THREE NEW MID-HEIGHT MODELS Mid-height construction range totally renewed. Manitou group presented at Bauma three new models: MT 835, MT 1135 and MT 1335. The range is simplified to make it clearer and the three models have identical design (chassis, boom, engine, transmission, hydraulics,…). All in compliance with the new European standards. In accordance with its engine-manufacturer strategy that combines engine performance and use, Manitou has chosen a Perkins engine type IIIB / Interim Tier 4 stage for the three models due to a requirement for compact design and performance in the mid-height telescopic trucks segment (enhanced power with higher-performance engine torque: 420 Nm at 1,400 rpm). The machines adapt themselves to all ground configurations, up to 10° of correction (anti-leaning device, as standard for the MT 1135 and the MT 1335).

THE LATEST DESIGN DEVELOPMENT The Potain MDT 248 is the largest from the city range of the company’s topless tower cranes and will be erected on a 60 m mast. The MDT 248, which was on the Manitowoc booth at Bauma, offers two options for rigging its top section. The cabin, tower heads and hoist can be lifted as a single element by a larger mobile crane for less assembly in the air and faster erection. For owners using a lower-capacity mobile crane, the cabin and tower head can be lifted as a single component (a 1.6 m section weighing 7,880 kg) and the hoist winch can be lifted separately. Centering pins make it easy for riggers to connect sections while assembling the jib on the ground. Riggers will also appreciate the step bar on each section when rigging the jib in the air. The counterjib on the MDT 248 can fold for transport. The crane’s upper works, including the counterjib, a 65 m jib and the 50 LVF hoist winch, travels on four trucks. The Potain MDT 248 is available with a 10 t or 12 t maximum capacity with a 37 kW or 56 kW winch. Both versions have a maximum jib of 65 m and feature the Ultra View cab. The crane can be used with 1.6 m or 2 m wide mast sections. EC 068

TAILOR-MADE SYSTEM Produced and marketed a few years ago by Indeco North America and Indeco Australia, the Indeco IBS pedestal boom secondary breaking system looks destined to make a strong impact on many other markets, having already proven to save time and money in many quarry and mine. Mounted over the mouth of a primary crusher, it is used to reduce bridged and oversized material which slows down crushing operations: by doing so, plant down times can be safely eliminated. The experience which Indeco has built up on the Australian and pan-American markets has enabled the company to develop a range of pedestal mounted breaker systems with outstanding reliability, ruggedness, productivity and profitability.
Indeco pedestal boom systems are tailormade, designed according to the individual requirements and specifications set out by the customer.

ANOTHER RECORD
MULTIPLYING THE POWER
After being one of the pioneers in the industry and having mounted one of the first 24 meters double articulated platforms on 3.5T truck, Socage tried again to beat any record with the 28 meters. To celebrate the new project, Socage has created a new name that will be introduced for the future models: Forste 28D. The name comes from the new range restyling inspired by the charity Association for Children “Forste”; the number indicates the working height and the letter stands for the type of boom, which in this case is 28 meters double articulated. The previous 28 meters model, DA328, is mounted on 5,6 ton truck that is able to reach 28 meters height, 16 meters working outreach with 225 Kg SWL. From the combination between the experience and a new software, Socage has created the Forste 28D, the first 28 m double articulated platform mounted on 3,5T Chassis which allows anybody with a driving license to hire it: the SWL is 300 kg, the maximum outreach is 14 m and it has electro-hydraulic controls. This platform is ideal for the city centre since it is extremely compact (6,690 mm travelling length and 2,100 mm width with front and rear H frame outriggers) and allows the operator to optimize the stabilization area.
Premium Line is a new range of demolition equipment developed by Trevi Benne, with the power multiplier device Impact Booster. It’s the result of months invested in research and development, bench test, hundreds of hours of testing on site. Impact Booster is an integrated hydraulic device that allows you to multiply the power (i.e. the hydraulic pressure provided by the excavator). Demolishing the material, if the pressure of the excavator is no longer enough to crack the material, automatically the Impact Booster comes into play boosting the pressure of the operating machine (pre-set at 250 bar) up to a cylinder peak pressure of 750 bar. Premium Line includes the primary crusher HC 23P and the multi kit pulverizer MK 23P.

