inter has only just arrived but we are thinking ahead to what we’re going to wear to the 2014 Spring Carnival at Morphettville Racecourse. Save the date for a series of exciting race days at Morphetville Racecourse, including Melbourne Cup Day, which features a live concert from Guy Sebastian. A word of warning ladies, dress to impress because Fashion at The Races will be looking out for the most stylish racegoers to enter their statewide competition. So be sure to write these dates down in your fashion diaries.

BNKR STORE

T

he hugely anticipated BNKR flagship store has finally opened on the corner of Pultney Street and Rundle Mall. Stocking their in-house labels including Cameo, Finders Keepers, Keepsake, Jaggar and The Fifth Label, as well as Windsor Smith and Sol Sana, it is quickly becoming Adelaide’s go-to fashion destination. The enormous fit-out was designed by local Adam Johnson, and the visual interior by Emma Sadie Thompson, and looks more like a large scale art installation and gallery, than a regular boutique. Garments are displayed on floating

racks, suspended from the ceiling, which hover theatrically over the polished concrete floors. The proud neon BNKR sign out the front gives the industrial space warmth and light. BIRDCAGE BOUTIQUE NEW NEST THE BIRDCAGE HAS CONSOLIDATED ITS RUNDLE STREET AND NORWOOD STORES TO A LARGER PREMISE TO CATER TO THE GROWING BUSINESS.

he boutique started in 2006 as a small endeavour by mother and daughter team, Deb Garland and Rebecca Hoffman, which quickly grew with the second store two years later. After eight years, it is time to expand.“We have outgrown the small store concept, struggling to showcase all our designers’ product,” says Rebecca. Birdcage started out selling cheaper brands but over the years they have moved to a selection of exclusive Australian designers like Cameo, Finders Keepers, MLM, Tigerlily, May The Label and Lover. Although they are increasing in size, the Birdcage manifesto is unaltered. The same superior and personal customer service and styling is still key to the boutique.

asper&Pearl’s latest collection ‘Sweet Heart High’ sees the young label come of age, maturing itself into a global brand while maintaining the youthful look it is known and loved for.

iham could not be more thrilled with landing the dream opportunity and described it as a bit of a “pinch yourself” moment in her life. “It’s a great honour to lead such a successful, well-established label where I can continue to push boundaries and explore new possibilities for the brand. I feel very blessed and completely overwhelmed with all the support I’ve received,” Siham explains. Siham has worked alongside former head designer, Kathryn Forth, for almost three years and has played a huge role in catapulting the label. Since the label’s inception, Cameo has taken the fashion world by storm. Their consistent delivery of some of the most über-chic and covetable designs have earned the brand a cult following – even garnering the attention of some of fashion’s

leading females around the world such as Kim Kardashian and Whitney Port. As Siham now steps up to take on the top position with the label, she hopes to carry on down this road of success by keeping Cameo’s signature aesthetic while bringing in some exciting new visions. “The core Cameo aesthetic will be maintained, but with a new, fresh vision. he 2014 Adelaide Fashion Festival promises to be their biggest to date as it heads in to the seventh consecutive year with an exciting 10-day program from 17-26 October. The AFF features 17 high profile fashion events and will showcase 12 designers. The Emerging Designers component aims to support local up and coming designers on a national platform, all competing for the coverted ‘Emerging Designer of the Year’ title. Tickets on sale soon. Inspired by designer Stacey Hendrickson’s nostalgia for her high school days, the fun and floral-filled autumn collection is blossoming, stocked in high profile stores such as Urban Outfitters, Revolve Clothing and Nasty Gal. “This is our biggest collection yet, filled with lots of fun matching separates and flattering preppy dresses,”says Stacey. The Adelaide label has certainly come a long way since its inception in 2011 by the then 18-year-old selftaught designer. More than 90 emblematic haute couture garments, created by France’s leading fashion designers, will feature in a major exhibition from 25 October. Diddy loves her, and so do we. Tania Debono, better known as TheWriting, is creating storms wherever she goes.

