Set the Stage When documenting a built environment as the central focus of a video, it is important for us imagine that space from the perspective of the user, rather than the designer. Following a physical narrative from exterior to interior, circluating through corridors, and arrival at significant spaces brings a familiar experience to viewers. For VRBO D11, which is located in Austin, TX, it felt necessary to extend that narrative to the greater city. Giving context of the surrounding cityscape, environment, and local culture conveys a heightened sense of understanding of the immediate project, as well as the client and brand ethos.

Change Scale The project encompasses 9 floors and over 300,000 square feet of space, which meant that strategies needed to be put in place on how best to capture the core ideas behind the designs, not simply covering as much ground as possible. Gaining an understanding of the project through conversations with the design team, as well as implementing some classic cinematography tools, allowed our video team to capture moments of detail throughout the project that represented the larger ideas of each space. Using close-up shots of key moments interspersed with wider shots helped communicate the design intent.

Different Points of View Much like showing the project’s context to establish place and culture, it was important to also show how the project was designed from different vantage points. One way to accomplish this was by capturing the project at various points throughout the day, which brought different qualities of light in the space and represented the passage of time for various user groups. The second was so find new vantage points. In this case, we utilized our in-house licensed drone pilots to get aerial views of the project at dusk, when the intended effects of the design became evident from the exterior, through bands of color.

Building a Hopeful Tomorrow

ELLISON INSTITUTE Location Los Angeles, CA Project Type Fundraising Video

Services Provided Client Interviews Process Documentation Project Documentation Drone Filming Motion Graphics Animation 41

Video Production | RIOS

Documenting the Process For the Ellison Institute, video production began early on in the construction process, as the video needed to promote the project for fundraising, as well as to attract prospective collaborators across multiple fields of work. Not only was the construction process documented, but also significant design meetings between the client and design team, renderings, and drawings.

Animated Motion Graphics Although many diagrams and drawings were created as static presentation tools by the design team, some of these graphics communicated larger ideas that were necessary for the video. Our in-house video team translated these drawings into motion graphics, which were then paired with voice-over in post-production to tell a more compelling story.

One, Two, and Three-Camera Interviews For this project, the narrative of the video required interviews with six senior staff at the institute, as well as an interview with the principal architect from the design team. While each interview had set questions, the video needed unscripted and genuine responses, which meant less control over their duration. Strategies were implemented during filming to allow for edits in the dialogue, without appearing spliced together. By using two cameras on the same subject, cuts could seamlessly transition to a later part of the dialogue, minimizing a visual jump. In the event that additional voice-over was needed within the same dialogue, a third camera was implemented to get close-up shots of the subject’s hands, avoiding their face where mouth movement would otherwise not align with the additional audio.

A Proven Marriage of Function and Design

NOTNEUTRAL LINO LINE Location Los Angeles, CA Project Type Brand Story Video

Show Don’t Tell Whether the product is in testing or has been on the market for years, we believe the best way to sell a product is to show it in use. For LINO, the focus wasn’t merely to prove that the product works, we needed to show an intimate familiarity with the product as an extension of the barista. On-location filming took place at local coffee shops, using real baristas who already used and were familiar with the LINO cups, showing the product in its natural habitat.

Why It’s Different The LINO line was designed not simply to be another vessel that holds liquid, but to solve a very important problem in the specialty coffee industry. Until now, most products that were found on shelves did not offer a pleasurable experience for the barista or the customer, they simply served coffee. The story of LINO showcases a transformation, by showing the reimagined curved interior for smoother pouring, the thicker base to help keep beverages warm, and the radiused edge for better lip feel. Probably the most significant design element to the cups are the handle, which seems as though it is pulled from the cup itself, rather than attached to the side. Through access to a 3D model and digital animation, we were able to better show these elements of the cup design.

Part of the Community With LINO being in production for over a decade, stocked in thousands of cafes around the globe, and one of the most popular ceramic products in the specialty coffee industry, we wanted to show this vast community as much as possible. Although budget restrictions meant that video production needed to remain local to Los Angeles, there was no shortage of shops to choose from. The message was clear, LINO is a tried and true leader in the coffee community.

A Growing Home With over 30 years of legacy, telling the story of RIOS is an everevolving ambition. Our efforts to document projects, process, and collaboration grows with our work and clients, and the space in which this takes place is as much an entity as the people who work within it. Our home in Leimert Park is constantly changing — as much as the space transformed from construction to move-in, each day brings new activity and interest to document and share with the world.

A Culture of Making The model shop at RIOS is a direct extension of the rest of the office, and the testing grounds for our design experimentation at multiple scales, from in-house furniture fabrication and scale model building, to full-scale graphics mock-ups and room layouts. With continued improvements, construction, and prototyping happening in our space, our video production efforts look inward for inspiration and content as much as we do the extended community.

Collaboration Ultimately, it is the people behind the projects that define RIOS. With a vast team ranging across several disciplines, we continue to grow and diversify. Telling our story is incomplete without the voices of these people, and documenting our collaboration and interactions together, whether close or from afar, remains one of the most educating and informative ambitions we have set about doing, a wealth of knowledge that extends itself to our greater work.
