The Jewish Home and Care Center (JHCC) Foundation financially supports the operations of the Jewish Home and Care Center, Chai Point and the Sarah Chudnow Community. The JHCC Foundation has several committees that advise Michael Sattell, CEO and President of the JHCC Foundation and its Board of Directors in matters involving our mission; to provide our Jewish Community with those services that enable our seniors or infirm to be part of a quality Jewish environment with comfort, meaning, independence and dignity. Research Committee Recently a new committee, the Research Committee, was formed to help guide our Research Program and its director, Dr. Christine Kovach. The JHCC Foundation is committed to advancing knowledge regarding best practices in long-term care and aging well. To this end, the JHCC maintains a research office that coordinates research activities at the Jewish Home and Care Center. The purpose of the Research Committee is to foster the development of research
projects at the JHCC that advance knowledge regarding best practices in long-term care and aging well. The Research Committee identifies gaps in scientific knowledge regarding long-term care or older adults’ health and well-being and determines the feasibility and priority for such projects at JHCC. The committee will also review requests for research and compliance of projects with federal requirements. The committee meets four times a year and reports directly to chairperson of the Foundation. The committee makes recommendations to the chairperson of the Foundation for review and approval. The chairperson presents the recommendations for final approval by the Foundation board of directors. continued on page 2

Grant Committee The JHCC Grant Committee plays an integral part in our mission to improve the daily lives of our residents. The Grant Committee was formed in 2015 in an effort to make the Foundation granting process transparent and meets four times per year. The Committee members have the express authority to do the following, to the extent permitted by applicable law and our articles of incorporation and bylaws: • Review grant proposals as submitted. • Make recommendation for Foundation fund selection • Make recommendations for funding to the Foundation board of directors. • Post-review of program evaluation reports • Annually review, through self-evaluation, the committee’s performance in fulfilling these responsibilities and goals. The Grant Committee, in evaluating a grant request, determines that primary consideration should be given to grant requests for innovative projects and
programs that meet some or all of the following criteria: • Has a positive impact on the delivery of care at our facilities; • Has potential for long-term sustainability beyond the grant period; • With Foundation funding, would help position us for additional funding from individuals, corporations, foundations and other external sources; • ls consistent with our mission, and strategic and operational priorities. In January, the committee met to review grants for fiscal year 2016-2017. At the meeting after review and discussion of each grant proposal, the committee granted 21 grants for a total of $65,100. The grants were for various activities and programming, dietary, nursing, social services, religious and pastoral care needs; all that have a direct impact on the quality of life for residents and helps to fulfill our mission.

Jewish Minor Fasts 101 In addition to the major public fast days of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) and Tisha B’Av (the Ninth of the month of Av, which commemorates the destruction of the Temples), there are four minor public fast days in the Jewish calendar. The minor fasts last only from dawn until sundown, in distinction to Yom Kippur and Tisha B’Av, which last 25 hours, from sundown until three stars can be seen in the sky the following night. The minor fast days also are not as restrictive in practice as the major fasts. Ideas and Beliefs Most of the minor fasts are connected with the destruction of the Temple. The Seventeenth of Tammuz (Shiva Asar be-Tammuz) commemorates the day on which the Romans breached the walls of Jerusalem in 70 C.E. It marks the beginning of the three weeks of mourning leading up to Tisha B’Av. The Fast of Gedaliah (Tsom Gedaliah) is in memory of the Babylonian appointed governor of Judah, who was assassinated by a fellow Judean following the destruction of the First Temple. It takes place on the day following Rosh Hashanah.
The Tenth of Tevet (Asarah be-Tevet) marks the beginning of the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E. The Fast of Esther (Ta’anit Esther) is observed on the day before the joyous holiday of Purim, unless that day is a Sabbath. In fasting on this day, one is emulating the fast of Queen Esther and her fellow Jews before she went to the king to plead on their behalf. Practices With the exception of Yom Kippur, none of the other communal fast days in the Jewish calendar may fall on the Sabbath. Hence, the Jewish calendar must sometimes be adjusted in order to ensure that these fasts are observed on other days of the week. On the minor fasts, only eating and drinking are restricted, not other signs of mourning, such as wearing leather, that are prohibited on major fast days. In addition, the laws concerning who may break his or her fast–or skip the fast altogether–are more lenient for minor fasts. Resources: http://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/jewish-minor-fasts-101/

Meet Our New Administrator-in-Training Hello! My name is Briana Weyker, but I prefer to be called Bri, like the cheese. Blood Drive: Do It For Dave Most everyone knows Volunteer Coordinator Beth Draper. Many of us also know her husband Dave, who has been an active volunteer with our organization for several years. Right now Dave is battling stage 4 cancer. Among the things Dave has had to give up are his regular visits to the Blood Center; he has been a committed donor for years, saving countless lives with his consistent donations. Bri Weyker, our new AIT, is coordinating a blood drive in September. Please register with her and give a pint in Dave’s honor! Dave is the kind of person who never says no when he is asked to help… let’s help out now when he can’t. Summer is a really difficult time for blood donations, and every pint is needed. If you’re not sure if you are eligible to give blood, sign up and let the Blood Center’s staff help you figure it out. Remember, one pint of blood can save three lives!
The Grapevine FUTURE WORLD CHAMPION? Leilani Feliciano, daughter of HR assistant Anna Feliciano, competed in American Taeknowdo Association (ATA) Worlds in Little Rock, Arkansas, on July 2, 2016. Out of three categories, Leilani placed 1st in forms and sparring, which is a huge accomplishment. She is working on getting her black belt in order to compete for a world title.
Leilani, daughter of Ana Feliciano
In order to receive this title, one needs to be a black belt and place in the top ten in the state to compete. All colored belts compete at Worlds for an experience leading to a black belt and earning points to be top ten in the state, thus being able to compete for state champion and district champion. BIRTHDAY BUDDIES Happy birthday to Peyton (August 4) and Zac (August 2), children of Jim Hahn, manager of plant operations.