FOR PRACTICAL CONDITIONS “With a working height of 90 m, even with a basket load of 700 kg, we have no competitors that we can look up to”, says Stephan Kulawik, Managing Director of Palfinger Platforms, who is pleased about the new truck access platform P900Top Class. However, the lateral range of 32.3 m with a basket load of 530 kg (or with a heavy basket load of 700 kg as an option) is an absolute peak value. Up to 22.5 m, it is possible to telescope below the set-up coordinate 0. The basis for these peak values is formed by a Scania 5-axle truck. The total weight is given as well below 48 t. This facilitates an incredibly high loading weight potential. Nevertheless, the heavyweight has been optimised for practical conditions and can be securely stabilised in areas where there is very little space (stabiliser distance L 7,255, W 7,200). Thanks to a 5th axle, which acts as a lift axle and is automatically lifted during stabilisation, the P900Top Class requires a much smaller jack lift on the incline. To facilitate global use and the resulting differences in licensing in different countries, a foldable underride guard is integrated into the vehicle body. EC 093

HIGHER PRODUCTIVITY 8 www.abcmagazine.eu
Simex used Bauma 2013 as a platform to introduce their new screening bucket, the VSE 40, an ideal complement to the range of CBE crusher buckets. Thanks to the innovative solutions studied and patented by Simex, the VSE 40 can adjust the distance of the drums hydraulically, allowing the operator to constantly vary the output size, with bucket empty, from 0-15 to 0-45 without interrupting screening operations. To further improve productivity, the attachment is fitted with rhomboidal-shaped elements, which by rotating at different tangential velocities, create a movement of material that enables larger volumes to be screened, with the end result of having a higher productivity. The new VSE 40 is shaped as a normal bucket, so loading operations are made easier since the screening bucket does not require the operator to perform boom movements or work cycles any different from those carried out normally.

ALTERNATIVE DRIVE For the first time ever, Wacker Neuson presented an alternative drive for compact machines at Bauma: the smallest excavator 803 with dual power. As an alternative to the diesel engine, an external electro-hydraulic drive can be connected to the excavator via “Plug & Play”. The full power of the 803 is not only maintained with the emission-free operation, but the 803 is the first excavator in this weight class that can also be used without restrictions for demanding demolition work in an ambient temperature of up to 45°C thanks to the cooling capacity of the unit. The hydraulic power unit (HPU) can also be used with other excavator models by Wacker Neuson. The charge weight, the stability and dimensions do not change due to the dual power option. –

DUST SUPPRESSION
ITALIAN GRAIN SILO
Fog Maker is the new product launched into the market by Idrotech, the brand of Idrobase Group specialized in the manufacturing of fogging systems. This new equipment is mainly used to reduce dust; it uses an industrial (nebulising) atomizing system that shoots billions of small droplets into the air up to 60 metres with a rotation field of 340° through misting nozzles, situated in a ring on the exit of a powerful fan. Fog Maker is available in the market in different versions: “Elefante” and “Giraffa”. The first one, characterised by a short column, is more powerful, while the second one is more versatile and equipped with a hydraulic column, that makes it similar to a giraffe stretching out its pantographlike neck which can lift the fan up to a height of 5,2 metres. Both models come complete with a fogging module, inlet water filter, and a control panel. –

