EXPERTS IN RECYCLING A new model for recycling sector. During Ecomondo Cams launched the mobile crushing and recycling plant UTM 60.15. The crushing machine mouth, of considerable dimensions, can accept sizes of particularly elongated forms, such as beams, curbs, pillars, etc., normally present in rubble. The UTM operation is entirely managed by an electronic central unit. As a matter of fact, under the supervision of a PLC, the machine can automatically invert the direction of rotation of the motors (mastication effect) in order to remove any particularly tough matters from the crushing chamber. A crushing and recycling plant can imply two kinds of environmental pollution: the acoustic pollution and the pollution due to dust emission. The low speed of rotation of the UTM shafts avoids both pollutions. –

HIGH PROTECTION Safe and yet economical renovation of a memorial. During renovation works at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin, the Layher Protect System installed by Gerüstbau Tisch not only protects pedestrians efficiently against falling objects, but thanks to effective weather protection also ensures a smooth process of the restoration and at the same time provides an attractive appearance of the inner-city construction site. The modular and easy to install Protect System consists of cassette elements with an aluminium frame and a galvanised steel sheet or - alternatively - a translucent plastic sheet. A circumferential rubber seal ensures a clean and precise fit connection to the adjacent elements. Its dust-proof design makes it the first choice for asbestos removal, façade cladding and sandblasting. Thanks to good noise-insulation qualities, the system is furthermore ideally suited for temporary noise barriers, such as construction sites in urban areas or big events. So the Protect System lives up to the high requirements for modern environmental, noise, weather and pedestrian protection, in a visually attractive way. EC 019

When it won the contract for construction site 113a on the B6N highway, the German Beton & Recycling was faced with a lucrative yet demanding job. They had approximately 50 days to raise an embankment in readiness for the construction of a steel arched bridge over the future Halle-Leipzig railway on the outskirts of Köthen. Beton & Recycling was immediately faced with depositing some 200,000 tons of material on each side of the bridge. The company opted for three latest-generation Case machines to fill key positions within the production chain. Site manager Torsten Hankel ordered one of the very first CX350C machines to be used in Germany for the extraction operations in the sand pit. The incoming material was spread and mounted by a new LGP (large grouser pads) 1650L bulldozer, the first Case dozer of this type to be used in Germany. The third new machine was a new type 1021F wheel loader, which had no trouble coping with the volumes of the material flows, thanks to its 4.4 m3 shovel.

SARENS BREMERHAVEN TANDEM LIFT Two Terex CC 6800 crawler cranes have been the subject of a lift in tandem in the port of Bremerhaven. On behalf of Lloyd-Werft Bremerhaven AG, the Sarens Group recently lifted two sets of four gigantic jackup legs onto two offshore installation vessels belonging to RWE OLG GmbH, a logistics company that is part of RWE Innogy, at the free port of Bremerhaven. These legs enable installation vessels to lift themselves up from the water in the middle of the sea while installing wind turbines. The Sarens team relied on two Terex CC 6800 Crawler Cranes to lift the 630-tonne, 78 meter-long steel colossi with the assistance of a floating crane. –

NEW LINE OF ENGINES
The Lombardini factory has been named a centre of excellence in the Kohler Group. The production facility at Reggio Emilia will produce the new, innovative KDI engine that was developed to meet the Final Tier 4 - Stage IIIB regulations set to take effect on January 1, 2013. Fully optimized to meet market demands, the new line of KDI was developed by Lombardini Group using the most advanced technology currently available. Clean combustion achieved with a high-pressure (200 Mpa) common rail system of the latest generation, combined with an electronically triggered Egr valve that makes circulate the right amount of exhaust gases, enables emission levels to comply with the new regulations while providing exceptional performance - and all without the use of after-treatment systems. The added value of KDI and the technology employed to create it result in "best comfort" for the user and better performance, sturdiness, low levels of vibration and noise emissions, and low operating and maintenance costs. The three models with direct injection, each with a different displacement (1.9L – 2.5L – 3.4L), are available in two different configurations: Mechanical injection (Tier 3/Stage IIIA) and Common Rail injection (Tier 4/Stage IIIB).

