WORK AT HIGH ALTITUDE

A fleet of five new Hitachi EX3600-6 excavators has been supplied by the Hitachi construction machinery dealer for Kyrgyzstan, Turkuaz Machinery, to work at high altitude in sub-zero temperatures on the Kumtor gold mine. The ultralarge mining machines are being utilised as the primary excavators for the 24/7, 365-day operation that mines ice, moraine and rock to reach the gold veins. Each EX3600-6 has been fitted with a cold weather package, which includes an engine heater and various covers to prevent the heated air from escaping, and the freezing air from entering the machine’s systems. Gautam Infrastructure and Construction Equipment, a Mumbai, India-based construction company, uses its veteran Skyjack SJ9250 RT scissor lift for a variety of projects, including some highly original jobs. The company purchased the machine secondhand in 2006 from AJ Access Platform Equipment in Caldicot, UK,

although its date of manufacture stretches back into the 1990s. The age of the platform has prompted Gautam to enter it into Skyjack’s Quest2013, a contest to find its oldest working unit. The capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, will have by the end of 2014 a new road connection between the city centre and the Noi Bai International Airport. The pathway of this new 8-lane-road, four for each direction, crosses the Red River. To save its 1,200 meters of width, Vietnam’s Ministry of Transportation launched a project of a spectacular cablestayed bridge and approach viaduct of 3,080 meters in total length. The main part of the bridge, 1,500 metres in length, will feature five Ashaped concrete pylons, to which the clamping cables will be tied. A system has been developed to extract this heat and store it in underground aquifers during the summer period. During the winter the heat is used to warm buildings. So far, 13 projects have been completed with the system. Because of the extensive asphalt paved road network in Europe there is a huge potential of energy in the form of heat. The system has been derived from systems used in the floor heating business: pipes and fixation system had to be completely redesigned for application in asphalt pavements. PERI has provided yet another convincing performance with the construction of the Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport with the delivery of enormous amounts of materials at short notice as well as competent engineering for the related formwork and scaffolding planning. The airport is one of the world’s fastest growing aviation hubs. The new X-shaped airport terminal is being built between the north and south runways. At the four piers of the so-called Midfield Terminal Building (MTB), 65 large aircrafts up to the size of an Airbus A380 can be accommodated. From 2017 onwards, up to 30 million passengers will be handled annually, supported by the world’s largest baggage handling system. Centrepiece of the terminal is the over 50 m high terminal building, the so-called Central Processor. The seven-storey structure features an area totalling 700,000 m². Krone Group sales increased by 7% during the 2012/2013 financial year to nearly €1.5 billion. Good for €925 million in 2012/2013, and a 5% increase over the previous year, the commercial trailers division remains the main sales generator, and during the past financial year the company made 35,000 trailer units. Dubbed ‘Precision Combi Seeding’ (PCS), the setup allows operators to switch between normal cereal drilling and more accurate sowing of row-crops such as maize. Individual seed singulation units (between four and 10 depending on machine width and row spacing) on the underside of the hopper separate seeds mechanically using cups on a hydraulically driven disc. These then travel down dedicated delivery pipes to the normal disc coulters where sensors monitor seed spacing as they are dropped into