350,000 SCR ENGINES
FPT Industrial, a pioneer in the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction for Diesel engines, has reached a major milestone, with 350,000 SCR units now installed on FPT engines. To address the Euro IV and Euro V emission regulations introduced in 2005, requiring a severe decrease in Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) output, FPT Industrial chose Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) as its only after treatment system. The concept was also implemented for the corresponding Stage III B/IV and Tier 4A/4B off-road requirements. Developed at FPT Industrial’s R&D facility in Arbon, Switzerland, in 1991, the FPT SCR technology provides solutions offering lower fuel consumption and higher specific power output for an array of applications, including on-road, construction and agricultural vehicles, as well as power generation. Through the system, NOx compounds formed during the combustion process are reduced within the exhaust by the additive AdBlue, which converts it to molecular Nitrogen N2 and water vapour. Spanning the NEF and Cursor families, engines with SCR are available to power a variety of machinery, with four and, six -cylinder units ranging in capacity from 3.9 to 12.9-litres and output from 75 to 497 kW. Taking SCR to the next level, FPT Industrial has developed High Efficiency SCR (HIeSCR) for Euro VI and Tier 4 Final emission regulations in 2014.

Simple, compact, and flexible: these are the main characteristics of the new single-wheel drive solution for compact vehicles that Bosch Rexroth presented at Bauma 2013. The innovative high-efficiency traction control (HET) enables a fully automatic switch from two-wheel to all-wheel drive. The HET makes it possible for compact vehicles such as municipal vehicles, loaders or mini-dumpers to operate efficiently with two-wheel drive on normal roads, and provides optimal all-wheel drive characteristics for difficult terrain. It was designed with a particular focus on driver comfort. This has been achieved with the fully automatic all-wheel drive actuation feature that kicks in immediately when needed. HET has a very compact design and is easy to install without any electronics. This makes it an attractive plug-and-play solution for vehicle manufacturers. With conventional series circuits, oil flows through the radial hydraulic motors successively. This means that pressure drops in an even manner, and that torque distribution to the vehicle's wheels is about 50:50. If the main drive axle's torque is reduced as a result of slippage, the HET unit balances distribution by automatically actuating the front wheels' motors. EGR HELPS SCR 24 Italian building and construction 24 www.abcmagazine.eu
For 2014, Volvo Penta will meet the much more Tier 4 Final standards using the same well-tested technology. A further development of the Scr catalyst has improved the NOx conversion to levels unheard of just a few years ago. Adding a “light” Egr provides further emission reduction and will at the same time help keep the Scr catalyst operating at an optimal temperature. The innovative Egr system on the engines is lightly cooled or not cooled at all. This serves two purposes: first of all, it will not add extra cooling requirements. Secondly, it will not be subject to exhaust gas condensation and thus the potential corrosion that can lead to downtime. By avoiding a costly Doc,
installation is greatly simplified. “This is probably the best Egr system in the world,” says David Hanngren, Manager Product Planning Industrial at Volvo Penta, and adds, “With our new Tier 4 final engine range, we will also meet our customers’ primary objectives: no re-generation, limited installation challenges, and optimized fuel consumption.”

HYBRID AT THE TOP Oerlikon Graziano’ last innovative technology on show at VDI is the so called OG-Eco, an hybrid transmission with torque infill, to deliver better vehicle performance and improved emissions. The technology combines the seamless shifting benefits of a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) with the packaging and weight advantages of an AMT. The gearbox can be combined with a hybrid system that is fully integrated into the transmission package. The electric motor projected by Oerlikon Graziano is linked to the main transmission through a two speed gear set, providing torque to the drivetrain in between gear selection enabling constant torque delivery. The technology combines two benefits: engine working in a more efficient condition and smoother gearshift compared to a traditional AMT. It also allows vehicle manufacturers to further benefit from theirinvestment in hybrid technologies, by optimising the efficiency and overall system weight. –

TOWERS FOR HIGH SPEED RAIL Pilosio is hard at work on lot 782 of the Swiss construction site of AlpTransit San Gottardo SA, the supervising company, where the construction is planned of a viaduct for the high-speed rail link. The structure spans a total distance of 442 metres in the Bellinzona-Lugano direction of the new trans-Alpine railway, due for completion by the end of 2014. An important requirement of the client, represented by the MPC consortium, which assigned the works and is made up of the firms CSC SA-Muttoni SA-Pizzarotti SA, was the use of support structures in order to construct the viaduct. Initially, the building firm decided on the construction of a total of 18 concrete pillars for each of the viaduct’s five sectors. The pillars were only to be used to support the construction of the upper structure and would then have to be demolished once the building work had been finished. However, the decision to use Pilosio’s MP high-capacity towers meant, above all, that a lot of time could be saved instead of waiting for the concrete of the support pillars to fully set, as well as enabling greater continuity between the striking of the formwork of one sector and the assembly of the support structure for the following sector. Pilosio supplied a set of 18 high-capacity towers coupled in pairs by means of horizontal stiffeners. The towers were used in the first sector and then simply moved to construct the following sectors. The stiffening systems between pairs of towers enables them to be moved in masse from sector to sector. –

