin colour. One knows that they have the merits to do a job or to be the best in the company. What is the difference between a black graduate straight out of varsity and a white graduate straight out varsity? There is absolutely no difference in the abilities and skill sets of these graduates but the private sector will have us believe that because the white graduates father was and still is an exec in the JSE Top 40 Company, he somehow holds an advantage over his black colleague. I have always been of the belief that although a lot of SA’s top companies were built on the back of the faulty and unequal apartheid system, blacks should not expect to make inroads into these companies. They should therefore build they own Sanlams and FNBs because no law or affirmative action will put these companies in their hands.

Never question the ability of a black nation to build great companies (Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo, Inkunzi investments).

One thing is needed, the belief and support of our own people for these companies to succeed. Instead of the black exec seeing the young black man as a threat to him, he should help him.

Bodies such as the BMF should encourage members to support those who are entering the workplace, lost and confused at what corporate SA has to offer. We have trail blazers who have lit the path for young black people with corporate and entrepreneurial ambitions. To push this mandate of black excellence, there is a need of strong support systems. That is the only way that these systemic inequalities thrust upon the black nation will be eliminated. Let us no longer undermine, let the white and black unite. Skills transfer should be the main focus on both races in that way we strive in creating a better country for all to live in. Equality is the strength of a nation.

MOTIVATION WITH KHULU DUMA

TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH. Khulu Duma. Living Waters Assembly of God, Boksburg. It’s quite incredible how we hear that there’s this Jesus who can do great things in our lives. All we have to do is believe in him and “Bam!” our biggest disasters gets sorted.

In times of desperate need that’s exactly what we need to hear. In addition to that we need to know that God cares for us and will sort things out on our behalf. So what’s our natural response upon hearing all this? We tend to beg and plead; urging with the God of everything if he wouldn’t mind shifting his agenda just a little bit to consider us. And although there’s nothing entirely wrong with doing so, our eyes

are enlighten as we get reference from the book of Mark 5 – In our desperation we end up pushing Jesus through the crowds.

And what Jesus does whenever he’s pushed through big crowds is baffling. He stops for the individual ! The one who just gets what it means to be in his presence. There’s nothing sin ridden about begging for Jesus’ help. However it takes a lot more faith, one needs to move from their comfort zone as we learn from the sick woman in the same story. Stretch out your hand and expect a touch from Jesus. That’s all we really need in any area of our lives – just a touch from him. It’s enough for him to reply, “You took a risk of faith, and now you’re healed and whole. Live well, live blessed! Be healed of your plague.” [Mark 5:34, MSG]

13

RELATIONSHIPS WITH NOELEEN MATHIBELA 1. Be open and honest

A very good friend of mine always advises the ladies: “when you marry, make sure you marry for love, spelt M.O.N.E.Y. If things go sour, you’ll still live in luxury.”

With various factors that affect a relationship, Honesty and money matters are something to look into closely. as these are the issues that can make or break any relationship. Every couple has their preference to how they want to deal with their finances as well as what they want to disclose as they start warming up to their partner and long term commitment. And there is no right or wrong way on how one starts engaging in life changing issues. Or overcoming financial challenges, the way that suits you best. Here are a couple of guidelines to decrease stress levels that most couples experience when they take their relationship to the next level:

14

about your financial status: are you listed, how many credit cards do you have, what have you saved, ect. You do not want your partner to get a surprise visit from the sheriff which could be avoided. See how you can work your way out of debt with the help of your partner. This can be achieved by planning better and cutting down on unnecessary expenses.

2. Work out a monthly budget. 3. Have a savings plan. 4. If any of you want to study, know how much this

they stand and if they want to continue to invest their energy in the relationship. The aim in a relationship is to strike a balance. Both parties need to feel comfortable about where they are financially as well as emotionally and the plan of action is going forward. Never allow money to instil fear in your lifestyle. Know the financial options available to you and utilize the resources that you have, wisely. Do not stay in a relationship that you do not feel comfortable in because there is no honesty, you need to know your worth.

will cost and search for funding that can assist.

Be with someone that wants to be with you especially if 5. When you want to invest they value you. in businesses, be money smart.

6. Be honest about your status – Are you Hiv Positive and your partner is not? Together you can find what works in your relationship. Explore different avenues if you want children in the future.