For example, Bosal-Sekura was chosen to develop and produce new safety cabs for the two Atlas Copco surface drill rigs 19 t and 30 t. The result was an effective modular cab for both machines. The initial challenge in the design brief was to construct a more spacious cab within the space available on the machine. The final design however, has been able to maximise every last bit of space available on the machine and even goes so far as to 'steal' previously unthought-of space by expanding over the top of the hydraulic tanks immediately behind the cab. This is giving a more solid and dynamic appearance while offering greater storage space inside.

BRAKES PERFORMANCE
Multi-Wing introduce another fan blade for Tier4/Stage IIIB application usage. The company has designed a new high performing fan blade to handle the high heat rejection requirements and ambient temperature. As cooling demands increase cooling packages become larger leaving less space for the fan in the engine compartment. The Multi-Wing fan blade 2Z2 is what we call a nearly zero blade deflection profile. Its narrow axial depth makes it a perfect fit for tight Tier 4 engine compartments while still producing the required high pressure rates. The new fan has an available diameter range of 450 to 805 millimetres and is moulded in glass-reinforced polyamide. The 2Z2 provides high cooling capabilities in small engine compartments.

With its new and unique pneumatic disc brake “PGS 15”, Knott is setting standards in terms of compact design. This is an extremely interesting new development, and not just for manufacturers of small construction machinery trailers: The PGS15 combines all the advantages inherent with disc brakes, from high braking output through temperature stability to operating economy, whilst also offering the option of an integrated parking brake function. Because of the brake’s excellent accessibility, the lining and disks can be exchanged in record time. EC 204

COMPACT DESIGN AND ENERGY-EFFICIENT The MPR 50 medium-pressure axial-piston pump from Linde Hydraulics represents a new drive concept for the working functions of mobile machines equipped with an electronically-controlled propel drive. When compared directly with internalgear pumps and load-sensing pumps with pressure cut-off, it is clear that this type of pump offers significant advantages. It is more compact, it can be easily integrated into the existing propel drive control and it helps to save energy. When compared with other drive systems for working hydraulics (i.e gear-pump con-

figurations and load-sensing pumps with pressure cut-off), the new medium-pressure pump offers a significantly more compact design. For example, when used in a wheel loader, an MPR 50 is approximately 70 mm shorter than a standard gear pump configuration. In addition, by using the MPR 50 you can reduce the energy consumption of the working machine. Integrating the pump into the electronic vehicle management system is a straightforward process. The swash angle is proportional to the input current. The control device with position feedback control corresponds to the equivalent mode used on Linde HPV02 pumps and ensures that the flow is adjusted to the currently required precise value. The electronic control system enables engine map optimisation of the diesel engine, thereby ensuring that it is always operated in the optimum range. As the MPR 50 can be directly controlled, the same volume flow - and therefore the same actuator speed - can be generated at a lower diesel engine speed. 23

In view of the recent decision of the European Commission to reinterpret the nature of Directive 96/53 concerning the cross-border movement of longer and heavier trucks, the ERF (European Road Federation) would like to raise awareness of the important implications such a move may have for road barriers. “Road safety barriers are designed and tested according to the maximum weight of vehicles circulating on Europe’s roads. The current European Norm (EN 1317) allows for the testing of barriers considering the impact of vehicles up to a maximum of 38 tonnes. We are concerned that, should heavier vehicles be allowed to circulate more widely on Europe’s roads, this may have serious implications on the ability of road barriers to protect drivers from their own human mistakes”, explained Christophe Nicodème, Director General of the ERF. “We do not have an ideological opposition to heavier vehicles”, explained Konstandinos Diamandouros, Head of Office at ERF and responsible for the area of road restraint systems. “We simply believe that the introduction of heavier vehicles on selected routes should be accompanied by the necessary adaptations to the road infrastructure and this of course includes safety barriers”.

ROAD DIAPHRAGM Pluvitec presented at Asphaltica (Padua, last November) the road diaphragm Grid Bit, a real form of reinforcement that distributes weight and thereby increases fatigue resistance while greatly reducing stress. The Grid Bit road diaphragm can extend the life-span of roads that have to withstand a high volume of heavy-duty traffic. “In many cases - Pluvitec says - it rapresents much more cost-effective alternative to the complete overhaul of deteriorated roads”. The Grid Bit, laid either above or beneath the connecting layer depending on the degree of deterioration, acts as barrier that prevents cracks from extending to upper layers. The particular structure og the Grid Bit also guarantees the complete waterproofing of unconnected layers as well as of the foundation and bed, preventing the riskk of pumping and rising of fine materials.