With damn hard work and the help of social media, what started out as a humble creative outlet, is now making international imprints. Originally hailing from Adelaide, Tania moved to Sydney where she started The Writing. “I’ve always loved typography and the letterform so I started posting small Instagrams involving words and quotes that I felt close to when the city was kicking my ass,” says Tania. Tania writes whatever comes organcially, whether it's something she is feeling, has heard on the street, or even something that looks visually appealing. From this point, a simple concept was steamrolled by the power of social media. “Oh man I can’t even explain it, through my work as a digital strategist I understand the power of social media but I never knew how much of an amazing case study TheWriting would be” . But Tania is now trying to move TheWriting into a more tangible world, exhibiting with The Cool Hunter in Sydney earlier this year. Some of TheWriting’s biggest supporters have been US-based site The Covetuer, P Diddy and his team, The NYTimes and Harpers Bazaar NY, Phoebe Tonkin and Donna from Parks & Rec, if you don’t mind. When asked why she thinks TheWriting has become so popular, Tania says, “It’s real. So many things out there are created with the wrong intentions and people see through that.

‘FAST FIVE’ Embarrassing media moment: I received a call to bring looks for an international client’s show for a last minute media call at 9pm… I had to arrive there straight from a spray tan in my ‘tanning’ black pjs. – I was mortified. What to watch: Ted talks , they inspire me. Listen: I have Sia on repeat lately, I’m revisiting The Strokes and I always have a special place for Jay –Z always. Eat: Avocado on sourdough with lemon juice and goats curd – and most recently a variation of frozen yoghurts, my favourite NY haunt is 16 Handles. What city would you rather be in right now and why? I’m in New York and there is no other place I’d rather be in the world right now and forever.

TheWriting is just about sharing real emotions the people and myself feel, and so many people have connected with that.” Last year Tania took another leap of faith and started her own PR business, CAKE Service. “I wanted to pull apart the preconceived thoughts about what the industry is about- we are about creating brand experiences,” she says. For the year ahead, with such a dense US audience, Tania is planning a trip to New York for some fresh opportunities. “I just want to be there and find some new inspiration and perspective for both CAKE and TheWriting and there’s no better place to be than NYC for that. Change is always a good thing. “Future plans will be me never living in one place, it’s my dream to be slightly nomadic, meeting random people along the way and being inspired daily by new surroundings. I want TheWriting to be something that grows, and continues to be apart of people's lives for as long as it can, I’m excited to see what happens next with it.” However, Tania will always be our homegirl saying, “When I lived in Adelaide I took everything we had for granted - our amazing coastal beaches, on-street parking, the food, the coffee, the wine, you know, the important things and I guess all those things keep me coming back. STEP 4 When applying eye shadow, use one brush to pick up and apply colour, and the other to blend and soften while keeping both eyes open, guaranteeing a symmetrical application. Blend eye shadow over the eyelids and through the lower lashes to accentuate the lash line. Apply a shimmery eye shadow in the centre of the eyelid to intensify the look.

Great makeup begins with great skin. Use a foundation brush to help blend foundation into the skin. Start by applying on the outer corner of the face and blend towards the centre, this allows seamless blending and long lasting finish.

Set the foundation with a loose powder to achieve a silky, transparent finish. Use a face product in a neutral shade to highlight the inner corner of the eyes, brow bone and bow of lip for a subtle brightening effect.

Groom brows with a clear brow gel for a bit of sculpting and definition without any colour or tint.

With a well sharpened lip liner, define and contour the lip, fill in the entire lip and, with a lip brush, blend the colour through. This will keep the colour looking great for hours. Finish the lips with an application.

aya Kolega’s artwork is both fresh and nostalgic. Her creativity is inspired by her spirited childhood in Port Lincoln, and skill from her photographer Dad. While her roots derive a traditionally technical approach to illustration, her unique pieces reflect current popular culture subject matter. After successfully exhibiting across Adelaide as part of SALA, and in Sydney during Head On Photo Festival, she is now working on new material. We had a chat to Maya and it’s not hard to see why she is one to watch. What was your childhood like growing up in Port Lincoln? Adventurous, carefree, secure. How did you get into art and illustration? My dad used to be a photographer so his film photos always inspired me, but I have loved drawing for as long as I can remember. I would ever only use lead pencil for years until I grew an appreciation for all means of creation. Can you describe your technique? I love to experiment using a mixture of techniques but I will always have similar themes. For example, there is a consistent theme of portraiture throughout my works. My

artworks are often created using different combinations of ink, watercolour and acrylic paint mediums, which can be manipulated and used in different ways.

What is some technical advice for someone who wants give illustration a go? Everyone can be a ‘good’ artist, you just have to believe in what it is you create and sell it to the world.

What are your favourite products to work with? I love working with ink in both pen and water form. There is just so much you can do with ink.