7. It is also important to be honest to your partner .Be open about children from previous relations. Let your partner be the one to decide if they can live with that or not.

8. Always inform the other partner if you have other partners. The more open you are in your relationship the easier it will be for your partner to talk , feel comfortable, sort of know where

If you are looking at committing in a relationship know what you want and what you do not want to settle for. When you have a better understanding of your wants that eliminates the possibilities of constant arguments with your potential partner/current partner. Truth is you need to know his / her state of mind and their plans .Is this person a visionary should one of us be retrenched will we have a plan B that can sustain us. Sometimes all the money in the world is not the answer to our prayers but the bonus is having a partner that has a spirit of a fighter and take challenges in his /her stride. Transparency is one of the qualities of most successful relations.

the journey with

Gareth Cliff 15

Public figure, Gareth Cliff, appears ambiguous in the sense that many see him as having two personalities.

Could he be amongst the individuals that wants the world to celebrate the great achievements within South Africa? He has played a vital role in the media sphere by telling other individuals stories and nurturing talent. His time has come and we are all ears.

Some could easily mistake him as a member of a radical youth that has freedom of speech.

In celebration of all the elements that stand out about the youth as well as women within this issue. We sample a part of Gareth that the youth , women can learn from: Entrepreneurship, standing firm in what one believes in,

thoughts across? He speaks his mind with no fear and Zingce (Take Pride) Lifestyle Magazine finds out the core of Gareth Cliff. How he remains commited to his craft, his plan to further educate the youth therefore doing things differently with the goal of creating a much more informed generation. Let us uncover, as the 37 year old takes us on a journey behind a man that is very active on social media, an author, philanthropist and founder of Cliff Central online radio station.

16

Let’s just say given his following on social networks and the latest Award at the YOU Spectacular Awards – Social Media Star Award, there must be something his doing right. It’s either you take him seriously or you don’t. He is also doing his part in adding value to society. His latest involvement with regards to educating the youth especially those in the township area on the importance of saying no to drugs

- One Kasi One Treatment Centre Campaign. Mainly driven by the fact that substance abuse remains a major challenge that continues to destroy the future of young people in our country. In addition to the above, Cliff was also in the midst of celebrities that supported the Step Up 2 Start Up launch which was held at Monte Casino recently . The aim was to further educate pupils about entrepreneurship. Issues facing women are also close to his heart and he showed his

that gave Gareth Cliff that defining moment whereby he knew without a doubt that he wanted to be on radio.

17

His career as a radio presenter began at Tuks FM a radio station of the University of Pretoria which was one of the first community broadcasters in South Africa to be given an FM license. After gaining some experience he moved to 702 whereby he started off as a producer then later occupied the presenter spot.

In 2003 he joined 5FM presenting the early morning weekday while juggling the role of being a Judge on Idols. Idols gives Gareth a platform to identify talent and the aim is to find the best amongst the rest .Further giving constructive criticism that will add value to those that have entered. “ Idols is a TV show and I’m a judge” he says . “I’m not there to hurt people, once the show is over our role as judges is over” elaborating further. Therefore it is really up to the future management to do the nurturing. The show is about people’s talents, their stories, and their ambitions.

18

Dealing with young people allowed him to reflect on what he is mostly passionate about. “Once in every four years, I get passionate about Argentina in the World Cup” he says. However he remains most passionate about life and the potential of what we are able to create for the future here in South Africa if we all work together. Gareth loves learning and strongly believes that the more you know the more you realise how much more there is to learn. History, architecture, books, chemistry are some of the things that interest him and if he was not in the media industry he would have probably been a history teacher commenting candidly. Gareth also reads a lot and currently he has dedicated his time to a book called Thrive by Arianna Huffington. He describes Arianna as a media maven. “I’m picking up a few lessons within the book , in between all the boring stuff”. With that said, he also admits that life has taught him many valuable experiences. He makes so many mistakes every day.

