CAREER PROFILE | LEGENDS IN MEDIA

T

The man investing his time sharing knowledge and information on Africa’s economic and business developments, thereby making Africa and its people his business. Give us a brief background of your educational background to date. I qualified as a science and biology teacher at the University of Limpopo in 1990, where I also completed a post-graduate degree in education in 1991. I then obtained a business management diploma at Damelin in 2001, and a Certificated Associate of the Institute of Bankers SA qualification in 2005. I am an MBA student at Wits. You spent the early years of your professional life as a teacher; what inspired the career move to media?

LEGENDS IN THE MEDIA SPHERE : VICTOR KGOMOESWANA Radio anchor of Power Hour on Power FM, weekly columnist for both African Independent and Sunday Independent, and TV anchor (Africa Business News on CNBC Africa); an independent consultant on Africa’s business developments, African business leader, author (Africa is Open for Business),conference speaker, community builder.

I had always wanted to use my speech to effect positive change in the lives of people; and I saw the media as the most effective channel to achieve that. Having been a public speaker most of my life, at least since 1981, I realised that through media one can reach more people with one production. As an African business leader you have been fortunate to engage with individuals from all walks of life. In your opinion, what advantage does South Africa have when you compare it to other nations socially and economically? South Africa has world class banking systems, leading accounting and reporting standards, the best investor-protection regime in Africa, the most sophisticated capital markets, a great legal system backed by an excellent constitution and the best infrastructure. Socially, we are about as resilient a nation as you are ever going to get.

ZINGCE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE | 05

VICTOR KGOMOESWANA We understand that you are also a supporter of Black business empowerment, which area do you feel needs more attention for black business to thrive? Two areas need serious attention: first, black people can make economic empowerment a reality by themselves if they jealously support one another and ‘buy black’; secondly, the government has to use its muscle to promote entrepreneurship in schools and aggressively steer its procurement expenditure to favour blackowned enterprises. Also, black entrepreneurs should educate themselves better about the business prospects beyond the borders of South Africa, especially on the continent. You recently won the African Titans Award. Briefly tell us what it is about, and what winning it means to you. Winning the award, for my contribution to Africa’s advancement through media, affirmed my commitment to the advancement of the African business gospel, something I had been doing for at least 10 years. Although hard work and self-discipline deliver the goods, affirmation by others serves to strengthen your resolve to do more. I was also the 2015 recipient of theOnkgopotseTiro Excellence Award from my Alma Mater, the University of Limpopo (Turfloop) – which meant a lot, because OnkgopotseTiro is a freedom stalwart and martyr; and being associated with him is the most humbling honour. Tiro, an alumnus of Turfloop, paid the ultimate price for his commitment to the liberation of South Africa. The award suggests that I could hope to come close to his stature if I keep on doing my best for the betterment of others.

You have a pool of knowledge and skills, how do you give back to young people to ensure that new leaders are raised? The most effective way is through my media work – as a radio anchor, newspaper columnist and TV presenter – to coach, motivate, guide and advise. I also make a lot of time to speak to young people one-on-one and through community organisations. I can think of no better way than being accessible to young people as much as possible. What is the one decision you have made that has changed your life forever? Heeding my father’s advice to read a lot and following my mother’s teachings to choose friends wisely. What advise would you give to aspiring radio presenters, in terms of connecting to listeners, ensuring that people remain loyal and listen to your show? Have something of practical value to offer, take feedback seriously, continuously improve yourself and be sincere. What valuable lessons have you learned from your travels around the world? How small I am. What new developments can we expect from you in 2016? Making my radio show an even more impactful economic empowerment platform and a probably new breakthrough on television.

ENTREPRENEURS | ENTREPRENEURS’ GUIDE TO WEALTH IN 2016

A

As an economic crisis looms in South Africa, JT FOXX aims to help entrepreneurs and property investors by giving business advice. What is the first step that entrepreneurs can do this year to pave a way for profitability within their businesses? Every entrepreneur has to know their numbers, if they don’t know their numbers there is no way that they can be profitable. It’s knowing what their hard costs are, what the margins are and where expenses can be cut or better pricing can be negotiated. When entrepreneurs just go with what they think is right it’s not going to work. Especially with what is going on with the Rand, cutting costs and increasing profits is absolutely key.

ENTREPRENEURS’ GUIDE TO WEALTH IN 2016 JT FOXX is known worldwide as a serial entrepreneur, a real estate investor and is considered one of the Top Speakers, strategists & the #1coach in business. He is also the founder of Mega Partnering and Mega Partnering Africa. Mega Partnering is regarded as the world’s wealth networking and business conference attracting attendees from all over the globe who come to learn, earn and return.