NETWORKING IN COMPACTION
With BCM net, Bomag has reached another milestone in surface covering compaction control (SCCC) and documentation. BCM net links all rollers in the compaction process on an earthworks or asphalt site. The measuring data and position of the rollers is made available to the connected participants in real time. The Bomag BCM 05 screen provides every roller operator with information about his own compaction work and that of every other operator involved in the process The site's overall compaction status is continuously presented and documented as compaction and EVIP passes, or on asphalt sites as a temperature map. BCM net is an advantage on any site where several rollers are jointly responsible for compaction. This is the case on many asphalt sites and large earthworks for dams, airports and highways. Data exchange allows cooperation between roller operators and the compaction quality increases productivity. A combination of static and dynamic compaction is also documented. Every roller operator has the compaction progress and process of all rollers in view. BCM net delivers an extensive overview of compaction quality. Advantages of BCM net: creates a transparent compaction process, and improves and ensures compaction quality; assists each roller operator individually and group-wise; optimizes use of the machine and the construction process; documents the complete compaction process and compaction quality. The BCM net comprises a server, a WLAN module for each roller and BCM net software. The requirement is to equip each participating roller with a BCM05 and the BOMAG Starfire GPS system. Rollers must be equipped with temperature sensors.

MARTINA TBM “U-TURN” The big journey of the TBM Martina is closed to destination. The Tunnel Boring Machine - engaged in the construction of Sparvo Tunnel on new A1 Motorway in Italy - last october was the “star” of an innovative process of 180° rotation using air cushion (hovercraft) technology. The unprecedented 180° rotation of the TBM (weighing almost 3000 tons), using hovercrafts, was developed by Toto Group's Engineering Department, in collaboration with specialist company Palmieri. No crane in the world would had been able to move a mass like Martina, all at once and so fast. To complete the complex U-turn, Toto Costruzioni Generali engineers first had made a reinforced concrete deck, of approximately 2400 m2, levelled to accomodate a margin of tolerance of not more than 1 mm per metre. A special metallic laminate was then positioned on top to allow the giant TBM to be moved safely, resting on a special support that was designed and built especially for this operation. A system of 80 compressed air cushions, positioned in the base of a special cradle had allowed the colossal structure to be literally lifted and slid along onto the built surface. The complex compression system created a thin layer of air in order to eliminate friction. Two dumper trucks and other drift control vehicles then directed the TBM towards the new launch chamber where the TBM, rotated by 180°, was assembled once more to proceed with its next excavation: the second tunnel tube.

EUROPE AND ROAD SAFETY
On 6th May, the European Road Safety Day conference was organised in Brussels on the theme “Pedestrian safety: vulnerable road users in urban areas” within the framework of United Nations Global Road Safety Week. Of the 30,000 people that lose their lives on European roads every year - European Union Road Federation (ERF) says - 21% are pedestrians, 7% cyclists, 18% riders of motorcycles and mopeds. Moreover, 70% of pedestrian fatalities are reported within urban areas. Despite the fact that the total number of road deaths has decreased significantly during the past 10 years, the number of pedestrian fatalities as percentage of total fatalities has actually increased. Approximately 170 safety experts attended the conference. Opening the event, the European Commission’s Vice-President Mr Siim Kallas, responsible for mobility and transport, emphasised that even though EU is the world’s leading region in road safety, there is yet room for further improvement in order to further decrease fatalities and serious injuries. Afterwards, Ms Isabel Durant, Vice-President of European Parliament, stated that more attention should be paid to the vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. In her words, it is of utmost importance for pedestrians and cyclists to obtain the same rights and respect those other road users have had for a long time. Following the introductory speeches, three panel discussions were organised on the following topics: pedestrian safety in cities: risks, causes and accident effects; how to improve urban safety for vulnerable road users: sustainable urban mobility planning, pedestrian safety; manuals and other best practices; next phase of developments for vulnerable road user safety: what new in technology, testing and transport.

