New Beginnings We are very pleased to announce that the local marketing firm of Boelter + Lincoln has been selected to help us develop a fresh brand identity. The board Marketing Committee and various members of our staff worked together to make the final selection, which included in-depth interviews with several leading firms known for their marketing excellence. During the coming months, through a collaborative effort involving residents, families, staff members, board members, volunteers and others, we will work closely with Boelter + Lincoln to craft a clear identity that will truly represent who we are as a united organization. While preserving the uniqueness of each of our communities, our new brand will convey the reality that we are a single family made up of a broad range of senior living services. Once we have our new brand message, we know we can count on all of you to be our brand ambassadors in the community. We’ll all join together to tell our special story in a new and exciting way! Sincerely, Michelle Putz, COO Randy Crosby, CAO Marlene Heller, Director of Marketing & Communications

Clip ’n Save: What Sets the JHCC SNF Apart From the Others? (Part 2) Often, our employees are our best ambassadors. But we sometimes take for granted how unique our services and specialties are; we may not realize that we are so far ahead of the curve when it comes to the expertise of our staff and the level of care we offer. Here, then, are a few more reminders and talking points to use when speaking about our Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs). • Dedicated rehab floor: We have an entire floor dedicated to rehab, with all private rooms. Included with each rehab stay: • Services provided by our dedicated expert concierge • Hotel-style rooms with flat screen TV, microwave, refrigerator • High nurse-to-patient ratio • RNs have hospital-based training (not new grads or clinic nurses) • Advanced technology patient care equipment (Vibe Tech and ACP) • Rehab therapy is only RNs for higher level of critical thinking • DON has developed critical care pathways to decrease length of stay
• Indoor pool for aquatic therapy with our full-time wellness coordinator • Transitions of Care: we continue to manage your care when you go home; reduces readmits to hospital • Respite Stay: Availability for respite stay in all areas of JHCC • Fewer comorbidities: Minimizing and decreasing rates of infection with the use of germ-zapping technology (Xenex). (Means for consumer: zero rates of c.diff, staph infection, etc.) • High level of staff expertise: • Experienced RNs with L-Tech training • Complex surgical • Cardiac • Medical/Surgical • Post-op experts • DON has CHS, COPD expertise • Pulmonary/respiratory therapy • Ortho: staples-site incision • Infectious disease experts • Myocardial infarction experts • Ability to handle multiple layers of complexities, due to experienced RNs with decades of experience.

Eco-Judaism & Tu B’Shvat Commentary Tu B’Shvat is the New Year of the trees. This Jewish nature holiday occurs on the fifteenth day, the full moon, of the Hebrew month of Shevat, in late January or early February. At this time, in Israel, the almond tree is the first to begin to flower and the sap begins to rise within the trees.
When God created the first man, he took him around to all the trees in the Garden of Eden and said to him, “See my handiwork, how beautiful and choice they are... Be careful not to ruin and destroy my world, for if you do ruin it, there is no one to repair it after you.” (from Midrash Rabbah on Ecclesiastes 7:13 which states “Consider the work of God; for who can make that straight, which He hath made crooked?”) Trees are so revered that we are taught that during a battle, one must not destroy fruit bearing trees. After the fighting is over, people have to live and will need food. This reverence is prevalent in the following tale: Honi and the Carob Tree A Talmud Tale as told by Peninnah Schram Honi the Wise One was also known as Honi the Circle Maker. By drawing a circle and stepping inside of it, he would recite special prayers for rain, sometimes even argue with God during a drought, and the rains would come. He was, indeed, a miracle maker. As wise as he was, Honi sometimes saw something that puzzled him. Then he would ask questions so he could unravel the mystery. One day, Honi the Circle Maker was walking on the road and saw a man planting a carob tree. Honi asked the man, “How long will it take for this tree to bear fruit?” The man replied, “Seventy years.” Honi then asked the man, “And do you think you will live another seventy years and eat the fruit of this tree?” The man answered, “Perhaps not. However, when I was born into this world, I found many carob trees planted by my father and grandfather. Just as they planted trees for me, I am planting trees for my children and grandchildren so they will be able to eat the fruit of these trees.”
While the counting of the age of trees was important in ancient times for taxation purposes, in modern Israel, this agricultural holiday has become similar to Arbor Day. Trees are planted in Israel on Tu B’Shvat or else money is sent to the Jewish National Fund to plant trees for us. On Tu B’Shvat, it is also customary to eat fifteen different fruits, especially fruits and nuts grown in Israel, for example, pomegranates, grapes, figs, dates, almonds and carob. In Judaism, trees are regarded as extremely precious and important. There are blessings over the first buds of spring and also when we eat the fruits for the first time in that season. There is a saying that if the Messiah is coming while you are planting a tree, finish planting it first and then go and greet the Messiah. Honi and the Carob Tree is one of the classic tales from the Talmund (Ta’anit 23a). I heard it from my mother who often reminded me that her father had repeated this story to her many times. It focuses on the importance of taking care of the world for the next generation. Tu B’Shvat falls on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. The Grapevine Explained Across our communities, 2015 was the year of the baby. You may wonder why not all of them made it into Personnelly Speaking. The rule is: photos and information must be sent directly from the family to the editors in order to preserve privacy. Not all employees want their photos or personal information published in the newsletter.
If you and your family do have exciting news (i.e. newly married, becoming a proud parent or grandparent), submit your information to Grapevine by emailing Becca Loss, Communications Specialist, at rloss@jewishseniorliving.org. We look forward to sharing your good news in 2016! PERSONNELLY SPEAKING | January 2016 | 4

Make healthy food choices. Grab a healthy snack on the go. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Be active. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park farther away and walk. Protect yourself from injury and disease. Put on a helmet, sunscreen, insect repellent. Wash your hands for 20 seconds. Manage stress. Don’t overschedule or overcommit. Take short breaks throughout the day. Make an appointment for a check-up, vaccination, or screening.

But remember…please do not access social media during working hours! Social Media Fun Fact:
The creators of Instagram got the name from a combination of the fact that old Polaroid cameras marketed themselves as “instant” and the fact that they felt snapshots were like telegrams that got sent over the wire to others.