What is it like being an artist in Adelaide? Eexciting! People are very open to young artists in Adelaide, not only venues for exhibitions but the whole community of Adelaide. Everyone is so accepting but also intrigued and excited to hear what a young artist is up to.

Female faces are a reoccurring subject matter – why? It actually is not intentional; however I do enjoy drawing the female face and figure. There are so many different images you can create with different hairstyles, clothing and makeup. Where did you learn your artistic skills? I believe my artistic skills were developed through a love and appreciation for all forms of art. I most significantly developed as an artist during my 3 years studying Visual Art at the University of South Australia.

RECENTLY ATTITUDE MAGAZINE SPENT A FEW DAYS IN SEMINYAK FOR WHAT WE THOUGHT WOULD BE A REJUVENATING, LAZY BREAK BEFORE HEADING BACK TO AN AUSTRALIAN WINTER. THE DISCOVERIES WERE QUITE UNEXPECTED.

ali has been quietly making a comeback, by building and rebuilding resorts, bars, clubs and, quite surprisingly, worldclass restaurants. While there’s still a stigma around the darker sides of Bali; the tacky tourism, the tacky tourists themselves, heckling and rubbish, if you step outside the box you will discover what Bali truly is. With over four million inhabitants, Bali, although small, is a thriving micro-nation with extraordinary diversity in religion,

Bali is home to a wide variety of worldclass cuisine. It is common for foreign restaurateurs to temporarily relocate to Bali, set up shop for a fifth of the cost than if it opened back home, in a much larger space, using supreme produce at a lower cost. This is the story of renowned Sydney restaurateur Robert Marchetti, who famously started Icebergs Dining Room and Bar in Bondi, who has now just opened Seminyak Italian Food, home of the best authentic Italian food we have ever had. It is the same narrative for Aussie Sean Prenter, who started Mexicano in Sydney and now runs Barbecoa Bali, which is famous for the wood oven BBQ and charcoal grill.

Where to eat. The eateries are as diverse as they are plentiful. Whether you have a shoe-string-budget or cash to blow, Warung (local restaurant) Sulawesi was had some of the best traditional food in Bali. We recommend the Ayam Pelalah (shredded chicken with chilli and lime). It is well worth. A visit to one of the many cheap-as-chips food markets, and if you can look past the shabby appearance, you’ll find some of the most delicious eats for under a dollar. Sardine, La Lucciola, MAMA San, Métis and Teatro are also favourites. Must try. A Balinese tradition, Baba Guling (sucking pig) melts like butter at Barbacoa in Seminyak.. Drink. Seminyak Italian Food, if not for its stunning interior alone, is also known for the unrivalled drinks menu. Try the ‘Bellini’. For something sweet, cheap and healthy try Air jeruk, which is bittersweet orange juice either served hot or with ice and you can buy the real deal at roadside food stalls. Highlight. If you want to take some of the food home with you, look into a cooking class at the Sofitel Hotel in Nusa Dua. With brand new, stateof-the-art facilities in one of the most opulent hotels in Bali, it is a bargain at only around $40 per person.

Both of these restaurants and many more, are breath-takingly regal with stunning fitouts designed by Australians, but built by the Balinese using local and imported materials. With the production cost significantly lower, the end results are magnificent, and if back home, only the better half could afford to dine in such opulence. Double Six Luxury Hotel was our HQ for the trip and was the perfect oasis. In the heart of Seminyak, it’s close enough to all the activity, including renowned Ku De Ta and Potato Head, while remaining private. The direct flight path from Adelaide to Denpasar takes just over five hours, and with flights often cheaper than going interstate, it is the perfect getaway destination this winter.

It offers the rustic comfort of a traditional pub but the food is nothing like you have experienced before. “We make nice food for nice people,” says Chef Phil Whitmarsh. WINES TO LOOK OUT FOR 2014 12th Man Adelaide Hills Chardonnay – Adelaide Hills has had a stunning year for white wines.“It was the dream season this year. All fruits are pristine, pure and delicate,” says Kelly. The Adelaide Hills fruit in this wine is handpicked, whole-bunch pressed and allowed a natural fermentation with indigenous yeast. It is a labour intensive wine that rewards drinkers with a creamy taste, lashings of lemon curd and nectarine. DECANTING DIY Decanting can be confusing if you don’t know what you’re doing, or why. It is one of those elements of wine service that can be intimidating. We caught up with East End Cellars owner, Michael Andrewartha, and found out it’s easy-peasy.

