A story was told of a loving father who pampers his children a great deal. Every evening when he comes home from work, he will, without fail, have something in his hands he bought for the children, be it toys, their favourite ice cream or tidbits or other surprises. The moment the children hear the opening of the door, they will run to meet their father and their entire attention will be channeled to their father’s hands to see what he has got for them. There comes a day when the father is a little late home and is not able to buy anything. When he opens the door that day, the children, as usual, rush to him but when they look at his empty hands, all of them withdraw from him, ignoring him and go back to do their own things. This is not so much a story about the failure of a pampering father, but a reflection of the way many believers are treating the Heavenly Father in their prayer journey. They are seeking God’s hands so much that they do not seek His face. What matters to them is simply asking and getting things from the Father. When prayers are not answered, meeting God becomes an option. While it is not wrong to ask God for things and favour, but isn’t it sad when our sole objective in the Christian journey is just to ask for things, for favours, for “what God can do for me?” Many have downgraded their relationship with the Father as one that seeing Him as an ATM or Dispenser of goodness, grace and favours. In Matt 6:33 the Lord Jesus clearly distinguishes between 2 specifics that we can seek after: First, The Kingdom of God and His Righteousness, and second, “all these things”. He also allocate a value and priority to the one that He wishes all believers, or in fact, all man should seek after. There is a bigger preoccupation in prayer than just myopically focusing on freshly needs and desires. This pre-occupation is immersing in a communicating relationship with the God of heaven, worshipping Him and engaging in serving Him. Prayer is seeking God’s face, a desire to know His being, a longing to Continue on Pg 3...
