Shabbat 101

The Sabbath (in Hebrew, Shabbat, pronounced shahBAHT–or in some communities, Shabbos, “SHAH-bis”) may be Judaism’s most distinctive and characteristic practice, as well as one of its most pervasive and longlasting gifts to Western civilization.

Good office & floor etiquette help build the foundation for a healthy work environment. Here are some tips to make the most of your interactions with your colleagues. • Treat others how you would like to be treated. • Being well-mannered and respectful can leave a positive impression on just about everyone. • If you finish your work ahead of schedule, offer to assist others in completing their duties. • Don’t backstab or find fault with your peers. Instead focus on the positive and offer praise when warranted. • If working short-staffed, it may be a good idea to “buddy up” with a partner. When we are stressed it is easier to do things together. • Always let your partner and supervisor on duty know where you are, even if you are only going to the rest room. This is also true when you are helping a resident with personal care; if you know you will be with a resident for an extended period of time, let your peers know. • Be considerate of your peers: Be prompt and on time. Don’t abuse your break times or meal breaks. • Inform your family & friends that, except in an emergency, they should not to call you at work.

A weekly 25-hour observance, from just before sundown each Friday through the completion of nightfall on Saturday, Shabbat is more than just a day off from labor. It is a day of physical and spiritual delights that is meant to illuminate certain key concepts in the traditional Jewish perception of the world. One constant theme in Shabbat observance across time and territory is the centrality of home life with family members and guests. Its arrival is marked by the spiritual illumination of a candle-lighting ceremony. Rabbinic tradition mandates three Shabbat meals, two begun with a special kiddush (“sanctification”) recited over wine. Family meals are occasions for singing, studying, and celebrating together, as well as for consuming distinctive Shabbat foods. Shabbat observance in the public sphere is focused on the synagogue, from the lively welcoming service, Kabbalat Shabbat, to the pensive farewell ceremony, Havdalah. The daily round of prayer services is augmented and endowed with a unique atmosphere. Special melodies and liturgy are used, and the familiar prayers are supplemented with passages in prose and poetry extolling G-d for the divine gift of the Shabbat and its delights. At the major worship service on Saturday morning, a portion of the Torah is read aloud as part of a yearlong cycle, supplemented by a passage from one of the prophetic books (called a haftarah). http://www.myjewishlearning.org

Get The Picture?

Greetings from Nepal

t

Elana Draper, daughter of Volunteer Coordinator Beth Draper, arrived in Nepal on May 16 as a team member of the International Medical Corps in the aftermath of the April 25 earthquake. Up until Elana Draper with her feline the last week of June, Nepal friend was still getting aftershocks of 4.0 or higher almost daily. Although the aftershocks have diminished considerably, there is much work to do there. Elana is orienting the teams of health workers, contractors, and others who are still funneling into Nepal to help rebuild, improve the sanitation conditions, and educate the native population about standard precautions. With the coming of the monsoon season and the prevalence of poor sanitary conditions, there is a concern that cholera could break out and spread rapidly. Elana is working long hard hours but loving her time there. She will be returning to the USA at the end of August.

Got Crane? One of the perks of living on (or visiting) 19 acres of meadow is occasional visits from feathered folks like these sandhill cranes.

Lemonade for ADC & Chai Point Shoshi and Alex, children of Dana Rubin-Winkelman, social worker at Chai Point, set up a lemonade stand. Alex wore a sign on his back, riding up the street on his bike to “market” the Alex and Shoshi Winkelman at their lemonade stand lemonade stand. The monies raised will be donated to the Adult Day Center and Chai Point! Dana said, “This warmed my heart!”

Be Prepared

Check out our social media pages!

Taking preparedness actions helps people deal with disasters of all sorts much more effectively when they do occur. If disaster strikes your community, you might not have access to food, water, or electricity for some time. By taking time now to prepare emergency water supplies, food supplies and a disaster supplies kit, you can provide for your entire family. And don’t forget to take your pets and service animals into account!

Facebook JHCC: http://www.facebook.com/JewishHomeAndCareCenter Chai Point: http://www.facebook.com/ChaiPointSeniorLiving SCC: http://www.facebook.com/Sarah-Chudnow-Community JHCC Foundation: http://www.facebook.com/jhccfoundation Twitter ReCharge!: http://twitter.com/JSL_ReCharge JHCC Foundation: http://twitter.com/JSLiving YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/JHCCFoundation

Take a few minutes to answer these questions: • Do you have an emergency supply kit that includes water, food, medicines, and first aid items for all members of your family, including pets? • Do you have an emergency plan, and do you practice it with your family regularly? • Do you know what to expect in an emergency regarding physical damage, coping, and next steps?
