Welcome to the July Chamber Voice! We’ve put together another really good issue of the Chamber Voice of Business Magazine this month. Here’s a quick preview of my favorite stories.

One big thing: In my role at the Chamber, I work hard every day to accomplish RLC’s strategic goals for Downtown Rogers. Take a glance at what we’re doing to develop downtown’s vibrancy:

helping us accomplish our goals and their outcomes above is the Art on the Bricks Art Walk. It promotes Downtown Rogers as a destination for arts, music, dance, and other interactive Third Space experiences. Read the article to learn more about what’s happening. Here’s a preview:

• The theme of the July 13 event is Digitally Yours, A Celebration of Art Made of Bits and Bytes, inspired the annual celebration of Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day.

• We’re showcasing the talent of these less traditional artists on July 13 in Downtown Rogers, specifically those who work in the digital realm: Animators, illustrators, photographers, plasma cutter operators, and techies dabbling in AI art generators, and other creators of digital art.

The new Downtown Merchants Meet-Up: We’re also convening business owners, managers, and staff together every month to connect and collaborate. We believe that we are all better when we work together!

Destination Rogers Convenes Hotelier Community

Destination Rogers hosted the June 22 Hotel Forecast meeting at Hyatt Place Rogers with 20 attendees. This quarterly get together gathers the Rogers hotelier community to:

• Discuss what’s happening in the community and at Destination Rogers

• Review trends and the latest hotel market performance data

• Share thoughts on past/future market performance and trends

A look ahead: Hoteliers look forward to networking time with each other at these meetings. As lodging professionals, they share best practices and look together at what’s ahead for their community.

By the numbers: Here are some highlights discussed at the meeting:

• Hot 2023 —YTD through March, total Rogers hotel revenue has soared 27.2% ahead of same period in 2022, blowing by pre-covid increases of 3-5%

• End of year outlook: Collective wisdom amongst hoteliers projects an 8% revenue increase for 2023 when comparing to 2022

• Hoteliers planning for BBB: Survey of Rogers hoteliers said they expect to fill nearly 50% of their inventory during the Rogers Bikes Blues and BBQ motorcycle rally.

Our mission at work: As a division of the Rogers Lowell Chamber, Destination Rogers creates economic opportunities for our community by attracting meetings, conventions, tournaments, events, and leisure visitors to the city of Rogers and Northwest Arkansas region.

Chamber’s Mission-Work

Activating Leaders through High School L.E.A.D. Program

It’s our mission-work: L.E.A.D. Rogers, a Community Development program of the Rogers Lowell Chamber, is a transformative leadership development initiative providing strategic support to underserved students in the Rogers Public High Schools. Program applications are open to the whole student body.

• L.E.A.D.: Leadership, Education, Advancement & Development

What happened: Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, the program offered students diverse opportunities to build a strong foundation of skills to help them achieve their life goals.

• Supported by local businesses and leaders, the Chamber provided guidance on various topics, while partnerships with higher educational institutions addressed specific concerns.

• Experiential learning entities helped students develop leadership skills, boosting their self-confidence and sense of worth.

Why it’s important: During the school year, monthly sessions cover topics such as leadership development, emotional intelligence, community service, financial literacy, civic engagement, and entrepreneurship.

• Bottom line: Students learn valuable insights and life skills that extended beyond the classroom.

How it works: Collaboration with the Student Success Coordinators ensures effective communication with schools and students, creating a seamless flow of information and resources. The program welcomes applications from the entire student body, ensuring inclusivity and equal opportunity for all.

And there’s more: The program is enriched to provide experiences that broaden students’ horizons and equip them with practical knowledge for personal and professional growth. For example:

• Events and resources, such as guest speakers from diverse backgrounds (who had attended all three high schools).

• The Arvest Bank financial literacy workshop.

• The Leadership Retreat hosted by the Rogers Lowell Chamber, with the support of the Rogers Activity Center and Milestone Leadership.

Final assessment: L.E.A.D. Rogers served as a crucial steppingstone for underserved students, fostering leadership skills and providing essential support.

• Why it matters: By shaping the next generation of leaders, the program empowered students to succeed academically and thrive in their future endeavors and provided four scholarships to students actively participating in the program to pursue post-secondary education.