What is decanting? The purpose of decanting is that it removes all sediments and introduces oxygen into the wine. Why should you decant wine? As oxygen is introduced to the wine it produces more vibrant flavours and aromatics. How do you decant wine? Softly pour a bottle of wine into a decanter and run the stream of wine down the side of the glass, getting as much oxygen across the face of the wine as possible. With an old wine, don’t pour the last bit in because it is full of sediments, which are no good to

drink. Depending on the wine, some need 10 minutes of decanting and others a day. What wines benefit most from decanting? Highly tannic and full-bodied wines benefit mostly from decanting. These include mainly reds and some aged whites. These days, younger wines are fine straight out the bottle. There are specific decanters for champagne and sparkling wine too. You can serve straight from the decanter or pour it back into the bottle using a funnel.

PROBLEMS IS THE BRAINCHILD OF LOCAL MUSO JUSTIN WALKDEN. BETWEEN GUITAR DUTIES IN MESSRS, WALKDEN RELEASED THE DEBUT PROBLEMS EP FOR THE AGES WITH VOCALIST AND FELLOW MESSR SHANE LOCK EARLIER THIS YEAR. WITHOUT QUESTION IT IS ONE OF THE FINEST LOCAL RELEASES YOU’LL HEAR IN 2014, AND WE’RE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO THINK SO. FOR THE AGES HAS BEEN BIGGED UP BY TREND-SETTING BLOGS SUCH AS STONEY ROADS, INDIE SHUFFLE AND ACID STAG, MAKING PROBLEMS ONE OF THE MOST HYPED THINGS IN ADELAIDE.

A

t a time when electronic music in Australia sounds increasingly homogenised, Problems are breaking the mould, or at least stretching it out a bit. We caught up with Walkden to find out more about his bedroom project-cumfully functional band and where he plans to take it next. How long has Problems been in the works? Problems started around a year ago. I actually started it with a different guy on vocals but you know, life gets in the way. Shane was on the boat shortly after that. You and Shane are both in Messrs – what made you want to change tack and do something different? For me, Problems became an easy outlet to make music that was not tied to any specific sound and didn’t have anyone to answer to. It started as me making music and being creative. If I personally like something I’m working on, it sticks, compared to the band environment where you have five different opinions. I really think it was a progression from Messrs. We started recording our own stuff a few years ago and that’s where my interest in production and recording really came from. Getting old and its associated problems seems to be a main theme of For The Ages. Is that what you were going for?

I don’t really think that’s exactly what we were going for but it’s interesting you put it that way. The EP name came from me wanting to make something I would still be proud of in years to come; that would, you know, last ‘for the ages’. I didn’t want to follow trends in what I was making but make something that hopefully has longevity. On the other hand, everyone’s getting older, and there are problems associated with all of that. I had my quarter-life crisis years ago: I bought a sports car, quit my job and found Viagra. If I live til I’m 80 – which is a fair innings – I must have been 20 at quarter life. I’m now 28, so this must be a mid-life crisis EP. There are some pretty diverse sounds on the EP, from flamenco guitar to sitar. What were your main influences when writing it? When I started this project my influences where trying to make music that I thought was real. So instead of moving straight to the synthesiser I would hit the Rhodes piano. Through this I started toying with these ‘different’ instruments, trying to make them accessible. Electronic music in Australia seems to be in a bit of a stasis at the moment with everyone trying to emulate a certain style. Is that a fair assessment? Yeah I totally agree with that statement but there are still some electronic musicians doing great, inspired and original things. Seek and find. | 7 6 AT T I T U D E M A G A Z I N E |

Problems is garnering a lot of interest from blogs around the world but things are still pretty quiet here in Australia. What do you put this down to? There is probably an answer somewhere in the previous question. It’s not going all bad in Australia though. We have some things bubbling under the surface… Adelaide seems like a bit of a hot bed for electronic music, and music generally, at the moment. Who are you digging? Yeah I have been thinking about this a lot recently. There is so much great music coming out of Adelaide at the moment. A few years ago it seemed really tired and uninspired around here, but it’s definitely changed. I think Rip It Up got the Hot 6 pretty right this year. Other than that, in terms of Adelaide electronic music, Osloh, Collarbones, Oisima and Holy Models are doing great things. What’s next for you guys? Hmm the future… We have a new single dropping soon. We’ll keep touring and working on this next release, whether it be an album or EP 2.0, the ‘my life was a crisis’ EP. Waking Dreams and Wild Lands INFORM GLASS ANIMALS’ DEBUT ALBUM ZABA