ITS is expanding into the next stage of mobility and society. Starting with safety and traffic management as basic concerns, ITS is reaching out to three new domains: energy management, personalized mobility services navigated by big data, and resilient transport systems. The first two stem from the emergence of electrified vehicles and continuously advancing ICT technologies, and the third concept of resilient transport has become very important since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. At the same time, mobility in mega cities/regions is a major issue to be addressed in emerging economies, especially in Asia. Open has been adopted as the key word for expanding the potential of ITS: open platforms for basic concerns, and open connectivity, opportunities and collaboration for the three new domains. All of this will be discussed during the next ITS World Congress, October 14-18, 2013, in Tokyo, Japan. The Congress topics at a glance: Safety and traffic management; Next generation mobility and sustainability; Efficient transport systems in mega cities/regions; Intermodal and multimodal systems for people and goods; Personalized mobility services; Resilient transport systems for emergency situations; Institutional issues and international harmonization.
INJECTION SYSTEM Meyco MP 325 is an “one component” injection system, based on a nanometric colloidal silica suspension. The open time can be adjusted with an accelerator. The product may be used between +5°C and +40°C and contains neither solvents nor toxic components. The gel time may be adjusted by varying the quantity of accelerator for Meyco MP 325 added to component A. Due to the hydrophilic nature of the product, the adhesion is also good to wet surfaces. There is no foam reaction that can negatively influence the bond. MP 325 has been developed for consolidation of sand and silt based strata and for injection into fine joints and fissures in rock. These properties are particularly well suited for the following: slope stabilisation in rock; as a component of ground improvement techniques; pre-injection grouting for tunnelling projects; waterproofing of existing tunnels.

A key point of the discussions was how individual toll road infrastructure operators in practice manage their motorways and provide a safe, efficient and green mobility making proper use of intelligent technologies. “The common denominator for our contribution to sustainable development today and tomorrow is tolling”, stated Schierhackl, specifying that the revenue generated by the collection of tolls from the user is a prerequisite for the efficient management of the network, ensuring high levels of safety, service and maintenance, with due consideration of the environment. This point is also highlighted in a joint tolling declaration that was signed during the conference by Asecap and the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA).

FUME EXTRACTION SYSTEM Volvo CE revolutionary extractor for bituminous fumes was one of three finalists in the machinery component category of the Bauma Innovation Awards. The system, which is available as an option on Volvo CE’s C-Series ABG pavers, introduces a new way of removing fumes from the operator’s working environment. The innovative feature improves the working conditions of the operator - who sits directly above the auger channel. By delivering 83% efficiency, the system exceeds the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) guidelines which state that 80% of fumes should be captured. Volvo’s results have been independently certified by an environmental institute. The pioneering system works by using a fume intake, with a fan located directly behind it, on both the left and right hand side of the auger channel. The fan captures and transports the fumes via two tubes to the top of the paver where they are then released. This means that the air in the operator’s working environment is significantly cleaner than was previously the case. Volvo CE’s design is located at the back of the machine and features a very short distance between the intake and the fan - eliminating the need for additional piping and funnelling in the auger channel. This increases efficiency, prevents any loss of power and ensures that there is no effect on the operator’s visibility into the auger channel. Because extra power is not needed, smaller fans are used. These can be installed horizontally instead of vertically which offers a smaller, more compact architecture. This also helps to maintain visibility into the auger channel which is vital to ensure consistent material flow and good quality, smooth paving.