The rand has not been favourable lately and this has had a negative impact on most businesses. What advice/methods can you give to business owners as a way of persevering through difficult times? So now is the time to find ways to cut expenses, and maximize profits for your business. This is also a key time to market. Most people start to try and save money or cut from their marketing budget but that is not what is going to work in the long term. Those who stay consistent with their marketing, and continue to deliver an excellent product or service that makes their clients happy will come out on top. It’s also more important then ever to focus on delivering ‘WOW” experience and making sure your clients are happy.

ZINGCE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE | 09

JT FOXX How can emerging businesses build their clientele? Networking is essential. You have to connect with people to help drive business. Through networking you want to find strategic partnerships, these would be businesses that can refer business to you and you can refer people back to them. This will be a huge help in starting to build your business. Building your brand is so important, when you have a brand you have people coming to you. So from day 1 you want to always be thinking about building your personal and business brand. We are aware that the success of most businesses lies in a good marketing strategy. Do you have one for our readers that can add value to their businesses? Without marketing and branding you would have nothing. To create not just a good marketing strategy, but a great one you need to look at what others are doing to drive success in your niche. Then you need to be able to measure results; the formula that you have to live by is 3x. For every Rand you spend you need to make 3x that amount, otherwise the ROI isn’t there and it’s not working. If you measure and test everything and stick to that rule you will have success. My other key in marketing is to always think that you are talking to ‘Homer Simpson’ from the Simpsons…. Or maybe if I say you need to keep it simple enough for a 5 year old to understand. If your messaging isn’t simple enough your customers have to think too hard about it and will move on. So remember to keep it simple and to the point. Then test, test,

and test some more. Always keep testing your marketing by changing 1 thing at a time to optimize your marketing to get the best results possible. What advice can you give to established business people that will take their business to the next level, whereby they invest cash to make profit this year? Advanced or just starting, the first step is to know the numbers. You have to have things tied to measurable goals, and where possible have staff on incentivized pay so everyone is tied to reaching the goals. When your team has some buy- in it makes it easier to get everyone on board to getting there. An added result to knowing numbers in established business to know what can be cut. Often there is a product or service that isn’t generating a profit so it doesn’t make sense to keep it. As a business owner you often think you know something but if you don’t have the numbers or the analytics you don’t have anything. This year I am focused more then ever on not only helping people start business, but profitable businesses. So for people starting or those with years of experience the way we all get better and drive increased profits is getting more in tune with our numbers. Its something my coach Mark Norcross has me focused on, so I want to help all the business that I work with do you the same: to really make a profit in 2016.

Insulin is a hormone produced for the pancreas for the regulation of carbohydrates or sugars by promoting absorption of glucose from blood to skeletal muscle and fat tissue.

There are three types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes (a condition where the body stops producing insulin, an essential hormone produced by the pancreas to convert glucose into energy); Type 2 diabetes (a condition that develops over time where the body is unable to use insulin properly); and Gestational diabetes (a form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy due to hormonal changes, genetics and lifestyle factors). The majority of people in South Africa have type 2 diabetes, however many of these cases go undiagnosed as there are very few symptoms initially.

BREAKOUT ARTIST

NATHI MANKAYI SHARES HIS STORY WITH ZINGCE WRITTEN BY NGAWETHU KA-SIPHIWO

S

He saw the “ crime world” as an option whereby he could put food on the table for his family and buy an extra pair of school shoes for his sister so that they didn’t have to share shoes to go to school.. While enjoying the benefits of crime his luck ran out as him and his gang mates where prosecuted for attempted murder.

South Africa has been graced with a golden voice that has mesmerized children and the older generation. One would swear that there was a massive competition amongst radio stations on how many times the new national anthem _Nomvula, would receive air play. From the dusty streets of Maclear, Eastern Cape to the bright city lights of Johannesburg. Metro Fm Nominee Nathi Mankayi finally got his breakthrough in the music industry. He’s been touring non-stop, performing at high profile events, regular interviews which is any performing artist’s dream. He is indeed making the world his oyster. Like fine gold, Nathi had to be refined and the best in him has emerged. His life has done a 180 degree turn all for the better. It is hard to believe that he was once subjected to a life of crime and poverty was second nature. Born to a family that did not have much, Nathi decided to join a number gang and became a 28 which made him famous for all the wrong reasons.

A robbery that went awry, one of his gang mates decided to kill the man that they where robbing who belonged to a different gang. The gun unexpectedly jammed as he tried to pull the trigger which forced all three of them to flee. However the following day they where individually arrested for attempted murder and robbery. Seven months later while in remand custody Nathi and fellow prisoners broke out of prison. He fled to Johannesburg because his face and details of the escape were broadcasted on print news and radio in the Eastern Cape at the time. As he arrived in Johannesburg local gangsters took him in. He started understanding the dark world of Hillbrow and Braamfontein. In the mist of all the confusion and crime activities, at the end of the day that was the life he knew. He met other musicians, soon he was rehearsing and producing songs with them, his mindset shifted completely.