MANIFESTO ON ITS
The Chair of IRF’s specialist Policy Committee, Josef Czako, further highlighted that “intelligent and smart applications help to ensure sustainable mobility, which notably implies the safe and efficient transport of people and goods with due respect for social and environmental imperatives”. In support of this vision, the Federation launched the IRF Vienna Manifesto on ITS - Smart Transport Policies for Sustainable Mobility. The Manifesto advocates six key policy recommendations for political leaders and marks IRF’s long-term, on-going commitment to ITS deployment and the creation of conducive policy environments for the adoption of smart technology.

While sustainable mobility is recognised as one of the keys to social and economic development, our roads are becoming increasingly congested, road transport has negative environmental impacts and more and more cars need to be accommodated. According to the IRF, a pivotal response to this dilemma lies in the increased deployment of ITS. These have the demonstrated ability to improve the efficiency, safety and quality of mobility. Speaking at a Ministerial Round Table convened in Vienna on 22 October, ahead of the 19th ITS World Congress, the Chair of IRF Geneva, Kiran K. Kapila urged political leaders to “recognise the role of technology in improving the efficiency, safety and quality of mobility and to reflect this accordingly in the design and implementation of road development programmes”.

WARM MIX ASPHALT
Evotherm warm mix asphalt technology - developed by MWV - can be used in any traditional hot-mix asphalt (HMA) application-from the binder course to the surface course. Of all the warm-mix asphalt alternatives, Evotherm’s technology allows asphalt application at a temperature that is 100 to 130°F (50 to 75°C) lower than HMA. Asphalt industry professionals trust Evotherm warm mix asphalt for three simple reasons: it is easy to use, it requires no equipment changes at the plant or job site and it is metered into existing materials and drops into existing HMA job mix formulas. The solution provides the lowest temperatures. This reduction in temperature expands the area a plant can service broadening markets without compromising quality. At the plant, Evotherm lessens the wear and tear on hot-mix equipment due to its lower processing temperatures. On the job site, traffic is returned immediately after compaction. Evotherm delivers proven performance. Workability and compaction at reduced temperatures are easier than HMA, especially for coarse mixes and polymer modified asphalts. –

INTEGRATED TRAFFIC CONTROL
30 www.abcmagazine.eu
On of the high-tech “star” at the last ITS World Congress in Wien, Austria, was Swarco Omnia, a sophisticated software solution and a high level software environment, that provides a homogeneous and user-friendly user interface for different traffic control and traffic management systems, making the operation of a traffic management system of any city or region much more convenient. Omnia is a open platform conceived by the Italian Swarco Mizar, to provide a uniform interface for any number of traffic control and transport management systems which are plugged-in autonomously or integrated within a common architecture. Omnia offers a user-friendly access and a homogeneous “look and feel” to all the functionalities and objects supported by the systems connected. The state-of-the-art response to the ever-increasing traffic volumes and daily congestion on today’s roads is an integrated architecture - IRTE, in which ITS applications for Traffic Control, Transport Management, Environment Monitoring and Multimedia Mobility Information can cooperate fully to implement traffic management strategies. But in multi-application environments it is essential to have a shared interface to the different systems. The Omnia concept exploits Swarco Mizar’s three decades of experience gained in the fields of traffic control, transport management, mobility information service and integrated ITS architectures. All of the ITS applications offered by Swarco Mizar have inherent features making them ideal for integration in the Omnia platform.

