HOW TO EXCEL AT SIXTH FORM Former Sixth Form student, Holly Sawyer compiled a selection of top tips to help you excel during your time at Sixth Form:
1. Talk to current Sixth Form students and teachers to find out more about the subjects that you may want to take 2. Find out how the grades for subjects are weighted by exams and coursework, it is important to consider your strengths 3. Choose subjects that interest you and you find enjoyable 4. Look at what qualifications the career that you are thinking of perusing requires 5. Stay on top of your work 6. Use free periods wisely 7. Create a checklist for topics within your subjects to help organise your revision 8. Start revision earlier rather than later 9. Ensure you eat and drink enough during the day to keep your concentration and energy levels up 10. Use folders to separate your work by subjects 11. Most importantly, relax.
Life @ SIXTH FORM
In addition to providing a strong curriculum programme, we believe it is important to facilitate a range of opportunities that helps develop students into socially well-rounded individuals. Our vibrant community gives students confidence and once in a lifetime experiences in order to excel. The Sixth Form committee organise events in venues across Bristol, such as a gore-inspired Halloween celebration, a festive Christmas Social and an eighties extravaganza.
Community projects
The Sixth Form also encourages fundraising events which allows students to develop new skills and do something great for the community.
Academic Support and Guidance
Students need dedicated focus and attention throughout their studies. In addition to tutor group and Guild Head support, students can also rely on a strong Pastoral and SEND team.
The Bourne Performers
Combines the talents of staff and students for a range of performances in dance, music, media documentaries and programme design.
Trips and Experiences
Our Sixth Formers are given the opportunity to travel the world to enrich their academic experience and prepare them for their future as global citizens. Past trips have allowed students to explore how the business world of New York works; sample culture in Spain; develop school projects in Mexico; and build a sensory wall for blind children in India!
Sport and Leisure
Our students benefit from a fantastic range of sports facilities, including an all-weather pitch, a large sport hall, gymnasium, sports pitches and a swimming pool.
There is a real community feel at our Sixth Form; the Year 13s help the Year 12s to make the step from GCSEs to A-Levels.
STUDENT MEXICO PROJECT We have links with host schools in Merida, Mexico. Many students get the opportunity to stay with Spanish speaking host families and integrate themselves into their day-to-day routines. Throughout the trip our students participate in a number of cultural and educational visits, including the Mayan Ruins, various museums, and visiting flamingos in an ecological wildlife reserve. A major part of the visit is the charity work the students do with a primary school in the village of Mocochá. Since working with the school we have completely transformed and rebuilt their outdoor play area, we also helped provide valuable teaching and learning resources. The trip allows students to practise their Spanish, grasp the experience of a new culture, become independent and gain teamwork and commitment skills.
“The trip allowed us to experience new and different cultures” Hannah Clark, Student.
FEATURES INDIA PROJECT
A group of fifteen students from Winterbourne International Academy travelled to India in October 2015 to partake in both an exchange and community charity project. Four thousand pounds was raised for the Shri Harsha Mishra Memorial School for the Deaf in order to continue with the essential work that they do, giving education to children that may otherwise be left without any schooling whatsoever. The India exchange project is a great way for our students to experience a culture that is very different to their own. Lasting friendships are forged during the exchange and our first cohort of students are still in touch with their Indian friends even now they are at university. It is a fantastic experience which makes a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged children in Orissa.
“Visiting India was an incredible experience, exceeding every expectation I once had of the country and is a place I sincerely hope to return to” Anna Ley, Student.

ALUMINI JESS HOPTON: NATIONAL BADMINTON CHAMPTION “Trying to incorporate an elite athlete programme with three A-Levels was always going to be a steep challenge for me. I was concerned about how this pressure and work-load would affect both my sporting and academic performance and whether I would be unable to complete either of them to the standard I was hoping for. All of my teachers, my Head of Year and Head of Sixth Form were fantastic in aiding me to reach my goals and aspirations in both areas. They were always more than happy to help me catch up on missed lessons due to tournaments and were so supportive and understanding of my situation. Their help and support secured me AAB in Law, Economics and Maths and a place at Loughborough University to study Financial Mathematics. At the same time I helped Team England secure a silver medal at the European Junior Championships. WIA really helped me achieve what I thought was the unachievable and I would recommend the sixth form to any individual who wants to achieve their dreams too.”
DAVE ATTWOOD: PROFESSIONAL RUGBY UNION INTERNATIONAL
NATHAN FILER: COSTA BOOK OF THE YEAR WINNER
ALUMINI LEVANNA MCLEAN: FACE OF NORTHEN SOUL
JOE PADDON: LEFT 2015
‘My offer to read Law at the London School of Economics was A*AA. Initially, I was dubious about applying to such a demanding university, but my teachers saw my potential and urged me to apply. Having just completed my first year at LSE, I can say that I have lived the luxury of London! However, this would also not have been possible had my Head of Year and Head of Sixth Form not pushed me to apply for the CMS Cameron McKenna Bursary Scheme. For this I had to take part in an essay competition, an assessment day and an interview at the law firm. Winning this financial bursary of £2,500-a-year for the duration of my course, has proven invaluable to my living in London. Without it, I would not be studying there! Consequently, without the help and assistance of my teachers at TRFWIA, I may not have applied to LSE, or the Bursary – I am, therefore, truly indebted to them for their guidance and support.’
