Gurney Pease Academy, Darlington, invited internationally celebrated author and illustrator Liz Million to launch its Reading Shed after discovering her grandfather used to be the headmaster of the school. After cutting the ribbon outside the timber shed, which has been fitted out with soft furnishing and fairy lights, she read Year 3 pupils a story and drew some original artwork for the walls based on her latest

books, The Durham Ox and There’s a Crocodile in my House. She said: “I have always had an affiliation with Gurney Pease because my Grandpa Philip Sefton was head here and I remember visiting as a child. “Reading is so important and as soon as you find a book that is right for you, you will be taken on a magical journey.” The school also received a donation from Exact Education recruitment consultant Nick Liversedge, which will be used towards equipping the shed.

MAYOR ANNOUNCES MAJOR STEP FORWARD FOR DARLINGTON STATION TRANSFORMATION Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has announced that a bid has been submitted to Government for funding to dramatically overhaul Darlington railway station. The redevelopment of Darlington station will cost up to £100million and, at a meeting of the Darlington Station Programme Board, it was agreed that the outline business case that has been developed to support the project be sent to Government to make the project a reality. A total of £25million had previously been earmarked by the Mayor and Tees Valley Combined Authority to help deliver the vision for the station, with plans for its use being put to Darlington Borough Council for approval next week. If the funding is signed off by Government, the redevelopment will also create new train platforms for an improved local and national service and futureproofing the station for future HS2 services. Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Today we have submitted our fully worked-up case for Darlington station to the Department of Transport. This is a major step forward in delivering this vital project, a project that will make travel to, from and around the Tees Valley easier and better than ever.

“I’ve already committed £25million to kick-start the work, but there is still more to be done. Now it’s down to Whitehall to put its money where its mouth is and invest in these much-needed improvements. “Our plan to transform Darlington station would cut journey times, improve regional transport links and give visitors an incredible welcome to the area. I’ve been making the case for Darlington station from day one and I’ll continue to push for these critical improvements until spades are in the ground.” The scheme would also see improvements to the fabric of the station, including improved entrances, and the regeneration of the wider area around the station. Once complete, the upgraded station will unlock capacity across the area leading to faster, more frequent and better quality services in Tees Valley. It will also allow for better freight connections from Teesport, and prepare the station for high-speed services and Northern Powerhouse Rail. Cllr Heather Scott, Tees Valley Combined Authority Cabinet Lead for Transport and Leader of Darlington Borough Council, said: “These exciting plans to transform our station will go to Darlington Council Cabinet for consideration next week.

“Our local people and businesses deserve high-quality, efficient, reliable and regular transport links, and these plans will go a long way in making sure they get that. “The 200-year anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway is fast approaching, and we’re seeing a lot of new opportunities being created in Darlington, such as the National Horizons Centre and Feethams House, as well as across all the corners of the Tees Valley. This transformation would give us a station our whole region could be proud of.” Paul McKeown, Investment Director for Network Rail, said: “We have been working closely with the Tees Valley Mayor, Combined Authority and Darlington Borough Council on these exciting plans to improve the railway for all passengers. “This scheme would improve connectivity across the Tees Valley, as well as create a station which is a fitting gateway to the region.” The board is made up of the Tees Valley Mayor, officials and elected members of the Combined Authority and Darlington Borough Council, and project partners including Network Rail, LNER and Homes England. The Cat and the Canary:

Britt Ekland

Q&A

The star of stage and screen tells us about her latest challenge, appearing in spine-tingling tale The Cat and the Canary which comes to Darlington Hippodrome for a week-long run in March. Hi Britt. You’re starring in thriller The Cat and the Canary. What’s the play about? It’s a story about a big, deserted mansion on the Bodmin Moor. The owner died 20 years earlier and he has instructed his solicitors to assemble all the possible heirs to go through the will. There’s an assortment of people from all over the world that come into this spooky house, and loads of surprises ensue from the start. It is an interesting story with many twists and turns. It’s very much in the tradition of Agatha Christie and the type of thriller British audiences love. I think our audiences will get a big surprise and that’s all I’m going to say. What made you want to be part of this production? First, I’m always up for a challenge. I always have been. I have done almost everything you can think of in my career. This is definitely not a role I’m used to; this play is not a farce, for a start! It’s something a bit more challenging for me. 14 | Darlington Today

Fantastic. So, who are you playing? I play the housekeeper. She has been in this house alone for 20 years before this midnight meeting with all the assembled heirs and the solicitor. She’s probably had quite a solitary life and had to find ways of surviving that solitude, the cold and the war. She hasn’t had any physical company, but she feels she has had spiritual company. She’s very stern. Her job is to guard this house until the heir takes it over and that’s what she’s done for 20 years. What makes this such a challenge for you? I haven’t been on stage since my last panto in 2013. And I was never a rep actor – I was a movie star. I finished school when I was 17 and went to drama school for two years, then toured with a variety show and did a film in Rome. The next thing I know, I have a contract with Twentieth Century Fox and I’m sent to London. That’s where I meet Peter Sellers and marry him. Although I wanted to be on stage, being a movie star didn’t hold the prestige of being a good stage actor – not in Sweden where I came from. I don’t have the background that most actors my age have, which is my main challenge on this tour.