COLD ASPHALT Among the many innovative products presented at Asphaltica 2012 by Arezzo Bitumi, a Company of Gellini Group, we can mention the new product Pro Sealing (we will inform about that in one of the next edictions) and the more and more appreciated solution Modipatch, created with the intent of combining in a single product the performance of a hot mix and the ease of use of a cold mix. Modipatch, different in consituent materials, is the first cold mix made with plastomers and elastomers modified bitumen and synthetic structural fibers mixed with basaltic aggregates (size 0/8 mm) during a peculiar production process; the long preparation, in a delicate process that for its nature cannot be automated, gives to Modipatch excellent features of a hand-made and unique product. All these features give an unusual but want-
ed opacity to our cold mix. This opacity gives to Modipatch higher performances: first of all, when roads are re-opened to traffic Modipatch doesn’t stick to tires avoiding that usual but unwelcome result of aggregates crumbling and scattering on the surface; at the same time it can be said that this is the feature that allows the mix particles to strongly link together. Modipatch can be used without all the usual preventive actions such as cleaning the pothole and removing water from it; moreover the product doesn’t need bituminous primer or a final mechanical consolidation. Modipatch by Gellini is also very easy to use: thanks to its opacity, doesn’t stick to truck-beds as well as to shovels or other instruments used for spreading.

ADVANCED TRAFFIC CAMERA Traficon announced EYE-D, a powerful Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera that automatically recognizes license plates from all over the world with the highest accuracy. “At the 2012 edition of the Intertraffic exhibition in Amsterdam, Traficon already announced the acquisition of SUMIT srl Ltd, a UK-based provider of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology”, commented Dieter Cosaert, Traficon Product Manager. “Now Traficon will take the opportunity of the ITS World Congress in Vienna to announce its first integrated ANPR camera to the public”. EYE-D addresses a wide range of applications, including red light enforcement, automatic tolling, urban congestion charging, black/white list applications and average journey time monitoring. Traficon’s EYE-D camera is equipped with a powerful infrared illumination, which enables it to monitor two lanes simultaneously up to a range of 60 meters during day and night time. The EYE-D has a very powerful Optical Character Recognition (OCR) engine, and a vast library of worldwide license plates and alphabet types. Many ANPR cameras fail to detect correctly when a license plate has been captured under a certain angle. In contrast, Traficon’s EYE-D makes use of very efficient de-skewing and derotation algorithms, which will auto-correct the detected number plate and align it so an accurate OCR is possible. This gives customers and installers more freedom of camera positioning in the real world. –

ANTIPUMPING MEMBRANE Among the more interesting recent innovations in the road sector we can mention an antipumping elastomeric polymer bitumen self-heat-adhesive membrane - developed by Index - with composite reinforcement made up of a high resistance glass fabric and non-woven polyester fabric for the strengthening and waterproofing of asphalt concrete for roads, to be laid hot. To extend the effective lifetime of the road paving it is necessary to reinforce the bound layers in order to increase the load-bearing capacity and, at the same time, insert a waterproof and watertight layer which prevents water passing through, stopping the consequent pumping phenomenon. Autotene Asfaltico Antipumping HE/TP extends the useful lifetime of the road paving because: it stops the transmission of cracks; it increases the fatigue resistance; it reduces deformation of the asphalt; it cancels out the “pumping” phenomenon. Established in 1978, Index soon became one of the most important Companies in the world for the production of technologically advanced waterproofing materials destined for the protection of residential, commercial, industrial buildings, major works and civil engineering. Index is present throughout all the Italian regions and abroad with branches in UK and France and over 100 distributors in the main countries of the five continents. –

