Kia ora Koutou, It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Mrs Chandani Jinadasa. Chandani was a respected member of our teaching staff for 4 years where she taught physics. She was an integral part of our science team and highly valued by her students. The ever smiling face of Chandani will be remembered fondly by all students and staff. Her personal wisdom, teaching expertise and her gentle soul were a huge asset to the school and will be sorely missed for a very long time. We will always remember Chandani and on behalf of our staff and students, our heartfelt condolences and thoughts go out to Chandani’s family at this time. I also wanted to take the time to mention we held a Memorial Assembly for Chandani on Tuesday 8 in the auditorium for all students and staff. Our students were absolutely amazing in their respect for the assembly and in their participation. A selection of staff and students also attended Chandani’s funeral in Hamilton. Again, our students were incredibly dignified and performed a Haka which was extremely passionate and moving. Thank you to our great Senior Leadership Team for organizing everything so well and with great consideration.

We say a fond farewell to our Maths Teacher, Mr Revi Nair who retired this week. Revi will certainly be missed by everyone at Lakes High and we have no doubt he will certainly enjoy spending more time with family and friends. All the very best to you Revi. Last weekend Harry Durbin played in the NZ Maori Rugby League Rangatahi Tournament with his team Kotahitanga. They won the Under 17 division and Harry was named in the U17 tournament team. This team will represent NZ Maori in the Pasifika cup against other South Pacific teams including the likes of Tonga and Fiji. Well done and congratulations to Harry. It’s really great to see all our teams playing so well and putting in the mahi to achieve some really solid scoring and great sportsmanship. Well done! (full details and pics pages 4 - 6). This week it has been a celebration of non-teaching support staff. I want add a huge shout out to all of our nonteaching staff for the fantastic work that they do to keep our school running so smoothly. They form the backbone of our school and ensure that we can continue to do the best for our community. They are often the unrecognized heroes. Thank you.

Ngā mihi

Jon Ward, Principal Tumuaki wardj@rotorualakes.school.nz

STUDENT SUCCESSES ___________________________________________________________________________ HUGE SUCCESS IN NZ MAORI RUGBY LEAGUE Last weekend Harry Durbin played in the NZ Maori Rugby League Rangatahi Tournament with his team Kotahitanga. They won the Under 17 division and Harry was named in the U17 tournament team. This team will represent NZ Maori in the Pasifika cup against other South Pacific teams including the likes of Tonga and Fiji. Harry is the first to acknowledge the help he has received from Jason Sayers, who leads the RLHS Sports Leadership Programme, over the last two years. The photo (left) of the two together is from Harry’s jersey presentation before the tournament.

Congratulations Harry well done😊

Well done boys😊 ___________________________________________________________________________ GIRLS RUGBY On Tuesday our girls travelled to play Whakatane High School Girls U18 Team. Once again, our girls were nervous before kick-off however, once the whistle blew the nerves went out the door once Genesis Smith-Huriwai scored the first try. Next to score was Nevaeh Hira after a nice cut back pass that put her into a gap to score. Whakatane came back with a counter try to which our girls rallied and with good momentum from the forwards Tiraha Karakia scored another try. Lakes had a great defence to hold Whakatane to 21 – 10 by half time. Standout tackling by Maraea Dewes-Green, Dylan Guptill and Tiraha Karakia. In the second half our girls started to tire which wasn’t helped by injuries to 2 players which Whakatane capitalized on and started getting the better of our girls and scoring more trys. Tekuiamoeawa Tamati never gave up and set up Nevaeh Hira for her second try. We managed 3 conversions by Manawa Gates and Dylan Guptill. It is good to remind ourselves that most of our girls are juniors playing in the U18 Girls Grade. Final Score 26-31 to Whakatane. Player of the day Tekuiamoeawa Tamati.

Keep up the fantastic work girls😊 ___________________________________________________________________________ BOYS 2nd HOCKEY The 2nd XI Boys played against top of the table RBHS 2nd XI this week. We started well and showed some real determination on defence to limit RBHS to 1 goal in each of the 1st and 2nd Quarters. As well as defending well, we found some space in behind the RBHS defence but just couldn’t convert. The last two quarters didn’t go our way and our defence slipped away. Player of the Day was Tomas Zuidmeer whose defence and passing in the halves was exceptional. Fantastic play well done😊

___________________________________________________________________________ BOYS 1st HOCKEY Although playing a non competition game last night, the boys took to the turf with one goal in mind - to win! Having played and drawn with WHHS two weeks ago we had a point to make - and make it we did. Periods of strong play, attacks on goal and then hard fought defensive moments saw the play move up and down the turf. It wasn't until the final 5 mins that a beautiful cross in the circle saw Player of the Day Isaac Field smash in the winning goal. Fantastic effort by the whole team!

___________________________________________________________________________ GIRLS FOOTBALL Final Score was 3 to 1 to Tokoroa High School. A very even game till 2nd half. Milla Phipps scored the only goal drop for Lakes in first half by kicking the ball over the heads of a group of about five Tokoroa players and straight into goal. It was a stunning goal to watch. Sasha Temara was Player of the Day for her superb cover.

Great game well done😊