Networking with a Purpose

Business After Hours is one of RLC’s biggest and most popular networking events, and this one has a special twist.

Networking with a Purpose brought together Chamber members and community leaders for an opportunity to network with local Nonprofit Organizations (NPOs) in a relaxed, informal atmosphere on June 15.

• By the numbers: A total of 150 people attended. There were nearly 30 exhibitors!

Why it’s important: NPOs set up booths and shared essential information about who they are and what they do.

• Serving business & community together: Organizations had the opportunity to showcase their mission, recruit volunteers, and offer chances for participants to give back to the community.

Downtown Rogers Merchant Meet-Up Explores New Workforce Development Tool

Carte is an application coming soon to revolutionize hourly hiring.

Why it matters: The Meet-Up brings Downtown Rogers (DTR) business owners, managers, and staff together every month to connect, converse, and collaborate. All local businesses, not just downtown, are welcome to attend and participate.

One fun thing: KNWA photographer, Jacob Cotner, popped into the last event and created a news story about DTR businesses convening to make connections. Word is getting out about our Meet-Up!

What’s next: Join us Thursday, July 20 from 8:45 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. at Rogers Historical Museum’s Key Wing. We have a special program presented by Andrea Roten with Carte.

• Carte is an application coming soon to revolutionize hourly hiring by matching employers and job seekers with a simple swipe.

• The app will help businesses fill hourly jobs across industries including hospitality (food & beverage, hotels), retail, healthcare, construction, and more.

• Founder, Andrea Roten, is launching Carte right here in Northwest Arkansas before going nationwide.

Central Referral Connection to Celebrate its 7th Anniversary!

What’s happening: We’re celebrating the 7-year anniversary of Central Referral Connection (CRC) in Rogers, a popular networking program of the Rogers Lowell Chamber, on July 14!

Why it matters: CRC is a free business-to-business (B2B) networking and referral event for all Northwest Arkansas businesses. It helps our small business community make connections and generate leads.

• We meet at Golden Corral Buffet & Grill in Rogers each Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. and the Golden Corral Buffet & Grill in Fayetteville each Friday at 9:00 a.m.

• Chamber staff member Susana Silva leads the group, which is open to both Chamber members and nonmembers.

Arvest Million Meals Campaign Raises $101,791 for Local NWA Food Partners

Giving back to NWA: Arvest bank conducted their 13th annual Million Meals campaign which is dedicated to raising money through special events and donation. This eight-week fundraiser collects donations from Arvest’s four-state banks with the goal of feeding those in need.

Million Meals: The campaign runs on the principle that $1 can provide up to five meals through the local food organizations across Arkansas, Southwest Missouri, and easter Oklahoma.

• By the numbers: This year’s donations totaled nearly half a million dollars representing 2,298,291 meals.

What they’re saying:

Craig Shy, President of Arvest Fayetteville Region: “We continue to be amazed by the outpouring of support from customers, community members and associates. Through their help, we are now seeing contribution levels not seen since before the COVID-19 pandemic. We are grateful for their role in fighting hunger throughout our communities and for helping us once again exceed our ‘million meals’ goal.”

Why

it matters:

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Arkansas and Oklahoma are ranked among the top five states for the most food-insecure in the nation. There is a need to help feed our communities and end food insecurity.

• This initiative has raised 4.1 million in funds since 2011 which equals 22.9 million meals.

Children’s Miracle Network Raises More Than $5.9 Million for Arkansas Childrens

Miracle Day was celebrated on May 24 by the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) including Arkansas Children’s here in Arkansas. This day is dedicated to celebrating the children in CMN Hospitals and fundraising money to support:

• critical life-saving treatments and healthcare services

• innovative research

• vital pediatric medical equipment

• child life services and financial assistance for families

Dig deeper: Arkansas Children’s is one of 170 Children’s Miracle Network local hospitals. This healthcare system is the only one in Arkansas that’s dedicated solely to caring for children. Arkansas Children’s Northwest is right here in NWA helping make the region the place where people want to live, work, and play.