I

t seems insomnia can prove to be quite fruitful, as UK band Glass Animals discovered. The Oxfordbased four-piece was kickstarted three years ago when frontman Dave Bayley found a creative outlet for his sleep troubles and began making music in the quiet of night. “Dave was studying to be a doctor in London and DJing on the side and he couldn’t sleep so he decided to start writing music on his computer,” says drummer Joe Seaward. Those early demos, a hybrid of the smooth and soulful sounds of Antony & The Johnsons and James Blake, inspired Bayley and his three closest friends to form a band. But Seaward says the idea was “a bit of a surprise”. “One of the reasons we became friends is we all listened to the same music and used to go and watch music together, but there was never any sort of pipe dream

that we would be the band on stage one day.” It seems the story of Glass Animals is full of surprises and happy accidents. The band signed to influential UK producer Paul Epworth’s label Wolf Tone after a chance meeting at a gig. “Our first proper show in London was after we released our first EP, and by mistake we saw [Paul’s] name on the guestlist before we went on stage, and Dave and I were completely shocked,” Seaward laughs. “He’d been partly responsible for us being friends in a way; lots of bands that we were listening to when we were young were produced by him, people like LCD | 7 8 AT T I T U D E M A G A Z I N E |

Soundsystem, Maximo Park, Futureheads, The Rakes, lots of those guitar bands. “We played the show and he took us for a drink afterwards. And then a couple weeks later we went out in London and he got talking about his record label and said, ‘I’d really like you guys to be my first signings to it’. We were kind of blown away.” With Bayley in the producer’s seat, Epworth acted as a “guiding hand” for the band. “I think it was probably quite interesting for him because for the first time in a while he wasn’t the main producer. He had a much more hands-off approach,” Seaward says.


make a record, or a body of work, where the whole was as important as the pieces in it,” Seaward says. “Some of our favourite records from when we were young, like Dark Side Of The Moon, you could press play at the beginning of the record and disappear into this weird world and then get spat out after 40 minutes. At that time Dave was also reading books and watching films about the New World and exploration and that kind of thing, so I think the combination of all those things meant that the record had a sort of jungle-y, unexplored vibe to it, transporting someone away from normality; going somewhere man hasn’t been before.” The wild nature of the record is typified in the band’s decision to preserve the raw energy of the recording process, favouring organic sounds over clean and flawless production. “It’s one of those things where if you keep polishing and taking away the imperfections you actually end up with something that’s quite cold. The blips and the mistakes and the random noises from the studio can actually give a record character sometimes. It was quite difficult to put an end to it and say, ‘Alright, no more’, but I think limiting yourself to a period of time like that is important.” GLASSANIMALS.EU

“He showed us where we could go, and then let us choose where we wanted to go. He’d leave us in the studio and then pop his head around the door and see what was going on.” The result is Glass Animals’ debut LP Zaba, named after William Steig’s children’s story The Zabajaba Jungle, a tale about a boy venturing off into a mysterious and wild land.

The record takes its cues from the themes and imagery present in the book, bridging nu-soul, R&B and ambient electronica with Afro beats and tribal rhythms to transport the listener to another time and place. “Before we started recording we went into the studio with the idea that we wanted to

O

n arrival at James Knight’s home, one would think we had the wrong address. The numberless plot had complete anonymity, the only hint of residency was the brass doorknocker in the shape of a deer. Behind the numberless door was an eclectic collection of furniture and art ranging from the modern to the sentimental, the minimal to the overgrown and the classic to the obscure. An artificial grass floor, taxidermy, an improvised masking tape rug, indoor plants, vintage medical paintings and post boxes used as tables show Knight’s unconventional style. Though James admits he is a sucker for trends. He sources his furniture from all over the world with pieces ranging from the renowned French interior designer Philippe Starck to Australian Architect Douglas Snelling. Sentimental gems like his grandma’s round wooden table and his father’s artwork keep his living space humble and personal. James ties the space together with a colour scheme, opting for hues of copper, black and white with textured wood. He says his choice of colours is loosely inspired by interior stylist Emma Fexeus and her blog Emma’s Design Blog. People often tell James his interior aesthetic is obscure and bizarre, but to this, James says some people are just boring!