You’ve been working for more than 60 years. How do you keep yourself fit enough to tour? I’m very fortunate that I’ve always worked out. In March 2018, I did Strictly Come Dancing in Sweden as the oldest participant ever. But I don’t take anything for granted. You have to be alert and stay on top of everything. A lot of this is your own mental attitude to life as well, not just what you eat and how you move. You have to have a very mobile mental attitude. That sounds like a fantastic philosophy. As you get older and what you look like matters less, you’ve got to challenge yourself to stay relevant and continue working. I could just sit down with a cup of tea and biscuits and watch television… but I don’t do that! The Cat and The Canary runs at Darlington Hippodrome from Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 March. To book call the box office on 01325 405405 or visit www.darlingtonhippodrome.co.uk

ADOPTING SOLO AND LOVING IT Growing up many of us dream of the fantasy future, marriage, children, a lovely home. The comforting thought of two parents and the ‘perfect’ family setting. For Allison Cowen, there was once this same vision of the ideal life. Belonging to a large family, Allison knew that she’d always have her family and friends by her side but as she got older, she realised that maybe marriage and kids wasn’t the only path you could take. “I always knew I’d have my own children, but I also knew I’d care for children that couldn’t be cared for by their own parents because I have three foster siblings and my Grandma was adopted. I learnt that a family wasn’t ready made and your family can come from anywhere and be anyone.” Allison explained. The Mum of four from Chester le Street had thought marriage and a young family would be how her life would develop but when she reached her 30’s single and with no children, she knew she didn’t need a partner or a husband, she didn’t need the ideal setting. All she needed was a child who needed her, and her adoption journey began. “I realised in my mid 30’s that this supposed ‘perfect’ scenario was not relevant or important – I was in a position on my own to love and care for a child who needed me.” She said. Months of research and preparation followed before Allison sent her initial adoption enquiry and shared her desire with family and friends. Allison explained, “I told my close friends at a girl’s night in, they were overjoyed for me and said they would support me every step of the way. I shared the news with my immediate family during Sunday dinner,

again they were amazingly supportive, but they were realistic – parenthood wasn’t an easy job and certainly not when doing it alone.” Allison found the adoption process nervewracking and at times frustrating. Making friends with another sole adopter, Louise, during the training process was a great benefit which Allison is thankful for. She explains, “I’m grateful that I met some wonderful people during the adoption process, some in the same situation as me and others with completely different circumstances. It was a relief to share that experience and those emotions with people who were feeling the same as you.” Once approved to adopt a child with her local authority, Allison began the matching process – the most heart-breaking but equally uplifting journey to date. When a prospective adopter is approved, they are invited to attend events which are designed to give adopters the opportunity to meet the children currently in need of a loving family. Allison added, “Some of my initial interests in children didn’t progress as other families were a better match, but I waited patiently, until one day in March my social worker contacted me about a little boy who was one and had minor additional needs, his name was Thomas. As soon as I read his profile, I knew I wanted to be this child’s Mum. ‘I just burst in to tears, I could not wait to love him and to give him everything he needed.’ The next few months were spent meeting professionals including paediatricians and social workers and of course Thomas’ foster parents whom he’d lived with since four days old. “I absolutely loved meeting the family who cared for Thomas from the beginning, they brought him to life with their stories of him and as soon as I saw a photograph of him, I fell in love – he was meant to be MY son!” 10 weeks after Thomas went to live with Allison, the adoption order was granted in court. ‘I hugged my boy so tight and just remember repeatedly saying “I’m your Mam’.”

Since the adoption was finalised, life for Allison and Thomas has changed unrecognisably. “I started this journey on my own and I wouldn’t change a thing, I had the full support and love of my family and friends and the passion to give a child a family but as life unfolded our family grew and I could not be more grateful.” After a year of being Mum to Thomas, Allison met Paul, a father of two. In July this year, the family welcomed new addition, baby Joshua, Mark and Allison’s biological child and the family have blended beautifully. “We have grown in to a big family, the children all love each other, and Thomas adores his Daddy and his brothers and sister. Reflecting on the adoption process and the rollercoaster of emotions, Allison says, “Without the support and encouragement from my family and friends I would not have adopted my wonderful son. Meeting life long friends such as Louise was the best thing to help me through the adoption process. I am very thankful, and I feel privileged to be able to call Thomas my son. “To be able to adopt a child, especially a child with behavioural issues or a learning difficulty you need to be determined, to have empathy and be honest about what you can take on, but the most important things are to have a loving heart and mind and you’ll be amazing.” If you would like to find out more information about adopting with Durham County Council, come along to a coffee and chat event at Costa Coffee, Cornmill centre, Darlington on Friday 7 February 12pm – 2pm, alternatively please visit durham.gov.uk/adoption or find the service on Facebook @DurhamFosterAdopt.

Over 1,700 trees were collected by volunteers from homes across Darlington, raising thousands of pounds for St Teresa’s Hospice.