GARETH CLIFF

INTERVIEW BY NGAWETHU KA SIPHIWO

For him it’s even hard keeping track. However he does not hold on to those experiences. “You have to move on, mistakes are not a failure - it’s how you deal with them” he says . The moral of the story is that as long as you learn from them and don’t make the same mistakes then you are heading in the right direction. He is also very fortunate to have a great support structure.” I have a supportive family and an excellent manager and mentor”. Even though many may view him as being controversial, he maintains that he never tries to be controversial he just says what he thinks. “Sometimes I think of something as a bland observation, and it turns out some people strongly disagree”. “Better that than mediocre conversations, sometimes if people don’t agree with your opinion it’s labelled as controversial. His advice to the youth and women Question things as an individual. You don’t always have to fit in. Be curious. Be the best YOU can be. Follow what you are most passionate about don’t let the world dictate what you become. Women also need to know that they are stronger than what they believe. A nation thrives because its engine

is the women that are changing communities, nurturing and just giving love. It is your time to shine many walked to Union Buildings in 1956 to ensure that you are free and have rights today. Even though we are living in a free country. He feels that freedom needs to be fought for every day. Freedom of expression, fighting for the truth, doing the best we can. “We need to keep improving” he says. The struggle isn’t over as he reminisces back to the youth of 1976 and the current also taking the state of our country in consideration. We have celebrated many achievements within the youth of South Africa during the month of June. In August we celebrate women’s Month and everything that stands out about Ladies. However he further highlights that the youth, women of this era needs to know exactly what they stand for, where they want to be and they must not be mislead. Gareth views himself as a regular guy. One or two more people may hear him, however he feels very strongly that his not more important than anyone else. He just wants things to work. ” I don’t care if there’s a little bit of corruption, just as long as there’s water and electricity” he says. He is the type of guy, if there is an issue that does not sit well with

19

him he uses his show or blog as a platform to address that particular issue .At one stage in his life his concern stirred him to write an open letter to government. He mentions that the open letter received attention.” I guess it hit home to many people, as we have many issues in our country and those issues have to be discussed”. The idea is to ensure that we find solutions or work on fixing those problems. “I had a very constructive lunch with the President’s office and apologised for calling Blade Nzimande ugly. The catalyst behind the letter is the passion he has for our country. “I will continue to challenge and question what I believe needs to be improved” he says .He clearly states that there is not a chance that one will see him pursuing a career in politics as that field is just not for him. Gareth is such an interesting character apparently he looks like Ryan Gosling , he would not mind if Ryan could be give an opportunity to play a biopic of him. He further jokes by saying that his greatest inspirations are Marge, Simpson’s sisters, Selma and Thelma. On a more serious note he is the director at One on One and has many things to be proud of together with his team as they celebrate their first year at Cliff Central. It may be early days however there is much more in the pipeline for the Cliff Central team. His achievements came at a price.

“The perception is that it’s all glamour

and fame. “It’s hard work and limited opportunity” he says.

Mr Cliff draws inspiration from a number of people however he reckons that Nelson Mandela is the only real celebrity out of South Africa. He views him as a true leader and remains inspired by him, the same reason he inspires the world. In the not so far future look out for the Cliff central App, unTV, a new book and more exciting projects in advertising and media. For now let us give Gareth a break. He could do with a short nap given his hectic schedule and all the interesting developments surfacing in his life. For the latest on Gareth Cliff follow him on twitter @ Gareth Cliff and face book.

DENIM

DOMINATION 29

I remember back in the day, if you did not own a pair of Levi’s you were not regarded as the most fashionable or trendiest. We thank Levi Strauss for his Aha Moment when in 1853 he decide to import denim fabric from France. Which he then used to create sturdy, solid trousers, that would later become the ubiquitous blue jeans. A writer for an American Fabrics magazine declared, Denim as the world’s oldest fabric however in every decade it did its rounds. Either revamped , up graded, distressed you name it .

M

In my home Town, Polokwane, distressed faded denim just tops the list amongst young people and a few of the oldies that are young at heart. You are probably thinking”Lady, I have a pair of jeans that I would love to transform.” I see you now can I get a wink ;-)

This process creates what various enthusiasts feel to be a more ‘natural’ look than the look of artificially distressed denim Jean, however a scissor can always come in handy when creating a distressed jean. Apart from distressed jeans Denim Pants(Jeans) come in various fits, includingSkinny, Straight. Bootleg. Flared. Slouch. Dungaree (delela) and Boyfriend jeans. Therefore any of these fits can found in a form of a distressed jean.