RICH TECHNOLOGY FOR RICE Accurate seed placement when drilling rice is one of the main targets for every rice grower. Guaranteeing a consistent placement and an uniform seeding depth is the aim of the Gigante cereal air drill by Maschio. The Gigante seeding unit design, with single notched disc openers, cuts every soil including hard no-till surfaces; the side gauge wheel sets the seeding depth and allows adjustment of it considering seed and soil types. The seed trench created by the coulter is extremely narrow and easy to close with the rear tapered cast wheel, seed to soil contact is perfect all the time and the furrow closing action can be adjusted setting by the down pressure of the rear closing wheel. Each unit is mounted on a Heavy Duty tool-bar made of high tensile steel, linked by a cast hinge and tempered pin where the opener arm is mounted on the bar. EC 429

CLEANER...AND CLEANER JCB has updated the Farm Master 434S to meet Stage IIIB/Tier 4i to create the 435S. As well as a 6.7 litre Cummins with Dpf and external Egr it has added TorqueLock to the six-speed ZF transmission. This is said to improve fuel efficiency and performance. Tests between the old and new models show a 34% productivity gain when it comes to pushing and climbing a silage clamp and 28% improvement in fuel use on the same task. Other fuel saving features include an eco mode which drops the max revs from 2.300 rpm to 1.800 rpm also when idling for more than 30 seconds the engine will automatically drop its speed from 950 rpm to 700 rpm. Top speed is 48 km/h and Smoothride can now be automatically engaged at any speed. A refreshed cab gets an Lcd display and lower 70dB(A) noise level. We have to consider also that JCB has lounched its new Dieselmax Tier 4 final engine and will start its commercialization and installation in its own machines from 2014. –

A LEADER IN OUTPUT AND DENSITY Case IH is replacing the variable chamber RB454 and 464 with the 455 and 465 which are said to have greater output and increased bale density. Pick-up widths are now measured tine-to-tine and are 1.8 or 2.0 m with a choice of four or five bars. The latter also gets rubber block mounting for the tines for added protection. Positioned above the side augers are two slightly larger augers which are said to even out the crop flow even more. There is also a choice of standard or rotor feed and rotor cut. Another Case IH improvement is a drop floor to allow lumps into the chamber rather than using a reversing system. There are now more tyre options with the largest being a 500/55-20. The chamber is now made with four wider belts rather than six with product specialist Paul Freeman adding that this gives increased contact area with the bale. An increase in bale density has been achieved by having the option of a second flow valve on the tailgate hydraulic so there is one on either side so the system operates under greater tension.

SPEED FOR THE SEED 37 www.abcmagazine.eu
Väderstad reports the success of its new Tempo precision drill working in many countries. Clearly a major development from the company, the Väderstad drill has been designed to allow operating speeds of up to, and possibly beyond, 18 km/h without any significant loss of accuracy, which is more than double the speed of more conventional precision drills. One of a few drills on the market which uses air pressure rather than suction to single seeds for individual sowing, the Tempo’s seed metering system comprises a seed disc having a series of holes on its circumference into which the seeds are blown. As the disc rotates the seeds reach an exit point where a knock-out wheel pushes each of them out for a rapid, powered trip down a 60 cm seed pipe to the ground. Exit speed is put at 15 m/sec and seed rate can be as high as 28 seeds/sec. EC 481

PERFORMANCE IN FORAGER Fendt has pushed on the Italian forager market with the Katana 65, which uses a Merc MTU V8 kicking out a maximum power of 653 hp. On the Fendt machine there are some clever features such as the kernel cracker, a V disc unit installed in only 10-15 minutes. The corn cracker itself can be retracted out of work for grass silage at the press of a button. Chopping is carried out by a 800 mm wide, 720 mm diameter drum with 28 knives. Chop length can range from 3.8-20.7 mm or with a half set of knives up to 42 mm. For demanding crops the 15.93 litre engine works at 2.000 rpm for maximum power but in lighter crops this can be eased back to 1.600 rpm which gives a slight reduction in power but also saves fuel. The engine has been mounted inline so it sits lower in the chassis making service work easier. The rear bonnet is lifted up for filling the AdBlue tank. –