Rotary organiser David Hayward said: “Thanks to the generosity of local residents we raised over £12,000 in just one day of collecting.

Waved off by the new Darlington MP Peter Gibson, Darlington Rotary president Sue Campbell and St Teresa’s Hospice honorary president Alasdair MacConachie, a team of 70 Rotarians took to the streets in a fleet of vans to pick up the trees for recycling into garden fertilizer.

“This is the ninth year that the Rotary Club has been involved in the collection of Christmas trees raising over £59,000 for the hospice to date.”

Residents who booked a collection were asked to make a minimum donation of £6 to help support the Hospice, which

St Teresa’s Hospice chief executive Jane Bradshaw said: “Once again we have had an incredibly positive response to our tree-cycling scheme. “I would like to thank all the volunteers for giving up their time to take part in the collection and our corporate and community supporters, and Darlington Rotary Club in particular, without whom none of this would be possible. “And finally thank you to everyone who made a booking for us to collect their tree and help us raise much-needed funds for our hospice.”

EAST IS BEST…. Bernice Saltzer continues her love affair with Asia and chalks up two new countries to knock off her bucket list… I love the Far East. Some of the best – scrub that – THE best holidays I’ve ever had have been visiting these countries. From the style and elegance of Singapore to the madness of Hong Kong to the tourist traps of Thailand, we’ve embraced them all. But I have to say that I have now found a new place in my heart for two other countries- Cambodia and Vietnam. We decided on an epic adventure that would take us almost three weeks, which ended up involving eight flights, a variety of cities – and some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. First port of call was a few days in Siem Reap in Cambodia, a pit stop for many people so they can visit the temples of Angkor Wat – the largest religious monument in the world. 28 | Darlington Today

Dating back hundreds of years, you can only gasp at this amazing feat of engineering and the sheer size and beauty of it. Even the blistering heat can’t detract from its sheer majesty – one of the many temples that this relatively small area has to offer. It may now be a tourist destination but Cambodia’s terrible past is never far from your thoughts – and nor should it be. Anyone visiting should make time to visit one of the killing fields, where the population were decimated under the Khmer Rouge. We had to seek one out as they aren’t widely promoted but it’s about ensuring that the victims of this terrible regime are not forgotten and that we pay our respects. We met one man who had miraculously survived but the torture he endured was beyond belief. Leaving Cambodia behind us, we headed to Vietnam and our first stop

– the craziness that is Hanoi. With a population of around 7 million, it has 5 million scooters so you take your life in your hands whenever you cross the road – but that’s all part of the fun. We made two trips to Hanoi, interspersed with a visit to a Vietnam must-see- Hoi An. Voted “the most beautiful city in the world”, it is the East’s equivalent of Venice with a number of canals and lanterns at every turning – on the roads, in front of restaurants, on the water – absolutely breathtaking. We stayed at the exquisite Hotel Royal, the perfect spot from which to visit everything Hoi An has to offer. Stylish rooms, great food and impeccable service – there’s even a mini casino! After our stay in Hoi An we returned back to Hanoi, where we headed

out for a day trip to the magnificent Halong Bay. Emerald waters, towering limestone islands and rain forests combine to make you in awe of nature which you can share for a few hours on a boat trip -or even longer if you opt to stay overnight. We ended our holiday on the island of Phu Quoc, an hour by plane from Hanoi and which is likely to be the next major destination in its own right. Stunning beaches and attractions such as the world’s longest cable car (25 minutes from end to end if you have the nerve) a vibrant night market and great restaurants make this a go-to place – and judging by the amount of hotels being created I’m not the only one to think that. Vietnam and Cambodia are countries with so much to offer -add them to your bucket list, you won’t be disappointed!

DIY Divorce- Formally Record the Financial Arrangements Over the course of a marriage or civil partnership, the financial affairs of couples are often intrinsically entwined with a jointly owned home, joint savings and or loans, together with accounts and pensions held individually. In addition, when you factor in monthly household commitments like utilities, phone and TV subscription packages, the prospect of unravelling financial affairs on a separation can seem extremely daunting but is a vital consideration when deciding to separate. The decision to separate may be mutual, or instigated by one party to the relationship, with a couple then reaching agreement amicably over their financial affairs. This could include agreement between the couple over any child maintenance payments that one party may pay to the other. Whilst reaching agreement amicably over separation, finances and custody of any children can make a separation less hostile, any informal agreement over the finances has no legal basis and so couples would normally seek

the assistance of a solicitor to prepare a Consent Order. This is a legally binding document that records the agreement reached between the parties regarding their assets, debt and income. A Consent Order is usually issued without anyone having to attend Court although the Court will consider if the arrangement is fair and may not grant the Order if it is significantly detrimental to one of the parties. Your solicitor would normally have considered this with you when seeking assistance to draw up a Consent Order. Whilst many couples choose to take a DIY approach to separation, it is vitally important to consider a Consent Order to record the financial arrangement reached to ensure a clean break and ensure an ex will not be able to make a claim against you in the future for any change in circumstances, assets or income you may earn or receive which can provide vital peace of mind. Our expert Family team can advise on Consent Orders together with all areas of a Divorce in complete confidence.