The 2023 Rogers Cycling Festival (RCF) is a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery, roads, and trails of Rogers. In partnership with the City of Rogers, the RCF is a family-friendly event coming Saturday, September 9. Cyclists can bike Railyard Loop from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Cycling enthusiasts looking for a more challenging course can participate in the Enduro Race from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Before riding, be sure to check out the many booths set up featuring local businesses and grab complimentary merchandise and accessories.

Why it matters: The Rogers Cycling Festival brings the cycling community together to experience something for everyone. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit cycling nonprofits and causes. A new study has shown that biking events improve the economy of our NWA region. Events like RCF help us give back to the community where people want to live, work, and play. In the past the festival has raised a total of more than $100,000.

Digitally Yours: A Celebration of Art Made of Bits and Bytes

It’s our mission-work: RLC works hard to attract new investment to our historic downtown community while also supporting small business growth with our unique programming.

RLC’s Downtown Rogers Art on the Bricks Art Walk provides a welcoming and diverse ThirdSpace to members of our community. In addition to extended hours in retail shops, art galleries and pop-up art exhibits are scheduled from 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. on the 2nd Thursday of every month.

• Our Art Walk is also promoting Downtown Rogers as a destination location for arts, music, dance, and other interactive experiences.

What’s happening in July: We’re showcasing the talent of less traditional artists on July 13 in Downtown Rogers, specifically those who work in the digital realm:

• Animators, illustrators, photographers, plasma cutter operators, and techies dabbling in AI art generators, and other creators of digital art.

Inspired by AI Appreciation Day: The theme of the July 13 event is Digitally Yours, A Celebration of Art Made of Bits and Bytes, inspired the annual celebration of Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day.

• It’s celebrated (or cursed) each year on July 16. We know that some appreciate the day more than others, but it is an opportunity for everyone to understand it better.

AI Origins: While both promise and peril related to Artificial Intelligence, or AI, are heard daily, one would think it is a new invention. Its origin may surprise you.

• A Google search and quick read of Wikipedia (and what is more AI than Google and Wikipedia?) indicates the science first dates to the invention of a programmable digital computer in the forties followed by the founding of AI research during a workshop on the campus of Dartmouth College in 1956.

Harnessing imagination through digital: Locally, artist and musician, Dave Floyd of Bella Vista, recognized the potential of harnessing his imagination through digital mediums.

• Drawing inspiration from science fiction and fantasy literature, along with his affinity for music and nature, he embarked on a journey to blend these elements into cohesive and captivating imagery.

• Floyd immersed himself in the realm of digital art and is sharing it with other artists and patrons of art and technology.

• Floyd is one of several local artists giving art demonstrations and classes throughout 2023, in conjunction with RLC’s Art on the Bricks Art Walk, with support from a Thirds Space Placemaking Grant from Walmart Foundation.

• He is sharing the opportunity to use artificial intelligence software to introduce others to the exciting realm of AI generated art. For example, “The Coolest Cat in Town,” an AI generative portrait printed on a 24” x 28” canvas, depicts musician Bob Dylan personified as a feline, sold within minutes during the June Art on the Bricks Art Walk.

• His enthusiasm for art will again be readily available as he demonstrates the technology in an interactive display at the Rogers Experimental House, 121 W Walnut Street in Rogers, during upcoming workshops offered by Art on the Bricks Art Walk and Artists of Northwest Arkansas at Rogers Experimental House.

Other featured local artists: These artists enlisted digital technology when creating art and are offering live demonstrations as they sketch on their iPads to create original images or manipulate photographs they have taken with digital cameras.

Another creative individual, Dana Hill: also of Bella Vista, has a unique way to use digital technology and it has enabled the former art teacher to continue to create as she ages. Artists Dana Hill and Beverly McLarty (Beverly Burrows now), collaborate digitally to create art. It was displayed in July at Ozark Beer Company in the 2nd Floor gallery space above the taproom.

• Hill works as a “ghost painter” for Beverly McLarty Burrows, who was well-known in Arkansas as an artist. Burrows, who now lives in Tennessee, is no longer able to create using paint and brushes. Instead, the two artists collaborate via Facebook Messenger – with Burrows doing most of the design and Hill doing the painting. The finished pieces are signed Bevdana.

• The Ozark Beer Company exhibit will include works by Bevdana and Dana Hill throughout the month of July.