Since we all have different tastes one can explore the many silhouettes in Denim. From skirts, dresses, shirts, hats, caps made from denim and dyed using the indigo dye to create the blue colour. Jeans are now a very popular article of casual/smart attire. They can be worn to work, social events and it is up to you how you accessorise it.

How to get the DIY Distressed jeans? To facilitate the natural distressing process, some wearers of dry denim will abstain from washing their jeans for more than 6 months. That is the extent that many are willing to go to remain fashionable.

BEAUTY

TIPS AND TRICKS FROM SIBONGILE NKANYANE

Let us admit that our climate has not been loyal at all, coupled with the economical changes we have been experiencing. One can easily conclude that there has been some conspiracy planned against our skin. Many people have been subjected to endless skin problems. The majority of South African woman and man have a problem with dry and dehydrated skin. My concern though as a beauty specialist is that Individuals tend to confuse dehydrated skin to being dry. Those are two totally different effects: Dry Skin lacks moisture and Dehydrated Skin lacks water so, Yes, our skin needs some T.L.C. BUT WHAT CAUSES DRY SKIN IN THE FIRST PLACE? I have come across many that say that they were born with dry skin. Correction, no one is born with dry skin! If you look at a new born’s skin it is not dry instead it is the most hydrated skin one can ever find.

Fact : We produce new skin cells all the time so if you don’t use the correct skincare your skin is bound

to suffer. Dry skin is merely dead skin cells that have piled on top of new skin that needs to be “released”.

Exfoliation is part of removing dead skin cells, one should exfoliate once or twice a week.

Exfoliated skin helps your moisturizer to penetrate properly so your skin therefore remains hydrated.

The other popular question is – Can the skin stay moisturized longer and have a healthy glow. If you continue to keep your skin

37

moisturized ,of course your skin will have that glow bear in mind that dry skin ages quicker. Have you ever seen skin that glows in the dark? Then Try the exfoliating body scrub by Clarins (image on left) it can be used by both man and females your skin will feel soft, look hydrated and the smell is divine! I live by that body scrub.

AND WHAT ABOUT DEHYDRATED SKIN? Because of our climate and lifestyle 3 in every 5 people suffer from dehydrated at some point in their lives. DEHYDRATED skin lacks WATER most people think their skin is dry meanwhile it just lacks water.

Air cones, the wind, change of season, too much alcohol in the system, smoking and using the incorrect skincare dehydrates ones skin. Maintaining hydrated skin is really simple and what I love is that you can do that without even spending a fortune!

AND HERE ARE 4 WAYS THAT CAN HELP YOU KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED :

1 : WATER is very important to keep hydrated drink at least 8 glasses a day.

2: CUCUMBER helps hydrate your skin when you eat it also assist with reducing puffiness around the eyes. :

3. CELERY

is very high in water and not only that, it contains folate and vitamins A ,C and K. It also neutralizes stomach acid.

4. TOMATOES

an endeavour to create positive change between the ages of 14 and 28. The objective of Purple cows is to share unique opportunities and experiences that one may not ordinarily have access to with others, whether it be dining out, social investment and volunteerism or travelling. At the moment the group has 15 mentees who are in South Africa and in Beijing, China. There are two young ladies in matric at Waverly High School (Johannesburg), Lihle and Amanda, the rest of the mentees are in different universities. She would like to introduce these dynamic individuals to the world.

Moja Molefi is a young lady from Lesotho and is currently based in Beijing China, studying towards a BA in Economics and Chinese Language (2011-2015). She is a recent graduate fluent in Chinese, an avid marketer by profession with a penchant for creative writing and aspirations for greater involvement in social development efforts. Vuyelwa Diniso is studying a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Witwatersrand. She says “ I am a purple cow because, I am a driven individual who doesn’t believe in barely getting by but excelling, and I represent the idea that it’s possible.”

Tshepo Skosana who is studying towards a Bachelor in Laws degree at the University of the Witwatersrand says “I am a Purple Cow, because I believe that in order to learn you have to be willing to be humble, follow and modest. I believe that Ms Majola is an amazing spirit whom I know can/will nurture me. I believe that we are who we are when we are with the people who make us most alive, and Ms Majola is that person to me.