NATURAL ASPHALTITE
34 www.abcmagazine.eu
Since 2001, Selenice Bitumi Sha extracts, treats, manufactures and distributes a natural asphaltite. Selenizza SLN is an additive used among others, for manufacturing high performance bituminous materials. This natural additive is only subject to hot purification process aimed to reduce its sterile rate. Selenice Bitumi product is compatible with all bitumen and its asphaltene content, which is superior to 50%, confers to the asphalt mixes exceptional rheological and mechanical properties. It may be blended directly whith the hot bitumen in tanks, but usually, it is added during the asphalt mixing process (in the mixer for the discontinuous asphalt plants, or in the recycling ring for the continuous plants). The addition of Selenizza SLN deeply modifies the rheology of the original binder. Depending on the added quantity of Selenizza, and on the base bitumen as well, it is possible to obtain precise penetration and/or R&B softening point values of the resulting binder.
Siemens and Streetline have launched the first of its kind smart parking project in the city of Braunschweig, Germany to provide parking relief to residents and local businesses. The project is locally-led by Bellis, a public-private partnership from Siemens and the Braunschweiger Versorgungs AG & Co. KG (BS | Energy). “BAIRES” UNDERGROUND PROJECT A few years ago, the Buenos Aires City Government commissioned an important hydraulic project to drastically reduce the flooding which periodically hits the city of Buenos Aires. It is called the Arroyo Maldonado project, and includes two tunnels with a diameter of approximately 6.50 metres, running from the south-west to the north-east of the City, to capture rainwater and channel it towards the Rio de la Plata River. Starting in September 2009, the shorter of the two tunnels was completed in around 350 working days, while the longer one was completed by the end of 2011. Mapei UTT was constantly present on site, ensuring high-level technical support, especially for the ground conditioning, the back-fill grout injection behind the rings and the use of tail seal grease in the TBM. The ground excavated by the TBM must be conditioned using special foaming agents, injected at the front of the TBM, that gives the ground a plastic and low permeability consistency. By choosing the most appropriate product (Poyfoamer FP), the boring machine progressed quickly. Mapequick CBS System 1 and 2 liquid admixtures for the two-component mix injected to fill the empty space behind the shield. Mapeblox T grease was used to seal the tail shield brushes of the TBM and to prevent the unwanted ingress of water, ground, grout, etc. into the working environment. –

On November 14th Mr. Pietro Ciucci, CEO of the Italian road national Company Anas SpA made a speech at European Parliament focused on the development of the “New A3 Motorway Project”. Anas is currently engaged in the construction of the most modern European motorway: the new A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria. Anas - Ciucci said - is building a completely new and safer motorway, with higher road curvatures and 3,75 meters traffic lanes as well as 3 meters emergency lanes. It features a 4 meter wide neutral ground along 443 kilometers. Therefore, the project is not simply an update and enlargement of the motorway but it represents the construction of a completely new infrastructure that replaces the existing one with minimal disruption of traffic, especially during the peak holiday season. Today, 272 kilometers have been completed, 93 kilometers are being built
and tenders have been published for other 20 kilometers for a total of 385 kilometers or 87% of the entire route. The original 443 kilometers at the end of the construction will be reduced to 433. There are 124 km without construction sites between Salerno and Lagonegro and 148 construction-free kilometers on the rest of the motorway to make up for the 272 kilometers of new road. Anas ambitious goal - the CEO concluded - is to complete all funded and initiated construction before the end of 2013. The current trend of construction allows to confirm such challenging goal both from an engineering and a financial standpoint. EC 540

TRADITION AND TECHNOLOGY
CHEMICAL INDUSTRY
A historical Company on the stage at Asphaltica. Menestrina, established in Trento in 1895, at the beginning of the XX Century started developing technology and machinery for asphalt processing, such as storage tank farms, equipment for bitumen emulsions, then later on production machinery for roofing felts, and so on. The Company’s plant was totally destroyed during the second world war. At the beginning of the fifties, Menestrina developed the first hot oil heater in ltaly. Nowadays, the hot oil heaters series Olitherm find their typical application in the most severe industrial heating processes, as for example the cement factories' rotary kilns, for which the Company also provides heating and booster units for fuel oil, and waste-heat recovery systems. Concerning the machinery and equipment for asphalt processing, Menestrina’s experience is virtually unrivalled. As a logical step of development, the manufacturer also achieved the important target of being certified as an ISO-9001 Total Quality System Company by one of the eldest and most reputed Inspection Agencies in Europe. “The Company - Menestrina finally says - counts on much more than one Century of age, still it has the enthusiasm and a force of a young, brand new enterprise”. –

Polimeri Europa is entering a historic period of change, a transition that will see the largest petrochemical producer in Italy - and one of Europe’s biggest players - strengthen itself for the future. With a new name, new identity and new focus, the Company is repositioning itself as a more international, efficient and sustainable producer in a global, greener chemical sector. CEO Daniele Ferrari says its identity no longer reflected the vision of the future. The Company was originally named Polimeri Europa in 1995, arising from joint venture between Enichem and Unin Carbide. From March 2012 it has been rebranded as versalis (eni) to signal the change. “Europa is no longer our only focus - says Ferrari -. The new name will account for a tangible need for change innovation: it reflects our new direction”.