He hoped for the best outcome because music was his main priority. Four years after his escape, he went back to Maclear , visits his mother who was a street vendor. He informed her that he was turning himself in and should she want to visit him , she can do so in prison. After all, he had to take responsibility for his actions. As he returned to the police station where he escaped , he realizes that all the other escapees had been caught besides him. Nathi was sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in the attempted murder and armed robbery with an additional six months in prison for his escape.

Music became his first love, his way of escaping, he spent time writing songs and reflecting on life. He then built his confidence which led him in deciding to go for auditions on Jam Alley. Unfortunately he got arrested enroute to the auditions this time for being in a first class carriage instead of the second class carriage. Before anyone could discover who he was and what he is wanted for, he was released. Nathi made a conscious decision that if he wants to have a career in music he needs to hand himself over to the police.

He served four years in jail, nurturing his love for fine art and music. His family was the reason for his perseverance, raised by a single parent with five siblings there had to be light at the end of the tunnel.

In 2014 Vusi Nova heard Nathi sing and suggested they do a song together. “Noma Kanjani ended up being that song. Through that once in a life time opportunity Muthaland (Ghetto Ruff) released his debut CD Buyelekhaya.

Crime has become a solution for many that come from backgrounds full of poverty. However it is about choices as crime is not worth it at the end of the day. One needs to rise up and explore other avenues, talent was what liberated Nathi. He paid the price for his freedom. What price are you willing to pay to follow your dreams? SPIRITUALITY | GOD’S GRACE

C

Contained in this Grace is the help we need for all things because the finished work of the cross by the second Adam, Jesus, restored all things to us that pertains to life. If we are to ever FIND this GRACE to help us in our time of need then it might not be a bad idea to come to God the way He requires us to in the above scripture. APPROACH: This is telling us that we need to come to God in our time of need not God come to us.

THRONE OF GRACE:

MARTIN BRAUM TALKS ABOUT GOD’S GRACE

Hebrews 4 vs 16 (NIV) 16 “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

This is telling us that GOD is this GRACE that is upon the throne and that this GRACE rules, is supreme and reigns as a king. We are to come before our King and receive mercy (the forgiveness of sin and the restoration of Righteousness) and FIND Grace to help us in our time of need.

CONFIDENCE (FAITH): Approach God’s throne of GRACE with confidence not crawling on our hands and knees begging God to intervene and do something on our behalf. We are to come to God with confidence in our time of need.

ZINGCE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE | 33

MARTIN BRAUM

Confidence is “God I am coming to You, approaching Your Throne knowing that You will help me”.

This GRACE is to help us get out of something that we find ourselves in and God is saying stand up and come to me knowing that I will be there for you. God will not help us while we are in self-pity and crying out for help. Confidence is “God I am coming to You, approaching Your throne knowing that You will help me”.

RECEIVE MERCY: (RIGHTEOUSNESS) Mercy in God’s word always refers to the forgiveness of sin and the restoration of RIGHTEOUSNESS. This approaching the throne of GRACE with confidence is to first RECEIVE MERCY the forgiveness of our sin and the moment this happens our RIGHTEOUSNESS is restored and GRACE may once again be our portion.

FIND GRACE TO HELP US (GRACE): This word FIND is highly important in understanding this GRACE God supplies to help us in our time of need. God does not say He gives us this GRACE He says we need to FIND IT once we have received mercy. We FIND this GRACE in His throne room nowhere else. We have to approach the throne of grace with confidence to receive mercy so that we may find this grace. This Grace is His divine influence upon our heart and the reflection of it in our life. Grace will always bring about change and having found it we must apply this Grace to our situation that needs help. AMEN.

SPORT | THE GENTLEMAN’S GAME No, I had played some form of this game before, but I used my hand to hit a tennis ball and run between to previously designated lines to score points while the opposition can either catch the ball after you hit it or tag you with the ball. I was quite good at that game in my neighbourhood so…I was interested. As luck would have it the coach said I had a very fast grasp of the game and could play in his team if I carried on practising that was the second moment that convinced me I should give the game a fair go. Cricket had two formats in my time, a Test which is played over five days and a One Day International (ODI’s) match which is played in one day limited to fifty over (three hundred and sixty legal balls thrown at the batsman). Now there’s an addition of a format called T20, owing it’s name to the fact that it is played with a limit of twenty overs instead of fifty.

The impact has not only proved to have adverse effects psychologically, however socio- economically as well as emotionally. Statistics show that more than onethird (34.8%) lived with both parents. Based on the above stats, fathers play little role in their children’s lives.

Cool Dads Foundation is a foundation that was started by Bongani Luvalo ,who is the executive director of the foundation.
