An Introduction from Michelle Putz, Our New COO (Chief Operations Officer) Warm greetings to all, I am very excited about embarking on this exciting journey as the Chief Operating Officer of the Jewish Home and Care Center, Chai Point and Sarah Chudnow Community. I have been involved with Senior Living communities for my entire 25-year career including skilled nursing facilities, assisted livings, independent apartments and community services. I feel very passionate and committed about the work that we do each day for our residents, families, staff and the greater Jewish community as a whole. As the Chief Operating Officer, I look forward to becoming part of an extraordinary team that will lead our organization into the future. The health care spectrum is rapidly changing—and we must change with it to thrive and grow. I plan on meeting either individually or in groups with team members so that I can better understand the heritage and culture of our organization.

I am charged with having the strategic and operational responsibility for the Jewish Home, Chai Point and Sarah Chudnow communities. I plan on working closely with Mike Sattell, the Boards of Directors and the Management team in the development, design, operation, and improvement of the systems that we use each day. I have long admired this tremendous organization and I am thrilled and humble to have the opportunity to become part of this award-winning team. Please introduce yourself and say Hello to me if you see me in the hallway. I look forward to our future together.

Best regards, Michelle Putz

Clip ‘n Save: Code Grey/Dr. Grey Severe Weather & Tornado Alerts Spring is in the air, and with that comes the potential for severe weather. Please follow this protocol when there is threatening weather, and a tornado watch or warning has been issued. • Be alert to changing weather conditions and watch for approaching storms. Tornado season in Wisconsin is from May to August; however, tornadoes can occur any time of year. • Be aware of the following signs of an impending tornado, and be prepared to take preventative measures immediately: • Dark, often greenish skies • Large hail • A large, dark, low-lying cloud - especially if it appears to be rotating • A loud roar, similar to a freight train or a jet engine Meteorologists and tornado forecasters are not able to provide the same kind of warning as hurricane watchers can, but they can provide enough warning to save lives. Today, the average time for a tornado alert is 13 minutes. The Front Desk at each community is charged with responsibility of monitoring the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather radio, especially when there is the threat of severe weather. When you hear the “Code Grey” or “Dr. Grey” alert, it is important that you know what to do and that you respond immediately. Each community has its own safety procedures and designated “safe zones” in place. It is your responsibility to know where these safe zones are, and how best to get residents in your care to these locations. Be confident and secure in the knowledge that you know what to do when you hear the “Code Grey” or “Dr. Grey” alert. Talk with your supervisor, hold mock tornado drills, have a discussion with your residents. Together we can ensure everyone’s safety during the threat of severe weather.

Shavout 101

Shavuot, the “Feast of Weeks,” is celebrated seven weeks after Pesach (Passover). Since the counting of this period (sefirat ha-omer) begins on the second evening of Pesach, Shavuot takes place exactly 50 days after the (first) seder. Hence, following the Greek word for “fifty.” Shavuot combines two major religious observances. First is the grain harvest of the early summer. Second is the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai seven weeks after the exodus from Egypt. The first determines the ritual for the holiday, which was one of the three pilgrimage festivals of ancient Israel, when Israelite males were commanded to appear before G-d in Jerusalem, bringing offerings of the first fruits of their harvest. The second determines the significance of the holiday for Judaism, tying it in with the seminal event of Jewish religious memory, namely the entering into a covenant between G-d and Israel. By associating an ancient holiday of the grain harvest with the exodus from Egypt, Jewish tradition has imbued Shavuot with religious significance derived from the foundational event in Jewish historical consciousness. In the specific case of Shavuot, this takes the form of the entering into a covenant or formal agreement between G-d and Israel at Mount Sinai. This is a joyous time, since it is the moment at which G-d and Israel entered into a figurative marriage with each other, the hopeful springtime of their relationship. http://www.myjewishlearning.org

Take a Break

Check out our social media pages!

Taking five-minute breaks --whether you sit at a desk, do heavy construction work, or anything in between-can have several benefits. Below are examples of some activities you can do in five minutes or less for rest breaks. • Take several short breaks throughout the day (about every hour). Make sure they include some movement. • Take a short walk away from your workstation. • Stand up and stretch or walk in place at your desk without looking at your computer monitor. • Get out of your chair whenever you take phone calls at your desk. • Change positions at your workstation. • Have a drink of water or a light snack.
